Penistone charity run

The Penistone fun run returns this weekend and has the backing once again from Fox Valley’s department store, Sandersons.

The fun run raises money in memory of Penistone brothers Jack and Paul Sykes and is due to take place this Saturday [11 June] kickstarting the mayors parade.

It’s the sixth year that the 2km run has been staged on the trails around Penistone to help raise funds for the Heads Together (Barnsley) Charitable Trust, a charity set up in memory of the brothers who tragically lost their lives in a house fire.

More than 200 people usually take part in the run raising vital funds that assist families in need of respite care and specialist equipment.

This year’s event will start at the Penistone Showground at 10am and runners are encouraged to dress in their loudest and brightest clothes possible to keep the memories alive for the two brothers who would have been celebrating milestone birthdays this year. Jack would have been 21 this year and Paul 18 however their lives came to a tragic end in a house fire started by their father when they were just 12 and 9.

Sandersons Department Store has donated the medals which will be pre-sented to all the finishers by Jack and Paul’s mum, Claire Throssell and tele vision journalist and presenter, Chris tine Talbot.

Claire said: “The support from the community we have had over the previous events has been fantastic and we are hoping for the same turnout this year to raise as much money as possible for this fantastic charity.

“We are introducing an overall ‘champion of the Fun Run’ award in recognition of those runners who have made a long-term commitment to the cause and help make the event happen.

“We’d like to say a big thank you to Sandersons for supporting the event again this year and providing the medals for all the runners.”

Louise Fearnehough from Sandersons said: “We are delighted to be supporting this fantastic community event in memory of two very special boys. We hope the event raises lots of money for Heads Together and we wish all runners the very best on Sunday.”

Online entries cost £5 individually and £10 for a family entry of up to five people. You can register through the following link https://racebest.com/ races/wxcrv. Entries will also be taken on the day, the event starts at 10:30am with registration open from 9:30am.
