WILL GET £60 EACH FROM WATER COMPANY
On Friday, Cadent Gas confirmed every household hit by the catastrophic Stannington ‘gas flood’ was now reconnected to the mains supply, two weeks after the disastrous incident. It came after a Yorkshire Water high-pressure mains pipe in Stannington Road burst and tore into gas pipes belonging to Cadent Gas Ltd on December 2. The disaster caused water to pour into the gas supply, knocking out heating for more than 3,000 homes in the area and
leaving thousands of people without hot water or central heating.
formation we have at present, we do not believe that is likely to be the case."
Even as work began immediately to repair it, some households were left in the cold for the whole two weeks during this past week’s sub-zero temperatures.
She said water escaped from the main via a hole where "a fitting had been displaced", adding the pipe had not been recently excavated and was "working as it should".
Cadent Gas said it had removed more than a million litres of water from gas pipes in an area spanning four miles.
"Typically, something needs to happen to remove such a fitting - it needs to have internal or external force applied to it. We don't yet know how that happened," said Ms Shaw.
Nicola Shaw, chief executive officer of Yorkshire Water, said: "There is a misapprehension that water came out of our pipe as a result of negligence on Yorkshire Water's part. "We will have an independent investigation, but with the in-
She also said customers in Stannington and Hillsborough would receive "an initial automatic payment to cover any increased electricity usage customers have had to face".

It’s the most wonderful time of the year And what could be more wonderful than to turn on your own town’s Christmas lights... On Friday 18th November with over 100 nominations on the Fox valley Facebook page Molly Hayes and Charlie Leeks jointly pressed the switch to turn on the lights in Stocksbridge and light up the town for the Festive period. Molly and Charlie are both remarkable and inspirational, amazing young children and have both been through so much in their young lives.
Currently her just giving page has raised over £1,100 and she has more races lined up and is currently running the equivalent to the route 66 that’s 2400 miles to help children who have heart conditions like she did. If you have a spare £1 or two please help Molly and her justgiving page.
https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/ mollyhayeschsf Two special children from Stocksbridge lighting up the lives of others this Christmas
Charlie aged 12 always has a smile for everyone even though he has spent the last 7 years on chemotherapy for an incurable brain tumour and will be enjoying a very special Christmas this year with his family as he’s not currently having treatment. Molly is also a very inspirational young lady who has never let her illness get in the way of helping others at just 14 years of age.
Molly is now able to run, something that she was told she would never be able to do let alone walk, and in doing so is now currently raising funds for Leeds Children’s Heart Surgery Fund to say thank you for saving her life.

Thanks to him we have the Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park and within it the Advanced Wellbeing Research Centre, which are making such a difference to people’s lives now and for our future, perfectly reflecting his Ministerial career and his passion and love of Sheffield.
Right Worshipful Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Councillor Sioned Mair Richards bestowed Mr Caborn, Former Sheffield MP and Minister, with the honour during a special meeting of council members today (Wednesday 14 December) in gratitude for his contribution to the advancement of sport in Sheffield, nationwide and internationally, and, in doing so, rendering eminent services to the City.
“Richard’s heart and soul goes into everything he does, always putting this city first, and it is my absolute privilege to name him an Honorary Freeman. We will look forward to celebrating his achievements and this honour during an official ceremony in the New Year.”
Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Councillor Sioned Mair-Richards, said: “I cannot think of a more worthy and deserving candidate than Richard Caborn to receive the highest honour we can bestow, Freedom of the City.
Mr Caborn will follow in his father, George Caborn’s footsteps who was given Freedom of the City in 1981, with them being the only father and son to be bestowed this high honour.

School rebuild given go-ahead A primary School in Chapeltown, Sheffield is one of 239 schools nationwide to receive funding that will see the school refurbished or rebuilt, providing levelling up opportunities across the country.
Windmill Hill staff and pupils can now look forward to working and learning in state-of-the-art facilities, setting the school up for continued improvements and high educational standards for all its pupils for decades to come. While details around the exact amount of funding and timescales for delivery of the work are still to be confirmed, DfE representatives, Steel City Schools Partnership and Windmill Hill School have begun engaging in initial consultation around the plans. Across the School Rebuilding Programme, the rebuilds and refurbishments will create modern education environments, providing new facilities from classrooms and learning spaces to sports halls and dining rooms.
Windmill Hill Primary School, Steel City School Partnership (SCSP) announcement, has been welcomed after 4 years of applications.
CEO of Steel City Schools Partnership, Nicola Shipman, said; “It is fantastic news that Windmill Hill Primary School has been finally selected to benefit from this important government scheme. It will provide much needed investment in the school that will benefit our children and the community now and for years to come. Steel City Schools Partnership are looking forward to working with the Department for Education as more details of programme are released to us.” Katy Davison, Chair of Governors at Windmill Hill Primary School, said; “We are delighted that Windmill Hill has been prioritised for the school rebuilding programme. Our children will be excited to learn and our staff to work in a state-ofthe-art facility. That can only
be a good thing to support their continued progress and development. It is great news for children, parents, staff, the local community and the Trust as a whole. It tops off a really positive year for Windmill Hill following our successful Ofsted inspection earlier this year.” Miriam Cates, MP for Penistone and Stocksbridge, added; “This is really exciting for the Windmill Hill Primary School community. Having worked closely with Steel City Schools Partnership for the past 3 years and knowing about their previous applications, I am delighted that this programme will provide top of the range facilities for the children to learn in. It is really important for making sure they get the best start in life. I would like to thank everybody who worked so hard on this.” Further details on the scope of the project and timescales for delivery will be announced in the coming months.

