Fire engines and an ambulance responded after a report of children playing on a frozen pond in Sheffield. Emergency services were called after a motorist on the M1 spotted youngsters on ice off Smithy Wood Road in Chapeltown on Sunday 22 January. A statement from the South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “It's pretty icy out there. Sadly, our crews have just come away from an incident in Chapeltown, and a group of young people were spotted playing on a frozen body of water. "We've said it before and we'll say it again please stay off the ice! You never know how thick it might be, and if you fall in, you could get into serious difficulty.”

FORMER MP STANDS TRIAL
A former Sheffield MP tried to submit fake invoices for nearly £30,000 in a bid to fund his "extensive cocaine habit", a court has heard. Jared O'Mara, who represented Sheffield Hallam, is on trial at Leeds Crown Court and denies eight counts of fraud. Prosecutors allege part of the fraud involved creating a false organisation called "Confident About Autism South Yorkshire" to try to claim payments. Mr O'Mara, 41, and two other men deny the charges. Opening the case for the prosecution, Mr James Bourne-Arton described it as a "very straightforward case of fraud". "In 2019 the defendants Jared O'Mara and Gareth Arnold submitted a series of invoices for payment that were false - that is to say that the services that the invoices related to were a fiction and the defendants knew that," he said. "They were deliberately making dishonest claims for work that hadn't been done in order to receive the money for themselves." As well as submitting claims for £19,400 relating to the "fictitious" organisation it is also claimed he submitted two invoices totalling £4,650 from his "chief of staff " Mr Arnold for media and PR work that prosecutors say was never carried out. The jury was also told Mr O'Mara, who appeared in court by videolink on Monday, submitted a false contract of employment for his friend John Woodliff, 43, "pretending" that Mr Woodliff worked for him as a constituency support officer in an effort to "generate money for the two of them". The trial, which is due to last 10 days, continues.

MP WELCOMES NEW LAWS TO PROTECT CHILDREN ONLINE Local MP Miriam Cates has welcomed the Government’s decision to introduce criminal liability for tech bosses who fail in their duties to keep children safe online. The Penistone and Stocksbridge MP has led a campaign in Parliament to amend the Online Safety Bill to make sure that senior managers of social media companies can face jail if they deliberately allow children to view harmful online content such as self-harm material and graphic adult content. With the support of 50 Conservative MPs, the NSPCC, and the Children’s Commissioner, Mrs Cates was able to persuade the Government to commit to introducing the new law when it goes through the House of Lords next month. Mrs Cates said ‘I'm delighted that the Government has agreed
to introduce criminal penalties for tech bosses who fail to protect children online. We look back in horror at children being forced to work down mines, or neglected in Victorian orphanages, but I believe we’ll look back with equal outrage at online harm. The only way to get big global tech companies to change their behaviour is to make sure that directors and senior managers are held personally liable for failures to protect children.’ The Online Safety Bill will introduce child safety duties on technologies platforms operating in the UK and is expected to become law later this year. The Bill already imposes financial penalties on tech firms that breach these duties, but campaigners say the addition of senior manager liability will give the Bill the ‘teeth’ it needs to force real change.

Tree planting in new Orchard
Last Saturday, fuelled by bacon butties from the Blue Ball, a couple of dozen Worrallers were planting a small orchard in Sycamore Park. Making sure they were giving the plum, damson and cherry trees the best possible start were Community Foresters Rob and Ella from the Sheffield Parks Department. Worrall Environmental Group provided the workforce. One of the youngest planters said “When I get to Bradfield School I’ll walk past my tree on the way home and can tell friends that it is mine.” Worrall Environmental Group (WEG) worked with the Parks staff to help organise this event. The event was on Saturday 21st January. WEG is concerned with aspects of the village environment and works to ensure that the village remains unspoiled. In recent years it has provided and installed 17 flower tubs around the village, provided five village entrance signs, maintained and restored the village troughs, erected a memorial stone, organised cleanup days, liaised with agencies to plant almost 2,000 trees. WEG hold meetings several times a year and new members of the community are always welcome. Meetings are held alternately in the Shoulder of Mutton and the Blue Ball and membership is free.

