MP fights for online child safety Local MP Miriam Cates is leading efforts in Parliament to make tech bosses criminally responsible for their platforms failing to keep children safe online. In an amendment to the Online Safety Bill which is currently making its way through the House of Commons, the MP for Penistone and Stocksbridge is trying to make it a criminal offence for senior managers at the big tech firms to not prevent children from accessing extreme, indecent, and harmful content. This comes following recent high-profile cases in which social media platforms were ruled to have contributed to the death of children who had viewed material online promoting suicide and self-harm. Under the existing proposals tech companies will be legally required to prevent children from accessing a wide range of harmful content, but the punishment for failing to do so will be limited to corporate fines. Mrs Cates

wants this changed to make individual managers and executives criminally liable if the companies they run break this law. Commenting on her amendment, Miriam Cates said: “We have seen repeated failures of big tech to protect children from the horrors of sexual exploitation, adult material, and content that draws them into self-harm and suicide, and sadly the rules as they stand will not stop this. “The only way to secure the change we desperately need is to make senior directors personally responsible for failures to protect children.” Those found guilty under the plans could be fined or face up to two years in prison. The amendment comes as research for the NSPCC found that more than 80% of adults would support senior managers being held criminally liable if children are hurt by social media companies failing to protect them online.

Courier killed in Deepcar laughing gas heist, court told A delivery man was killed when he was run over by a panicked colleague during a gun-point robbery, a court has heard. Nadeem Qureshi (pictured) was hit by a reversing van as his co-worker attempted to flee a gang of armed men trying to steal a consignment of nitrous oxide in 2019, writes the BBC. It is alleged the men placed a fake order to the catering firm Mr Qureshi and his colleagues worked for to lure them to Deepcar, Sheffield. The three defendants deny manslaughter, robbery and a firearms offence. On Friday, Sheffield Crown Court heard the incident came just two weeks after Mr Qureshi's housemate, Kelvin Giles, claimed he had been kidnapped in a similar incident. Outlining the case against the defendants - Arron Hartigan, 25, Jake Lakin, 22, and Callum Rutherford, 26 - the prosecution said Mr Qureshi had been working for a Bolton-based firm, delivering nitrous oxide canisters across the north of England.

The gas, usually used in the catering business to carbonate drinks or in whipped cream canisters, can also be used as a form of psychoactive drug, the court heard.
He said he had been kidnapped for more than three hours and feared for his life while making a similar delivery of nitrous oxide in Salford, Greater Manchester.
On 24 July 2019, Mr Qureshi, 40, from Manchester, had travelled with his colleague, Sean Wright, in a van driven by Massimo Rizzelli to Station Road, Deepcar.
He said he was tied up and had his van and its content stolen by five men armed with knives, a hatchet and a hammer.
At the drop-off site, a white 4x4 vehicle approached the men and a gunman in the vehicle ordered them to get out of their van, pointing a pistol towards them. Mr Qureshi got out and was standing beside the van when Mr Rizzelli suddenly reversed the vehicle, hitting Mr Qureshi and causing him "catastrophic" injuries of which he would later die. The court heard Mr Rizzelli drove away from the scene pursued by the armed gang, but they eventually gave up the chase. Deliveries 'too dangerous' Giving evidence Mr Giles told the jury how he too had been approached by armed men while working for the same firm.
Following the incident Mr Qureshi took over Mr Giles' deliveries, despite Mr Giles telling him "not to do it because it was too dangerous", he said. "[I] just thought he was doing it for a bit of extra money. I said he was stupid for doing it after what happened to me," he told the court. Mr Hartigan, of no fixed abode, Mr Lakin, of Smithy Moor Avenue, Stocksbridge, and Mr Rutherford, of Lee Avenue, Deepcar, all deny manslaughter, conspiracy to commit robbery and having an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear of violence. The trial continues.

