ClLR SLAMS GOVT AS PUPILS RETURN TO SCHOOL

A Sheffield City Councillor has slammed the government for not strongly recommending pupils to wear face masks on their return to school this September. A statement from Councillor Jayne Dunn ‘strongly recommending the use of face masks in secondary schools’
“As the Council’s Executive Member for Education, Children and Families, I’m strongly recommending the use of face masks in secondary schools to limit the transmission of coronavirus ahead of the return of children to school. I would also like to see the use of face masks for adults in primary and special schools, including parents who are visiting, whenever it’s not possible to socially distance. I’m extremely disappointed by this government for not strongly recommending the use of masks, especially as the transmission numbers are again
going in the wrong direction. The government’s Department for Education has side-lined Public Health and though the council has no powers to enforce mask wearing we will do everything we can to challenge government, and demand that they are more pro-active with safety. After lobbying by local councils and the unions, this government has agreed to CO2 monitors being issued to state run schools. This is a welcome U-turn, but government needs to go further and invest in proper ventilation systems. The evidence is clear from the World Health Organisation – they state that masks should be worn when one-metre distancing cannot be guaranteed and there is widespread transmission. The government should listen to the evidence as mask wearing helps protect students and staff. Unfortunately, this government have consistently failed to give parents and

schools the clarity needed, and instead of proper leadership they have repeatedly passed the buck back to schools. Our children and young people have had so much of their education disrupted and the government should be doing everything they can to ensure that they return to as safe an environment as possible. Every consideration should be given to those students and staff who may be vulnerable, or who have relatives who are, to be in the school as safely as possible. After speaking to headteachers and unions across the city, it’s clear that many are keeping in place a lot of the measures, such as staggered lunch breaks, limiting assemblies and holding staff meetings remotely. We will continue to work with all our schools and share emerging best practice, across the city, over the coming months to support full access to education for all our children and young people”.

New park unveiled The first project to be funded through the Government’s Towns Fund for Stocksbridge in north Sheffield has been unveiled this week. The major improvements to Stocksbridge Leisure Centre and the adjoining Oxley Park have now been completed and opened to the public – it’s the first piece of work in the strategic long-term plan to deliver a £24.1 million investment across the town. The £500,000 accelerated funding project has allowed much needed improvements to be made to the Leisure Centre; creating outdoor seating and a brand-new and modern children’s play area which links the centre’s café to the park. Access has also been improved with new footpaths and landscaping as well as better laid out parking for both cars and bikes. Ten further projects – including a second phase of Oxley Park improvements are also outlined in the Stocksbridge Town Investment Plan which was approved by the Government in March this year when
£24.1 million pledged was pledged for the town.
Work started on the first phase of the Leisure Centre and Oxley Park improvements in February, the new facilities are now open to the public and being enjoyed by the local community. The Friends of Oxley Park have assisted with volunteer work and consultation and the tree planting in the new play area has been carried out by the local charity Steel Valley Project. Contractors EC Surfacing and Kompan Ltd have also worked on the project which has been project managed by Sheffield City Council. The wider bid will deliver a range of projects across the town, aimed at transforming the fortunes of the town and building a sustainable future for residents and businesses. Work is now underway on the business case for the projects and further public consultation will be announced early in the autumn. The Towns Fund projects include:
• A major redevelopment of part of Manchester Road in the town centre including a new library and community facilities • Public realm improvements to the Manchester Road area as well as better links to other parts of the town
• A post 16 hub at Stocksbridge High School • A new local community bus network • Improvements to walking and cycle trails Graham Silverwood, from the Community Leisure Centre Trust and member of the Towns Fund Board said: “These improvements are absolutely fantastic, and it is wonderful to see the difference the investment is already making to our local community. “Everyone has worked so hard to turn these plans into reality in a short space of time and it really does show what can be achieved when we work together.”
Co-Chair of the Towns Fund Board, Miriam Cates MP, said: “These improvements will really make a difference to how people use and access this important local facility and its great to see this initial project has now been completed.
Cllr Julie Grocutt said: “The new facilities have been so popular over the school holidays and its lovely to see this space being used by families. Further improvements to Oxley Park and the Leisure Centre are a key part of the next phase of the funding and we’ll be talking to local
people about this more in the coming weeks.” Dates for further public consultation on the Towns Fund projects will be announced early in the autumn.

