Community Church vandalised ‘again and again’ A community Church in Stocksbridge subject to repeated vandalism, receives help from local business to tackle vandals. Stocksbridge Christian centre on Cedar Road, has been the subject of many acts of vandalism over the years but this year has been especially bad. After two kitchen windows were recently damaged the total cost of replacement windows in the past year exceeded £2000. The church hosts lots of community outreach/activities take place, youth club, Girls and boys brigade. Run coffee mornings. Elizabeth Brook, church council secretary and volunteer, for over 40 years, told Look Local “Over the years we have to increase measures to stop damage and prevent accidents, but in the last year we have had to spend over £2000 on repairs”

LOCAL WINDOW COMPANY HELPS OUT However their continued battle against the vandalism received some good news this week when local window company Deepcar Home Improvements informed the church they would carry out repairs for free. The church believe the damage maybe done by youths in the area who have nothing better to do and feel disappointed to have to keep spending thousands on repairs from a community it serves so many to help. Elizabeth Brook “ We are so grateful to DHI for carrying out the work free of charge it really does help out and means a lot.” Lots of community outreach/activities take place, youth club, Girls and boys brigade. Run coffee mornings.

Police make arrest after public report white van Police received reports the owner of the white vehicle pictured below is a prolific drug user and driver in and around Stocksbridge. SYP responded and claim to have found the vehicle parked up in one of its regular haunts and blocked it in to speak with the occupants.

Police said “The vehicle stunk of Cannabis and both occupants were subjected to a search under the Misuse of Drugs Act, during which a small amount of Cannabis was recovered. The driver was then subjected to a roadside drugs wipe, which he failed. He was subsequently arrested and taken to custody where a blood sample was obtained from him. This has now been sent for analysis and should he come back over the legal limit of 2 micrograms of Cannabis per litre of blood, he will be sent to court and will face a mandatory 12 month driving ban, along with a fine.”

Defensive military ‘ditch’ unearthed

Wadsley and Loxley Commoner’s have for the past two weekends been ‘doing’ some real-life archaeology on the Common. The group have investigated a winding ‘ditch’ just below the Long Lane car park. As they had hoped, it proved to be a defensive military trench. On the side facing downhill, each of the ‘wiggles’ has a pair of large stones, angled to form a firing station (a ‘loophole’).

Inspirational Lennie hands over £20,618 cheque to Paces School A Yorkshire ten-year-old who spent the Covid lockdowns learning songs to play on the piano, delighting supporters with his tunes and using them to fundraise for his special school, has handed over the thousands of pounds raised. Over the past two years, Lennie Street, from Morley near Leeds, has collected an incredible £20,618 in donations for Paces School, the Sheffield-based leading centre for conductive education. He has Cerebral Palsy and Hydrocephalus and is not able to stand or walk independently but was determined not to let the challenges he faces get in the way of his fundraising efforts which began while he was forced to spend time at home and away from the classroom in the first lockdown. Lennie’s initial target was just £750 – he has ultimately raised more 27-times that amount thanks to celebrity support from the likes of Gary Barlow, Marcus Rashford, Peter Andre, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Nigella Lawson, Martin Kemp, Jo Whiley and Johnny Vegas.

Councillors raise concerns as hotel stops operating to house Asylum Seekers Liberal Democrat Councillors are opposed to the use of Staindrop Lodge in Chapeltown to house asylum seekers by the Home Office. Despite written concerns being raised by Sheffield City Council to the Home Office, it has been confirmed that a number that families have arrived at the hotel in the past few days.

Local Lib Dem Councillor Mike Levery said; “The hotel was previously used to house rough sleepers during the pandemic until June last year, with many issues raised at the time by local residents. The hotel was starting to get back on its feet since then and trade had picked up. However, once again, it has ceased operating as a hotel, and will house asylum seekers for the foreseeable future.” “We, of course, support Sheffield being a ‘City of Sanctuary’, but we simply do not think this a good location to be keeping people in. The Council wrote to the Home Office to raise several issues a number of weeks ago with respect to the use of Staindrop Lodge, including the suitability of its location, access to medical care, education and the availability of support for the residents, with the hotel not being near the facilities these families need. Sheffield City Council cannot endorse the use

of this hotel for this purpose; a response from the Home Office is still to come. We are a caring city, and it’s important that we do our best for asylum seekers.” “We have received confirmation from the Home Office that the hotel will be for family groups in the main, with no adult single males.” “The Home Office has a policy of not notifying the local community when a hotel is used for this purpose; Councillors Alan Hooper, Ann Whitaker and myself believe it is vital that the facts are put in the public domain so local residents are aware. Initiatives like this need public support and factual communication is vital to combat misinformation and rumourmongering.” “Just to restate, your local councillors and Sheffield City Council do not support the use of Staindrop Lodge for housing asylum seekers. This is a Home Office initiative. It is incumbent on our local MP, Miriam Cates, to take action and raise residents’ concerns and respond to the concerns already raised by your local councillors.”

