HIGH GREEN MAN JAILED FOR SEXUAL OFFENCES AGAINST A CHILD Kevin Yeardley, 64, of Pembroke Crescent, High Green, pleaded guilty to six offences, including sexual activity with a child under 16, sexual assault of a child under 13 and causing a child to engage in sexual activity. His offences were committed between 1999 and 2005 and relate to one victim. Yeardley pleaded guilty at a hearing on 23 August and was sentenced on 28 September at Sheffield Crown Court. He was served a nine-year custodial sentence and has also been placed on the sex offenders register. Mr Yeardley is the former brother-in-law of recently convicted, Anthony Hardcastle, also of High Green. Mr Hardcastle was sentenced to seven years for sexual abuse of an 8-year old girl, who’s victim is now in her 50’s.

Temporary Detective Sergeant Susi Taylor said: “This man’s actions were nothing short of horrific, he has rightly been served a substantial custodial sentence for his crimes.

“The distress his actions have caused will no doubt have a long-term impact; those involved are being supported by specialist services to help them attempt to come to terms with what has happened.

If you would like to speak to someone, please call 101 for support and advice today.

Convicted: Kevin Yeardley (right) Anthony Hardcastle (below)

“It is absolutely vital that any victim of child sexual abuse feels they can speak out and seek help. “I want to reassure the public that South Yorkshire Police is committed to investigating all reports and we have specially trained officers and partner agencies who can offer support and advice. “In some cases, it takes a relative, family member, friend or loved one to take those first steps so my message is to everyone, if you have concerns, speak to us. “Your actions could help safeguard or protect someone who is vulnerable, and they could also bring offenders to justice.”

94 YEAR OLD BARRED FROM CLUB A 94-year-old veteran of the Royal Navy, who was a life member of Lowood Club in Deepcar, has had his membership torn up after supporting a campaign to have his son, who was sacked as club steward last year, reinstated. Jack Clayton, who has been a member of the club for 45 years, has received a letter from the Lowood committee cancelling his membership and justifying this by claiming he has been involved in a campaign of “personal insults, lies, and a hate campaign via social media that led to damage of Lowood committee members' personal property.” His son John and wife Julie, who were steward and stewardess of the club, gained much support in the village after contesting their dismissal. A campaign was launched to try and force a face-toface meeting between club members and the committee over the sackings with 800 members of the public supporting the campaign via an online petition and over 60 club members petitioning the Lowood committee to halt dismissals and convene an

emergency general meeting (EGM). But all this was ignored by the committee.

Then John and Julie failed in their bid to get their dismissal overturned by an employment tribunal because they had not been employed by the club for the statutory two years. Now the club committee has moved to disqualify members who supported the campaign to have John and Julie re-instated. Jack Clayton's daughter, Diane McHale, said: “My dad, aged 94, has just come out of hospital following major surgery and he receives a letter telling him that he has been barred from Lowood Club. “My dad, along with other members, has been barred for daring to ask for an EGM backed by over 60 club members to show their disdain at how Lowood was been run by secretary Mr Brian Firth and the committee. Up to now the club rules have been ignored and no EGM has been called.” Former club member Dave Hallewell is another one to receive the dismissal letter. He said: “I received a letter

banning me from the club and having my membership revoked. The reason given is that I was personally involved in damaging committee members' property and that I led a hate campaign against the committee. I am totally disgusted that I would be accused of any wrongdoing and find this insulting and slanderous.” Mr Hallewell said he was only guilty of supporting a family who are friends of his through a difficult time and helping them with their employment tribunal. He said: “It seems anyone who supported an EGM to help bring a 'no confidence' vote against the committee has received this letter terminating their membership. The committee has not followed club rules when wishing to bar somebody from the club. All this has been done in a very underhand way.” It is not clear how many have had their membership cancelled by the club committee, but some of these 'ex-members' now intend taking action to have the Lowood Club

A young enthusiastic worker Ian was described as ‘always first on site and last on site’. It wasn’t long before the hard-working Ian bought his first and current premises on Manchester Road in Deepcar, and set up his own window company Deepcar. Through the morning, the three groups were provided with an overview of stretcher handling, casualty care and search tasks. This enabled each group to get hands on experience and learn a bit about the

process of how a Mountain Rescue callout could develop.

