Hollin Busk removed from Local plan housing allocation After many years of work, the draft Local Plan has been approved by Councillors for public consultation. The Local Plan brings together proposals around housing, environment, development, economic growth and transport, looking at these as one big picture. It includes plans that will enable 35,700 homes to be built and 43,000 new jobs to be created. At the heart of the plan is a commitment to affordability and sustainability, with the right supporting infrastructure. In line with Labours commitment to make Sheffield carbon net-zero by 2030, the draft plan contains a commitment that from 2025 new homes built must produce 80% lower emissions than current standards and be net-zero carbon by 2030. Consultation on the plan will take place throughout January and February 2023.

Labour councillors also voted through an amendment to remove Hollin Busk from the allocated sites in the Plan. Councillor Grocutt, who fought for Hollin Busk for many years prior to becoming a councillor,
said: “The Prime Minister’s recent U-Turn on housing proves councillors were right to fight the Governments arbitrary housing targets. We challenged them on this and as a result the Plan proposes a lower number of homes than the Tories’ would have forced the Council to deliver” “Labour councillors also successfully fought to ensure that no new homes are built on the Green Belt as part of the plan. “Although we voted through the removal of Hollin Busk we cannot be complacent, as this site will still go through the planning process. The will of local communities is under attack from this Tory Government. Their upcoming Levelling Up and Regeneration Bill contains centrally-set national planning policies which can trump local plans” “This won’t be a surprise to the residents of Stocksbridge who fought to successfully have a development at Hollin Busk rejected, only for the Government Inspector to overturn the decision against the will of local people” “We will remain vigilant and will fight alongside residents to uphold and respect the views of local people”

British Champion Swimming pools to close for months Continued front page
from
A 16-year-old, from Silkstone Common, was crowned national junior women’s cyclo cross champion at the weekend after completing a tough muddy course 2 minutes clear of her nearest rival.
One of Sheffield’s biggest swimming pools is to close for five months, writes David Walsh for the Sheffield Star. The pools at Hillsborough Leisure Centre will close on February 20 for maintenance including the refurbishment and replacement of equipment required ‘to continue to operate effectively’. Thousands of swimmers will be faced with a trip to other sites such as Ponds Forge or Stocksbridge. But Hillsborough’s sports hall, gym and fitness studios will be unaffected, according to Sheffield City Trust, which runs the centre. In a statement the trust said: “As part of Sheffield City Council’s leisure strategy, essential maintenance work means the pools at Hillsborough Leisure Centre will close from February 20 2023 for approximately five months. The refurbishment and replacement of essential pool equip-
ment is required for the facilities to continue to operate effectively. The planned refurbishment work does not affect other areas of the venue. The sports hall, gym and fitness studios will continue to offer a full programme of activity. “We apologise to all our customers for the unavoidable inconvenience. We are communicating with all partners and customers to reallocate space in other venues as appropriate.” Sheffield City Trust runs 13 venues including Sheffield Arena, the City Hall, Ponds Forge and the English Institute of Sport, as well as five golf clubs. It also provides services in the community. A new operator is set to take over from next year. Sheffield Council is in the process of putting the facilities out to tender with a £100 million investment over the next 30 years.
Imogen Wolff 16 year old, a Greenhead College student old was met with a warm embrace from her father Jonathan at the finish line. The race took place in Westmorland in the Lake District, with Imogen representing Shibden Cycling Club. Imogen will now hope to be selected for the world championships which take place in Holland over the weekend of 4th and 5th February.

Residents have their say on plans for new bus service A survey has been launched this week to help find out what Stocksbridge residents want to see from a proposed new “hopper style” community bus service for the town. The Stocksbridge Towns Fund Board is looking to work with local transport providers to deliver a local bus service which can help to better connect different parts of the town. And residents are being given the opportunity to help decide the routes and plans for a new service by taking part in an online survey which can be accessed here Stocksbridge - new local bus service. The proposed service is one of the ten projects which make up the £24.1m investment which has been approved by the Department for Levelling Up Housing and Communities. The aspiration is to create a regular, reliable, and sustainable service which links with the current public transport services in the town it’s hoped that the new service will launch later this year.
To take part in the survey only takes a few minutes and it can be accessed online, paper copies are also available at Stocksbridge Library.