The money raised will go towards the efforts to move Paces School to a new home at Thorncliffe Hall in Sheffield. It will allow more children with special needs, like Lennie, to be taught life-changing skills - such as sitting, standing, walking, speaking, communication and self-care. Julie Booth, Head of Fundraising and Communications at Paces, said: “Lennie is an absolute superstar and we cannot thank him enough for his incredible fundraising. To set out to raise £750 and end up raising over £20,000 is unbelievable and the impact that money will have is huge. “His incredible fundraising efforts will help so many young people from across Yorkshire to have the life-changing opportunity to experience conductive education in a state-ofthe-art environment at our new home for Paces School. “Thank you so much Lennie. We love listening to your music and we know from the amazing support you have received that we are not alone.”

2022 is a very significant year in the long life saving history of St John. Not only are we preparing in communities across the country to support the celebrations of the Platinum Jubilee of Her Majesty the Queen, the Sovereign Head of the Order of St John since her accession to the throne, we are also celebrating a remarkable milestone for our young volunteers with the Centenary of our Cadets. Since 1922, young people have, through St John, learned and applied their first aid skills to save lives and support their communities. We regularly hear of volunteers under the age of 18 who have successfully used their first aid knowledge in often difficult situations and their dedication and compassion is a daily inspiration.

Your Letters Irresponsible senior government The Sue Gray report lays bare the scale of the irresponsible behaviour at the heart of UK Government. The arrogance with which senior members held gatherings and toasted colleagues whilst everyone else obeyed rules, often with immense personal sacrifice, is shocking and enraging. Doctors worked tirelessly, exposing them to risk, as their patients were suffering or dying from Covid-19, while senior UK Government officials partied. British Medical Association

Partygate - new low

Miriam Cates- may I remind you that you represent an electorate who have a right to responsible and honest leadership. We have suffered under covid in many and different ways. Even while suffering, we by and large followed the rules, because we are responsible and we care about others. We didn’t feel like partying. I look forward to hearing you have decided you can no longer support this leader. Regards J Cooke

‘Tree City of the World’ Dear Editor,

Partygate represents a low point in UK politics with respect to morality, honesty, arrogance and illegality. The government’s response has been disingenuous with delayed and possibly spiked investigations, incorrect statements to Parliament, smirking empty apologies, cosmetic staff changes amongst Downing Street junior staff and a general uncaring attitude to those who have suffered traumatically during the pandemic. The government’s diversions have been plentiful such as Ukraine, the financial crisis and an attempt to exaggerate ‘beergate’ following the local elections. Up to Wednesday 25th May am the Conservative position was to wait for Sue Gray’s report, by the same afternoon it had changed to ‘lets move on’. Hardly time for serious consideration! Couldn’t a competent government deal with multiple issues without trying just to move to areas that they would prefer to boast about? The Prime Minister has been fined and should resign. Regretfully he is being supported by many Conservative MPs including the representative for Penistone and Stocksbrige, Miriam Cates. Her arrogant references to ‘my constituents’ in a television interview on Wednesday 25th May emphasised that my only common ground with her is, regretfully, that my postcode places me in the Penistone and Stocksbridge constituency boundaries. Do we all need to give serious consideration to this ‘red wall’ issue and ethically base future voting to fit with the polls that comprehensively do not support this Conservative Government? Brian Walsh S36

Partygate - ‘I can’t move on Dear Look Local readers I for one can’t “move on”! The party gate scandal is yet another shocking example of the prime minister and his team sticking 2 fingers up to the electorate. Even to their own security and cleaning staff! It must be a difficult path for Tory MPs if they are only now coming to realise that this PM, elected on such a large majority, who they had such hopes in, who they seemingly forgave much (the writing was on the wall to be fair) , has shown himself to be a lawbreaking, dishonest and irresponsible leader, shamefully unfit for office. Who won’t now do the right thing by resigning. It is vital that Conservative MPs do now admit this. Many bad leaders have had overwhelming majorities. It needs brave colleagues with integrity who do not want to be complicit to admit this. So

