Woman named, man charged after body found in property

A man has appeared in court charged with murdering a woman found dead at a house in Sheffield.

Mark Nicholls, 43, is accused of killing Emily Sanderson, 48, whose body was found on 30 May in Crofton Avenue, Hillsborough.

Mr Nicholls, of Crofton Avenue, appeared at Sheffield Magistrates' Court on Monday.

He was remanded in custody ahead of his next appearance on Wednesday at Sheffield Crown Court.

Ms Sanderson's body was found five days after she was reported missing on 25 May. She had not been seen since 19 May.

Mr Nicholls spoke only to confirm his name, age and address as friends and

relatives of Ms Sanderson watched from the public gallery.

A 40-year-old woman arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender last week has been bailed pending further enquiries.

Emily’s body was discovered inside a property on Crofton Avenue at around midday on Tuesday 30 May. A forensic post mortem examination determined she died of head injuries.

Emily’s family is receiving support from specially trained officers and have asked for their privacy to be respected at this difficult time.

Detective Chief Inspector Andrea Bowell said: “The property at Crofton Avenue, where Emily’s body was found, has undergone painstaking and extensive forensic examination. This is necessary

to gather as much evidence as possible to help us understand exactly what happened.

“Emily’s family and friends are understandably devastated by her death. We are carrying out our enquiries with the respect and compassion that Emily and her loved ones deserve, .

“I’d urge anyone who may have information to come forward. Emily was reported missing to police on Thursday 25 May, after she had not been seen or heard from since the previous Friday (19 May).

“We would therefore be keen to hear from anyone who may be able to tell us more about Emily’s movements since 19 May, whether they saw her or spoke with her, as that information could be incredibly important to our investigation.”

Community group dedication

Residents Voluntary Group Transforms Burncross Community with Dedication and Initiatives

Since its inception in 2006, the Burncross Action Team (BAT), a dedicated resident's voluntary group, has been tirelessly working to enhance the local community. Their efforts have ranged from keeping the streets pristine and litter-free to adorning the surroundings with vibrant floral displays. In addition, they have focused on improving the local green areas and playgrounds, making Burncross a more pleasant place to live.

The year 2022 marked a significant achievement for the Burncross Action Team. Their relentless pursuit of better amenities for the community led to their successful bid for funding through a Covid Memorial Grant. This grant enabled them to replace the decaying wooden benches in the Acorn Recreation Ground. Now, three benches made from recycled plastic proudly adorn the area, providing a comfortable and durable seating option for visi-

tors. To commemorate the solemnity of the past year, plaques have been affixed to the benches, featuring heartfelt messages from local residents that express gratitude and hope for the future after the pandemic.

Buoyed by their recent success, the Burncross Action Team has already set their sights on their next endeavour - the installation of an inclusive roundabout in the McKenzie playground. This project aims to create a space that accommodates and engages younger residents, fostering a sense of inclusivity and joy. It follows closely on the heels of their recent contribution to the playground's improvement, which involved a fresh coat of paint and the addition of two springers. BAT has proven to be the driving force behind the transformation of the McKenzie playground into a vibrant and inviting space for children to enjoy.

Burncross Action Team prides itself on being an inclusive group, welcoming individuals of all ages to join in their activities. They strongly believe that collective effort and community involvement are pivotal to creating positive change. To stay updated on the group's endeavours, interested individuals can follow BAT on their Facebook page.

The residents of Burncross are fortunate to have such a dedicated and proactive group in their community. Through their unwavering commitment, the Burncross Action Team continues to make a lasting impact, fostering a sense of pride and camaraderie among the locals. With each project they undertake, BAT proves that when individuals come together for a common cause, they can transform their community into a thriving and vibrant place to call home.

Penistone Charity Fun run

The Penistone fun run returns this weekend and has the backing once again from Fox Valley’s department store, Sandersons.

The fun run raises money in memory of Penistone brothers Jack and Paul Sykes and is due to take place this Saturday [11 June] kickstarting the mayors parade.

