Children receive £50 food vouchers this summer Families with children that are eligible for benefit related free school meals will receive a free £50 voucher to help with the cost of food over the summer holidays.
Sheffield City Council recognises that many families are being hit hard by the costof-living crisis, with summer holidays being a particularly difficult time due to extra costs for food and energy. The vouchers will be funded through the government’s Household Support Fund, set up to allow local councils to help those in their communities who need it most. People do not need to apply to the scheme. Those who are eligible for the voucher will receive a letter from the council with details on how to redeem their voucher next week. There
is also a short ‘how to’ video here.
Leader of the Council, Councillor Terry Fox, said: “We are continuing with the food voucher scheme this summer, as we have done with every school holiday since the pandemic began, because we know that families need this to carry on at the minute as the cost-ofliving surges. “Keeping children happy, safe and healthy is our priority and by using the Household Support Fund once again to support our most vulnerable families we will help make sure no child goes hungry this summer. “We hope that the £50 food supplement vouchers will help ease some of the financial burden faced by families and allow them to enjoy the holidays to-
gether without worrying about how they will put food on the table.” Those who claim income assessed Early Years Support (2-4yr olds) and young people leaving their care setting (Care Leavers) are also eligible, meaning 32,000 children across Sheffield will receive vital support to help with the rising cost of living this summer. If families are facing financial hardship, there is free advice and support available at www. citizensadvicesheffield.org.uk or by calling on 0808 278 7820. Improving Angram Bank park
‘Exceptional Sheffield’
Sheffield City Council and Ecclesfield Parish Council have been working together to deliver improvements to Angram Bank park in High Green to make the site safer and more secure.
Earlier this year a new multi-use games area was installed at the site adding to the existing play facilities. This summer the council has installed additional security measures. These have included new railing and a height restrictor for the car park and placement of boulders around the edge of the site. These will prevent vehicles driving onto the site and causing damage and disruption. Alongside the boulders, wild flower bulbs have been planted to improve both the appearance of the site and encourage biodiversity. These measures have been jointly funded with significant support from Ecclesfield Parish Council. Alan Hooper, chair of the North Local Area Committee and an Ecclesfield Parish Councillor told Look Local ‘I am delighted that the City Council and Parish Council have been able to work together to deliver this project. We are committed to improving parks facilities for our local communities’
“I don’t think I realised when I was growing up just how exceptional Sheffield is. Once you move south you realise how much flatter, blander and more crowded the rest of the country is. I also love the way it’s halfway between a village and a metropolis…and bumping into your neighbours wherever you are.” Born in Canda but raised in Sheffield and awarded honorary degree at University of Sheffield in 2015, former BBC newsreader Emily Maitlis was interviewed for University of Sheffield ‘Your University’ Alumni magazine. School Celebrates “Good” Rating Ecclesfield School has been praised by Ofsted for being a “friendly, welcoming school” and providing a “wide range of subjects”. Ofsted found Ecclesfield School to be a “good” school following its two-day inspection in May. This was the school’s first routine inspection since converting to an academy with Minerva Learning Trust in 2017. Headteacher of Ecclesfield School Richard Walkden said: “We are delighted that Ofsted has recognised the hard work and grit of our school and our Trust. The last few years have been challenging but we have pulled together and not only have we survived, but we have thrived.” He continued: “The report is a true reflection of the great work currently going on at Ecclesfield School and Minerva Learning Trust. We have all pulled together to ensure we are offering the best, most effective experience we can for our young people. However, we are not complacent, and we will continue raising our standards. Our report is now an integral asset to our School Improvement Strategy and will assist us as we work towards becoming an Outstanding school”. Ofsted attended the non-selective mixed secondary school for two days in May. They conducted their inspection by assessing lessons, viewing workbooks and lesson plans. Ofsted also spoke to the staff, and students and surveyed parents to understand the community views. Following this thorough investigation of performance, it was agreed that Ecclesfield was a good school in all areas. In their findings, Ofsted noted that “Pupils are kept safe and learn well in this friendly, welcoming school. Four core values are evident in everything that happens: work hard, be kind, aim high and show grit. Pupils are keen to do well. They enjoy sharing their knowledge and their achievements”.

