Labour needed to gain 3 seats to take overall control of the Council, but they have failed to do this. News also surfaced, before election results were announced, that Labour was forcing the leader of Sheffield Council Terry Fox to step down following a series of failures including the street tree scandal and the Fargate shipping containers fiasco.

‘SINGLE’
Sheffield-based singer/songwriter Holly Littlewood (18) releases single to support mental health charity.
Sheffield born and bred singer songwriter Holly Littlewood (18) releases her second single, entitled "Media" on all streaming platforms on 15th May 2023. The song is an uplifting pop-rock song about the media - in particular social media - and the effect that it can have on people's self-image, anxiety and mental health. It balances with positive messages and affirmations that "it's okay not to be okay."
The release date of 15th May coincides with the start of Mental Health Awareness week and the song is being endorsed by The Mental Health Foundation who
run the event. A charity justgiving page has been set up by Holly to raise funds for the charity. Laura Mayes of The Mental Health Foundation said: "It's wonderful to hear about Holly's song and that she'd like to use it to raise funds and awareness for mental health, throughout Mental Health Awareness Week. The money raised will help us to deliver vital research and develop solutions to improve prevention and treatment for the 1 in 6 people affected by mental health problems every week."
Holly, who lives in Stocksbridge and studies Music Performance at The Sheffield College said: "Given the subject matter of the song, it felt right to team up with The Mental Health Foundation to try and raise some funds to support peo-
ple who struggle with their selfimage, anxiety and mental health in general. I'm under no illusions and know that even if I donated all of my royalties to the charity, they wouldn't receive much. Therefore, I decided to set up a just giving page so that people who connect with the song can show their support that way."
Media, by Holly Littlewood, will be available to stream on all major platforms from 15th May. You can donate to the just giving page via her instagram: @hollylittlewoodmusic

Sheffield United’s promotion parade on Thursday
The Blades will celebrate with the city on Thursday 11 May.
After their 2 – 0 win against West Brom gained them automatic promotion, Sheffield United will be celebrating with the city with a victory parade on Thursday 11 May between 5:30pm-8pm.
The open top bus, which will take the team’s players and coaching staff through the streets of Sheffield, will leave Bramall Lane stadium at 5.30pm, to arrive at the Sheffield Town Hall for around 6.30pm.
With the route closed to traffic, the open top bus will travel at walking pace to allow Sheffield United to greet people along the route.
Blades supporters can join in the celebrations outside the Town Hall in a traffic free fanzone, where the team will be presented to share their success and mark the occasion with loyal fans. After the parade, the team will attend a civic reception at the Town Hall.
Lord Mayor, Sioned-Mair Richards said: “Congratulations to Sheffield United on their promotion. The victory parade is a fantastic opportunity for the team and fans to come together to celebrate the team’s success and we will be honoured to host the Blades at the Town Hall.
“I’d like to remind fans to respect the city, each other and security staff if they’re coming into the city centre to watch the victory parade.”
Honoured ladies attended the Kings Garden Party
By James Fletcher
Award-winning Lollipop Lady and Teaching Assistant represented Deepcar and Oughtibridge at the Buckingham Palace Garden Party. Jaqueline Higginbottom, 79, has been a lollipop lady for five decades and was awarded the British Empire Award by the current King, who celebrated his Coronation with a garden party three days before the big day. Jackie was one of many who was invited to attend the Garden Party at Buckingham Palace.
She wasn’t the only one from our community, Mrs Tanya Lawton who works at Oughtibridge Primary school as a Teaching Assistant was also invited to attend after being nominated for her dedication to teaching.
Her nomination came from one of the school’s governors who noticed her caring, compassionate work with children in her care, especially with the ones who have had challenges in their life.
They were joined by other award winners, who have shown dedica-

tion and helped within their community going above and beyond from all corners of the British Isles. Since the event, Oughtibridge School has shown their own appreciation for all of her hard work by changing her name on her classroom door which now reads ‘Lady Lawton’.
These two ladies have been exceptional ambassadors for our small community, and they deserve any and all accolades that come their way.
Coronation Lunch
The first images of the new Full Monty TV series have been released ahead of its premiere later this year.
