Girl, 13, sexually assualted in Chapeltown

As police in Sheffield continue their enquiries into the reported sexual assault of a teenager in the Chapeltown area, officers have worked with the victim to produce this e-fit of a man they would like to identify.

At around 8am on Wednesday 8 February, it is reported that a 13-year-old girl was sexually assaulted by a man while she walked through woodland near to the ‘duck pond’ and Charlton Brook. The victim – who cannot be identified for legal reasons – continues to receive support from officers.

Investigating officer Wendy Howe said: “We continue to work with the victim and her family to identify the person responsible for this serious offence. We know that the incident has caused concern locally and would ask anyone with informa-

tion about this matter to come forward, especially if you recognise the individual pictured.

“As I’m sure you will understand, this type of offence is highly traumatic and sometimes this means we get new information and new lines of enquiry as the victim is able to process what has happened.

In our earlier appeals, we advised that this assault happened near Mount Pleasant Close, but we now believe that the girl was assaulted a little further off the main streets, in the wooded area close to the Chambers estate and Charlton Brook.

HIGH GREEN MURDER TRIAL BEGINS

A murder trial has heard that Sheffield man Lee Phillips died from a haemorrhage after being injured outside his home, writes Jasmine Norden for South Yorkshire Live.

The trial for William Parr, 27, began last week at Sheffield Crown Court. Parr has pleaded not guilty to one count of murder and one count of manslaughter.

Prosecuting, Mr Richard Thyne told the jury that emergency services received an 999 call in the early hours of the morning on Saturday, January 30, 2021. In the call, Mr Phillips' partner Susan Walliss said her partner had been assaulted by their neighbour and was unresponsive.

"The prosecution's case is that William Parr murdered Lee Phillips," Mr Thyne said.

He added: "The case involves a key factual disparity. Did the defendant merely push Lee Phillips as he says or did he in fact punch him with a hard blow or blows."

The jury heard that Mr Phillips, 45, and Parr were neighbours on South Road in High Green at the time. In the time period leading up to Mr Phillips' death, Ms Walliss had raised several

complaints about fires in their neighbours' garden and excessive noise.

Mr Phillips and his partner Ms Walliss had spent Friday night having a drink and watching a DVD, Mr Thyne said.

Ms Walliss had gone upstairs to get ready for bed, and then heard "raised voices" outside.

She saw her partner outside as well as Parr and another man, and went downstairs to tell him to 'leave it to the police'. But the jury heard that when Ms Walliss got outside she found Mr Phillips 'slumped'.

Police attended the scene, where they found Mr Phillips laying on his back. Paramedics attempted CPR, and Parr was originally arrested on suspicion of assault.

Mr Thyne said that Parr told officers at the scene: "He's come swinging at me and I have just pushed him back, that's all." The jury heard that at police interview Parr said Mr Phillips had come out screaming and shouting and thrown 'four or five' punches at him.

Parr told police he had pushed Mr Phillips away, and then pushed him again when he came back. The second time, he said Mr Phillips had stepped back and then hit his head on the corner of his house.

A post mortem examination was conducted by Doctor Jamie Robinson, the court heard, who described how Mr

Phillips had suffered a laceration to the right side of his chin and a deep bruising to a muscle down the side of his neck. These injuries were not usually consistent with falling, Mr Thyne said, and the former in particular was consistent with a punch or a blow.

The cause of death was recorded as a haemorrhage at the base of the brain. The court heard that the most common cause of such a haemorrhage is trauma resulting from a blow to the head or neck.

Mr Thyne added that in a further interview with Parr police found that from the ages of 11-18 he had trained as a boxer. He had competed in a number of competitions.

"This defendant was someone who knew how to punch and he'd been trained to be," Mr Thyne told the court in his opening remarks.

The case was presided over by Judge Richardson KC. Richard Barradell and James Hill appeared for the defence.

MP’s Success in Campaign to Rebuild Local School

Miriam Cates MP welcomes funding from the Government to rebuild School in Burncross

Windmill Hill Primary School in Burncross is to have a brand-new building after a successful campaign by the school and local MP Miriam Cates.

The current school building, a 1970s ‘clasp’ construction, can no longer be repaired. Over the last few years, the school has been plagued with leaks, damp and other issues that have been expensive to fix and caused disruption for students and staff.

