LIBERTY STEEL: THOUSANDS OF JOBS SAVED AS WINDING UP ORDERS RETRACTED
STEEL SAVED HMRC has withdrawn petitions to close down four Liberty Steel companies, giving breathing space to the GFG Alliance metals empire presided over by Sanjeev Gupta. The UK winding-up petitions, revealed last month, threatened the jobs of 3,000 workers across five plants, mostly in the north of England, including relatively large plants that make speciality steel in Rotherham and Stocksbridge. Miriam Cates MP posted “The news of an agreement between Liberty Steel and HMRC will be a relief to the entire Stocksbridge community, and especially the employees of Speciality Steels and their families.
We all want to see this nationally important site producing world-class steel and providing secure employment for its workers. And whilst this period of uncertainty is not over, this is an important step forward towards a more secure future for the company.
I'm continuing to work locally and in Parliament to make the case for the strategic importance of Stocksbridge steel. Recent events have made ever clearer our need to have our own domestic suppliers of critical products such as steel. Charlotte Childs, GMB Union National Officer, said: “Thousands of jobs will be saved in the short term, but
we are far from out of the woods. GMB will now be seeking to continue constructive dialogue with GFG Alliance to ensure the impact of the financial restructuring and transformation package is felt in the right places.” As well as the financial problems, GFG has a threat of criminal investigations from the UK’s Serious Fraud Office and French prosecutors hanging over it. In a written statement, Gupta said: “With refinancing initiatives well under way and our businesses performing well, this will be a formative year for our organisation as we work through our transformation plan.

Swim for Jude 8000 High Green’s Angram Bank student Leah Walton aged 9 volunteered to do a 1 mile swim on the 24th April at Thorncliffe Leisure Centre to raise money to help little Jude Mellon-Jameson’s cancer treatment. Leah is working hard to build up stamina for the big day after only receiving her 100 metre badge and certificate last month. Jude the son of former Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper, Arron Jameson and his wife Lucy is a 3 year old boy and has neuroblastoma. His parents, family, friends and even strangers are desperately trying to access treatment in America to try to increase his chances of long term survival. The fundraising is being done through registered charity Solving Kids' Cancer. If you can help Leah as well as other volunteers raise money to this fantastic push for this young man’s survival. A mix of species including oak, rowan and silver birch were planted in areas where conifers were removed in 2019, increasing the proportion of wildlife-friendly native wood land on the reserve. In 1976 school-leaver Ian Clancy learned his trade at a local doubleglazing company before making the leap two years later of going it alone. A young enthusiastic worker Ian was described as ‘always first on site and last on site’. It wasn’t long before the hard-working Ian bought his first and current premises on Manchester Road in Deepcar, and set up his own window company Deepcar. These premises are now home to a brand new showroom featuring the latest range of products, from tiled roof system conservatories to composite doors. Early success was to follow when in 1983 Ian was named winner of Yorkshire Televisions ‘Young Enterprise - Businessman of the year’ Ian still has the very first door made by Deepcar back in 1978. Still in perfect working order, the door sits proudly at the back of the showroom, illustrating Deepcar’s pride in their humble beginnings. Ian beams “ Our aim is the same today as it was back then - we will provide the best products and best customer service.” He continues “ In today's busy world we pride ourselves in looking after you the customer and will offer the same level of service whether you are having a new conservatory or a lock fixed on your window.

STRONG BID FOR CHAPEL REJECTED Stannington campaign group, Action for Knowle Top, has had its plans to acquire the former Knowle Top Chapel and Schoolroom for community use, dashed.
Nicola Parris, Joint Chair commented “The estate agent has informed us that one bid of 'unbelievable' value stood apart from the other half dozen. It is this bid which the vendor has now instructed the agent to pursue. Our campaign has been a magnificent example of a community coming together around a worthwhile and valuable project. We are so proud, both of the work our small campaign group achieved and of the community response in raising such a remark-
We were advised, professionally, that this was a strong bid and in other circumstances may well have been successful. This was the highest responsible bid possible, that the community business would have been able to afford without going bust within the first couple of years”. Shareholders and bondholders have been informed and thanked for their support. AKT intend to hold a shareholder's meeting in the near future to keep them fully informed, answer questions and take stock of the situation.
Labour councillors claim to have secured new funds for neighbourhoods and renewable energy – but green councillors failed to vote for the budget.
Labour and Green councillors voting for it. This would have secured around £7.5 million investment into neighbourhoods and renewable energy.
In May 2022 Labour and Green councillors agreed to a co-operation agreement to ensure a stable council administration. It was agreed that party politics would be put aside in the interests of the city and a number of commitments were made as part of this agreement, including delivering a balanced budget.
However, the main budget was then put to the vote and this was rejected – as Green councillors voted against it.
A balanced budget proposal was agreed by the Labour-Green Co-Operative Exec on 16th February. However, the Green Party wanted an amendment to the budget which would see a multimillion pound investment into public transport and provisions for cycling and walking. Douglas Johnson, Green Party told Look Local “This year we voted to support Labour's amendment to their own budget because it contained investment in large-scale community renewable power and other things we have supported. Sadly, they and the LibDems voted against our amendment so it hasn't been included in the overall budget.” What happened? In, what Labour describes as a farcical town hall meeting – Labour’s budget amendment initially won the backing of a majority, with

