Bus companies are set to make alterations to some South York shire services from Sunday 2 Oc tober in response to government funding changes and changing travel patterns.

Many services will see route or timetable revisions, with some services withdrawn.

The changes come after Govern ment announced an extension to its Bus Recovery Grant funding on 19 August, provided to bus com panies throughout the pandemic to protect bus routes. Despite the emergency support package now running for a further six months, from October 2022 until March 2023, some bus companies have taken the decision to remove ser vices due to a shortage of drivers.

Additional funding from the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Au thority for bus contracts has been offered to bus companies to run as many routes as possible. It follows a recent call for communities to help shape how the region’s public money is used to support buses.

South Yorkshire’s Mayor Oliver Coppard has again called on the Government to provide a proper rescue plan for the region’s bus es, as stop-start budget setting prompts further service cuts from 2 October.

Speaking out about the changes to bus services, South Yorkshire’s Mayor Oliver Coppard said:

“The Government’s stop-start bus funding fiasco is directly responsi ble for this slashing of bus services by operators. It is a disaster for our community in South Yorkshire and we have been warning about this for months.

“With bus operators just walk ing away from some contracts – including commercial school bus services and key community routes – I have stepped in and used South Yorkshire’s financial reserves to try and plug the gap. But despite this, in some instanc

es, the bus companies still won’t run the routes.

“We should be under no illusions: this is just a short-term fix.

“That’s why I’ll continue to fight for the funding and the powers to fix this broken bus system.

“Because every one of us has the right to buses that allow us to travel to work and see our families and friends without using a car. It’s a fundamental issue of social justice and I will do everything I can - with the resources I have - to fix it.”

In response to the news, Cllr Ter ry Fox, Leader of Sheffield City Council, said: “Once again the people of Sheffield and the sur rounding region have been hung out to dry by Government, allow ing private transport providers to reap the benefits whilst the public pick up the costs when the servic es are not profitable.

Arctic Monkeys coming home

Sheffield’s own Arctic Monkeys today an nounced that they will perform two dates at Hillsborough Park as part of their UK tour in 2023, with tickets go ing on sale this week.

Cllr Martin Smith, Chair of the Economic Development and Skills Policy Committee, said: “The Arctic Monkeys playing live at Hillsbor ough Park is an absolute dream for Sheffield. The band are coming back to their roots where it all began, the areas they reference in many of their most-loved songs that only local folk can fully and so fondly ap preciate.

The license for this event was granted in August 2021, following the usual public notice period, setting out the terms of the request and giving residents the op portunity to comment.

As with other events taking place at Hillsbor ough Park the timing of the event has been planned so that music is finished by 10.30pm and only the main park field will be used for the event, not the whole site

All surplus income generated through the booking of this event will be invested back into the Hillsborough Park charitable account for the benefit of local people.

Cllr Richard Williams, Chair of the Communi ties, Parks and Leisure Policy Committee, said: “As local lads themselves the Arctic Monkeys were very keen to play in such an iconic loca tion in terms of their music and their roots and they are passionate about coming back and giving back to the area.

“It is really good news that all surplus income generated from hire of the land will be invested back into Hillsborough Park. This will contribute to future improvements that can be enjoyed by many people for many years to come. For the two days while the Arc tic Monkeys are home, I think we can all feel very

proud to have the band back on local soil.”

The gigs are on 9 & 10 June next year.

Tickets will be on sale from 9am on Friday 30 September.

FRIDAY 4TH NOVEMBER

We are delighted to be working with the Sheffield born author and SAS veteran Des Powell for a very special evening at our Fox Valley restaurant.

Tickets are £40 and include a welcome glass of prosecco and three course dinner.

Des will talk about his fascinating life as well as opening the floor to a Q and A session with the audience. Guests are also welcome to bring their own copy of Bravo Three Zero to be signed. We will have a limited number of copies to purchase on the evening.

25 years teaching together

Two teachers at a school in north Sheffield for pupils who need con ductive education are celebrating 25 years together at the School.