The 1997 movie followed a group of Sheffield steelworkers who formed a strip act after falling on hard times.
Filmed in and around Sheffield the series will feature original cast members Robert Carlyle, Mark Addy, Tom Wilkinson, Hugo Speer, Paul Barber and Steve Huison as well as the original screenwriter Simon Beaufoy.
The show will air on Disney+ in June.
According to Disney the series will follow the same group as “as they navigate the post-industrial city of Sheffield, and society’s crumbling healthcare, education, and employment sectors”.
Beaufoy said: “It has been one of the great joys of my writing career to reunite this eccentric, irrepressible family of Sheffield
men and women and see how 25 years, seven prime ministers, and 100 broken political promises have affected their lives.”
Filming crews were spotted in Sheffield in May 2022, with filming taking place at a house and Gleadless Valley Church.
As well as catching up with the original characters, a host of news faces will feature including Talitha Wing who will play Robert Carlyle’s character Gaz’s teenage daughter, Destiny Schofield.
Other actors set to appear are Sheffield-born Paul Clayton, Lesley Sharp, Miles Jupp, Sophie Stanton and Phillip Rhys Chaudhary.
Co-writer Alice Nutter said: “Entering the Monty world, where community, friends and family step in when the state has so abysmally failed, has been a great personal reminder of what is good about the world we live in. The series has been a pleasure and a privilege to write on.”

Leadership runs in the family
Leadership truly runs in the family for Stocksbridge High School student, Madison Couldwell.
As a Y11 student, Madison has already accomplished so much and is now about to take her GCSE exams. She is a long-standing member of the school council and has been one of the head students for the past year. In this role, she represents the school in the community, speaks at public events, and acts as a positive role model and leader to her fellow students.
Madison's leadership skills and her passion for making a difference in her school community are not surprising, given that she comes from a long line of head students. Her Grandfather, Richard Couldwell, was also a head boy during his time at Stocksbridge High School and had received the Headmaster's prize. The family still has the press clippings to prove it. When Madison applied for the position, she already knew about her grandfather's legacy, and she expressed how proud and pleased he was at her carrying on the family tradition. Recently, Madison and Richard discovered an astonishing fact about their family history. Richard's Father and Madison's Great-Grandfather, Arthur, was also a leading student at Bolstertone School before Stocksbridge High
School opened. The family even found a book awarded to Arthur Couldwell in 1927 for being 'top boy' with an inscription. This book has now become a treasured possession of the Couldwell family, and maybe, one day, it will be passed onto the next generation of head students.
Stocksbridge High School's headteacher, Andy Ireland, expressed his admiration for Madison's accomplishments and her family's legacy. He said that the school is rooted in the community and has had the privilege of educating generations of local families. He wished Madison and all Y11s about to take their exams the best of luck and success in their future endeavors.
Madison Couldwell's family legacy is an inspiring reminder of the impact that leadership and positive role models can have on individuals, families, and communities. As Madison moves on to the next chapter of her life, she can be proud of her accomplishments and the legacy she continues to carry on for her family.

Man sentenced for murder of Sheffield neighbour.
A Sheffield man has today (Tuesday 9 May) been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of his neighbour.
Andrew Hague, aged 31, appeared at Sheffield Crown Court, where he received a life sentence and told he will serve a minimum term of 17 years. The judge has recommended this be served in a medical facility, with a decision yet to be made.
Hague pleaded guilty to the murder of his neighbour, 50-year-old Simon Wilkinson, at a hearing earlier this year. He admitted violently assaulting Mr Wilkinson in the Fox Hill Road area of Sheffield last August, causing significant and ultimately fatal injuries.
Speaking after the sentencing, Detective In-
spector John Fitzgibbons said: “No sentence passed can ease the grief and pain that Mr Wilkinson’s family and friends have faced daily since he was murdered, but I hope that with the conclusion of our investigation and legal proceedings today they feel that they now have some justice for their loved one. My thoughts are with them again today after what will have been another difficult day.
“Hague admitted murder and accepted responsibility for his senseless and brutal actions, which has devastated those who knew and loved Mr Wilkinson.”
Mr Wilkinson’s family have said they do not wish to speak at this time and we ask that their privacy is respected as this difficult time.