Penistone wildlife group calls for action over reservoir duckling deaths Wildlife lovers are calling for action to prevent ducklings getting trapped in a reservoir spillway and dying, writes BBC Yorkshire.

People living near Scout Dike Reservoir, near Penistone, say the birds are dying from exhaustion as they attempt to escape the waterway. A ramp put up by one resident to help the animals was taken down by Yorkshire Water due to safety concerns. The firm said it is working to fix the issue but safety and the "functioning of the reservoir" come first. Wildlife enthusiast Alan Parkin, who put up the ramp, said he one recent visit he said he found eight ducklings trapped in the spillway, swimming around a dead baby duck.

Carefest II
“After the success of last year and having been able to see how much our dedicated carers were in need of a chance to blow off some steam, we had to put Carefest on again! 2022 has finally seen us wave goodbye to restrictions and the worst of how the pandemic impacted our lives, but the sacrifices and incredible dedication of our frontline staff shouldn’t be forgotten. Those in the healthcare industry and emergency services continue to put themselves under immense pressure every day to provide for those in need and, now we aren’t clapping for carers, we should show our gratitude more than ever.” With live music, food and drinks being served throughout the day, Carefest II’s real family-fun feel
will be another much-needed celebration for Dan’s carers – called Angels – as well as anyone else working in the sector and in frontline services. And what’s more, the event is completely free of charge for those workers. Kay Radford, the General Manager of Visiting Angels South Yorkshire, believes it is events such as these that highlight the need for further industry-wide recognition of carers. “Visiting Angels puts its carers before anyone else. And it’s through events like Carefest we can show how proud we are as a community and industry to have such exceptional and dedicated people representing our values and delivering our services. We hope that days like these are the catalyst for further industrywide recognition of carers and frontline staff as, although it’s an important step towards showing carers how much they’re valued, there are plenty of employers out there who don’t put carer wellbeing at the heart of their businesses like we do. But for now, we can’t wait to have a day of celebrating in the sun with great food, drinks and live music!” For more information about Visiting Angels, visit www.visitingangels.co.uk/southyorks/

How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These QHHG WR EH ¿OOHG LQ ZLWK QXPEHUV WKDW complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.

Rats and rubbish I’ve also been thinking about the letter last week about the increase in the number (and bravery!) of rats in certain areas of Deepcar. I agree with the writers’ comments about bird feeding and seeds being spilled which encourage pests, and we need to make sure that any surplus rubbish is disposed of properly to help keep them under control. I know that the council has increased funding for street cleaning but clearly more needs to be done. Finances are increasingly tight as government funding is cut, but as a local councillor I will always champion extra resources into our Streetscene and environment. We’re fortunate in the Stocksbridge & Upper Don ward, to have a household waste recycling centre so nearby and Labour councillors put forward an amendment to the council’s budget to increase the summer opening hours of our site to seven days a week, and for longer. It’s this sort of prevention work that we need to do more of. We need to make recycling as easy and convenient for people as possible. There should never be an excuse for fly-tipping in any circumstances but making the household waste site open longer will surely help tackle this. The current exceptional weather is a signal that our world is warming – by using our local waste centre we can all help save the energy and harmful emissions produced in making new materials, as part of our city’s journey to Net Zero. You can be sure that I will always champion our waste recycling centre and that rather than closing, like in some local authorities, ours are actually opening for longer. SY MAYOR STEPS IN TO KEEP SCHOOL BUSES GOING • South Yorkshire’s Mayor proposes funding to protect at-risk school buses. • South Yorkshire is at risk of losing of a third of its bus network in the autumn. • Commercially-run school bus services are among the routes at risk. South Yorkshire’s Mayor Oliver Coppard is stepping in to protect school buses at risk from brutal cuts to the bus network. The region is facing the loss of a third of its bus network, after government funding to help operators get through the pandemic comes to an end in October. Commerciallyoperated school bus routes are among those at risk. At a forthcoming board meeting of the Mayoral Combined Authority (MCA), the Mayor will propose using part of the MCA’s budget to keep those school buses going. South Yorkshire’s Mayor Oliver Coppard said, ‘We are facing the immediate threat of the biggest and most damaging cuts for a generation, and sadly school buses are among those at risk of being pulled.
‘South Yorkshire’s roads are already among the most dangerous in the UK for children. So unless we want even more cars on the school run - not only increasing traffic and making our air more toxic, but also potentially making it harder for many parents and carers to get to work - a reliable school bus service is vital. ‘While we wait for the money and the powers to fix our broken bus system, I’ve promised to do everything I can to keep our service going. ‘So I’m recommending that local leaders approve our plan of using part of our budget reserve to keep these buses going in the face of brutal cuts.’ School buses which carry children who get a zero fare bus pass from their local authority are not affected by the cuts, as these routes are already funded by SYMCA. The routes under threat are the ones which also carry children paying 80p fares.
The Mayor is proposing that up to £5.1m is used to protect these services over the next two years. Local leaders will have the change to approve the funding at the MCA board meeting on July 25th. SYMCA lost out in the most recent round of government bus funding. Mayor Oliver Coppard has called on the government to provide emergency funding to keep the service going while SYMCA is in the process of seeing if it can take buses back into public control through the franchising process. Most buses in South Yorkshire are run by private companies. Under the current system these companies are free to decide where and when they will run services. When bus companies withdraw services – as they are expected to do in October when government funding stops – SYMCA can pay other companies to run the route. However, in the most recent tender process, a number of routes received no bids from operators.