Angie Rose, 63 and Joanne Joseph 60 both teaching (conductor) as sistants celebrated, somewhat unex pectedly, their achievement togeth er with a surprise presentation at a recent staff meeting.

The pair, who both live in Chapel town were also presented with a ‘beautiful’ bouquet of flowers and an afternoon tea at Whitley Hall. Students in their class also made the dedicated Conductor Assistants a ‘lovely’ card.

Angie told Look Local

“We started working at Paces School together in September 1997, on the day the school first opened in High Green. We became very good friends during our 25 years and are still as close now. We have seen many changes at Paces over the years, and have worked with some lovely people making some amazing memories.”

“We are excited to be part of the move to a new building soon.”

Paces school is soon to be moving to Thorncliffe Hall on the Thorncliffe Industrial estate in Chapeltown.

Angie told Look Local

“There have been lots of ups and downs, highs and lows during the

25 years. There have been many staff and students that have come and gone during that time. But myself and Joanne have been a constant for each other during all the times of change. We are well known at work for chatting to each other too much and often get told off for it, but this is part of the glue that sticks us to Paces. ”

Conductive Education is a system of integrated education and therapy which can help children with neuro logical movement problems. Whilst cerebral palsy is the most common condition there are also many chil dren with genetic disorders, global developmental delay and other con ditions who may benefit from CE.

DONCASTER SHEFFIELD AIRPORT TO CLOSE

A review has now concluded and DSA will begin winding down the provision of aviation services during the week commencing Monday 31 October 2022.

South Yorkshire's Mayor Oliver Coppard said: "I’m devastated by today’s announcement by Peel and an gry about the impact it will have on our communi ties. Most importantly, there are hundreds of people across Doncaster and South Yorkshire who will now be frightened for their future.

The closure of Doncaster Sheffield Airport is the result of narrow minded failings of fat cat business owners, GMB has said.

Councillor Terry Fox, Leader of Sheffield City Coun cil said:

"To say this is unwelcome news is an understatement – partners across South Yorkshire have made a mas sive effort to get Peel to consider alternatives and this is a significant blow, including to the airport employ ees as the nation faces a cost of living crisis.

THURSDAY

2022,

We look forward to welcoming Y5 and Y6 pupils and their families to our open evening. There will be opportunities to tour the school, meet staff and students, and to find out about the learning and care at Stocksbridge High.

Mr Ireland, the headteacher, will share the values and ethos of our school, present information on our success and lay out our vision for the future.

There is no need to book a place and we hope that many families can attend from within and beyond our catchment. In the meantime, our website has a lot of information about the school, www.stocksbridgehigh.co.uk

DEATH OF A LOVED ONE FOLLOWING MEDICAL NEGLIGENCE

Losing a loved one can be dif ficult but knowing the death of a loved one was caused because of someone else’s carelessness, amplifies this devastation, and leaves you wondering what you could have done to change things.

If medical negligence results in the death of a loved one, then the medical professional or institution responsible can not only be held accountable, but relatives can claim com pensation for the loss they have suffered.

Cases often vary, but exam ples of medical negligence include delayed surgery, de layed diagnosis ofcancer, and medication errors.

There are various types of compensation that can be claimed following the death of a loved one which can make the process complex and lengthy. Some of the items of compensation that can be claimed include:

1. Funeral Expenses: Families of the deceased loved one can claim com pensation for certain funeral expenses incurred by the de ceased loved one’s estate.

2. Bereavement Award: The current bereavement award under legislation in England and Wales is set at £15,120. The deceased’s spouse or civil partner can apply for this award to com pensate purely for the loss of the loved one.

3. Claims for Dependency

The reflects the loss fami lies may suffer following the death of a loved one, spe cifically in relation to the de ceased’s income and/or pro vision of services

4. General & Special Damages

This encompasses claims for the pain and suffering expe rienced by the deceased be

tween the negligent act and death. The Judicial College Guidelines and case law are essential when determining the appropriate award.