Steelsbridge Angels A local author, inspired by the success of local footballing talent Jamie Vardy, has published a book about the trials and tribulations of a fictional footballer in a local hero story.
A spokeswoman for the Stocksbridge Towns Fund said: “We know from our consultation roadshows and the ongoing engagement through local meetings and drop-ins, that a new local bus service connecting different parts of Stocksbridge is something residents are keen to see.
Craig Minto, the author, told Look Local “ This is a work of fiction based on the town of Stocksbridge and is set between 1940 and 1983. The main character is a Goal Keeper playing for the town's football club and his relationships outside of football.” He continued “I got the idea from when Jamie Vardy played at Stocksbridge Park Steels many years ago and because I was born and bred in Stocksbridge and love football I have written this book. It is a work of fiction and is all about a young lad who wants to be a GoalKeeper and all about his life his friends family and community.
“As we progress our plans we want to hear from as many people as possible about what they would like from a local service and to have their say on how it could operate. The routes we can provide will depend on viability, but to assist the Board and the service provider to shape these proposals we really want to hear the views of local people.”
Craig plans on doing a reading and telling people about the book in the near future.

Sheffield Cathedral Christmas Tree Festival raises more than £1,600 for local good causes The decorations have been taken down and the trees have gone but the legacy of Sheffield Cathedral’s Christmas Tree Festival will last well into 2023. That’s because the festival has raised more than £1,600 through donations made by visitors to the event.
The Cathedral encourages everyone visiting the festival to vote for their favourite tree. A staggering 5,039 votes were received with trees decorated by The Sheffield Children’s Hospital and Henderson’s Relish being voted the peoples’ favourite. “We are so grateful to have been voted this year’s favourite Charity at the Cathedral’s Christmas Tree Festival. We have taken part for the last three years, and love seeing our tree up in lights. The festival is a lovely part of Christmas and winning this year is just the best way to round off the festive period!” said Jane Darby, Charity Fundraising Hub Officer. The tree decorated by first time participant Henderson’s was voted favourite tree in the corporate category. Matt Davies, General Manager at Henderson’s said “I’m delighted that the Henderson’s Relish tree was voted favourite corporate tree at the festival and very pleased to forward the £250 award to S6 Foodbank, Sheffield.” Accepting the award, Chris Hardy manager of Sheffield S6 Foodbanks said “We’re thrilled that Henderson’s have chosen us as the charity to receive the donation. This will go towards supporting people across our 11 sites in Sheffield whether it be food or ongoing support in areas such as debt advice, housing and utility bills. “Every year the festival becomes more popular.” said Ben Rossi, Development Manager at
the Cathedral. “As well as several local Sheffield businesses supporting the event, trees were decorated by school children, scouts, guides and cadets. There were also hospital, hospice and cancer charities involved and homelessness and environmental organisations. Many of this year’s participants have already registered for the 2023 festival because they enjoy taking part so much.” “It is a special time for the Cathedral and this Christmas our events and services were extremely well supported” said Ben. “Nearly 1,000 people filled the Cathedral for our annual Christmas Eve Carol Service while more than 8,500 people were captivated by our lightshow. Throughout the whole festive season anyone visiting the Cathedral were also able to enjoy 40 beautiful Christmas trees and any donations placed in the boxes under each tree have been passed onto the organisation responsible for decorating it.” The Cathedral’s Christmas Tree Festival was supported by Utilita Energy Hub, etiCloud and Heavenly Coffee Company. Space in the Cathedral is limited so any business, charity or community group interested in participating in the 2023 festival should email arts@ sheffield-cathedral.org.uk as soon as possible to register their interest. Sheffield Cathedral is open 8:30am to 5:30pm, Monday to Friday, 9.00am to 4.00pm on Saturday and 8:00am to 5.00pm on a Sunday.

