Ten days to act before hundreds of buses are cut
Louise Haigh MP, Shadow Transport Secretary has warned that the Conservatives are asleep at the wheel as hundreds of bus services face axe, without certainty over vital funding.
Today (Tuesday 7 February)
Labour will warn that there are “just ten days to act” before operators are forced to begin slashing bus routes across the country.
With the Government’s Bus Recovery Grant set to expire at the end of March communities face a crisis within days, as operators are required to give sixweeks’ notice of plans to cancel or change routes.
Louise Haigh MP for Sheffield
Heeley, is urging the Government to:
Give bus operators, communities and local leaders the certainty they need on the future of the Bus Recovery Grant
Come clean on wider longterm funding for the Bus Back
Better strategy –over half of communities are seeing no funding whatsoever from the strategy, leaving the Government’s pledge to transform bus services in tatters
Put communities in control by following Labour’s plan to give communities power and control of their bus routes and fares.
Louise Haigh MP, said:
“The Conservatives are asleep at the wheel, risking the future of services millions of passengers depend on. They have ten days to act, or services could plunge to a record low.
“After 13 years of the Conservatives, the bus services communities depend on are stumbling from one crisis to the next.
“Labour will reform the broken bus system, giving communities control of their own bus routes and fares and delivering the better bus services that passengers need.”

JAILED FOR NEARLY 20 YEARS
A Sheffield man who raped a teenager on multiple occasions faces nearly two decades behind bars.
Jamie Aron Ward, formerly of Thompson Hill High Green abused his victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, while she was aged under 16 years old.
Detective Constable Peter Bazley from Sheffield’s Protecting Vulnerable People (PVP) team said: “The victim, in this case, was a young, vulnerable teenager who Ward preyed upon and subjected to horrendous sexual abuse. “Over a prolonged period of time, Ward raped and sexually assaulted the victim, forcing her to engage in horrific sexual acts.
“Ward’s abuse was so significant and damaging that it was only as an adult the victim felt brave enough to disclose what had happened to her as a child.”
Ward, 38, was found guilty of 10 offences at Sheffield Crown Court last month, including two counts of rape, three counts of attempted rape and five counts of sexual assault. He was sentenced to 18 years in prison at the same court on Wednesday (1 February).
DC Bazley continued: “I want to commend the victim in this case for her courage in coming forward, and I am glad that she was able to place her trust in us to bring Ward before the courts.
“While this sentencing can never undo the trauma and pain of the abuse, I hope Ward’s victim can find some relief knowing he is behind bars for a long, long time.
“I also hope this case provides another example of how we will thoroughly investigate any reports of sexual of-
fending, irrespective of when they took place, to ensure we safeguard vulnerable people and get justice for victims of this despicable crime.”
Ward, formerly of Thompson Hill, Sheffield, was also handed an 18-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO), placed on the Sex Offenders Register indefinitely and given a restraining order.
Jury discharged in Deepcar laughing gas heist death trial
The jury in the trial of three men accused of killing a courier during a gun-point robbery has been discharged after failing to reach a verdict.
Arron Hartigan, Jake Lakin, and Callum Rutherford were charged with the manslaughter of Nadeem Qureshi.
Sheffield Crown Court heard Mr Qureshi died after being run down by a van in Deepcar, South Yorkshire, in July 2019.
All three men denied the charge as well as charges of conspiracy to commit robbery and a firearms offence.
The jury was discharged on Thursday after failing to reach verdicts on any of the three counts.
The Crown Prosecution Service said it intended to seek a retrial.
During the trial prosecutors said Mr Qureshi, 40, from Manchester, had travelled to Deepcar with two colleagues to deliver nitrous oxide canisters.
It was alleged the defendants had ordered the men out of the van at gunpoint in a bid to steal the consignment.
The court was told Mr Qureshi did get out and was standing next to the van when his colleague, Massimo Rizzelli, reversed the vehicle in a bid to escape and struck him.
Mr Hartigan, 26, of no fixed abode, Mr Lakin, 22, of Smithy Moor Avenue, Stocksbridge, and Mr Rutherford, 26, of Lee Avenue, Deepcar, deny the charges.