This is an area which is wide and complex, and therefore it is important that you have a legal team on your side who you can trust and who have the relevant experience to guide you through the proc ess as compassionately as possible.

Should you wish to seek legal advice following the negli gent death of a loved one, please contact our friendly legal team on 01924 387110.

Furniture Clearance Warehouse Due to Close Its Doors

After 23 years of trading

Furniture Clearance Warehouse is closing its doors. The owner, David Perkins has successfully run the business for over two decades, but is now ready for a change.

Former Bradfield School teacher, Andy Tiplady, together with his son Joshua (14) decided to take on Mt Kilimanjaro to raise money to fight knife crime, after his own former student was stabbed and died, just a few miles away in 2018:

a lovely lad and had just turned professional boxer, no one could touch him in his weight category. He was visiting his girlfriend one afternoon and had an altercation with some youths en route, and was fatally stabbed. Far too many young people believe they’re safer if they carry a knife, but the tragic reality is that carrying knives is making our streets more dangerous. Kids as young as 13 are being stabbed now, and yet too many believe that by carrying a blade they’ll be bet ter defended, which just isn’t true. We need to get knives off the street, and we need to reach today’s youth with a positive message, and with

activities for them to get involved in and feel part of. We need to give them alternative choices and paths to follow. ”

Ascending Tanzania’s 5,895m dor mant volcano over 8 days, camp ing without running water, with no showers, and walking over 53 miles wasn’t the main challenge however, as Joshua explains:

“No climber should assume they’ll make it to the top. The biggest chal lenge is oxygen, or rather the lack of it. High Altitude sickness is a dan gerous condition caused by the body not adjusting to the massive reduc tion of oxygen in the air, which at

the 5,895m peak of Kilimanjaro is at 50%, compared to what most of us are used to in Sheffield. People who fail to acclimatise will get seri ously ill, and failing to come down the mountain will result in death. We witnessed that reality with one of our trekking team members, but thanks to the fast footwork of local porters that person is still alive to day.”

Together they raised over £2,500 for Always an Alternative, and having returned from Mount Kilimanjaro they look forward to sharing sto ries from the mountain during an inspirational afternoon on Sunday

2nd October at Bushfire Basecamp, 427 Halifax Road, Grenoside.

Promising to be an interesting cou ple of hours, multi-award-winning advocate for change, Anthony Ola seinde of Always an Alternative will also present stories from the work he is doing amongst the youth, and show how the donations are mak ing a difference.

7 Friends of St Nicholas’ Church, High Bradfield,

Local countryside management charity the Steel Valley Project has successfully launched a series of short guided walks aimed at reconnecting people with nature and their community after the re strictions of recent years.

The first event was run in con junction with the Upper Don Trail Trust and was ably led by their chairman Simon Ogden. It was fantastic to see a large group of 27 people being brought together by the event; learning about the history of Deepcar and the future plans for the Upper Don Trail as well as forming new connections in the local community.

Richard Saunders, Environmen tal Project Officer at the Steel Valley Project who designed the project and will lead some of the remaining walks said “It is great to be able to offer a series of short

guided walks aimed at people who perhaps otherwise wouldn’t have the opportunity to get out and about. I’m really looking for ward to meeting more people on the walks that are to come around Pot House Wood and Glen Howe Park.”

The next walk is planned for Tues day 4th October at 2pm, meet ing at the entrance to Pot House Woods on Alpine Road. For full details please visit the Steel Valley Project Facebook events page or call on 0114 283 0880.

The series of 7 walks have been kindly funded by the Aviva Com munity Fund with the walks be ing specifically designed to be short and easy so that anyone should be able to turn up and enjoy a gentle afternoon wander with a friendly group and knowl edgeable guide.

Proposed Investment Zones

I’ve always considered Great Britain to be a nation that strives to lead the way in terms of standards in every area, and this is something that makes me proud to be British. The talk of substantial deregulation in order to achieve growth isn’t something that I support. I strongly believe that in Britain we should be able to hold up developments, products, policies and people to the highest standards while achieving sustainable growth.