Inspirational swimmer brings back medals Local swimming instructor starred for Team GB in the recent World ice swimming championship, bringing back two medals. 12-16 January 2023 saw the 5th IISA world ice swimming competitions in Samoens in France. Team GB had 47 athletes and there were 42 countries being represented with a total of nearly 500 athletes altogether. Yorkshire had 6 swimmers representing the team and Wendy Figures was one of those Yorkshire/GB swimmers. Wendy, who lives in Hillsborough and works at Stocksbridge Community Leisure Centre, has been ice swimming for 8 years and this was her 2nd world championships. She was super pleased to have won 2 medals this year in her age category – silver in the 100m Breast stroke and Bronze in the 50 m Breaststroke. She says ‘this is the first time I have raced the short distances in the ice and I was hoping for slightly faster times but the cold water robs you of your energy very quickly and even more so when sprinting so the last few metres of every race was very hard work’. She travelled with swim buddies Robyn Dyson from North Anston who took Bronze medal in the 500 FC for her age group and Millie Bell from Harrogate
LOCAL HERITAGE LIST Can you help with identifying our much loved places? Many of our interesting or unique old buildings and sites are protected from inappropriate changes or damage by being designated by Historic England as scheduled monuments (of national importance) or listed buildings. So there are 43 scheduled archaeological sites in Sheffield, which includes in this area for example the Bolsterstone Glasshouse, Bailey Hill motte and bailey castle in High Bradfield and Bar Dyke linear earthwork on the Mortimer Road. There are also around 1,200 listed buildings in Sheffield and these require listed building consent to make any changes, even quite minor ones. But there are many heritage assets which have no such protection and yet may be really important to the local community. Aside from buildings, these could be industrial remains, churches, statues, war memorials, archaeological sites, milestones – the list is endless. South Yorkshire Archaeology Service successfully bid for government funds to set up the South Yorkshire Local Heritage List, which launched in September 2021. The aim of the List is to enable everyone to submit details of buildings and sites that are important to their community, and which contribute to the distinctiveness and history of South Yorkshire, by taking photos, doing some research and uploading them to the website. These are then open for comment by the public and assessed by a panel, before Council approval. The significance of an asset included in the
who won 3 bronze medals in her age category. Wendy is now training for the GB Ice championships which will be held in Cheltenham in February. She told Look Local ‘I learned a lot at the world champs and I have a training plan in place in the hope that I can swim faster at the GB Champs’. Ice swimming has been around for many years- mainly in Scandinavia but in 2009 the International Ice Swimming Federation was formed and has grown exponentially. The rules for ice swimming is that the water should be 5 degrees or lower & no neoprene. (1 swim suit, cap and goggles). Samoens is a beautiful town near the Alps and their tourist board build a fabulous swimming pool in the lake. 10 lanes & 25m long so that all the regular pool events could be swam but in the ice! It’s very challenging and competitors need to train both in the pool for speed but also in the cold water to ensure that they are acclimatised and safe. They can’t even take part until they have had a series of medicals to prove that they are fit enough to do so. Not to mention having proven swimming experience in the ice.

List will be taken into account in planning decisions. All four Local Authorities in South Yorkshire are working through approval of the List and how to administer it going forward. To quote from the website: ‘Each council’s cabinet/executive committee has to consider the proposal to adopt the South Yorkshire Local Heritage List and then approve the delegation of formal decision-making to the Head of Planning for each local authority.’ So far the Bolsterstone Archaeology and Heritage Group has submitted to the Local Heritage List the Fox office building and two mills at Liberty Steel which date back to the 1850s-60s (and surprisingly are not listed), St Matthias church from 1890, the Clock Tower built in 1923, the bolsterstones in St Mary’s churchyard, Whitley Romano-British settlement site on Wharncliffe Chase and Walder’s Low. The Friendship Inn is also on the approved List. If you know of other places that are important to the community, please submit them yourself at Home - South Yorkshire Local Heritage List (local-heritage-list.org.uk) or contact bahgevent@axelafa.com with the details. There are maps on the website which allow you to see if something is listed already, so it’s wise to check that first. The more we put forward, the more everyone appreciates the amazing heritage we have in this area.

