Incredible teenager who had open heart surgery is now first woman to finish Santa Dash 5K race An inspiring teenager has told her incredible story of how she went from having open heart surgery at Leeds Children’s Hospital to coming first at a 5km race in the city in the space of just three years, writes Charles Gray for The Yorkshire Evening Post. Molly Hayes, 14, from Stocksbridge, was the first woman to finish the annual Big Leeds Santa Dash 2022 on Sunday morning with an impressive time of 22 minutes and 44 seconds – a personal best. It’s an incredible achievement for someone whose parents were told just three years prior that she had a 10% chance of surviving open heart surgery. Speaking after the race, which was held to raise funds for St Gemma’s Hospice, Molly told the Yorkshire Evening Post that she had been looking forward to running in Leeds due to the close bond she has formed with the city since she began receiving treatment at the children’s hospital at Leeds General Infirmary. The complications started when nine-yearold Molly suffered a stroke in February 2018,

Just to see Molly running is incredible. To see her up and walking is incredible. It’s still very surreal.” Molly, who aspires to be an officer and fastjet pilot in the Royal Air Force, now has a number of races in her sight through the next year and has set up a fundraising page where she is raising money for The Leeds Children's Heart Surgery Fund, which funded her surgery. Molly initially set a target of £256 and has already smashed that by raising an amazing £1,123.

£11,500 raised for Hospitals Charity The team at Fox Valley have raised a fantastic £11,500 for Sheffield's Hospitals Charity, following several fundraising events. A fire walk at Halloween and a Christmas grotto took place last weekend. Sheffield's Hospitals Charity funds initiatives which are over and above what can be afforded locally including projects that improve individuals' health, state-of-the-art equipment, pioneering research, patient support services and the transformation of the hospitals in Sheffield into a more welcoming and comfortable space. The cheque was handed over by the Fox Valley management team to Gareth Aston, who is the CEO of Sheffield's Hospitals Charity. Gareth said: “Over the last year it's been an absolute privilege to work with Fox Valley. From fire walks to

the big man in red, it’s been a fantastic fundraising journey. "Thank you to Claire and the rest of the team for raising what is an amazing amount of money that will support our staff and patients at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals."

Two secondary schools told its pupils to stay home this week. Stocksbridge High School was reportedly without hot water or heating on Tuesday 13 December as Sheffield remained in the grip of a subzero cold snap.

The Fox Valley team will be working with the centre's businesses over the coming weeks to pick a new local charity to support throughout 2023.

As a result, the academy in Shay House Lane told all students not to come in today, with work set through online classrooms much like during the pandemic.

Fox Valley's Centre Manager, Claire Biltcliffe, said: "We are thrilled to raise such a fantastic amount for this worthy charity.

Ecclesfield Comprehensive School closed to all pupils on Monday 12 December, citing it was unsafe for pupils to attend. The school's theatrical production of ‘Footloose’ scheduled for evening performances all this week have all been postponed due to the weather and a number of pupil illnesses, the performances are, however, rescheduled for January.

"We are now looking forward to 2023 and, together with the businesses at the centre, we will pick another local charity to support." To keep up to date with news and events at Fox Valley visit www.foxvalleysheffield.co.uk.

Dog park wins approval to reopen on second attempt A Sheffield dog exercise park in the Rivelin Valley that was told to close because it contravened green belt rules has now won the right to reopen, writes Julia Armstrong, local democracy reporter. Sheffield City Council’s planning committee gave permission to a revised proposal for a dog exercise area on

land opposite Holme Head Wheel Dam on Rivelin Valley Road.

A proposal made in September by landowner Mick Hill was rejected because it was too visible in an area of high landscape value. The revised scheme moves the exercise area to a less visible part of the land near Mr Hill’s sta-

bles and includes only two car parking spaces. Fencing has been changed to a type thought more suitable in a rural setting and no permanent structures will be allowed in the exercise area. Previously, Mr Hill wanted to build a wooden shelter for people to get out of bad weather.

