E-FIT issued as part of investigation

Officers investigating the reported sexual assault of a teenage girl have released an e-fit image of a man they are keen to identify. At around 4pm on Friday 13 August, it is reported that the 16-year-old girl was walking along Langsett Road in Hillsborough when she was approached by an unknown man. As she carried on walking, the man put his hands up the back of her top, grabbing her. She turned around and managed to push him away, and he then left the scene. Officers have worked with the girl to produce this e-fit image and they are keen to

hear from anyone who may recognise this individual. He is described as being in his early 20s and of skinny build, he had light brown hair and stubble, with notably uneven teeth, possibly with several missing. If you can help, please call 101 quoting incident number 768 of 13 August 2021. You can also give information anonymously to independent charity Crimestoppers via their website – www.crimestoppers-uk.org – or by calling their UK Contact Centre on 0800 555 111.

Arsonist set fire to 89-year-old woman's home as she slept inside An 89-year-old had to be carried from her home after an arsonist started a fire while she was sleeping inside, writes Robert Cumber for The Sheffield Star. Robert Ashford lit a fire at the front door of the victim’s house on Thompson Hill in High Green shortly after midnight on March 24 this year. Neighbours rushed to the property after the fire took hold, bravely entering the house and carrying the woman, named only as Annie, to safety via an open window. She was taken to hospital where she was treated for minor injuries. The fire was one of a number started by 37-year-old Ashford in the High Green area that night. He began his spree by setting dustbins alight in Cottam Road at around 8.40pm, before mov-

ing onto Foster Way and Potters Gate to do the same. After starting the fire at the woman’s home, with neighbouring properties having to be evacuated, he returned to Foster Way and set fire to yet another bin. Officers searching the area spotted him acting suspiciously and arrested him on suspicion of arson with recklessness to whether life was endangered. Ashford, of Sunny Bank, High Green, also admitted seven counts of arson and was sentenced at Sheffield Crown Court last Friday, August 27, to 40 months imprisonment. PC Jo Clay, the investigating officer, said: "This was a reckless and hugely distressing incident which has had a devastating impact on the victim, who was targeted in her own home.

and now he is behind bars and no longer posing a risk to the community. “At the heart of this awful case is a fantastic demonstration of bravery from several members of the public, who rushed to help the victim, Annie. “Father and son Martin and Matthew Goudge who live nearby, spotted the incident unfolding and rushed to Annie’s aid – putting their own safety at risk to ensure she was OK. They managed to get into the property and carried her to safety through an open window. “Had it not been for their quick thinking and courage, this incident could have had a truly tragic outcome. It’s right that we as a force recognise their actions with a commendation, well done both of you.”

“Ultimately, Ashford’s actions could have resulted in loss of life. Thankfully, that is not the case

School to open its doors Stocksbridge High School is opening its doors later this month. Headteacher, Andy Ireland tells Look Local about the past 18 months and what the future holds. It has been my pleasure and privilege to welcome students back to Stocksbridge High School over the last few days. Students have made a fantastic start to the school year and have adapted brilliantly to their new timetables and routines. The pandemic has, and continues to, present many challenges in education but it has also developed the resolve of the school community to succeed despite the uncer-

tainty and disruption we have faced. I remain impressed by the resilience of our students and grateful to families for their ongoing partnership and support. Despite the pandemic, Stocksbridge High School has continued to develop the curriculum, our teaching and our pastoral support of students. The GCSE outcomes of 2021 were fair and rigorously generated and they were also the most successful in the school’s history. This is a trend I am determined to continue well into the future. Our students are made in Stocksbridge but ready for the world! If you are considering secondary education for your

children and would like to come and see our school for yourself, please do come along to our open evening on Monday 27th September 2021. We open our doors at 4.30pm and there will be opportunities to tour the school and, importantly, to discuss what we offer with current students and staff. I will share information about our ethos, curriculum and care along with information about our current success and our vision for the future. It is exciting to be able to host an in-person open evening again, but please be reassured that we will take Covid precautions to make the event safe. We would love to see as many Y5 and Y6 pupils from the surrounding area and beyond to come and experience what, I hope, becomes your school in the future. In the meantime, there is much information on the school website: www.stocksbridgehigh.co.uk and you can keep up to date with the school by following us on Twitter and Facebook. Stocksbridge High School Open Evening, Monday 27th September 2021, 4.30pm to 6.30pm