Classical Sheffield announce full programme and launch tickets for the 10th Anniversary Classical Weekend
Classical Sheffield is thrilled to launch tickets and announce the full programme of Classical Weekend 2023, celebrating its 10th anniversary, from Friday 17th - Sunday 19th March. The last Classical Weekend took place in 2019, reaching over 10,000 people, but the pandemic meant the biennial Festival was postponed in 2021. The 2023 Weekend brings a varied selection of music-making across the city in an exciting programme of events that involves hundreds of music-makers.
The Weekend opens on Friday 17 March with concerts from Music in the Round, The Hallé and The University of Sheffield. However, it's on Saturday that things really get going. Free pop up performances take place in the Winter Garden, with free Samba and Brass Band workshops led by Sheffield Music Hub and Concord All Stars in Orchard Square. A variety of singing and instrumental groups will be performing concerts featuring classical and popular classics throughout the day in Upper Chapel and St Matthew’s Church Carver Street. Four Sheffield Community Choirs sing together for the very first time at Victoria Hall, performing Rutter's ‘The Spring of Thyme’, and Sheffield Bach Choir
close the day with their concert at St Mark’s Church Broomhill. Perhaps one of the highlights of the weekend is the concert dedicated to the music of local folk superstar Kate Rusby on Sunday. ‘Being Human’ a selection of 10 of Kate Rusby's songs in an arrangement by Kate Shipway specially commissioned for the Festival, is given its premiere at Firth Hall, involving over 100 singers from local community choirs. The grand finale for the Weekend is a performance at Sheffield City Hall of Mahler's Symphony No.2, Resurrection. The evening begins with an awards ceremony for the finalists of the Stella Jockel Young Composer Competition for composers aged 18-35 linked to the city, followed by the world première of the winning piece performed by Hallam Choral Society and the Sheffield Philharmonic Chorus. The choirs will then be joined on stage by Hallam Sinfonia and the Sheffield Philharmonic Orchestra for a spectacular performance of Mahler's Second Symphony featuring local award-winning singers Anna Harvey and Ella Taylor. Tickets to all events can be purchased via the Classical Sheffield website, alongside all information about the concerts and venues: https://classicalsheffield.org.uk/ events/2023/classical-sheffieldweekend-2023

How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These QHHG WR EH ¿OOHG LQ ZLWK QXPEHUV WKDW complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. YourLetters The Cost of Delays to Sheffield’s Local Plan It was very disappointing to see outline planning permission being granted last week for up to 75 dwellings at the Broomfield Lane end of Hollin Busk in Deepcar – although the plans for up to 92 dwellings on the same site were rejected, which would have resulted in even more green destruction and an additional access point. I joined many others in objecting to the plans, both during public consultation and by speaking at the Planning Committee. Despite my amendment to Sheffield’s Draft Local Plan which removed this part of Hollin Busk from the list of allocated sites for housing development, the Planning Committee said that they could only attach limited weight to the Draft Plan because it was still at a relatively early stage.
The Government has a huge opportunity to change course in talks with the profession It has taken the Secretary of State for Health, Steve Barclay, far too long to realise that the NHS workforce is an essential part of the solution to the crisis engulfing our health service. If he had been willing to meet with us and other representatives of that workforce sooner in his tenure then perhaps we would not be where we are today. Now that the penny has finally dropped, we are invited into his presence.
In last week's issue we saw Miriam Cates MP showing concern for a rotting dragon's head. The 'actual' dragon of Wantley was slain to save the lives of locals. Tory austerity is a modern day monster costing lives, which conservative MPs who finally see enough is enough can end by resigning. This would give us the chance to vote in a government now that will begin to mend this country. Yours Peter Morton Hunshelf Park
Reply to Stagecoach re hopeless 57 bus service Dear Stagecoach Customer Services (cc Miriam Cates MP, Looklocal newspaper) False. There is no "Additional information needed": you need to deal with my multiple complaints, and honestly. You are lying about staff shortages. The problem is that you systematically cancel our services out to Stocksbridge so as to ensure all buses run on your higher fare-taking routes cross-city. We know this from conversations with your bus drivers. You discriminate against our community by unfairly placing on us the burden of staff shortage, saving Sheffield within-city routes from this; despite the impact being far more severe on Stocksbridge/ Deepcar as we have no other service. Furthermore, you have misappropriated the COVID subsidy you have been given until April to compensate for lower passenger numbers in not using this to maintain our services, instead cutting them. Why is Stagecoach not in court for mis-use of public funds and fraud? Steve Moxon