Residents give feedback on a new local bus service
More than 400 residents from across Stocksbridge and Deepcar have taken part in a survey which will help to shape the plans for a new “hopper style” community bus for the area.
The service will be funded through part of the £24.1m government investment from the Stocksbridge Town Deal, it is one of the 10 projects aimed at making major improvements in the area.
Residents were given the opportunity to comment on potential routes and how the new service could run by taking part in a survey which was available online and in Stocksbridge Library.
The consultation ran through January and closed last week with more than 400 people submitting their responses and ideas.
The bus project aims to create a regular, reliable, and sustainable Stocksbridge-based service which links with the current public transport links in the town - it’s hoped that the new service will launch later this year.
Jailed after running over police officer
A Sheffield man has been jailed for 15 months after running over a police officer while on duty in Sheffield last year.
The largest investment through the town’s fund will deliver major improvements to the Manchester Road area, with a new Library and Community Hub building at its heart. There are also plans to enhance recreation and sporting facilities across the town.
A spokeswoman for the Stocksbridge Towns Fund Board said: “We would like to thank everyone who has taken part in the survey –there is clearly a lot of support and interest in the new local bus service. We will now be going through all the feedback we have received and engaging with potential local partners to run the service.
“We know that people are keen to see this operating as soon as possible and we’re looking forward to sharing more details including a start date in the coming weeks and months.”

Rescue team thank local garage for fuel donation
GUILTY: 60 YEAR-OLD MAN OF RAPING TWO TEENAGERS
A 60-year-old Sheffield man who raped and sexually assaulted two teenagers has been found guilty of numerous offences this week.
Anthony Woodward subjected both victims, who were under 18 at the time, to repeated sexual assaults and raped one of his victims on numerous occasions.
One of his victims, who legally cannot be identified, would later tell investigating officers that Woodard would tell her not to tell anybody about the abuse. The other victim told a jury at Sheffield Crown Court about how Woodward forced himself on her and, despite her shouting ‘no’, he proceeded to rape her.
A Group of volunteer mountain rescuer’s are thanking a local petrol station for donating fuel to help keep their vehicles active and able to attend emergency call-outs in the area.
Woodhead Mountan rescue thanked Cecil Penney Garage in Penistone for their generosity and support over the years.
“We would like to give a big shout out to local petrol station, Cecil Penney Ltd, for generously donating all fuel for our three front-line response vehicles. They’ve kept us fuelled for many years, meaning we’re always topped up and ready for any call out. Especially in times like these when costs are rising, we are super grateful for the support of this trusted, longstanding local business.
Their generosity runs into the thousands of pounds (not pennies!) over of the years”
The team offers a Volunteer Search and Rescue Service serving South Yorkshire, the Peak District and surrounding areas.
Temporary Detective Sergeant Susannah Taylor from Sheffield’s Protecting Vulnerable People team said: “Woodward behaved in a predatory manner towards his victims, subjecting them to unsolicited sexual advances before carrying out his awful crimes.
“Both victims have demonstrated commendable bravery and strength throughout
our investigation and because Woodward refused to accept responsibility for his offending, they have had to provide evidence before a jury, which in itself is a daunting experience.
“They have carried themselves with dignity and gave powerful testimony about Woodward’s terrible crimes and I am pleased that he has been found guilty of multiple, serious sexual offences.
“He is now remanded and awaiting sentencing, which I hope provides some solace to his victims knowing he is no longer at liberty and can’t harm anyone else.”
Woodward, formerly of Hatfield House Lane, Sheffield, was found guilty of three counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault and two counts of attempted sexual assault at Sheffield Crown Court on Monday 30 January after a short trial.
He has been remanded in custody and will appear before court in March for sentencing.