This agreement meant a Co-Operative Executive was formed, being politically proportionate with seven Labour members and three Green.

Several weeks ago on a first team away day several cars and car boots were crammed full of kit, balls, cameras and players which is not out of the ordinary for 90% of non-league football clubs. Then over the following week saw us visit grounds and have teams visit us in Penistone where their own minibus was in use. This triggered first team manager (sadly unavailable for the photo) Stephen Lenthall to literally ‘get the wheels in motion’. Many texts & phone calls later and maybe a Saturday evening beer or two has now meant that two of the clubs top sponsors have stepped in and provided the club with our very own Penistone Church FC minibus. We can’t thank enough the generosity of Andy and Dean Foulkes of DSM Limited and Richard Moulson, Martin Carlton and Lee Wareham of eCloud for their unwavering support in providing this. As ever we are blown away by the generosity of those in our community.
Dave Hampshire said, “It is just brilliant, the lads can get to away games together now and not having to add hundreds of miles on their own cars, it’s already been used once and we won so hopefully it is already a lucky mascot for us”, Dave added, “it’s a great step in the club and our progress and whilst it is for the first team on a Saturday, with the right driver, it can be used for the right occasions for every other girls, boys & ladies team at the club”. (Dave nearly added, “as long as they fill it up”) So thank you again to those sponsors above, the thanks for now is from the club and those who already used it, hopefully over the coming months and years many of our players, adults and youths, will all get to travel in style. Photo caption: Last week the keys were formally handed over to the club and Dave Hampshire for our new club Minibus.
This meant that the council had no legal budget agreed – pushing council finances into a disastrous position. The vote was then taken again. Once again, the Labour amendment was given the green light, but the main council budget was this time agreed. Green councillors changed their decision and now abstained, and the liberal democrats voted against it. Speaking about this Cllr Cate McDonald, Labour (Executive Member for Finance) said: “Setting this year’s budget has been immensely hard and has meant some tough choices being made none of us would want to make.
Do you want to achieve your dream of studying at university? DISCOVER is a FREE award winning short course, designed to inspire adults who haven’t been to university to progress with their learning. On the DISCOVER course you can expect to:
“It simply beggars belief that the Green Party has at this final stage failed to support their own budget.
• Find out what it’s like to study at university through informal learning activities
“Some of these cuts were put forward from their portfolios by their Co-Operative Exec members. So it goes to show how divided their party is. They can’t even support their own Executive decisions.
• Meet new people and build your confidence
“If it weren’t for Labour the council’s finances could have been pushed into a disastrous position – but we’re putting Sheffield first and acting sensibly”.
• Visit local museums and galleries • Get support and advice on returning to education
The next course starts on 23rd March 2022 and will run one morning a week for 7 weeks. It will include a mix of online and face to face sessions. To find out more and to register your interest: www.sheffield.ac.uk/dll/discover Email: dlloutreach@sheffield.ac.uk

WORLD CHAMPION INSPIRES STUDENTS World Champion and multi-Olympicmedal-winning athlete gives an inspiring presentation to students at Stocksbridge High School. World Champion trampolinist Bryony Page was invited to Stocksbridge High School to inspire students with tales from her recent successes at the Olympics and World Championships. Bryony, whose visit included a trampolining masterclass, gave a presentation to students about reaching the 2021 tournaments, focussing on aspiring excellence and overcoming adversity. “It important to surround yourself with a support system with similar mindsets who can help you on your journey,” Bryony said. She advised children with an interest in sport to “look to your friends and family as well as professionals with an interest in sport or nutrition to help you through”. Bryony spoke about her support system, including her coach, parents, and teaching staff from the sixth form and University, as being integral to her success. Over the past few years Bryony has unfortunately struggled with an ankle injury.
Phil Banton, PE lead at Stocksbridge High School, said: "It’s an important message for our students to see, and understand how a setback, such as an injury doesn’t have to spell disaster”. “Bryony was able to recover from her injury and since then, has gone on to have incredible success including her Olympic bronze medal. It’s a great message.” Injury wasn’t the only obstacle that Bryony overcame,
“I have had to fight adversity throughout my career” she said, “I have been told that I am too tall or too old to compete but here I am, World Champion at 31”, “Listen to yourself and your gut, believe in yourself ”. Bryony Page is the most successful female in British trampolining history. She is a four-time British Champion and has medalled in the Olympic Games, European Championships, and World Cup. She is the current World Champion. Bryony took up trampolining at the age of nine. She also attended the University of Sheffield where she graduated with a firstclass honours degree in 2015.