Ponti’s Italian Kitchen is back! With a brand-new menu and a whole lot of love from Emilia-Romagna Ponti’s Italian Kitchen - one of north Sheffield’s favourite dining out and entertainment venues – has launched its distinctive new menu this month as well as a fantastic, packed line up of live music events. After a difficult year for hospitality the team at the beautiful Fox Valley restaurant couldn’t be happier to be greeting their guests back through their doors, with the warm Ponti’s Italian Kitchen welcome which has seen discerning South Yorkshire diners take to their hearts since it first opened five years ago. The team have been busy working on their new menu, designed by Chef Roberto with some fabulous new dishes for guests to enjoy. The new dishes include a stunning Pollo Involtino, Penne Salsiccia ‘Nduja e Funghi and a delicious Ponti’s Italian Kitchen take on Pappardelle alla Bolognese; all served with the exceptional service and attention to detail that the restaurant team are well known for. A new Antipasto Misto sharing plate has also been added to the menu with a specially sourced selection of melt in the mouth Italian cheeses and cured meats – including a new 30 month aged parmesan from Emilia-

Romagna, the region of Italy which is the inspiration for the restaurant’s unique and authentic menu. The flavours and the provenance of the food are the key ingredients for a perfect Ponti’s experience and the team have also introduced a new Josper grill selection in the Fox Valley menu. This unique style of cooking meat enhances the flavour of the high-quality cuts that the kitchen team source from local producers. A new wine menu has also been created which still features all the Italian favourites which perfectly pair with the authentic menu, along with the addition of some new headline wines for customers wanting to try something a little different and special. It’s this attention to detail which has made Ponti’s Italian Kitchen one of only a handful of UK restaurants to be awarded the coveted Ospitalità Italiana award – bestowed by the Italian Chamber of Commerce on restaurants which give a truly authentic Italian experience. Restaurant manager Argys Myrtja said: “Here at Ponti’s we are always focussed on creating that uniquely Italian culinary experience and wel-

come. We have had such a great response from our customers since we re-opened and it is just fantastic for the whole team to see the restaurant full and people enjoying themselves and enjoying the new menu – the feedback has been fantastic.” Regular special musical gala evenings are also proving popular – including appearances from an ever-popular Elvis Presley tribute act, and performances from the well-known local singer Paul Pashley. Plans are already underway for the popular Carols by Candlelight in December and tickets are also on sale for the New Year’s Eve party. Bookings are now open for Christmas parties with customers keen to have the traditional festive gatherings that they missed out on last year. Ponti’s Italian Kitchen can be found in the piazza area at Fox Valley in North Sheffield, S36 2AE. For details of events, party bookings and the restaurant’s new menu visit the website at www.pontis.co.uk or give Argys a call on 01142 88 7475 to book your authentic Italian experience.

Bank Holiday Golf Bonanza The August Bank Holiday Texas Scramble at Stocksbridge Golf Club saw a feast of low scoring from the teams taking part. Fifteen three ball teams took part in the competition and everyone one of them broke 60 with their net scores. Conditions were cool, but very calm and this helped with the low scoring. To make the format a little more challenging, the teams were selected on a mixture of low, middle and high handicaps. It was a shotgun start with each team starting from different holes on the course at the same time. The Texas Scramble format allows each team to select the best shots from tee to green and the winners were Dave Buxton, Dennis Haley and Brian Dobb who came in with a net 54. Their round included 5 birdies and only one dropped shot on the 13th. There were then three teams coming in with net

scores of 55, but Chris Naylor, Jonathan Bradley and Steve Cain took second place on countback, again with a round including 5 birdies. Chay Murphy, Elliott Rogan and Andy Taylor took third place. Danny Costello, Ian Hulbert and Julian Wilkinson were fourth. The second team-based competition of the week took place on 4 August with the Gents Section competing for the Alf Peace Trophy. The format was a better ball stableford, with an allowance of 85% of each player's handicap. The winners, by a clear 3-point margin, were Martin Bye and Julian Wilkinson with a score of 47 points. Craig Allen and Carl Thomas were second with 44 points. Eddie Steele and Lee Hydes were third with 42 points, the same score as David Peace and Glyn Stainforth, but with a better back 9.

