Lord Mayor meets
inspirational children The Lord Mayor of Sheffield has visited Paces, the leading specialist centre, charity and school for individuals with Cerebral Palsy and motor disorders.
Cllr Gail Smith came to Paces School in High Green to learn more about the life-changing skills taught through conductive education to the pupils who travel daily from across Yorkshire. The organisation is one of the UK leaders in conductive education which supports all the children to achieve their potential, not just academically but with key skills for life such as sitting, standing, walking, speaking, communication and self-care. The Lord Mayor presented a special award to pupil ‘Captain’ Tobias Weller BEM, the ten-year-old who has raised tens of thousands of pounds for the school, for his fundraising efforts.
play some of his favourite tunes on the piano, something he did during lockdown online helping raise thousands for Paces. Ruth Liu, Headteacher of Paces School and Head of Conductive Education at Paces, said: “It was an absolute pleasure to welcome the Lord Mayor of Sheffield to our school, introduce her to some of our inspirational pupils and tell her all about conductive education and the impact it has. “What our pupils, teachers and staff achieve every day using its techniques and skills is life-changing and I want more children and adults to have that opportunity. To do that, we need as much support as possible and it is humbling that our pupils so often lead the way in raising money to help others benefit from the experience they have had.”

The vital medical equipment was taken from outside the offices of Ecclesfield Parish Council in High Green. The parish council said in a statement: “We are completely disgusted to discover that someone has stolen the defibrillator which was outside our offices. This is a community asset and saves the lives of members of the public on a regular basis. "If anyone has any information about this incident please contact 0114 2845095, or post a letter through our post box anonymously.” Police have also appealed for information about the disappearance of the ‘vital piece of kit (which) massively increases the chance of surviving a heart attack’. They have asked anyone who knows anything to contact the parish council or email Matthew.cook@southyorks.pnn. police.uk

During the visit, the Lord Mayor heard about the New Home for Paces campaign which is raising money so that the school can move to a new fit-for-purpose base at Thorncliffe Hall giving more children more opportunities to benefit from conductive education. Julie Booth, Head of Fundraising and Communications at Paces, said: “There is nowhere else like Paces but to keep doing what we do, and to give others the chance to change their lives through the skills and experience we offer, costs a huge amount of money. “The efforts of children like Tobias and Lennie, plus so many other of our pupils, adults and their families makes a real difference and I am grateful so many individuals, businesses and organisations are pledging their support fort Paces and our campaign for a new home for our school.

life-limiting lung condition that also affects the heart.
Dr Charlie Elliot is a respiratory consultant at the unit, which is one of just six specialist PH treatment centres in England. He said: “Every day we see how much this condition impacts the lives of our patients and we wanted to do something to help the charity that supports them. Some of us have been running for a while and some are beginners – but none of us are looking forward to the long uphill stretch of the event!” Dr Elliot will run the 13.1 miles with fellow consultant Dr Robin Condliffe, ward manager John Harrington, ward sister Charlotte Peirson, clinical nurse specialist Amanuel Teklesenbet, pharmacy technician Mark Graves, and junior doctor Rosie Oatham. They will be joined by Maria Kiely, daughter of the Sheffield Pulmonary Vascular Disease Unit’s director, Professor David Kiely. Dr Elliot added: “Training around busy NHS schedules can be difficult, and the event itself will be tough, but if it means we can raise some money for the PHA UK it is well worth it. Just a couple of hours of discomfort on the lovely hills of Sheffield is the least we can do for them.” The Pulmonary Hypertension Association (PHA UK), is based in Chapeltown and works nationally to support the 8,000 people in the UK affected by pulmonary hypertension. Pulmonary hypertension is caused by the thickening and stiffening of the blood vessels supplying the lungs. The life-limiting condition has no cure but can be managed with specialist care.

