Railway Gets Budget Boost The campaign to restore passenger trains between Stocksbridge and Sheffield has taken a big step forward, with the Chancellor announcing initial funding for the project in his Budget and Spending Review. This is the successful result of a bid put forward to the Government by local MP Miram Cates and South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority. The proposal was submitted earlier this year and aims to bring passenger services back to the existing freight line that runs between central Sheffield and Stocksbridge. It includes plans for intermediate stations at Deepcar, Oughtibridge, Wadsley Bridge, and Neepsend, as well as the possibility of onwards connections to Rotherham, Worksop, and Chesterfield. Commenting on the announcement, Miriam Cates MP said: "This is fantastic news for Stocksbridge and the entire Upper Don Valley. Improving transport connectivity is the key to unlocking opportunities for local people and businesses, and our towns and villages have been cut off for far too long. The route into Sheffield is one of the most congested in the city, so we desperately need this sort of investment in alternative public transport. "Making use of the existing freight railway to run passenger trains could cut the journey time between Stocksbridge and central Sheffield to just 15 minutes. This would help connect local people to jobs, education, public services, and social events in Sheffield and beyond.
"This project enjoys huge support from the local community, and I would like to thank the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority, Sheffield City Council, and the Don Valley Railway group for their work over recent months and years. Restoring this key rail link is a fantastic opportunity for Stocksbridge and the Upper Don Valley, and builds on the transformative £25million of Government investment through the Stocksbridge Town Deal." There are a number of important processes to go through before trains can begin to operate, including engineering and environmental surveys. Only once these processes have been completed and the planning applications approved will additional money be unlocked to carry out the necessary work on upgrading the existing railway. Don Valley Railway, are absolutely delighted to hear the good news that funding has been allocated by the Government to develop a Strategic Outline Business Case to bring passenger trains to Stocksbridge. Chris Bell, head campaigner for Don Valley Railway, told Look Local “We have campaigned since 2004 to get the line used for passenger services, and the news that a full study is being progressed is the culmination of efforts by all its members and supporters.

Govt. failing GP practices - BMA The ‘Perfect storm’ of fewer GPs, rising workload, and increasing patient harm: The British Medical Association is to hold indicative ballot of GP practices in response to Government’s failure to work together on a rescue package The BMA is to hold an indicative ballot of GP practices in England. The indicative ballot follows deep concerns expressed by GPs over patient safety linked to persistently falling numbers of GPs, unsustainable workload, and because of the rising levels of abuse of staff – none of which are helped and all of which are being worsened by the measures, or ‘access package,’ recently announced by the government. This indicative ballot is asking England’s GP Practices whether they would be willing to take action in four key areas. These actions are intended to protect patient safety, not impact on patient care and will centre on practices refusing to comply with the bureaucratic and timewasting parts of their contract that takes them away from looking after their patients. The actions include:
• To disrupt appointment data collection which may be used for “Naming and Shaming” GP practices, • to not fulfil the contractual requirement to provide COVID vaccination exemption certifications to patients who request it, • disengaging from the Primary Care Network (PCN) Direct Enhanced Service (DES) either outside of the opt-out period or during the next opt-out period, and • not complying with the requirement from NHS England to submit GP earnings data. The Chair of the BMA GP Committee, Dr Richard Vautrey said: “GP numbers are falling, and the total number of patients continues to rise. The workload, even without addressing the backlog, is now more than we can realistically and safely manage. Patient care is suffering as a result. It’s important to stress that these actions are not directed at patients, nor the care they receive, but absolutely at the Government and NHS England, and in the interests of patient safety, they must act now to stop the abuse, reverse the unsustainable workload and address the burnout felt by so many GPs and their teams.
