OWNERS PUMP IN CASH IN BID TO SAVE STEEL JOBS The owner of Liberty Steel has pledged to restart its plants in Rotherham and Stocksbridge in South Yorkshire this month, saving the “substantial majority” of 1,000 jobs, by pumping £50m in cash into the business, writes The Guardian. The move comes after Sanjeev Gupta’s conglomerate, GFG Alliance, said it had refinanced debts at its Australian steel and mining business. The struggling group is understood to have repaid about a third of total debt of Liberty Primary Metals Australia, which includes a mining and steel business in Whyalla and a coalmine at Tahmoor, using cashflow from its reviving business. The plan is to gradually repay the rest of the debt by June 2023 to key lenders Credit Suisse and the collapsed Greensill Capital. Previously, the debt was expected to be repaid next year.

GFG has been urgently seeking new funds to plug a gap since the collapse of its key lender Greensill Capital in March. GFG faces a Serious Fraud Office investigation into those financing arrangements.
The company said that part of the £50m would also support its Stocksbridge plant, which makes steel components for the aerospace and energy industry. The business is being prepared for a potential sale.
Liberty said the deal in Australia had also freed up £50m in cash that would fund restarting the core electric arc furnace in Rotherham. The 1,000 workers at the two Yorkshire plants are currently on 80% pay, funded by Liberty, after the UK government’s furlough scheme ended after 30 September.
Jeffrey S Stein, the chief restructuring officer for Liberty Steel, said: “The funding we are injecting to Liberty Steel UK puts it in a strong position for business transformation and debt restructuring.”
There have been fears that dramatic rises in the price of energy would prevent Rotherham from reopening this month. However, a source close to the company said additional energy costs were expected to be offset by rising steel prices. The company said it was aiming to produce 50,000 tonnes of steel a month in Rotherham “as soon as possible”.
He said the group’s efforts on global refinancing would now turn to its eastern European operation “where a significant number of new lenders are expressing interest in refinancing our steel assets”. Roy Rickhuss, the general secretary of Community, the steelworkers’ union, said: “This news is well overdue but it’s an important step in the right direction and demonstrates that GFG can raise funds for the UK. Penistone Man jailed for sexual offences show against three victims trailer set on fire A Stocksbridge man has been jailed for 18 years for a series of historic sexual offences involving girls aged under 16 and one woman aged over 16. Martin Tatchell, of Victoria Close, denied all the offences when he appeared at Sheffield Crown Court but was found guilty by a jury. On Monday 4 October, he was sentenced to a total of 18 years in prison. The 60-year-old abused three victims between 1990 and 1997 at his former address. Since his arrest in August 2018, he has continually denied any of the offences had even taken place. In total, Tatchell was found guilty of two charges of indecent assault by penetration on female under 13, a charge of indecent assault by penetration on female over 16 and one charge of rape.
Anger in the community as the Penistone Agricultural Show trailer has been burnt out. This contained show equipment and will cost thousands to replace.
The sentencings for each offence totalled up to 17 years imprisonment plus an extra year added for an offender of particular concern. Tatchell was also placed on the sexual offenders’ register for life and was made subject to an indefinite restraining order protecting two of the victims.
Speaking after the court result Alyshea Sharp, an Investigating Officer with South Yorkshire Police’s Protecting Vulnerable People team, said: “What each of the victims went through at the hands of Tatchell was abhorrent. Meanwhile, he has never once taken responsibility or apologised for his appalling actions. “I salute each victim’s bravery in all speaking up in this instance to bring him to justice, and also potentially protecting others from having to go through the same harrowing experiences. “We hope that, while this court result will never make up for what they went through, the victims will feel some closure that Tatchell will have to spend the best part of two decades behind bars for what he put them through. “If you have also suffered sexual abuse in the past, no matter how long ago it took place, please come forward and report it. We will listen, and we will do all we can to support you and bring offenders to justice.” You can make reports through the National helpline Say Something, or directly to police through 101 or our new online portal.

In 1976 school-leaver Ian Clancy learned his trade at a local doubleglazing company before making the leap two years later of going it alone. A young enthusiastic worker Ian was described as ‘always first on site and last on site’. It wasn’t long before the hard-working Ian bought his first and current premises on Manchester Road in Deepcar, and set up his own window company Deepcar. These premises are now home to a brand new showroom featuring the latest range of products, from tiled roof system conservatories to composite doors. Early success was to follow when in 1983 Ian was named winner of Yorkshire Televisions ‘Young Enterprise - Businessman of the year’ Ian still has the very first door made by Deepcar back in 1978. Still in perfect working order, the door sits proudly at the back of the showroom, illustrating Deepcar’s pride in their humble beginnings. Ian beams “ Our aim is the same today as it was back then - we will provide the best products and best customer service.” He continues “ In today's busy world we pride ourselves in looking after you the customer and will offer the same level of service whether you are having a new conservatory or a lock fixed on your window.