He was due to stand trial for his crimes in 2018 but he fled to the Cape Verde islands in the Atlantic Ocean and refused to return to the UK. The trial continued in his absence and he was convicted and sentenced to two years and six months in prison. Balme was tracked down and returned to the UK to begin his jail term by officers from HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC).
Timothy Atkins, Assistant Director of HMRC’s Fraud Investigation Service, said: “Balme stole taxpayers’ money and thought he could escape punishment for his crimes, but he was wrong. “We continue to work closely with UK and international partners to relentlessly pursue absconders and ensure they face justice. “We encourage anyone with information about tax fugitives or tax crimes to report it to HMRC online.” HMRC worked with the Crown Prosecution Service, Home Office, Interpol and Cape Verde authorities to secure the return of Balme. Balme was returned to the UK on March 3 and appeared at Sheffield Crown Court via video link the following day, where his two year and six-month prison sentence was confirmed.

Day of reflection Sheffield Cathedral is inviting people from Sheffield, South Yorkshire and the wider community to honour and remember loved ones who died during the pandemic by adding their names to a special Wall of Reflection as part of the National Day of Reflection. Led by end-of-life charity Marie Curie, Sheffield Cathedral’s Wall of Reflection is one of a UK-wide series of tributes being created to mark the National Day of Reflection on 23 March – a day to reflect on the lives of the people who have died during the last two years and support the millions of people who are grieving. Whether from Covid or any other cause. The Very Reverend Abi Thompson, Dean of Sheffield Cathedral said: Covid and the challenges of the last two years has impacted on us all. And although we are now learning to live with Covid, people are still grieving from the loss of loved ones. It is important we provide a place to soothe this pain and to give people the chance to reflect, to grieve, to remember and to celebrate their family and friends who are no longer with us.” People will be able to add their memories of loved ones and their prayers to a Wall of Reflection in Sheffield Cathedral from 10 March through to 23 March, the National Day of Reflection and also in a Memorial Book which will remain open until 30 October.

Village shows support for Ukraine Members of the Oughtibidge Millenium Green group raised a flag in support of Ukraine. Joan Crofts of OMG told Look Local “…we have put a very large flag up in support of the Ukrainian people. Like a lot of people we have been horrified at what has been happening there, and feel helpless and frustrated at not being able to assist. Aside from sending money, clothes and medicine we felt we needed to make a visual statement of support for the Ukrainian country and its people. We are also inviting locals to tie a yellow or blue ribbon/cloths round the tree trunks to make their statements against this war. What was great was, while we were putting the flag up cars were coming past and tooting theirs horns and drivers putting their thumbs up.”
A memorial service will take place in the Cathedral at 5pm on the National Day of Reflection with music and the opportunity to light a candle for loved ones. At the end of October, the traditional time of year for remembering those we have lost, the Cathedral will be holding a further memorial service to enable the community to come together to mourn those we have lost over the past few years. Sheffield Cathedral is open 8:30am to 5:30pm, Monday to Saturday and 8am to 5pm on a Sunday.