Hit channel 4 show picks Deepcar Artist

“My design for the show is inspired by my own childhood experiences of Christmas and posting letters overseas to my grandad, and by my young daughter’s question of how her letter to Santa actually reaches him. “I love working in miniature so my piece is full of tiny festive details that depict my idea of where your

Coun Cliff Woodcraft agreed: “This is a much improved ap-

plication. Moving it further back has taken away from the visual impact. The fencing is a massive improvement.” Mr Hill said after the meeting: “I’m happy it’s been resolved. It’s been a long battle. We’ll be opening soon because we’ve got to meet the conditions first.”

letters to Santa end up after you’ve dropped them into the post box.” Inspired by her love of the outdoors and the tranquillity she feels when she travels, Kat’s cut paper collages are intricately pieced together from her cosy home studio in the Yorkshire hills. Each collage is delicately crafted from hundreds of almost indiscernible pieces of hand-painted paper that include recycled magazines, used stamps and envelopes, dictionary pages, sheet music, old books and a variety of other collected sentimental papers. Each finished piece is truly unique; with every micro element breathing depth and character into each meticulously honest scene. So, get your mince pies ready and warm your mulled wine, and turn to channel 4 at 5pm on 23rd December for a trip into winter wonderland to see what Kat and her friends are going to make.

+ Ultimate Activity Camps and Clubs are guaranteed to give your child enjoyment and excitement during the school holidays!

“I was honoured to be contacted by the team behind Kirstie’s Handmade Christmas and overjoyed to be chosen to compete on the show,” says Kat, a cut paper collage artist from Deepcar.

committee heard in September. The application was supported by dog owners who used the enclosed area before the council told Mr Hill he needed planning permission to operate a public facility. He said he originally set it up to exercise his own dogs, and passers-by asked to use it.

Swimming is included

CLUB

Sheffield artist Kat Taylor is set to star in this year’s Kirstie’s Handmade Christmas – the channel 4 programme fronted by Kirstie Alsopp that shows how people can enjoy a memorable Christmas using second hand and homemade items. Every episode, artists are tasked with creating something festive in their own style.

Mr Hill said previously that the exercise area is much needed because it would provide a safe and enclosed environment for dogs and owners, which is important for reactive, nervous, rescue, recovering or young dogs. It will be used by one owner at a time.

The Ultimate Activity Camps and Clubs are insured, DBS checked, First Aid trained and experienced or qualified in the activities on offer!

Sheffield Mums Against Cancer raise cash for city charities IF you want a job doing, get a busy mum on the case…or even better, a whole team of busy mums! Sheffield Mums Against Cancer (SMAC) is the group headed by Ceri Rodgers and her friends that has, since it was launched in 2014, raised well over £125,000 for local cancer charities. Stannington gas incident: Ofgem 'extremely concerned' more than 190 vulnerable people have no gas Energy regulator Ofgem has said it is "extremely concerned" almost 200 vulnerable people in Sheffield have been left without gas amid the freezing cold temperatures, writes Ted Henessey for The Yorkshire Post. "We have received assurances from Cadent that each of these customers is being cared for and made comfortable while they wait for their supply to be restored. While the vast majority of customers should be back on supply over the weekend, it is possible that there will continue to be smaller scale, shorter duration disruptions to supplies as Cadent engineers fully remove all of the water from the gas pipes." Those on the priority services register are vulnerable people who need extra

Separately, Yorkshire Water confirmed it will handle compensation claims for water damage and additional costs incurred. Since last weekend more than 200 engineers from distribution company Cadent had been working to restore gas to almost 2,000 homes which lost their supply. On Thursday afternoon Yorkshire Water's director of water, Neil Dewis, was confronted by an angry resident as he joined other agencies' representatives for a press conference.

Lyndsey Hudson said she found her house flooding at the weekend after a main burst, forcing huge amounts of water into the gas network. Mr Dewis said the main that burst, affecting the gas system, was an asbestoscement main from 1970. He added that the firm has invested £15 million in Sheffield to reduce leaks. He said the reason for the burst and how it came to affect the gas main is still under investigation. Sheffield City Council chief executive Kate Josephs said the local authority had been working with Cadent to make sure vulnerable people had been provided with electric cookers, blankets and other essentials, including thermal socks.

The team at stylish Hillsborough shop New Image on Middlewood Road brought a stylish flair to a special fundraising coffee morning that raised a fantastic £475 for St Luke’s patient care. “We are delighted that New Image decided to support us and that their customers were so generous,” said St Luke’s Community Fundraiser Ellie Matthews. “Coffee and cake is always a winning combination and the amount raised is going to make a great difference to the lives of all our patients and their families.”