‘Dangerous’ junction to be altered A ‘dangerous’ junction in north Sheffield is to be made ‘safer’ Sheffield City Council have informed residents. Bridge Hill junction in Oughtibridge has seen a number of accidents/collisions over recent years. Three people on motorcycles and six people on bicycles, Six of those 9 having been seriously injured in recent years. New proposals by SCC would see Bridge Hill remain open and a continuous footway introduced from summer 2022. SCC will introduce an ‘Experimental traffic regulation order’ to ensure safety until the new proposals are in place. The ‘ETRO’ will prevent drivers from turning right from Bridge Hill onto Station Lane. Gary Chamberlain was chair of ORSAG that campaigned on behalf of residents who were opposed to the original plan to close Bridge Hill . He told Look Local “The current plan to turn right only does not fill me with much confidence as I am aware of one young lady who has been knocked down earlier this year by a car turning right. It is imperative that if it becomes a turn right only then the crossing needs to be moved either further along or before the junction. As for the plan to have a raised area before the junction I believe it to be a sensible option if safety can only be managed through budget restraints.” Another resident said “SCC consulted the local village residents, had several meetings with ORSAG. But regretfully decided not to proceed
with any of the options (due to cost), ignore the findings of its own consultation and adopt a scheme no one was aware of nor consulted on. All very disappointing for the residents of the village that elected these people. Sheffield City council provided this update to residents: “The City Council originally proposed a scheme to close Bridge Hill at its junction with Langsett Road North/South to tackle injury collisions involving people on bicycles and motorcycles being hit by people driving out of Bridge Hill. Unfortunately, the cost of building this scheme has become too expensive to do. Therefore, we are now proposing a lower cost scheme which will put a continuous footway at the junction of Bridge Hill / Low Road / Orchard Street and leave Bridge Hill open. This would make drivers stop (as there is a ramp to drive down) giving them time to look properly for cyclists/motorcyclists. This will be introduced in Summer 2022. As an interim measure while the new scheme is being designed, the City Council is going to introduce an experimental traffic regulation order (ETRO) to put a mandatory right turn at the bottom of Bridge Hill. This would mean that anyone going down Bridge Hill would have to turn right into Low Road and not go ahead to Station Lane. This will reduce the risk of injury collisions involving people on pedal cycles and motorcycles at the junction of Bridge Hill with Orchard Road/Low Road, Oughtibridge. This will be in place from 28th March 2022.
A copy of the Experimental Order, plans showing the roads concerned and a statement of the Council’s reasons for the Order may be viewed on the Council website at https://www.sheffield.gov.uk/home/roadspavements/traffic-orders

Bed Push for Cancer Two friends have organised a unique challenge to raise funds for charity and to help them ‘get out of bed’ in the morning.
MAN ARRESTED FOLLOWING KNIFEPOINT ROBBERY IN PARK Officers investigating a robbery in Rivelin Valley Park on Thursday 17 March have made an arrest.
Debbie Cundy and Richard Hepworth will be challenging themselves to a bed push across the city in celebration of 50th anniversary of the iconic Weston park cancer hospital in 2020.
Police were called at around 12.25pm yesterday following reports that a member of the public had been approached and had their mobile phone stolen at knifepoint. The incident had reportedly taken place in the playground at Rivelin Valley Park, off Rivelin Park Road.
The friends had to postpone the even due to the pandemic.
Officers attended and located a man nearby who matched the description given by the victim. The man, aged 25 and from Sheffield, was arrested on suspicion of robbery and criminal damage.
Debbie told Look Local “I am delighted the fundraising event is back on. The first 50 donations of £25 or more onto the sponsorship page will have their personal message on the bed.
Enquiries are ongoing, and it is not believed that this incident is linked to any previous knife crimes across the district. If you have any information which could assist our officers, please contact 101 quoting incident number 408 of 17 March, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
We are also looking for businesses to sponsor the front, back and sides of the bed.” To donate & support this event. https://wpcc-register-fundraiser. raisely.com/debbie-cundy 1 in 2 of us will be affected by cancer in our lives.