After the devastating news that Stannington Brass Band is to lose its rehearsal room and base in the heart of Stannington, they have come home triumphant from the Yorkshire Area Brass Band Championships as winners of the First Section. Under the baton of Sam Fisher, they beat twelve other bands at Huddersfield Town Hall this weekend and, along with the runner-up band, have the honour of representing the Yorkshire Area at the National Finals in September. All the bands played the same test piece - Spectrum by Gilbert Vinter and were judged “blind” by wellrespected adjudicators Alan Morrison and Andrea Price. Sam commented "I cannot thank the band enough for their hard work and commitment during the last seven weeks, it's been an absolute pleasure. Onwards and upwards!" Phil Attrill, Band Chairman said “ It’s the best news we could have hoped for. The band has worked hard and we are all absolutely thrilled with the result”.
Sheffield Music Trails returns
Following a hugely successful debut last August, the Sheffield Music Trails return bigger and better than ever for their second year, providing a full day of free entry shows across 19 independent music venues throughout Sheffield. This includes venues from Castlegate through to Kelham Island, Abbeydale Road to Heeley and West Street down to Leadmill Road. Originally conceived as a multiweekend celebration, this year’s trail condenses all the excitement of the festival into a single day, offering music-lovers an
opportunity to experience a massive variety of amazing performances by some of the finest acts from South Yorkshire and beyond, as well as reconnecting with their favourite venues and discovering some hidden gems after the pandemic kept us away from them for so long - all with absolutely no entry fees. Topping the bill at The Leadmill is North London based indiepop band Kawala, whose latest single 'Hypnotised' has been named BBC Radio 1’s ‘Hottest Record in the World’ as of Monday 21st Feb 2022. There’s

no shortage of talent and variety throughout the day either, with local acts such as Leona Nørskov (The Voice UK) and Bedroom High Club amongst those representing the region. Alongside the fantastic local artists, the addition of UK touring acts such as Abbie Ozard, Jonny Brown (Twisted Wheel), Youth Sector, Voodoo Bandits and Studio Electrophonique add a truly special dimension to the festival, establishing it as a major nationwide celebration of music.
Set up as a joint venture, the trail was funded by South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority & Sheffield City Council, via funding from central government, in order to support the cultural and creative industries in the region. This funding is all in recognition of the hardship faced by the sector throughout the pandemic, and provides a much-needed financial boost for each and every participant as we celebrate the spaces that make our city special.

Sue Noble would like to say a big thank you to T.W Birks for the beautiful book I have received for Steve’s service, I will treasure it forever. Also John Robinson from the Hornsea Society for the full page spread about Steve – you hit the nail on the head. I know you both shared lots of banter over the years. Thanks to the lads of the fishing club who have phoned every week and given me so much support and to Mick, who lost his lovely Mum Doreen just before Steve passed. Sheffield’s young artists finally get to display their work in full The UK’s largest annual art competition for school children finally reopens its doors to exhibition visitors in a few weeks time after Covid forced a two year absence. The Sheffield Young Artists Exhibition – which comprises up to 1,200 pieces of art - is set to take place at Norfolk Street’s Central United Reformed Church on Friday and Saturday, 29th and 30th of April. The event, organised by Sheffield Abbeydale Rotary, invites entries from school children aged 5 to 18 from schools right across the city. The exhibition weekend is the culmination of the Sheffield Young Artists programme. The competition first took place in 2005. The Lord Mayor of Sheffield is set to present the awards to the winners. City-based Graysons Solicitors are the sponsors of the Sheffield Young Artists event. Peter Clark, managing partner, said: “We are delighted to see the event finally happen after all this time. There is so much talent amongst the young people of Sheffield and it’s going to be wonderful to see so much of it going on display in April.” Though the Sheffield Young Artists competition has continued over the past two years Covid restrictions have
meant the full exhibition has been unable to take place. Smaller displays took place at both Art in the Gardens and the Great Sheffield Art Show. But it hasn’t all been doom and gloom for the event in lockdown. The success of Sheffield Young Artists has ended up being the inspiration for a similar event in Bochum, Germany, which takes place later this year. Artworks by the children of Sheffield are set to feature. Ken Marshall, who organises Sheffield Young Artists on behalf of Sheffield Abbeydale Rotary, said: “Though we’ve had a very frustrating two years caused by Covid there have been two bits of very good news – the continued support of Graysons as our sponsor and spreading our influence to Germany! We have worked together with the Bochum Renaissance Rotary Club who have adopted our format and will be holding their first Young Artists exhibition in May 2022.” This year’s exhibition runs from 10am until 7pm on Friday, April 29th and from 10am until 3pm on Saturday, April 30th. Entrance is £1 for adults and free for 18 years and under. Graysons Solicitors, which originally formed in 1925, has a keen interest in local culture and has been the main sponsor of the city’s celebrated Art In The Gardens event for the past three years.

