Football’s Coming Home… to Sheffield Cathedral As the eyes of the footballing world focus on Sheffield and Bramall Lane for the first semifinal of the 2022 UEFA European Women's Football Championship there is another Sheffield venue playing an important role in the success of the tournament. On Wednesday 27 July Sheffield Cathedral is partnering with UEFA and The FA to host the UEFA European Women's Football Conference. Representatives from UEFA, from the tournament’s organising committee, from the English Football Association and from all the host cities will be coming to the Cathedral to celebrate the championships, to talk about their experiences of being a host city and to share good practice ahead of the next tournament in 2025. During the conference guests will be entertained by a small ensemble from the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and a community choir.

Green award for school Royd Nursery Infant School have been successful in achieving the Eco-Schools Green Flag with Distinction Award. The Eco-Schools Green Flag is an internationally recognised award and celebrates excellence in environmental action and learning. Class teacher and Eco Team Leader, Miss Rawding commented, “I work closely with Mrs Heathcote who has a team of children known as our ‘Eco Warriors’ to launch campaigns for the whole school to take part in. Our Eco project empowers and motivates the children at Royd to drive change for a more sustainable planet and raises environmental awareness in our school and local community.” After achieving The Green Flag Award in 2020, children at Royd have been working determinedly towards their renewal applica-
tion and are thrilled to have been awarded The Green Flag with Distinction Award.
The Green Flag with Distinction Award is the highest possible level that a school can be awarded. It gives added recognition to those Eco schools who go a little further with their Eco projects. Mr Sly, Deputy Headteacher added “Royd is committed to adding value to our children’s lives. If we are able to give them the opportunity to lead change within their school then hopefully this will positively impact them at home as well as in their wider community. I am delighted that staff and children’s commitment to the project has been recognised, as their passion and efforts are admirable. Teaching Assistant, Mrs Heathcote who also leads the Eco Team commented “Our Eco Team have
worked on many projects this year including ‘Switch Off Fortnight’, ‘Waste Week’ and ‘Walk To School Week’. Children know the importance of saving energy, carbon emissions and other valuable resources where possible. They actively monitor whether rooms that aren’t being used at playtimes and lunchtimes have things such as computer screens and lights turned off when they aren’t being used. The children even had a clipboard and checklist for each classroom so they could report their findings. They really enjoyed trying to catch the teachers out and telling them that they needed to turn things off. It creates a positive culture around school as well as healthy competition as each class wants to save the most amount of energy”.
“The tournament is not just about football on the pitch. It’s also about giving the fans a good time, helping them to visit the host cities safely and to enjoy the culture of the host nation. Having the conference in the city which is home to the world’s first football club Sheffield FC, and in one of its most iconic venues just adds to this” said Bev Ward, Senior Host City Manager for the UEFA
Women’s 2022. “Being able to share everything we’ve learnt with our friends at UEFA is really important because we want the tournament to have legacy for women’s football and future championships.” Sheffield United supporter The Very Reverend Abigail Thompson, Dean of Sheffield is delighted the Cathedral is hosting the conference. “It’s been wonderful to welcome international guests wearing their nation’s colours into the Cathedral over the past month. Few cities are passionate about their football in quite the way that Sheffield is, and it’s been great to share in the excitement of this tournament and enjoy all the good humour and friendly rivalry… and I’m delighted to see that the mighty Lionesses are doing us proud! Hosting a conference of such significance is a wonderful opportunity to show everyone how beautiful the Cathedral is, and how versatile it can be as a venue for so many different cultural events. We are a place for all people and a place to celebrate and explore new possibilities, which is exactly what this conference is all about.” Sheffield Cathedral will be closed to visitors until 2:30pm on 27 Wednesday. The Book of Common Prayer Holy Communion will take place in the Chapel of the Holy Spirit at 10:30.