Housing Plan I must take Mr. J Hinchey to task about his comments using the above title in this weeks LL. It is Lewis Chinchen, not David. The Upper Don Valley has three Sheffield Councillors out of eighty four. Stocksbridge Council has no worthwhile say on planning applications. Lewis, Julie Grocutt and our MP have objected to all planning applications in the area other than perhaps the Lowood works site. They are well aware of the traffic problems, particularly the bottom of Carr Road. They are fighting tooth and nail to get a worthwhile bus service reintroduced and a railway service introduced. As far as I am aware the only applications that have been approved are the Silver Fox site (£50000 per house before a brick is put down) and the Carr Road end of Holin Busk Road. Again local councillors objected but it was passed with very restringent conditions, like a survey on possible subsidence to the old mine in the area. Please get off Lewis Chichens back.
It is no coincidence that amid the breakdown and collapse of healthcare across England, doctors are balloting and nurses and paramedics are striking. It is those who work in our NHS who have always been its greatest champions and defenders, and as the pressure on healthcare professionals becomes unbearable, they will act. Those who ask how can you consider striking when the service is in crisis must understand the reality. We ballot because the service is collapsing. This has become our last and The Dragon of Wantley is based on an ancient story about a green dragon on \/Wharncliffe Crags. only option when all else has failed. There is a so called dragons cave at the base of the We understand that today’s carefully choreographed crags. Neither junior doctors David Lawson nor consultants will even submit evidence this year - knowing the process is rigged from the start.
This reasoning shows how costly Sheffield Council’s delays to the Local Plan have been. Had we had an up-to-date Local Plan finalised by now – with Hollin Busk removed as an allocated site for housing development – green spaces like this could have been protected. The Sheffield Local Plan has been in development since 2012 and deadlines have been For the last two years the doctors’ pay review body repeatedly missed by the Council. has been imploring the government to raise its offer The power of a Local Plan is that we can decide where for juniors from 2%. Without a the government more is needed to recognise the Local Plan, it is much easier for developers to build contribution of junior doctors during the pandemic. on sites that do not have community consent. Each time this government has ignored the body it now claims to respect. Cllr Lewis Chinchen Conservative Councillor for In reality this flawed pay review process has lost the Stocksbridge and Upper Don Ward confidence of doctors and no longer acts with the consent of the profession. How else could such a process have produced a 26.1% pay cut for juniors Wantley Dragon and an even greater cut for consultants since 2008?

I am writing regarding the letter from Mr Adam Hurst which was published in Look Local (Issue 1251) dated 5 th January 2023. Although the contents of the letter are factual, there is an inference that the Labour Councillors at Sheffield City Council (SCC) and the Penistone and Stocksbridge Branch of the Labour Party, the heading on his letter, are responsible for the result of 20 th December 2022 Communities, Parks and Leisure Policy Committee Meeting. Not so and the residents and voters of West Ecclesfield and Penistone and Stocksbridge Constituency should be made aware of this misleading information. Jim ‘i may be gone a while’ Morton, made an impromptu visit to the Look Local office last week. The 64 year old, from Penistone has just finished a mammoth 18 month walk around the mainline coast of Great Britain to visit every lighthouse along the way, and to raise funds for The Gurkha Welfare Trust. The avid Sheffield Wednesday fan, and former Hillsborough resident explained one of the highlights of his trip was bumping into former Sheffield Wednesday player Ian Mellor and his wife. He shared a coffee and a chat in a Manchester cafe before continuing on his 8903 mile trek. ‘Jim’ was joined on his adventure by his wife Sue and their two Westie dogs, Shauna and Maisey. Whilst Jim walked, his support team would follow in a campervan. Jim said ‘i’d like to thank everyone who supported and helped me along the way, i walked 8903 miles in 537 days and lost 2 stone, it was made all the easier by meeting so many nice and generous people.” After raising £38,000 of his £50,000 target, Jim is planning to bring out a book on his exploits in the coming year.