Nicola Shipman, Chief Executive of Steel City Partnership, the Trust that oversees Windmill Hill Schools said:

“As a Trust we are delighted that Windmill Hill Primary School has been finally selected to benefit from the programme to rebuild schools. It will provide a purpose-built school that will benefit our children, the staff and the community now and for many years to come.”

In June 2020, Mrs Shipman wrote to local MP Miriam Cates seeking her support. This was after a number of unsuccessful applications for building improvements had been made to the Department for Education.

Miriam Cates said:

“When I first visited Windmill Hill I was shocked at the poor state of the buildings and the conditions in which children are expected to learn and play. I immediately wrote to the Secretary of State for Education and have had a series of meetings with Ministers and offi-

cials, seeking to persuade them of the urgent need for the school to be rebuilt.”

Finally, in December the school received the news that they had been successful and that the school had been selected for the next round of the Government’s school rebuilding programme.

Windmill Hill headteacher Simon Plant said:

“We are thrilled that Windmill Hill has been prioritised for the school rebuilding programme. Given our Good Ofsted judgement in June 2022, we are excited to continue to provide the very best we can to meet our vision of Windmill Hill being an exceptional school where every child can become a responsible citizen and reach their full potential.”

Miriam Cates added:

“I care deeply about our children's education so this is brilliant news for the school and for our wider community. Every child deserves a great education in a great school environment.”

Steel City Schools Partnership will work with the Department for Education, school leaders and the wider community to finalise plans for the new school.

Former mP Jailed

A former Sheffield MP who faked expenses claims in a failed bid to fund his extensive cocaine habit has been convicted following a trial and sentenced to four years in jail.

Jared O’Mara, the former Member of Parliament for Sheffield Hallam, and his former chief of staff Gareth Arnold have been found guilty of their roles in trying to fraudulently claim taxpayers’ money for work that was never carried out and jobs that didn’t exist.

O’Mara, who has autism, even invented an organisation called ‘Confident About Autism SY’ and along with Arnold produced fake invoices that he tried to slip through, seeking to hide behind the fact it related to his disability if ever challenged.

At Leeds Crown Court, O’Mara, of Walker Close, Sheffield, was found guilty of six counts of fraud. He was found not guilty of a further two counts. The total value of the fraud was almost £52,610. The convictions follow an extensive South Yorkshire Police investigation which included significant analysis of digital devices and financial records.

DC Kathryn Hughes, investigating, said: “O’Mara clearly viewed IPSA as a source of income that was his to spend however he wanted – and that included funding his extensive cocaine habit.

Just one more hour

A 31-year-old from Chapeltown is to cycle from Sheffield to Land’s End to honour his ‘incredible’ late Grandad.

“I can see myself thinking “ Just one more hour to go!” The challenge.

“I’d urge any residents living in the area to consider whether they heard or saw anything suspicious on Wednesday morning, or if they saw someone resembling this e-fit image.”

The route the victim is understood to have taken exits onto Arundel Road/Sussex Road and is a popular ‘cut’ through the wooded area for many dog walkers, school pupils and others.

Detective Constable Ailish White from Sheffield PVP said: “From our enquiries so far, we believe this route through the woods is used by many people, particularly in the mornings by students heading to school and people out walking their dogs.

“We’re sharing details of the route we believe the victim took that morning and some key images from the area to hopefully jog someone’s memory. Were you walking through the woods last Wednesday morning at around 8am? Were you in the area of Arundel Road or Sussex Road and did you see anything suspicious?

“Any detail, no matter how small or insignificant, could be really important.

Jamie Chester, a shift supervisor for Veolia Workshop is to embark on a 440 mile cycle ride to remember and honour his late Grandfather who passed away at the age of 89.

George Albert Drane was born in Doncaster in 1932 and spent the majority of his life in Doncaster. A plater/ welder for Mining Supplies in Doncaster, he also worked for an engineering company in Rotherham where he retired at the age of 65. He was a devoted husband married for 66 years, with two children, three grandchildren, and two greatgrandsons.

Jamie told Look Local

“Just one more hour, the thing I’m sure we have all craved after a loved one passes away. In October 2021 I lost a loved one very close to my heart George Albert Drane, known as George, Mick, Juddy, and I'm sure many other names but the one that stands out the most for me is Grandad. After a very long fight with Cancer and Alzheimers, he found peace.”