It’s the sixth year that the 2km run has been staged on the trails around Penistone to help raise funds for the Heads Together (Barnsley) Charitable Trust, a charity set up in memory of the brothers who tragically lost their lives in a house fire.

More than 200 people usually take part in the run raising vital funds that assist families in need of respite care and specialist equipment.

This year’s event will start at the Penistone Showground at 10am and runners are encouraged to dress in their loudest and brightest clothes possible to keep the memories alive for the two brothers who would have been celebrating milestone birthdays this year. Jack would have been 21 this year and Paul 18 however their lives came to a tragic end in a house fire started by their father when they were just 12 and 9.

Sandersons Department Store has donated the medals which will be pre-

sented to all the finishers by Jack and Paul’s mum, Claire Throssell and tele vision journalist and presenter, Chris tine Talbot.

Claire said: “The support from the community we have had over the pre vious events has been fantastic and we are hoping for the same turnout this year to raise as much money as pos sible for this fantastic charity.

“We are introducing an overall ‘cham pion of the Fun Run’ award in recogni tion of those runners who have made a long-term commitment to the cause and help make the event happen.

“We’d like to say a big thank you to Sandersons for supporting the event again this year and providing the med als for all the runners.”

Louise Fearnehough from Sandersons said: “We are delighted to be support ing this fantastic community event in memory of two very special boys. We hope the event raises lots of money for Heads Together and we wish all run ners the very best on Sunday.”

Online entries cost £5 individually and £10 for a family entry of up to five people. You can register through the following link https://racebest.com/ races/wxcrv. Entries will also be taken on the day, the event starts at 10:30am with registration open from 9:30am.

YOUNG FATHER IN PLEA FOR HELP

Family of young Yorkshire father diagnosed with cancer raise money to help with his baby son's living costs while he is unable to work, writes Grace Newton or The Yorkshire Post.

A fundraiser has been launched for a young Yorkshire father who faces rising childcare costs as he is unable to work while being treated for cancer.

Taylor Gregory, 19, is living on just £100 a week sick pay from his job as a forklift truck driver, which has left him struggling to meet living expenses for his baby son River.

Mr Gregory, from Ecclesfield in Sheffield, was told by doctors that had he left it later to seek hospital treatment, a tumour in his neck would have obstructed his windpipe and he would likely have died.

The teenager originally thought he was suffering from migraines, but after struggling to breathe and collapsing, he was diagnosed with lymphona and is now undergoing chemotherapy.

Mr Gregory even tried to work through the pain until his condition deteriorated. He now faces three months of treatment, and with recuperation time, nine months without working.

His girlfriend, Bunni Yates, 19, has moved from her home in Barnsley to help care for Mr Gregory, whose mother is also recovering from a serious back injury.

The family decided to launch the Gofundme appeal to help with the cost of buying food, nappies and clothes for one-year-old River while Mr Gregory is unable to earn a wage. Over £1,200 has already been raised.

MIDDLEWOOD TRAM STOP APPEAL

Police in Sheffield have released an im age of a person they believe could hold important information relating to a woman being followed and assaulted last month.

At around 6pm on Friday 5 May, it is reported that the victim – a woman in her 20s – was travelling on a tram when an unknown man sat near to her and behaved in a manner towards her that made her feel uncomfortable. She got off the tram in Middlewood, and the man followed her. Nearby, he is understood to have grabbed the vic tim’s arm, before she pushed him away and made her way home.

The suspect is believed to have re mained in the area for a period of time, staring at the woman. He is not thought to have said anything and while the victim was not injured, she was left in credibly distressed by the incident. Major rally Car raCe CoMing to the area

Local MP Miriam Cates has welcomed the announcement that Penistone will host a major motor race later this year.

The White’s Bakery South Yorkshire Stages Rally closed road car rally is organised by the Sheffield and Hallamshire Motor Club, with the backing of Motorsport UK, and will take place in and around Penistone this December.

This event offers an exciting opportunity for Penistone to act as host to another national level sporting event, following 2017’s Tour de Yorkshire. The country roads surrounding Penistone have been identified by race organisers as the perfect challenge for professional drivers who will be coming from across the country.