Economic Recovery Fund: Council claim success for high street investment fund
An independent evaluation of the Council’s Economic Recovery Fund has shown high streets more than ‘doubled the money invested’, for every £1 spent. The report, undertaken by local research consultancy Kada, found that projects had wide reaching benefits and outcomes, including: Visibly improved district centres Communities across Sheffield supported and new partnerships built Empowered community and business groups Successful budget control achieved Overwhelmingly supported by stakeholders, the Economic Recovery Fund (ERF) represented a new way of working for the council, putting decision-making power and leadership into the hands of local communities. Instead of providing funding for pre-defined outputs, the council invited partnerships and organisations to put forward their own proposals for what their neighbourhood needed. The report has highlighted the enthusiasm and passion with which local project leads have responded. The Fund has confirmed the appetite among Sheffield’s businesses to play an active role in their communities. So far, the report counted a range of outputs that have already been delivered or are in progress: 8 new business forums 3 shop front improvement schemes, transforming dozens of shop fronts 7 street art projects, including shutters, utility boxes and murals 12 Christmas light/shop front displays and associated events, across two seasons Barnsley Sixth Form College student, Caleb Beardsall, has been named as Barnsley FC’s first official Esports player and will represent the Reds within the FIFA ePremier League. Caleb, 18, who has been playing FIFA for over 10 years, was the winner of the College’s Esports FIFA tournament after winning eight matches including one against the Reds’ Chief Executive Officer, Khaled El-Ahmad. The ePremier League tournament, played using the annual FIFA game, has been held each year since 2019 and is open to UK players aged 16 and over, plus any Clubsigned professional gamers. The finals, which reached more than 22 million fans over the last two seasons, will be broadcast on Sky Sports, Premier League channels and the EA SPORTS FIFA Twitch channel. Caleb, a current English Literature, Film Studies and Media Studies student said: “As a massive Barnsley FC fan I’m really excited to represent the Club. It was great to meet Khaled and win him 2-1 in our game. I was really nervous during the tournament, but now I’m buzzing to get started. The College’s and Barnsley Griffins’ facilities are amazing, I definitely felt like I was part of an Esports tournament.”
Enzo Guarini, Esports Course Leader at Barnsley College, added: “Caleb has worked really hard during the tournament. He’s a young man who absolutely loves football and has done well in the classroom. Caleb has a real opportunity to progress within Esports and we wish him all the very best. “Furthermore, this collaboration and partnership highlights our excellent Esport provision and facilities. Both the College and Barnsley FC are excited at the prospect of this partnership and intend to collaborate on future projects not only to promote Esports, but health and wellbeing.” For more information about our Esports courses visit www.barnsley.ac.uk/sport or email info@barnsley.ac.uk. Credit should go to the players of both sides and the officials for providing the fans with an entertaining game of football in wet and wintery conditions at The Parker Roofing Memorial Ground last Saturday Report by Church player Ryan Hallsworth (pictured)
In the first half I think we were probably the better team, we created the most chances. I had a good chance after the keeper had spilled it but I put it over, Rowan Briscoe had a good opportunity to score when we worked some nice football down the line Brad Kemp put a really good ball across but Rowan just hit the keeper. A half time Briggsy (Manager Scotty Briggs) said, just keep doing what you are doing and the next chance try and take it. When it came I ran through on goal, messed about with it too much and put it wide. Two minutes later they got a goal from a bit of a scrap in the box and we were thinking that we’ve

I’d just like to mention some individual performances today, firstly Rowan Briscoe has been first class today and if he continues his form he’ll be a regular for the first team in the future.
We play Oughtibridge next week, they’ll be another tough test because they always are. We just need to keep sticking at it, keep fit and we’ll be there or there about at the end of the season. Fixtures Saturday 21st January 2023 Toolstation NCEL Premier Division Penistone Church v Yorkshire Amateur Kick-off 3pm
Ben Matthews was also outstanding today, putting last-ditch challenges in and he was our man of the match by far.
Auckley started the brighter and went 1-0 up in the first minute when Matthew Bruck upended his man, as Auckley scored the penalty which James Birch almost saved.

With ten or fifteen minutes left we took a corner, a poor one to be fair but it’s come straight out to me, I managed to get past a couple of defenders, took a shot and scored in the bottom corner. I scored my hardest chance today but sometimes that’s how it is.
All in all we are a little bit disappointed because we had chances to win the game but pleased because we got back into the game after being one-nil down.