After lunch, which was provided by the teams fantastic supporters group, the three groups joined as one at Dead Edge where they were given a scenario and the opportunity to put all they had learnt into practice. With WMRT personnel there only to offer guidance, the group was left to develop their own search plan and execute.

Free parking given for hundreds of Sheffield Council staff Hundreds of Sheffield councillors and employees have access to free parking despite politicians urging residents to walk and cycle more, reports the BBC.

staff were allocated permits "to access an opportunity to park, rather than a parking space, either within our core building car parks or on-street littleused bays or car parks".

Some 377 councillors and staff can use parking spaces in council buildings, a Freedom of Information request reveals.

"This avoids a significant expenditure on resources authorising, processing and refunding legitimate expenses claims and staff having to pay and display then awaiting refund for business use expenses," it added.

Councillor Douglas Johnson, executive member for transport, said the council should lead by example by promoting alternatives to private cars. He said: "We all need to do our bit to use cars less." The parking provision is not based on seniority or grade but is available for councillors who drive, rather than use public transport, for council activities, the Local Democracy Reporting Service said. Blue badge holders or staff with mobility problems are eligible to use the free parking as well as staff who use their vehicles for business use. The council said in its FoI response that councillors and

Resting on the edge of the Peak district, The Castle Inn has always been the heart of this small idyllic village, with the Peak District Walk running right through the centre; a walk that takes in breathtaking countryside and finishes in Matlock. The Castle Inn welcomes walkers, families and dogs at all times and even serves a pets plate on Sundays, although visitors on Sundays are advised to book due to growing popularity of the home made roast dinners. As of July last year the pub saw a new landlady move in, Rachael Adams, who has been the chef there since 2018. During our last lockdown she updated the décor and gave it a more modern feel. Mr Johnson said: "There are some good reasons why councillors and staff need access to cars, including for people with severe disabilities and those who need to use the car on legitimate official business. "However, this can and should be minimised. "Using cars less means cleaner air and safer roads and supports our public transport network." He said the authority should also consider investing in electric cars and bikes for officers to carry out visits on official business.

As winter quickly approaches there will be changes to the pubs opening hours, as well as the addition of new hearty dishes on the menu, so keep your self up to date by following The Castle Inn on Facebook, Instagram or check in your Look Local.

50 YEARS OF ST LUKE’S HOSPICE CARE IN SHEFFIELD ONE of Sheffield’s best loved charities is launching a year of celebration to mark 50 years of care for people throughout the city.

It was in October 1971 that St Luke’s Hospice, the first facility of its kind outside of London, opened its doors to the terminally ill people of Sheffield. Through the vision and passion of St Luke’s founder, local GP Professor Eric Wilkes, the

public of Sheffield – volunteers, supporters, professionals and businesses – joined together to create a pioneering organisation that has touched the lives of thousands of Sheffield families.

St Luke’s not only provides support for many people with terminal cancer but also cares for people with other illnesses including neurological conditions such as motor neurone disease, HIV and end stage heart, lung and kidney conditions.

Since its launch, St Luke’s has supported more than 40,000 patients and their families and Around 15 per cent of patients are cared for now offers specialist care to almost 2,000 pa- on the St Luke’s In Patient Centre in Little tients every year. Common Lane but the majority - around 85 per cent - are supported in their own homes by the St Luke’s Community Team. And today the care has expanded to include bereavement support for families and support for care homes, amongst many other groundbreaking initiatives. From its earliest stages, St Luke’s set the pattern for hospice care, creating a model that today sees more than 200 independent hospices around the UK and thousands more worldwide. St Luke’s Chief Executive Peter Hartland said: “I know that the City of Sheffield is truly proud of St Luke’s Hospice, its place in history, and the values on which it is founded and operates. “We owe a huge debt of gratitude to Eric Wilkes, his family, and all those who gave so much to create it and it is wonderful that the same principles of individual and dignified

care that Eric believed in are still ‘the St Luke’s way’ today. “As St Luke’s reaches its 50th birthday, we thank all those who continue to strive to keep St Luke’s here for Sheffield - volunteers, supporters, donors and of course the incredible staff who have worked so amazingly across the pandemic to ensure St Luke’s was there every day. “We need to raise 75 per cent of our annual running cost ourselves - and that can’t be done without the continued support of the people of Sheffield. “On behalf of everyone St Luke’s has helped, and will help, a huge thank you for your kindness, generosity, enthusiasm and passion, which has helped St Luke’s to reach this milestone birthday. “The pandemic means that we’ve had to delay our plans to celebrate St Luke’s 50th anniversary with supporters in Sheffield, but look out for more later this year and through 2022. “After such a tough eighteen months, this will be even more special, and together we can ensure that St Luke’s remains here for the next 50 years.”