Commenting on the announcement, Miriam Cates MP said: "Over the past year, I’ve been working alongside the Sheffield and Hallamshire Motor Club to support their proposal to bring the rally to Penistone.

"It’s been wonderful to see such enthusiasm for the rally from residents living across our Penistone and Stocksbridge constituency. Whilst

consultations with residents and businesses along and nearby the route are ongoing, I’m reassured that the Club and Barnsley Council are working hard to finalise the arrangements.

"This carbon-neutral rally will be a great opportunity for Penistone and the surrounding area to show off some of the brilliant hospitality and retail we have to offer.

"Over the coming weeks and months I’ll continue to work with the Council and the Club, and will stay in touch with local businesses and residents to make sure we’re ready for what I’m sure will be a memorable event."

Organisers expect hundreds of thousands of pounds to be spent in the local area as drivers, mechanics and spectators travel to Penistone. Rally Director Andrew Knott said: "Without Miriam’s interest and support the event would never have progressed, on behalf of Sheffield and Hallamshire Motor Club we would like to thank Miriam and her team for the support."

Brass Band Enthralls Crowds

Each band participating in the event is expected to perform two marches. The first march is played as they proceed to the competition area, usually involving a challenging uphill journey. Once there, hidden adjudicators, situated in covert locations such as caravans or darkened shop windows, listen intently as the bands perform their second march. The mysterious nature of the adjudication process adds an air of surrealism to the event, leaving newcomers amazed.

This year, Deepcar Band chose the spirited march "Olympia," composed by J. Greenwood, to captivate the audience. Under the adept guidance of Andy Horton, the band's musical director, each performance was executed with precision and flair.

CCTV APPEAL DOG BITE INCIDENT

Officers in Sheffield have released an image of a man they would like to speak to in connection with a dog bite incident.

on their annual musical pilgrimage to Saddleworth for the renowned Whit Friday marches. Aboard a coach loaded with instruments, sheet music, and infectious enthusiasm, the band set off on their journey over the moors to partake in this prestigious event. Originating in 1884 at a local level, the Whit Friday marches have evolved into a grand spectacle, attracting brass bands of all abilities. Enthusiasts from across the United Kingdom and even abroad make the journey to Saddleworth to join in the festivities. Throughout the afternoon and evening, bands are invited to perform in various villages across the Saddleworth area, navigating winding country lanes and enduring queues of coaches, all while calculating the optimal waiting times before their next performance.

Deepcar Band showcased their talent at six venues, including Diggle and Dobcross, with their melodious tunes echoing through the torchlit streets as the day came to a close in Scouthead. Led by their new musical director, Andy Horton, the band played skillfully, delighting the gathered crowd.

While healthy competition permeates the event, the ultimate joy lies in the communal celebration of music within the beautiful open-air surroundings. The audience, lining the streets, listened attentively and enthusiastically applauded each band. The Whit Friday marches provide a genuine festival experience, offering delightful music free of charge.

As the evening drew to a close, the band members, buoyed by their successful performances, still found enough energy to sing joyously on the coach ride back home.

Looking ahead, Deepcar Band eagerly anticipates presenting their summer program of music at events closer to home. Their upcoming performances include St. Anne's School fete on June 24th and Bolsterstone Gala on July 1st. The band's commitment to entertaining their audience remains unwavering, and their love for music shines brightly with each performance.

It is reported that on Wednesday 19 April a dog had bitten a horse in Greno Woods in Sheffield, which resulted in significant facial injuries on the horse.

Enquiries are ongoing but officers are keen to identify the man in the image as they may be able to assist with enquiries. Do you recognise him?

If you can help, you can pass information via our online live chat, our online portal or by calling 101 by quoting incident number 851 on 19 April. You can access our online portal here: www. southyorks.police.uk/ contact-us/report-something/

Alternatively, if you prefer not to give your personal details, you can stay anonymous and pass on what you know by contacting the independent charity Crimestoppers.

Exhibition highlights Marnock’s impact

Sheffield Botanical Gardens is partnering with the Gardens Trust to celebrate Scottish landscape gardener, horticulturalist, and writer Robert Marnock who lived from 1800 to 1889.