Sheffield to Leeds train cut Northern Rail have announced a series of cuts to rail services in South Yorkshire and the wider region, largely affecting commuter routes between Leeds, Sheffield, and Nottingham.
Royd Nursery Infant School has been award- Mr Sly, Deputy Headteacher commented “We ed the Primary Science Quality Mark. are delighted to receive this award. Credit must go to all of the staff and pupils for their The award is for schools which demonstrate hard work. A special mention must also go how established effective science leadership is to Mrs Swales who is our subject lead for scihaving a sustained impact on science teaching ence. Mrs Swales drives her subject very well and learning across the school. indeed to ensure that children receive the highest quality science lessons”.
“It is deeply disappointing to see yet more cuts to our rail services in South Yorkshire which will have a huge impact on the commuter corridor between Sheffield and Leeds, and the towns and villages in between which rely on those services to stay connected.
7
The report highlights that strong leadership has continued to develop science learning across the school for the benefit of all children and staff. Robust procedures are put into place for both formative and summative assessment that ensures that the delivery of lessons is pitched to challenge and extend all children so that they meet their maximum potential.
The report goes on to say that the teachers at Royd Nursery Infant School have a clear plan for science that features cross curricular links and that all of this helps children understand where science links into their world and adds relevance to their learning.
“We are emerging from the pandemic - people have returned to work and are able to move freely, so efforts should be focused on recovering services, not cutting them back.
Children are provided with relevant and meaningful science activities to enrich their learning. Within the last two academic years Royd Nursery Infant School has received a staggering nine regional or national awards.
“Cuts of this nature run the risk of locking in the damage to public transport caused by the pandemic. They affect peoples job prospects, the ability to grow our economy, encourage more cars to be the roads increasing congestion and pollution and in some cases completely cut off whole communities.
The awards include: The Leading Parent Partnership Award, NAACE Mark Excellence in Education Technology, Sheffield Charter for Quality in the Early Years, Artsmark, Distinction Sportsmark Award, Autism Professional Award – Inspiration Educational Provision, ECO Green Award, Sheffield Schools Active Award – Winners of the Upskilling Staff Award and the Primary Science Quality Mark.
“I will be writing to the Secretary of State about this issue and seeking urgent talks with Northern Rail to discuss this.”

South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership (SYSRP) is teaming up with teachers across the county to try and tackle dangerous and irresponsible school-run parking. Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield schools have been offered new banners urging drivers to keep children safe by parking away from the gates and keeping the entrance clear. It is hoped that the artwork, which schools can also use on their own social media channels, will discourage parents and carers from parking on yellow and zigzag lines or blocking pavements. Deputy Head Teacher Zoe Baker (pictured) said: “The parking situation outside our school can be terrible at times and we’re will-
ing to try any scheme that may help to spread the message. “The safety of our children is our number one priority and we rely on the help of our families to protect pupils during drop off and pick up times. “We know walking to school isn’t always possible but we can’t stress enough the need to park in a safe place which will not put others at risk. “The lines are there for a reason and that reason is to keep our children safe.” Joanne Wehrle, manager of SYSRP, said: “If you park or stop on zigzags or double yellow lines outside a school, you are breaking the law and putting children’s lives at risk. It really is that simple.
Sheffielders who made their ‘mark’ The latest update of the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography is published on Thursday 10 March 2022 and adds biographies of 243 men and women who left their mark on the UK, and who died in the year 2018. Among them are Peter Stringfellow and Roy Bailey. • Born at the City General Hospital in Sheffield, Peter Stringfellow was raised mainly in a terraced house in Marshall Street, Pitsmoor, Sheffield with no inside toilet. He failed the eleven-plus and left Sheffield Technical
School at fifteen. After serving three months in prison for theft – the judge told him, ‘You think you’re quite flash for your age. You’re glib. You need to be taught a sharp lesson’ – he started out organising pop music events in Sheffield (some at St Aidan’s Church) but quickly moved into the nightclub business, perfectly catching the glitzy hedonism of the newly wealthy in the 1980s. A Conservative, he gave his topless dancers the night off when he hosted a fundraiser for the Conservative Party attended by Margaret Thatcher. He later moved into table-dancing clubs.
•For many years Roy Bailey taught sociology at Sheffield Polytechnic (now Sheffield Hallam University) but he was much better known as a key figure in the folk revival from the 1960s onwards. With a rich baritone voice and clear enunciation, his work championed the radical tradition in British politics, which brought him later into a natural and much acclaimed stage partnership with the politician Tony Benn. In 2006 he returned his MBE in protest at Tony Blair’s government’s foreign policy. He lived latterly in Nethergreen Road, Sheffield.