Man jailed for life for Murdering neighbour Charity campaign asks people to dig deep to send families from Yorkshire on holiday
A newly launched campaign by the charity, Family Holiday Charity, is asking people to dig deep and donate money to give vulnerable families from Yorkshire the opportunity to experience a much-needed holiday this year.
The charity is hoping to raise £20,000 so that it can help send 33 families from the Yorkshire region on holiday this summer – some for the first time.
Recent research has shown that there are many barriers to why people haven’t been on a holiday before and includes mental health issues, financial constraints such as having many dependents, or emotional restrictions such as caring for a parent or sibling.
Kat Lee, CEO of Family Holiday Charity is appealing to people to help, asking supporters to pledge £10 to help
them reach their fundraising target.
She said: “If we can get 2,000 people to donate just £10 then we will be able to meet our goal of everyone being able to experience the benefits of spending time with loved ones away from their home environment. The more funds the charity has the more chance it has to showcase the tourism experience to families first hand and motivate and inspire them to include travel in their lives in the future. You can make a big difference to other families in Yorkshire to get away, spend time with each other, and transform the lives of families facing tough times.”
It costs the charity around £600 to give a whole family their first tourism experience and last year it helped 1,854 families to be able to get away - 237 of those families were from Yorkshire.
Mum of three, Charlie from West Yorkshire was one of the families who was supported by the charity to go on holiday last year to Scarborough, along with her 10year-old son, Jason, sevenyear-old daughter, Katie, and one-year-old son, Joshua. The family used to visit Scarborough with their Grandma but since her caring duties for their grandad have increased, they hadn’t been back.
She said: “Before the holiday I was a bit nervous as this was the first time I had travelled on my own with three children and luggage but the kids were so well behaved, I was filled with pride. Jason was also nervous before the holiday as he has Branchio Oculo Facial Syndrome which affects how he looks and can make him nervous of being around children who don’t know him. It was brilliant though and we loved visiting Scarborough.
“We spent time on the beach and took the bus to Peas holm Park where we went out on the lake on peddle boats. Katie’s favourite parts were swimming and going to the arcades. The break meant so much to use and the children are more relaxed. We live in a two-bedroom flat which is too small, but we can’t afford to move out and it can get quite claustrophobic at times Since we returned home I have noticed that the children are less argumentative and I really feel this is partly down to the special time we all had together on holiday! It’s been a stressful few years for every one and especially Jason and we needed to get away as a family and are so grateful for everyone involved in making it happen.”

Sheffield residents are being encouraged to support a local fundraising event to raise money for the MS Society UK. The event, organised by a city family, is set to take place on Saturday 15th July at the Niagara Sports and Social Club.
The fundraising day has been planned in support of 22-yearold Lottie, who was recently diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. The family have organised an exciting lineup of entertainment for the day, including the Sheffield Hallam Brass Band, local belly dancing troops, singers and bands. Other activities include fairground games, a bouncy castle and stalls from various local businesses.
In addition to the entertainment, there will also be a range of re-
freshments available, as well as a DJ, raffle, tombola and auction. A fire engine will also be attending the event, giving members of the public the chance to meet and greet local fire officers. The family, who are keen to raise awareness of MS and support the MS Society UK, have created professional flyers and set up Facebook and Just Giving pages to promote the event. They hope to generate as much support as possible to help those affected by the disease.
With something for everyone, the event promises to be a funfilled day out. The family are urging people of all ages to come along and show their support for a great cause.

Drones, Stolen Vehicles and AntiTank Shells
Stocksbridge & Stannington NPT:
Its been a busy couple of weeks for the team who have been dealing with a vast array of incidents.
Last week one of my officers became a fully fledged drone pilot after passing his exams and flying course, and with the help of some funding from the Sheffield Community Safety Partnership Fund we have now taken possession of our very own Drone for use in a wide range of Policing purposes. We have only had the drone for just under two weeks and already it has been deployed nine times.
Last week it was used to track and illegal off road bike causing issues within a park in Stocksbridge and from the footage we have now identified the nominals riding the bike, who should be expecting a visit from my team very shortly.
Further to this the drone has been used to assist with monitoring protestors within the city and to search for high risk missing people, as well as a rather unusual request.