Throughout June there will be a programme of events Celebrating Marnock at Sheffield Botanical Gardens, Weston Park, and Sheffield General Cemetery, which are all Marnock sites. Activities will also be happening nationwide across the summer of 2023, with Marnock sites all over Britain taking part.

chestra (SPO) has been busy preparing for its next concert at the Victoria Hall, following their sell out performance of Mahler’s Second Symphony at Sheffield City Hall in March with Sheffield Philharmonic Chorus, Hallam Sinfonia and Hallam Choral Society. The SPO is taking its foot off the gas for its summer concert on 10th June, with a lighter programme of beautiful melodic classics by Florence Price, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor and Antonín Dvorák.

“Like many orchestras, we’ve been exploring the musical world of Florence Price recently”, says the Orchestra’s Conductor, George Morton. He continued, “Her music has been going through a revival recently after over 200 lost manuscripts of her music were discovered in a house in Chicago in 2009. Price’s music brings together the European classical tradition with folk music and melodies of African American spirituals, so it has a very distinct sound. She was a trailblazing composer and was the first African American woman to have her music performed by a major symphony orchestra in 1933. On Saturday 10th June we’ll be playing her Concert Overture No. 1 on the spiritual ‘Sinner, Please Don't Let This Harvest Pass’.”

Next up in the programme the Orchestra will play the incidental music from Shakespeare’s Othello by English composer, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor. The rich and haunting melodies, racing dances

and lilting ‘Children’s Intermezzo’ in this music never fails to dazzle audiences. The Suite will feature some of the Orchestra’s most talented local soloists too, including 18 year old Lucy Heeley from Rotherham. Lucy currently plays cornet for the World-renowned Grimethorpe Colliery Band, and has been playing Principal Trumpet with the SPO since July 2021.

To close the concert is Dvořák's rousing Seventh Symphony. Although the Ninth Symphony (the ‘New World’) is performed more often, Dvořák's Seventh Symphony is often thought of as his finest. It is packed with references to his Czech homeland and is full of Slavonic melodies and warmhearted lyrical themes, but there’s also a darker side to this symphony. The recent death of his mother and his eldest child weighed heavily; the footnote to the second movement reads: 'From the sad years'. But, inspired to compose music which he believed must be ‘capable of stirring the world', the Symphony ends with an assertive defiance to a glorious close. To find out more about the programme you can join classical music blogger, Alex Burns and Conductor George Morton, as they host a short pre-concert talk at 7pm.

Potholes

I am writing to you with regards to the state of the roads in Chapeltown, I am totally dismayed at the inability of the Sheffield Streets Ahead team

Wildfires

At the weekend my team spent our entire shift assisting SYFR and local Game Keepers in securing the scene of a wildfire on Agden Side Road in Bradfield to allow them to tackle the blaze.

Topical research

Dear look local

Thought I'd do some research this week.

To avoid any danger of be seen as scientific or worse an expert, my work is a very small, non peer reviewed survey and the questions were do you

a) not give a monkey's ?

b) give a monkey's ?

These were posed to participants on the following subjects

a) would you like a bus to come when needed ?

b) would you like an ambulance to come when needed?

c) would you like to see the destruction of total world domination by cultural marxism ?

Results to follow

Yours

It is highly likely the fire was caused by some careless person throwing a lit tab end out of the car window as they drove down the road, which landed on some dry grass and set alight. The fire quickly spread into the bracken and peat burning everything in its path, including trees. Luckily the local Game Keepers and SYFR were quickly on scene to tackle the blaze and in a joint effort got the fire under control. However due to the nature of the landscape new fires kept erupting until the fire service managed to dowse the entire area in water.

Please can we ask that people visiting our beautiful countryside take extra care in times of dry weather and be more careful with cigarettes and cigars when finishing them. Make sure they are fully extinguished and take them home with you, do not throw them out of an open car window.

