Football team who really are a family club

A local football team in Chapeltown has hit the national headlines after the team ‘produced’ eight babies in one year. Chapeltown Royal British Legion FC have recently enjoyed success on the pitch, winning the league last season - and in 2022 there seems to have been something in the beer down at the Legion, as they enjoyed a productive year off the pitch too. No fewer than eight members of the team have become fathers this year, ranging from the 1st of May up to the 19th December. Eight has been a magic number for the club, as the team have also enjoyed an unbeaten run of eight games in the league since the start of the season in September. CRBL FC has won eight out of eight matches in the Sunday League and have won both of their matches so far in the latest cup, while also winning the Blades Super Draw Division Two title last season. 'It's been really nice,' Manager Adam Todd admitted. 'There's a bit of a creche forming on the sidelines at matches now with so many mums and babies out to see their dads play.' He explained that it all began with 'a nice surprise' when one of the players posted a picture of a scan with their news in the club's group chat. 'Then over the year there just came more and more,' the manager continued. 'One of the things we've tried to do as a club is be more family friendly and it's really added to that. From left to right (oldest to youngest) Assistant manager Dave Adams with Jaxon, Dave Millen with Mason, Josh Savage with Elias, Ash Gray with Otis, Adam Simpson with Jack, Matt Bruck with Ada, Mitch Savage with Lennie, and manager Adam Todd with Edie.

Charity Cycle Team Donates £10,000 to Key Causes The team of charity cyclists from South Yorkshire retail property company, Dransfield Properties, raised an amazing £47,000 after completing the final leg of a 14-year Tour of Europe last September. The 335-mile final leg saw the 21 strong team pedal through some gruelling weather conditions from Tyne to Thames cycling from Newcastle to London’s Tower Bridge, completing their momentous journey through 14 European countries. The annual ride is headed by Managing Director of Dransfield Properties and the independent chain of department stores, Sandersons Boutique, Mark Dransfield DL, who commented: “I’d like to thank everyone who has continued to support our charity efforts over the years helping us make a real difference to struggling families and to assist some fantastic causes with their front line support.” The money raised from this year’s efforts is being used by the Dransfield Foundation to support children with life limiting illnesses and their families. Donations of £5,000 have also been made to Action Against Cancer and St Luke’s Hospice in Sheffield. Charley Cranmer, Director of Fundraising and Communications at Action Against Cancer, said: “It is significant support such as this that will make a real and lasting difference to patients with cancer. With your help we can aim high, working on cutting edge research to try and improve diagnostics and treatments to change the lives of millions of patients around the world.

“The latest cheque received brings the total raised by Team Dransfield for Action Against Cancer to over £100,000 since 2014! This is an incredible amount.” Since the first charity ride in 2007 from London to Paris, the team have covered more than 5,000 miles across 14 countries covering punishing routes through Paris, Lyon, Marseille, Portofino, Rome, Dubrovnik, Trieste, Munich, Berlin, Copenhagen, Oslo, Stavanger, Aberdeen, Newcastle and back to London raising an incredible £593,000. Their fundraising endeavours over the years have helped support medical research and purchase vital healthcare equipment for Sheffield Children’s Hospital, Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research, Action Against Cancer and Bloodwise, as well as lots of local initiatives through the Dransfield Foundation. Anna Kirk, Senior Fundraising Manager, said: “We have been totally overwhelmed by the enthusiasm and commitment of the Dransfield team. “Their challenge for this year was a big one and once again it yielded a truly outstanding result. “They can be assured that their efforts are appreciated by everybody at St Luke’s and that the money they have raised will make a massive difference to all our patients and their families”. The completion of the ride in 2022 coincided with Dransfield Properties’ 30th year in business. The award-winning company owns and manages successful retail, leisure and mixeduse centres across the UK.

MP urges water firm to put more profits into upgrades after Sheffield gas outage Olivia Blake says not enough of Yorkshire Water’s £242m profits used for infrastructure after gas network flooded A private water company responsible for maintaining a 50-year-old asbestos-cement pipe that burst and left thousands of people in Sheffield without gas should spend “much more” of its £242m annual profits upgrading its infrastructure, an MP has said. Olivia Blake, the Labour MP for Sheffield Hallam, said Yorkshire Water had “very deep pockets” and should properly compensate everyone affected in the Stannington and Malin Bridge area of Sheffield, as well as invest vastly more of its profits in replacing old pipes at the end of their lifespan.