“When you add to that the levels of bureaucracy we are expected to cope with, the time has come to say we cannot go on like this anymore. Yet the Government and NHS England’s plan to solve this and support practices through the winter will make matters a lot worse. “The Government's plan has simply added fuel to the fire in creating further bureaucracy and punitive measures for practices and demoralised the whole workforce. Doctors want to use their time to look after their patients, not to meet artificial targets and do even more paperwork. “Despite all attempts to work on a solution focused package backed by the profession, and to put in place a plan that really would improve access, quality of care, free up time by reducing bureaucratic workload and enable practices to properly care for their patients over this expected difficult winter, DHSC’s recent comments have only add to the anger and desperation felt by the general practice workforce across England.” The results of this indicative ballot will be known by next month.
DEEP CONCERNS: Dr Richard Vautrey, BMA Chair.

Residents have their say on Town Deal Hundreds of people have taken up the opportunity to have their say and find out more about the Town Deal projects for Stocksbridge in a consultation roadshow which has taken place over the last few weeks, claim organisers.
Residents turned out in good numbers with between 350-400 people attending across four sessions which were held in October at venues across the town. The drop in consultation roadshow event visited Fox Valley, Stocksbridge Community Leisure Centre, Smithy Moor Community Centre, and Stocksbridge Library – sharing plans, visuals, and information about the fund. The Towns Fund team have also attended a range of local community group meetings and sessions in recent weeks to update residents on the projects and the next steps in the £24.1 million investment for this part of North Sheffield. Feedback received at the sessions will now inform the next stage of the process which is to develop and submit the business cases for the Town Deal projects. The projects are aimed at transforming the fortunes of Stocksbridge and helping to build a sustainable future for residents and businesses as well as building on the town’s location at the gateway to the countryside. Projects include:
PREMIER EYECARE OPTOMETRISTS & CONTACT LENS PRACTITIONERS
Celebrating our 17th year of service
• The redevelopment of part of Manchester Road in the town centre including a new library and community facilities • Public realm improvements to the town centre including a town square as well as better links to other parts of the town and a new community bus network
• Investment in sports, leisure and wellbeing such as an all-weather pitch, upgraded skatepark and a new multisport pavilion • A post 16 hub and adult education provision at Stocksbridge High School • Improvements to walking and cycle trails as well as the Little Don River The key issues facing the town were highlighted in the first phase of local consultation in October 2020, including the need to improve local facilities, job opportunities and connectivity as well as the regeneration of the Manchester Road area. Co-chair of the Towns Fund Board Miriam Cates MP said: “It has been great for the board to have the opportunity to speak to people in Stocksbridge about the Towns Fund projects and what their priorities and aspirations are for their community. I was really pleased to see the level of interest and enthusiasm in the town for this fantastic investment for Stocksbridge.” Deputy leader of Sheffield City Council and Towns Fund Board member Cllr Julie Grocutt said: “I’d like to thank everyone who came to our consultation sessions and gave their thoughts and ideas about the Towns Fund projects. “This is a really exciting time for Stocksbridge and we’re looking forward to continuing our work with local residents and stakeholders as the plans for the town progress to the next stage.” The consultation findings will be reported to the Towns Fund Board and shared on the Stocksbridge Towns Fund website www. welcometostocksbridge.co.uk

Smart motorway deaths: Coffins protest takes place Protesters have carried cardboard coffins to the Department for Transport's headquarters to demand the scrapping of smart motorways, writes the BBC. The London protest was organised by Claire Mercer, widow of Jason Mercer, who was killed on the M1 near Sheffield in 2019 when he was struck by a lorry. She said the 38 coffins represented the official number of those killed on smart motorways between 2014 and 2019. The government said a new "raft of measures" would improve road safety. About 50 demonstrators marched from the London Eye to Horseferry Road to demand a ban on all-lane running (ALR) motorways, which can convert the hard shoulder into a live traffic lane. There have been mounting concerns about such motorways after several fatal accidents involving stationary vehicles being hit from behind. Mrs Mercer has campaigned against the use of smart motorways since Mr Mercer died alongside Alexandru Murgeanu, 22, on a stretch of the M1 without a hard shoulder.