Local News Ecclesfield: Police question man in car suspected of approaching pupils heading to school A man suspected of approaching groups of youngsters on their way to school in Sheffield has been questioned by police, writes David Kessen for The Sheffield Star. Officers say they have spoken to the man after concerns were raised by residents in and around Ecclesfield about a man in a car stopping and approaching people as they headed to school. It follows investigations by South Yorkshire Police’s Sheffield North East neighbourhood policing team, and its officers are also stepping up patrols in response to the concerns. They said in a statement: “We have received a number of reports from members of the public raising concerns about a man in a car approaching groups of people on their way to school in the Ecclesfield area of Sheffield. We want to reassure local residents that we are aware of concerns and that the person has now been identified and spoken to. “Whilst to date we have not gathered any evidence to suggest that any crimes have taken place, we understand how concerning these incidents and reports can be for local people. We are delivering extra patrols to provide reassurance, and

have visited the schools which have raised concerns and provided advice to parents. “We would encourage anyone who notices anything suspicious or has any concerns to get in touch, and report it to police so we can build up a full picture of what’s happening.” It is the latest report in the city of people in cars approaching people on their way to schools In October, officers from Sheffield South West neighbourhood policing team issued advice to parents in Ecclesall, after reports of men in cars approaching schoolchildren outside a number of schools in that part of the city, according to reports received by police. And the previous month it was reported that schools including Notre Dame High School and High Storrs School had warned parents about two older men in a blue Ford car apparently approaching children on their way home. Police also said in September that they were investigating reports that a stranger had tried to lure a teenage girl into a car in Wincobank by telling her there were puppies inside.

Pension credit Penistone and Stocksbridge MP Miriam Cates has joined a Government campaign urging pensioners to check if they are eligible for Pension Credit by the 18th December. Pension Credit is a top up for lower income pensioners that is worth an average of £3,500 per year. As well as a cash top up to the State Pension, it can help pensioners access other support such as help with heating costs, council tax reduction schemes, and a free over-75s TV licence. The Government has launched a new push to boost take-up, as many pensioners who are eligible are believed to be missing out on receiving this cost of living support. Backing the campaign, Miriam Cates said "It's really important that everyone receives the government support they're entitled to to help with the current cost of living pressures. "It's great that there are already 1,939 people in my constituency receiving Pension Credit, but I want to make sure those who may be missing out check if they are eligible.

"Pension Credit is just one way that the Government is helping pensioners with the cost of living, alongside doubling the Winter Fuel Payment and increasing the State Pension by 10% from April."

"Pension Credit can make a real difference and I am determined to make sure this support – worth an average of £3,500 per year – is reaching everyone who needs it."

How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These QHHG WR EH ¿OOHG LQ ZLWK QXPEHUV WKDW complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Woodroyd Road Planning Meeting Stocksbridge Christmas Party

Sheffield Local Plan After many years of work the draft Local Plan has been published for public consultation which commences on 9th January. The Prime Minister’s second embarrassing U-Turn within a week proves we were right to fight the Governments arbitrary housing targets. The Plan proposes a lower number of homes than the Tories algorithm would have forced the Council to deliver. Labour councillors also successfully fought to ensure that no new homes are built on the Green Belt as part of the plan. I fought alongside the Friends of Hollins Busk to have the previous planning application rejected only to have the Conservative Government overturn the decision. The presence of Hollins Busk on the list of sites listed within the draft Plan is a direct result of housing being previously approved at the site, and council planning officers having to follow government rules. Together the people of Stockbridge have fought developments at the site, and we will fight any future plans to build more houses on this important greenfield space. Several events to look at the options for housing in our area will be held early next year and I would encourage all local people to attend and provide feedback, an on-line option will also be available. I will circulate the dates once finalised.

9/11 REF 19/03890/out. Held in Sheffield Town Hall at 1pm Tuesday 6 th December 2022.