HIGH DEMAND FOR NEW HOMES IN WHARNCLIFFE SIDE Prospective homeowners have snapped up a whopping 30 percent of homes for sale at a new housing development before the first plot has even finished construction, according to developer Erris Homes.

Cloverleaf Court is a new development of 13 four-bedroom family homes on the site of the former Cloverleaf Car Sales on Main Road, Wharncliffe Side. Of the eight homes released for sale, four have already been reserved off-plan by eager house hunters - before the first customers have even moved onto the development. The first homebuyers at Cloverleaf Court are preparing to settle into their new homes before Christmas. Customers Jason Slater and Laura Slater (pictured), fell so in love with their new home that they even persuaded their parents to reserve the home right next door to theirs. Explaining what makes the development so attractive to buyers, sales manager Nick Ollis said, ‘We truly believe the design-led approach Erris Homes have taken in plan-

tion 36 of the M1, making it the ideal neighbourhood for those commuting to Sheffield, Leeds, Manchester and beyond. Erris Homes are offering help to house hunters with a property to sell with their popular Part Exchange and Smart Move schemes - in conjunction with The PX Partnership and Sheffield estate agent Redbrik - meaning they can sell their existing home and Erris Homes will cover the costs.

ning these homes ensures every home fully meets the demands of modern family living. ‘With integral garages, spacious rear gardens and enhanced specifications as standard, the homes on offer at Cloverleaf Court are ideal for families seeking their forever home in the north of Sheffield.’ The development sits a mere stone’s throw away from Wharncliffe Side Primary School and is conveniently located just off the A616. Cloverleaf Court is also only a 12-minute drive from junc-

Meanwhile, key workers can also save thousands on a new home at Cloverleaf Court with the developer’s Key Worker Deposit Contribution Scheme. The Cloverleaf Court sales office is open Friday – Monday, 10am – 5pm weekly. Prices on the development start from £330,000 and Erris Homes will be releasing homes for sale on the second phase of the development in the coming months.

The Utilita Arena Sheffield, along with its sister venue Sheffield City Hall got off to a flying start as the venues re-opened in September with the big name shows and audiences making a safe return as entertainment finally returned to the city’s venues. It was announced in August that the historic entertainment sites would reopen and with 37 shows watched by over 66,000 customers across the two venues fans are once again enjoying the wide variety of live entertainment the venues have to offer. With a recent recruitment drive hiring hundreds of new staff, Sheffield City Hall and the Arena have been able to move to the next phase of a return to normality now that organized indoor events and mass gatherings have been able to reopen and return. September highlights included sell-out shows from hometown bands Heaven

Steve NOBLE 3.5.51 – 7.9.21 MY LOST LOVER I have only just lost you, the pain is hard to bear. Do I have to go through life knowing you’re not there? Please, someone explain to me why he had to go, are there any reasons? I really need to know. I sit here and remember all the lovely times we shared, the talks, the laughter, of everyone you cared. I am told the pain will ease in time, and I will think of him without a tear. But that will be impossible as I need to have him here. He was my very world, my ever guiding star. Just kiss me softly on the cheek, and tell me where you are. Miss you forever, your loving Wife Sue Bouncer misses you too xx AS WE LOOK BACK As we look back over time, we find ourselves wondering, Did we remember to thank you enough for all you have done for us. For all the times you were by our sides to help and support us, To celebrate our successes, to understand our problems and accept our defeats. Or for teaching us by your example, the value of hard work, good judgment, courage and integrity. We wonder if we ever thanked you for the sacrifices you made to let us have the very best and for the simple things, Like laughter, smiles and times we shared. If we have forgotten to show our gratitude enough for all the things you did, We’re thanking you now And we are hoping you knew all along how much you mean to us. To a much loved Dad Damian and Louise xx The Noble family would like to thank all the lads from Barnsley Royals Fishing Club and The Hornsea Society plus the lads from The Steelworks for attending, also Dr Moulsher and Valley Medical Centre, all the lovely nurses that looked after Steve, Dr Hornbuckle and Weston Park, also Martin and Sheila from TW Birks. Thank you for your kindness. So helpful.

over many years. How many other people who have been charged by Wayne Couzen and ended up in court over the years? How many times did he take the stand and swear on the bible to tell the truth and nothing else but the truth. His work colleagues would have known too well – did they cover-up him? (But can our local MP) an why not bring back hanging? If only its those in the police force who are paid by all of us tax payers. Wayne Couzen was not just a murderer but a police liar!