The consultation roadshow will focus on the ten projects outlined in the Towns Fund bid which was approved by the Government in the March budget to go through to the next stage in the bid process.
Sessions will be held at four locations in the town: • Wednesday October 13th, Smithy Moor Community Centre, 4pm-8pm • Saturday October 16th, Fox Valley, 10am2pm • Wednesday October 20th, Stocksbridge Leisure Centre, 4pm-8pm

Teacher completes London Marathon for Paces Jordan Firth completed the 26.2 miles in 4 hours, 16 minutes and 24 seconds cheered on by his family and supporters from the organisation who had travelled to the capital to show their support. The Ecclesfield School teacher has, to date, raised over £2,450 for Paces and their work supporting children, young people and adults from across South Yorkshire and beyond. Jordan said: “Running the London Marathon for Paces was an incredible experience. “I would like to say huge thank you for the amazing support that I have received. I am so happy that our collective efforts will positively impact the lives of children and adults living with Cerebral Palsy and motor disorders.” Ruth Wallbank, community and events fundraiser for Paces - who was in London to support Jordan – said:
A 28-year-old from Sheffield has completed the London Marathon for Paces, the leading specialist centre, charity and school for individuals with Cerebral Palsy and motor disorders.
The Towns Fund Board is made up of stakeholders and business representatives and local volunteers, as well as officers from Sheffield City Council and Deputy Leader Cllr Julie Grocutt, representing both Sheffield City Council and Stocksbridge Town Council. Co-chair of the Towns Fund Board Miriam Cates MP said: “A great deal has been achieved since our ambitious bid for Stocksbridge was approved to go through to this next stage in March this year. We are now looking forward to holding public sessions throughout October with more details about the projects which make up our Town Deal, and preparing the detailed business case so we can start on the important job of delivering this investment and major improvements for our town.”
Work is now underway on the business case for the projects and members of the public will be given the opportunity to find out more and speak to the Towns Fund team at the open sessions throughout October.

POLICE DOG TRACKS DOWN THIEF
Remembering Alex... Happy to chat bench A park bench has been installed in memory of a young mother who sadly passed away one year ago, it is also hoped the bench will help others too.
Police dog tracks down motorhome thief who hid in grounds of Sheffield primary school An alleged motorhome thief who tried to hide on the grounds of a Sheffield primary school was rooted out by a veteran police dog today. South Yorkshire Police’s operational support unit have boasted about the dramatic arrest on Sunday October 10 after the thief reportedly rammed the vehicle into one of their squad cars as he was being tailed. Shortly after, the unnamed man was tracked to a High Green primary school where he was surrounded and forced out of hiding by one of the force’s trained canines, PD Vinny. “Not so tough without your motorhome are you?” bragged SYP Operational Support in a post online.
Alex Jenkins died suddenly in October 2020 from ruptured stomach ulcers. Prior to this, Alex battled with mental illness in various forms, and fought her demons every day for her son Oliver- her world. Unfortunately, Alex hid most of her anxieties, depression and illness from everyone, including friends and family. Friends of Oxley Park, to mark the anniversary of her death and help others with mental issues, have used donations and a £500 grant from the Bridge Shop to make the project possible. The bench was installed by Tom Newman and his team at the Steel Valley Project. Pamela Hibberd from Friends of Oxley Park told Look Local “… the community really have got together to celebrate and to remember Alex.
Alex’s Mum Denise and Sister Kimberley told Look Local “We think the bench is a fantastic idea for the community in relation to mental health. Remembering Alex is easy for us, but to have somewhere for us and others to sit and just stop and think is great. Oliver, her son, is really touched everyone loved his mummy so much. The world moves so quickly around us, we forget about our own mental health and that of others. A bench is a place you can stop, sit and think and even talk- something we feel more of us need to do. We would like to thank Friends of Oxley Park for thinking of Alex and us- we feel honoured that Alex's memory can live on in so many waysespecially in relation to mental health awareness.” It was Alex’s anniversary on the 12th October. Friends of Oxley Park are hoping to install a sculpture trail, where the bench will be the start of the trail.