"We don't need a raft of changes. We just need the hard shoulder back in every single instance." Janet Savage said she joined the demonstration after her experience when her car had a flat tyre on a smart motorway several months ago. "We couldn't get off anywhere and it was the most terrifying thing in my life," she said. "I don't ever want to get on one again, ever." National Highways, the government-owned company responsible for England's motorways and major A roads, said the chance of death on smart motorways was less than on any other major road. Nick Harris, its chief executive, said: "Safety remains our top priority and our motorways are the safest type of road in the country. "We are determined to do all we can to help drivers feel safe and be safer on all our roads." The Commons Transport Select Committee is due to publish a report on Tuesday on the rollout and safety of smart motorways.
"[The government] keep doing review after review after review - in the meantime, people are still dying," she said.

Sheffield crowned UK’s most ‘greenest’ city Researchers have ranked the UK’s 25 biggest cities by population for sustainability - and Sheffield has topped the list.
Speaking about Sheffield gaining the title of UK’s most environmentally friendly city, Labour Council Leader Terry Fox said:
In determining this a wide range of factors were looked at including protection of green space, car and energy use, waste and recycling and air quality data in the comprehensive study.
“I’m delighted, but not surprised, that Sheffield has been come out on top spot of the Green City report.

Sewage reply
not by Government but by private Corporate children or if you are concerned about someone’s interests. condition
It is refreshing to see a Conservative MP concede in writing [Letters 28 October 2021] that over three decades after the privatisation of water and sewage utilities in England and Wales the privatisation model has failed to the extent of there being only two options for dealing with storm surges: pumping sewage into rivers or pumping it 'onto the streets.'
Under such circumstances , where the only choice on offer is three variations of the same product, it seems more than reasonable to anticipate that at the next General Election the number not voting will exceed the 18 million (40% of eligible voters) 'achieved' at the 2001 election.”
Instead of driving innovation and efficiencies the privatisation model has resulted in investment decisions which focus on maximising what is in effect rentier based surplus extraction rather than productive profit. Externalising both costs and risks to the rest of society which has produced a situation where the only choice during what are regular bouts of wet weather on these islands is to pump sewage into rivers or 'onto the streets.'
Which is hardly surprising given the scale and depth of institutional capture of too many political parties and politicians by corporate lobbyists at Westminster. Whether its All Party Parliamentary Groups, such as Water or Unconventional oil and gas, receiving 'donations' from interested parties to influence decision making; sponsorship to ensure lucrative public contracts are given to those with no expertise to deliver; or the 'you scratch my back and I'll scratch your's' revolving door in which jobs are offered one fact is abundantly clear. The tail is wagging the dog. When a Government MP concedes and argues that the only choice on offer after thirty odd years of a failed privatisation model is sewage in the rivers or 'on the streets' its clear that the key policy decisions are being made

Climate change
I am amazed when I hear of supposedly ethical and intelligent local people, including some with If someone’s got something in their eye: responsible teaching positions in the churches, • Tell them not to rub it, so they don’t make it worse who fly off to distant places for a week on holiday. Do they not believe the climate scientists? Maybe or cause more damage they think God will intervene and change the laws • Pour clean water over their eye to wash out what’s of science. I’m baffled. I’d be grateful if someone Dave Hansell in there and/or to cool the burn could explain this to me.
Yet, even discounting storm surges, the performance of many of our privatised water companies in discharging sewage into rivers is also poor. With regular cases of fines being imposed Remember, remember first aid for practices such as 'flow clipping' - a technique in November to manipulate sewage effluent flows through the sewage treatment process. Sewage reply I am astonished to learn from Ms Cates MP explanation in your letters page of 28th Oct 2021 that water treatment companies are allowed to “... pump sewage onto the streets and into peoples homes”.

