CLEAN AIR ZONE CHAOS

LocaL MP Miriam

cates has called for urgent changes to Sheffield’s new clean air Zone given “serious flaws” in its design and introduction.

Mrs Cates, who represents Stocksbridge, Ecclesfield, Chapeltown and High Green, has said that businesses across North Sheffield and beyond are suffering significant disruption and being disadvantaged by the CAZ. She recently met with businesses in Chapeltown and Ecclesfield who have been unable to access Council support to upgrade their vehicles because they are based in the suburbs.

Among the problems that have been raised with her are the lack of exemptions for buses and taxis, limits

on the vehicle upgrade subsidies, and charges for using the inner ring road to travel across the city.

After meeting with local businesses and speaking to residents, Miriam Cates said: “it’s clear that there are serious flaws with the CAZ, and that the Council is doing real damage to businesses across Sheffield.

“Imposing charges on buses and including the ring road in the scheme are forcing people into private cars and onto residential roads - the exact opposite of what the CAZ is meant to achieve.

“At a time when many companies are struggling to deal with higher costs of energy and fuel, this anti-business policy is only going to cause further suffering. There is

no legal requirement for the CAZ to charge buses, and it doesn't have to include the ring road. I’m calling on the Council to make these changes as soon as possible, and to undertake a full review of whether current pollution levels actually meet the threshold for a CAZ. “We should be doing everything we can to support business in Sheffield - whether they’re based in the city centre or outside."

Miriam Cates has previously written to Sheffield City Council informing them of the concerns that have been shared with her by local businesses and has also written to the Local Government Secretary Michael Gove to raise the issue.

Areas we cover are Stannington, Wisewood, Hillsborough, Chapeltown, Ecclesfield and High Green.

One in a million

The man with the pram nears million mark

John Burkhill has been pounding the streets of Sheffield for more than 15 years and has raised £915,679 for cancer research.

The 84-year-old is affectionately known as the man with the pram by all sides of the city and became a household name in the process brushing shoulders with the likes of Olympian Jessica Ennis and Actor Shaun Bean.

Mr Burkhill has been recognised for his efforts, not only featuring on television, but he has also received the British Citizen Volunteer Award earlier in the year which became his second accolade since venturing on his remarkable journey.

With his iconic green frizzy wig and big green foam hand, he uses to high-five his supporters, pushing the decorated pram that belonged to his late daughter whom he suddenly lost in 1991 and then his wife to cancer.

Burkhill celebrated his 84th birthday on the 4th of January of this year and has vowed to have raised the ‘magic million’ by the time he turns 85.

‘The man with the pram’ has less than £100,000 left to raise by the time his next birthday comes around and with help of the

local community John Burkhill looks well on his way to achieving his target.

This remarkable human being has also run over a thousand organised races, including marathons. John has never wavered from his target despite the weather, walking the streets of Sheffield with a big smile on his face high fiving passers-by as he does so.

And many people will not want him to stop once he reaches his target as he brings a ray of sunshine to the city and to your day when you bump into him in the street, John Burkhill is the definition of a true legend and deserves every ounce of praise.

As John told the BBC, “I am so lucky that the people of Sheffield and Yorkshire have been so generous. To me they are the legends, they’re the ones that are doing it, they’re the ones who are putting the money in the bucket.”

But it’s the people of Sheffield who think otherwise, as local resident also told the BBC, “He’s just a legend isn’t he, he’s always here whatever the weather. But yeah, he is a top bloke and he’s been doing it for a great cause, and I love the guy.”

Furniture Clearance Warehouse Due to Close Its Doors

The cost of living is on the rise, flytipping is on the rise. Coincidence?

After 23 years of trading

Furniture Clearance Warehouse is closing its doors. The owner, David Perkins has successfully run the business for over two decades, but is now ready for a change.

What more could the Sheffield City Council do? With fly-tipping on the rise, and the cost of living going up.

Furniture Clearance Warehouse

So, if you’re a local business and wish to expose some waste you can’t do it without a permit or pay for extra days above your maximum of once a month drop off.