Earlier in the week the Gents Section also competed for the September mid-week Monthly Medal. Peter Finney (4) won by a two-shot margin with a net 63, a birdie three on the 18th helping the margin of victory. Lee Hydes (9) was second with a net 65, the same score as Eddie Steele (12) and Neil Elliott (13) who were 3rd and 4th respectively on countback. The Ladies competed in the weekly 9-hole competition on 3 September and Bev Sykes (14) triumphed with 18 points. Ann Whitfield (14) was second with 17 points and Sam Wood (26) third with 14 points. The Ladies then competed for a Stableford Prize on 5 September. Sue Hill (24) won with a commanding 4-point margin, scoring 35 points. Alison Sedgwick (33) was second with 31 points and Ann Whitfield (26) was third with 30 points.

Police speed check in Grenoside Police were out speed checking last week following concerns from the community in Grenoside. Officers were deployed to Stephen Lane. “In the main, the majority of road users were sticking to the speed limit, but for those who weren't will be hearing from our Ticket Office. We continue to deploy to those areas you tell us about on a weekly basis so if you have any concerns please get in touch.” SYP said

Thank you to everyone who came to the cream teas in the village hall over the bank holiday weekend. It was good to see so many people enjoying themselves and catching up after months of enforced restrictions. The support as always was much appreciated. The next event is a table top sale on Saturday 11 September from 10am – 2pm. Tables £10. To book contact 0784 3375070 Thank you once again from the village hall fundraising team.

As a parent of three children with varying additional needs, (ASD, hard of hearing, and learning difficulties) who each attend a different school (two separate specialist and one mainstream) I feel the need to point out how important facial expressions are as part of communication and learning to do so. I cannot speak for other parents, but i would not feel comfortable sending my vulnerable children to a place without faces and a smile. Covid isn’t going anywhere and if the vaccine works, surely there is no need? Are we meant to wear masks forever? N.J.W.

What’s happened to Clough Dyke? I took a walk today (1st Sept) down Deepcar’s hidden gem, the rarely trod footpath beside Carr Grove, down from Carr Road to Manchester Road. It is usually a delight to see Clough Dyke emerge from its culvert and tumble down the hillside to enter a culvert again in order to pass under Carr Road. But it was no pleasure this time. The water was heavily discoloured with a grey sediment. Where the flow was slower the surface was covered with a horrible looking slime. The stream in Fox Glen has dried up at the moment, so the contaminant must be entering at some point in between. This little stream is a treasure and needs looking after. I have reported the matter to the Environment Agency and will report back, assuming of course that they get back to me. G Shepherd

MASK WEARING IN SCHOOLS Dear Editor, I am writing in response to Councillor Dunn’s feel for the need of face masks in schools, particularly specialist schools, but also including mainstream.

NOISY BARKING Good afternoon, I’ve just received a copy of this weeks look local, I read an article regarding a noisy dog barking! Could you shed some light as to what area this is happening, as I also have a noisy dog that barks around the clock and disturbed my summer. I would like to know if it’s the same said dog barking, as it’s beginning to affect my sleeping in the the day as I find it difficult to sleep at night as I was in the police force for many year working night.

