Ecclesfield Cemetery graves attacked

A man who damaged a gravestone and ripped up flowers in a cemetery is being sought by police. The culprit struck in Ecclesfield Cemetery off Priory Road in Sheffield between 16:00 BST and 18:00 BST on Easter Monday.

The suspect is described as being about 6ft (1.83m) tall and slim with a grey beard. He was wearing a flat cap, brown jacket and grey trousers. Officers are now appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

Witnesses told police they saw a man hitting out at a gravestone. A ceramic picture of the deceased was found to have been smashed.

In particular, they would like to speak to an elderly man who the suspect engaged in conversation before leaving the scene.

The man then walked to other graves nearby where he ripped up flowers.

He left the cemetery via a gap in the wall and went behind the church hall of the Church of St Mary, South Yorkshire Police said.

Barnsley Walking Festival celebrations

Walk more this May as we celebrate Barnsley Walking Festival

Throughout May 2022, we will be celebrating all of the amazing opportunities there are in Barnsley to get up, get out and walk. Barnsley Walking Festival, which will be running from 1 to 31 May, is an opportunity for people to be active and walk more by joining in with a monthlong programme of free, organised walking activities, from friendly walking groups to walking sports.

"Barnsley has many beautiful places to explore by foot, which some might be right on your doorstep, including many parks, heritage sites and a well-developed Trans Pennine Trail network.

During the Barnsley Walking Festival, we encourage everyone to share pictures of their walks with us on Facebook and Twitter using the hashtag #WhatsYourMove for a chance to win a Barnsley Gift Card.

"Many local groups and organisations run free walks throughout the year, so find the one that works for you and join in our celebration this May."

For more information about the festival, a list of activities available, and how to get involved, please visit the festival's webpage.

As part of National Walking Month 2022, there are over 100 activities on offer that can be viewed on the festival's webpage - there's something for everyone.

Stocksbridge Town Council have donated rose bushes to the local schools and senior citizens residences/care homes to mark the Queens Platinum Jubilee. Planting was carried out on 21st April, the Queens 96th birthday by

Emma from Steel Valley Project together with one of their volunteers Linda. It was a lovely sunny day and school children and senior citizens enjoyed assisting with the planting.

5

The organised walking activities and walking sports are great as you will not only get in some active minutes, but will also meet new people, and who knows – maybe even friends for life. But if you're not feeling like joining one of the activities, it's alright, just take your friends or family and have a walk around your local area – every minute counts! Julia Burrows, Director of Public Health, said: "Walking is one of the easiest ways of incorporating physical activity in your day-to-day life, and it has numerous benefits for your mental and physical wellbeing.

ART EXHIBITION IN AID OF SSAFA SOUTH YORKSHIRE

A local artist, Miranda Trojanowska, will be having an exhibition of her paintings at DINA as part of Open Up Sheffield, a yearly open studios event, with a donation from each sale going to the South Yorkshire branch of SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity.

Miranda, who took up art after an academic career as a research scientist in biochemistry describes her abstract expressionist paintings as “… evolution of thought, creativity, emotion, passion, love, personality and more importantly, the essence and soul of myself…”. While her art might demonstrate her passion, so too does her voluntary work for her local SSAFA branch, where she has been caseworker since 2021. She picks up the story, saying: “It was about four years ago that through work – as a tutor with a company mentoring and training people for new careers – I met a veteran of the Gulf War. His experience of that forgotten conflict had left him with crippling PTSD, anxiety, and depression. “Although he successfully completed his qualification, I felt that there was more, something beyond that qualification, that I could have done.”

Miranda, who has no experience of Armed Forces life, describes how she became a voluntary caseworker for SSAFA: “An RAF veteran friend mentioned SSAFA – I’d not heard of it before – so I looked into it, and thought: ‘Why not volunteer?’ “I completed my caseworker training in May 2021 and have been taking on cases for SSAFA ever since. It is an incredibly rewarding experience, but very humbling, listening to the stories from the veterans or spouses of veterans who had served our country. “It’s a privilege to help people that had helped us, and who have helped those of other countries, but I just wish,” she concluded, “that I’d been in a position to help my student more at the time.” If you – whether a veteran or not – have time to spare to volunteer for SSAFA, then visit ssafa.org.uk/ South-Yorkshire.