Community facility suffers suspected arson attack A suspected arson attack has caused "devastating" damage to a Sheffield Wednesday community football facility.
Firefighters were called to the Jubilee Sports and Social Club, in Hillsborough, after a car was driven on to the pitch and set alight on Sunday. The facility, which cost just under a £1m, was opened earlier this year. Marcus Brameld, from the Sheffield Wednesday Community Programme, said he was "at a loss" as to why anyone would target the facility Speaking to BBC Radio Sheffield, he said the attack had happened shortly after 17.30 GMT. "They had cut through the emergency gates with bolt cutters and driven a car on and set it alight and ran off, causing quite a lot of damage to half of the pitch," he said. The improvements to the site, paid for by the foundation through grants, include
turning the grass pitch into a full size 3G pitch with floodlights. Mr Brameld said this enabled more teams to use the pitch.
"We had a 24-team school tournament on Friday with over 200 young players," he said. "There's a new gym, dressing rooms, it is a bit of a community hub." Mr Brameld said the damage to the pitch would mean shutting, but he hoped they would reopen as soon as possible. "People have rallied round," he said. "The company that laid the pitch are sending their MD today to have a look at it for us. "We will get it back up and running and we won't let these people defeat us." South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue tweeted an appeal for anyone with any information
about the incident to report it.
A spokesperson for the service said: "Upon arrival [firefighters] found a car had been driven onto an astro turf sports pitch and set alight. "This was dealt with by 18.12 GMT and is thought to have been started deliberately." South Yorkshire Police said the car was a black Toyota Yaris which had previously been reported as stolen. Officers have appealed for anyone with any information about the incident to get in touch. Know who did it? Tell us, anonymously: 0800 169 5558 or visit www. firestoppersreport.co.uk

Henry Moore Touring Exhibition arrives at The Cooper Gallery A touring exhibition from The Sainsbury Centre collection of work by acclaimed sculptor Henry Moore is to visit Barnsley’s Cooper Gallery from January 28. Henry Moore, who was born and bred in West Yorkshire, was a semi-abstract sculpture artist known for pioneering a new vision for modern sculpture. He is best known for his monumental bronze sculptures which are located around the world, including at Yorkshire Sculpture Park, but his work also includes carvings, drawings, prints and designed textiles and tapestries too. The exhibition, Henry Moore: Threads of Influence, spans the length of his esteemed career from early drawings and carvings to iconic drawings and late prints and demonstrates the multiple facets of Moore’s practice. It explores his influences over the years from artists such as Henri Gaudier-Brzeska and Jacob Epstein to ancient sculpture from Mexico and beyond. With over 31 pieces on display and on loan in this touring exhibition from the Sainsbury Centre, one of the most prominent university art galleries in Britain, the exhibition includes life drawings of the human form that laid the foundations of Moore’s sculptural practice. The exhibition will also feature drawings from Moore’s time as an Official War Artist inspired by the scenes in the London Underground during the Blitz. Jon Finch, Head of Culture and Visitor Economy at Barnsley Museums, said:
“Moore’s work is iconic and we are very privileged to have an artist of his calibre on display in The Cooper Gallery. The exhibition sits perfectly alongside more of his pieces in the gallery’s permanent collection, which will be on display at the same time, providing a greater understanding of his work. “He has strong links to Yorkshire, and people can discover more of his work at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Hepworth Gallery in Wakefield and in the Henry Moore Institute in Leeds.” Councillor Robert Frost, Cabinet Spokesperson for Regeneration and Culture, said: “Having the works of Henry Moore on display here in Barnsley will spark plenty of conversations among those visiting Barnsley town centre over the next few months. “A lot has changed in Barnsley over the past year and there’s never been a better time to visit. As well as a rich cultural offer, both in the town centre and in our museums and galleries, we’ve now got a great mix of activities across the whole town centre with popular leisure venues like Superbowl UK and Cineworld UK, cultural venues like Experience Barnsley and the Cooper Gallery, and many new shops, cafés, bars and restaurants.” You can find out more about the free exhibition, which will run from January 28 to June 3, 2023, here: www.cooper-gallery. com
Levelling up let down Commenting on the news that South Yorkshire’s bid for money to fix its public transport system had lost out in the second round of Levelling Up fund money, South Yorkshire’s Mayor Oliver Coppard said: “This is deeply disappointing for South Yorkshire, and just the latest example of how the government’s ‘Levelling Up’ mission isn’t working. While I’m happy for communities who have been successful in getting funding, Yorkshire as a whole got half the money that London and the south-east received and yet, £20m of the money for Yorkshire has gone to the Prime Minister’s own constituency. “This latest let-down is an attack on our local ambition to fix our public transport network; it comes at a time where South Yorkshire has lost 15% of its bus network, whilst places like London and the southeast see theirs grow yet continue to receive levelling up funding. “We asked the government for money to fix our buses. Whilst we got nothing, Broxbourne is getting a new skate park and Canterbury Castle is getting a facelift. “In its 12 ‘Levelling Up Missions’ the government promised us a ‘London-style transport network’ by 2030. That’s just over 360 weeks away and yet, here we are, losing out on ‘Levelling Up’ transport funding for a third time.
“Government need to devolve budgets and powers if we’re truly going to see levelling up happen. We know what works best for South Yorkshire better than anyone and with the right tools and resources we could transform our broken public transport network. Instead, we have to go through the ridiculous process of government pitting regions against each other, all competing for pots of money from Westminster. You can’t level up through competition. “It’s not fair and it’s not working. I’m not surprised the Tories want to stop using the phrase Levelling Up – because they know that since the last election, regional inequality has actually got worse.” Cllr Mazher Iqbal, Sheffield City Council CoChair of the Transport, Regeneration and Climate Policy Committee, said: “We are naturally disappointed to learn Sheffield will not benefit from any further Levelling Up funding from Government this time around. “This news will not dampen our spirits in Sheffield – we are even more determined to secure the best for our city, fighting every day to bring in investment whilst focusing on getting the most out of every penny we spend.”