You have probably seen the amount of rubbish people have been dumping all over our beautiful countryside, from bags of rubbish, and mattresses to tyres. And it has sparked outrage on social media with people posting pictures near where they live of what people have dumped at the side of the road.

So, the council expect you to hoard the rubbish from all of the jobs you have done for the month before taking it to the dump and the size of the rubbish could vary from job to job.

Furniture

Which is outrageous in any shape or form, with the constant question of, “why don’t they just take it to the dump?” Well as I don’t condone fly tipping whatsoever, I do get why they do it or at least why some of them do it.

After 23 years of trading Furniture Clearance Warehouse is closing its doors. The owner, David Perkins has successfully run the business for over two decades, but is now ready for a change.

The shop was an immediate success and within a couple of years gave to bigger premises in the old Co-Op building on The Moor behind Redgates. The business traded here happily and successfully for several years until the council decided the building was required for other purposes.

Independent skip prices range from £135.00 to £275.00 depending on the size, with the cost of living constantly on the rise, and with the police stepping up their patrols to catch out the fly-tippers.

times bigger than the original store and focusses solely on selling furniture. This also saw the business change names to Furniture Clearance Warehouse. Although all these years later, customers still refer to them as SWAG.

Could the Council do more to help, by simply collaborating with the general public to come to a solution of taking rubbish to the dump and prevent any further fly-tipping?

In 2006 the company moved again to the old Doors and Floors Galore warehouse on Attercliffe Road and traded for around a year before the

According to the Sheffield City Council website. If you wish to take your rubbish to the dump and don’t have a car you must apply through the Sheffield City Council for either a one-day approval which takes one working day to receive, if you are a business or require a yearly permit this can take up to 10 working days to come and only allows up to a maximum of 12 visits a year.

a closing down sale starting Monday 19th September. This is by no means a business that is going bust, merely an owner who wants to dust of his passport and get to know his family in the daylight hours.

The business predominantly sells living room, dining room and bedroom furniture. Selling end of line, over stocks and exdisplay from the big multiple furniture stores. There is something to suit every budget.

It is not a one-way street and have some people have been left with little choice but to dump at the side of the road?

The owner, David has decided after working long hours and weekends for the last 23 years to start a new chapter. With no one to take over the reins of the business, it will begin

So, you can get the police to chase them down and prosecute them to the full extent of the law, but is that really going to solve the problem?

The owner is grateful for all the support and custom over the years and is looking forward to the next chapter.

Mother & daughter crowned Champions

Kate and Violet Clarke could be on their way to Sun City, South Africa after winning the British Bench Press Championships in Newcastle.

The local mother-and-daughter duo seem to be a well-oiled machine. Before the British Championships, both of them did a clean sweep at the Yorkshire and Humberside competitions that were held in January. The competition consisted of a squat, bench, and deadlift which both Kate and Violet won to go on to the next phase.

Both aspire of representing Team GB in South Africa and now with both winning in Newcastle, they have qualified for team selection ahead of the competition.

Kate won two titles at the British Championships the first in her age +39 age bracket also known as M1 before going on to win the open age bracket as well, so a pretty comprehensive victory for the Clarkes.

Violet had similar success, winning the sub-junior which is the under-18 age bracket and becoming one of the youngest to ever win at just aged 15 years old. But lost out on the open age bracket to her mother.

And now both have their eyes on the Sun City prize, should they be picked for Team GB for this year’s World Bench Press Championships. In South Africa. The pair both train at AFK Gym in Hillsborough.

Child poverty

Dear Editor,

It is hard to believe that nearly a quarter of children in our constituency, Penistone and Stocksbridge, are facing poverty. That means in every class of 30 children, seven of them are without enough to eat and living in cold homes.

Sadly, the situation is getting worse by the day. The Trussell Trust, the foodbank organisation, say that requests for food parcels across Yorkshire and Humberside have tripled since 2015.

I grew up here, Penistone and Stocksbridge is my home and it is heart-breaking to know that 3,351 local children are living in poverty - going without the essentials in a country as rich as ours.

The Tories crashed the economy and working people are paying the price of the cost-of-living crisis engulfing families, disabled people and pensioners.

