A 27-year-old man who brutally attacked his next door neighbour has been found guilty of manslaughter.
The jury heard how emergency services were called to South Road in High Green in the early hours of Saturday 30 January 2021.
There, officers found 45-year-old Lee Phillips with extensive head injuries. Sadly, he died as he was being taken to hospital.
William Parr, Mr Phillips’ next door neighbour, was arrested at the scene and taken into custody.
Temporary Detective Inspector Adam Watkinson said: “The initial call to police came from Mr Phillips’ partner, reporting that he was unresponsive as he had been beaten up by the neighbour. She identified Parr as being responsible for the injuries.
“Upon his arrest, Parr admitted he’d pushed Mr Phillips but that he had acted in self-defence.”
A post-mortem examination found that Mr Phillips died as a result of a bleed to the brain caused by a catastrophic blow. There were no injuries on his hands or
knuckles to suggest that he punched or assaulted Parr.
Further specialist testing of Mr Phillips’ injuries concluded that Parr’s account of pushing him was inconsistent with the significant, and ultimately fatal, injuries he suffered.
In a statement released (Thursday 16 February) after the verdicts, Mr Phillips’ family said: “Today has been a long time coming. Me and my family feel justice has been served despite still suffering our grief. This is something I will never forget and must live with for the rest of
my life. A big thank you to South Yorkshire Police and the barrister Mr Thyne, medical doctors and any other parties concerned. We really appreciate all you have done.”
TDI Watkinson continued: “My thoughts are with Mr Phillips’ loved ones as we reach the conclusion of legal proceedings. I know that hearing evidence of how he died in court will have been incredibly upsetting and I commend them for their strength, and for supporting the Major Crime Unit with our enquiries
“Ultimately, no police investigation or court hearing will ever bring their loved one back and can never undo the grief that Parr’s thoughtless actions that night set in motion. His anger and violence have caused unimaginable pain and sorrow and I am pleased with the verdict reached by the jury.”
Parr has been on trial at Sheffield Crown Court since Monday 7 February. He has been remanded in custody.

Chapeltown sexual assault: Man arrested
A man has been arrested on suspicion of sexual assault following an alleged attack on a teenage girl.
The 28-year-old man was arrested by officers investigating reports a 13-yearold girl was assaulted as she walked through woodland in Chapeltown, Sheffield, on 8 February.
South Yorkshire Police said the man was also arrested in connection with an alleged sexual assault on a 14-yearold girl. The attack is said to have taken place on a bus in Rotherham on 14 February.
The man, from Rotherham, has been released on bail while inquiries are ongoing, the police said.
Michael and ‘Mi shell’ take on a running challenge
Why take part in one half marathon, when you can compete in four…and raise vital funds for St Luke’s Hospice!
Personal trainer Michael King, who lives in Grenoside and is 58, will be one of the many runners on the start line of the Sheffield Half Marathon on March 26.
But once he passes the finish line, the running will continue over the subsequent three weekends as grandad Michael completes three more half marathon routes in memory of his wife Michelle, who was a St Luke’s patient before her death in 2019.
Psychiatric nurse Michelle was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2003 but having survived that initial illness, she was later found to have developed a brain tumour.
“In the end she went into St Luke’s and all I can say is that the support we received from everybody there was incredible,” said Michael.
“It might sound a strange thing to say but Michelle loved it at St Luke’s, she thought it was fantastic.
“She was there for three weeks and then she took a turn for the worse and she died in October 2019 but the care everybody gave her was really outstanding.”
Michael decided he wanted to raise money for St Luke’s, first with a funeral collection, then by taking part in Sheffield’s famous Percy Pud race, then completing a run of his own
during lockdown, followed by an ascent of Scotland’s Ben Nevis - bringing his fundraising total to more than £8,000.
And he hopes to give that amount an even greater boost with his half marathon challenge, which he will complete in a distinctive turtle shell as a jokey tribute to his wife.
“She was always ‘Mi Shell’ to me so that’s what I’ll be running in,” said Michael, whose first self-planned route will take him from his home in Grenoside to one of Michelle’s
favourite places, Wentworth Garden Centre.
He will follow that up with a run from home to Bradfield, taking in two more of Michelle’s favourite garden centres along the way.
And finally, he will run from St Luke’s Hospice in Whirlow to the Peak District town of Bakewell, another of Michelle’s top destinations.
“I will be honest and admit that I was apprehensive about Michelle going into St Luke’s because I thought it was just a place where people go to die,” said Michael.
“I couldn’t have been more wrong though - it was a positive, happy place and offered such great support to Michelle and the whole family.
“They give you support and love - and it is the love they give you that is so important.”