FOOTBALL CLUB COLLECTS FOR FOOD BANK
Stocksbridge Park Steels are thanking everyone who has kindly donated to a Food Bank campaign, run by the club and its many players and supporters. Roger Gissing, Commercial Director said “At our last home game v Sheffield Football Club, the visitors brought several bags of food and donated cash to boost the funds, and prior to Kick Off, we were able to present a cheque and boxes of food to the local Food Bank. It's been a wonderful success and shows the kindness and support people have for each other.
A 15-year-old boy has been charged with assaulting an emergency worker, after police were called to a Sheffield street over safety concerns, writes Robert Cumber for the Sheffield Star. Officers were called to an incident of ‘concern for safety’ on Deerlands Avenue, Parson Cross, on Friday, January 6, at around 3.45pm. A spokesperson for South Yorkshire Police said it was reported that a teenage boy at first fled from the officers, before he ‘became aggressive towards them and assaulted one of them’.
Ian Lucraft from the Stocksbridge food bank told Look Local " The Food Bank is extremely grateful for the support from our local football team and its fans. It will help us in our daily work of supporting people who are in difficult places. It will also help us develop the food bank as it plans to create a community food hub and community café. We have been thrilled to receive more offers of help and more volunteers. The town is really supporting us and we are encouraged by that support to feel that we want to support each other. "
A 15-year-old boy from Sheffield, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was charged with assault of an emergency worker. He was bailed and is due to appear before the youth court in Sheffield on Wednesday, January 18.

The story of the Wantley Dragon to live on... Lots of locals will know about the legend of 'The Dragon of Wantley' and the Wooden/Stone dragon at the top of Bitholmes Wood (renamed Wantley Dragon Woods circa 2001).
Local resident Dan Cunningham, (pictured 3rd from left) was involved with celebrating the 300th anniversary of the writing of the (1685) Comic Broadside ballad back in 1985. Whilst the memory of the event is very vague, the Dragon has always held a special place for the Stocksbridge resident. This sculpture over the last number of years has become run down. Dan said “About 9 months ago I started a quest to get it replaced. For a long(ish) time I got nowhere with emails not getting responded to and running into dead end after dead end. Fast forward to today where I met with officials from the Woodland Trust and our local MP I discussed my personal history with the site/story and put across my ideas I'd like to see done and possible options. This seemed to be met with the backing of all parties involved with a reasonable plan in place and with some funding already secured hopefully by the summer we should see the old rotten Dragon
head returned into the woodland and a lovely new one put in place. I also discussed with Miriam Cates MP how I felt it was really important local children should be taught about local history in schools as I was, it's a real boost to local pride and community spirit. This is something we will continue to discuss going forward. MP Miriam Cates said “It was fantastic to visit Wharncliffe Side this morning, to meet representatives from the Woodland Trust and Dan Cunningham to speak about upgrades to the Wantley Dragon carving above More Hall Lane. The site was the stage for the ballad ‘The Dragon of Wantley’ written in 1685, which detailed the defeat of a dragon by More of More Hall protected by his Sheffield steel armour. I’m looking forward to working with the Woodland Trust, residents and potential funders to support the renovation project, which aims to replace the now dilapidated wooden dragon head carving and add a new information sign for visitors. It’s important that we keep our heritage alive, and it’s projects like this which help to maintain it for our future generations.

As an added bonus, anyone buying an item to be framed will receive a ten per cent discount at the adjoining Cupola Framing – so hold onto that receipt! The sale, which will run until Saturday, February 4, will feature everything from jewellery, ceramics, glass, textiles, printmaking, painting, drawing and photography to sculpture. It’s an opportunity for artists to sell off older, not quite perfect or experimental work at bargain prices and for art lovers to enjoy a good old rummage to uncover that hidden gem. “We all enjoy a bargain – I know I do! The 'Under The Bed Sale' offers art lovers the chance to find original art at the fraction of the price you would normally expect.,” said Karen Sherwood, Director and founder.of Cupola gallery. She explained that the sale’s concept originated many years ago when she visited an artist friend, Lyn Hodnett, who proceeded to pull out a load of original artwork, quite literally
from under her bed., as examples of older and early works. When asked if she would exhibit it, Lyn said ‘no’ as they were out of date and no longer relevant. However, when asked if she would sell them, Lyn answered enthusiastically in the affirmative. So after a bit of discussion between the friends, they came up with the idea of the Under The Bed sale and it’s been a hit ever since – and even copied by other galleries. New items will arrive throughout the sale period so one visit to the Cupola’s sale may not be enough. Artwork for the sale is totally unselected and open to amateurs and professionals across all media, but must be entirely original. Added Karen: “The youngest contributor to date was aged eight years with the oldest being 97 years.” The most expensive pieces in the bonanza are capped at £350. Any artists wishing to take part please contact the gallery via email info@cupolagallery.com The gallery, at 178a Middlewood Road, S6 1TD, will be open during the sale from 10am6pm Monday ‘til Saturday and from noon-4pm on Sundays.

