Fox Valley Store Supports Fun Run Following a two year break the Penistone fun run returns this weekend and has the backing once again from Fox Valley’s department store, Sandersons.

The fun run raises money in memory of Penistone brothers Jack and Paul Sykes and is due to take place on the 12th June kickstarting the mayors parade. It’s the fifth year that the 2km run has been staged on the trails around Penistone to help raise funds for the Heads Together (Barnsley) Charitable Trust. The charity was set up in memory of the brothers who tragically lost their lives in a house fire started by their father when they were just 12 and 9. More than 250 people usually take part in the run raising vital funds that assist families in need of respite care and specialist equipment.

FAMILY TO UNDERTAKE 100 MILE CHALLENGE FOR MILITARY CHARITY The Williams family from Penistone love doing things together, so it seemed only right that nine-year-old Molly would join her dad in his fundraising challenge for the Royal Air Forces Association. Molly has spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), so despite not being able to walk, she is joining her dad Julian as he attempts to walk 100 miles in 24 hours. She will be taking part using her Duet Tandem Wheelchair bicycle, with the help of her mum May, sister Anya (11) and brother Edmund (7). They will complete 84 laps of the athletics track: one lap for every night Molly has spent in critical care. Talking of her condition, Molly said: “SMA is a form of motor neurone disease, and I am a full-time wheelchair user. I know I will never walk, stand or even sit without support. I have already had two ten-hour surgeries at Sheffield Children’s Hospital. I have had my spine straightened with metal rods, both hips reconstructed and more emergency admissions than I can remember. Sometimes I need a special mask-and-air to help me breathe, and lots of other kit to get me through each day.”

This year’s event will start at the Penistone Showground at 10am and runners are encouraged to dress up as a local superhero to celebrate the key workers that kept the community going throughout the pandemic. Sandersons Department Store has donated the medals which will be presented to all the finishers by Jack and Paul’s Mum Claire Throssell and television journalist and presenter, Christine Talbot. Claire said: “The support from the community we have had over the previous events has been fantastic and we are hoping for the same turnout this year to raise as much money as possible for this fantastic charity.

“We’ve suggested runners dress up as keyworkers to show our gratitude to those local superheroes who have kept our town

running throughout the past couple of years. “We’d like to say a big thank you to Sandersons for supporting the event again this year and providing the medals for all the runners.” Rebecca Dransfield from Sandersons said: “We are delighted to be supporting this fantastic community event in memory of two very special boys. We hope the event raises lots of money for Heads Together and we wish all runners the very best on Sunday.” Online entries cost £5 individually and £10 for a family entry of up to five people. You can register through the following link https://racebest.com/races/ hxuw2. Entries will also be taken on the day, the event starts at 10am with registration open from 9:30am.