According to its annual performance report, in 2021-22, Yorkshire Water made £242.3m operating profit on a turnover of £1.18bn. The company said it spent £434.1m “acquiring, maintaining, and enhancing assets and infrastructure”. It paid out £52.6m in dividends, which a spokesperson said were “payments to its holding company to cover operating costs and service costs for debt held at holding company level”. Yorkshire Water has so far agreed to an automatic £30 payment to all affected customers in Sheffield to go towards excess energy costs. It is also inviting households to claim for additional costs incurred as well as water damage via a form on its website.

Local News Sheffielders invited to have their say on 2023 budget proposals Consultation on SCC budget proposals for 2023/24 is now open and the council want to hear from as many local people as possible by 13 January 2023. In March 2023, Sheffield City Council will set a budget and the Council Tax level for the financial year April 2023 to March 2024. This is the first budget that will be set under the council’s new committee system. This means that councillors from all political parties have had their say on spending priorities for the year ahead. We want to hear Sheffielders’ thoughts on the budget proposals that have been proposed by councillors through their new policy committees. Like most local authorities across the country, Sheffield is once again facing a very challenging financial position. After years of government cuts, austerity measures and the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, the council faced a shortfall of £79million. Committees have been asked to make significant savings in their areas to help balance the council’s budget for the next year. The budget proposals also consider the level of Council Tax for the coming year. In the Autumn

Statement, Government set out their funding for councils for the year ahead which included enabling councils to raise Council Tax by up to 5% (3% core and 2% Adult Social Care Precept). Council Tax now makes up a quarter of the extra money that Government has made available for councils next year.

Family business raises money for cancer charity A family-run restaurant in north Sheffield has just raised an amazing amount of money for a local cancer charity.

We want to hear what the people of Sheffield think of these proposals, including the specific proposals for key areas such as transport, housing and communities, parks and leisure.

McGilveray’s Restauarant & Bar, in Fox Valley, Stocksbridge have raised £2000 for Weston Park.

Feedback from consultation will help shape the final proposals that will then be debated by all councillors at Full Council in March 2023 when the budget will be agreed.

Alan McGilveray told Look Local “ We have had quite a few of our regular guests or some of their family succumbed to Cancer. So we decided to do our bit to help.”

Councillor Bryan Lodge, CoChair of the Finance Sub-Committee said “Times are tough across the board and local authorities are certainly feeling the strain too. The cost-of-living crisis and rising inflation on top of a decade of government austerity measures has left us to make some seriously difficult financial decisions to balance next year’s budget.

Aviva team take on the St Luke’s volunteering challenge

STAFF from the Sheffield offices of insurance company Aviva took time out from the paperwork to join the team at the St Luke’s Hospice Crookes shop.

“Our volunteering session at St Luke’s was a great experience and very different to our usual day job,” said Aviva’s Ellen Ryan. “It was interesting to hear all the work St Luke’s does for people on end of life and palliative care and also the support they provide to families of those people as well. “It was great to be working as a team, knowing that we could be helping to make a difference to someone’s life.

St Luke’s Volunteer Development Manager Francesca Bradshaw commented: “The Aviva team really threw themselves into the volunteering experience. “Volunteering with the St Luke’s retail team really is a great team building experience and we would be happy to talk to any companies who want to join us and help make a difference to the lives of our patients and their families.” For further information on all St Luke’s volunteering opportunities call 0114 235 7548 or email: volunteer@hospicesheffield. co.uk

SHEFFIELD UNIVERSITY SPIN-OUT SECURES £4M FUNDING A Sheffield University spin-out that designs high-performance infrared sensors has secured £4m in seed funding from a host of technology investors. How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These QHHG WR EH ¿OOHG LQ ZLWK QXPEHUV WKDW complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.

Your Letters Gardening

Time to plan your garden

Where is the plan for the Upper Don Valley? The new year is a time for looking ahead and planning for the future. After years of delay Sheffield Council will begin consultation on its Draft Local Plan next week, which will allocate sites for housing development across the city. I for one will continue to fight for the protection of our green spaces and urge the Council to focus on ‘brownfield’ development instead.