The disease is a major concern for some older vegetarians and vegans (veg*ns). Many of us worry about needing care, fearing we may lose the ability to choose a diet in accordance with our beliefs and values.

Can Boris Johnson explain??

BRING BACK HANGING If murderer Wayne Couzens lives lets say 30 years?? How much will this cost us tax payers to keep one inside? Crime doesn’t pay say politicians?? (Our prisons are over-crowded)

Can any MP or Prime Minister tell us why should the murderer be kept in prison for the rest of his life, whilst the rest of us tax payers pay for a convicted murderer to be looked after, whilst the rest of us working people have lost our jobs through no fault of our own. Some people are going to lose £20 per week or £80 a month. Our household bills are rising by £139 per year! People are having to go to food banks. So they tell us work always pays and crime doesn’t. Police murderer Wayne Couzens will have non of these worries, he’ll be kept and looked after for the rest of his life in prison. Whilst the rest of us tax-payers pay for this luxury!

The pack will help to explain the laws protecting those with special dietary needs; sources of support if your rights aren’t being recognised; and simple actions you can take to protect your rights. These include making a statement of your wishes and care preferences, helping future carers to understand your needs.

Local Notices

It is vitally important that people plan for their future and know their rights. VfL believes that needing care should not mean losing the right to have and practice their values. Contact the charity to request a pack or visit the website for more information.

We hope to help as many veg*ns as possible to maintain their beliefs and be treated with JH - Stocksbridge dignity in care. Yours sincerely Joe Barson, Advocacy & Policy Officer, Vegetarian for Life

BUSES TO STRIKE

Bus workers are to go on strike in South Yorkshire in a dispute over pay, a union has confirmed.

The Rail, Maritime and Transport union said members working for Stagecoach in the South West, Yorkshire and the East Midlands would strike on 18 October. The RMT union said it was making the announcement after ballots showed support for industrial action. Stagecoach said the union was making "unrealistic and unaffordable" demands, but added it remained open to talks.

"It's well established now that we are facing a national shortage of bus drivers as staff leave over poor pay and conditions. It is ridiculous that Stagecoach have chosen this moment to hammer their staff over pay. The consequences for local services will be horrific."

Children at the heart of everything we do

On 1st October, Sheffield's five HWRCs will change to their winter opening hours of 9.30am until 3.30pm. To make it easier for residents to dispose of their waste and recycling, all sites will open 7 days a week until 31st October.

RECYCLE OLD ELECTRICALS

With 155,000 tonnes of waste electricals being thrown away in the UK, Recycle Your Electricals “HypnoCat”, is on a mission to hypnotise Sheffield residents into recycling their small old electricals.

The campaign has been launched to encourage more people to recycle their electrical waste, as small old electricals are one of the fastest growing waste streams in the UK. Sheffield is one of more than 80 local authorities across the UK to support the campaign.

More good news is that fiery prop Joe Smith has now served his ban & will be available for selection for the next league fixture. Phoenix lost at Hornsea over the weekend, so will be keen to get their campaign back on track when 3rd place Stocksbridge entertain the Rotherham side currently sitting in 2nd place in the league ladder. Steels fall to first defeat under new manager Steels 1-2 Shildon

Ian Richards suffered his first loss as Stocksbridge Park Steels manager after falling 2-1 at home to Shildon. Steels had been in fine form in midweek with a resounding 6-0 win in the Sheffield Senior Cup. The Railwaymen opened the scoring when Alexander White converted after a free kick hit the bar and it fell to his feet. They doubled the lead with a smart finished from substitute Michael Sweet. Stocksbridge made it a tense end for Shildon though after Reece Fielding headed in on the 83rd minute. Shildon started off as the better side as they looked to prove why they are competing at the top of the table this season. After just a minute, Billy Greulich-Smith, who was coming off the back of a hat trick against Stocksbridge’s neighbours Sheffield FC, fizzed a shot wide when a Stocksbridge header landed at his feet. He was alive again not long after when his flick on inside the six-yard box was pushed onto the post by Ed Hall. Shildon were able to take the lead when they were awarded a free kick in a perfect position and while Thexton rattled the cross bar with that effort, White was able to follow it up and give the Railwaymen the lead. The game would settle into a midfield battle for a while with the rain continuing to pour and make life difficult for the players. Despite that, the Steels had the better chances going into the end of the half. Ruthven continued to link up well with Lumsden and sent him through in the box again. The striker managed to hold off some very heavy pressure but Newbrook saved well again. A big moment was when Ross Goodwin was able to advance into the box and was then tripped in the box. The fans screamed for a penalty but the referee disagreed, booking Goodwin for a dive instead. Whitham and Nodder would have efforts that weren’t too