Earlier this week a concerned member of the public contacted the Police to say he had located what looked like an un-exploded shell on the moors above Langsett Reservoir, whilst he was out walking. Now although this area was used many years ago as a tank training area and the majority of shells located are perfectly safe, we simply could not take the risk. As such the team was deployed by our Force Incident Manager to locate and assess the shell and to guide bomb disposal officers from the military into the scene.
We met up with the concerned member of the public at Langsett Barn and had to walk almost 5 miles onto the moors in order to locate the shell. The drone was carried along with us and as we got closer to the area it was deployed to assist with pin pointing the shell. When we approached it had obviously been there for some time as it had begun to rust, but as I'm no expert in anti-tank shells we had to call in MOD to assist us in ascertaining if it was safe. Luckily on this occasion it was perfectly safe, but we still recovered it from the moors, making a further 5 mile trek with a heavy lump of metal.
Whilst on patrol our PCSO colleagues were directed towards a suspicious Land Rover Range Rover which appeared to have been dumped. When they arrived on scene it was quickly established that the vehicle was someone's pride and joy that had been stolen by some unscrupulous criminals. The vehicle was recovered and returned to a grateful owner.
And finally whilst covering the Bank Holiday an officer from the team was out patrolling in Stocksbridge heading towards the Spar on Pot House Lane when ahead he spied a youth on an off road 125cc motorbike.
The youth was stopped, talking to some younger children, who were sat on the bike, but as Police approached he quickly got them off the bike and jumped on it in an attempt to ride off. Unfortunately for him he wasn't quick enough and couldn't kick start the bike and so when the officer jumped out of the Police vehicle he dropped the bike and gave it legs. As the officer was on his own, and he did not want the suspect running round the block and jumping back on the bike, he had no choice but to let him go in order to recover the vehicle.
As well as the bike the youth also left his newly purchased bottle of Coca Cola on the bike and so enquiries are ongoing with the Spar and the CCTV to identify the youth. The bike was recovered for an examination to ascertain if it was stolen or simply a 'pool' bike.
If anyone is, or knows who the owner of the bike is, and the owner wants their bike back then please contact the Police on 101 quoting incident number 482 01/05/2023 so officers can discuss who was riding it and why it was on the highway.
Sgt Ross MASTERS, Stocksbridge and Stannington Wards, Sheffield Northwest Neighbourhood Team.
Labour maladministration
Recent comments in The Star by Cllr Price (24th April) appear to indicate that Sheffield Labour believe they can continue to blag their way out of difficult situations with the usual misrepresentations and spin. That is out of step with the policies that Sheffield City Council (SCC) have formally adopted since the Forestry Commission’s “illegal felling assessment” of the Streets Ahead highway treefelling programme began in April 2018 - three weeks before Cllr Bryan Lodge resigned his position as the Cabinet Member responsible. The possibility of criminal charges loomed.
Cllr Fox was equally responsible, having held the same Cabinet position during 2015 & 2016. At that time, Save Our Roadside Trees (SORT) - the tree group that established the city-wide tree campaign – had over 15,000 supporters. Both men – advised by Cllr Downing - chose to ignore a 140 page letter from SORT that SCC had distributed to every Cllr in the city. Detailing wrongs and highlighting good practice, current research and statutory duties, as well as existing policy commitments (local, national & international), and with 238 pages of appendices, the document was more substantial than Sir Lowcock’s recently published Sheffield Street Trees Inquiry report. It detailed the hopes, desires and expectations of Sheffield’s tree campaigners. The letter is online, accessible via links at Professor Ian Rotherham’s blog (March 2022 section); it prompted Cllr Fox to present and wilfully deceive citizens with a fake document that he wrongly asserted had, until then, been a 'commercially sensitive' contract document. Quote: “Amey had the five-year tree management strategy within their confidential contract.” In April 2016, it misled a High Court Judge. It wasn’t until July 2018 that SCC shared the genuine ‘strategy’ documents; the original version detailed felling quotas for each part of the city. Less than two pages in length, the actual contract document used, made public in May 2018, made no mention of the ‘6 Ds’ criteria that Cllrs Fox & Lodge had asserted were used to decide which trees to fell, nor did it make any mention of the 25 ‘engineering solutions’ that they had asserted were always considered before deciding whether or not a street tree could be retained, to ensure that “felling is always a last resort”, as they put it.