Where is the plan:

Gardens can cost, so try to keep things simple and where possible reuse, recycle or come up with money saving ideas that can help you create the garden of your dreams regardless of resources or space. So, thrifty tip for the month is …get your tools sorted before the gardening season gets into full swing. You don’t need masses of tools just a few good ones – the best you can afford – or keep an eye out for bargains in second hand shops or stalls … making sure that the metal parts are in good shape. You will need a good spade (preferably with a wooden handle that comes up to your hip in height), a fork and a hoe. Plus a pair of secateurs is essential, as is a watering can. If you have space a wheelbarrow is also handy. If you are container gardening then a hand trowel and fork are a must. The rest you can improvise … pencils for dibbers, yoghurt pots and plastic food trays for seeds and cuttings, large plastic bottles for cloches, etc. You can also make tools last longer by wiping them with a rag dabbed with oil after use. Keep them sharp with a sharpener stone or the sharpener you use for your carving knives - and don’t leave them out in the rain or snow. Being snow-aware in the garden can not only help with the longevity of equipment, it can also stop extensive plant damage which means you don’t have to spend money on repairs or replacements. Advice from the RHS (Royal Horticultural Society) is to shake or brush heavy snow from conifers, shrubs and hedges to prevent branches breaking. When it comes to turf and borders a covering of snow provides insulation from the cold so it’s best left in place. You should avoid walking on frozen and snow-covered lawns as this damages the grass, causing unsightly brown footprints to appear after the thaw. One of the plants we love to see at this time of year is the perfectly formed Snowdrop. Common snowdrops are hardy and fairly easy to grow with many beautiful species to choose from. If you’re hoping to create an impressive swathe in your garden then try Galanthus nivalis. It’s the most common species because it self-seeds and spreads very quickly, which means you get to enjoy your snowy white display sooner rather than later. Always buy pots of snowdrops ‘in the green’ – so when they have finished flowering but the leaves are still green and intact. Or you could lift and divide any large clumps from a different location or garden, which would give you a supply of snowdrops for free. Plant them out as soon as possible in partial shade (such as under a tree) and in moist but well-drained soil. You can add some compost or leaf mould to give added nutrients. Plant to the same depth they were previously grown, or around four inches/10cm deep and space clumps about six inches/15cm apart. Water them in and leave. In addition to Galanthus nivalis you could also consider varieties such as ‘Staffan’ – a vigorous, single flowerer producing two flower stems from each bulb and ‘Atkinsil’ – which has large slender scented flowers with a heart-shaped mark on the inner segments. The RHS Gardener’s Checklist for January…. Plant bare-rooted trees, shrubs and fruit Check mulches. Add scented winter flowering plants. Prune apple and pear trees. Force rhubarb crowns. Avoid compacting your soil by working on wet soil. Deadhead container displays. Reduce watering of citrus plants. Plant forced Christmas hyacinths outdoors. Recycle or shred your Christmas tree

However, it is clear that the Upper Don Valley has already accepted its fair share of new housing, including Oughtibridge Mill, the Deepcar Bloor Homes site, Wood Royd and part of Hollin Busk. What we need now is a proper infrastructure plan that addresses the projected additional demands on local schools, health services and transport.

January is a great time to get organised in the garden and make plans for the year ahead. You can start planning what plants you might like to add or seeds you might like to grow in spring and what materials you need to do this, plus what kind of budget you have.

- to accommodate the needs of over 1000 new households including many young couples and families? - for transport and active travel to ensure that new residents can access shops, health services, education and leisure without the need for short car journeys? - to join up the various sections of the Upper Don Trail and provide a safe, off-road route linking major housing developments between Fox Valley and Hillsborough? - to support existing and new businesses to benefit from local trade and serve the needs of new local residents? I look forward to a bright future for the Upper Don Valley – time for Sheffield Council to get on board. David Chinchen Oughtibridge

Ukraine Appeal Thank you for sharing Bolsterstone Ukrainian appeal in Look Local before Christmas. We were overwhelmed with the support from the local community. In total we have packed 40 boxes of warm clothes, which will be sent to Ukraine this month. Some people didn't have clothes to donate but called in and donated money and boxes towards the shipping. We are grateful and thankful for every donation and for the volunteers who gave up their time over Christmas to sort and pack them. On the 14th January 2023 at 7.30pm there will be a Race Night at The Castle Inn, Bolsterstone, to raise money for our appeal. Please come along and support if you are able. Kind regards Bolsterstone Village Hall Trustees.