The chair said three councillors who abstained at the last meeting were not here for today’s meeting but some new council faces at this meeting, so double standards by the chair. the land of Stinkbridge to enslave its dwellers They said it was around 1976 that the local council against their will to find happiness in one simple filled in which goes under the children’s playground act, shipping! The Devil knew that we all had basic and now is the cause of flooding but at this meeting instincts, as he was very clever, and long ago he today another fresh face from Yorkshire Water said formed a devilish plan, to divert all of us away that no one can be sure where the water goes apart from our natural instincts towards substitutes and from down hill. He also said it had nothing to do with distractions. the problem over flooding and that the owners want He called together a small group of bored but to sell and it’s not their problem about flooding. He wealthy individuals who had nothing better to do said this green space is mainly clay and the flooding than dream and waste their time on themselves. problem is not on his green space land but under the old brick works, but cannot be sure. One lady raised Powerful people, competitive and selfish folk who concerns about trees and flooding but when it came had lost their way and valued nothing else but down to it this lady on the council said I was going money and power. Power, you see, changes us if to abstain but seeing as the other councillors have we arent careful and instead of loving others we vote in favour, I’ll do the same. The first councillor to love ourselves too much which turns our hearts Cllr Julie Grocutt speak said this: I do vote with a heavy heart in favour, sour and twisted so that we cant see clearly what is Stocksbridge & Upper Don Ward Councillor another councillor said that he had been reassured by happening to us. what he had heard at this meeting so was in favour.

Site visits were always made on the Monday before the planning meeting, Mr Hinchey would like to make this point, Your council site visit should have Tory Political stunt been last week, Wed 30yh November and Thursday Dear look local, 1 st December when emergency flood pipes and barriers were put in place. So when you do your site Did other readers get 'News from Miriam Cates visit the day before the planning meeting people will MP' through their letter box? wonder was it raining or was it a bright sunny day. She is still managing a smile even though the news Councillors can plan these site visits but the people in is about help if you are in poverty. Maybe she is Woodroyd Road cannot plan when it rains if they will smiling because she tells us increasing poverty is get flooded or not. Note: when it rained heavy last nothing to do with 12 years of her own Tory party week the flood pipes and barriers were taken down government but is because of 'The illegal Russian within two days, its usually three months. Invasion of Ukraine and surge in post pandemic demand' Not much talk about road safety at this meeting, site visits are made in the day when people are at work And there was me thinking that 13 years of Tory and parking isn’t a problem like it is evenings and austerity squeezing the life out of public services weekends. might just have had an effect on prosperity as we spend more and more time trying to look after Flooding pictures enclosed were not show at either those we care for and less and less going to work. planning meeting. I had even thought that damaging ties and cooperation with neighbouring countries because of a Tory political stunt was making us poorer. So thanks for the 'News'. Keep smiling. Conservative condidate Received a glossy pamphlet yesterday on behalf of my Conservative MP, Conservative councillor and a Conservative candidate?. Cant wait for him to come calling. Wondering how they pay for the extravagant publishing, I suppose from a donation from a well known Tory? of the likes of Michelle Moan who received £29million and over all £65m for the family for selling over £200m of unusable PPE when well known PPE suppliers (Arco) got snubbed. Trying to get away from scrutiny shes done a disappearing act, but is this the act to undo the Government. They’re billions more to uncover. For people who live on Woodroyd Road who do So the upshot is it looks like you and me ‘the tax not have a drive it’s a case of first come first served payer’ paid for the glossy pamphlets. The pamphlet, and sometimes they have to park 200 yards away, nice pictures no substance. Suggestion next time so we have a problem here but our local councillors print on super soft triple thick paper, we’re all into and now Sheffield city planning to build another 42 houses is a joke, Woodroyd road residents concerns recycling these days. have been ignored. Our readers, they decided didn’t want the simple truth but fantasy and eventually it didn’t matter if the words were lies as long as they were being entertained. Together with our group drive to be accepted, through friendship and community, which was manipulated to become a fear of NOT being accepted by our peers and resulting in us shunning anybody else who didn’t fit in, they created a huge network of people across the world and fitted them all into various catagories. These they then exploited with adverts and by feeding their particular interests, likes and hates. The devilish plan was set and the net was thrown over the whole world. .... Shipping, instead of being a natural way to exist was to become their next master stroke in twisting the truth and gaining the whole world....BDC (TBC)

College creates more than 140 food packs to support students A huge total of more than 140 food packs have been created by the Student Services department at Barnsley College for students to take home over the Christmas period. Led by Sasha Foyster from the Student Services department, the collection started back in October after it was identified that some students and their families may need food support over Christmas due to financial challenges and the cost-of-living crisis. The collection has grown into what is now ‘The Pantry’ in the college’s Old Mill Lane campus – a hub where donations can be made, and students can collect their packs discreetly. Many staff departments across the College made generous donations, including a large

donation from the Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) Centre. There were also contributions made from Virgin Money Bank and Barnsley Card. Students from the Learning for Living and Work (LfLW) department, which supports young people with additional needs, designed Christmas cards which have been sold for £2 per pack, with all funds donated to The Pantry. LfLW students, along with LfLW Work Skills Facilitator Phoebe Salmon-Horner, also volunteered their time to help pack the food donations ready for the students to pick up. Each student collecting a food pack also has the option to collect a hygiene pack, which contains items such as tooth paste and a toothbrush, shampoo, and body wash.