It's Panto time again in Grenoside, “Sleeping Beauty” opens on Friday 27th January. Grenoside Pantomime group started way back in 1976 and has run every year since then, with the exception of 2021, so this will be the groups 47th panto. It goes on stage at Grenoside Community Centre, Main Street, Sheffield S35 8PR, on 27th, 28th, 29th January and 2nd, 3rd & 4th February 2023. Over recent years, many shows, particularly the matinees, have been a sell-out, so don’t leave it too late to book. Sleeping Beauty is a classic tale that we all know and love. It’s the story of a princess cursed to sleep for a hundred years until she can be awoken by a kiss of true love. This year introduces our new producers Ewan and Callam Fellows, who have been part the group for many years. Ewan and Callam have also co-written the

script. They’ve taken this familiar fairy tale, added in all the fun you would expect to find in a pantomime, along with a few other unusual characters and surprises. Rehearsals have not been without hiccups, but we’re a pretty experienced lot, and thanks to video links and also Josh Milner who plays “Chester the Jester” for stepping up to assist in direction to cover sickness, we’re pretty confident that “It’ll be more than alright on the night”. Refreshments will available before the show and during the interval, including a licensed bar and ice creams. Tickets have been held at pre-covid prices of £8 for adults, £6 for children and concessions or £25 for families (2+2). Book calling 07754 500874. All proceeds from the show go towards the running and upkeep of the community centre.

Anyone caught travelling on-board one of the train operator’s 2,500 services a day without a valid ticket or ‘promise to pay’ notice will be issued with the penalty fare, which is reduced to £50 if paid within 21 days. Since 2005, the penalty fare has been just £20 – but it was felt by the industry that that figure was too low and was no longer an effective deterrent to would-be fare evaders. As part of the government’s public consultation, 69% of respondents agreed that the £20 penalty fare was too low. Industry body, the Rail Delivery Group (RDG) estimates that every year around £240 million is lost through
fare evasion on Great Britain’s railways. Mark Powles, commercial and customer director at Northern, said: “The overwhelming majority of our customers – upwards of 95% - do the right thing and buy a ticket before they board one of our services. “However, fare dodgers will find themselves having to dig deep if they continue to try and travel without buying a ticket. The £100 penalty fare is a government initiative that Northern and other train operators in England will begin to enforce from today. “With more ways than ever before to buy a ticket – be it online, through an app, at a self-service machine or ticket office – there really is no excuse. It is, however, totally avoidable for everyone who travels responsibly on our network.”