Be inspired and realise your potential
Women in the area are being offered a chance to realise their full potential, thanks to a 'community interest' company based in Stocksbridge.
A conference has been scheduled next month to launch the initiative aimed at inspiring LIFTing women.
LIFT is an acronym for Leading & Inspiring Female Talent, which pretty much sums up their mission. LIFT’s mission is to provide safe and accessible opportunities for all women, to inspire, unite and educate them, enabling them to realise and embrace their purpose and potential.
LIFT curate’s local female voices and expertise to provide women in the community with therapeutic activities, inspiring spoken events, and informational
workshops, all focused on the theme of female empowerment for personal and professional development.
"What really saved me and led me to finding and championing myself again after trauma therapy for domestic abuse, was the community in which I lived, and the women I was surrounded by. A natural go-getter I was able to seek out some of this unsupported. But not everyone is able to do that, and that's where LIFT helps; leaning into women in need, rather than expecting them to reach out." - Chloe Wallace, Co-founder
The LIFT launch event is taking place at Stocksbridge library on Saturday 4th March 2023, ahead of International Women’s Day. The full day conference includes an aromatherapy workshop,
health and wellbeing sessions from local Registered Nurses, and an employability course run by local HR consultants. Tickets are available now from www. liftorg.co.uk. The company encourages anyone at substantial disadvantage with an interest in attending to contact them to discuss subsidised tickets.
LIFT Yorkshire is a community interest company with headquarters in Stocksbridge, Sheffield.
Founded by local business owners, and passionate activists for gender equality, Chloe Wallace of OneSource HR Ltd and Lynsey Rowe of Fullam Ketch Fitness Ltd, the company reinvests 100% of profits back into women in the local area.

SHEFFIELD born West End Disney star Matt Croke will be topping the bill as one of the year’s most eagerly awaited live musical theatre events returns to the Crucible Theatre.
Presented by South Yorkshire youth homelessness charity Roundabout, A Night at the Musicals will feature a lineup of some of the region’s top community theatre talent.
And Matt, who starred in Roundabout’s Musical Theatre Drive-In at Meadowhall in 2021, will be back with the charity as a special guest star for the Crucible evening of musical excellence on May 23.
From mega-hit Six: the Musical to Broadway legend Guys and Dolls, Roundabout’s A Night at the Musicals combines favourite tunes from stage and cinema in one unmissable concert, showing off some of South Yorkshire’s most talented performers.
Special guest Matt Croke is best known for his starring role in Disney’s West End hit stage version of Aladdin.
Born and raised in Sheffield, Matt was a student at the Maureen Law Theatre School, Sharon Berry School of Dance and later at Laine Theatre Arts College.
Along with his acclaimed Aladdin starring role, he has also appeared in
productions as varied as West Side Story, Wicked, Funny Girl, Chicago, Grease, Singin’ in the Rain, A Chorus Line and Irving Berlin’s White Christmas.
On TV he has taken part in ITV’s The Voice UK and he has also performed on The Royal Variety Performance.
“We are delighted to be welcoming Matt back for a special appearance with A Night at the Musicals,” said Roundabout Fundraising Manager Emily Bush.
“He was a massive hit when we staged our Meadowhall Drive-In event and know he will prove even more popular on the Crucible’s iconic main stage.
“We are thrilled too that once again we have such a wealth of South Yorkshire talent waiting in the wings to entertain our audience.
“Last year’s show was a complete sellout so although May might seem a long way off right now, we do advise you to book early to avoid disappointment because the 2023 Night at the Musicals is going to be bigger and better than ever and you won’t want to miss it!”