Disabled services When I ring the Sheffield Council as a disabled person for emergency repairs to toilet they say I have to keep calling each day to book an appointment yet when I do they never turn up. Causing a lot of mess (if you know what I mean). Also could the Valley Medical answer me why you don't send district nurses out or doctors to those that can't make it to surgery unless arrange private transport which is not always available. Having to have regular blood pressure and blood tests. However when I ask to speak to a doctor over the phone, I'm sat waiting all day for a call. When the next day comes it says on file I didn't attend when I wanted to speak to doctor over the phone. I’ve tried talking to the council and asking valley medical but with no hope. Just seeing if others are having problems?

I see from recent editions of Look Local for example, that the developer has resubmitted an application to build housing on green fields in the vicinity of Wood Royd Road much to the annoyance of local residents and others from further afield. Part of the response to which has been for objectors to call on other local people in particular to register their disapproval with Sheffield City Council’s (SCC) planning department, if so inclined, before the resubmission is considered by appropriate authority so that the strength of local feeling can be demonstrated and such objections taken fully into consideration. However, given the recent experience of Hollin Busk, I consequently wonder if raising objections on the part of and behalf of local people will prevail no matter how many people so object. For my understanding is that English law tends to be based in large part on precedent, and Hollin Busk can be seen to have a set a precedent for potential developers to appeal to if finding their ambitions blocked by the local planning authority. As a consequent of which, should the local planning authority reject the developer’s proposal, the developer will then appeal and an Inspector will be appointed to make an “independent” appraisal and give his/her decision which will be binding on the local authority. And given that the proposed development at Hollin Busk was by and large allowed by the Inspector at the time due to there being no local authority five year plan regarding such matters being in place, then given that, as far as I am aware, there is still no adequate come appropriate five year plan in existence, then it follows that any future Inspector will decide in favour of development as per Hollin Busk.

Missing Hen Harrier
I started off full of agreement with the recent letter about the missing Hen Harrier in our local area. But I fear the writer went soft as his letter progressed. He suggested that those responsible should be imprisoned only for a second offence. These people act with a great deal of premeditation. These are not impetuous acts of folly. Plans are made, baits are laid, poisons are obtained, guns are primed and adenials, prepared. These are professional criminals and should be treated as such and locked Yet even if in the unlikely event an Inspector does up after the first offence. reject the developer’s planning application, I strongly As it stands the paltry fines for such offences are suspect a final appeal will be made to the relevant almost certainly paid for by the employers who Secretary/Minister of State who will more than encourage their lackies to do the evil deeds and likely overrule any Inspector’s decision in favour take the rap. of the developer. If a serious at the expense of everything and everyone else. breach of health and safety leads to an accident, the manager is held responsible. Why don’t we have the with the current local incumbent I wonder. same law here? Meanwhile, strange is it not, how within hours of Putin invading Ukraine, the local media is full of stories providing examples of how the local politicians have come together to lobby for support for the resultant refugees. Yet they can’t put together a five year plan on the part of locals; seeming to prefer playing politics with each other to their constituents detriment instead. Yours faithfully Michael Parker
Your writer suggests we should actually allow game keepers to kill a certain number of these rare protected birds. That is a bit like telling burglars they can operate freely on certain streets providing they stick to the allocated patch. Surely we don’t want our law enforcers to do deals with the devil. The writer says he doubts that grouse shooting will ever be banned. The way things are progressing I’m not so sure. G Shepherd