By February 2017, Save Our Roadside Trees campaigners (SORT) had spent TWENTY MONTHS trying to persuade SCC & Amey to honour their existing policy & contractual commitments to use alternative surfacing products, methods and techniques, as an alternative to using asphalt or felling when undertaking resurfacing on roads with mature street trees. On the 28/12/2015,
The Star reported that Cllr Fox had informed that Flexi®-Pave had been used on 143 occasions to retain street trees. On 1/2/2017, Cllr Lodge informed the product had not been used, after previously asserting (on 7/12/2016) that it had, but promised to contact & meet the supplier, which he never did.
On 4th October 2017 the Information Commissioner’s Office issued a Decision Notice (Reference: FS50637180), having spent 2,404 hours investigating Cllr Fox’s misleading assertion, at HIS request. It concluded that Flexi®-Pave had not been used. Illegal felling could have been avoided had it been used. Finally, in April 2021, the SCC interim Head of Highway Maintenance announced that the product would be used for the Streets Ahead project.
The planting of trees beyond highways by Sheffield City Council is not the result of prudent resource management or decision-making by city Councillors. In fact, they fired most of those employed to care for the city’s urban forest. Rather, planting is a result of grants obtained by hugely under-resourced Officers and significant charitable contributions from the Woodland Trust, Trees For Cities, STAG and the Wildlife Trust, supplemented by volunteers –nothing to do with any political party!
Those Councillors responsible for the street tree debacle should be permanently barred from occupying a position of power or responsibility.

Road safety concerns
Dear Stocksbridge Council, Miriam Cates and Julie Grocutt.
I am contacting you on behalf of very concerned parents in the Deepcar area attending Royd infant school on Carr road and St John's primary school on St Margaret's Road.
The amount of congestion and traffic surrounding both school's has been a great concern for some time now, but ,with the start of a huge housing development underway on Hollins Busk we have been astounded by the daily occurance of large vehicles making their way up and down Carr road every day especially during busy times for children going to and leaving school.
Just today a lorry dumper truck mounted the curb due to his impatience to give way to oncoming traffic at peak school run time. The lorry mounted the curb adjacent to the school,i pulled my children onto the grass verge away from this... but what would have happened if a child was not able to move away quickly?
Children walk up this area of Carr road to gain access into the school premises, walking to school should be encouraged and we should feel safe to do so. The speed limit is 30mph,there is no means to flag to drivers they need to reduce their speed and drive with careful consideration. Can you tell me why this is?
As a parent and a nurse that deals with patients who sustain injuries from road traffic collisions it concerns me that a very serious incident is going to occur if action is not taken. The school have told me they have raised their concerns before with no avail.
The school have managed the danger of this road to the best of their ability; where possible having a member of staff stand at the school entrance and observe for children near the road but I feel this isn't enough now. Children do not have a concept of vehicle speed nor or they road safe under the age of 11. There needs to be urgent action made by our local council and highway to protect our children. I am astounded there are no visible warnings to drivers to reduce their speed! I plead with you that metal railings can be installed outside the school to prevent dangerous driving and safeguard our children. On school excursions children stand with teaching staff in preparation to cross the road safely, again surely roadside railings will give further protection?
Once the housing development is completed on Hollins Busk the problem will not disappear, i feel it will continue to get progresively worse. We will no doubt continue to have more traffic passing through Carr road for new residents commuting and more children walking to school. As you will be aware there is a vast property development in the valley of Deepcar -Bloor homes are underway developing a huge estate, again, this will create more traffic to and from the school. With such developments occuring surely there is a duty of care to ensure surrounding areas are safe and can cope with the increased traffic load? We need a long term solution! Once the builders have gone there will be more traffic than ever for the new home owners, this problem will not disappear.
I would love for you to visit the area of concern and for you to support your local constituents in this very concerning matter. We need your help please and we need it now!
I look forward to hearing back from you.
Kind regards
Thank You
Sustainability & liability
Sheffield Labour spent four years forcibly implementing a city-wide programme of illegal – criminal – felling, actively and constantly publicising all the negative things that they can think of about trees, to justify their wrongful acts and omissions and gain support.