A new weekly lunch club for the over 60’s opened its doors on Friday 17th February at High Green Miners Welfare and was an immediate sell-out.
With entertainment from Susan St-Nicholas, a raffle and two course meal, it was a real hit with local resi-
dents, many of whom signed up for the following Friday.
Lunch clubs are a valuable asset to local communities and go a long way to combat loneliness often experienced by older people.
The initiative was established by West Ecclesfield Liberal Democrat
Chef Glen and his team from the Payback Scheme, cooked, and served the meal, which was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone, receiving amazing feedback. “Working in partnership with the Payback Scheme has been really beneficial to the High Green area. The team have already done excellent work
“I have spent many years being involved in running playgroups and have always been keen to make a valuable contribution to the local community. I was very pleased to be given the opportunity as a Councillor to do more for older local residents, which gives me as much satisfaction as working with children.”

Government letter
Dear Editor, Please find below the text of correspondence for your letter's page: “Whilst the contributions from 'old codger from Oughtibridge' provide a useful and valuable individual itemisation of what is wrong with policies enacted by the present Government - economic, public services, infrastructure etc – they raise more questions than answers. Primarily, there seems to be an implicit assumption that these listed issues will be resolved by a simple change of administration. Bringing in the 'second eleven' of the 'Loyal' (to whom and what?) Opposition, so to speak, without explicit consideration of basic questions such as: a) The present framework of ideas, along with their core assumptions, upon which the model those failing and failed policies are based? b) What framework of ideas and core assumptions are required to construct a model which is more likely to produce better, more robust and workable policies for the common good? c) Whether the framework of ideas and core assumptions of any potential 'alternative' administration differ sufficiently from the model which is failing so spectacularly? In every other endeavour of human activity, other than politics and how we administer ourselves, when something is very obviously not working – ie not doing what it says on the tin - basic questions are considered. Why is this not working? Are we
doing it wrong? Are the core assumptions valid? And appropriate changes are enacted. As the physicist Albert Einstein observed, doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result represents insanity – in this case of a unique form which only people appear to be capable of generating and putting up with. We have already been down this route in 1997 and seem in danger of making the same mistake as a result of not explicitly considering such straightforward matters and nailing them down. To consider just one example among several which are immediately obvious , 'old codger from Oughtibridge' lists the valid issues of; (i) billions of pounds of wasted funds on health sector procurement which were not fit for purpose alongside; (ii) underfunded health care. Even a cursory examination of both of these listed failed policy issues reveals the impact of lobbying on producing the failed policy results itemised by 'old codger'. A process in which already wealthy corporations and individuals 'donate' money to politicians of all nominal political party's to influence policy decisions in their favour rather than the wider common good. No one at that level gives money away without expecting, demanding and achieving something tangible for themselves in return. The resulting decimation via privatisation of everything not nailed down via this process and practice is clearly a key part of producing the kind of unsatisfactory results listed by 'old codger' across a whole swathe of everyday issues. And the answer to the question of whether or not any implied change of administration would likely result in significantly different outcomes to those listed by 'old codger' do not look promising - with current public records demonstrating significant donations to key opposition decision makers from, among others, private health interests seeking to privatise the NHS. Donations which have already demonstrated concrete results in terms of public policy positions on this and other issues within what is at present the likely 'alternative' administration. Meet the new boss, same as the old boss? Consequently, making the reasonable assumption that 'old codger', among others, are serious about tackling this litany of itemised issues, the available evidence on just this one example among others available suggests that any option based on a simple change of administration is not going to produce the kind of results 'old codger' is seeking. Simply because that evidence clearly indicates no significant change in the framework of ideas, core assumptions and model being used, whatever the nominal colour of the rosette on show."