Julia Davies, Enterprise and Talent United Officer at the College, added: “This year’s Childcare Industry Week has been mammoth. We have been so fortunate to have been visited by some truly inspirational guest speakers and I know how appreciative our Childcare and Education Professions students are to them all. She also touched on the roles she undertakes as Head such as finance management, building maintenance management, administrative work and the responsibility she has to share the collective student voice. She said: “Success looks different for everybody; you have to find what makes you tick. What’s really important is finding the right fit and I encourage all students to never give up a vocation before trying the same thing elsewhere. “It isn’t a race and there isn’t one route throughout your life – you can explore careers and you’ve got to enjoy the journey. Remember to be kind to

yourself and never allow an expectation of you to define you.”

We have made so many friends over the years, both clients and supporters and obviously can’t mention names, you know who you are. You collected, you picked, you packed and were part of a small team that spent thousands of hours making sure we were always able to open and help. That’s it, fly rods and sun hats ready.

Advancing years and all the aches and pains that go hand in hand with those years have finally won and it is time for a new and a hopefully younger and fitter team to carry on our mission.

With over 70 apprenticeship programmes available in industry sectors including Accountancy; Business; Catering and Hospitality; Childcare and Education Professions; Construction; Creative and Digital Media; Engineering; Health and Social Care Professions; Management; Sport; Travel and Tourism and Warehousing and Logistics, there will be an apprenticeship for you.. Two new solo shows at Cupola Gallery Two new solo shows at Cupola Gallery explore what it means to be physically and emotionally connected or disconnected with people and our environment. Pathos by Lee Hardman Fulfilment Centre by Jamie Frost Exhibition Dates: 30 April – 4 June Opening evening: Friday 29 April 7:30-9:30pm – All welcome. Hospitality provided. “Overall I’m always thinking about connections; I’m thinking about our human nature and our commonality. My paintings consider and reflect on the deeper understanding I think we share as human beings, as individuals.” Lee Hardman Lee Hardman creates powerful figurative paintings using a restricted colour palette. His choice of colours and method of mark making seems to intensify our immediate response to the faces and figures depicted.

Lee is exhibiting five different collections of work. • Red ground/mother paintings: As an artist I try to always use what I know, to paint from experience, and here I was thinking about my influences. I wanted to consider the mother, the idea of the mother figure. I wanted to reach for the origin of things in a sense.

• Self portraits - It’s hard for me to put into words what it is I’m trying to convey with my self-portraits because much of it is unconscious. Often my mark making can appear loose, unfinished even, but I like to think that this allows the viewer to give something of themselves.

ture (specialising in wood), drawing, painting, ceramics and photography.

• Red Judy – Monoprints. I wanted to make something repeating; images that are both a unique instance and yet the same. • Woman Laughing series - The intriguing thing about the laugh is the duplicity of it, yet somehow, the sincerity of it. It can be many things. It can be a mean, spiteful, nervous, embarrassed, or it can be completely joyous, but it is always revealing. • Making faces series - The Making Faces series began in lockdown and during the Covid pandemic as a reaction to the surreal and anxious state of being at that time. Cricket report Stocksbridge 1st XI 168-8 (Jack Newton 67, Andy Hirst 29) Sheffield Collegiate 171-5 (Jake Vickers 3-29)