“After passing through the mourning stage, I began to think about how I could honour this incredible man and pay back for the help he received. I soon came up with this idea after restarting one of my former passions.

To cycle from Chapeltown, Sheffield to Lands End, The route will cover 440 miles and climb around 28,328ft (Circa) taking on the Peak District, The River Severn Bridge, and the unrelenting Devon and Cornwall hills in 2-3 days. The initial route is planned to be covered in just 2 days meaning 220 miles per day in the saddle. But we’re allowing a 1-day contingency for bad weather and unforeseen circumstances.

Smithy Moor community centre Is raising money for a defibrillator to be put on the external wall of the building.

The community group have already had a generous response so far to raise money for this and would like to thank everyone who has donated so far.

The aim is to raise £999 to apply for the Yorkshire ambulance service grant.

The community defibrillator (CPAD) will be welcomed by the local residents – it is vital to get a defibrillator to the scene ASAP

when someone shows signs of cardiac arrest and it can be a lifesaving piece of equipment. The ambulance service will be able to provide access to the defib with a code for the cabinet should it be required.

Got something to say?

Alert about an attempted robbery, Stocksbridge town centre

Last night (Thursday, February 9) at just before 6pm an attempt was made to steal from my backpack as I walked by the closed off-licence. A man of Balkan appearance opened a zip on my backpack to attempt to remove contents. I felt a pressure against my back and immediately confronted him. He denied doing anything. I took off my backpack and saw the zip on the small compartment was open, when I knew it had been closed, as I always carefully check (and leave nothing of value in it). This is the sort of small compartment some stupidly use to keep a purse, which obviously is what he was after. I followed him, and challenged him again twice. He kept holding back. He was with a woman of similar ethnic appearance, with a child in a pushchair. They were talking in a language that sounded likely Balkan. They stopped again, and as there was noone else around I thought better of taking a photo, and walked on to Lidl. They were behind me and seemed to be following me into Lidl, where I lost track of them until, when I got to a checkout, I saw them leave. The woman on the till said she’d seen the woman before, though not the man. It appears, then, that they are living locally. Police informed and crime number obtained.

Yours sincerely

Attention: All dog poo bag dropper dog owners

(and, of course, the ones who simply leave it anyway, without the bag!)

YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE!!!

Just how much longer do we have to endure your appalling, irresponsible behaviour? Do you consciously put two fingers up to the rest of society each time you repeat this disgusting act?

If anyone is wondering what’s brought this ongoing problem to the fore, yet again, take a walk down the fields from Bolsterstone to Hollin Busk. lt will become clear.

We all make choices in this life. You have chosen to own a dog so take responsibility for the animal and PICK UP THE POO, TAKE IT HOME AND BIN IT. The rest of us don't want to see it littering our paths and local beauty spots.

And as for the reprobate who left dog poo at the base of the trig point, well, there's absolutely no hope for you, is there?

One of many very concerned Stocksbridge residents

Dear old Codger

Thanks for your kind words. However I don't agree that we have to wait another two years for a government that begins to mend this country.

If there were enough conservative MPs decent enough to simply say the game is up and to stop collaborating with government corruption and it's corrosion of services that has lead (starting well before the pandemic) to the first reversal of increasing well being and life expectancy since the 1820s, we could have a general election this spring.

I wonder if our own MP falls into this category?

Hospice takes its message into libraries

Catherdral awarded £160k

Sheffield Cathedral has been awarded £159,000 in grant support from Benefact Trust. Spread over three years, the grant will be invested into different projects each with the same aim: to engage more people in the life, the work, and the history of the cathedral.

People have been gathering on the site of Sheffield Cathedral for more than 1,000 years. A church has stood here for at least 900 years. Cathedral status was granted in 1914. The cathedral has survived many troubled times, the Reformation, the Sheffield blitz, however, the COVID pandemic was the first time the cathedral had ever shut its doors to the community it serves. With the help of volunteers and through hiring equipment the cathedral was able to live stream some services, but this was expensive and not sustainable. With the support of Benefact Trust, Sheffield Cathedral will now transform its digital capability. Cameras in the nave and side chapels will allow the cathedral to live stream services throughout the world. In addition, six new 65-inch monitors will display information about services, forthcoming events and provide in-

terpretation about the history and the heritage of the Grade 1 listed building.