If my team catch anyone throwing tab ends or, for that matter, any other rubbish out of their window we will fine you for littering and if we can prove that your tab end caused a serious wild fire such as this you can be prosecuted a receive a fine of up to £1000 and/or a prison sentence!

Please also remember BBQ's and wild camping/ fires are also illegal and can cause huge fires which are very hard to control and not only put peoples lives at risk, they kill wildlife and destroy their habitat.

For more information on fire safety check out SYFR's website or search the internet for the 'Be Moor Aware' campaign.

Our £9.3 billion urban forest

Last week in Look Local (issue 1272), the rather strange editorial decision to only print the second half of my letter, and to start midsentence, is bound to have left readers confused. I hope this letter provides some clarity.

In response to the city-wide tree campaign that the Save Our Roadside Trees group (SORT) established in 2015, in 2017 Sheffield City Council (SCC) commissioned a private firm –‘Treeconomics’ – to do some research and report the findings. The firm assessed how much of the Sheffield area is covered by trees and calculated the monetary value of the entire tree stock, and of a range of beneficial eco-system services that the trees afford to the environment & communities.

On 12/12/2018, for the first time ever, SCC formally adopted a tree strategy, 11 years after an independent consultancy (hired by that SCC to survey the street tree population) had advised SCC to have one. This followed over three years of campaigning by SORT and Sheffield Tree Action Groups for SCC to have a city tree strategy. Citing results from a report that Treeconomics provided to SCC in winter 2017, the tree strategy informs that Sheffield’s trees provide benefits worth at least £40.3 million per year. That includes the annual filtration of 374 tonnes of pollutants from the air we breathe – a service valued at £2.3m each year!

The strategy informed that, in 2017, Sheffield’s trees were storing 545,000 tonnes of carbon - a service valued at £34.8 million - and sequestering an additional 21,800 tonnes per year – a service worth £1.39 million. However, SCC neglected to make the Treeconomics report available to anyone until after Treeconomics had posted the report online, on 27/1/2021. The value of Sheffield’s trees had been a political ‘hot potato’, as SCC had asserted that its street trees were worth significantly less than what it would cost to retain and maintain them, and to repair any occasional associated damage. A SCC response to a request submitted under the Freedom of Information Act had revealed that SCC did not do or use risk assessments or cost:benefit analyses when making decisions about whether or not to fell trees.

On 3/10/2015, the SCC & Amey team responsible for the £2.2bn city-wide highway maintenance project – ‘Streets Ahead’ – responded to a question presented by Cllr Bond. Quote: “…it would be reasonable to assume that the financial impact to the council of any moratorium on tree felling and the subsequent knock-on effects would likely be greater than the cumulative value of these ecosystem services across our city’s entire tree stock of over 2 million trees.”

As soon as the Treeconomics report was published, everyone could see what SCC had been wanting to hide – the fact that Sheffield’s collective tree cover – the ‘urban forest’ was valued at over £9.3bn. To quote from page 50 of the report:

“For the urban forest of Sheffield, the estimated total public amenity asset value is over £9.3 billion.”

After the Forestry Commission investigation into alleged illegal felling of street trees, and publication of its ‘Sheffield Tree Felling Investigation Report’, the Sheffield Street Tree Strategy Development Group shred a separate Treeconomics report that the group had commissioned, dated November 2019. Using the Capital Asset Value for Amenity Trees method of valuation, it reported the SCC street tree population is worth over £340 million!

An Extraordinary Meeting of The City Council’ was held at Sheffield Town Hall, on 10/5/2023. It had been convened “to consider the implications of the street tree inquiry on the city, Sheffield City Council and on councillors involved in the decision-making at that time.” It was at that meeting that SCC resolved that the Strategy and Resources Policy Committee install a plaque in the entrance of the Town Hall (alongside the Kinder Scout mass trespass plaque). Quote: “ in recognition of those who fought for our environmental heritage and were vindicated, and to serve as a reminder to all elected members that this failure of leadership will never happen again”.