How many of us remember drifting off into our inner thoughts? All of us, I would imagine
You may be surprised to learn that this is called self-hypnosis and is a natural brain pattern that we experience when we are relaxed, daydreaming, gazing out of the window, driving on a familiar route without thinking about it or even when we are sat watching television. During those relaxed moments, we can make the most significant positive changes in our minds. Here’s how.
Through my therapies we will learn to collapse all the misconstrued perceptions of hypnosis, first looking at what positive changes you would like to make in your life. Our sessions will then give you the tools and techniques you need to help make the changes that are right for you. Helping you move towards your preferred future and be free from the issues holding you back. You will learn there is no need to dwell on the past which can sometimes be upsetting or unsettling.
Gentle hypnosis reduces anxiety, which is achieved simply by relaxation and guided visualisation, allowing you to focus on solutions. These sessions are all about you, we work together to make the life you want reality and help you to feel like yourself again.
The hypnotherapy sessions are safe, reliable, and suitable for just about everybody creating the potential for hugely beneficial results so long as you are committed to the process and ready to change. The experience is empowering, uplifting, relaxing and above all positive. We use practical, modern, and well-researched strategies. The initial consultation includes a free halfhour relaxation recording to listen to before sleep, which reinforces the work that we do in our sessions to help you get back to feeling like the real you.

But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed. Previous solution - Tough SUDOKU board by entering numbers 1 to 9 such that each row, column and 3x3 box contains every number uniquely.

Teddy Evans' Boots and Other Stories. An exhibition of work is an enquiry into our fascination with exploration, focussing on Scott’s' ill-fated Antarctic expedition of 1910 – 1913, which is to go on display at a local art gallery, later this month.
Emma's practice often focuses on enquiry. Her inquisitive nature leads her to investigate our curiosity to explore the unknown. Working across a variety of processes, Whiting examines and captures the desperation of Lieutenant Evans' journey through the South Pole.
The Motion Community Games
The head of the Wantey Dragon sculpture above More Hall has been pushed over by mole activity. Passing walkers from Oughtibridge, Worrall and Hillsborough said a plan is in place to renovate the sculpture as the wooden parts have been decaying in recent years.
A steep walk up from near the bottom of More Hall Lane branches left to reach the dragon. Alternatively, from Deepcar it can be reached by going beyond Hollin Edge Farm at the end of Common Lane.
Best Wishes, Michael
The sound of finger nails
In an interview on Sky News Rod Stewart former Tory voter asked the Tory party to step aside and let Labour have a go, he offered money to help the NHS, and gave full support to the striking NHS staff. He finished his interview with an adaptation of one of his songs “We are failing”
Today Robert Lindsay (Wolfie) wrote this to the Tory party.
The sound of finger nails clawing to keep hold is deafening.
It’s gone on far too long.
The time has arrived to let them slip into the gutter and free us from the pain.
Tory bashing, some will call it but if it’s true it will get reported. What’s next, who knows, what we do know is there’ll be more to come for sure. You don’t have to go looking for it, keep me busy until the elections.
Message to looklocal contributor Peter Morton. Tick- Tock. Keep the faith, two years to go of this corrupt government and counting.
Regards
“We, as a race, have a desire to explore; climb the highest mountains, dive into the deepest seas, head into space, navigate the sky and travel to far flung places on the planet. Teddy Evans’ Boots is an exhibition not just about an ill-fated expedition but a ‘jumping off point’ into our own illogical desires, drivers and passions.” Karen Sherwood, Director, founder & curator.
"Observation, curiosity, emotion, practicality, are all drivers for my practice. Sometimes figurative, sometimes abstract, and encompassing a range of media, my work follows a line of enquiry."- Emma Whiting.
Teddy Evans' Boots and Other Stories will be Whiting's debut Solo Show at Cupola Gallery, featuring life-size drawings, painting, handmade books, printmaking, and mixed media sculpture. All work is for sale.
Emma's work ranges from figurative observation to abstraction. Emma uses her broad range of skills to delve into stories of exploration and illuminates some of the reasons we have for our desire to 'go beyond.'
Teddy Evans was the Navigator and first to die on Captain Scott's ill-fated
Antarctic Expedition, recollected in numerous personal diary entries from his crew. Her first encounter with Evans’ history began in Swansea Museum, where she saw the Lieutenant's reclaimed boots.
“I am compelled by the material qualities of paint, the mechanics of printmaking, the discipline of drawing. I make things to tell stories, to speak for me. I am always making something, always using my hands." - Emma Whiting.