Fortunately, following commencement of the Forestry Commission’s ‘illegal felling assessment’ of the Streets Ahead highway tree-felling programme, in April 2018 (three weeks before Cllr Bryan Lodge resigned his position as the Cabinet Member responsible), Sheffield City Council (SCC) changed tack and has formally adopted its first tree strategies. These are used to guide and inform policy and decisions that affect trees, to help ensure that acts and omissions are, balanced, proportionate, adequate, auditable, defendable, and not unduly influenced by transitory or exaggerated opinions, whether formed by the media or vested interests. The strategies are to be reviewed and revised to accommodate changes and incorporate current good practice guidance and recommendations. This is the most appropriate way to help ensure the prudent, rational stewardship and use of public resources, and to safeguard against unnecessary, avoidable, reasonably foreseeable damage, loss and environmental degradation.
Trees – particularly large ones - improve quality of the built environment: they obscure eyesores; provide shelter from extreme weather; slow the flow of rainwater and reduce surface-water runoff; reduce heat reflectance from hard surfaces and parked cars. They also reduce exposure – of people and infrastructure – to extreme temperatures, and protect verges, footways and pedestrians from vehicles. Our pleasure in enjoyment of their beauty, and in the range of associated wildlife, enhances our health and wellbeing and reduces the NHS burden. The human mortality rate and respiratory diseases are reduced, as crowns filter harmful pollutants from the air we breathe. The area of Sheffield’s canopy cover, and range of valuable ecosystem services that it affords to neighbourhoods and communities has been assessed and monetary values are now known. This should aid balanced risk assessment, cost:benefit analyses and resource allocation decisions.
In 2008, the Department for Communities and Local Government published a report (Trees in Towns II) that advised:
“Those LAs that have not got an existing tree strategy and are not in the process of developing one, need to make this an IMMEDIATE priority…”
Competent local authorities adopt a tree strategy to help ensure that tree populations within the urban forest (the collective tree cover of the city) are managed sustainably, as defined by The UK Forestry Standard. On 1/12/2022, the Tree Council published ‘The Trees and Woodland Strategy (TAWS) Toolkit’: new national guidance for local authorities and their stakeholders to develop and deliver a local tree strategy.
Guidance from the National Tree Safety Group, published by the Forestry Commission, in 2011, states:
“The NTSG position statement argues that IT IS REASONABLE TO INCLUDE SOCIETAL VALUE AND BENEFIT IN THE CALCULATION OF WHAT IS REASONABLE where a landowner or manager is acting in the public interest.”
Mrs Daly
I would like to thank all residents in the Stocksbridge & Upper Don ward who went out to vote on 4th May in the local elections. I am delighted to have been reelected as your local councillor.
I shall continue to work promoting & supporting our local volunteers and community organisations who play a valuable role in our community. I am here to assist residents when required & be your voice in the Town Hall.
I can be contacted on 07825195212 or julie.grocutt@ councilllor.sheffield.gov.uk and along with Councillor Janet Ridler hold a surgery in the Stocksbridge Library on the first Saturday of each month 10—11am, please call in for help, advice or just a chat.
Cllr Julie Grocutt
“…a reasonable strategy, articulating the benefits of trees, should, in the view of the NTSG, carry as much weight in PROTECTING THE TREE OWNER AGAINST LITIGATION following an incident as any factory’s reasonable risk management policy.”
To get a tree strategy for Sheffield took years of constant campaigning and struggle for one, by Sheffield’s tree campaigners, and a Forestry Commission threat of legal action against SCC.

Wooden sculpture in Oxley Park
I've been walking through Oxley Park since I was a toddler and have always loved it, enjoying the beauty of the changing seasons and the peace it offers. Tragically, the once lovely view from the top of the path has been ruined by this ugly, orange, revolting sculpture. Obviously, lots of people think it's absolutely wonderful so I am out of step but I could never describe it as "beautiful" or a "magnificent creation". Such praise is deserved only by the woodland it has spoiled. What a shame.