Funding has also been provided to support two new part-time roles. A Digital Communications Assistant has already been recruited. Soon, the cathedral will be advertising for a Learning and Schools Engagement Officer to develop and rollout an education programme for schools, families, community groups and visitors. This ambitious programme will include taking cathedral life into schools as well as offering children and young people the opportunity to visit the cathedral as part of their education.

But that’s not all, during the last 12 –18 months, the cathedral has experienced an increase in the number of visitors it welcomes from different countries and seen a growing congregation with people from different ethnic communities. As a result, the cathedral is going to refresh its heritage area and improve interpretation throughout the whole building.

The Very Revd Abi Thompson, Dean of Sheffield said: “This is incredibly

exciting and we are extremely grateful to Benefact Trust for their award. Sheffield Cathedral has so much potential. It’s a beautiful building with so many stories to tell. Through investing in our digital capability and in our human resources many more people will learn about everything that takes place in the Cathedral, its history, its heritage and engage with Cathedral life.”

Usman Saeed, Grants Officer for Benefact Trust, said: “We’re excited to support the multiple projects Sheffield Cathedral is undertaking to increase its reach and impact in communities locally, and across the world. Covid meant that the cathedral had to temporarily close its doors, but it’s fantastic to see that since then the cathedral has been working to open as many ‘doors’ as possible to connect with new communities.”

Any school or community group wishing to benefit from participating in the new education programmes to be delivered by the cathedral should email: enquiries@ sheffield-cathedral.org.uk

READ all about it! St Luke’s Hospice is taking its message of community support into Sheffield’s libraries.

St Luke’s Community Engagement Officer Naureen Khan is hosting a series of drop-in information sessions throughout the city, offering the chance to talk about what St Luke's offers the people of Sheffield.

The first of the sessions was held at Stocksbridge Library in January, with others planned for Ecclesall on February 16 from 11.30am to 1.30, Firth Park on February 20 from 10am to noon, Woodseats on April 10 and 24 from 12.30pm to 2.30pm and Highfield on May 15 and 29 from 12.30pm to 2.30pm.

“We're here for those with a terminal diagnosis but also their families and friends,” Naureen explained.

“We are here for all communities and all people and offer an outstanding range of services that cover all areas of palliative care.

“I am really looking forward to taking that message out across Sheffield, making new friends for St Luke’s and meeting people who perhaps have little idea of the level of support we can give them.”

Penistone Church 2-1 Hemsworth Miners’ Welfare Scorers for Church – Nathan Keightley 18, Jordan Coduri 28

A report by Martin Webb

play a long ball down the right that curled perfectly into Nathan Keightley's curving midfield run. He shot from 12 yards across goal to the left of the goal.

PCFC 1-0 Hemsworth

Church immediately won a corner on the right, the deep ball in, found a Church head on the far post which drew a great fingertip save from the Hemsworth keeper.

Goal 28 minutes.

A lovely move from Church across the pitch and back again freed up Jordan Coduri. His first time twenty-yard shot from the centre right of the pitch found the bottom left of the goal.

PCFC 2-0 Hemsworth

Church traded possession with Hemsworth who had their first real spell of pressure. Church withstood this and then pushed forward. A Keightley free kick from the left found Antony Brown who headed against the left post from 15 yards out.

Hemsworth then stung the hands of Snaith in goal and Ryan Johnson had to head clear from near the goal line. Hemsworth then had another shot well saved by Snaith.

Church put Hemsworth under pressure and continued to stretch the Hemsworth's defence, but Hemsworth had started to find their feet and the match was in the balance.

Goal 65 minutes.

Church conceded a free kick 25 yards out and Snaith tipped the ball away for a corner to the right. Church did not clear the corner well and Hemsworth recycled the ball at the third attempt. The diagonal 20 yard Nash Connolly shot from the right of the box found the bottom left corner of the Church goal.

PCFC 2-1 Hemsworth

ball in was deflected twice and skimmed over the Church bar. A nervy finish saw Church's defence stretched but they held out to get the win.