Stocksbridge 1st XI travelled to Sheffield Collegiate looking to make it three league wins from three. Andy Hibbert won the toss and the 1st elected to bat first. Ben Cherry hit a huge six the second ball he faced but was removed for 8. Andy Hirst and Matt Price began to build a partnership but a mix up in the middle caused Price to be run out, the score 49-2. Andy Hirst was removed shortly after for a well made 29. Liam Grayson dug in but couldn’t carry on his fine form as he was removed for 14. Jack Newton was his usually destructive self as he began to take the game away from Collegiate. Joe Hibbert was backing him up but ran himself out for 14. A tale of the 1st innings as batters got in and got themselves out. Newton was finally dismissed for a very well made 67 off 62 balls. Jon Pickford stuck around at the end as he finished on 15 not out. The 1st posted 168-8 which they might feel was a little under par. The second innings began with Collegiate getting off to a good start. However Jake Vickers struck to leave the score 25-1. Joe Hibbert picked up the second wicket but the 1st XI struggled to gain any momentum in the innings. A partnership of 86 made collegiate firm favourites and put them into the driving seat. Jack Newton gave his all with bowl and tried his best to pull the 1st XI back into the game. Jack Vickers took two late wickets to finish with 3-29 but it was all in vein as Collegiate got over

the line with 8 balls to spare. A disappointing, yet frustrating loss where with a few more performances in the game the 1st could have made it three from three. They entertain Rockingham 2nd at Bracken Moor this Saturday.

Stocksbridge 2nd XI 195-9 (C Haywood 82*, J Hague 21, J Dowde 20) vs Hatfield Town 2nd XI 120 all out (P Hargreaves 3-22, J Hague 3-44, C Thwaites 2-17) Stocksbridge 2nd XI hosted preseason promotion candidates Hatfield Town this weekend. Captain Thwaites won the toss and elected to bat. Wickets fell in clusters, with 3 of the top 4 reaching double figures, however failing to form a meaningful partnership. The middle order provided little resistance and Stocksbridge collapsed to 79-8. In need of a hero, Callum Haywood walked out to join John Dowde in the middle.

The pair took to the Hatfield bowlers, knocking boundaries to all parts. Both batsmen looked comfortable, working perfectly in tandem. Haywood was smoking it to all parts and looking in fine form as he cruised past his half century. Dowde, playing in just his 2nd ever game, wasn't to be outdone, registering his first 6, clearing the leg-side boundary. The pair put together an unbelievable 110 run 9th wicket partnership, resurrecting Stocksbridge and enabling them to post 195-9 from their 40 overs. Cal Haywood finished on a superb 82* from just 51 deliveries, including ten 4s and four 6s. (Cal Haywood 82*, James Hague 21, John Dowde 20). Hatfield's reply never got going with wickets falling at regular intervals. That man Haywood again broke the deadlock, removing opener Platt for 0. Cutts and Yemm provided some resistance for Hatfield, however some excellent bowling from Paul Hargreaves and James Hague restricted the visitors to 74-6. Hatfield were never anywhere near the required run rate, requiring over 100 runs with under 15 overs remaining. Thwaites and Haywood came back into the attack to clear up the Hatfield lower order, finally being bowled out for just 120, a 75 run victory for Stocksbridge. Wickets shared; with Paul Hargreaves 3-22, James Hague 3-44, Chris Thwaites 2-17 and Cal Haywood 2-35. Excellent win for the boys in green, off the mark in the YCSPL.

aspects of human interaction. Developing from earlier figurative work, all rely on methods of disguise, distortion, concealment or objectification to speak about the shifting gaps between us. A large part of the exhibition consists of drawings in which the artist describes actions and movements in increasingly simple terms. “Jamie's work centres around two main obsessions: the figure and wood. His contorted forms are pinned, carved and held. They are a less a representation of the exterior self but of the subjects inner workings. More recently he has been exploring absence in the modern world and the reactions to mechanisation. Fundamentally he is looking at how we relate internally to the outside world.” Graham Shapley, Curator and Manager. “The work in both exhibitions is uncompromising and challenging, strong and visceral. Two powerful exhibitions that are not be missed.” Karen Sherwood, Director.