Everybody’s talking about Jamie Sheffield is set to welcome Jamie home with a very special premiere of Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, the film adaptation of the hit musical, on 17th September – the same day it launches on Amazon Prime Video around the world. In recognition of the central role Sheffield has played in the film, a premiere will be held at the Crucible and Tudor Square (where there will be a red carpet welcome) on the evening of Friday 17th with the stars of the show paying homage to Sheffield Theatres, who originally commissioned and staged the musical that the film is based on. There will also be special fan area with spaces for a lucky 96 members of the public on the day. The film was produced and directed by Sheffield-ers, Warp Films and Jonathan Butterell; with filming taking place in and around the city, and featuring many actors and supporting cast with Sheffield roots.
To celebrate this special event and the history the Jamie story has with the city, Sheffield City Council are teaming up with Warp Films (who produced the film) and Prime Video, to showcase a free display of props and costumes in the Winter Gardens from Friday 17th to Saturday 25th September for anyone to come along and get closer to the fabulous story of Jamie. The Council are also funding Sheffield based Cinema For All to organise free community screenings around the city, taking place in sync with the premiere at the Crucible, to ensure wider access and inclusivity to this great cultural production. The venues with Cinema For All screenings are: • Film Unit at University of Sheffield • Abbeydale Picture house (who will also be hosting an afterparty) • Kelham Island Film Club • The Civic in Barnsley On top of this, there will be afterparties happening in various places around the city.
Participating venues have been given special permission to use logos and artwork from the film by Prime Video, and these are being distributed by the Council once ideas and plans for venue parties/menus etc have been submitted. More information, including how to try to get one of the lucky fan spaces in Tudor Square, the costume and prop display, how to book a free ticket for a Cinema For All screening, or how to find out which venues are hosting parties can all be found online at www.welcometoSheffield.co.uk/jamie Everybody’s Talking About Jamie will be launched on Amazon Prime Video on 17th September and will be in selected cinemas across the country, including Sheffield Showroom, from the same day.

COURSES AVAILABLE Places are still available on Barnsley College’s English, Maths and English for Speakers of other Languages (ESOL) courses for anyone wanting to improve their reading, writing, numeracy and speaking skills and gain an English, Maths or ESOL qualification. English and Maths are essential skills required by all employers, colleges and universities. These courses help students gain invaluable skills and knowledge required in everyday life whilst increasing confidence in reading, writing and numeracy and improving their career prospects.
On 27 August Stocksbridge Golf Club held the annual Jamie Hobson Memorial Golf Day, to raise money for the British Heart Foundation. The day also honoured Jamie Hobson, who was the Club's Head Greenkeeper for many years. Jamie died suddenly just under three years ago from a heart attack and was only in his late 40s. Jamie's successor, Robert (Bert) Grayson and his Green's staff, decided to establish the annual event and to run it as a fund raiser for the British Heart Foundation. Robert said before the golf started that "I worked with Jamie for many years and he gave everything to make
the golf course as good as it could be. I am living with his legacy and running this day is the very least we can do in his memory." On the day over 130 players took part in the golf on the day and contributed in several ways with an entrance fee, raffle tickets and an auction in the evening. The players were a combination of Club members, greens staff from surrounding clubs and friends. Many prizes were donated by members and local businesses for the competition and the evening auction. Whilst the golf was a means to raise funds, golfers will also know that there is no