Swimmers Swim to Success at Yorkshire Championships 2022
Swimmers from Stocksbridge Pentaqua Swimming Club are again celebrating success after achieving fantastic results at Yorkshire Swimming Association Championships 2022.
Special congratulations go to Paddy N who won 2 silver medals in 50m and 100m freestyle, and a bronze medal in 200m freestyle. Special congratulations also go to Phoebe M whose 50m breaststroke time earned her a place in this year’s British Championships which takes place in April.
The county championships, which were held over 3 weekends during February in Leeds and Sheffield, saw qualifying swimmers compete in a busy programme of events.
After the packed schedule of individual events at the Yorkshire championships, Stocksbridge swimmers then took part in team events which were held on the last day in Sheffield. Seven teams competed in 14 relay races over the day with all 3 of the Stocksbridge boys teams finishing in the top 10 in the freestyle events. A fantastic achievement!
Stocksbridge swimmers swam in over 80 individual events over the 3 weekends and achieved a fantastic overall PB (personal best) rate of 70%. Swimmers also secured 19 topten placings – congratulations to Mateo M, Paddy N, Finley M, Phoebe M and Logan P.
Stocksbridge Rugby routed
A severely depleted playing squad were given no mercy by in form Leeds Medics & Dentists at the weekend, the ruthless students easing their way to a 70pts to nil victory. With just 16 players available & a full back line absent, Globe Holidays sponsored Stocksbridge Rugby had to mend & make do with the bare bones of a side. Although the visitors tried hard, they just could not cope with the pace & agility of the athletic home side, who pounced on just about every Stocksbridge error to rack up a commanding half time lead of 35pts to nil. Stocksbridge lie rooted to the foot of the play off table & will be unable to achieve any of the promotion spots now. The Goodlad Contracting player of the match for Stocksbridge was
the hard working back rower Ricky Rowett, kindly sponsored by Charlesworth Landscapes, with the returning O’Leary, Beal, Jack Spencer & Woodcock also showing up well. ‘it is what it is’ said Director of Rugby, Andy Tyers afterwards ‘to turn up against an inform youthful student side with our depleted ranks is only ever going to end up one way’ adding ‘the effort of the lads involved couldn’t be faulted & this will need to continue into our next match at the weekend’. Stocksbridge are at home this weekend looking to avenge a recent narrow away defeat to York based Nestle Rowntree, the kick off at Coal Pit Lane is 3pm, & entrance is free. Three youngsters from the Club gained representative honours at the weekend, having been selected for Yorkshire Colts in a tournament held
at Sale Sharks training ground in Carrington near Manchester. Aaron Kaye, George Robins & Oliver Fretwell all played well & will be looking for further selections in the coming weeks. The big club news this week is the confirmation of the Annual Presentation dinner, to be held at the Manchester Road Clubhouse on Friday 13th May, with a 7pm start. Award winning comedian Lea Roberts is the host & former England International front row forward Jeff Probyn returns to the club as guest speaker by popular request. Tickets, priced at just £20 are now on sale from the Club & generous sponsors have already been booking tables. The advice is to get in early to avoid disappointment.
Swimmers are hoping to repeat their success at the club’s Spring Open Meet which is being held next month on Saturday 23rd April at Ponds Forge international. Entries are still open for any local clubs wishing to take part. Sponsorship opportunities are also available for local businesses interested in advertising their brand to hundreds of young swimmers and their families. Please email secretarypentaqua@gmail.com for more information on sponsorship opportunities. For more information on Stocksbridge Pentaqua Swimming Club, visit https://www.stocksbridgepentaqua.co.uk/