‘Active’ School double award A primary school in north Sheffield is celebrating a double award. High Green Primary School have scooped awards for being active and singing! Winners of the Leadership Award for an Active school 2022 The whole school have focused on being more active, to improve physical and mental health. Head Teacher Diane Smale told Look Local “We altered the school day to give us more time to create longer breaks and purchased a whole raft of equipment and resources that children could use. We have widened our extra opportunities to include fishing, horse riding, ice skating as well as the more traditional sports of cricket, tag rugby, cross country and football. Fishing has been a particular favourite: the children have loved it. We have been featured in the Angling Times, BBC Radio Talk Sport Fisherman’s Blues, done adverts for ITV4 Monster Carp, Matt Godfrey’s vlogs (Three Times World Champion), as well as being coached by Matt Frankie Gianoncelli (England Youth
Champion) and received tackle and equipment from Guru.” Feedback from the children has been really positive. I have made more friends and I have more fun at break times. I have more friendships because me and my friends play with the jump sacks on Thursday because it’s fun. I have noticed in myself that I have been more active and I have fun playing with my friends. My favourite day is Friday team games day. My mood has improved because I am not fighting with my sister anymore. My friendships with my friends are improving. I love active breaks. I feel fitter, braver and stronger!
Winners of the Raymond English Youth Award (School Choir) Raymond English was a treasured member of the Bolsterstone Male Voice Choir for many, many years. To keep his memory and
inspiration alive, his family and friends created this award in his memory. The aim is to recognise and reward young musicians for inspiring others and continuing his legacy. Diane Smales said “We were really proud to be chosen by the organising panel of Fox Valley Music Festival, led by Hilary Osbourne. They particularly loved the way the children are so enthusiastic, clearly love singing together and how inclusive the choir is. Our choir, led by Mrs Lucy Harding, is made up of children from all ages; from 4 to 11 and it was amazing to get them back to performing in public, after the disruption of ‘covid’. We have performed at the Fox Valley Music Festival, the Chesterfield’s Gotta Sing Festival at the Pomegranate Theatre and the annual HGPS Music Festival. The children have all worked so hard, putting in regular weekly practices and attending events. We are all very proud of the children; they really are an inspiration!”
Festival of Cycling returns The Festival of Cycling makes its return this weekend [23rd and 24th July] as Trek Bicycle at Fox Valley gear up to host a series of demos, scheduled store rides, kids cycling sessions and much more. The festival aims to get people out cycling and so Saturday will see a jam-packed schedule of guided bike rides around the local area with the return of the Steel Valley Ride on Saturday, which has been on hold since 2019 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The ride is a 31-mile route with technical descents and grueling climbs and anyone interested in taking part in the challenge should visit store to find out more and sign up. There will also be an extensive program of ride outs from store on Sunday including road, gravel, mountain bike and E-bike.
Andy Cook, store manager at Trek, commented: “We can’t wait to host this weekend’s festival of cycling, it is set to be an amazing weekend with plenty to do and see whether you’re a keen cyclist or completely new to the sport”. Cyclists will be able to test ride the newest mountain bikes and electric mountain bikes now available in store and there will be special ‘Little Bikers’ kids cycling sessions held across the weekend 9am until 3pm. The centre’s many food outlets and restaurants will provide the perfect opportunity for cyclists to refuel after a long day of cycling. The festival is an initiative coordinated and ran by joint partners Trek and Steel Valley Project and will take place Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th July.