Sewage pollution - reply Have I got the wrong end of the stick? Do I smell something? Having given-up facebook because of all the lies and untruths making me so angry I hesitate to continue here, but at such a crucial time for the climate and natural environment, when politicians from around the world are meeting to decide the fate of the planet I have to go on. Our local MP has agreed to allow sewage to be discharged into the river Don, and presumably any river in the country because, forgive me if I am wrong, if there is a storm, our new sewagae plant will not cope. What would the public want, she asks, as an alternative, to have it discharged onto our streets? Well, on the face of it, no, probably not. But thinking for a moment I would say YES! Discharge it onto our streets and gardens too please. Rather than pollute our recovering rivers, recovering from the last 200 years of the industrial revolution which many other countries are now imitating trying to catch up with us. Make us face up to the truth for once. How can I say this? Well, as an engineer and I didn’t fully understand mechanics at college, one thing I did and do understand is that when designing something, we factor in a safety margin. In other words we make say a beam in a house strong enough to withstand six or more times the likely maximum load it may take. In a world where designed obsolescence is taken for granted and where good engineering, as in German made BMWs are two ends of the spectrum we have the so called free un- regulated market. An obsession of right wing politics to privatise everything and keep hands off! Regulation is a dirty word for big business. This mess we are in of which the sewage issue is a pertinent example, seems to be the results of such stupidity and right wing ideology.
I am sure she did not mean to mislead intentionally and she should have rather used a more comprehensive explanation to say “If during heavy rain if water companies could not process the sewage then the sewage processing system would simply back up from the sewage works which could mean sewage drain covers in the streets would overflow followed by the sewage drains in our gardens then ultimately if may overflow in our So yes, please pollute our streets and human houses” environment, as we do already to the air that we I believe current design standards for treatment breath and the earth that we poison. This way the works require them to cater for normal heavy rain public, ie you and me may wake up to the reality that occurs during a 10 or 50 or 100 year period and truth. Our nice houses and cars will get dirty and have contingency plans when a 1 in 100 year and smelly and we may start to empathise with (plus climate change) torrential rainfall occurs. I the plight of millions of people around the world would suggest when people pass by Stocksbridge who are sufferrring and dieing because of the 2 (Ewden Water Treatment Works - Wharncliffe mess we are creating here in the wealthy nations. Side) they look at the empty big blue tanks and ask Even if im wrong on this issue (and I apologise themselves why Yorkshire Water installed them if in advance) it remains a good metaphor for our arrogance, ignorance and greed. Please, please stop not to cater for Heavy Rain. punishing the planet, making it a scapegoat for Fines for discharges of untreated sewage into human incompetence and selfish blind ignorance the water courses and the sea will mean water and lazyness. Humans are nature. If im right companies will spend money on implement these then somebody needs to be held accountable for changes rather than pay fines and have bad PR. designing modern sewage plant that cannot cope with a storm, of which it doesn’t take a genius Ms Cates quoting the £150 billion is perhaps to predict that there will be the normal number quoting the potential cost if we were to design of them and very likely many more serious and and build systems to cater for the 1-100 years disruptive ones in the future whether we believe event which is neither practical or realistic since in climate change of not. Put the shxt where it during this event of Torrential Rain and flooding belongs, or use it for fertiliser, or is it so full of the amount of surface water would vastly dilute chemicals that it isnt fit? Something has gone any untreated sewage that was discharged into the drastically wrong with our way of life, and our water courses. children are the ones who picking up the bill in If MS Cates thinks this legislation is not correct so many ways. Stop making excuses and making rather than vote it down she should vote for it the planet suffer as a consequence of our policies. at the same time as introduce an amendment to Admit that you are wrong for once. 5 reasons to be cheerful this Winter Winter can make life harder, but it is also a season to savour.
4. Snuggling up with a hot drink and a good film or book
1.Winter is beautiful
Snuggling under a blanket with a mug of something warm and something to watch or read is a comforting thing to do at any time of year. And in the cold winter months, keeping warm also has the added benefit of helping to stave off those winter bugs. We’re sold!