Sheffielders urged to get double jabbed NHS Sheffield Clinical Commissioning Group is advising people to get their second dose as soon as they become eligible as it means they no longer need to selfisolate. The latest figures show that whilst 95% of Sheffield residents, aged over 80, have received both doses of the covid vaccine only 74% of under 50s have had the second jab. Alun Windle, Chief Nurse and Covid Vaccination Lead at NHS Sheffield CCG, said: “Getting double jabbed is more important than ever as it’s the only way to keep your freedoms and avoid the disruptions that self-isolating brings to your work and social lives. Under 50s are far more likely to be active and socialising so it’s even more vital they get their second dose. It’s disappointing to see that fewer people in that age group have taken the opportunity for a second vaccine and I would encourage them not to delay any further. “Two doses also increases your protection against the virus and reduces your chances of becoming seriously ill, and you help others because you are less likely to spread the virus. “It’s really easy to get your jab as we have walk-in centres that are open every week and you can fit it around your availability.”
The new rules for self-isolation also apply to under 18s and the advice to those who are identified as close contacts, by NHS Test and Trace, is to get a free PCR. test as soon as possible. These can be ordered online, https://www.gov.uk/get-coronavirustest by calling 119, or going to a test site. For maximum protection the guidelines advise that people get their second dose eight weeks after their first vaccination. Alun Windle added: “You are still at risk of being infected if you come into contact with a person who has tested positive for coronavirus. It’s in your best interest to take other precautions such as wearing a face covering enclosed spaces, and limiting contact with other people, especially with anyone who is clinically extremely vulnerable. If you start to develop any of the symptoms please get tested immediately and stay in. You should self-isolate and test even if you are double jabbed. It’s better to be cautious and stay safe than run the risk of the virus running rampant in Sheffield and causing harm.” Information on how to get a vaccine in Sheffield can be found here: https://www. sheffieldccg.nhs.uk/Your-Health/covid-19 -vaccine.htm Read more about the new changes at gov. uk

Jane came to see my parents to help them protect the family home. She really made us all feel at ease, especially my parents. We had no idea what we could do to protect Mum and Dad. Having set up trusts and Lasting Power of Attorney’s, Mum and Dad can get on with their lives without worrying, knowing everything is now in place. Thank you Jane!

How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These QHHG WR EH ¿OOHG LQ ZLWK QXPEHUV WKDW complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.

Noisy dog barking
Dear Look Local,
Just a friendly reminder to those of us with dogs: just because you are used to their barking, does not mean that allowing your pet to bark outside constantly is OK. Your neighbours don’t have to tolerate it just because you do. There is specific provision for this in the Environmental Protection Act, whereby not making any effort to prevent what is in effect a statutory noise nuisance may result in a Noise Abatement Notice, and potentially a court appearance. We’ve all had a nice time sitting in our gardens over the summer - for some of us, though, the failure of neighbours to make any effort to quieten the constant noise of their pets has been very wearing. Please don’t let it be you who gets reported to the Council (who deal with this on their ratepayers’ behalf).
Climate change has made more people think about reducing the amount of carbon dioxide they produce and possibly change their home heating systems. The Upper Don Renewable Energy Group is organising another ‘Green Homes’ day where people can visit local homes which have renewable energy installations for electricity or heating and can discuss with the occupants their pros and cons. If any of your readers would like to join us for these visits, which start at 10 am on Saturday 18th September, please email me on udrenergy@gmail. com or text/phone 07707 762995 for further details. Numbers will be limited so get in touch as soon as possible. Barry Tylee Upper Don Renewable Energy Group

Get your bathroom ready for PLEA FOR OLD PHOTOS when you return from hospital tal, the carers said that the new shower tray wouldn’t work. They needed a wetroom to make sure the new wheelchair could manoeuvre into and around the bathroom. Mrs Simpson said: “Every time I called Nichola (at AHM) to let her know what was happening, she was so good about it. She was so calm and accommodating. I felt very comfortable all the way through.” After a stay in hospital, it’s wonderful to hear the words “you can go home”.
Here’s our guide to getting your bathroom ready for your return:
But if your physical needs have changed, it’s important that you can live at home safely and without any struggle. This might mean organising equipment or renovations before you come home.
Take note of what the professionals say. A doctor, nurse or occupational therapist may recommend what activities you need help with. For example, if you need a walking frame or wheelchair to move around, we’d need to know what size it is.
At AHM Installations we are used to installing bathrooms for people coming home from hospital. One of our customers, Mr Simpson, 86, unexpectedly went into hospital with Covid-19 last year. There he also had pneumonia, a superbug and a stroke and was in hospital for 7 weeks. “There was a lot of prayer,” his wife Mrs Simpson, 82, told us. Mr Simpson had been due to have a low-level shower installed but when he was ready to come home from hospi-
Know the difference between independent and assisted bathing. If your goal is to remain independent, we’d need to know whether you can sit down and stand up unaided for example, and how your mobility is likely to change over time. If a carer is going to assist you then products such as bathlifts may need to be considered. Ask a family member or close friend to help. Take the pressure off the decision
making and involve someone you trust. If the style of toilet or tiles is crucial for you, make sure they know about it in advance. Use a bathroom company you can trust. Some companies focus on selling bathroom products without understanding your preferences and needs. At AHM our priority is quality of life. There’s no point having a product unless it makes things safer and easier for you. AHM has installed thousands of accessible bathrooms over the last 20 years, so we know how to make bathrooms safe and stylish whatever your budget. We believe everyone should have access to safe, affordable bathing.