A day full of fun, joy and laughter, brought to you by Motion Exercise and partners this February 15th at the English Institute of Sport. The games are designed to bring older adults and their families from the Sheffield community together to get active and socialise.
The Motion Community Games break down the barriers to people enjoying sport and exercise, allowing people of all ages to take part in some of the classic sports day tournaments such as the egg and spoon race.
Motion Exercise CIC, a social enterprise that believes in giving everyone the opportunity to lead a happy and healthy life is excited to announce that this event will be the first of 6 in 2023. Motion and partners at Sheffield City Trust and Golf in Society invite members of the community to get involved. The events are fun and free so why not grab a ticket now...
An activities coordinator from a local care home who came to the last Community Games with residents was asked what her favourite part of the day was. She responded:
“The social aspect of it, mingling with other care homes and the staff, they’ve made lovely friendships with you guys from Motion...Everyone will be talking about it for days and telling their families.”
If you want to come along with some friends, family or members of your community group, we welcome you to come along. You can contact us or get a ticket.

club would like to thank Peter Kenney for the generous gift which has allowed us to buy new media equipment.
“Both Peter and Marina have been fantastic volunteers for the club and are a model for all of us who work in nonleague football. We are very grateful that Mr Kenney continues to support the club by giving us this gift which will help us to improve the fan experience at Stocksbridge.
“With this new media equipment, we now have plans in place to increase the amount of video we provide. We want to show highlights of our other teams as well as provide more insight into the running of a non-league club.
Sport students rally on
Barnsley College Sport students have taken part in a fiveweek tennis leader course in partnership with professional coaches from the Lawn Tennis Association.
The course enabled the students to learn how to adapt the version of tennis, which is specifically designed to give young people with a disability the chance to play and compete in the sport. It provided Sport students with the opportunity to work with young disabled people and provided the invaluable hands-on experience of being involved in a sporting event.
Stocksbridge Park Steels will have more coverage of the club than ever follow ing a gift from President Peter Kenney made in tribute to his late wife Marina. Club President Peter Kenney volunteered alongside his wife Marina for three decades at the club. Mrs Kenney volunteered in the club kitchen helping serve hungry football fans before later working alongside her husband in the committee welcoming guests and opposition directors. She would pass away in March, with the club paying tribute to her long service before the match against Cleethorpes Town. Peter Kenney is the President of Stocks-
TEEN GYM
The club is now very grateful for a generous gift from Mr Kenney which has been made in tribute to his late wife. This gift has allowed Stocksbridge to purchase new media equipment including their own camcorder. Currently, Stockbridge showcases their highlights and interviews with manager Ian Richards but this new equipment will allow more games to be filmed as well as exclusive behind-the-scenes films which will show fans how a non-league club is run.
Stocksbridge Park Steels Media Manager Adam Allcroft said: “Myself and the
“We already provide highlights of our first team, live commentary on our YouTube channel and coverage on our website and social media channels. So with this new media equipment, we hope to take our coverage to the next level where football fans across South Yorkshire can always see what is happening at Stocksbridge Park Steels.”

The games have been shown to develop teamwork, co-ordination, cognitive and social skills amongst our Learning for Living and Work (LfLW) students. The LfLW department supports students with learning disabilities or difficulties to prepare them for independent living or supported employment.
Alice Robson, Head Coach at the Lawn Tennis Association, said: “It has been a pleasure working with Barnsley College students. They have taken on feedback well and applied themselves to developing their skills. It was fantastic to see
how they adapted the session to give students with learning disabilities the most success and gain enjoyment out of the session.
“The skills that Sport students have developed during the tennis leader course are transferrable to any sport they wish to pursue a career in.”
Amanda Sowerby, Physical Activity and Sports Co-ordinator at Barnsley College, added: “By completing this course, the students developed their selfconfidence, leadership skills and enhanced their future employment prospects. All the students involved in organising and taking part have been enthusiastic, helpful and willing to learn. They should be really proud of themselves.” For more information about our Sport courses visit www. barnsley.ac.uk/sport or email info@barnsley.ac.uk

Scrappy defeat for church
battling, 1-0 away win at Hallam at the weekend.
Sebastian Bolton made his debut upfront for Church on a blustery night.
Thackley kicked off and the ball went straight out for a Church throw in. The swirling wind gusted across the pitch and looked like it would disrupt long-ball football.