This inevitably means regulation and rules to prevent cowboys and chancers. I am seriously concerned that the 38 proposed investment zones (including areas in South Yorkshire) will lead to the uncontrolled development of large areas of our countryside.

Dear Miriam Cates

A long short time ago I just about remember ( unless it was all a bad dream) that you were one of the last of the crew to mutiny because, you said, Captain Jolly Johnson had such a fine electoral mandate. So now that Liz Lurch Right and the likes of Jacob Cream Crackers Rees-Mogg are steering the ship after being voted in by a little more than half of roughly zero percent of the electorate are you going to resign? Please.

If enough Tory honourable members were honourable enough to do just that we would then get the chance to vote in a government that begins to mend this country where after twelve years of Tory cuts you can wait hours for an ambulance.

LAC meeting

The next Sheffield North Local Area Committee

Public Meeting will take place on Wednesday 5th October 2022, 18.00 - 20.00 at Ecclesfield Primary School, High Street. Ecclesfield, S35 9UD.

Please come along if you can - local Area Committees (LACs) are a great way for you to get involved in your local community and give you the opportunity to have a real say in local decision making.

There’s also chance to speak with your local councillors after the meeting.

You can book a place through Eventbrite, or just turn up on the night, you will be very welcome.

Any questions, please email NorthLAC@sheffield. gov.uk or phone 0114 205 359.

Worst buses

Complaint about massive service reduction to Stocksbridge: a far too early last bus, inadequate frequencies, crazy route.

What you are dumping on Stocksbridge bus users is the worst service in its modern history, and by some distance.

* A ridiculously early last bus (10.52pm) will kill off most if not all night-time outings to Sheffield.

* Just two per hour at maximum and just one in the evenings and Sundays is below the absolute minimum acceptable of three (and two, respectively), and is JUST ONE-THIRD of recent provision, and still half of what we have been left with after you knocked off three of the hourly services and cancelled about a third or more of the remainder, deliberately destroying any confidence in your SL 'tramlink' (ha!) services.

* The absurd dog-leg time-wasting route up the 1-in-3 hill that is the foot of Langsett Avenue, through 'traffic calmed' Wisewood Estate and down the wholly unsuitable narrow parked-carblocked Dykes Hall Road is untenable, and anyway a new bus route is scheduled to take over from the 57 to serve Wisewood and Wadsley through to Worrall and Oughtibridge. It is another insult to not reinstate a full valley-floor service to Pond Street.

Your massive service reduction appears to be a cynical exercise to obtain subsidy, justified by bus usage changes you brought about yourselves by making the SL1 / SL1A services unusable through constant cancellation. Commuters had no choice but to switch to the 57 because of regularly being left stranded for an hour at the Middlewood tram terminus.

My reaction: I'll be making more use of my electric bike to get around Deepcar/Stocksbridge. I may start sending taxi receipts to you in the form of an invoice.

Supertram Link bus

I had to laugh when I read the letter from Cllr’s Ridler and Grocutt as they seek to pass the blame of the loss of the Tramlink bus on the Tories. So let me ask them a question. Prior to the announcement on how many occasions have you attended meetings with either Stagecoach or the PTE where you have specifically raised the issue of the missing link and poor service? On how many occasions have you written to either on the same topic. Perhaps you would be kind enough to share the minutes and correspondence with readers as I am sure we would all love to see what our councillors have been doing whilst this shambles comes to a sad end. One thing I am certain of is that I can produce far more correspondence on this subject and I am just a member of the public not someone who is being paid to represent the public and in the case of Julie being paid extra to co-chair the transportation committee.

As for the Mayor I wrote to him on 28th May suggesting that he ought to start his tenure by examining this and other issues relating to Stagecoach and the PTE about their contempt for the traveling public before wasting time like his predecessor on reports that will gather dust. Guess what no reply.

As Florence M. so rightly says in her letter there is lots of new housing being built and traffic is already slow and likely to get worse and this will be made even worse by the withdrawal of the Tramlink bus.