It’s all systems go for this year’s show It’s not long now until this year’s annual Penistone Agricultural Show which takes place on Saturday 11th September.
The South Yorkshire agricultural Show, which features over 150 competitive classes in everything from cattle and pigs to flower arranging and honey, is run entirely by volunteers. The team is currently busy getting ready for this one-day agricultural show which is set to attract competitors and visitors from across the country. “The Penistone Agricultural Show celebrates its 148th year in 2021 and we are so proud that we are able to put our show on again after the difficulties we all faced during the recent year. Our volunteers are pleased to be able to put on a great day out for people living in the towns, cities and villages across South Yorkshire and beyond”, said Nicholas Hoy-
land. “The Penistone Agricultural Show is a fantastic day out with everything from shire horses and poultry to sheep, cattle, pigs, goats and pedigree dogs through to farming machinery, rural crafts, handicrafts, homecrafts and horticulture. Add over 200 trade stalls, farrier demonstrations, a food hall, cookery demonstrations, hounds, brass bands, live music, three bars and children’s activities and there really is something for everybody to enjoy.” Continued on next page...

Penistone Feature Penistone Show ...continued from page 11 The event is run entirely by volunteers and the amount of preparation that goes into the event keeps the committee busy all year round. It’s a fantastic event with a huge history and the show has maintained the show’s agricultural feel and core traditions whilst giving it new content each year. The Penistone Agricultural Show is a key part of Penistone’s Agricultural heritage, involving local people, local volunteer groups on the day and the community in general as part of the team. Each year the Penistone Agricultural Society Committee also votes on a number charities to support by offering them a free trade stand at the show. This year’s chosen charities are the Yorkshire Air Ambulance, Woodhead Mountain Rescue, Heeley City Farm and the Penistone Round Table.

Volunteers ‘took over’ several zones around the centre of Penistone and filled them with seaside themed stalls and activities.
Skegness, Whitby and Scarborough made an appearance in various spots around the town centre. Kids visiting “Skegness” (aka Penistone Paramount car park – sponsored by CD Autos) had an amazing time building sandcastles on the mobile beach, eating ice cream and listening to a seaside organist. Bigger kids (including a few local policemen!) competed on the inflatable assault course, while smaller ones enjoyed the bouncy castle and other activity stalls. There were donkey rides galore at “Whitby” (aka St Johns Community Centre car park – sponsored by Pennine Law), together with a bubble cart producing supersized bubbles and amusing peep-thru boards for extra seaside fun! “Scarborough” (aka Penistone Market Barn – sponsored by Simon Blyth estate agents) provided fun-packed selection of stalls and seaside-themed activities in the market barn. Children of all ages could try their hand at a Circus workshop and there were packed crowds watching the Punch and Judy shows. The organisers completely sold out of their limited edition “Penistone” rock (kindly sponsored by Lincoln Finance Ltd)!