4th September to 9th October Preview 7:30pm Friday 3rd September – 7:30-9:30pm Cupola Gallery, 178a Middlewood Road, Sheffield S6 1TD Opening times: Monday – Saturday 10-6pm

Wow! Can’t believe it’s September ! Anyone out there heard about further public consultation meetings about the use of our money in the Stocksbridge Towns Fund development? Maybe I should be looking a bit harder but we all have busy lives... When I do go to one I am looking forward to banging on a bit about that funicular thingy. To be honest I’ve done a little bit of public consultation on it of my own and the overwhelming response I’ve had has been,to quote John McEnroe “you cannot be serious”. Having recently become a grandparent my main concern is that any civil engineering project using our money must conform to net zero goals. I can see how a passenger train link to Sheffield could do it but nobody has been able to explain to me how a project aimed at attracting people in cars often to buy yet more over packaged imported stuff largely made of plastic can ever repay the cost in carbon emissions of all the concrete and steel in its’ construction. "A ceramic and textile exhibition of anthropomorphic animal characters in domestic and fantastical settings revealing and hiding stories in their silent splendour. " Karen Sherwood, Director Teapots, cups, plates and saucers fill a dresser, meanwhile the circus is in town; animals move among the trees and rabbits lie in bed. Story telling sits at the heart of Karen Shapley’s work. Using textiles and ceramics she weaves stories, using traditions and her past, into fabulous creations. After studying Contemporary Crafts at Manchester Metropolitan University Karen began her career looking at ceramic domestic wear, transforming them from functional to decorative items. This was where her iconic use of textiles and ceramics began. Subsequent solo shows allowed her the opportunity to develop the story element in her work. She began making characters using various fabric, clothing and accessories to ‘write’ stories for each piece. The work at face value appears simple and innocent but a closer inspection made by investigating the layers of meaning concealed in the adornment of her creations, reveals deeper stories, confronting family life, relationships and even death. “I discovered a true love of making ‘characters’ which developed into animals. I am a nature lover at heart and as a child my father would frequently take me out for

Local Notices

nature walks. These involved moments standing still and quiet whilst my father ‘spotted’ birds. Life in the countryside was a little brutal at that time and I often saw trophy dead crows, moles, rooks etc dangling from farmers fences. I knew then that nature, and life, wasn’t all plain sailing and cosy, it had a harsh reality that I freely accepted. In my work to date I have added historic found badges, tokens and textiles to make reference to the history of our culture. The characters take the form of mostly British animals with a few exotic species but all relate to my culture and background.” Karen Shapley The exhibition gathers work from her entire career which spans 15 years to show not only where she has come from but the new direction her work is taking. Having parted with her ceramics studio last year Karen found liberation through her use of found materials. Rather than making ceramics, pieces of broken china and shells are mosaicked onto boxes, pots and other objects to create her characters, as well as accessories including plinths and trolleys. At the heart of the exhibition will be a series of new works dealing with bereavement and Karen’s experience of the pandemic in a series of pieces centred around the death of her mother and the birth of her grandchild.

Bard of Barnsley Ian McMillan is returning to Stannington on Friday 1st October with his Sheffield-based collaborator acclaimed composer Luke Carver-Goss to play a date promoted by Stannington Library in The Lomas Hall. The pair played last played the venue in 2017 and almost brought the house down. They were scheduled to return in 2020, but that event, like so many, fell victim to COVID-19 restrictions. “When Ian and Luke visited us in 2017, the show they presented was clever, engaging

and very, very funny,” said Stannington Library’s events organiser Phil Warhurst. “The audience loved them. It was a bitter disappointment not to be able to welcome them again last October. Thankfully though, Ian, Luke and their management have bent over backwards to help us stage the show this year instead.” As part of the deal, Ian and Luke will visit Bradfield Dungworth School earlier the same day to present a words-and-music workshop. Also organised by Stannington Library, this event is funded by the school’s parent teacher association.

“In 2017, it was Shooters Grove School that enjoyed Ian and Luke’s special brand of teaching through fun, and they went down a storm,” said Phil. “I’m sure they will repeat that success for this new audience.” Tickets for the event cost £15.00 and are available from Stannington Library or from eventbrite.co.uk. Currently, limits apply to the number of people allowed in Stannington Library at one time.