As part of the national Queens Canopy project, and in commemoration of our late Queen Elizabeth II, exemplary service of 70 years. A green canopy of seven trees with a plaque mounted on a stone has been commissioned by Ecclesfield Parish Council and installed in Chapeltown Park. The work was carried out on the 4th December 2022 by several volunteers, including local Police, Councillor John Housley, Chairman of Ecclesfield Parish Council and Stephen Knight, President Elect of the Rotary Club of Wortley. The canopy is a circle of seven fruit trees, that when grown should form a canopy. Each tree

The Plaque was erected to illustrate the contributions of the various support groups, and a cheque for £175 was made against the cost of the installation of the stone and plaque, which was presented by Stepen Knight on behalf of the Rotary Club of Wortley. Everyone is welcome to visit the sight and witness the growth of the fruit trees into a beautiful canopy over the next few years, which hopefully will express unity within the community.

A section of Hollin Busk in Deepcar has been removed from Sheffield’s draft housing plans following an amendment put forward by Conservative Councillor for Stocksbridge and Upper Don Ward, Lewis Chinchen – although the site could still be at risk of development.
Sheffield City Council at its Full Council meeting on 14 December debated Sheffield’s Publication Draft Local Plan which – after public consultation and examination by the Planning Inspectorate – will dictate where new homes in the city are built. Both the Carr Road and Broomfield Lane ends of Hollin Busk were allocated as sites for housing development in the Draft Plan. Although the Carr Road section has – despite significant local opposition – already been granted outline planning permission, the Broomfield Lane section has not and Cllr Chinchen proposed an amendment that would remove it as a site for housing development in the Draft Plan. This amendment was passed. Outline planning applications for the Broomfield Lane section of Hollin Busk have already been

services including diagnostic services which would usually involve a trip to hospital.
Sheffield City Council is working with the NHS South Yorkshire Integrated Care Board to deliver the hubs.
According the Local Democracy Reporting Service, a further proposal to build a new GP hub in the city centre has still to be finalised and may not go ahead.
The £37m cost will be met by government as the care board is not allowed to own capital assets such as buildings.
A proposal to move patients from Melrose Surgery to a new hub at Concord Sports Centre in Shiregreen has also not been decided.
City councillors were told the move would help combat the "chronic shortage" of GPs in the city by providing modern premises, with space to develop other health
The new premises would be leased by GPs for 25 years at a peppercorn rent, plus service charges, meaning they would not have to take on debt to own their own surgeries.

Local Plan: Proposed new vision for Sheffield will benefit all communities claim City Council
The proposed Sheffield Local Plan, an ambitious vision for the city, was approved at Full Council last week, paving the way for investment and development across the city’s communities. Along with the proposed Plan, the consultation strategy was also agreed, setting out how the Council will engage with local people to get their views on important aspects of the city’s future and to agree the final content. The Local Plan brings together proposals around housing, environment, development, economic growth and transport, looking
at these as one big picture, addressing the challenges of how they each impact the other, and how they will bring benefits for everyone in Sheffield. Cllr Terry Fox, Leader of Sheffield City Council, said: “This Plan is for the people of Sheffield, setting out an exciting and ambitious, yet realistic vision for the city and all our communities. “It will have implications for how all of us live our lives, setting how and where the city will develop over the next 15-20 years.