Lambs to the slaughter

Hello Editor

Since the Healey budget of 1978 imposed by the IMF, there has been an inexorable adoption by mainstream political parties of the fundamentalist form of capitalism based upon the basic mantra that public sector provision is bad whilst private enterprise is good. Hence the three trademark drivers of political policy being ruthlessly pursued. Namely: privatization – sell off (often at a generous discount) any public assets that private corporations can be running at a profit – for the benefit of shareholders and senior management of course; the two usually being synonymous. Deregulation – removal of all rules preventing the generation of profits; and deep cuts in public sector (especially social) spending. Thus the adherence to dogmas such as: monetarism, balanced budget etc, to legitimise austerity programs designed to create crises which the contracts to cure can then be doled out to the magic circle of private enterprise corporations, so beloved of politicians. Usually because they donate generously to their party’s coffers.

As Naomi Klein, for e.g. relates, “the right has systematically used crises, real and trumped up to push through a brutal ideological agenda designed not to solve problems that created the crises, but to enrich elites… Finding new ways to privatize the commons and to profit from disaster are what our current system is built to do”. To which, of course, we are told there is no alternative.

I believe that looking at the continued running down and stealthy privatisation of the NHS, the debacle that is the railways and the latest scandal to arise in the water industry, are just three current examples of the aforementioned on a national level. Whilst the recent attack on King Edward’s School in Sheffield is a more locally based exemplar. Hence when people complain bitterly that such a situation prevails, the perpetrators take that as a sign of progress, not a wake up call to take effective corrective action. Indeed, any alternative suggestion is (in tune with such as the American Tea Party right and Trumpism) vehemently attacked as socialism; as if such is seen as a terrible abomination to be avoided at all costs and its adherents burnt at the stake for heresy. Witness “Uncle Joe” Starmer’s and his myrmidons’ present strategy in the Labour Party!

So, will a significant majority of voters accept Lemming-like the mantra that there is no alternative and stoically muddle through as best they can? With all the terrible consequences for large numbers that will entail? Or will they demand change? Which begs the question as to where will effective opposition to such practises and leadership to effect change come from in future I wonder.

Then again, I’d be willing to bet that even if effective opposition did get its act together and present a viable alternative, the majority of the complainers would still turn out to vote for the status quo –then complain bitterly at their treatment. After all, ten thousand Lemmings can’t be wrong can they?

Yours faithfully,

HIT AN RUN LEAVES PEDESTRIANS WITH LIFE-CHANGING INJURIES

SYP are appealing for witnesses and information following a road traffic collision that has left a man with life altering injuries.

On Sunday, 4 June just after 1pm Police received reports of a road traffic collision on Beeley Wood Lane in Sheffield involving a car and two pedestrians. It is believed that a black SUV collided with two pedestrians, a 28-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman before the driver and his two passengers fled the scene.

The 28-year-old man suffered life-altering injuries to his leg and remains in hospital. The woman suffered minor injuries.

Officers are keen to hear from anyone who witnessed the collision or saw the black SUV prior to the collision.

If you can help, please report online, via live chat or by calling 101 quoting incident number 410 of 4 June 2023.

Dashcam and video footage can be sent to enquiries@southyorks.pnn.police.uk with the incident number in the subject line.

Sheffield Clean Air Zone

The local exemptions that delayed charging for Light Goods Vehicles (LGV) and Hackney Carriage Taxi vehicles have now ended. From Monday 5 June, charges will apply to enter the CAZ unless the vehicle is compliant or has an alternative exemption. In its first month of operation, Sheffield City Council received over £200,000 directly from the CAZ charges and fines.

“Today, all exemptions have come to an end and so even more people will be charged to travel across the city, even if they only travel along the ring road.

I've been calling on Sheffield City Council to review the CAZ but they are failing to engage with me on this issue. So I’ve now written to the Secretary of State, Michael Gove, to share my concern and to request his support.”

One family, two football teams…it could have been a recipe for domestic disaster when a young Ritchie Humphreys signed to play for Sheffield Wednesday even though dad John was a lifelong Sheffield United fan.

Throughout his sporting career Ritchie would go on to play with Scunthorpe, Cardiff, Cam bridge, Hartlepool, Port Vale and Chesterfield, also winning five caps for England at under-20 and under-21 levels.