Thackley had 18 pointsing a strong start to their season. However, they then fell away with 10 points from a possible 36. Their recent form is mixed with an impressive 4-3 away win at Garforth, followed by a home defeat to Goole, and then a thumping 7-2 victory over Bottesford Town. Church on the other hand have scored 27 goals, and gained 25 points from the last 9 league matches. This twice postponed match was a great test for Church's fitness and resolve following their

Only a few weeks ago, Look Local reported on a local cyclist becoming junior British Champion.
Imogen Wolff, now 17, and from Silkstone Common represented her country over the weekend.
Representing Great Britain, the college student competed for Junior Women GB team at the World Cyclocross championships in Hoogerheide, Holland.
For much of the race Imogen was inside the top 20 but due some mechanical issues with her bike finished a creditable 23rd which was 3-37mins behind race winner Isabella Holmgren of Canada. At just 17 Imogen has a bright and exciting future in cycling.
Junior training to start again
With no game over the weekend, Globe Holidays sponsored Stocksbridge Rugby will be looking forward to their trip to near neighbours Rotherham Phoenix this coming Saturday in the next round of fixtures in the Yorkshire 4 Counties competition.
Head Coach Andy Lawrence will be hopeful of a full squad to select from for this tough but nevertheless winnable clash in Herringthorpe, with the next home fixture scheduled for 25th February against Knaresborough, with a 2.15pm kick off.
Meanwhile attention turns to the Club’s Junior section who will resume their outdoor training at Coal Pit Lane from this Wednesday starting at 5.30pm, and from 12th February, Junior Training will also return to Sunday mornings with an 11am start time.
This is to fall into line with other Club’s & the traditional junior training/match scheduling. All local juniors are welcome to attend, any age and abilities are welcome.
60th Anniversary
Interest is growing in the Club’s 60th Anniversary Celebration planned for the 4th March, after the Leeds Mods league fixture with many current and former players confirming their attendance. Places are still available from the Clubhouse or from organiser Julian Wilkinson on 07736 905176, the picture shows a few old faces at a reunion in the early 1980’s, although there maybe a few more grey hairs & extra pounds when the event comes around this time.

Stocksbridge Park Steels’ unbeaten run ended in an underwhelming way as they fell 1-0 to Consett.
The first half was not one that was going to thrill many as
Steels 0-1 Consett
back to Scott Fenwick, but he could only stab the ball wide.
Fenwick had another chance later on from close range, but an outstretched Ben Townsend was able to save it well.
the break and Consett goalkeeper Ross Coombe was caught out of his box, with him coming together with Ify Ofoegbu. While the Steels were annoyed they couldn’t continue the game as they looked to make the most of it, it was a serious injury that saw Coombe replaced by Mark Foden.
both sides struggled to create chances with the defences coming out on top. The first big chance fell to Consett as Stocksbridge were unable to clear their lines, leading to a dangerous ball coming

At the other end of the pitch, Stocksbridge were struggling to create many clear-cut opportunities. Their biggest chance came from a free kick with Tomas Poole standing other it. He tried to chip the ball to catch the goalkeeper out at the near post, but it went over.
The big incident in the first half was unfortunately an injury. Stocksbridge were on
In the second half, Consett started off as the better team but it was a break which helped them to take the lead. They quickly took control of the ball, sent it downfield and while the initial shot was well blocked by Charlie Oglesby, the ball fell to Calvin Smith who was able to fire it into the back of the net.
Stocksbridge tried to rally and extra energy was added to the team when Luke Rawson and Dylan Youmbi came on to try and rescue a point. It was Youmbi who caused the problems, who cut outside while in the box before firing
the ball onto the near post. Ross Goodwin charged in to try and knock in the rebound but there seemed to be a force field around the Consett goal as it was stopped before going out for a goal kick.
There was some controversy at the end as despite a major stoppage due to a fracas between the players due to Lewis Macaskill going for a ball substitute goalkeeper Mark Foden already had, there were only four minutes of stoppage
time which prevented Stocksbridge from launching more attacks than they would have anticipated. This meant Stocksbridge lost for the first time since they faced Worksop Town in November.