Apologies from Santa
Last week, as part of South Yorkshire Police's Christmas Drink Drive Campaign, we began our efforts to target those members of the public who feel that it is ok and safe to drive whilst over the legal limit for drink or drugs.
Message from Santa Dear Children of Deepcar I'm so sorry I missed you on Sunday when I hoped to check around with Deepcar Village Hall supporters to make sure of my route for Christmas night. We need new houses but these must be built in the right places. It is essential that we do not allow housing development that leads to the merging of closely linked but distinct settlements like Stocksbridge and Deepcar. Nor can we allow the continued destruction of the character of an area, harm to local wildlife or an increased local flood risk. Enough is enough and we must protect sites like these that are Green Belt in all but name.
Lock away ladders, tools, and other garden items that burglars could use to enter your home, make sure wheelie bins and other garden items are stored away from second floor windows.
We would like to wish our customers a Very Merry Xmas & a Happy New Year. 5IBOL ZPV for your loyal custom

One million journeys made cheaper with Mayor’s £2 fare

Protecting our Green Spaces I am pleased that my amendment to remove the Broomfield Lane/Hollin Busk Road section of Hollin Busk in Deepcar from Sheffield’s Draft Local Plan was passed at Sheffield’s Full Council meeting on 14 December. Sheffield’s Local Plan will dictate where new houses in the city are built and so this is a step in the right direction in the campaign to protect this valuable greenfield site from development. That said, there is still work to do. The other end of Hollin Busk adjacent to Carr Road has unfortunately – despite significant local opposition – already been granted outline planning permission. However, the section adjacent to Broomfield Lane has not which is why I submitted the amendment. The planning applications that have already been submitted for this site – which I objected to in the public consultation – could still be approved but I hope my successful amendment will carry some weight when a decision is made on these.
Lewis Chinchen Conservative Councillor for Stocksbridge and Upper Don
Passengers in South Yorkshire have made savings on one million bus and tram journeys with the Mayor’s £2 fare. Part of Mayor Oliver Coppard’s plans to combat the cost-of-living crisis over winter, the travel scheme has saved South Yorkshire passengers nearly £500,000 since it came into force on 1 November. South Yorkshire’s Mayor, Oliver Coppard, said: “As the cost of living crisis continues to affect us all and we brace for further challenges, I am determined to do all I can help our community get through this winter with the power and resources I have. “I know cutting public transport costs is a big part of the solution for the thousands of people in our region who rely on our buses and tram network. That’s why we introduced the £2 fare cap early here in South Yorkshire, where it’s needed now - ahead of the government’s planned national scheme - and extended it to include trams. “Because while we all recognise there’s a lot of work to do to fix our broken public transport system, bit by bit we’re trying to make things better for the travelling public and this is the start of that journey.” Cutting travel costs more than two months ahead of a planned national bus fare cap, the Mayor’s £2 fare is helping passengers save up to 50% on some single trips and reduce the price of over 700,000 journeys that cost more than £2. It follows a £12.3 million rescue package from South Yorkshire’s Mayoral Combined Authority to protect bus routes and school services from cuts by operators.

The Mayor’s £2 fare is valid across South Yorkshire, on local bus services and Supertram. Bus and Supertram single journeys which already cost under £2 are not affected. Alongside the 80p Zoom Beyond fare for young people, it sees South Yorkshire boast some of the best public transport fares in the country. A Government £2 bus fare cap scheme is planned across England from January. The Mayor’s £2 fare runs until March.

A strong contingent of 18 Penistone runners made the short trip to Denby Dale to take part in the annual 6 mile Traveller’s road race. Despite the sub-zero temperatures the organisers had ensured the race could go ahead. The race was won by former Penistone runner Gareth Cooke. First back for Penistone and inside the top ten was George Parr who clocked a time of 37-04 in 8th place. Next, and in 10th place was Andrew Heppenstall who also placed first in the men’s over40 age category in 37-35. Another age group winner was Suzanne McGill in the ladies over45 category in a time of 4625. Chloe Worth picked up silver in the same age category in 4800. Penistone had one other age group winner in Bill Phillips who was the first male over70 in 5200. The silver went to Penistone runner Keith Gordon. Jemma Williams placed second in the ladies over40 category in 48-11. On the parkrun scene Tom Fryers was second finisher at Cusworth Hall in 18-35, just ahead of his dad Paul Fryers who claimed
his best ever parkrun finish in 5th place. Nell Law notched up 100 parkruns whilst taking part in the Barnsley parkrun. The club will be represented by Jack Holder, Tobiasz Musielak, Adam Ellis, David Bellego, Kyle Howarth, Lewis Kerr and Dan Gilkes. It will be a third straight season with the Owlerton outfit for Ellis who has played a key part in the Tru Plant Tigers achieving a play-off finish in both of their Premiership campaigns so far. The French born Brit has already clocked up over 320 league points for the South Yorkshire side and is a popular team member on the terraces. Co-promoter Damien Bates is thrilled to have Ellis back on board and admits he was
always a pivotal part of his winter team building. “When we signed Adam back in 2021 we always thought he’d be here for a while if everything went to plan,” Bates said. “He was absolutely fantastic for us in his first season and even though a few things didn’t go his way this year, he was still regularly among the big points. “Adam is a proven heat-leader in the Premiership now and he’ll chip in with plenty of
Said Bates: “For me, we were the best team in the league over the course of last season. “When that’s the case, you know you don’t need to make too many changes. “Of course I’m going to sound biased, but I think we’ve put together another really strong team that’s going to be right up there next year.” A reminder that 2023 Season Tickets remain on sale via: http://www.sheffield-speedway.com/ticketoffice Credit: EDDIE GARVEY