Then for ten or fifteen minutes after that we were poor, we didn’t get the ball down, we didn’t test their defence and we let them get on top.
Also, keeper James Birch pulled off a cracking save when they were one-nil up, the striker tried to bend it into the top corner and Birchy was at full stretch to tip it wide.

Auckley doubled their lead shortly after from the edge of the area with a well taken goal. After 20 minutes Niall Smith beat his man and was then hacked down with a knee high challenge, leaving the referee no option but to dismiss the Auck-
ley defender. From the resulting free kick Mitch Savage crosses and Jay Carter made it 2-1. 5 minutes later Savage again was the creator with a pinpoint crosses, met by the head of stand in skipper Jed Phillips to make things level. Carter then added his second after good hold up play by Morgan Cowell led to Carter curling in to the far corner to send Legion in to the break 3-2 ahead. Man of the match Carter then turned provider when Phillips set him away out wide, and he found
Cowell who finished in composed fashion. Auckley then scored with a tidy finish at the far post for 4-3, before Carter completed his hat trick after Savage beat two men and chipped to the back post for him to head home. The final goal came with Carter hitting his 4th of the day, reacting quickest and finishing in to the bottom corner.

Rugby grind out a gritty win ‘It wasn’t pretty, but we got the job done’ were the thoughts of vicecaptain ‘slammin’ Sam Whittaker after Stocksbridge Rugby ground out a hard-fought victory over 4th placed Aireborough RUFC at the weekend.
Play continued in a similar vein until the half-time whistle with the scoreline: Stocksbridge Rugby 3pts – Aireborough nil.
Playing with the slope and downwind in the 2nd half, Stocksbridge hoped to pile on the pressure in their search for tries, somehow the visitors kept them out as the 2nd half shaped up similar to the previous one.
A third home win on the spin and a thrilling 1pt victory to cement 7th place in the Counties 4 Yorkshire league ladder. On a cold, windy and wet afternoon at ‘fortress’ Coal Pit Lane, flowing rugby was always going to be at a premium, and the game was littered with errors from both sides from the first whistle until the last. Despite the weather, the pitch was firm and relatively dry thanks to the excellent work of Charlesworth Landscapes, who also kindly provided the match balls. The visitors had requested un-contestable scrums due to their availability issues, so Head Coach Andy Lawrence selected accordingly, moving Gill and Hawksworth into the front row berths to add extra firepower around the field.
The versatile Liam O’Leary was selected at No 8, and the mercurial Paul Kelly partnered that man Frith at half-back, with Christopherson Jnr at full-back and the veteran Christopherson SNR on the finishers bench, along with rampaging bull Joe Smith back available after serving a suspension. Playing up the slope in the first half, Stocksbridge had the better of territory and possession without troubling the scoreboard, all too often promising attacks were brought to an end by stern defence or un-
Holder crowned Aussie Champ
SHEFFIELD'S Jack Holder has been crowned the new Australian Champion. The Tru Plant Tigers' No.1 has enjoyed a solid four round series and got the job done by claiming victory in North Brisbane on Wednesday. 2017 World Champion and Ipswich star Jason Doyle had won all three of the opening events putting him in pole position to regain the title. But an impressive run saw Holder just three points behind him in the overall standings and a tense finale was highly anticipated. Unsurprisingly, both made it through to the Semi-Finals and when Doyle was eliminated in the first, Holder knew the task in hand. He won his Semi to qualify before pulling off an early pass to get by Max Fricke in the Final
to earn his first senior national title. Said Holder: “It feels amazing. "I’ve worked so hard for this and spent a lot of money on bringing my good stuff back from Europe. “I’m pretty speechless at the moment but wow, number one!” FINAL AUSTRALIAN CHAMPIONSHIP STANDINGS: 1st Jack Holder 63, 2nd Jason Doyle 61, 3rd Max Fricke 53, 4th Rohan Tungate 51, 5th Brady Kurtz 45, 6th Josh Pickering 39, 7th Justin Sedgmen 38, 8th Chris Holder 37, 9th Zach Cook 28, 10th Zane Keleher 22, 11th James Pearson 16, 12th Zaine Kennedy 14, 13th Ryan Douglas 12, =14th Sam Masters 8, =14th Ben Cook 8, 15th Patrick Hamilton 7, 16th Jye Etheridge 5, 17th Cooper Riordan 4, 18th Fraser Bowes 3, =19th Brayden McGuinness 2, =19th Michael West 2.
forced errors, ‘clock tower’ Andy Beal made himself a nuisance to the visiting defenders with his constant and physical forward drives. Aireborough were forced to concede a number of penalties due to the relentless nature of the home side’s attacking intent. Surprisingly, Stocksbridge spurned a couple of kickable penalties. Still, skipper Frith decided to ask Scotty Bowskill to open the scoring with a closerange penalty effort for another infringement by the visitors.
Aireborough could not break out of their own red zone, and try as they might, Stocksbridge could not find the killer blow to cross the whitewash. As the home side huffed and puffed, something had to give and eventually the bustling Liam O’Leary dived over from close range after further good work from the forward pack, Bowskill narrowly failing to convert. Any thoughts the home side had of adding to their points tally were dealt a blow as O’Leary turned from hero to villain, receiving a yellow card and ten minutes in the sin bin for a high tackle offence. Aireborough took advantage of their numerical supremacy and launched a wave of attacks on the hard working Stocksbridge defence, and were rewarded
with a well-worked try and conversion to bring the scores within 1pt of each other. Stocksbridge managed to hold out any further attempts from the visitors, and remained in control, just, to hold on for the final whistle and a score of Stocksbridge Rugby 8pts – Aireborough 7pts. ‘A tight finish, a gritty win and a committed, dogged performance saw us home today’, said a jubilant skipper Adam Frith afterwards, adding ‘this is a statement win for us today, taking down 4th place in the table. Now we move on to next week’. The Funding Solutions Man of the Match award went to Liam O’Leary for a barnstorming display, with Beal, Pearson and young Christopherson also showing up well. Head Coach Andy Lawrence must now prepare his troops for a tricky but winnable clash, as they look to complete a league double on Yorkbased Nestle Rowntree next week, before free-scoring Otliensians are the next visitors to Coal Pit Lane on Saturday 28th January, kick-off 2.15pm, and all are welcome.