This constituency and our country has extraordinary potential, and Labour has a serious, long-term economic plan that puts working people first.

Labour will establish breakfast clubs for all primary schools. We have a plan that will ensure that every child has the best start and opportunities to fulfil their potential.

It’s time for a Labour government to deliver a fairer, greener economy with better jobs and living standards.

Enough is enough, we need change.

Marie Tidball, Labour’s parliamentary candidate for Penistone and Stocksbridge

Any Questions

Dear look local

Other readers may have heard our MP Miriam Cates this week on Radio 4 'Any Questions'.

On a question about changing your mind she told listeners she had changed her mind on which party she votes for and on whether we should be in the European Union.

She could change it again by stop helping to prop up a regime that for 13 years has undermined the standard of living of most people while allowing some, including those at the heart of party and government eg The Prime Minister to become ridiculously rich.

The need for food banks , people sleeping on streets, neglected young, old and disabled people are the mark of the Tories she changed her mind to join. Question time ...Why ?

Real Solutions – Not Feasibility Studies

We all know the 57/57a bus service in our area is not good enough. That is why I have been pushing Stagecoach for a further timetable revision to the 57/57a route to improve reliability, restore a service that people can trust and then work to increase its frequency.

Labour introduced an amendment at Sheffield City Council’s budget meeting on 1 March to allocate £50,000 for ‘feasibility studies’ to ‘see what more could be achieved in the short and long-term’ in relation to buses. Impartial observers will likely note the vagueness of this, the fact that it does not actually commit any funding to improve bus services (or refer to any other sources of funding) and therefore is unlikely to make any material difference to the service.

This is in stark contrast to the Government that has provided funding to actually deliver a new local ‘clipper-style’ bus service in Stocksbridge and Deepcar.

We need serious answers to what is a serious issue. The South Yorkshire Mayor must formulate a sustainable funding model for the 57/57a and we need a timetable that ensures the bus turns up when it should.

Tree-mageddon

Dishonesty with the public over the tree fiasco in Sheffield

A Report says events surrounding felling of thousands of trees was a ‘dark episode in Sheffield’, Writes Helen Pidd for The Guardian.

“Deluded” councillors in Sheffield behaved dishonestly and destroyed public trust by mishandling a dispute over the unnecessarily felling of thousands of healthy trees in the city, an independent inquiry has found.

Sheffield city council twice misled the high court during the fierce row, during which elderly residents were arrested when trying to protect trees from the chainsaws.

On another occasion, the council applied for an injunction against one of its own councillors, Green member Alison Teal. The council took her to court for breaching the injunction, only for her to be found not guilty.

Public opposition to what became known locally as the “chainsaw massacre” grew, but senior council leaders paid no attention. “Out of touch with what significant numbers of local people thought, and how the strength of feeling was growing, they were deluded into believing all was well,” writes Lowcock.

He heard evidence of a “bunker mentality” within the council’s senior leadership team which hardened as opposition grew, and “a culture that was unreceptive to external views, discouraging of internal dissent and prone to group-think.”

“From 2016, the council rejected many of the recommendations the ITP made in good faith to save trees. Setting up an independent panel, misleading it and then ignoring substantial numbers of its recommendations was destructive of public trust and confidence,” writes Lowcock.

The Felling review – blood-boiling film of battle to halt Sheffield’s Treemageddon

“While it did not affect the outcome in either case, it is still a serious matter that the court was misled,” writes Lowcock. He said he had taken legal advice as to whether any

individuals from the council had committed perjury but decided they had not.

South Yorkshire police came under fierce criticism for the arrests, particularly the use of an obscure clause in trade union legislation, which the police watchdog ultimately ruled was wrongly applied. When the force said it wanted to stop the arrests and that they were taking up too much police time, the council replied with a “strongly worded letter” in March 2017.

The local authority felt “very let down by the force” and that it was, “a dereliction of the police’s obligations to fail to support the council in its delivery of its public law duties by failing to make arrests when the criminal law is breached”.