Club Championship Round 1 Completed With the summer season in full flow, the Gents at Stocksbridge Golf Club competed in the first round of the Club Championship on 30 April. Several of the major competitions through the summer are used to determine the overall champion golfer of the year. The first round was the Whitbread Cup, which is played under an unusual format called a Bogey competition. Players play match play against the course and score a plus for a win, a minus for a loss and 0 for a half on each hole. In a big field of 74 competitors (considering it was a Bank Holiday weekend), Mick Hulbert (12) won the competition 3 up against the course. Mick's round was very steady and included 11 pars. Dave Buxton (10) finished second, 2 up against the course, again with some very consistent golf. Four players Lee Bowling (17), Nick Wood (16), John Wood (22) and Pete Westhead (10) - all finished 1 up against the course, but Lee took third place, finishing better against the course over the back 9. The Gents and Ladies competed together on 1 May in the Spring Mixed Foursomes. This is a tough format of alternative shots between each pairing of gents and ladies. Each pairing receives 50% of their combined handicap allowance. The winners were Alison Sedgwick and Craig Batty (22) with a net 61. Sue and Steve Hill (22) were second with a net 64. Lady Captain, Heather Evans and Brian Dobb (28) were third with a net 68. Bev Sykes and Frank Milnes (27) also scored a net 68, but lost out on countback.

The Dragons Section competed for the Founders Trophy on 27 April, a stroke play format and the scoring was very good, helped by excellent playing conditions. The overall winner came from Division 1, with Mick Siddall (18) shooting a net 59, 6 shots below his handicap. Mick's round included 1 birdie and 8 pars. Second and third in Division 1 were Pete Mannion (18) and Stuart Marsh (19), both with net 62s, Peter taking second on countback. Division 2 winner was Tony Peers (22), with a net 61, good enough to take second place overall. Doug Needham (21) also managed a net 61, losing to Doug on countback, but which was good enough for third place overall. Bill Boucher (29), finished third in the division with a net 63. Through the week there have been two Pro's Prize Stableford competitions on 28 April and 1 May. The mid-week competition was won by John Wood (22) with 37 points. Danny Costello (1), Nigel Eggenton (9) and John Slodyczak (10) all finished with 35 points, but finished in that order on countback. The 1 may competition was won by Dave Buxton (9), with 39 points. Neil Elliott (12) was second with 37 points and Luke Bissatt (3) third with 36 points. Pete Mannion (17) also scored 36 points, but lost out to Luke on countback. Finally, the Ladies Mid-week 9-hole competition was won by Sam Wood (18) with 19 points. Heather Evans (15) was second with 18 points, the same score as Margaret Pearson (14), but pipping her on countback.

3 Points on the road

Notts County 2-3 Oughtibridge WM Ladies The game got off to an even start with chances for both sides. Notts County proved themselves difficult to break down until the 25th minute when Millie Kenyon struck the ball hard from outside the box, it went across the goal and found the back corner of the net.

4 minutes into extra time Notts county converted a chance that started with a late free-kick. The game then fired up, 3-2 to the bridge with less than 2 minutes remaining. Notts county pushed hard but the bridge defence stood strong and resilient to the end to see out the game. A great 3 points and another whole team performance, next up Rotherham United ladies on Thursday.

No booking required With the game flowing, the bridge looked set to extend the score-line, and Cheryl Mawhood duly obliged when she lobbed the keeper from 25 yards. Minutes later Oughtibridge conceded a penalty, ending the half at 2-1 to the bridge. The second half got off to a flyer with less than 5 minutes played, a piece of brilliant build-up play lead to Emma Wall slotting the ball to the right of the keeper.

Mon - Fri: 8:30am - 4:30pm (last test) Saturday: Closed Sunday: Closed That excellent team goal left the ladies at 3-1 with most of the half still to play. The rest of the match flowed both ways with chances at either end but bridge were still pilling on the pressure and looked strong going forward every time.

Birdwell wheelers “Last Sunday saw Wheeler Paul Heggie ride in his first Open Time Trial of the season, the Team Sheffield 10 mile event on the A60 at Cuckney Nottinghamshire. On a day when a strong headwind on the outward leg mitigated against fast times, Heggie finished in 17th place with a time of 27m 25s. This placed him 3rd in the 60-69 year old age group.