Chapeltown make fine sart to the season Chapeltown RBL were quick out of the blocks in their first game of the season with a Mitch Savage free kick finding it’s way under the Shakey keeper in the first minute. Jay Carter doubled the lead after 4 minutes finding the bottom corner from an acute angle. Savage then turned provider as his ball across the box was met by full back Jacob Walkland at the back post. Captain Jack Marlow found the top corner from distance after

the hour mark, and good work down the left from Ben Stringer resulted in an own goal to make it 5. Jay Carter was brought down in the area late on and picked himself up to finish the penalty with confidence. Legion will now face Eckington away in the next round of the League cup. *Please note there is an EGM for current members at the club on September 15th 2021 at 8pm

TIGERS BOOK PLAY-OFF DESPITE DEFEAT SHEFFIELD have booked their place in the play-offs in their first Premiership season with a warning from boss Simon Stead ‘we must do better’.

They crashed to a 54-36 defeat at a rejuvenated Belle Vue on Monday despite keeping the scoreline close until they suffered a late collapse. King’s Lynn’s defeat at Wolverhampton made mathematically certain of a top four spot for the Owlerton men but Stead was in no mood for celebration. Jack Holder failed to win a race all night on a track where he notched a staggering 19 points on his previous visit and Troy Batchelor suffered three last places in his four outings. Holder charged into the tapes in Heat 13 and went from 15 metres in the rerun with little chance of making any impact on the pacy Belle Vue bowl. “Not good enough, simple as that,” was Stead’s verdict.

“We were beaten by a better team and it’s disappointing, I’m left frustrated again. “They were better than us and I’m not going to offer any excuses, we just weren’t good enough. “We need to lift ourselves for Thursday when we go to King’s Lynn and we know the areas of the team where we didn’t perform as we should expect.” Meanwhile Tigers have rearranged their outstanding home fixture against King’s Lynn for Sunday September 26 at 5pm. It’s the only date they could find before the play-offs. BELLE VUE 54: Dan Bewley 14+1, Steve Worrall 12, Brady Kurtz 9, Tom Brennan 9, Charles Wright 5+2, Jye Etheridge 3+1, Simon Lambert 2. SHEFFIELD 36: Adam Ellis 11, Jack Holder 7+1, Kyle Howarth 6+1, Josh Pickering 6, Kyle Bickley 3, Troy Batchelor 3, Danyon Hume 0.

church win despite red card Albion Sports 0-1 Penistone Church FC A report by Martin Webb A still cool evening saw Penistone Church visit Albion Sports, who share Farsley Celtic’s ground. The sparse crowd included some 30 Church supporters. Church opened up the match with a high press and forced Albion Sports back, from this early work they created a chance to shoot, but this went narrowly over the bar. Church had the better of the first 10 minutes, but Albion Sports looked tricky on the break, with a good move ending in a shot over the bar. Church were playing the better football as half time approached, but were still being frustrated by the final pass or shot going astray. A massive mix up in the Albion Sports defence created by a high press on the goalie isolated him. Nathan Keightley took the ball away from goal turned and stranded the goalie to score to the centre of goal with the last kick of the half. This was Church’s first win of the season and they thoroughly de-

We’ve missed that feeling to get those three points, it’s so valuable in the manner that we did it’s so important. In terms of the performance it was no better than our previous five games in the league (apart from first half against Mansfield). The difference tonight is we didn’t make any individual errors that cost us goals we were a little bit more clinical with that goal that we scored which was well taken by Nathan again but the goal came from really hard work, desire and attitude from Nathan and Jordan Coduri to work the keeper and work the defender to force the mistake. Stocksbridge fell oaks - rugby Stocksbridge RUFC 40-0 Sheffield Oaks Globe Travel sponsored Stocksbridge Rugby got their new league season underway with a resounding 40pts to nil victory over near neighbours Sheffield Oaks at the weekend. Under new skipper Adam Roles-Middlehurst, the team looked sharp, and solid in defence, and bright and inventive in attack. Blue skies and a sizeable crowd reflected for a minute’s silence in tribute to Mark Jenkins and Oliver Sinclair, then it was down to business.