With interest, I read your ‘Tree City Of The World’ item (issue 1219), accompanied by an image of the night felling on Rustlings Road. Your piece gave the impression that the accolade – jointly conferred by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations United Nations and Arbor Day Foundation – was solely in response to efforts by the Sheffield Street Tree Partnership and that the Partnership formed in 2021, in response to a “row” initiated by “local residents”. Each of those assertions is wrong. The first meeting of the Partnership was on 20/8/2019. In May 2015 a petition was launched by a newly formed tree group. It was Sheffield’s first tree group – Save Our Rustlings Trees (SORT). The group reached out to citizens, politicians, local authority Officers, contractors and others, in an effort to persuade them of the necessity for and benefit of a strategic approach to management of Sheffield’s tree populations. This was with a view to helping ensure that: 1) ALL tree populations in the city are recognised as part of an urban forest that forms the backbone of Sheffield’s green infrastructure; 2) trees are valued and the range of valuable benefits that they afford to communities and neighbourhoods are recognised, valued and factored in to decision-making; 3) tree populations are managed sustainably, as defined by the UK Forestry Standard, in accordance with current good practice guidance and recommendations. Two very detailed SORT communications were distributed by Sheffield City Council (SCC), as ‘petition hand-outs’, to every Councillor in the city, when Councillor Terry Fox was the Cabinet Member for Environment & Transport (now SCC Leader). Those documents detailed the basis for the campaign and the hopes, expectations & requests of campaigners. The first hand-out formed part of the SORT petition – ‘debated’ on 1/7/2015; the second formed part of the petition presented by the Nether Edge tree group – ‘debated’ on 3/2/2016. On 25/8/2015, Sheffield Tree Action Groups was founded to continue and develop further the campaign that SORT had established. On 19/4/2018, SCC was effectively ‘forced’ to scale back its mass felling programme, as a result of regulatory intervention by the Forestry Commission, with threat of criminal proceedings if it did not. Subsequently, SCC formally adopted its first city-wide tree strategy, on 12/12/2018, and its first street tree strategy, on 26/3/2020, in fulfilment of a policy commitment made in 2010, and in honour of promises made to SORT in 2015. As part of the city-wide strategy, a private firm – Treeconomics – was hired to assess

the value of Sheffield’s trees and “measure the effects and benefits” that Sheffield’s trees provide. The accolade that SCC has received is because, by doing all of the above – albeit only after years malpractice and resistance and opposition from Labour Councillors and SCC chiefs – SCC has been able to demonstrate that it has met the “5 Core Standards” necessary to qualify for the accolade. It is NOT just for the way the highway tree population is managed. In 2016, the tree debacle led to action at the High Court of Justice - the case of R (Dillner) v Sheffield CC and Amey Hallam Highways Ltd (2016). Commenting on the £2.2bn highway maintenance project, section 195 of the judgement states:

“…the only person or body within the Council with the power to take actions or make decisions with regard to the works was the Cabinet member responsible. In particular the full Council had no power to do so.” Thank you to the 10,000, plus, supporters that signed the SORT petition, and all those that then successfully petitioned for and secured change from a ‘strong leader’ model of local government to a ‘committee’ model. Grants of upto £50k availabe to ‘High Street’ businesses Blood cancer charity urges people in Sheffield to save lives after fall in registrations • DKMS is urging more people from Sheffield to join the blood stem cell register • Last year, lifesaving registrations in Sheffield fell by 48% compared to 2020 • This follows a shocking national trend, with just over a third (37%) of people registering in the first 3 months of this year compared to last Spring • DKMS is urging people to register now, to give someone a second chance at life at dkms.org.uk DKMS is urging people in Sheffield to register as blood stem cell donors to help give a second chance at life for someone with blood cancer. The charity continues to feel the aftershocks of the pandemic which devastatingly impacted the number of people signing-up. Lifesaving registrations in Sheffield have fallen by 48% compared to 2020. There is an urgent need for people to help meet the demand for donations and reverse the decline in registrations. Sadly, Sheffield follows a national trend, with just over a third (37%) of the number of people in the UK registering in the first 3 months of this year compared to last Spring.

A stem cell transplant can be the last hope of survival for patients and despite the hope of a return to normalcy, a big push is needed in 2022 to help give those with blood cancer the best chance. A blood stem cell donation from a genetically similar person can offer a second chance at life for those in need. Taking the first steps to register as a potential blood stem cell donor can be done within a few minutes from the comfort of your own home. If you are aged between 17-55 and in general good health you can sign up for a home swab kit online at dkms.org.uk

Half tickets gone for King Mojo return

It might be over 55 years since the original venue shut but demand for arguably Sheffield’s most renowned club of the 1960s hasn’t diminished with time. Over half the tickets for a King Mojo Reunion have already been sold. The club – which was opened by Peter and Geoff Stringfellow in March 1964 at 555 Pitsmoor Road – was voted Sheffield’s best venue of the 1960s by hundreds of former clubgoers in a recent poll. The venue now adorns the front cover of the brand new ‘Dirty Stop Out’s Guide to 1960s Sheffield’ book which is set to be launched at a King Mojo Reunion held at The Library (opposite the Olympic Legacy Park) in Sheffield’s East End on Friday, June 10th.