One of the highlights of the event was the unmissable Granny Turismo – two high octane 'old ladies' racing around on Segway-powered shopping trollies! They were a sight to behold and, with their thumping music, you could hear them coming a mile off! Several local pubs and restaurants supported the event, with the Spread Eagle and BARiSTA/ CUCiNA both providing family-friendly music throughout the day and into the evening, and Penistone Legion created an amazing ‘light-house’ in their gardens. “It was an amazing day,” explained Jon Gilbert one of the Penistone Gala volunteers. “We wanted to bring the event into town to support the local businesses and bring a smile to people’s faces – and we feel we’ve achieved that. The weather was kind to us and it was definitely a day to remember!”

TIGERS ON VERGE OF PLAY-OFFS SHEFFIELD are on the verge of play-off qualification after their biggest win of the season against Ipswich on Thursday.
The Tru Plant Tigers were in a determined mood from the get-go and set about avenging back-to-back home defeats with a lightning start - opening up an eight-point lead inside five heats. Just four last places proved key to the 52-38 victory with the result leaving Simon Stead’s side needing just one-point from the remaining six league fixtures to secure a play-off place.
Under fire Aussie Troy Batchelor carded a confidence-boosting 8+1 with fellow countryman Jack Holder topping the charts with 10+2. Recent additions Stefan Nielsen and Josh Pickering plus newly-crowned British Champion Adam Ellis all chipped in with nine points apiece. Former Owlerton favourite Danny King demonstrated his track knowledge picking up four heat victories on his way to 13 points.
“We were desperate for that. It was a really dominant team display,” said team boss Stead.
“For one reason or another we’ve never really had all the boys firing together on one night and I’ve always felt we were solid in every department which has finally made a difference.
“We spoke about the importance of this fixture before the meeting and if we carry on riding like that then we’ll be a force to be reckoned with. “It was a really dominant home display tonight and a good way to set us up for the next part of the season.”

PENTAQUA RESTARTS COMPETITIONS
Stocksbridge Pentaqua swimming club took part in its first post-lockdown swimming gala. Swim England organised a national swim festival with the purpose of bringing together county, regional and national swimmers. The Festival of Swimming has been running across the country over the last few weekends and has provided an opportunity for swimmers to race against others from different clubs – something they have not been able to do in over 15 months. The swimmers had to swim without cheering fans; no spectators were allowed into Ponds Forge due to Covid
procedures. The races could be watched via a Live Stream.
Stocksbridge Pentaqua had 9 swimmers who had met the tough eligible entry times for the event held at Ponds Forge on the 31st July and 1st August. The club was pleased with the performance of the swimmers who attended the event considering the disrupted training most had in the run up to the national event due to self isolations which prevented attendance to swimming. David Wright, head coach, said “There were lots of great swims from our team, lots of personal bests.” Pad-
dy N came in the top 3 in 4 freestyle events showing his versatility in both sprints and long distance events, whilst Finley McN, Oliver W and Phoebe McN placed in the top 6 for their age group in at least 1 of their races. If your child has been inspired by the performance of the National swimmers competing in the Olympics Tokyo, and wish to enter the world of competitive swimming, please register interest via the website www.stocksbridgepentaqua.co.uk/join-us or contact the club at pentaqua.clubroom@gmail.com