The dispute raged for years. By March 2018 the council’s head of press was warning his chief executive of the reputational damage being done to the local authority. “Put simply, there is no good picture of older residents being arrested. There is no good way to photograph a tree lying in the street,” wrote James Henderson.

Lowcock concluded: “The dispute did significant harm. Thousands of healthy and loved trees were lost. Many more could have been. Sheffield’s reputation was damaged. Public trust and confidence in the council was undermined. It has not been fully rebuilt.” Many of the senior officers and councillors involved in the dispute declined to attend the public hearing. They included Julie Dore, the Labour leader of Sheffield council from 2011 to 2021, who spoke to Lowcock in private. In a statement, Sheffield council said: “The council has already acknowledged that it got many things wrong in the handling of the street trees dispute, and we wish to reiterate our previous apologies for our failings. We have taken huge steps already to ensure past mistakes are not repeated and we hope the release of this report will further help us to learn lessons as we move forward from the dispute."

Mothering Sunday: A salute to mothers

Sunday the 19th of March the UK celebrate mothers who have nurtured us and helped guide us all on our journey., James Fletcher looks into Mothering Sunday.

Whether you call her mom, mam, mother, mommy or mama. She is and always will be the most important woman in your life. The woman who kissed you boo-boos, the one who tucked you in at night and read you bedtime stories, the woman who kept you safe from harm throughout your life.

There is so much that our mothers do for us and expect nothing in return.

We as a society have celebrated Mother’s Day since the Greeks and Romans held festivals in honour of the mother goddesses Rhea and Cybele. And this celebration has continued throughout history and even though we don’t hold festivals in the UK, we dedicate one day where we give back to our mothers, whether that be doing all the jobs she would normally do while showering with gifts and treats.

And at the Look Local, we would like to dedicate this poem to all the mothers in the area, which was written by poet Carol Mathews,

“A Mother loves right from the start. She holds her baby close to her heart. The bond that grows will never falter. Her love is so strong it will never alter.

A Mother gives never-ending love. She never feels that she has given enough.

For you she will always do her best. Constantly working, there’s no time to rest.

A Mother is there when things go wrong.

A hug and a kiss to help us along.

Always there when we need her near. Gently wipes our eyes when we shed a tear.

So, on this day shower your Mother with love.

Gifts and presents are nice but that is not enough.

Give your Mother a day to have some peace of mind.

Be gentle, be good, be helpful, be kind.”

So, this Sunday make sure you hold your mothers dearly and give them the best day of their lives, just as they have done for you 365 days a year, for however many years. Do as the Romans do and shower your mother with gifts and love to help them celebrate their greatest achievement…you!

School swaps the school run for a walk

Students at the local infant school has started to get involved in the WOW campaign which rewards students who either walk, scoot and or bike to school.

Stocksbridge infant school joined the award-winning campaign at the beginning of the school year. WOW is the brainchild of the charity ‘Living Streets’ which aims to get more children walking to school rather than being driven.

Since the start of the campaign, schools up and down the country have seen a 23 per cent increase in students choosing to walk to school. This has seen a decrease in congestion outside of school gates, and a reduction in air pollution, all while giving children daily exercise.

Chief Executive of Living Streets, Stephen Edwards said,

“Walking to school is an easy way for children to fit more activity into their day. More children walking to school means fewer cars around school gates- making them safer and cleaner places.

“WOW has increased walk-to-school rates in over 2,000 schools across the UK. It’s simple to run and pupils love to take part. Just a few minutes of a teacher’s day is needed to make a big difference.

“We can’t wait to see what a difference it makes to the health and happiness of more pupils this year.”

It’s easy for children to get involved in the campaign, all you have to do is download the WOW Travel Tracker app to log in to their daily and earn 11 different badges as a reward, all of which are designed by the pupils.

Mr. Baker who is the school's designated safeguarding lead spoke of his excitement about the program and said,

“We’re really excited about running WOW and walking to school this year. Our pupils are looking forward to collecting the badges and experiencing the natural world around them in the morning before class.

“We hope it will ease traffic outside the school gates and teach pupils vital road safety skills.”