The event was a huge success and is an important part of the school curriculum in both Health & Social Care and Hospitality - it also gives the students first-hand experience organising and running an event. Sian Staveley, Curriculum Leader of Health & Social Care said “The intergenerational event was beneficial for everyone, there were huge health and social benefits.

LOCAL HERITAGE LIST
Can you help identify our much loved places? Many of our interesting or unique old buildings and sites are protected from inappropriate changes or damage by being designated by Historic England as scheduled monuments (of national importance) or listed buildings. So there are 43 scheduled archaeological sites in Sheffield, which includes in this area for example the Bolsterstone Glasshouse, Bailey Hill motte and bailey castle in High Bradfield and Bar Dyke linear earthwork on the Mortimer Road. There are also around 1,200 listed buildings in Sheffield and these require listed building consent to make any changes, even quite minor ones.
South Yorkshire Archaeology Service successfully bid for gov-
ernment funds to set up the South Yorkshire Local Heritage List, which launched in September 2021. The aim of the List is to enable everyone to submit details of buildings and sites that are important to their community, and which contribute to the distinctiveness and history of South Yorkshire, by taking photos, doing some research and uploading them to the website. These are then open for comment by the public and assessed by a panel, before Council approval. The significance of an asset included in the List will be taken into account in planning decisions.

How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These QHHG WR EH ¿OOHG LQ ZLWK QXPEHUV WKDW complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.