Barnsley FC 2-6 Oughtibridge Oughtibridge pulled off a superb second half comeback to secure a place in the County Cup semi final for only the third time in their history. Even more remarkable given a host of players missing through injury and suspension. It wasn’t a great start as Barnsley scored two quick goals as Oughtibridge failed to settle but fortunately they were sandwiched by a Kathryn Mudge penalty after Laura Cain was upended. But 2-1 at half time and some honest words at the interval. Mudge quickly levelled with another penalty after Millie Kenyon was fouled and then Lucy Ridley made it 3-2.
A fantastic move involving Annie Longmore and Emily Fowler set up Cain to cross for Kenyon to make it 4-2. Top scorer Kenyon got her eye in and smashed home another couple to complete a quick fire hat trick to round it off at 6-2. Yet another solid performance between the sticks for 18 year old Mollie Hutchinson. Church lose to Rangers Saturday 19th March 2022 Toolstation NCEL Premier Division Penistone Church 1 Winterton Rangers 2
Scorer for Church – James Young 67 Scorers for Winterton – Jamie Ture 6, Dan Walker 69 Attendance - 303
Church made the first opening with a good series of passes down the right. Jordan Coduri's low drive across the box was nearly touched in by Nathan Keightley, but missed the far post by a yard.
free kick hit the right post and the rebound bounced off Chris Snaith, Dan Walker finished the chance off unchallenged from 3 yards out. Some thought there was a hint of offside in the goal.
Goal 6 minutes.
With 3 minutes added time Church's chances of getting a point rested in the balance, but try as hard as they did, they could not get the levelling goal.
Winterton's first attack down the left was converted under pressure by Jaime Ture from the edge of the box with a low shot to the right of goal. Goal 67 minutes.
A report by Martin Webb Winterton's tremendous run of 9 successive league wins, including wins over the top 3, meant they started the match 1 point behind Church with 2 games in hand. Church had won 2-0 at Winterton earlier in the season, as part of their own run of 20 games with only 2 defeats. A perfect spring afternoon with a cold breeze welcomed the teams onto the pitch.
James Young put a long cross in from the left. Reece High running across the flight of the ball confused the keeper and the ball bounced into the middle of the net. PCFC 1 Winterton 1 Goal 69 minutes Church immediately conceded possession and Church conceded a free kick 25 yards out. The direct
Full Time PCFC 1 Winterton 2 Winterton on balance, deserved to win this closely fought match. Church played well and showed all their usual grit and determination, but could not quite convert their openings. Manager Steve Lenthall I’m gutted today losing two-one to Winterton, it was always going to be a tough game as they are the form team in the league. There’s still a lot of games to play, four or five league games, we’ve
got a quarter final of the cup, we have a big influence on who goes up and you never know, you can never say never, look at us in October you’d never have said we would be chasing second spot. The last four games we have to go into it making sure we stay positive and hopefully at the end of the season we have a cup final and top four in the NCEL. All in all I’m disappointed with the result but proud of the lads. Thanks once again to the supporters the attendance of 303 it’s a massive achievement for the club to get the support we are getting Fixtures Saturday 26th March 2022 Toolstation NCEL Premier Division v Garforth Town (away) KO 3 pm

Steels lose at home Stocksbridge PS 0-2 Cleethorpes Town Stocksbridge Park Steels were swept aside by a Cleethorpes Town as they pushed to secure their place in the play-offs.
clearance from the Steels and Alex Flett was able to slip in Robertson who took the opportunity to finish and give the visitors the lead.
Cleethorpes opened the scoring when Brody Robertson latched onto good passing so he could have the space to finish. In the second half, Robertson scored again as he finished off an expertly done counter attack.
Stocksbridge then had their best chance of the game, in the secondhalf. Ben Partridge beat his man and was able to loft the ball over an advancing Jackson. It looked like it could have made its way in but the Owls defence moved quickly to clear the ball away and keep Cleethorpes ahead.
The game started off breathless. Luke Lofts, who’d be a constant thorn in the Stocksbridge defence throughout the game, looked to get a handball decision for a penalty when he broke into the box but the referee sided with the Steels. At the other end, Stocksbridge got a corner which was just about defended by Cleethorpes. Cleethorpes started to take control of the game and Michael Roxburgh did have to beat away a narrow angle shot early on into the game. It was then fair to say that the Owls deserved the lead they’d soon get. Cleethorpes gathered the ball following a poor

And then from that, Cleethorpes got their second. Just two passes after that goal line clearance, the ball landed with Robertson on the right. He moved into the box and just like in the first half, he took the finish well and doubled Cleethorpes’ lead. With Cleethorpes having doubled their lead, they looked to close the game out and make sure that Stocksbridge didn’t launch an unlikely comeback. But Stocksbridge did almost get a goal to make the closing part of the game interesting. Partridge managed to break
through the defence to get clear on goal but Jackson saved with his feet to keep his clean sheet. With that, Cleethorpes were able to hold Stocksbridge off and make sure the Steels had their second home loss in a row. Next game: vs Lincoln Utd 26 March, 3pm KO Unfortunately this week saw the passing of Mrs Marina Kenney, wife of club president Peter Kenney. Marina was a familiar face around the football club for over thirty years, firstly in a voluntary role serving food to supporters in the club canteen and then in later years welcoming visiting directors and officials in our committee room alongside husband Peter. Marina always had a cheerie smile and dry wit for everyone and epitomised what non league football is all about , Marina has been a stalwart in our clubs rise through the leagues and will be sorely missed by everyone.