King Mojo made its name for attracting up-and-coming stars that went on to become global icons. Artists like Stevie Wonder, Jimi Hendrix, The Who and Ike and Tina Turner were just four of the scores of acts that performed at the teenage club that didn’t sell alcohol. Former club-goer and renowned soul/Motown DJ Greg Heap will be on the decks playing the original sounds of the Mojo. Author Neil Anderson, who has compiled the book with help from Dave Manvell, said: “The King Mojo still holds a special place in the hearts of hundreds of people that attended in those three short years. But the club’s legendary status has allowed it to transcend generations and over the years it has become a byword for cool.”

Grants of up to £50,000 could be available to businesses in Sheffield to transform under-used spaces on the High Street. Following the impact of the pandemic on city centre footfall and trade, we are working to support local businesses to revive empty spaces and bring vibrancy to areas of the city centre that have struggled in recent years.

Expressions of Interest for the ReNew Fund are welcome for prime locations on and around Fargate and High Street, including Chapel Walk, Orchard Square, Norfolk Row and Surrey St. Businesses from all industries are encouraged to apply, including food and beverage, retail, leisure, hospitality and arts and culture. Fargate and High Street are at the centre of the Council’s plans to rei-

magine the city centre and will soon be home to five-storey Event Central, a year-round events and exhibition space, as well as a new outdoor performance space and improved lighting and seating facilities. The improvements will be funded by the £20.8m pot of funding from the Future High Streets Fund which the Council successfully bid for last year, and public sector investment.

Rugby Club win CAMRA ‘club of the year’ Stocksbridge Rugby Club is Sheffield and District CAMRA Club of The Year 2022. Luci Loxley, Bar Manager said: 'this has come as a total surprise. Thanks to all the staff involved. We are very pleased.' Previous winners in 2017, this busy social club is open weekday evenings and all day at weekends, offering two or three real ales: Bradfield Blonde as a regular plus one Bradfield guest and another guest from a local brewery. The rugby club was originally formed in 1962 as a section of Stocksbridge Steel Works Social Services. Sixty years later, it has sports teams in local leagues, two teams in the pool league, and a very successful table tennis team. The building originally opened in 1866 as Horner House Primitive West End Chapel. The foundation

stone celebrations for the chapel and schoolroom, are described by John Wenn in an 1866 Primitive Methodist magazine. The stone was laid by GH Benson Esq. and the ceremony was followed by a “plentiful tea” in the nearby Co-operative society store. Speakers included Revs C Lace, R Bryant and John Wenn and Messrs GH Benson, F Hill, R Holden and John Manterfield. In 1932, the name changed to the West End Methodist Church. The building was extended in 1889 and the frontage was remodelled in 1959. This as, ‘it was felt that the ever-increasing flow of traffic ….. constituted a real danger to our scholars as they came straight down the Church steps into the main road.’ Almost half a century ago, in 1974, the chapel closed and was left to rot. It was acquired by the rugby club in 1983. The building was gutted and the inside completely rebuilt. The

original first floor which sloped from front to back was replaced. All the work was completed by members of the club. The new social centre reopened in 1985 using the old downstairs schoolroom. Three years later, in 1988, came the official opening when the upstairs function room came into use. This room has it's own bar and is often used for private events: everything from barn dances to childrens parties. The original 1865 Deed of Transfer signed by the Trustees with the vendor, Samuel Fox, states that: ‘No building erected upon the said plot of land shall be used as a beer house or public house …. without the consent in writing of the said Samuel Fox or his heirs or assigns.’ We assume that this consent has occurred. The presentation will be on Friday 3rd.June at 17:00, to coincide with their Jubilee Beer Festival.

That man Adam Frith has been voted in as Captain of the 1st XV for Globe Sponsored Stocksbridge Rugby Club for next season 2022/2023. The livewire scrum half is looking forward to the challenge of uniting the club’s playing roster, bringing more junior players into the fold, & getting some continuity into the playing fixtures. He succeeds Adam Roles-Middlehurst after just 1yr at the helm & paid tribute to the outgoing Captain ‘Adam has done a good job in difficult circumstances’ he said, adding ‘hopefully, we can now build on the foundations he has set & move onwards & upwards. This is an honour for me & I will give it my best shot to bring success to my home club’. Frith’s Vice Captain is the popular lock forward Sam Whitaker, who has been the line out caller for the past few seasons, & the Club are exciting to see what the duo can achieve.