YourLetters Thank you On the 24th December a mobile and purse was handed into Tesco, Kilner Way. Just want to say a big thank you.
Housing plan Where was the plan in the first place, David Chinchen says Upper Don Valley has already accepted its fair share of new housing including Deepcar Bloor homes site, Wood Royd Road and part of Hollin Busk? Mr Hinchey says where was plan and concerns raised with our local councillors here in Stockbridge before it went before in Feb 2021 when it was refused. Note Look Local issue 17th November 2022. 5 hour meeting, no decision was made on the Wood Ror putting the cart before the horse.oyd Road application with many councillors abstaining On Tuesday 6 th December Ref 19/03890/OUT in Sheffield town hall at 1pm, it didn’t take 5 hours at this meeting ,it was passed in 30 minutes and those who passed it did not answer lots of questions over concerns raised in November which lasted 5 hours. One of the points raised in November was access for emergency vehicles, only 3 weeks later it only takes 30 minutes for Sheffield planning meeting, with some fresh faces. Mr David Chinchen’s letter in issue 1251 talks about –and provide a safe off road route- does this include Wood Royd Road or is it a case of after the horse has bolted or putting the cart before the horse. David Chinchen says protection of our green spaces and urges the council to focus on Brownfield development instead.?? I might be a bit colour blind but what colour was Hollin Busk field and was it not the same colour as 9/1103890/OUT, were these councillors on board, where is the plan. Local knowledge might future but people making our decisions in Sheffield spoil and destroy our life here by what should not have been passed in the first place and which did not address additional demands on our local schools or health services. Its 2023, I look forward to not seeing our green spaces being taken away because its not wish here in Deepcar but Santa arrived early when Sheffield Planning Committee granted Bloor homes to get on board, can Sheffield Councillors sleep at night, making our local area like a city centre with no infrastructure plan in place, here in Deepcar more houses, more cars more congestion here on Wood Royd Road. David Chinchen says after years of delay Sheffield Council will begin consultation on its draft local plan next week. Shouldn’t this have been done in the first place before the meeting on the 6th December, were all these additional demands taken into account on the 6th December- NO. Where is the plan, it was passed by people in Sheffield and not by local residents who it affects, our roads are overcrowded now by cars going to Fox Valley, its also time for our leaders to recognise 3000 new houses on top, our leaders here have not been on board over the safety of our roads. MP slams govt for their catastrophic failings on the NHS Louise Haigh MP for Sheffield Heeley has slammed the government for their catastrophic failings on the NHS. For months we have seen record NHS waiting times, with ambulances forced to queue outside A and E departments across the country for hours on end. Leaving many people, who were in urgent need of an ambulance, unable to access one.
me how his wife waited more than eight hours for an ambulance, after she had collapsed on the kitchen floor. He was unable to lift her because he, himself was recovering from heart surgery. “They called 999 three times and each time were told that the service was very busy, and they couldn’t get an ambulance to them. They called for an ambulance at 6pm and it eventually arrived at 1.50am.
The NHS is in crisis with too few doctors and nurses to fulfil the unprecedented demand, meaning many are unable to treat patients safely and on time.
“My constituent tells me that he does not blame the ambulance service for this or the NHS, they do an amazing job, in very difficult circumstances – but he does ask, ‘what’s going on with the NHS?’
During the pandemic, we saw NHS staff going the extra mile to ensure that people were safe and treated. Many NHS workers are now facing ‘burn out’ with demand for health care through the roof.
“The government must do the right thing and address this as the national emergency it is. The longer they wait, more people will lose their lives, unnecessarily and many more will face life changing consequences – ones that can be avoided.”
Yesterday, a Tory MP admitted in Parliament that only Labour has a long-term plan for the NHS, whilst the Government are failing. Louise Haigh MP for Sheffield Heeley said: “I’ve been contacted by constituents who have experienced firsthand the crisis that is unfolding within the NHS. One person told
A Labour government will undertake one of the biggest expansions of the NHS workforce in history. They will train the staff needed to provide care for patients and this would be paid for by abolishing the non-dom tax status.
Junior doctors in England to walk out If a ballot for industrial action is successful, says the British Medical Association.
The BMA has today told the Government that, if a ballot for industrial action is successful, junior doctors will begin their action with a 72hour full walkout in March. The ballot across England begins on Monday 9th January; the BMA is still urging the Secretary of State for Health to meet with doctors and negotiate a solution to avoid the need for industrial action. But Steve Barclay is the first Health Secretary for over 50 years to continue to ignore all invitations from the BMA to meet with doctors, making attempts to find a negotiated settlement virtually impossible. Successive governments have overseen fifteen years of real terms pay cuts for junior doctors in England, which amounts to a staggering and unjustifiable 26.1% decline in pay since 2008/09. The BMA has repeatedly called on the Government to reverse these pay cuts, to keep doctors in the NHS and alleviate the staffing crisis which is preventing the NHS from tackling record waiting lists and giving patients the care they need. Patients are suffering and exhausted staff are burning out and leaving the NHS and yet this Government fails to see the crisis in front of it, ignoring all the evidence to the contrary and preferring to treat the public as fools with assurances that the NHS has all the resources it needs. Ministers have ignored all requests to meet and discuss doctors’ pay with the BMA. With the Government’s door firmly shut to dialogue, let alone negotiations, the Association says there is no other option left than to ballot junior doctors in England for strike action.
Dr Vivek Trivedi and Dr Robert Laurenson, co-chairs of the BMA junior doctors committee, said: “The Prime Minister says his door and that of the Health Secretary, are ‘always open.’ But after more than a decade of pay cuts no offer to restore our pay has been made, and all our calls to meet, and letters to the Health Secretary and his immediate predecessors, have been ignored. When we are faced with such resolute ongoing silence, and there is no agreed settlement on the table, then we are left with no choice but to act. “Junior doctors are not worth a quarter less than they were fifteen years ago nor do they deserve to be valued so little by their own Government. Pay erosion, exhaustion and despair are forcing junior doctors out of the NHS, pushing waiting lists even higher as patients suffer needlessly. The Government’s refusal to address fifteen years of pay erosion has given junior doctors no choice but to ballot for industrial action. If the Government won’t fight for our health service, then we will. “It is particularly galling for junior doctors to see the government repeatedly justify huge real terms pay cuts for NHS staff by claiming that these have been made by so-called ‘independent’ pay review bodies, free from government interference. The reality is that the doctors’ pay review body has been constrained by political interference for more than a decade. Even after recommendations have been made to increase junior doctors’ pay, the Government has completely ignored them and has asked the pay review body to completely exclude junior doctors from its recommendations.2 When even the pay review process – broken as it is - is telling ministers to act, you know something has gone seriously wrong.”
AMBULANCE WORKERS TO STRIKE AGAIN
Almost 1,500 GMB Union ambulance workers across Yorkshire will strike on Wednesday 11 January. Paramedics, Emergency Care Assistants, call handlers and other staff will stage major pickets in Sheffield, Bradford, Leeds, Huddersfield and actoss the region [See notes for full list of pickets and timings] Workers across the ambulance services and some NHS Trusts have voted to strike over the Government’s imposed 4 per cent pay award - another massive real terms pay cut. To end this dispute, GMB needs a concrete offer to help resolve the NHS’s crushing recruitment and retention crisis Rachel Harrison, GMB National Secretary, said: "Ambulance workers across England and Wales will go on strike for the second time today. “GMB cancelled a planned strike over the Christmas period to say thank you to the public for their incredible support. “It also allowed time for the Government to talk to us about pay, but Ministers have dithered and postured, wasting valuable time. "To end this dispute, GMB needs a concrete offer to help resolve the NHS’s crushing recruitment and retention crisis. "The public expects the Government to treat this dispute seriously – it's time they got on with it.”