PCFC 2-1 Hemsworth

A confident first half saw Church create several great chances and score 2. Hemsworth had the better of the second half and were unlucky to come away with nothing. An entertaining match with end-to-end action saw Church come out winners with 3 more precious points.

Assistant manager John Whitehead (Pictured)

Church started with new signings Antony Brown up front and Nicky Darker in defence. A gusty chill breeze swept across the ground. Church pressed high and with the wind behind them had the better of the early rather scrappy exchanges.

After 15 minutes Church had a strong shout for a penalty when the keeper missed the ball and made heavy contact with Nathan Keightley in the box. The referee awarded a free kick to Hemsworth.

Goal 18 minutes.

Church were defending but Tom Charlesworth found space to

Hemsworth again showed promise but did not convert their half chances. Charlesworth was his usual reliable self at the right of the defence.

Half time PCFC 2-0 Hemsworth

Church kicked off the second half and were straight back into the fray with Antony Brown making some great runs into the box.

Hemsworth had their first clear opening from a corner on the

Church were then under pressure for 5 minutes with Hemsworth pushing hard for an equaliser. Hemsworth narrowly missed with a 15 yard shot from a good move down the right. Hemsworth then hit the right post with Snaith beaten.

Bradley Kemp was replaced by Jack Roberts half way through the second half. Two minutes later Hemsworth had a one-on-one but Snaith managed to put Hemsworth's Nash Connolly off his shot which went narrowly wide.

Church went up the pitch and missed a half chance, but then were exposed at the back and were again riding their luck as a

It was a game where we needed to get a result due to our last two performances which weren’t quite where we wanted them to be. We just lacked that bit of quality in the second half but we stopped the consecutive run of defeats. Credit to the lads again, their work-rate has been excellent, they always give one-hundred percent for the club and the supporters.

Now we will plan and prepare for what will be a very good Senior Cup quarter-final cup tie away at Sheffield FC on Tuesday. (14th February)

Chapeltown RBL 2-3 Sheffield South RBL lost for the first time in the league for 18 months. Legion took the lead with stand in captain Niall Smith latched on to a ball from James Birch and finished right footed to the bottom corner.

RBL doubled the lead on the hour when Adam Todd sent Morgan Cowell away, and just as it looked like he had taken it too wide he finished in off the far post left footed.

Sheffield South pulled one back after 5 minutes through a counter attack, and soon after

The game could have gone either way, and South scored late on from distance with a deflected shot.

SteeLS edged out in LincoLn

Lincoln Utd 1-0 Stocksbridge PS

it. This would be punished as when Lincoln got a chance, they took it.

The Steels didn’t clear from the corner and first Matthew Cotton’s shot was well saved by Ben Townsend.

The ball rebounded to Callum Foster who slammed it into the bottom corner, giving the Whites the lead.

The first half was one of very few chances, so we’re just going to move on to the second half in this report.

The second half started off well for Stocksbridge and that was down to substitute Lewis Macaskill who came on after the half time break. He turned his full back inside out and when reinforcements came to stop his march inside the box, he laid it off to Mitch Langton who tried to curl it around the goalkeeper, only for it to be blocked by Callum Foster.

Local Women Win

While this was a good passage of play for Stocksbridge, Lincoln were looking to double their lead and they did get chances at the other end. After some good play, Tobias Liversidge’s shot from the edge of the box was well saved and Jake Park was first onto it. Somehow, the man who scored in the last minute to beat the Steels last time out could only put it wide from close range. Tomas Poole came close from a free kick later on. Rawson earned a free kick after a shove in the back and it did seem like Poole was too far away to try the shot. But try he did and it would only be a couple of inches away from making its way into the bottom corner.

Stocksbridge Park Steels fell to their third defeat in a row when they lost 1-0 to Lincoln United.

Steels did have more of the ball in the first part of the game but they were unable to create any chances with

Macaskill was central to Stocksbridge’s next big chance as well. He went down the left and managed to get a ball across the edge of the box, though it did take a few touches and scuffs along the way, and it fell to Luke Rawson. He tried to fire home but Jack Steggles was at full stretch to stop it from nestling inside his bottom corner.

Lincoln though remained on top and they could have added more if they were able to capitalise on the counter attacks which took advantage of the Steels pressing forward. Stocksbridge’s last chance fell to Ify Ofoegbu that effort was well saved by Steggles who ensured Stocksbridge would have to wave the white flag.