Mortomley Close resurfacing Dear Sir/Madam During last year’s local election campaign, Matt Wilson (the Labour Candidate) and myself were made aware of a promise made to residents on Mortomley Close with respect to repairing the road surface following the construction of the new sports facilities in High Green in 2015. We subsequently made enquiries at the Full Council meeting in March 2022, and I asked further questions to the Cooperative Executive in the summer of 2022. In spite of a letter being sent to residents in 2015 promising to repair the road, the work had still not been completed in March 2022. Matt and I therefore asked questions at the Full council in March, and I followed this up with a question to the Co-operative executive during the summer. I subsequently followed the matter up with the Julie Grocutt, Deputy Leader of the council in the Autumn and the matter was discussed at the Communities, Parks, and Leisure Policy Committee on December 20th I attended this meeting as an observer and am pleased to report that all the issues me and Matt had raised were discussed and the committee has confirmed that the promised repair work will now take place. Alleviate NHS pressures “The current situation in the NHS is intolerable and unsustainable, both for our patients and the hard-working staff desperately trying to keep up with incredibly high levels of demand. “The BMA has repeatedly invited the Government to sit down and talk about the pressures on our health service, but their silence is deafening. It is disingenuous for the Prime Minister to talk about ‘backing the NHS’ in his New Year message, when his own Health Secretary is failing to discuss how this crisis can be fixed. “Instead of criticising frontline doctors, nurses and paramedics for wanting to be valued and given the facilities to provide treatment and care, the Government should deliver on its obligations to the public. It is just not true that the cost of resolving this mess cannot be afforded by this country. This is a political choice and patients are dying unnecessarily because of that choice. “The Government must step up and take immediate action. Without intervention, waiting lists will continue to grow, patients will continue to suffer, and staff will continue to leave. The future of the NHS is balanced on a knife-edge; it is solely within Government’s gift to pull this back from the brink.” Professor Phil Banfield Chair of BMA council

College expands its Business provision Barnsley College is launching six new part-time Business courses, starting in January 2023. Potential students who are looking to develop their business administration skills will benefit from studying the Level 2 Principles of Business Adminis-

tration Certificate. The 10-week course is studied online, ideal for anyone looking to increase their skills around any existing commitments. Over a period of seven weeks, students will learn invaluable knowledge and skills relating to health and safety, identifying and controlling workplace hazards and legislation. This short course is relevant to every workplace, but it is ideally suited to managers, supervisors, or anybody with health and safety management responsibilities or those embarking on a career in health and safety. Angela Kerley, Head of Business and Management at Barnsley College said:

PROFESSOR BRIAN COX INSPIRES AT SCHOOL EVENT

Gregory’s Wheel

The Stocksbridge & District History Society has received many inquiries regarding the ‘whereabouts’ of the Gregory’s Wheel since it was abandoned by the developer in the area where the stables are at Hollin Busk Flats. Dennis Pindar told Look Local “I am pleased to confirm that, with the land owner’s permission, we were able to go on site and retrieve the broken wheel and this is now in safe storage in Deepcar.” Over 600 South Yorkshire pupils were inspired by Britain’s leading physicist Professor Brian Cox at an exciting event organised by The Work-wise Foundation in partnership with Well North Enterprises, held at Gulliver’s Valley in Rotherham recently. Professor Brian Cox CBE, Britain’s leading physicist and science communicator and Co-Founder of Science Summer School, said at the event: “Here in the UK we need significantly more scientists and engineers, we know that.

“And so, there are huge opportunities out there, but you may not know what those opportunities are. You may not have considered that you could be a biologist or an astronomer or a space craft engineer. There are hundreds, probably thousands of potential careers, futures that you could choose. The idea of the Summer School is to see if there is anything that people talk about today that interests you. Also, really importantly I think, it’s an opportunity for you to make connections with people in industry, people in universities, in colleges, appren-

ticeships; a whole range of things that you could possibly do.” The students were introduced to the wide range of careers in science, technology, engineering, arts and maths (STEAM) as there is a growing need for professionals in these industries. This year the event saw 12 businesses, delivering workshops and inspiring speeches to develop awareness of STEAM subjects and employment opportunities for young people within the region.

The original iconic wheel and headgear was at the top of a sealed off airshaft to the Gregory’s mine. The headgear was used mainly for ‘spoil’ removal, whilst the main mine products were transported down the main mine road to the works down Carr Road. It is the intention of the Society to possibly have the wheel repaired and erected on a headgear or monument that commemorates this iconic heritage wheel. We hope to work with interested partners to have it erected in a suitable location, as close as possible to the original.

Yorkshire Amateurs season had got off to a very slow start with a squad of youngsters, in bottom place with 7 points and 9 points from safety from their first 21 games. They had managed only one win, a 3-2