When the visitors did threaten the home defence were able to hold firm, holding out 29 phases at one stage, with Roles-Middlehurst

The man of the match award went to Ricky Rowett for a great all round display, with Andy Beale not far behind him in an encouraging team performance. Stocksbridge Rugby

Bacup Borough v Penistone Church (a) Kick off 3-00 pm

The 2nd stanza followed a similar pattern with Stocksbridge having the lions share of possession and territory, further tries from Newton, the evergreen Joe Jones and a double from the hard working Ricky Rowett, put Stocksbridge firmly in control, with Bowskill and Jack Spencer improving them all.

CRICKET...

The 1st XI were bowled out for a very disappointing 68, to end any hopes of clinching the league on the last league game of the season. They travel to Hollinsend next week to take on De Le Salle in the Brian Whinston Cup Final, where they will be looking to finish a really positive season on a high.

and Spencer strong in the tackle in midfield. The bench also did their job with the experience of Ricky James, the bulk of Liam Roebuck and the youthful exuberance of Jack ‘milky’ Martin also contributing when called upon. Only an apparent high tackle on the jet heeled Ryan Smith saved a further try, and should have been punished with a red card, however the official waved play on.

Stocksbridge 1st XI travelled to Hathersage for the last league game of the season and the last time they will play a league game in the YDCL. Totley needed to slip up in their game to give the 1st a chance of winning the league. Skipper Andy Hibbert won the toss and elected to bowl first. An opening stand of 37 for Hathersage was broken by Andy Hibbert who claimed the first wicket. Joe Hibbert was the next to strike as he removed the other opener with the score 51-2. From then on things didn’t go very well for the 1st withHathersage taking control and posting 172-3 off their 40 overs.

served the 3 points in this thrilling match.

Stocksbridge were out of the blocks early, dominant scrummaging by the burly Gary Woodcock, and former supremo Rhys Keenan, kept a kept a regular supply of the ball and the home side made good use of it. Rowett and the towering Beale broke the visitors line on a regular basis, and the tries soon followed with Newton bagging the first of a brace for him, and that man Frith on the spot to glide over from close range, with Bowskill on target with a conversion attempt.

will travel to the East Coast next week with some confidence to visit Hornsea RUFC, before entertaining Mosborough Rugby at Coal Pit Lane the following week. Afterwards, Club Captain Adam Roles-Middlehurst said ‘we have been training well, and working on a game plan, and it was pleasing to see many aspects of it on show during the game’ adding ‘it’s just 1 win, but it’s a good start, and it’s always pleasing to nil any opponent’.

Stocksbridge 2nd XI hosted Hallam this weekend in their final game of the season. Hallam won the toss and elected to bat on a wicket that offered plenty for the bowlers. Stocksbridge made an excellent start with openers Hargreaves and Brearley bowling superbly early on. Hargeaves struck first, removing the dangerous Ide for just 1. The wickets continued to fall, following some sharp catching from Siddall, Murfin and Thwaites, Hallam had crumbled to 27-3. Brearley then produced 2 excellent in-swingers to reduce the score to 28-5, with Hallam sinking without trace. Thwaites brought veteran seamer Les Harris and young leg spinner Jack Firth into the attack, looking to wrap up the Hallam innings. Harris showed no sign of rust, ripping his way through the lower order. Young Firth joined the party as well, picking up the wicket of Charlesworth. Hallam were bowled out for just 69, inside 27 overs. Harris the pick of the bowlers with 4-11, however a superb collective effort. The Stocksbridge reply got off to a poor start, with opener Firth falling for just 6. Ogley and James Hague kept the scoreboard ticking over with a couple of quality boundaries, as Stocksbridge moved towards victory. Ogley was dismissed for 19, bringing in-form Jack Murfin to the crease. Murfin wasted no time at all in seeing Stocksbridge over the line, destroying the Hallam attack on his way to a ridiculous 31 not out off just 11 balls. The victory was brought up in typical Murfin fashion with a huge 6. An emphatic win for the 2nds, with the game wrapped up inside 3 hours. A very positive season for the 2nds, will plenty of highs to take into next season’s new venture as Stocksbridge join the YCSPL.