What a pity our councillors and mayor are too busy playing politics to wake up to what is happening. I guess it won’t be long before they are calling for the A6102 to be made a dual carriageway or the railway reopened or the tram extended to serve stocksbridge or who knows a bus that will link with the tram at Middlewood to alleviate traffic congestion

Dodworth Miners Girls Soar With The Eagles

THiS Saturday was a very proud day for everyone in volved with the Dodworth Miners ARLFC youth setup. Two talented young girls playing with the Under 10s, Connie Saunders and Stocksbridge’s own Ash leigh Bebb were selected to play for Sheffield Eagles Girls Under 10s, in an exhi bition match at the Olympic Legacy Park in Sheffield.

The game took place in front of a big crowd, before the main event of the evening, the Women’s League 1 Playoff Semi-Final. The Sheffield Eagles Girls U10’s team put in a terrific performance against a well-organised Team from Culcheth near Wigan, with Bebb scoring a brace of tries and Saunders contact the club via social

yards. A last-ditch opportunity came to Nathan Keightley but the defence held firm. Church then had 2 cor ners in quick succession. Brett Lovell's header found the net but was ruled out for pushing. Church then missed a golden chance with their last kick of the match.

Full Time - Maine Road FC 1 PCFC 1

Church won the penalty shoot-out 4-3 to progress to the next round.

Manager Steve Lenthall

“First of all, it was a great win but it was not the best performance. We went one-nil down and totally deserved it. We improved towards the end of the first half and we started to move the ball really well. From a free kick Brett

Lovell won a great header, Tom Bren nan controlled it and as calm as you like he rounded the keeper, slotted it in to make it one-one.

The second half performance was a little bit better, there were more posi tives but it went to the lottery of pen alties.”

Stocksbridge Park Steels have had an event ful week ahead of their eagerly anticipated FA Cup Qualifying tie at home this week end.

The club has seen one player out of the door, one player in and Bracken Moor also wel comed the German under 21 national team for their preparations ahead of their game against England u21s in midweek, at Bram mall Lane.

Steels confirmed the signing of Ify Ofoegbu from Ossett United. The powerful striker signs for Stocksbridge following the departure of Gareth Curtis who signed for Clipstone.

The 22-year-old forward started his career at Chesterfield where he played alongside our current striker Luke Rawson. He’d have a loan spell with Sheffield FC before being re leased in 2019. Since then, he has played for Wakefield, Tadcaster Albion, Worksop Town, Grantham Town and then Ossett, who he signed for shortly after the appointment of Jas Colliver as manager.

After the signing, Ian Richards said: “I am excited to sign Ify Ofoegby. He is the perfect player and character we need at the club.

“He has had experience at a higher level and has been a success already at this level. He of fers pace, power and directness to our front line, which will complement the quality we already have in this area.

“Speaking to those who have played and man aged him previously, his attitude and com mitment are excellent and with being only 22

FA CUP DREAM STILL ALIVE: Steels new signing Ify Ofoegbu

is going to fit in perfectly in our squad and will grow and develop as a player within the group.”

The FA Cup returns again this weekend, Steels take on, at home, Ashington AFC from the Northern League. They have already knocked out Northern Premier Division Ashton Unit ed and at weekend knocked out Conference North side Bradford PA so it will be a massive game that both teams want to progress to the 4th Qualifying round.

If Stocksbridge wins it and progresses to the next round it would be for only the 2nd time in their history.

Winning clubs in the third round qualify ing will collect £5625 from the FA Cup prize fund, while the losing clubs will also exit the competition with £1875.

Chairman Graham Furness told Look Local

“ This is a huge game for us and we are antici pating the away side bringing plenty of sup

port for this eagerly anticipated cup game. It would be nice for the local community to turn up and get behind the team.”

A bumper crowd is expected with admission £8 adults, £5 concs. and under 12s free with an adult. Kick-off is 3pm at Bracken Moor, Stocksbridge. FA Cup 3rd qualifying round vs Ashington AFC.