Adam Raga claimed a sensational, white-knuckle win Adam Raga – TRRS claimed a sensational, white-knuckle win on Saturday night as the first DL12 Indoor Trial threatened to blow the roof off Sheffield’s Utilita Arena.
Martyn, Marcelli and Raga all then failed to get through the mammoth Michelin tyres, but Busto dragged himself back into contention with a miraculous single-mark ride to set up the final-section showdown.
The forty-year-old Spaniard emerged on top of an adrenalinfuelled final with the result only decided on the very last section of the night – the super-steep Hondasponsored climb from the arena floor to the concourse level over four huge geometric-shaped metal blocks.
After Martyn failed, Raga was next up knowing a clean ride would be good enough for glory. He had fived it in his Heat, but this time around his silky skills shone through and he skipped his way to the top to become the first-ever DL12 Indoor Trial Champion.
Raga’s victory completed his Steel City hat-trick, but it has been a long time coming – the six-time World Champion’s first win at the venue came all the way back in 2005 and his second was in 2016! “I am super-happy – this is amazing,” he said. “I had back surgery one month and one week ago and I have worked very hard to recover. “To come here and win such a difficult event is fantastic. My last win here was in 2016 and my first was in 2005 and now I have made it three. “It has always been a difficult arena for me and at the opening indoor event of the season always you are very nervous and it is one of the most difficult so I am very, very happy to win.” The action started with Qualification which comprised timed runs across a combination of skips, sleepers and barrels with Jaime
Marcelli also went clean before Busto made sure of second with a precise, faultless ride. It is only fitting that the final word goes to the man who put his name to an event that looks set to get even bigger and better. Busto – GASGAS the only rider to break the ten-second barrier.
teen, four marks behind Gabriel Marcelli – Repsol Honda.
Home hero Toby Martyn – Montesa, who like Busto was making his debut for a new team, had the capacity crowd on their feet in second ahead of thirty-two-time and reigning World Champion Toni Bou – Repsol Honda with Raga back in sixth.
Bou’s total included two big fives and his crash on the Rock Oil rocks of section three resulted in a heel injury that forced the thirteen-time Sheffield winner to withdraw from the final.
Six all-new, custom-built sections challenged the nine-strong field from the get-go with Busto topping the Heat on a score of eight, three ahead of Bou with Raga completing an all-Spanish top-four on nine-
With the sections run in reverse – and proving much tougher – for the Final, Busto took an immediate lead as Martyn, Raga and Marcelli all failed to make it through the imposing Inch Perfect logs.
Raga then tied things at the top with an incredible ride on the Vertigo pipes and it remained all square at the halfway mark with the leading pair locked together on a total of eight. The turning point proved to be the race up the Honda climb which allowed the veteran to open a fivemark gap ahead of his twenty-fiveyear-old compatriot and when all four riders incurred maximums on the giant Hope cranks and hubs of section four the end result looked certain with two hazards to go.
“It’s been an amazing night and the finale was absolutely great,” said copromoter Dougie Lampkin. “What a fantastic finish and wow, Adam Raga, forty years old! He spanked them – there is hope for us all! “I am so pleased how it went. The crowd were fantastic and what a great team of people who put this on. Roll on next year.” The second edition of the DL12 Indoor Trial will take place on Saturday 13th January 2024, with tickets due to go on sale soon for what is sure to be another sell out success.