YORKSHIRE AMBULANCE WORKERS WALK OUT
Almost 1,500 GMB Union ambulance workers across Yorkshire will walked out on Monday.
Paramedics, Emergency Care Assistants, call handlers and other staff staged pickets across the county.
Workers across the ambulance service voted to strike over the Government’s imposed 4 per cent pay award and are furious over the Government’s apparent attempts to ‘smear’ them over life and limb cover on strike days.
Re: Concerned Stocksbridge Resident
These are follow up comments from those made last week by the “Concerned Stocksbridge Resident” re couldn’t care less dog owners.
The footpath field leading down from Bolsterstone has for too long now been seen by many as a dogs playground. Perhaps it needs pointing out that the footpath ONLY is a public right of way whilst the field is privately owned and used by a farmer to grow winter feed for his cattle, some of which is no use due to the amount of dog mess which is actually harmful to them. Numerous polite notices have been erected over the years only to be found either removed or destroyed.
The dogs are not at fault here. It is the owners who require the training. Let us hope that perhaps these combined comments might prick the conscience of the guilty parties concerned and shame them into a little more responsibility, not only for their animals but for the beautiful countryside in which we are privileged to live.
Carol Webster, Castle Farm, Bolsterstone.
Asleep at the wheel
So, Louise Haigh, MP for Sheffield Heeley, Look Local Thursday February 9th, claims the Conservatives are asleep at the wheel when it comes to bus services, and that “Labour will reform the broken bus system, giving communities control of their own bus routes and fares and delivering the better bus services that passengers need.” Really? Does she not recognise that accountability for bus services lies with the Labour run South Yorkshire Mayoral Authority and has done since its inception in 2018? That Greater Manchester under Andy Burnham is now implementing the franchise system that delivers precisely what she describes; and when the West Yorkshire Mayoral Authority was formed in 2021 it started the bus franchising process immediately. The Liberal Democrats on Sheffield City Council have been demanding a move to bus franchising for years, each time being voted down by the Labour Group. Yet South Yorkshire started the process just last year, fully five years after it was formed. Now that’s what I call “asleep at the wheel”.
Councillor Mike Levery Liberal Democrat Councillor for West Ecclesfield Ward Sheffield City Council
Government-Funded Local Bus Project
I am pleased that Stocksbridge and Deepcar have been awarded funding by the Government for a local ‘clipper-style’ bus service as part of the Stocksbridge Town Deal.
Given the challenges we face in the valley in relation to connectivity and public transport, a new local bus service is a positive step forward. The aim of the service will be to connect residential areas in Stocksbridge and Deepcar with the places that people want to get to in the local community.
Bolsterstone is currently without a bus service and it is vital that this new local Towns Deal bus service includes the village. Bolsterstone’s proximity to Stocksbridge and Deepcar makes this something that can be realistically achieved. The benefits would be substantial given that residents in Bolsterstone are currently completely cut-off. I have reiterated to the Towns Deal Board my strong desire for Bolsterstone to be included in the route and I hope this will be taken into account when the details of the route are finalised.

South Yorkshire Leaders Back Boost to Fix Public Transport
SOUTH YORKSHIRE leaders have backed a £1.1 million boost to fix local public transport pressures.
The 2% annual budget increase for transport from local councils in the region comes despite continued pressures on local government finance, and is the first uplift of its kind since the start of austerity over twelve years ago.
Mayor Oliver Coppard called the move a ‘real signal of intent’ in support of his plans to fix South Yorkshire’s public transport system; but warned it won’t go far enough to prevent further cuts with-
out intervention from Government.
South Yorkshire’s Mayor, Oliver Coppard, said:
“My vision is for a greener, smarter, integrated transport network that our communities can rely on.
“Bit by bit we’re trying to make things better for the travelling public and this is a real signal of intent - we are taking the important first steps on our journey to fix public transport in South Yorkshire.
“But while the levy increase will help us to act now to secure longer-term financial sustainability for our buses, trams and
trains, it does not make the crisis facing public transport go away – we still can’t afford to protect all South Yorkshire services from cuts when our emergency budget expires. We will face hard tradeoffs across the board.
“That’s why I’ll continue to fight for the funding and the powers to build a better transport network for South Yorkshire; to continue to call on Government to maintain existing national support. Because our community deserves a proper rescue plan, not a series of sticking plasters that patch-up a broken public transport system. We’re doing our bit, now
Government need to do theirs.”
The move follows a £12.3m emergency rescue package from the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) to protect bus routes and school services from cuts by operators, in addition to incentivization and cost-ofliving packages including the 18-21 concession and the Mayor’s £2 fare-cap.