Railway Supporters of Nature Model Club is on the Recovery Sheffield right track. share ideas for a nature recovery plan Barnsley Model Railway Club are on the move. The local modelling club have been stationary at their Highstone road premises since 1987, having had a previously nomadic existence.
Nature Recovery Sheffield held its first event on 30th September following a declaration of a nature emergency in Sheffield in May by over 1300 people and 30 groups across the city.
The club, having outgrown its Worsborough premises, have now moved into the vacant Wesleyan Chapel on Barnsley Road, Wombwell.
More than 70 people joined the online discussion about how individuals, groups and organisations from Sheffield can work together to restore, enhance and protect local nature and wild spaces.
This new property had been disused for quite a long time and subject to the weather, neglect and vandals. But it has a lot of potential as a new base for the club.
Nature Recovery Sheffield is an alliance of organisations which came together to declare a Nature Emergency for Sheffield and put an action plan in place.
It will give us twice as much space to operate and construct
It will be enjoyed by our existing members and we hope it will draw in new members who could be interested in getting involved. Not many Model Railway Clubs can boast a premises like this. Lots of clubs have to make do with hiring local rooms in pubs or village halls. We hope that Barnsley Model Railway Club will soon be acknowledged as one of the best in the north of England. We meet every Tuesday evening 7pm till late with other days as well on an ad hoc basis.
Small Pub with a Big Heart
The group has now presented their draft recovery plan to those who have signed up to support the initiative. Following an introduction by Liz Ballard of Nature Recovery Sheffield and CEO of Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust, participants were split into groups to discuss the plan, and contribute their suggestions and ideas. “It was really heartening to see so many people from across Sheffield wanting to contribute to the plan and to make a difference,” said Claire Baker of Nature Recovery Sheffield and Owlthorpe Action Group. “From community gardeners, to members of ‘Friends of ’ groups, it was also good to hear about the great things so many people are already doing to help nature and wildlife thrive.”
our layouts due to the open plan layout and will be for more accessible as its all on one floor.
The next step for Nature Recovery Sheffield is to create working groups that focus on different areas of the plan and to get more people across Sheffield involved. “The important thing now is to refine the plan and put it into action - but we need as much help as possible to do that,” said Lindy Stone of Nature Recovery Sheffield and Sheffield Friends of the Earth.
“The working groups will lead key areas of the recovery plan, and we’re asking more and more people to get involved in any way they can - big or small - all contributions will help restore nature and wildlife in Sheffield.”
The Smithy Arms in Oxspring raised an incredible £4100 for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance and Barnsley Hospital Children’s Ward at their Harvest Festival Saturday October 9th.

Slybrarians at Windmill Hill
A North-Sheffield Primary school has recruited a team of ‘Slybrarians’ (sneaky librarians) who are determined to bring a love of reading to chil-
dren in Chapeltown and beyond.
Reception pupils at Windmill Hill Primary, on Ash View in Chapeltown, have
each received a book. The first part of their mission is to take their book home and read it. They are then encouraged to either pass on the book to another

child they know, or take on the role of Slybrarian by slipping the book back into its protective packaging and leaving it somewhere in the community for another child to find and enjoy. Sarah Reynolds, Assistant Head in charge of Reading at Windmill Hill said, “At Windmill we love reading and as teachers we know how key it is that children have positive early experiences to nurture their love of books. We are very proud of our first group of Slybrarians who have been very enthusiastic about the project.”

According to the Literacy Trust, almost 400,000 UK children do not have any book of their own at home.* Windmill Hill see this project as a way of promoting a love of reading and putting books into children’s hands. “We hope that most of the children who read these books will pass them on for others to enjoy, but if they do fall into the hands of a child who has few or even no books at home, we are
happy for them to keep hold of their book for as long as they wish, so they can enjoy reading them again and again.” explained Simon Plant, Head of School at Windmill Hill. ”We want to give some of our youngest pupils the responsibility to help promote reading in this exciting way so they learn about reading, but also about sharing and caring for other people in their community.”

I would like to thank the following people for the time and effort put into such a wonderful Event, Walk and Family Fun day: The 35 walkers from Stocksbridge and Doncaster who managed 23 miles in 6 hours 45 minutes, a fantastic effort by many not used to long walks but ploughed on through squelching blisters and smiling faces. Everyone wants to do it again next year!! The people who sponsored the walkers on line and good old fashioned paper raised £6.3k!!!!