The Ammers kicked off straight to a Church player, Church cleared and created space through the middle and then dominated the early exchanges. Goal 16 minutes. A long clearance found a cluster of Church players on the edge of the box. A looped ball was hooked in by Wayne Hughes under heavy pressure from 12 yards. Hughes limped off immediately after the restart and was replaced by Tom Brennan. Church continued to prosper down both flanks and through the

middle, they also snuffed out the Ammers attacks with ease. A scrappy first half ended with Church having had the lion’s share of possession, but they struggled to convert their dominance into goals. Church kicked off the second-half and gave the ball away, the Ammers then had a 3 minute spell of pressure. Church withstood this and started to dominate possession again. Goal 63 minutes. A Church free kick from the edge of the Ammers’s box led to a scrappy passage of play. The ball was drilled into Josh Brown who beat his defender, the partly blocked shot then was then blasted home by Nathan Keightley from 6 yards on the left of the goal. Goal 69 minutes. Cameron Simpson fought hard for the ball on the left of midfield. He outpaced the defender and raced towards the box. He dazzled the

defence with his footwork and ran along the 6 yard line to finish low to the right of goal. Ryan Hallsworth replaced Josh Brown after 75 minutes. Nathan Keightley was replaced by Reece High and Cameron Simpson was replaced by Jack Roberts shortly afterwards. Church continued to dominate and ran through the middle more than once, but did not convert. Full Time Yorkshire Amateurs 0-3 PCFC A difficult pitch was partly to blame for a rather scrappy match. Church will be delighted with 3 points away from home. Church’s Xmas fixture saw the team make the short trip to Emley and race into a four-goal lead before being pegged back to 4-4 after Danny Howes was sent off. Fixtures Saturday 7th January v Frickley Athletic (h) Kick off 3-00 pm.

Graihagh showing good form There was little racing over the weekend for runners so parkruns came to the fore with events being run around the region on both Saturday and Christmas day morning. One of the stand out performance was from junior runner Graihagh Turner who clocked a personal best time of 19-10 at the Penistone parkrun which also gave her first lady back despite being in the ladies under15 age category. Those from Penistone gaining first places in various age group categories were George Parr (under20 men), Phil Hinchliffe (over50 men), Finn Pepper (under14 boys), Suzanne McGill (under45 women), Rachael Mayston (over50 ladies) and Martyn Cartwright (over75 men) who in finishing completed his 100th parkrun. There was no Penistone parkrun on Christmas day but the Barnsley parkrun was run on both Saturday and Christmas day. At the Saturday event Job vacancies

STEELS WIN DERBY DAY CLASH Stocksbridge PS 1-0 Sheffield FC

Match report by Adam Allcroft

chances to seal a 1-0 win over rivals Sheffield FC. The only reason Stocksbridge weren’t ahead in the first half was thanks to the heroics of Jordan Pierrepont in the Sheffield goal. Steels got through with some great play which allowed Lewis Macaskill to put the ball into the box. Tomas Poole moved onto it and volleyed the ball goalwards. Pierrepont moved quick and with a stunning acrobatic save kept the game goalless. Pierrepont had to be at his best shortly after this big chance to keep Sheffield in the game. Making his first return to Bracken Moor following his departure in the summer, Reece Fielding had been playing well but slipped, allowing Poole to rob the ball off of him and advance on the goal. He looked to curl the ball around Pierrepont but he stretched his leg out enough to deflect the ball away from the goal.

After grabbing a thrilling 3-2 Boxing Day win at Ponterfract Collieiries, an in-form Steel faced a tough New Year’s home Fixture against Sheffield FC. Steels however, met firm resistance after an inspired performance from an opposing former player. Eventually they took one of their

At the other end, Sheffield grew into the game and weren’t too far off when a good ball to Marc Newsham was sent just wide at the near post. Their biggest chance came later on when a ball was played forward and Nathan Modest knocked it away from Ben Townsend, who’ll have thought he had both hands on the goal. Modest then had the goal at his mercy but he put the ball across the goal and onto the far post, wasting a great opportunity. This meant the first half would end goalless. Stocksbridge got off to a good start in the second-half, and it was one of their former players

almost gave Steels a big helping hand. A wonderful ball was sent in from the left wing and it was Rory Coleman, someone who scored plenty of goals in his Stocksbridge days, who came close to turning it into his own goal. It was Pierrepont who made a late diving save to stop an embarrassing own goal. Steels continued to press forward and a resolute Sheffield FC defence would continue to frustrate them. In the end, Stocksbridge’s attackers ended up having to take shots from distance. Poole and Macaskill were two players that ended up having goes from distance but they ended up going well over. Eventually though, Stocksbridge were able to break down the defence. Macaskill was having a great game with Sam Greenhouse really struggling to deal with his ability to change direction on a dime. This time, it finally ended in a goal as Macaskill cut inside from the left wing and curled the ball into the back of the net, though it required assistance from the far post. Sheffield tried to push and get the equaliser and at one point, they did come close. The Oldest Club had some success from set pieces during the game and this was their best one as Fielding almost punished his former side after winning the header. However a relatively untested Townsend made the clutch save, confirming Stocksbridge’s derby win. Next home fixture: Saturday 14 January, 3pm KO v Carlton Town.