A needle in a haystack to try and find the source of the Hole House Lane leak
By James Fletcher
Residents of Hole House
Lane, Stocksbridge have been left perplexed for over a year as to why Yorkshire Water has not yet been able to identify the source of the leak.
February is normally a good time for garden ers in the south, but in northern and colder areas, wait until March. By following a few basic principles you can enjoy a lovely display later in the year.
Cuts should be about 5mm above a bud and slope away from it. With bush or shrub roses, cut to an outward-facing bud to encourage an open centre. Make clean cuts using sharp secateurs, or a pruning saw for thicker stems. Remove dead, diseased and damaged stems along with weak stems or ones that are cross ing over others.
Hole House Lane is a main road connecting Manchester road to Bolsterstone and is used not only by the residents and other road users but is also a main bus route for the stagecoach number 57.
According to residents, the
The council have taken note of the potential hazard of ice and snow on that road during the continued work, placing warning signs on the side of the road.
A Yorkshire Water spokesman responded to the continued problem on Hole House Lane, “Issues on Hole House Lane are taking a little longer to resolve than usual, due to the complexity of the network in the area and some inaccuracies in the mapping of underground pipes. We’d like to thank our customers for their patience, we are dealing with this as a priority and will fix the issue as soon as possible.”
Gardening in February is all about enjoying the early signs of spring and getting ready for the growing season. No matter what the size of your planting space, you can lay the groundwork now for a beautiful display in the warmer months.
If you only do one thing this month you should get ready to feed your plants. They're about to have a huge growth surge. However, if you look after your soil the plants will look after themselves.
Most soils benefit from the addition of well rotted organic matter in the form of garden compost that improves soil drainage and enriches the soil with nutrients. Which is why making your own garden compost is a nobrainer – it’s easy, it’s free and it makes your garden grow.
So, thrifty tip for the month is …make your own compost bin - it can cost you absolutely nothing if you recycle and re-use old materials. If you have an old plastic dustbin with a lid, you have a composter. Drill about fifteen 1-2cm holes in the sides of the bin and approx six holes of the same size in the bottom. Place the dustbin on bricks to allow for drainage. Fill it with your composting materials and to mix the ingredients simply roll the bin around on the ground. It’s always good to start your compost from someone else’s so get a friend with good compost to give you a bagful. It will contain all the right bacteria, insects and worms to give yours a kick start. For successful composting you need to mix brown materials with green materials and add a bit of water to keep it moist. A good ratio is two thirds brown (newspaper, shredded cardboard, straw, paper tissues, dead leaves, sticks and stalks) to one third green (fresh grass clippings, spent flowers, coffee grounds, teabags, kitchen scraps, crushed egg shells and plant prunings).
Some of the best plants to prune at this time of year are roses, which should be pruned in late winter and early spring. Advice from the RHS (Royal Horticultural Society) is that
A plant that needs little pruning is the heav ily scented Hamamelis or witch hazel. The colour is a lovely addition to the garden dur ing winter, the fragrance is delightful and the autumn foliage is stunning. Although their branches can spread as they mature and some may end up wider than higher there are op tions for smaller gardens.
If outside space is limited go for a variety with an upright habit of growth which spreads out less and casts less shade. Witch hazels are happy in any soil so long as not waterlogged or chalky and are hardy plants that can be grown pretty much anywhere in the UK. Pruning is often not necessary, but if you have to then snip back to two buds from the base of last year’s growth. Mulch in the autumn or early winter. Some popular varieties include ‘Jelena’ – a prolific grower with large, densely packed orange flowers and spectacular autumn foliage, ‘Wisley Supreme’ – a great combination of large bright yellow flowers and strong scent, and ‘Sunburst’ – a narrow upright growth ideal for small spaces with unusually large, pale yellow flowers.
The RHS Gardener’s Checklist for February:
• Take root cuttings
• Cut back perennials
• Clean your tools
• Warm the soil by covering with cloches
• Refresh winter pot displays
• Mulch perennial veg
• Prune deciduous hedges
• Trim winter heathers
• Sow peppers and chillies indoors
• Tidy citrus plants
This is not reassuring for the residents who have to continue to live with the uncertainty of when the problem will be resolved, providing no time scale. The only positive is that Yorkshire Water is taking this matter seriously giving the issue priority status as Yorkshire Water continue its investigation into the matter.