Emma Harvey, Programme Manager for Childcare and Education, Health, Science and Social Care Professions at Barnsley College, said: “Our short courses offer a step back into education for students aged 19 and over. These accredited qualifications are designed to prepare students for their next step into further study, employment or simply just to upskill. “The courses will be delivered over a period of ten weeks through face-to face-learning during the evening.” For more information about the new short courses, visit: www. barnsley.ac.uk/childcare. Penistone athlete Graihagh Turner who competes for Penistone on the fells and Rotherham for cross country won the under15 girls category in a time of 16-29. Her Rotherham teammates packed well meaning she also picked up a team gold medal. The result means that Graihagh will more than likely be selected to compete for Yorkshire at the Inter County championships later in the year. The notoriously tough Trigger fell race took place on Sunday and a number of Penistone athletes took on and completed the race which starts in Marsden in West Yorkshire and finishes in Edale in Derbyshire.
Other Penistone runners finishing were Peter Gray, Sarah Walch, Matt Womersley, Chris Hodgson and Nick Whittingham. Elsewhere some Penistone runners took on the Round Sheffield Run. Lesley Parker claimed sixth place in the ladies over40 category in a time of 1-42-22. Another top ten finisher was Jonathan Bentley who was 8th in the men’s over50 category in 1-29-03. On the parkrun scene there were first places for James Mumford in Halifax, Julia Johnson in Amsterdam and George Parr at Penistone.
A report by Martin Webb Frickley’s kick-off resulted in a clean Church tackle and early signs of Church pressing high. Cameron Simpson then won the ball in defence and set Nathan Keightley free, the ball bobbled just as shot and the chance sailed over the bar. Church had the better of the first 5 minutes.

A poor Frickley clearance fell to Jack Roberts, his cross was finished neatly by Leon Hurles-Brook to centre of the goal. PCFC 1-0 Frickley Goal 10 minutes. A clearance and a lay off to Jordan Coduri resulted in thunderous 20 yard shot that whistled into the far left of goal. PCFC 2-0 Frickley Church piled forward for the next 10 minutes and created numerous chances, but could not convert. Frickley resorted to long clearances. Goal 31 minutes. A great set of Church passes down the right put Keightley in. The defender fell to the floor in a tangle of his
own making. Keightley crossed unchallenged from the 6-yard line and Leon Hurles-Brook flicked the ball into the centre of goal.

Full Time PCFC 5-2 Frickley
Half time PCFC 3-0 Frickley A neat one-two on the edge of the box between Leon Hurles-Brook and Tom Charlesworth set Charlesworth up for a shot from the edge of the box. The keeper could not stop the shot to the right of goal.
Another wonderful goal-fest of a match saw Church win convincingly at home in front of a bumper crowd. Frickley on another day might have scored at least one more of their chances, but so could Church. Church will be delighted to have extended their unbeaten run to 7 which now includes 6 wins.
PCFC 4-0 Frickley
Manager Steve Lenthall
Immediately from the kick off Frickley worked the ball from midfield and a late tackle by the Church defence saw a penalty given. A couple of injuries delayed play.
“Performance wise we just keep improving, today it was about getting a reaction from when we played Frickley at their spot and that’s just what we got.
Goal 63 minutes.
Jordan Coduri as the holding midfielder was superb today and thoroughly deserved the man of the match award which he received.
Goal 58 minutes.
Frickley’s penalty was scored low and hard to the left of goal by Alhassan Keita. Goal 72 minutes. A free kick on the left caused confusion in the Frickley defence. A neat step over by Tom Brennan freed up Tom Charlesworth for a shot. The deflection fell to the on-rushing Ryan Hallsworth who buried the ball from 6 yards out. PCFC 5-1 Frickley Goal minutes 78 minutes. A free kick to Frickley on the left was met beautifully by Eviend Johnsen with a towering header. PCFC 5-2 Frickley Church continued to press forward and Simpson drew another great
Nathan Keightley needs a mention about his work rate today without scoring himself, he’s created the chances for other players We also need a special mention to young Jack Roberts who made his full first team debut today, he grew into the game and dealt with it very well. Stocksbridge Swimmers End 2022 with Smashing Results
Swimmers from Stocksbridge Pentaqua Swimming Club have been celebrating over the holidays after a very successful year achieving smashing results at competitions.
The Yorkshire county championships took place in February and then again in September/October. Across the 2 competitions, Stocksbridge swimmers competed in 172 swims and attained 41 top-ten placings. Phoebe M, Lauren W achieved these, Ursula C, William W, and