Money raised through penalty fares issued by Northern will, in-line with other revenue income streams, be re-invested in the rail industry to improve the service offered to all customers. The £100 penalty fare forms part of The Railways (Penalty Fares) (Amendment) Regulations 2022. The increase in the penalty fare brings it in-line with penalty fares charged across much of Western Europe and by Transport for London (TfL) and Manchester’s Metrolink tram network. Northern’s new timetable came into effect in December 2022 and all customers, especially those who have made regular journeys on specific train times, are advised to use the new 'Check My Timetable' feature on Northern’s website to see changes specific to their local station.

A showcase of sustainable fashion, music, art and individuality by artists with learning disabilities, autism or both from ArtWorks SY is taking place at the Wentworth Woodhouse on Thursday 26th January.

Twelve sentenced following Sheffield football derby which ended in violence A total of 12 men have been sentenced for the role they played in disorder that erupted following a Sheffield football derby.
27, of Brook Green, Sheffield, Josh Moody, 31, of Birley Spa Lane, Sheffield, Carter Dobson, 26, of Blyth Road, Retford Four other men were also found not guilty of violent disorder by a jury on 16 December 2022.
On 4 March 2019, Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United met in an EFL Championship match at Hillsborough Stadium.
Detective Chief Inspector Graham Bulmer, deputy Senior Investigating Officer for the investigation, said: “This was a complex investigation, but I am satisfied to see that those who played a part on that appalling night are now facing the consequences of their actions.
In the early hours of 5 March 2019 at around 12:15am, disorder broke out at the Bloo88 pub on West Street in the city centre. Bottles and chairs were thrown and several people required hospital treatment. Considerable damage was caused to the pub. Following an extensive investigation, 24 men, aged between 22 and 52, were charged in connection to the incident. Eleven defendants pleaded guilty, with the remaining suspects appearing at trials starting in March and November 2022. The final trial concluded on Friday 16 December 2022. The following men were sentenced at hearings at Sheffield Crown Court and Teesside Crown Court between 13 July 2022 and Friday 6 January:
Brad Nicholson (pictured), 24, of Herries Road, Sheffield, Mark Foster, 52, of Granby Way, Plymouth, Tom Mulgrew, 27, of Berry Home Drive, Sheffield, Callum Warsop, 27, of Gleadless Common, Sheffield, Ryan Ward, 32, of Springwell Crescent, Sheffield, Jack Morley, 30, of Maple Grove, Rotherham, Tom Cahill, 33, of Wooldale Gardens, Sheffield, Aaron Swiffen, 30, of Peveril Close, Sheffield, Adam Birch, 35, of Hollybank Drive, Sheffield, Reece Ellis,
“We want to see fans out supporting their teams, and on the whole we see fans behaving amicably, but we will not and do not tolerate disorder. This particular night left people injured, premises damaged and put undue pressure on emergency services colleagues. “I trust those involved feel ashamed and remorseful over their actions. “We have dedicated officers who support matches that take place across South Yorkshire, and we will continue to work closely with clubs and partner agencies to keep our communities safe for the true fans of football who simply want to enjoy a day out and support their team.”
Fox Valley reports 100% retail occupancy entering 2023 The ArtWorks Trashion Show is a catwalk style event which aims to highlight issues of fast fashion and the unsustainable practices in the textile industries, at the same time celebrating and promoting uniqueness and individuality. The event will be composed of not only a catwalk of inspiring fashion created from upcycled and recycled materials, but also musical performances and art installations. The idea for the catwalk has been born from a focus on increasing awareness of sustainability in the ArtWorks studios last year which began with Sustainability Month back in April 2022. The practical activity of art making was used as a tool for making the topic of climate change accessible to the ArtWorks artists. The activities in April were really successful and inspired lots of new creative ideas, including the idea for the catwalk event. "I wanted to do a fashion show with old clothes so that they didn't end up in the bin and we could use them here. We designed the stage so it would look
like a big camera and people would walk through it. There will be plants and trees to look like they are growing down the side of the catwalk. I wanted to bring people together, work with friends as an ArtWorks team. My favourite thing was coming up with an idea and as a group making it happen. At Wentworth Woodhouse we can show our friends and families our work, we can show that we can do anything! I'm really proud of myself, we've been working really hard, we hope you enjoy seeing our work." -Hayden, Creative Lead on the Trashion Show All components of the Trashion Show are designed and produced by artists from ArtWorks SY. ArtWorks is an organisation which supports adults with learning disabilities, autism or both to flourish creatively and access professional opportunities from the art world. As we continue to settle into a post pandemic era the resilience of bricks and mortar retail is evident as Fox Valley in Sheffield demonstrates. The centre was not immune to the impact of COVID-19 with key retailers closing including Edinburgh Woollen Mill and M&Co. Fox Valley bounced back in 2022 however with a strong outdoor clothing and equipment offer capitalising on its countryside location on the edge of the Peak District. Go Outdoors opened in October taking a 17,000 square foot unit next door to cycle store, Trek and joining Regatta and Mountain Warehouse who quickly snapped up the M&Co unit following their closure. Estates Director for Dransfield Properties, James Shepherd, said: “A combination of Covid and company voluntary arrangements (CVAs) created a spike in store closures, however we’ve been pleased with the centre’s performance and its ability to attract well-known national brands as well as sustaining the high-quality independent businesses we have here.” The centre’s independent department store, Sandersons Boutique, celebrated a strong year in-troducing a number of new boutique designer ranges to its store including Grace & Mila, Pretty Lavish and FRNCH to their ladies wear which already includes Holland Cooper, Levi’s, Barbour, Bar-bour International, Whistles and Ugg. The store also has an amazing menswear collection including Jacob Cohen, Derek Rose, Levi's, Gran Sasso, Armani and now with RAINS and Superdry added.
Boasting the most exclusive range of luxury fragrances outside of London stocking Atkinsons, House of Oud, Chanel, Parfums de Marley, Initio, Montale, Robert Piguet and Marc-Antoine Bar-rois, the store also introduced Miller Harris last year and its very own bespoke oud experience for customers to discover their ultimate fragrance. A department store first, Sandersons have launched their own luxury fragrances, One and Two - an exciting addition to their extensive and unique range. Footfall has strongly rebounded and even exceeded prepandemic levels at Fox Valley, particularly over the recent Christmas season highlighting the shopper’s desire to shop in physical stores and not just online. Centre Manager at Fox Valley, Claire Biltcliffe, said: “Fox Valley has always been more than a place to carry out shopping for people. We hold weekly markets here, regular family events and have a strong eating out offer making it a popular choice for families, couples, friends and all other parts of the community to come together, enjoy the outdoors and connect with people. “Our need for products and services is everchanging but the drive to interact with people and experience social landscapes is consistent, if not more important to people than ever.” Fox Valley continues to give back to the community by holding free family events and by carrying its ongoing work with local charities recently raising more than £11,000 for Sheffield’s Hospital’s Charity.