Chapeltown hockey
The Maroon Platoon's games were split over the weekend this week. The Ladies 1st took on an experienced Hull Hawks side on Saturday in the 1.30 game at Westfield.
The sides were well matched and although Chapeltown had the more clear cut chances they couldn't make any stick.
A good performance from Linz Boulby in goal repelled any threat from the East Yorkshire team with the game finishing honours even at 0-0.
The Mens 3rds were pitched against Sheffield University Bankers 7s in the other Saturday game at Westfield. Chapeltown started the better side and were soon 1-0 up thanks to a penalty stroke conversion by Welsh international Antony Wyatt. The Bankers team then came more into the game with the half time scoreboard showing 2-1 to Chapeltown.
The boys in maroon upped their game in the second half and finally broke the SU Bankers spirits with 3 goals in quick succession. A further 2 goals left the final scoreline 7-1 to Chapeltown. Scorers Antony Wyatt (4), Dan Harmes, J Barker and Craig Burgan.
The Mens 1st team travelled to Leeds Uni on the Sunday morning for an early start. Despite a depleted squad the Maroon Platoon stepped up to the plate with a 9-2 victory to keep them top of the table with 5 games to go. Goals from Josh Gemmil (2), Ed Mallinder (2), David Hadwick (2), Phil Foster (2) and Max Robinson.
The Ladies 2nd team were away at Doncaster on Sunday and put in another spirited performance with the scoreline 4-0 to the home side.

referee has bottled a massive decision with two minutes left on the clock.
I’m not disappointed in the way our lads have approached the game and the effort they’ve put in I’m more disappointed with the man in the middle We can’t really lay the blame at anybody but collectively we haven’t taken any of the many chances we’ve created and it feels like a defeat.
We’ll lick our wounds and move on to the Eccleshill United away on Tuesday (21st Feb 7-45 pm kick off)

People will probably expect me to berate the referee but I’m not going to give him the satisfaction of that, his performance doesn’t deserve it. The first half we were weren’t quite at the races, that said we were competitive and we created the chance that got the opening goal.
The ref’s decision at the end, in any game up and down the country from under sixes right up to over forty-fives it’s a penalty kick.

A summary by Martin Webb Church had enough chances to win 3 games, but they paid the price for not taking them.
Knaresborough to their credit played well and took their one clear chance. Overall, a disappointing afternoon saw Church come away with a just single point.