Lucy smashes in late winner

Oughtibridge Ladies 3-2 Arnold

Oughtibridge won in the league for the first time in 3 months with a hard-fought 3-2 victory over fellow strugglers Arnold.

Libby Hallam opened the scoring with a bullet header but Bridge were quickly pegged back with a penalty from Tasha Shaw.

Frustration followed as Oughtibridge had no less than 3 goals chalked off for offside before the break, two of which were clearly onside and the other marginal, so tempers became frayed with the officials as the halftime whistle went.

Midway through the 2nd half Millie Kenyon fired home to settle the nerves at 2-1 as Oughtibridge dominated but then Shaw again found the back of the net to level things up. But, as the game went into injury time the evergreen Lucy Ridley showed her famous turn of pace to break from the halfway line and smash home a winner off the underside of the bar to claim a precious win. While Oughtibridge’s league form has been poor they have been progressing well in the cup and they now face a League Cup semi-final fixture against the same opponents this Sunday at Arnold in what is bound to be another close game. Church with last-gasp winner

Penistone Church 1-0 Barton

Penistone Church FC clinched a vital victory over Barton who have the best defensive record in the NCEL Premier League. The first half was limited to very small pockets of fine football and chances towards the goal. The best chance of the game came to the home side as Anthony Brown’s 30-yard strike just went wide of the post, as they went into the halftime period still level.

And like the first half, the teams were limited to very little in chances as both sides

were spraying the ball back and forth waiting for someone to make the first mistake. And in the second minute of added time, it was Church who stole the points, Jack Lenthall found Ryan Johnson who headed home from six yards out.

Penistone Church will travel to Maltby Main on the 11th of March kicking off at 3:00pm.

Chapeltown back to winning ways

Chapeltown RBL 3-1 Woodman Intake

Chapeltown RBL returned to winning ways beating last week's opponent Woodman Intake.

RBL took the lead when a Connor Tonge free kick was nodded down by Dave Millen for Sam Beard to apply the finish from close range.

Intake equalised with a tidy finish in the area on 19 min utes, but Legion reacted well and regained the lead a minute later with a Morgan Cowell thunderbolt crashing in off the crossbar.

Mitch Savage thought he had extended the lead but was ruled offside by the official.

Legion however did make it 3 when a fine ball from Har ley Wilson found Jay Carter, and a superb solo run ended with Carter firing into the bottom corner.

RBL defended well and a confident debut from Lewis Fox in goal kept any thoughts of a Woodman comeback at bay.

Last-minute try secures win for Stocksbridge who celebrate their anniversary Stocksbridge 15-3 Leeds Mods

Match report by James Fletcher

It was an anniversary to remember for Globe Holidays sponsored Stocksbridge with this win over Leeds, Sam Whittaker put the icing on the anniversary cake with a last-minute try which secured the win.

The home side dominated proceedings in the opening 10 minutes of the game, pinning Leeds in their own half. Despite Stockbridge’s dominationa poor pass was intercepted by Leeds’s no.18 who will remain nameless out of respect, as he ran clean through and looked destined to score the opening try but lost his footing at the worst possible time as he slumped to the ground and punched it in the process in frustration.

But it was the hosts who opened the scoring on the 18th minute a lovely passage of play allowed Jack Pearson to force his way through the backline with sheer force to score the only try of the first half. Things got better and better for Stocksbridge as they chose to take the kick which increased their lead to 10.

Both sides struggled to get any kind of flow together with a referee who saw infringements at every turn of the ball. This suited Stocksbridge who continued to defend well, holding what seemed like an unbreakable backline.

Leeds were offered a reprieve at the end of the first half when they were awarded a penalty which they converted, bringing the game down to within one try.

The second half saw Leeds pushed for the try to equal the game, but Stocksbridge held firm throughout and never lost concentration and within the last minute of the game the win was sealed, Stocksbridge once again forced their through Leeds’s backline to slam down the final try by Sam Whitaker, and in the final moment of the game as Stocksbridge ran out deserved winners with the final score 15-3, in what was a dull game.