far off after this, but that decision continued to irritate the home fans. Stocksbridge looked to continue the pressure they had at the end of the first half. Nodder teed up a volley for himself which was deflected into the arms of Newbrook while Whitham went on a run before hitting a shot over. Shildon were looking to go get that second though and caused the Stocksbridge defence a lot of issues. Reece Fielding had to make a key challenge to stop Thexton from going clear and then White almost got his second after heading a corner goalwards but Sam Finlaw blocked it on the line. Unfortunately for the Steels, Shildon were able to get that second after catching Stocksbridge on the counter a few times. They fizzed the ball across the box and substitute Sweet hit a powerful shot which left Hall with little chance. Stocksbridge got right back in it though. The initial corner was cleared but it fell to Nathaniel Crofts who whipped it back in for Fielding who rose highest to nod it in and put the Steels right back into this game. The Steels piled on pressure looking for a dramatic equaliser but were unable to get it. There were penalty calls when Crofts went down in the box but it wasn’t given and Stocksbridge fell to their first loss since August. Steels were soon back in action with an away league game at Brighouse on Monday evening where a battling performance saw Steels edged out 2-1. Steels face Widnes at home this Saturday 9 October, 3pm KO at Eco-Power Stadium in the Buildbase FA Trophy 2nd Qual rnd.

had Church on the front foot. The opening goal of the game came in the 17 min. Jordan Coduri turned his defender on the right of goal, his low cross along the 6 yard line was met by Luke Stewart who scored low to the keeper's right against his old club. Two carbon copy headers from Tom Brennan, who powered in with downward headers gave Church a 3-0 lead with just over an hour gone.

Colin Heath did pull a goal back for Knaresborough when he scored with a speculative 30 yard dipping shot in the top left corner of the goal. Full time Knaresborough 1 Church 3 Church looked good going forward and took their chances well. They played very well as a team throughout and we're quicker and better organised than their opposition.

Chapeltown progress in cup with gutsy win Eckington 2-3 RBL - League Cup With the wind behind them Eckington took an early lead after a mistake in defence let the striker through, and despite a good save from Ben Palmer to ball spun in to the goal. Their lead was double with an excellent long range free kick which found the top corner after only 15 minutes.

Legion weathered the storm and pulled one back before half time when Dave Millen nodded down for Joe Moorhouse to slam home. The second half saw RBL with the wind on their side and they levelled when Morgan Cowell slid in Moorhouse for his second. Both sides gave a good account of themselves and

were both going for the win to avoid extra time. The winner came when Millen played a ball over the top which the returning Curtis Dennison raced on to and found the top corner just inside the area. Eckington pushed hard for an equaliser but RBL stood firm and progressed to the last 16.

Tigers trail in semi SHEFFIELD were beaten 50-40 in the home leg of their Premiership Play-Off Semi-Final against rivals Belle Vue on Monday.

A bumper crowd were treated to some close, competitive action throughout - but unfortunately for the hosts, they were on the wrong end of the scoreline.

It means the Tru Plant Tigers have it all to do in Thursday’s decider at the National Speedway Stadium in Manchester.

They were able to record just six race winners and two heat advantages as they were beaten by the Aces at home for the first time this season.

Following last week’s postponement, doubts were again cast over the fixture when heavy rain hit the Steel City throughout the course of Monday daytime. But Track Curator Graham Trollope and his team worked wonders to get the circuit in shape and get the meeting on.

Heat-leader Josh Pickering was one of three Tigers who did manage a race victory - and he is refusing to give up hope ahead of Thursday’s trip to Manchester. “Belle Vue came here and had a good one tonight,” Pickering said.