‘Price-less’ innings topples Millhouses Stocksbridge 1st XI welcomed top of the table Millhouses to Lucas Wheels Bracken Moor, a game which looked set to be a cracker.

Skipper Andy Hibbert yet again won the toss and elected to field first. Vice skipper Jake Vickers struck the early blow removing the Millhouses opener with the score 2-1. A good opening spell from Vickers and Hibbert senior restricted the score and got the 1st XI off to a positive start. Vickers picking up two wickets and Hibbert one, to leave the score 22-3 with the table toppers needing to fight back. Joe Hibbert came into the attack and bowled with control. He picked up the important wicket of the Millhouses number five batsmen who was beginning to look the difference at the crease. Hibbert junior was backed up from the other end by Jack Newton and the pair fought back for the 1st XI. Hibbert junior picked up two wickets from his 13 overs, a good effort from him. However it was Newton who was pick of the bowlers picking up four wickets from his change of end, a great spell from him and much needed for the 1st XI at the back end of the Millhouses innings. Millhouses we’re bowled out for 178. After a great chase against Higham the week before, the 1st knew that the same effort was needed again.

Millhouses Works CC 178 all out (J Newton 4-35, J Vickers 3-44) Stocksbridge 1st 182-5 (M Price 52, J Newton 41, Joe Hibbert 41*) Stocksbridge won by 5 wickets

Matt Price and Ben Cherry took to the crease and the pair got the 1st XI off to a flyer. The wicket was playing well and both batsmen got value for their shots. Price was more of the aggressor. Cherry was removed for a well made 28 after a brilliant opening stand of 73 with Price. Price continued his well made innings and led from the front. He brought up his 50 with a well timed four through the leg side. However he was removed shortly after to a standing ovation. Jack Newton and Joe Hibbert were at the crease and the pair began to rebuild the innings and soak up the pressure from the Millhouses spinners. Newton was his normal destructive self, while Hibbert dug in and anchored from the other end. In difficult conditions, the pair put on 40 before Newton was removed for 41. Hibbert then began to move up a gear and he was well supported by Jon Pickford before I run cost Pickford his wicket. Hibbert, once again was the man for the job to see the 1st XI home as he hit three boundaries in an over to see them home. Hibbert finishing on a well made 41 not out. All in all a superb all round performance from the 1st XI to end Millhouses winning start to the campaign. The 1st XI travel to Whiston Forge this Saturday.

SHEFFIELD tasted defeat in the Premiership for the first time this season as they were beaten 54-36 at Wolverhampton. The Tru Plant Tigers suffered a second half collapse in the West Midlands on the first real disappointing night this term. It certainly didn’t look like it would turn out that way at the mid-point of the meeting when things were level after eight heats. Tobiasz Musielak and Kyle Howarth registered heat advantages in their first two outings

before a 5-1 from Craig Cook and Connor Mountain tied the scores at 24-24. But the hosts reeled off seven successive race winners to beat the Tigers for a second time this year after their narrow League Cup victory at Owlerton earlier this month. And having already shown their capabilities around the Monmore Green circuit earlier in the campaign, that added to the frustrations of team manager Simon Stead. “They were better than us.

“We just couldn’t find the set-up and it was one of those nights. “In general we all struggled a bit; Tobi still isn’t happy but scored a few points and Connor sort of did his bit at reserve, but we just struggled as a team. “I can’t put my finger on it but will we come back better? We have to and that’s what we’ll try to do.” The two sides do battle once again when the Tigers are next in action with the teams meeting at Owlerton on Thursday, June 9 (7.30).

Kai first at final Road League Running for Penistone, Kai Sunman finished in first place at the fourth and final South Yorkshire Road League event which was hosted at Penistone.

In the men’s over50 category Shaun Dimelow had a strong run to finish in first place in a time of 30-13. Martin Ball claimed third place in the same age category in a time of 30-30.

The undulating five mile route started in Penistone and headed out towards Oxspring before looping back to Penistone.

In the men’s over40 category Andrew Heppenstall claimed third place in 2934.

Kai (pictured) had a good lead at the half way point but the descent back to Penistone allowed some of the runners to close the gap, his strength on the final hill allowed him to finish with a comfortable gap ahead of second place. Kai’s time was 27-22.

Sarah Walch had an amazing run to finish the Hardmoors 110. The 110 mile route starts in Filey and finishes in Helmsley. Sarah completed the challenge in just over 32 hours.