Steels in ‘good-shape’ going into 2023
The mid-term report for Stocksbridge Park Steels FC makes for satisfying reading, after a very busy summer with plenty of new signings the side found consistency hard to find in their early league games however they found inspiration in the F A cup where some excellent performances often against teams from a higher division saw them reach the third qualifying round. Due to the cup run, they found themselves near the bottom of the division at the beginning of November with several games in hand to catch up, a fantastic run saw them win eleven and draw one out of thirteen games with the only defeat coming
Steels are hoping for a bumper crowd to spur them on in their next home game against old rivals Sheffield FC on 2nd January in what promises to be a cracker of a contest to see in the new year. All at Stocksbridge Park Steels would like to wish everyone a merry Christmas and a happy and healthy new year. Next game at Bracken Moor Monday 2nd January v Sheffield FC 3pm kick off.

against the top of the table Worksop. Therefore at the halfway stage of the season Steels sit in third
place and will be looking to cement their place in the playoff positions in the next few months.
Rugby ‘frozen off’ have also shown great commitment & versatility when called upon.
Stocksbridge Rugby became victims of the arctic conditions for the 2nd week running as their eagerly anticipated home clash against lowly Knaresborough was frozen off, along with all the other fixtures in the Counties 4 Yorkshire competition at the weekend. Stocksbridge will now finish the Year in an encouraging 7th position in the league ladder, ready for a real assault on the top four places & promotion play offs in 2023 ! Advertised as the traditional Christmas Jumper fixture,
players & members sported their creations in the clubhouse instead & Callum ‘whippet’ Green, pictured , was chosen as the winner for 2022 for his natty blue number. With no further fixtures during December, the Clarach Builders Man of Steel award has been won by Jack ‘crazy feet’ Spencer who, according to Head Coach Andy Lawrence, has played in several positions for the Club & performed solidly in all roles. Others to feature in the voting were: Pat O’Leary, Ryan Smith, Jack ‘milky’ Martin, Johnny Gill & Ricky ‘rooney’ James who
At the midway point in the League Competition, Lawrence has been encouraged with the improvement, style & commitment of the whole squad, ‘we can look forward to next Year in the knowledge that we can match anyone on our day’, he enthused, adding, ‘our game is developing & evolving which will be exciting to watch & enjoyable to play, particularly as our injury list shortens & availability improves’. There is also special praise for the raft of junior talent coming thru the ranks, & making their debuts for the 1st XV this Year, Jacob Crosby, Logan Hannah, Dylan O’Keefe, Sam Miles, Joe Martin along with Harrison Norman all taking their place in the Senior Squad roster. Stocksbridge Rugby return to action on 7th January with a winnable clash away at York RI, whilst the next fixture at fortress Coal Pit Lane is on 14th January when Stocksbridge will be looking to avenge an earlier defeat to Aireborough Rugby, kick off 2.15pm. All are welcome. Chairman Andy Bell & all the Club wish the players, staff, volunteers, members & sponsors a very Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year. You are most welcome at the Clubhouse over the festive season.

Dragons Presentation Event The snow and ice of the last week put paid to any competitive golf at Stocksbridge. The course has been white over and the only activity on the course has been dog walking and sledging.
All the action has been in the clubhouse, where as always, it has been a busy social week. The Dragons Section enjoyed their annual Christmas meal, with well over 40 attending for the food and trophy presentations for the last year. Many of the years competition winners attended in person to receive their trophys from the current Dragons Captain, Steven Haigh. The winners present included Bill Boucher, Alan Flack, Bob Haythorne, Stuart Marsh, Bob Mason, Kel Meegan, Club Captain John Moss, Sandy Murphy, Doug Needham, Ash Nightingale, Alf Pearson, Tony Peers, Stuart Roebuck, Mick Siddall, Dave Stringer, John Sykes and Noel Weaver. In addition to the presentations, the Dragons welcomed the new section
Captain for 2023, Stuart Roebuck. Stuart is pictured outgoing Captain, Steven Haigh, having just been with his Captain's jacket.