Over 34,000 Patients Waiting a MONTH for a GP Appointment New data from the NHS has shown that more people are waiting a month for a GP appointment than at any time since records began in 2017, claim Labour Sheffield. 34,200 people in Sheffield faced a wait of 28 days or more to see a GP in October alone. A further 58,736 people had to wait more than two weeks. Over a quarter (26%) of all appointments across Sheffield practices were delayed by at least 14 days. Almost two million people in England had to wait more than 28 days in October, while a further 4.3 million had to wait more than two weeks. At the same time, the number of GPs has fallen to a record low, leaving patients in a desperate scramble to be seen. Since 2013, 4,600 GPs have been cut. Labour’s plans would: Double the number of medical school places, training 15,000 new doctors a year Train 10,000 additional nurses and midwives every year Double the number of district nurses qualifying each year Train 5,000 new health visitors Labour’s plan will see patients guaranteed a face-to-face appointment with a GP if they

want one. While some patients prefer to hold appointments over the phone, many are frustrated at not being able to see their doctor in person, and just 22% of patients are given a choice in the type of appointment they have. One in seven people who try to speak to a nurse or GP were unable to get an appointment at all last year. Labour is also pledging to bring back the family doctor, so patients can see the same GP each appointment if they choose to. Patients are increasingly unable to see the doctor of their choice, with two in every three patients rarely or never speaking to their preferred doctor, up from just half in 2018. Under Labour’s plans, GP practices will be provided with incentives to offer patients continuity of care, so doctors must take into account patients’ preferences. Cllr George Lindars-Hammond, Labour councillor, Hillsborough ward; co-chair of the Adult Health and Social Care Policy Committee) said, “Patients – some of them very vulnerable – are finding it ever harder to see a GP when they need to. In October 2022 we had 93,000 people unable to access an appointment within two weeks. There will be conditions going undiagnosed until it is too late.”

Cllr Ruth Milsom, Labour councillor, Crookes and Crosspool ward; chair of the Health Scrutiny Sub-committee) commented, “Sadly this situation is not new. 12 years of Conservative failure has driven the NHS deeper and deeper into crisis. Despite all the rhetoric about keeping people well and out of hospital, Tory politicians have failed to address the most obvious workforce needs, leaving us with thousands fewer GPs. Patients are being put at risk, and clinicians are under intolerable pressure.” Cllr Milsom called in a report to the Scrutiny committee from South Yorkshire Integrated Care Board in November 2022, asking them to set out the ‘state of primary care in Sheffield’. “It’s not good,” she said. “Until there is a fundamental change of attitude in government, we can only continue to challenge local NHS commissioners to respond to the growing crisis in primary care. If they’re unable to make significant improvements, they must demand better resources and performance from politicians in Westminster. The Scrutiny committee is keen to hear more from GPs themselves as to the pressures they face.”

Sasha Foyster, a Student Services Officer at the college, said: “I wanted to offer some sort of food support for students over the Christmas break and I really wanted it to feel more like a gift than a typical ‘foodbank’. “We and other departments identified that some students might need this type of support over Christmas and I thought it was important that we did something about it. We really hope these packs make a difference to the students.” Photograph: Sasha Foyster, the Barnsley College Student Services Officer who led the collection effort, at ‘The Pantry’ with some of the donations received.

All photos should be LANDSCAPE please, and as high a resolution as possible. Angela angela211267@gmail.com or Catherine catherine.cotterill@hotmail.co.uk

Gilkes is currently building up his fitness having spent a chunk of the 2022 campaign on the sidelines with broken ribs and a broken arm - of which he

had the metal platework removed from last week. But Stead says he has been introduced at Sheffield with the intention of keeping him involved on a longer term basis and is excited to see how Gilkes progresses during his time with the club. Said Stead: “I was absolutely delighted that Dan’s name was still on the list of riders available to us when

“I spoke in some depth with Dan towards the end of last season and told him I genuinely felt the time was right for him to step up and make the move into the Premiership - albeit on his limited bike time and Championship racing this year due to injury. “Dan is somebody I’ve been working with for quite some time now in the GB Academy and with the GB squad. “He is somebody who never fails to impress me with his level of application and dedication to the sport. “He is the perfect fit for us and somebody I feel I work very, very well with and someone I think I can help continue to develop.