by Goodwin while Defalco forced an impressive save from Kelly with a near post header to show how the Steels were looking likely to get a goal.
Emley took the lead in the first half when a long ball found Iwryah Gooden who duly finished. Stocksbridge levelled before the end off the half when a trialist scored from the spot. In the second half, Stocksbridge took the lead through a powerful finish from Luca Defalco. Emley unfortunately got a late equaliser when Joe Jagger lobbed the trialist goalkeeper in the 89th minute.
Emley should have had the lead though. A long ball went through to an Emley forward and he was initially denied by an impressive save from the trialist goalkeeper. The ball fell back to him with the goal at his mercy but some how he would blast the ball over.

Stocksbridge would then be able to go up the other end and score. After putting intense pressure on the Emley defence, a Steels ball found Defalco in the box who then hit a powerful finish in order to give Stocksbridge the lead.

Emley had the better of the game but struggled to break down a stubborn Steels defence which saw Mitch Langton and Charlie Oglesby play together in defence for the first time in Stocksbridge yellow. But eventually they did. A long ball was sent over the top and head over the top of the Steels defence. Gooden latched onto it and would finish past Davison-Hale to give Emley the lead. Stocksbridge were able to get one back though before the end of the first half. The trialist winger broke into the box from the left and this time, the referee was given no

doubt as the defender took him out with a sliding tackle. The trialist left-back, who also scored at Handsworth, stepped up and was able to tuck it away well despite the keeper Sam Kelly getting a hand to it. This meant Stocksbridge were level going into the half. Once again, Stocksbridge had a completely different side going into the second half, with only Ross Goodwin staying on, though he shifted back to central midfield
after playing up front in the first half. Emley started off the brighter with Alex Metcalfe’s position from a narrow angle forcing the trialist goalkeeper to punch it away at the near post. After this, Stocksbridge took control of the game and looked to be the better team. The front three of Clark Greaves, Luca Defalco and a different trialist winger caused a lot of problems for the Emley defence. Greaves’ cross was slammed wide
However, they’d be punished for not killing the game off. A long ball from Kelly went over the Stocksbridge defence and Jagger was able to get through, lob the goalkeeper and grab the draw for Emley. While it was certainly an impressive performance in the second half for the Steels, they may be disappointed not to have the win.

League Team Good prePromoted at season for the Golf Club church
Stocksbridge Golf Club League Team celebrated guaranteed promotion with a match in hand after trouncing Bondhay GC 8-0 at home. It wasn't just the clean sweep that made the victory so emphatic, each team player won their matches by significant margins. Ben Stringer won by 8&7, Danny Costello by 6&5, and Liam O'Sullivan and Andrew Finney both won by 4&3. The team's remaining match is away to Doncaster Town Moor GC and a win there would give them a good chance of finishing the season as Division 5 champions. Team Captain, Liam O'Sullivan, said "this is a great victory for all the lads who have played for the team this season." The League Team players - Luke Bisatt, Craig Batty, Peter Finney, Jack Carnall, Andrew Finney, Ben Stringer, Liam O'Sullivan and Danny Costello - are pictured with Club Captain John Moss. John said after the impressive victory that "on behalf of the Golf Club I would like to offer heartfelt congratulations to the Team for such a successful season."

Stocksbridge did us all proud on the day reaching the final against a strong Aston Hall side. Batting second they took the game right down to the last over but eventually getting agonizingly pipped at the post by just three runs. It has been a massively successful season for all the Under 9 juniors involved and at times we have fielded up to six teams with over 35 kids involved.