Ella’s fine strike wins the day

SteelS derailed

Stocksbridge Park Steels were knocked off track after losing a 2-0 lead to fall to a 3-2 defeat against Shildon.

Steels got off to the best possible start. Ross Goodwin almost made it two in two when his save was palmed onto the bar. It rebounded out to Lewis Macaskill though who was able to wrap his foot around it and volley home to give Stocksbridge the lead after just a few minutes.

Chapeltown Hockey Club Ladies

1s continued their winning form against Horncastle 1s to move up a place in YNE Peak & Wold Women's Division 1.

Going into an early lead with a fine strike from Player of the Match Ella Atkins the Ladies continued to press and went 2-0 up with a goal from in-form Matilda Davidson.

The score remained the same until the game's last hit, which produced a goal for the visitors from Lincolnshire. Final score 2-1 win.

The Men's 1st team were hoping to bounce back against Leeds 5s who they beat earlier in the season. The Chapeltown side found themselves 2-0 down though after two breakaway goals from the Leeds side.

The last strike of the half saw Danny Palmer score from a pen-

alty corner for Chapeltown to make it 2-1 going into the break.

As Chapeltown pressed for an equaliser the Leeds side once again caught them on the break to make it 3-1.

A second for the Maroon Platoon from Viv Balachandar proved to be only a consolation as the score finished 3-2 to Leeds.

The Mens 2nds travelled up to Wakefield to take on Slazengers. An excellent first-half performance saw them 4 goals up with Man of the Match Craig Burgan (2), Rob Ramsay and Matt Oxby finding the back of the net.

The Chapeltown side didn't add to the tally in the second half with the score finishing a 4-0 win.

The Ladies 2s put in a good show but were on the wrong end of a 3-0 defeat to Grasshoppers 1s in the away game at Spinkhill.

Shildon showed early on that their set pieces were going to be a danger. A corner was whipped in and Ben Townsend had to be alive to make the save. Alexander White tried to knock it in from close range but Stocksbridge were able to do enough to clear it.

Stocksbridge were able to take advantage of Shildon not taking their chances. From their own corner, Mitch Langton forced a good save from Harrison Bond. The ball fell kindly to Elliot Murray who was able to tap in from close range and the Steels seemed to be on their way to victory.

Shildon though were able to fire back before the end of the first half. Again, it was from a corner. Billy Greulich-Smith connected with the header but Townsend was able to make the save. However this time, Stocksbridge didn’t react quickly enough and Greulich-Smith got onto the ball again and fired home

Shildon 3-2 Steels

to halve the deficit before the break.

In the second half with the momentum behind them, Shildon were looking like the stronger side. While Stocksbridge did have some chances at the other end, it was the Railwaymen who got the next goal which would change the shape of the game entirely. Initially, it seemed like Stocksbridge got a letoff as Aiden Heywood air-kicked a potential volley but that allowed the ball to fall to Joe Posthill, who was then able to get it past Townsend.

With the game finely poised, both teams pressed to get the winner which would provide crucial to their end-of-the-season hopes. It really could have been either side who got the win but in the end, it was Shildon who would be celebrating. It was another corner and Greulich-Smith was left unmarked to head in, sending the away fans home miserable.

RALLYING CRY

Stocksbridge Park Steels chairman Graham Furness is asking supporters to come and get behind the team this Saturday when they take on fellow play off hopefuls Dunston FC at Bracken Moor.

Steels have been in excellent form this season losing only one league game from October to the beginning of February, that form saw them reach fourth place in the division a position they still hold, results haven't been as consistent recently but now the season is getting

closer to the finish line it is important that they see the job through and secure a top five finish.

Saturdays opponents Dunston are also pushing for a play off place and are three points behind the Steels ,they will also be out for revenge after Steels beat them in the first game of the season.

Graham stated that this is the first Saturday for a while our fixture hasn't clashed with Sheffield Wednesday so hopefully we can attract some of their supporters as well as people from the Town and surrounding areas ,the club are doing their best to give the Town a team they can be proud of it would be great if they came and showed their support.

Saturday 11 March: Stocksbridge Park Steels FC v Dunston FC at Bracken Moor 3pm KO.