While always supporting his son, dad John remained loyal to United, though, and following his death at St Luke’s Hospice at the end of a long fight with Mesothelioma, Ritchie decided that fundraising for the charity should have a Sheffield United theme.

Which is why on June 23 Ritchie, who is now the Players’ Union rep with the Professional Football Association, will be joined by friends James Goddard, Wayne Morton and Dave Palmer for a five-day, 500-mile cycle challenge that will see them visit all the stadiums where John saw his beloved United win promotion in 1982, 1989 and 1990.

And the aim is to raise more than £20,000 to ensure that other families receive the same levels of support that John received during his time as a St Luke’s patient.

The challenge will start at Sheffield United and then go on to St Luke’s itself before heading to Wolverhampton and Leicester before coming back to Sheffield and then heading off to Darlington – where the original stadium is now a supermarket – and Hartlepool.

ture, the quartet will also be wearing the kits

“Dad was in St Luke’s for just five days but they

“It was a time when me and my mum and my sister could all be together with dad again and that was so important because it gave us all the chance to say the things we needed to say.

“The people at St Luke’s were just amazing, so calm and so supportive – they didn’t just look after my dad, they looked after the whole family.

“As a family we will never be able to thank the amazing people at St Luke’s enough for the love and care they showed dad.

“Whilst sitting with dad in his final days, I wanted to think of a way to raise money and awareness for this brilliant charity.

“Then, when it began to look like Sheffield United were going to get promoted this season, that’s when the idea of visiting all the grounds where they had been promoted before started to take off.

“We’re visiting all the grounds where my dad saw Sheffield United gain promotion because that meant so much to him.”

Steels Youth Achieve Remarkable Double

aiming to respond swiftly. However, Daniel Emery, the Steels' goalkeeper, showcased his brilliance with a superb save, denying Worsbrough's goal-bound effort in the penalty area. Though momentarily shaken, the Steels quickly regained their composure, thwarting any significant chances for their opponents from Barnsley.

Eager to extend their advantage and quell any nerves, the Young Steels found their second goal. A splendidly delivered free-kick from a deep position caused chaos in the box, with Tyler Folly rising above everyone to deftly guide his header into the back of the net, leaving the Worsbrough goalkeeper helpless.

break. Ollie Nowak showcased his skill and agility, eluding his marker and delivering a teasing ball into the box. Manager’s Player of the Year, Joe West, displaying excellent awareness, passed the ball sideways instead of shooting, finding Cormack who unleashed a thunderous strike into the top corner, further solidifying the Young Steels' commanding position.

standably, the flow of the game was affected as players spent time with their families in the stands, enjoying refreshments. Worsbrough managed a solitary shot on goal, but it posed no significant challenge for the steadfast Daniel Emery. Off the pitch, the Worsbrough manager's dissent resulted in a sending-off, marking a notable incident during this phase of the game.

showcased their exceptional talent and determination as they achieved a remarkable double victory, defeating Worsbrough Bridge with an emphatic 4-1 win in the final of the Meadowhall and Bud Evans Cup.

After falling short in last season's final against Kiveton Miners Welfare, the Steels U18s were eager to take control of the match from the start. Despite facing a resilient Wors-

brough defence, the Steels displayed their dominance on the field.

The breakthrough arrived when a lofted cross from the right wing found its way back into the six-yard box, where Players Player of the Year, John Hennessey, calmly slotted the ball home from close range, giving the Young Steels a well-deserved lead.

As the game progressed, Worsbrough enjoyed a promising spell,

With a commanding lead before halftime, Stocksbridge continued to dominate the game, creating numerous opportunities to put the match out of reach for their opponents. Although a resolute defender blocked Spectator’s Player of the Year, Alex Cormack's volley and Worsbrough's goalkeeper made an impressive save to deny Matty Lee's powerful strike, the Steels managed to secure a third goal just before the

Entering the second half, Worsbrough showed determination in their quest for a comeback. They managed to breach the Steels' defence and found the back of the net through their number 2, calmly finishing from close range. However, a serious incident temporarily halted the game for an hour and a half. John Hennessey, poised for a promising run, was met with a forceful challenge resulting in a suspected fracture for Worsbrough's defender, Brandon Clifford. Play was momentarily paused as everyone awaited medical assistance, but the match eventually resumed. Following the restart, both teams struggled to find their rhythm after the extended interruption. Tigers demolish kings lynn

SHEFFIELD boss Simon Stead says silencing the home crowd early on was always going to be an important factor in their result at King’s Lynn.