Matt and Ray win South Yorks XC Golds Penistone runners featured strongly in the rescheduled fourth fixture of the South Yorkshire Cross Country league at Longley Park in Sheffield. The fixture also doubled up as the South Yorkshire cross country championships. Stand out performance was from Matt Robinson who claimed first place in the men’s over55 category in a time of 43-47. Another first place went to Ray Brown in the men’s over80 category. Ruby Sykes was fourth in the senior ladies race and also finished fourth overall in the series. Ruby’s time was 22-55. Another fourth place went to George Parr in the men’s under20 event. In the junior races Tadek KunickaHolda was third in the boys under15 category in 15-15. Elsewhere James Fryers had a great run to claim fourth place at the Kirkharle Shepherd’s Trail half marathon, he was also first in the men’s under20 category. Conditions were icy on the hilly Northumberland course and James could have finished higher overall but slipped on the ice with 2 kilometres to go. On the parkrun scene Flynn Rogers put in a great performance to be first finisher at the Malvern junior parkrun in a time of 7-39. VALLEY RUNNERS A mixed contingent of Valley Hill Runners and friends gathered at the Fairholmes car park at Ladybower for their annual around Derwent dam Winter run. About 30 runners took part in this social get-together which has been run for over 20 years. Unfortunately, due to repair works a complete circular route was unavailable this year with all the run being done on the East side of Derwent and Howden dams.
After an enjoyable morning, runners enjoyed a post-run lunch at the Three Merry Lads in Redmires.
Regular training sessions are still taking place on Mondays and Wednesdays from Thorncliffe Community Sports Centre at 6.30 p.m. for anyone of any running ability, or none, to join us.