Lies, untruths and porkies Once upon a time not long, long ago in a land not far, far away a man with a funny little moustache made up a story. He made out that all that was wrong in the land was down to bad-uns that didn't belong.
Stubbin shops I think that you should run an article on the absolute distraction the youths of Stocksbridge and Deepcar are causing to the Stubbin area. Where the shop precinct is and the community centre it has become over run by kids/teens, causing damage, littering, fighting, being rude to people - the council and police have been informed on numerous occasions with no resolve or help. The littering is causing and increase in rats and vermin (residents have received letters re: the rat problem) It needs sorting and hopefully a bit of press coverage might give the council the shove that it needs to sort this area out! It’s not fair and intimidating to residents and business owners. The kids have thrown stones at passing buses, thrown bottles at people leaving the shop at night, thrown stones at the flats above the shops and the shops them selves. They have vandalised the community centre on numerous occasions - it’s disgusting. I would like to be kept anonymous for the protection of myself and other residents but please help us all by running a story and maybe the council for comment. Many Thanks
It was porkies and my Grandad's lot took him on.
Steelworks reaction... “The government must play their part and act now to protect our industry from the consequences of soaring energy prices. Other European countries have already acted, and Britain’s steelworkers want to know why our politicians are sitting on their hands. Brexit was supposed to make it easier for the government to back British industry and British jobs but we’re just seeing the same old hand-wringing and excuses for doing nothing.”
can have a bright future - providing good jobs and prosperity with the transition to green steel.
Commenting on an announcement regarding operations and investment at Liberty Steel in South Yorkshire, Mayor of South Yorkshire Dan Jarvis, said:
“Liberty steel workers have been through the grinder during the past couple of years.
“This is a welcome announcement for the steel industry and South Yorkshire, which will get operations up and running at two key sites in our region. “Steel is a strategic sector for the UK economy and with the right support
“That’s why we need industry, government and trade unions to continue working together to safeguard steel’s future, protecting jobs and businesses in the supply chain for the longterm.” Ross Murdoch, GMB National Officer, said:
"This is great news for those in Rotherham - we now need investment to kick start other parts of the wider Liberty Steel business to give a strong reassuring message to workers around the country." “GMB has been in touch GFG Alliance and we need cast iron guarantees this cash will not only allow plants to
reopen - but protect jobs in the long term. “We've said for years UK Steel is at a disadvantage against European steel makers who enjoy much more favourable energy costs. “The current energy crisis has massively exacerbated what has always been a problem area for UK steel makers. “Ultimately the UK steel industry needs protection from artificially subsidised competitors and better Government procurement decisions, or it will continue to lurch from crisis to crisis.” Miriam Cates MP said “It is good news that Liberty Steel has been able to secure additional funds to restart production at its Rotherham facility. This is important for Speciality Steels in Stocksbridge as the majority of raw product used in Stocksbridge
...continued from front page comes initially from Rotherham. This increase in supply will allow Speciality Steels to continue to fulfil orders and provide some security for the business and its employees. Although the intention to sell Speciality Steels was announced earlier this year, limited progress has been made so far. I am hopeful that this new investment will make Stocksbridge a more attractive asset to potential buyers, and I am having regular discussions with management, unions, and the Government to support this process.” With the added stability created by this additional money, the time is now right to move towards a sale of the Speciality Steels business and to provide the Stocksbridge site and its workforce with the investment and security they need to continue producing high value, high quality, specialist steel.”

Tigers end season with play-off defeat Church game SHEFFIELD’S Premiership season is over after a 48-42 defeat at Belle Vue in the second leg of their play-off semi-final.
The Aces progress to the Grand Final, where they will face Peterborough, by a 16-point aggregate margin, although the overall outcome is in no way a reflection of the effort put in by the Tru Plant Tigers at the National Speedway Stadium.

“The damage was done on Monday really, though, and in hindsight would we have been better calling it and running it another day, in more ideal track conditions?
Ultimately the ten-point defeat from Monday’s first leg proved too big a mountain to climb, as the Tigers’ Roses rivals officially secured their aggregate victory in the penultimate race.
“But it is what it is, and we have to take it on the chin. The club has done really well I believe, with a great set of lads, and for our first year in the Premiership there’s plenty to build on.”
Sheffield took the lead on no fewer than four occasions throughout a see-saw second leg, including 4-2s in each of Heats 1, 3 and 5 – all of which were immediately cancelled out by the home side.