CHURCH HELD AT EMLEY
Toolstation NCEL Premier Division
the goalie. For the first time, Church had taken the lead in a league match this season.
Emley AFC 2-2 Penistone Jake Greatorex pulled off a point Church Nathan Keightley 8, Nicky Guest 57 Attendance – 404 A report by Martin Webb Only 10 miles separate the 2 clubs. However, on an unusually still night this local Derby was played between a resurgent West Yorkshire Emley and Penistone Church from South Yorkshire who have aspirations of moving up the NCEL Premier Division. Several of the players have featured for the other club at some time. After 8 minutes Nathan Keighley worked hard in outpacing the Emley defence. He took a difficult bouncing ball into the box, beat 2 defenders and stranded
blank save from a header to preserve Church's lead. Right on the stroke of half-time Church conceded after failing to clear twice and a deflected pass found an Emley player free on the right. A crisp Jack Bennett shot was rifled into the top left of goal with the final kick of the half. Half time Emley 1 Church 1 Church and Emley restarted at the same frantic pace seen in the first half. However, after 51 minutes Kieran Ryan took a difficult chance only for the goalie to save. Emley then had a 30 yard free kick at the other end that dipped just too late to trouble Jake Greatorex in the Church goal.
On 54 minutes Church regained the lead, Nathan Keighley broke down the right. His pinpoint cross was met by Nicky Guest who headed low at the far post to the left of goal. The home side were level on 67 mins when George Doyle lobbed the ball 10 yards out into the far corner of the Church goal. Nathan Keighley continued to cause the Emley defence issues with his pace and tigerish tackling. Nicky Guest then got in on the act again with a rasping 12 yard shot to the centre of goal from a 1 on 1 situation.
Church were lucky to survive with 5 minutes to go. Emley broke down the middle of the park and spread the ball wide to the left. The low cross was poked onto the Church post from 3 yards. The ball spun away to safety.
Dragons Golf Team win against Beauchief The Dragons Section of Stocksbridge Golf Club completed the last match of their summer season away to Beauchief on 26 August. In a high scoring match Beauchief won the leg 255 - 251 points. But the Stocksbridge team earlier in the season had won the home fixture 250207 points, giving them an aggregate winning margin of 501- 462 points. Section Captain, Dave Stringer, congratulated both teams with a highly competitive fixture, noting that in the second leg each pairing scored more than 40 stableford points, a rare achievement. The previous day the Dragons Section had competed at home in the Lewis Francis Texas Scramble. Teams of three took part in the format, in which players take the best shot from tee to green and score in stroke play. Horace Boothroyd, Bill Boucher and John Sykes won with a net score of 55. Two teams then came in with net 56s, but Doug Needham, Noel Weaver and Martyn Bradwell pipped Les Wight, John Methley and
Frank Hines, to second place on countback. The Ladies Section Back 9 on 26 August was won by Elaine Guest (13) with an impressive 20 points. Liana O'Sullivan (1) was second with 15 points and Heather Evans (15) third with 13 points. The Ladies then competed for the Autumn Trophy on 29 August. Hilja O'Sullivan (23) triumphed with 35 points. It was the same score as Ann Whitfield (27) and Margaret Pearson (29), but they came second and third respectively on countback. The Gents had two major competitions over the weekend. On Saturday the Scott Eustace Trophy was won by Phil Smith (28) with 42 points. David Peace (15) was second with 40 points and John Slodyczak (10) was third with 39 points. 19 of the field of 87 players in the field played to their handicap or better. Then on Sunday the Gents competed in the August Monthly Medal. Luke Bisatt
(5) won with an excellent net 62. Luke's round included 2 birdies and 13 pars and he finished level par with his gross score. Harrison McHale (8) finished a close second with a net 63, a round that included 3 birdies. Jonathan Bradley (15) was third with a net 65, finishing strongly on the 18th with a birdie 3. Ben Stringer (3) finished fourth, also with a net 65 and a round including 4 birdies, but had a higher back 9 than Jonathan. The Gents Midweek Stableford on 26 August was won by Steve Coutts (10) with 39 points. Stuart Marsh (21) finished with the same score but lost out on countback. Chay Murphy (9) was third with 38 points.

Church then could have scored after a wonderful turn by Jordan Coduri in the box, but the Emley defence just held out. Full Time Emley 2 Church 2 A fantastic advert for NCEL Premier Football, which had royally entertained the crowd of 404. On the balance of play Church will be encouraged by their dominance of long sections of this match away from home against good opposition. Manager Ian Richards It was a really good game of football tonight. Those who don’t usually come and watch NCEL games because on a Saturday they go and watch a professional side or they do other things they got treated to a really good competitive NCEL game with numerous chances for both teams.

Departing Manager of seven years said this after his departure “My decision to resign was one of the hardest decisions I have had to make, but with a heavy heart it was the right decision for myself and the club. I would like to thank all the people I have worked with over the years, players, coaches, managerial team, two ‘first-class’ Chairmen in Allen Bethel and Graham Furness, the committee and the wonderful volunteers.

Also wanted to say thank you to everybody who has been in touch over the last couple of days, it has blown me away with the amount of nice comments and I cannot thank you all enough. It’s now time to spend time with family & friends, recharge the batteries and see what happens in the future.”