The Tru Plant Tigers delivered their best ever away display in the Sports Insure Premiership on Thursday, winning 59-31 at the Adrian Flux Arena.

There was plenty of anticipation around the Norfolk venue in the build-up to the meeting having secured the signature of 2021 World Champion Artem Laguta earlier in the week.

The Club also handed out free air horns and whistles to help boost the atmosphere after a tough start to the season – but the Tigers turned up in ruthless mood.

They struck four 5-1s in the opening five races to inflict further damage on King’s Lynn’s campaign before romping to victory to end their run of three straight losses on the road.

“We needed that,” Stead said.

“We’ve had a few fixtures away from home where we haven’t

performed as we should have done.

“But we were dominant and back to something like what I know we’re capable of.

“There was a lot of talk about Artem and them in the build-up and look, it’s great to see him in British Speedway and fair play

to King’s Lynn because they’ve pulled one out the bag there.

“But we needed to remove ourselves from that hype, get off on the front foot, come here and do the job and we’ve done just that.”

The Tru Plant Tigers turn their attentions to the first leg of their Sports Insure Premiership

As the clock approached the 90th minute, Stocksbridge delivered the final blow. Breaking into the box, Ben Ransford expertly controlled the ball with his chest before volleying it into the bottom corner of the net. Despite the goalkeeper's efforts to make a save, the ball found its way home. Moments later, the referee blew the whistle, confirming Stocksbridge U18s as the deserving winners of the Cup and the Double.

This triumph marks a significant achievement for the Steels Youth team, showcasing their talent, resilience, and determination throughout the competition.

NEW FRIENDSHIPS FORGED

It was an early start to Sunday morning for Oughtibridge as they travelled to Tickhill for their first encounter with the Doncaster team in the South Yorkshire Women’s and Girls’ Softball Cricket League.

A warm welcome awaited Oughtibridge, and they wasted no time getting started and put a solid score on the board. The Oughtibridge batting pairs were loud on the square, with clear communication throughout, running for many more twos than in previous games. With only one wicket lost and four boundaries hit by Sian, Claire, Sue and Ros, Oughtibridge finished on their highest run total this summer, 290/1.

Being at home Tickhill batted well, but due to some fine fielding by Oughtibridge they only managed three boundaries. Tickhill also lost three wickets, a bowled out by Oughtibridge Captain Liz, another by Sian and a run out from an accurate throw by Hayley. Although Tickhill maintained the pressure on the Oughtibridge fielders right up to their last pair, it just wasn’t enough to steal the win. Tickhill finished 275/3.

Buoyant from their win, Oughtibridge headed home to welcome the new women’s softball team from Stockbridge for a friendly

at the S6 War Memorial Sports Ground. Despite some ‘first game’ apprehension, Stocksbridge had arrived ready to get stuck in and enjoy their cricket in the sunshine.

The Stocksbridge supporters lined the boundary, clapping and cheering on their team. Fielding first, Stocksbridge responded well, moving the field around to stem the Oughtibridge run score and backed up with the look of a more experienced team. Going into bat, Stocksbridge faced the Oughtibridge bowlers with excited trepidation and performed well in the afternoon heat. The day finished with only a glance at the scoreboard, and more importantly some well-deserved refreshments, a new relationship forged between the two neighbouring teams and a lovely promise to play again very soon.

The opportunities for women and girls to play cricket is continuing to increase rapidly. The South Yorkshire Softball League has 36 teams competing in three Divisions this year, and both Oughtibridge and Stocksbridge welcome those with an interest in playing, whether you have experience or not.