“We see this as a longterm thing and that was made very, very clear to Dan throughout our discussions with him.

“He is really, really happy to be involved with Sheffield and while it will be a huge challenge for him, if what I’ve seen of Dan up to now continues and develops even further with us, then we really have got a shining light on our hands. “Sheffield fans really can trust me on this one when I tell them that they can look forward to seeing a talented, young British rider who will give his absolute everything for the club.” It means Connor Mountain will depart the Sheffield side for 2023 having ‘graduated’ from the Rising Star scheme – but Stead is keen to see him return to Owlerton at some point in the future.

"I don't think we've seen the end of Connor in a Tigers' racejacket,” he said. "He was exceptional for us in 2022 and I was desperately disappointed that no matter how hard we tried, he just didn't fit average wise with what else we'd already got lined up. "Trust me, we explored all options to try and keep him involved in the team but for next year, it just didn't work unfortunately. "I know a lot of Sheffield fans will also be disappointed by that but right now all we can do is thank him for his tremendous efforts and like I've said, I don't think it's the last time we'll see him racing for Sheffield because he did us so, so proud and he leaves with our very best wishes.”

Rugby look forward to xmas jumper fixture A late call off at the weekend left Globe Holidays sponsored Stocksbridge Rugby kicking their heels without a game as hosts Mosborough were unable to declare their ground fit for play. The weather seemed to have gotten the better of the whole league as all the games were frozen off leaving Stocksbridge still in 6th place in the Yorkshire 4 Counties league coming up to the Christmas break. The enforced rest gives Head Coach, Andy Lawrence & his roster extra time to recover & prepare for the next fixture at home this coming weekend, when winless Knaresborough Rugby, bottom of the league are the final visitors of 2022 to Coal Pit Lane for the tra-

ditional Christmas Jumper fixture. Whilst Liam Dyson is still suffering the after effects of a head knock, back rowers Pete Newton is back in contention for a starting berth after recovering from a tricky hamstring injury, whilst Reece ‘diesel’ Aspin has no ill effects from a broken nose sustained away at Hornsea. The team also expect to be bolstered by the returning boiler room due of ‘slammin’ Sam Whitaker alongside ‘clock tower’ Andy Beal. Whilst nothing can be taken for granted, Stocksbridge should be looking for a maximum bonus point victory at the weekend, to see the Year out in style. ‘I guess it’s down to

our attitude’ says skipper & that man Adam Frith, ‘if we continue to play to our strengths & work with the game plan, we should put ourselves in a good position, but it’s down to us to do just that !’ After the Christmas Jumper fixture, the Club will be hosting their own Christmas Party with special guest & front row forward Ricky ‘rooney’ James belting out some seasonal tunes on the guitar. The 1st XV will then break for Christmas before travelling to York RI on 7th Jan for their first fixture of the New Year.

Steels ready for top of the table clash Stocksbridge Park Steels will be hoping the cold weather disappears before the weekend so that their top of the table clash with Dunston FC can go ahead. Steels currently sit in third place with Dunston just one point behind them in fifth place. Ian Richards men beat Dunston 3-2 in the first game of the season so they are aware it will not be an easy task ,however their form since the beginning of November has been exceptional with only one defeat in twelve games therefore they can go into the game with confidence. Whatever happens on Saturday, Steels will at the very least be in the top six going into Christ-

PAIRS SUCCESS IN WINTER GOLF Paul Blake and Ash Jowitt (pictured) from Stocksbridge entered the Mizuno Winter Pairs competition. They had a tough game against a very good 4 and 5 handicap pair from Silkstone. They were +1 after 9 holes, then all square after 15 including a great 2 on 13th from Paul. They re-took the lead after 16 holes with Ash holing a superb 20 foot birdie putt. Ash then repeated it on the last hole with another 20 footer to win 2 up.

Although it was winter conditions, the pair were very complimentary of the greens. They are waiting now to see who they play in the next round. At Stocksbridge, golf has been limited by the start of the cold snap. On 7