After two years of Covid disruptions, a full year of galas took place in 2022, which Stocksbridge swimmers made the most of. The average PB (personal best rate) was over 70% and swimmers competed at local, county, regional and even national level.
15
Fin M came 12th in the British National Championships in the men’s 16 years category for 50m freestyle. Freddy B, Mateo M, Finley M, Logan P, and Paddy N who won 2 silver medals and 1 bronze medal. The club also entered 7 relay teams for the February competition and achieved 3 topten placings. The North East Regionals were hot on the heels of each of the county competitions. The Spring championships
took place in April and May, followed by the Winter competition in November. Qualifying swimmers competed in 63 swims and clocked up 15 top-ten placings including 3 bronze medals for Paddy N, 2 silver medals for Finley M, plus silver and 2 bronze medals for Phoebe M who also won a well-de-
served gold in the 50m breaststroke! During 2022, Stocksbridge Pentaqua also had 4 swimmers qualify for the summer national competitions – an incredible achievement for a small, volunteerlead club! Qualification for the summer nationals is based on rankings, so
the club was thrilled to have one swimmer securing a place in the British Summer Championships, 2 swimmers earning a place in the Swim England National Summer Meet, and one swimmer qualifying for the Scottish National Open Championships. All national events took place during July and August in
In the Swim England National Summer Meet, Oliver W reached the final in the men’s 17 years category for 50m freestyle, finishing 9th overall; and Paddy N reached the final for 200m freestyle in the men’s. 13/14 years category, finishing 9th overall. Commenting on the swimmers’ success in 2022, Head Coach, David Wright said, “2022 was a fantastic year for
our club. Our swimmers work extremely hard in training and that has shown in their phenomenal gala results. To have 4 of our swimmers competing at national events was also absolutely fantastic, particularly as we are a small volunteerrun club with limited resources. Still, it just goes to show what is possible from hard work and the support of our dedicated team of coaches. We are certainly looking forward to the new year ahead.” To find out more about Stocksbridge Pentaqua Swimming Club including information on how to join, visit https:// www.stocksbridgepentaqua.co.uk/.
Stocksbridge unable to secure New Year Win Globe Holidays sponsored Stocksbridge travelled to York RI in the opening game of the New Year with ambitions to restart a winning streak. Although when leaving Stocksbridge the rain was lashing down, at York the sun was shining and it was a pleasant day for rugby. The team sheet looked strong regardless of not taking a full squad due to other commitments, illness and late dropouts, however, it allowed for experienced Ben Westby to return in a starting shirt on the wing. Kickoff saw Stocksbridge receive the ball and the game was pretty even until York put the first points on the board by playing out wide and then kicking through with their speedy winger scoring just a foot inside the dead ball line. Conversion missed. 5-0 From the restart Stocksbridge returned with pressure offloading through hands and pulling in the defence. Regular debutant Jonathan Gill landed just short of the line but vice-captain Sam Whittaker (sponsored by S&M Pipework) picked it up
and dropped over the line to bring Stocksbridge back into the game. Conversion missed. 5-5 York’s approach was to overload with forward phases but Stocksbridge turned the ball over allowing for a kick into the 22 for a line-out. Stocksbridge lost possession with a mistake offloading off the top which allowed York to take advantage before yet another mistake giving York a scrum. York then kept possession for a little while but didn’t really do anything to aid the score line. A scrum awarded to Stockbridge in their 22 gave play to Paul Kelly at 10 who kicked over the defenders allowing for Jack Pearson to collect from the bounce and break the line passing to support player Ben Tyres and then out to Logan Hannah who took a tackle ten meters out. The ball was recycled and spread out wide to Westby but he was tackled into touch by a pressured York defence. From the lineout, Stocksbridge made a steel and formed a maul but was turned over taking
Nothing spectacular happened for the remainder of the game other than the same theme from the first half with continuous stoppages in play for York injuries meaning any opportunity to build phases was kiboshed. A penalty was given in front of the sticks to York for a high tackle, the kick was successfully converted. 22-12 Stocksbridge dug deep for the remaining 3 minutes keeping the defence standards high but was unable to utilise any opportunity in attack to put more points on the scoreboard.
them into halftime even on points. Stocksbridge started the second half with fire in their bellies seeing Newton turning the ball over from the first tackle and then admirable offload support play from Rooney, Aspin, Bowman and Gill. From a Stocksbridge line-out in Yorks's half, York turned the ball over and managed to break the line down the wing to score under the
sticks. Conversion was successful. 12-5 to the home side. From the restart York continued to dominate for a short period, a pick-andgo from a scrum at halfway and another replication of spreading the ball wide allowed their 15 to sprint through Stocksbridges defence. Conversion was successful. 19-5 Youngsters Crosby and Martin Jnr continued to build on game
time bringing fresh legs to the field. The speed of Yorks's back three seemed to be their advantage, however, Stocksbridge refused to sit back and found some inspiration from a line out setting up a textbook maul followed by carries from forwards Martin Snr and Woodcock before sending the ball out to Ben Tyres (sponsored by The White Hart) who scored under the sticks. Conversion converted by Paul Kelly. 19-12.
Man of The Match was awarded to Ben Tyres by the opposition team for a solid performance. Stocksbridge now sit 7th in Yorkshire 4 having dropped a position from the last runout. The pigs return to Bolsterstone Saturday 14th January to face Airborough 2.15pm Kick Off.