BELLE VUE 48: Dan Bewley 15, Richie Worrall 10, Jye Etheridge 9+1, Steve Worrall 7+2, Charles Wright 6, Tom Brennan 1, Brady Kurtz r/r
The match was abandoned after 75 minutes due to an incident which saw Church player Kieran Ryan set upon by one spectator.
Sheffield boss Simon Stead said: “The boys gave it everything, and we’re really disappointed. We were up for it, and we just fell a little bit short. “I felt at any stage if we could have really put a marker down and got consecutive 5-1s, it would have just started to snowball a bit. As it was, we probably ran out of steam a bit after a long track grade after Heat 11.
SHEFFIELD 42: Jack Holder 13, Josh Pickering 7+1, Adam Ellis 7, Connor Mountain 7, Troy Batchelor 4+1, Kyle Howarth 4+1, Danyon Hume 0 Belle Vue win 98-82 on aggregate

On his way to the dressing room Ryan was confronted by a single spectator. Confusion followed as the Penistone players went to the assistance of their friend. The incident was resolved and to Hemsworth’s credit, their officials dealt with the culprit and the disturbance was all over within two minutes but referee Matthew Langdon felt he had to abandon the game. I don’t want to say too much about the incident but Kieran’s done nothing wrong he’s stood his ground. He (the fan) shouldn’t have approached our player in this manner and it’s ended up in carnage. It’s something the league and both clubs need to look at and we’ll see what the aftermath of it all is. It was a disappointing end to a disappointing day

With the Gents summer season competitions completed at Stocksbridge Golf Club, the Winter Cup started in earnest on 9 October. The stableford format runs as a league competition from now until springtime on most Saturdays. The first round was won
convincingly by Lee Hydes (10) with 42 points. Lee had an excellent round including 4 birdies, three of them on the front 9 and his gross score of 70 was several shots below his handicap. Pete Westhead (10) and Phil Smith (27) both scored 39 points, but Pete took second place on countback.

Mosborough Reds 1-3 Chapeltown RBL
Chapeltown were quick out of the blocks and took the lead when Niall Smith crossed and Joe Moorhouse nodded in to the path of Morgan Cowell to fire home.
Mosborough reduced the arrears with a sharp finish in the bottom corner after a well worked move. Legion upped the pace again with Ash Gray and Harley Wilson getting on the ball in midfield, and restored a two goal lead when Jacob Walkland found Adam Todd in space outside the area, who’s shot was only parried and poked home by Morgan Cowell for his second before half time. The second half was competitive with neither side creating much, and Legion being well marshalled by the likes of Sam Beard and Dave Millen at the back to take the 3 points.

downs STEELS OUT OF TROPHY Kenyon Millers Stocksbridge Park Steels 0-2 Widnes
Stocksbridge Park Steels are out of the FA Trophy after losing 2-0 to Widnes. Report by Adam Allcroft The Steels suffered with some bad luck with the first goal after John McGrath’s shot deflected past Hall. But his second was down to skill rather than luck as he ran across the width of the pitch before firing in.
While Stocksbridge started off with a lot of the ball, it was Widnes who struck first. A defensive mix-up gave McGrath the space to have a shot and it deflected off a defender and past Ed Hall. It was a first half of very few chances as both defences stood firm to limit the attacks. However another mix-up at the back from the Steels gave Widnes the chance to double their lead.

Samuel Adetiloye latched onto a poor pass and raced clear to go one-on-one with Hall. However, Hall won the battle and saved the shot to force a corner which came to nothing.
a second. James Steele received a nice pass but his tame shot was right at Hall. McGrath also went for his second after going on a run but his shot eventually went over.
The first real sight of goal for Stocksbridge other than some crosses that weren’t far off being connected with was a free kick, earned after Lewis Whitham was tripped. Luke Mangham stepped up to take it and hit the shot under the wall but it ended up being right at Owen Wheeler in the Widnes net.
Steels were having a lot of the ball and tried to make the most of it but a creditable Widnes defence made sure to keep them out. But it doesn’t matter how much of the ball you have, if you don’t put it in the back of the net you will be punished. And that’s what happened. McGrath got hold of the ball and run across the pitch before finishing across his body and the ball finding the bottom of the corner.
Both sides had good chances before the half ended. Widnes captain Michael Burke would have cursed not getting a goal when he had a free header from a corner that he put over. At the other end, Whitham went on a good run, hit a good crossfield pass to Nathaniel Crofts whose fizzing shot ended up being right at Wheeler. Not long after, a defensive header bounced out to Sam Finlaw whose powerful shot made Wheeler work for his save. Despite a decent flurry at the end for the Steels, they’d go into half time behind.
Stocksbridge did push to see if they could get something back before the end of the game. But efforts from Luke Mangham and Josh Nodder were off target and the Steels will have to wait another year for any success in the Trophy. Kenyon grabbed a 4th mid-way through the 2nd half but Rotherham hit back late on to make it 4-4. One last push in injury time saw the long serving Abby Towns bundling the ball home from a corner to settle it in front of a bumper crowd. And with no less than five under 18s playing their part the future looks bright down at the Bridge.

A close game looked unlikely as Millie Kenyon scored a hat-trick for the hosts in the first 15 minutes but The Millers hit back to level it up at 3-3 by half time.