Frosty mornings, the fresh air, sparkling cobwebs, the long shadows as the sun dips… there are so many beautiful things about Winter. Getting out for a walk and enjoying your surroundings is a great way to keep both body and mind healthy. But for some people, getting out of the house isn’t an option. Our customers often tell us that if the weather is bad, it’s difficult to get around. If that’s the case, take a moment each day to enjoy what you can see out of the window or in your garden. Pick up a pen and draw something or write a poem about what makes Winter beautiful. 2.Birds flock to our gardens Our gardens, balconies and windowsills are perfect for attracting wildlife in search of scarce Winter food. Put out sunflower seeds, peanuts or fat balls, and don’t forget to provide some water for them too. 3.The festive season Sending cards or letters to those you love, watching Christmas films, spending time with family and friends, or simply wishing someone a ‘Merry Christmas’ in the street – it all gives you a sense of warmth and hope during the Winter. And if restrictions stay as they are, we will be able to gather on Christmas Day. One of our customers said: “My daughter and grandchildren don’t live far away. We’ll definitely get together for Christmas. I can’t wait.”
5.Without Winter there would be no Spring One of the best things about the British seasons is that as one departs, another arrives. Just think about how much we appreciate those early daffodils that appear as the weather changes in the Spring, the birth of new lambs, the longer, sunnier days. It always comes with a feeling that after the Winter, we’ve all earned it! If you’re concerned about staying warm and well this Winter, Age UK (0800 169 65 65) has a useful guide called ‘Winter Wrapped Up’. If you need a printout of it, please call us and we’d be happy to help. At AHM Installations we prioritise quality of life over everything. We enjoy helping people, which includes listening to the challenges our customers face at home. One of the customers we spoke to about their concerns for this Winter has disabilities. We’re delighted that he can now enjoy a nice warm shower on a cold winter’s day because he feels so much safer with his new shower cubicle, grab bars and seat, which we recently installed. Call our family-run team on 0114 358 2320. AHM Installations install safe, affordable, stylish bathrooms for anyone with limited mobility.
Why Jill wants everybody to support the Festival of Light JILL Poulton knows that the best Christmas gift anybody could give would be a donation to the St Luke’s Hospice Festival of Light. Jill’s mum Sheila Wright was a patient on the hospice’s In Patient Centre at Christmas 2017 and for the Jill and the rest of the family, the level of support they received helped them all through a very difficult time. Sheila was suffering from both Alzheimer’s Disease and the final stages of cancer when she was transferred to St Luke’s just days after the death of Kenneth, her husband of almost 60 years. “Immediately we knew that mum was in the best place and we let out a sigh of relief because we knew she was going to get the best care she could possibly have,” says Jill, who lives in High Green. Sheila died at St Luke’s on Christmas Day 2017 and Jill says: “I honestly cannot thank St Luke’s enough for all the
support and help we received - the care mum received was second to none.
Common Lane garden, all dedicated in memory of loved ones.
“There were just eight days between my dad dying and then losing my mum and being at St Luke’s made a horrible time that much better.
Last year’s switch on had to be cancelled as the country went into winter lockdown, though supporters did have the opportunity to at least enjoy the moment with a special online ceremony.