Next home game: Saturday 18 Feb vs Worksop Town, 3pm KO

Oughtibridge Women's and Girls' cricket team took a fabulous win at the weekend against Sheffield Super Queens. Batting first, the Oughtibridge pairs all made solid run scores, only losing two wickets from two short catches to achieve a total of 327.

When fielding the variety of bowlers offered up by Oughtibridge and some quick fielding meant the 327 score was just too far to reach for Super Queens.

A catch off the wall by Oughtibridge on the final ball took their fourth wicket and the win. Oughtibridge Women's and Girls team are currently looking for new players, all abilities are welcome, get in touch via Social Media. (@OWMCC)

Stocksbridge trouble high flying Phoenix

Rotherham Phoenix 24-7

Stocksbridge

A short trip over the hill to Rotherham to face 2nd place Phoenix ended in defeat for Globe Holidays sponsored Stocksbridge Rugby, but not before they gave the home side a real scare with a robust and committed performance.

With Rees ‘diesel’ Aspin unavailable due to a wok incident, Head Coach Andy Lawrence shuffled the versatile Liam O’Leary into the back row, whilst Jordan ‘spud’ Fletcher was recalled to the engine room to cover for ‘slammin’ Sam Whittaker struggling with an ankle problem.

Stocksbridge also fielded six under 20’s in their starting line up : Crosby, Norman, Hannah, young Christopherson and 2 x Martins, who all gave a good account of themselves, and will no

doubt feature more often in the 1st XV.

The game, at Herringthorpe playing fields was very even for the first 30 minutes or so, both sides enjoyed territory and possession in equal measures, and you could sense the frustration from the home side, of not having all the game their own way.

Several Phoenix players earned the wrath of the official, leaking penalties and being marched a further 10 metres for some backchat, so it was a surprise and completely against the run of play when Stocksbridge talisman, skipper and scrum half, that man Adam Frith received a yellow card and 10 minutes in the sin bin for a ruck offence.

The visitors also lost prop Ricky ‘rooney’ James (back) and bustling centre Ben Tyers (groin) to injury before the break, to be replaced by rampaging bull Joe

Smith and Pat O’Leary respectively. Just as Frith returned to the fray, centre Jack Pearson received a further yellow card, and Stocksbridge faced another 10 minutes with 14 men. The blue wall creaked, and eventually the home side found some fluency and crossed the line for 2 scores late in the first half.

Half time score : Rotherham Phoenix 14pts – Stocksbridge Rugby nil.

Coach Lawrence rallied his troops during the interval, and Stocksbridge again took the game to their illustrious opponents, matching them in almost every department. A breathtaking line break by Smith was supported by ‘clock tower’ Beal and the ever eager Pat O’Leary, and nearly resulted in a 45 metre score, but the cover defence kept Stocksbridge at bay.

More good defence from the visitors lead to pressure on the home defence and eventually Liam O’Leary forced his way over from close range to get Stocksbridge back in the contest, the trusty boot of Jack Pearson, sponsored by Hamshaw Plumbing adding the conversion. Was there a shock on the cards?

The power of the Phoenix pick and go, and their close support game had Stocksbridge scrambling in defence, but the home side managed 2 further scores to take the game away from the plucky visitors.

Nearing the final whistle, 2nd row Whittaker clearly grounded the ball for a further Stocksbridge score, astonishingly and annoyingly unseen by the over officious official ! Whittaker’s subsequent comments earned him a yellow card, the 3rd for the travelling Stocksbridge squad.

Final score : Rotherham Phoenix 24pts – Stocksbridge Rugby 7pts, a scoreline which doesn’t do justice to the effort and character displayed by the visitors. The Fox Catering Man of the Match went to centre Jack Pearson for a battling display, Beal, young gun Crosby and that man Frith also featured heavily in a pretty solid team performance. ‘they know they’ve been in a tough game’ said Head Coach Andy Lawrence afterwards, adding ‘we showed a lot of grit and determination here, and the young lads in particular worked hard, we move onto next week’. Stocksbridge Rugby will travel in good spirit to Hessle next week, to play under the shadow of the Humber Bridge, before the next home fixture against lowly Knaresborough at Coal Pit Lane on 25th February, kick off 2.15pm.