The photographs in the book are a testament to Wright's talent as a photographer, and his love for the beauty that lies in looking, and looking carefully. The images showcase the natural beauty of Naples, including its sun-kissed beaches, the Gulf of Naples, and the crystal-clear waters of the bay. Wright's work also captures the bustling energy of the city, from the industrial port to the leafy top of Ca-
podimonte. He documents the joy unleashed by the youngsters diving in the waters, as well as the quiet sanctuaries nestled in the oldest streets of Napoli.
The City of the Sun is the first of three publications by Wright and Goulder, a culmination of a lifetime of collaboration that began when they met at punk gigs as teenagers, playing and touring in bands together and producing zines. Everything they do still has that DIY spirit at the forefront.
The book will be published by New Dimension, whose publisher hails from Stocksbridge. In addition, Wright's work in The City of the Sun has been shortlisted for the Photo London x Nikon Emerging Photographer Award 2023. The book and
an exhibition of Wright's work will be featured at Photo London 2023, hosted by New Dimension.
This exciting news is a testament to Wright's skill as a photographer and the beauty of Naples that he has captured in his work. It is a great accomplishment for a Sheffielder (Stannington) to have his work recognised on a national level and showcased at such a prestigious event. Wright's book is sure to be a visual treat for anyone who loves photography, travel and the beauty of the world.
will be a key part of reducing isolation and improving wellbeing.
The service is rooted in the NHS endorsed ‘Five Ways to Wellbeing’ concept, with groups providing opportunities to connect through shared experiences, give back to others through peer support, and learn new skills. Carers of people with a learning disability or autism and their loved ones in Sheffield will be able to access the service from July 2023, with a predicted 450 people being supported over the 3-year funding period.
Kelly Daubney, Senior Manager of Carers Projects at Sheffield Mencap and Gateway, explains:
“Caring for a loved one with a learning disability or autism is a life-long commitment and can be incredibly challenging. Recent consultations
have sadly revealed the extent of the isolation, exhaustion and burnout suffered by carers after the additional pressures of the Covid-19 pandemic. This new service will support carers to take some valuable time for themselves, in a safe environment alongside people who have walked in their shoes.
We are overjoyed to have been successful in this bid and want to extend our thanks to everyone who plays the National Lottery, because without you, we couldn’t deliver this valuable work. This funding will allow Sheffield Mencap and Gateway to engage some of the most isolated, hidden carers in the city and effect positive change in communities across Sheffield”.
For more information about this project, please contact: carersprojects@sheffieldmencap.org.uk.

Ecclesfield Red Rose U14s won the Sheffield & District Junior Football League under 14 Vase at St George's Park, Westfield on Sunday 30th April 2023.
The day felt like a 'proper' cup final, for the Red Rose team with a coach taking the players to the match so they'd arrive in style. Extra training had taken place since the semi finals at Firth Park School astro pitch, which the team had worked hard to en-
sure they were match fit and ready for the challenge.
Ecclesfield Red Rose went in as the underdogs against Wisewood who are currently two leagues above and after a nervy first half, then 20 minutes into the second half, Jimmy Duggan slotted home the only goal of the game. The rest of the game Ecclesfield closed ranks to hold onto a 1-0 victory with a close goal line clearance to-
wards the end preserving Rose's slender lead.
Referees picked their Player of the Match which went to an outstanding Ashton Slack, commenting that all players showed sportsmanship and their conduct was excellent throughout. Wisewood team were awarded their runner up medals to a fabulous applause from both teams supporters.

World Snooker ChampionShip Could leave the Steel City
By James Fletcher
Sheffield is set to face stiff opposition from Qatar and China who look to take the Snooker World Championship away from Sheffield.
Sheffield’s current deal is due to end in 2027 and Qatar has already made enquiries about the possibility of hosting the event.
The Crucible Theatre has hosted this event since 1977, the 980-capacity venue may be small and has had people scrambling for tickets over the years. But that is part of its charm, being an intimate venue that fans and players adore.
Former World Snooker Chairperson, Barry Hearn issues a warning to Sheffield
to make some improvements or risk losing the event to Qatar.
It’s not just Qatar that wants to host this event, China has been trying to commandeer the tournament for many years now and even built a replica of the famous Crucible Theatre to help their cause in 2014.
China already plays host to the World Open Snooker Championships and wants to continue its great relationship with the sport by hosting the most prestigious event in Snooker.