“It meant that we could be confident that the treatment our mum was getting was absolutely fantastic and that made it all so much easier for us. “The people who work at St Luke’s are absolutely selfless and we can look back and know with complete certainly that my mum had the best care ever and that took a burden off our shoulders because we knew this was where she needed to be.” That’s why Jill is now encouraging other people to join her in supporting the 2021 St Luke’s Festival of Light 2021, the annual celebration that sees thousands of lights illuminate the charity’s Little
Organisers are confident, however, that this year’s event will be able to go ahead on the evening of Sunday December 5, hosted by BBC Radio Sheffield presenter and keen St Luke’s supporter Paulette Edwards. “St Luke’s made our whole experience as good as it possibly could be,” says Jill. “That’s why everybody needs to support the Festival of Light because some time in the future it might be your family that needs the support we received.” To find out more about the 2021 Festival of Light 2021 and how to support the event by making a donation simply visit www.stlukeshospice.org.uk/light

Penistone runner Phil Montgomery claimed his first race win at the Go Big Moor fell race which took place on the moors outside of Sheffield. The thirteen mile route was run in wet and muddy conditions. Phil was a convincing winner with a winning margin of nearly ten minutes! Phil’s winning time was 1-34-28. Harriet Drouin also completed the event finishing in 2-30-22. A few Penistone runners competed in the Worksop half marathon. First back in 38th place was Jonathan Phillips in 1-27-02 which was a new pb by 9 minutes. The first lady back for Penistone was Suzanne McGill in 1-4543. As always Penistone runners were particularly active at parkruns across the region and beyond. James Fryers kept up his good form placing first at the Cusworth parkrun in 19-13. Dave Needham achieved the milestone of 300 parkruns when he completed the Concord parkrun. Peter Beever notched up 50 parkruns after completing the Endcliffe parkrun. Penistone hosted the second round of the South Yorkshire Cross Country league on a wet and windy Sunday morning though the sun did come out for the senior men’s and ladies races which were ran in the early afternoon.

Church thrash leaders A report by Martin Webb
A beautiful afternoon with blue skies and cotton wool clouds set the scene for this NCEL Premier meeting. Church had the better of the early exchanges, but were unable to create a clear opening. Grimsby showed they could create space with some good passing. The first shot of the match came after 10 minutes from a Jordan Coduri run but it went two yards wide. Church were controlling the ball well and in the 19th minute a Danny Howes shot struck the arm of a defender. The referee awarded a penalty and James Young blasted the ball to the left of the keeper, who had gone the wrong way. Immediately from the restart Church had a flurry of chances, a beautiful cross from the left was met in the middle of goal by Luke Stewart, whose header just went over the bar. A James Young rocket free kick was then just tipped over the bar. Jordan Coduri tackled well in the midfield and took the ball in on goal. His scuffed shot was just saved by the Grimsby keeper. Church continued to create chances, with Luke Stewart having two shots blocked.
Penistone Church FC 4-1 Grimsby Borough
After 32 minutes Grimsby were reduced to 10 men for a second bookable offence. It only took seven minutes for Church to make their numerical advantage count when Bradley Kemp burst through from the right and at full pace was tackled. The referee awarded a second penalty. Grimsby were reduced to 9 men for a sin bin offence. James Young stepped up again and buried the penalty low to the right of goal. Reece High took a neat pass inside from Bradley Kemp. He held the ball, turned the defenders and took his chance, second time from the edge of the box. The ball scudded low across the goal to find the left hand corner of the goal. After spell of excellent one-touch football from Grimsby opened up the Church midfield. Adam Drury received the ball at full pace and finished low to the keeper's left from the edge of the box. Three minutes from time Church put the game beyond any doubt, a free kick from the right hand touchline was met by Brett Lovell with a crisp header. The ball flashed back across goal into the net from 10 yards.
the 5 additional minutes. Reece High could on another day have had a hat trick, but was denied by two fantastic point blank saves.

We started on the front foot we didn’t give them a minute on the ball. We spoke about not letting them have time to play with the ball, we know that they can play and they’ve got key players who can cut you open so we tried to nullify that and I thought we did it superbly.”