Youngsters shine in high scoring win’
Globe Holidays sponsored Stocksbridge Rugby made the trip to Humberside, to take on Hessle in the foothills of the scenic Humber Bridge, & came out on top in a 12 try thriller, eventually winning by 48pts – 33pts. Stocksbridge were able to include Reece ‘diesel’ Aspin in the back row, whilst Jordan ‘spud’ Fletcher kept his starting spot in the engine room. Paul Kelly returned to partner that man Adam Frith in the halves, & the back line had a youthful look to it with teenagers Harrison Norman & birthday boy Logan ‘whiskers’ Hannah on the flanks. John Saddington also made a welcome return at full back. Hessle provided a big rumbling pack, with a simple but reasonably effective game plan based around possession, but Stocksbridge were more than able to counter this with ‘clock tower’ Andy Beal, Gary Woodcock & Fletcher more than matching the hosts.
The visitors struck first with Beal, sponsored by Mr M Gribbins, latching on to short Pete Newton pass to take a couple of defenders over the try line with him. Jack Pearson, sponsored by Hamshaw Plumbing, adding the first of his 5 successful conversions for the day.
Fletcher, sponsored by Club Chairman, Mr A Bell, was next on the score sheet crashing over from close range after further good work from the dominant Stocksbridge pack. Despite a fantastic try saving tackle from John Sadding-
ton, Hessle were on the scoresheet themselves soon after, when the visitors failed to deal with a loose ball however, Pearson nudged Stocksbridge further ahead with a simple penalty after a ruck offence by the home side. Despite a further score for Hessle, Stocksbridge replied with the try of the day as a break by Jack Spencer, was supported by Newton & then Beal, the ball was recycled thru that man Frith & shipped along the line for young flyer Logan Hannah to round the full back for an excellent score. Stocksbridge kept the pressure on & were rewarded close to half time when the hard working Pete Newton, sponsored by Mrs M Bell finished off some good go forward as Andy Lawrence’s game plan was followed & paid dividends. Half Time : Hessle RU 14pts – Stocksbridge Rugby 29pts.
Stocksbridge, playing with some confidence & style, opened the scoring early in the 2nd stanza with the ‘clock tower’ Beal bagging his 2nd try of the day, hitting a gap in the Hessle defence from a deft pass by Newton. Despite a couple of opportunist tries from the home side, Stocksbridge were always controlling the game & were comfortable with a 3 score lead. Jet heeled youngster Harrison Norman squeezed in for a try in the corner after unselfish work from Kelly, & Aspin. Spencer broke free after a pass from Kelly, but failed to see the supporting Pearson & a try went begging however, there was still time for
14 goal thriller
John Saddington, sponsored by Mr N George, to complete the try scoring & an impressive personal performance picking a nice running line thru a tiring defence. With the cue in the rack & a bonus point victory secured, Stocksbridge seemed to switch off just before the final whistle, allowing Hessle to score their 5th try. Final Score : Hessle RU 33pts – Stocksbridge Rugby 48pts. This impressive win on the road now gives Stocksbridge some daylight from Nestle Rowntree in 7th place in the Yorkshire 4 Counties league ladder, & with many outstanding performances, the Goodlad Contracting Man of the Match award was presented to youngster Harrison Norman for a complete performance & a try to boot. Beal, Newton, & Aspin stood out in the forwards as did Frith, Pearson & Hannah in the backs. Head Coach, Andy Lawrence was pretty pleased with his troops & their display as he said ‘ we are improving with every game, & the hard work in training is paying off in the execution of the game plan ‘. These sentiments were echoed by Skipper Adam Frith as he declared ‘ to put nearly 50 pts past a team away from home is something we should celebrate’.