But there are plans in place to keep the event from leaving Sheffield and going elsewhere. The new proposed venue ‘The Billiardrome’ is a 3,000-capacity arena, with
a possible 300-bed hotel and a snooker museum adjacent. And when it's not hosting a snooker event the space can be converted into a 1,500seated conference room.
This proposed new venue could see snooker stay in the steel city for another three decades.
The Sheffield Council’s exec utive director of city futures, Kate Martin told the York shire Post:
“We are proud of our snook er heritage, what it means culturally to the city, and the economic benefits it brings, and we look forward to hosting many more success ful World Snooker Cham pionships in many years to come.”
Steels partner with academy
The North of England Football Academy (NEFA) are delighted to announce that they have reached an agreement with Stocksbridge Park Steels FC to become the exclusive provider of the Steels Football and Education programme.
NEFA will work alongside and incorporate Stocksbridge Under 18s and the partnership means that SPS with NEFA will be represented in the National Youth League Alliance, the 4th highest tier of youth football for Under 19s. Head of Academy at NEFA Ben Nicholson stated “We are delighted to be working with the biggest non-league club in the region to achieve our goal of creating footballing futures.
Stocksbridge have a great tradition of promoting and developing young local talent.
With NEFA having so many of our players representing clubs across the nonleague pyramid this season, working with Stocksbridge will allow us to continue
to achieve this under a one club ambition of developing players for Stocksbridge’s first team and beyond.”
The partnership will continue to provide NEFA learners the full opportunity to experience playing in senior men’s football.
With many NEFA learners playing at Step 8 and above representing NEFA Seniors and other local non-league clubs.
The Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves will be a great platform for NEFA learners to develop and work their way up the pyramid, hopefully into the first team and beyond.
Head of Recruitment at NEFA Josh Wain stated “I am delighted we were able sign this partnership. Our objective is to provide players with a clear pathway into Non-League Football whilst studying within a Full-Time environment. Having been involved at the club as a player, I have seen first-hand the desire to progress youth through the system, which is why the talks began in form-
ing an alliance to offer a fantastic opportunity to aspiring footballers of the 23/24 season onwards.
A significant part of what we deliver is focused on forging a career within the game, using our strapline ‘Play or Stay in the Game’. It’s a fantastic opportunity for players / students interested in developing their education, whilst being able to commit to progressing in football. Learning the insights by studying our BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sports Coaching and Development, which will then be applied with course tasks, coaching opportunities, and clear exit routes into the game.
We want to thank Graham, Roger for all their hard work in finalising this opportunity, it’s one we’re all looking forward to beginning”.

SteelS celebrate SeaSon
It was a night of celebration and recognition as the Stocksbridge Park Steels first team presentation night made its triumphant return after a long absence. The event was attended by an enthusiastic crowd of club officials, first-team players, and invited guests, all eager to celebrate the team's successes and look forward to the upcoming season.
The evening began with a period of socialising and delicious food, setting the perfect tone for what was to come. The chairman then took the stage, delivering an inspiring speech about his vision for the club and the exciting plans he had for its future. The manager followed suit, outlining his strategies for success in the upcoming season and expressing his desire
to retain every player for the 2023/24 season.
Next up were the awards, which were hotly anticipated by all in attendance. Despite missing the event due to being on holiday, Alex O'Connor was awarded the goal of the season. Fans Player of the Year went to Tomas Poole, while Jack Tinker was named Young Player of the Year. Kurtis Turner was awarded the Manager's Player of the Year, and Charlie Oglesby took home the Player's Player of the Year award, a testament to his popularity and talent within the team.
The evening was made even more special by the presentation of a special award to Michael Grimmer, who has dedicated decades of his life to serving as the club's secretary. Grimmer was recogn-
ised for his outstanding contributions to the team and thanked for his invaluable service. While retiring from his role as secretary, Grimmer will continue to serve as head groundsman, ensuring the team has the best playing surface possible.
Overall, the Stocksbridge Park Steels first team presentation night was a resounding success, celebrating the team's successes and recognising the hard work and dedication of everyone involved in the club. With the exciting plans outlined for the future, it's clear that the team is destined for even greater success in the years to come.