Comeback win Water Tower 1-4 Chapeltown RBL

James win Club Doubles After a long summer season, the Stocksbridge Golf Club Vic Wilson Doubles knockout competition has been won by Joe Sedgwick and James Mace. It was a final with three Sedgwick members playing in the match, with Matt and his Dad Ian, the opponents of Joe and James. So, at least Sedgwick success was guaranteed from either team. It was a highly competitive match that went to the final hole in the match-play, better-ball format. After 17 holes the game was all square and with approach shots to the 18th, in fading light, were vital. It was Joe who chipped to 2 inches to clinch the victory for himself and James, before hand-shakes all round. The Dragons Summer Cup concluded with the final round of the season long competition on 20 October. Noel Weaver (16), not only won the final round with 38 points, he also won the overall competition. Les Wright (14) also scored 38 points, but lost out to Noel on count-
back. Charlie Dale (25) was third with 37 points. Ian Batty (16) and Mick Siddall (17), who were both in contention for the Cup, finished 4th and 5th respectively with 35 points. To score points for the overall summer competition players weekly stableford points over 30 are counted. Noel's overall aggregate score for the Summer Cup was 56 points, with an average of 4.7 per round. Mick Siddall finished second with a score of 53 points with an average of 5.3 per round. Ian Batty finished third, also with 53 points, but a slightly lower average of 3.8 per round. Les Wright was fourth with 49 points and an average of 4.1 per round. Doug Needham finished fifth with 45 points at an average of 5.0 per round. Well over 50 Dragons competed in at least one round of the competition.
The Gents Section competed for the third round of the Club Winter Cup on 23
October. Overnight rain had made the course a little softer and strong westerly winds made playing conditions tricky. Phil Beaumont (24) won the round convincingly with 39 points. Eddie Smith (22) was second with 36 points, the same score as several other players, but with a better back nine total. Steven Haigh (14), Mick Bellamy (21) and Danny Costello (1) were the other players to lose out to Eddie on countback. Danny's gross score for the round was a 1 over par 67, a round that included 16 pars, 1 birdie and just one double bogie on the 16th. Assistant Professionals Liana O'Sullivan and Joe Sedwick sponsored the Mid-week Stableford that was won by Dave Buxton (10) with 39 points. Ashley Jowitt (17) was second with 38 points and Nick Broomhead (15) third with 37 points. Richard Walker (23) also scored 37 points but lost out to Nick on countback.
Chapeltown Legion made it 4 wins on the bounce after coming from 1-0 down at Water Tower. Water Tower lead at half time after an even half. Denham Saxton equalised just after half time lifting the ball over the goalkeeper after a ball by Dave Millen, and doubled his and Legions tally shortly after when Niall Smith stood the ball up for Saxton to volley his team ahead. Legion extended the lead when Adam Todd was fouled 30 yards out and got up to score the resulting free kick, scoring his 3rd goal in as many games. Ben Palmer had to be at his best to produce an outstanding one handed save to keep it at 3-1, and the final nail in Water Towers coffin came when Niall Smith was picked out by Harley Wilson, racing through to find the bottom corner. The visitors struggled to get out of their own half, with the blue line resolute in defence. Despite attacking for most of the half, it took Stocksbridge until just before half time to open the scoring when forwards and backs combined to send full back Dan Burt scampering over the line, with Spencer adding the conversion to take the half time score to Stocksbridge Rugby 7pts – Hornsea nil. The 2nd stanza followed a similar pattern with Stocksbridge seemingly unaware of their visitors lofty status, a quick tap penalty by that man Adam Rothwell Frith found a gap in the Hornsea defence, and the forwards rumbled close to the line, where the hard working back rower Ricky Rowett was able to plunge over from close range, with Spencer again adding the conversion. the home side roared back at their visitors and Rowett was on hand to complete his brace of tries from another quick tapped penalty, this time just too far out for Spencer to convert. The final whistle blew with Stocksbridge gaining a fully merited victory. ‘this performance has been brewing now for a few weeks’ said Director of Rugby Andy Tyers afterwards, adding ‘the boys have been training well and are improving every week, and this is reward for their efforts. It’s also a benchmark for future expectations’. This victory move Stocksbridge up one place in the league ladder to 5th, and with a free week this week, they will be able to prepare for a tricky away fixture at Mosborough Rugby on 13th November, kick off 2.15pm.
