Wind and rain disrupts golf

The recent wind and rains have disrupted the winter golfing season at Stocksbridge Golf Club. Golfers at the club are a hardy bunch but when the storms of the last week of January hit, it made the playing conditions at 1000 feet above sea level course very tricky.

Yet there were still some that braved the difficult conditions to play in the latest round of the Club Winter Cup on 29 January. Phil Beaumont (21) added to his lead in the overall competition, winning this leg with 33 points. Eric Wilkinson (9), Malcolm Ingles (18) and Rob Betts (11) all came in with the same score as Phil, but finished 2nd, 3rd and 4th respectively on countback.

The next day the winds had settled a little and more golfers took part in the Pro's Sunday Stableford. Nasser Hassan (19) scored and excellent 39 points, playing very steady and consistent golf for the round. Trevor Mosely (9), Brian Dobb and Alec Cowling (18) all finished one point behind, but lost out on countback.

The Dragons Section has completed two rounds of its Winter Cup Competition over the last couple of weeks. On 26 January Tony Peers (22) from Division 2, won with an impressive 41 points. Dave Stringer (15), from Division 1, was a close second with 40 points, well clear of Doug Needham (21), Mick Mosforth (26) and Peter Dickinson (23) who all finished with 36 points.

A week later Bob Haythorne (17) from Division 1, won with 38 points. Dave Broadhurst (19) was second with 35 points, followed by Mick Siddall (18) on 34 points. Doug Needham (21), Steven Haigh (14) and Stuart Roebuck (23) all finished with 34 points as well, but lost out to Mick on countback.

As part of the Club's annual presentation for competition winners, a special mention must go to Liana O'Sullivan, who retained her Ladies Champions Bowl for 2021. Liana is pictured with Helen Moffett and Alan Revill, the Club's Lady and Gents Captains.