NeXt Big NaMe iN BritiSh Motor raCiNg to SteP UP to SeNior KartiNg
The next big name in British motor racing, a Sheffieldbased rising star, is taking the next step in his journey as he goes from Junior to Senior Karting.
Since the age of five, Rowan Campbell-Pilling has com peted in kart racing across the UK most weekends, win ning a multitude of trophies along the way.
In his third season in the Daniel Ricciardo Series, he was crowned UK junior kart ing Champion, the youngest ever winner of the National Series, at the age of 14. Now as a 16-year-old, he is begin ning to compete in the senior ranks of karting in both Iame X30 Series and the Daniel Ricciardo Series.
In his Iame x30 senior karting debut at Kimbolton International Kart Circuit on February 12, Rowan impressed against a strong field taking
the win in the final by over four seconds and was the only driver not to be passed on the circuit all weekend.
Around his karting, Rowan is one of less than 40 young drivers in the country testing Formula 4 and GB4. He has
been racking up mileage at the very best of UK circuits such as Silverstone, Oulton Park, Donington and Snetterton in a Formula 4 single seater race car as part of the prestigious Arden’s Young Racing Driver Academy programme.
Arden provides a unique pathway from karting to F1 and is headed by the wellknown Horner Family who have worked closely with drivers from karting to race cars and Formula 1.
Rowan has spent hundreds of hours driving race car simulators, similar to those used by Formula 1 drivers, regularly practising high speed handling and the 16year-old has already covered over 5,000 miles of actual racetrack high-speed testing at speeds of up to 150mph.
Rowan said: “My focus for 2023 is to win the Daniel Ricciardo Series UK Senior Championship. Even though it will be my first season in senior karting, I have committed a lot of time to training as this could be my last year in karting before taking to racing cars full time.”
“Testing Formula 4 has been amazing, it’s an incredible experience and I have loved every minute preparing and testing in the race car as I continue to progress through my two-year Formula 4 testing programme with Arden.”
Rowan’s Chief Race Engineer and Team Manager, Jack Woodhouse, said: “This young racing driver continues to impress as he moves from karting to full race spec cars. His application and focus have been exemplary and he is standing out as someone to keep a close eye on.”
This month, Rowan has visited Ice Drive Sweden, with Tom Canning from Aston Martin Racing, to drive a BMW 130i on a frozen lake. He will be following in the footsteps of many Formula 1 stars such as Kimi Räikkönen and Valtteri Bottas who honed their craft there.
By spending five-hours a day driving in extreme conditions with the help of a professional ice driver, Rowan will drive on the ice for the first time outside of karting and will be able to fine-tune his skills to perfect his car control.
Conscious to give back, Rowan was also recently announced as an Ambassador to The Children’s Hospital Charity. He has supported many charities over the years but feels a particular affinity to the Children’s Hospital team.
He was born in the Jessop Wing, just around the corner from the hospital, and then he was admitted there two months later for a serious chest infection. He also recently needed an x-ray and again made use of the outstanding facilities at Sheffield Children’s.

Steels lose to champions-elect
free-kick was headed back to the edge of the box by James Hanson to Sam Wedgbury. He hit a powerful shot which then took a massive deflection which thankfully went wide.
Worksop would get their goal and it was again a set piece that caused the problems. The initial ball caused problems and it wasn’t cleared properly, allowing Jay Rollins to get onto the ball and finish smartly into the bottom corner.
League Cup final run, who used his height to knock a ball down for Josh Wilde who duly finished from close range.
Stocksbridge did get right onto the ball afterward and Dylan Youmbi, a man who might soon never have to buy a pint in Bradford if he can continue to perform as he has been for Stocksbridge, was able to get onto a long ball and move
into the box. His shot though was saved by the legs of Malkowski. Following that, Worksop managed the game well and disrupted any potential Steels momentum, allowing them to return to Bassetlaw with the three points.
Stocksbridge Park Steels’ losing run continued with a 2-0 loss to Worksop Town.
Worksop were on a long unbeaten run and they started like that by having most of the ball. Despite that, the first big chance would go Stocksbridge’s way. They caught the Worksop defence out on the counter-attack and Lewis Ma -
caskill was able to turn his defender inside out before sending a shot at goal. Unfortunately, former Polish international Sebastian Malkowski was able to make the save.
The Steels could count themselves lucky they didn’t fall behind later on though. Former Scunthorpe United man Terry Hawkridge’s
In the second half, Stocksbridge were able to get off to a much better start, though it was helped by having the wind behind them for this half. While they were able to get the ball into better positions in this half, the Worksop defence were able to make sure they weren’t able to create any clearcut chances. This frustrated the Stocksbridge attack as every foray forward seemed to end in either a poor pass or a good defensive play.
The game was always likely to be decided on one big chance at either end with both defences looking solid in the second half. Unfortunately, that chance ended up going Worksop’s way. It was Hanson, a player who never has to buy a pint in Bradford following his heroics for the Bantams in their