Steels leave it late Brighouse 2-3 Stocksbridge PS
Match report by Adam Allcroft Stocksbridge Park Steels once again scored in the 90th minute against Brighouse Town, finally sealing a win against the traditional bogey side. It was Brighouse who started off as the better side and they very quickly took advantage of their better player. An initial corner was cleared by Stocksbridge, but not very far. Javelle Clarke hit a shot that Ben Townsend was able to palm away but Myron Gibbons, who scored a hat trick against Stocksbridge the last time he played against them, was first onto it and score the opener. Stocksbridge were not behind for very long though. The Steels had an attack down the left and Tomas Poole was able to break in from that area. He had options in the middle but instead, he went for it. The strike was too strong and powerful for Brett Souter to save at his near post, putting the Steels back on level terms. The game would continue to be lively with the wings playing a big part for both teams. Ify Ofoegbu was having a fantastic duel with Brighouse’s Player of the Season elect Sam Reed, while Lewis Macaskill was getting the better of Mohammed Ibrahim on the other side. At the other end, Clarke continued to affect the game during his battle with a returning Jordan Lemon
while Jack Wilson on the other side looked to have a similar impact as he did when he played against us for Ossett United in the FA Trophy. However, Bailey Baker was able to keep a handle on him.
danced his way through the box before shooting at the near post, but Townsend showed David de Gea how to save with his feet. However, Brighouse’s goal eventually came. They had missed a few from distance during the game but eventually one came good. A ball was cleared and former Steel Corey Gregory hit a sweet shot that left Townsend with little chance.
It was one of the wingers who’d make a big impact and thankfully, it was Macaskill. He bundled past the defence once again and his terrier-like persistence forced a mistake between Souter and Aiden Walker allowing him to break through on an empty goal. Walker then would wrestle Macaskill down to the ground to stop him from getting that opportunity. The referee instantly pointed to the spot. Ify Ofoegbu stepped up for his second in-game penalty of the season and while Souter guessed the right way, Ofoegbu’s penalty was too powerful to stop as it went into the bottom corner.

Oglesby was close soon after from a similar set piece as his header this time hit the post.

It seemed destined for Jack Boyle after Brighouse got a free kick on the edge of the area but after he sent that over, the referee blew for the final whistle and the Steels won their first game at the Yorkshire Payments Stadium for a generation.