Steels continue good form Stocksbridge PS 2-0 Carlton Town
Match report by Adam Allcroft Stocksbridge Park Steels managed to put away Carlton Town in a game not destined to live long in the memory. The game started with plenty of energy as Stocksbridge tried to attack, the Steels obviously looking to make up for their penalties loss against Maltby Main during the week. But after this initial burst of excitement, the game quietened down and very little of note actually happened. Neither team were able to press forward with success as both sides’ defences remained very solid at the back. This meant it’d be goalless at the break, a fair score line. In the second half, it was much the same but Carlton edging into the tie with Bradley Wells starting to cause problems for the Stocksbridge defence. But while the Millers were caus-
ing problems, Stocksbridge were able to take the lead. The Steels found some space with the break and after the ball was pinged around the box, it was whipped to Tomas Poole whose volley had enough on it to beat Mike Emery. Getting the opening goal seemed to energise the Stocksbridge team as they looked to press on and seal their victory. They were very close a few minutes later as a Poole free kick was whipped in with pace only for Elliot Murray to come inches from connecting with it. Not long after that, Poole was denied a second after Emery made a smart save only for the rebound to fall to Luke Rawson who could only hit the shot over. Dylan Youmbi also forced Emery to make a save after beating a defender to get into the box. Stocksbridge were able to get another goal which killed the game off. Lewis
Macaskill had beat his man, leaving him on the floor in his wake, before having his shot saved by Emery. Carlton didn’t clear and Rawson latched into it before knocking it back to Kurtis Turner who slotted into into the corner despite a number of Millers defenders being on the line to try and stop it. Carlton to their credit and rallied and were unlucky not to ruin Ben Townsend’s clean sheet when Jarred Holmes smashed the bar from close range, but Stocksbridge will have been happy with an ugly three points. Next home game: Saturday 21 January vs Ossett Utd, 3pm KO Pictured: Thomas Poole is congratulated by teammates after opening the scoring. Photo by Ian Revitt