A killer blow
right at the end of the 1st half when a poor defensive read allowed the home side’s hooker space to scamper over the line, leaving the half time score Nestle Rowntree 12pts – Stocksbridge Rugby nil. With the game clearly still there for the taking, Stocksbridge dominated the 2nd stanza and eventually the ‘big rig’ Liam Roebuck plunged over from close range after good work from Woodcock, Bowman and that man Frith at the base. Nestle kicked a penalty following a ruck infringement, and these points were to prove crucial. Still the visitors pushed hard and were further rewarded when skipper Roles-Middlehurst, kindly sponsored by Mr Mick Taylor, finished off a glorious handling move to dive over in the corner, again just too far out for Bowskill to convert. Although Stocksbridge tried hard, the home side were rewarded for their defensive efforts, and injuries to Aspin (cramp), Newton (back) and Hartley (shoulder) along with Fletcher (ankle) all took their toll as Stocksbridge fell agonisingly short at the final whistle : Nestle Rowntree 15pts – Stocksbridge Rugby 10pts, and just a losing bonus point to show for their efforts.
The Fox Catering Man of the Match award was awarded to Jordan ‘spud’ Fletcher, sponsored by Ellie’s Sandwich Shop, for a dominant physical effort, with Woodcock, Bowman and Frith also featuring highly in the reckoning. Not much time for the 1st XV squad to lick their wounds, as they are back in action this weekend, with league leaders Thirsk Rugby the highly fancied visitors to Coal Pit Lane on Saturday, kick off 3pm. Stocksbridge will be hoping their walking wounded are healed in time for the round 4 clash. A frustrated Director of Rugby, Andy Tyers said afterwards, ‘our effort and attitude was first class, and we created enough opportunity to win here’, adding ‘we know we should have taken the points, but credit to their defence for hanging on’. The Club’s Development XV, or ‘Lockers Legends’ were also in action against a suspiciously strong Huddersfield 3rd XV, and despite a gutsy performance, they eventually went down by 49pts – to nil, veteran flyer Ben Senior starred as the home side’s Charlesworth Landscapes Player of the Day.

The sun bathed pitch looked in great condition at the kick-off. A gusty breeze swirled around the ground. Church looked promising going forward, Silsden were very quick on the break. They hit the right post with a good move down the right followed by a deflected shot. Goal 32 minutes. A beautiful defence splitting pass set Reece High free with 30 yards to cover. His first touch took him clear of the defender and his composed finish to the far right, beat the keeper with ease.

A report by Martin Webb High-scoring Silsden, who recently beat Knaresborough 8-1, hosted this fixture for a second time. The first was abandoned after 14 minutes with the score at 1:1 following a serious neck injury to one of the Church players. Silsden had beaten Church 2-0 in Penistone earlier in the season and are now safe in midtable. Church came into this match with 14
Silsden started the second half brightly, but Church had the first big chance, High drew a great save from the Silsden keeper. Again Church were knocking at the door a few times from 2 successive corners. Church were awarded a free kick on the left of the box. Jordan Coduri's direct shot was tipped onto the right post by the goalie. Goal 78 minutes. Silsden immediately responded and worked the ball through midfield. Jos Bradshaw's great strike from 25 yards flew in off the near post.

Nodder grabs a point for Steels Tadcaster Albion 1-1 Stocksbridge PS
Stocksbridge Park Steels fought back to get a point against Tadcaster Albion but they could have got more. Tadcaster struck first when they got an early goal through Donald Chimalilo. Steels got their equaliser early in the second half when Josh Nodder converted a penalty after a foul on Ben Partridge.
Local Sport
The Steels got off to a better start in this game. An early header from Lee Cooksey would be deflected over the bar as Stocksbridge came close to ending their corner hoodoo. Partridge, making his first away start, would also drive a shot wide of the post. But despite this bright start, Tadcaster scored with their first attack of the game. Jordan Deacey did well to evade the defenders before picking out Chimalilo. Coming off the back of scoring twice against Lincoln United, he made no mistake as he put the ball onto his left before striking past Michael Roxburgh.

It was immediately a good start for the Steels in the second half. Good play between Nodder and Partridge got them into the box and when the former Ollerton Town man tried to force the matter, he was tripped in the box and the penalty was given. With usual penalty taker Luke Mangham out with suspension, it SPOT ON: Josh Nodder scored Steel’s equaliser from the penalty spot. Photo by : Ian Revitt was Nodder who stepped up to take the penalty. Defender Brett Lovell ( pictured) said after the game “It was a one-all draw on Saturday away at Silsden and to be honest it’s a measure of how far this team has come since Lenny (Steve Lenthall) took over because we’re disappointed because we only drew the game. We’re a good side, we’ve done really well against teams in the top four or five and we don’t lose many games so it’s a measure of the character that we have in the squad and the management team that we are disappointed to only get a point away at Silsden because we want to win every game.
