MP introduces new Sex Ed bill

Local MP Miriam Cates has introduced a new Bill in Parliament which, if made law, would give parents the legal right to see materials used in relationships and sex education lessons in schools.

The law would create a legal duty for schools to share materials used in relationships and sex education lessons with parents and also prevent schools from using unpublished materials if they are produced by an external provider. This follows Miriam Cates' previous work exposing some of the graphic and

age-inappropriate content being taught in RSE.

Although the Government has written to schools explaining that they should be sharing teaching resources with parents, a recent legal case has ruled that the external provider's copyright takes priority over this request from the Education Secretary.

Under Mrs Cates' proposed law, the balance would tip in favour of transparency and the right of parents to see what their children are being taught.

Speaking about her Bill, Miriam Cates said: "It's

incredibly important that parents know what is being taught to their children, particularly in sensitive areas such as RSE. I know many schools do a good job in being transparent, but there are too many stories of parents being denied the right to see materials on spurious copyright grounds.

"The Government is absolutely right to have a policy of sharing resources with parents, but unfortunately this is not backed up in the law at the moment. That's why I've introduced this Bill to make sure that parents' legal rights are protected."

And now he has encapsulated his journey into the form of a book...

CELEBRATING THE LIFE OF JOSEPH HAYWARD

You may not recognise the name - Joseph Hayward was the man who found a way to press wire into a U shape and create the ideal light and flexible material to make the ribs of umbrellas. Without this invention, Samuel Fox would not have been able to patent his Paragon umbrella frame, which became known worldwide, made him his fortune and set the scene for the development of the steelworks and the town of Stocksbridge.

Thanks to a grant from the Sheffield Lakeland Landscape Partnership, Joseph’s fallen headstone in Bolsterstone graveyard has been restored in its upright position, and the ground around tidied up by the church volunteers and the Steel Valley Project. It is a fine pink granite stone, the same material as Samuel and Maria Fox’s graves are made of. Leaning against the stone are two Paragon umbrellas – you can see these up close in the museum in Stocksbridge Town Hall (open Tuesdays and Thursdays).

On the morning of Wednesday 21 June, an informal celebration of Joseph’s life and achievements was held beside the stone, attended by members of the Hayward family, Mayor of Stocksbridge Mark Whittaker, Heritage Champion Cllr Janet Ridler, and members of the church, Stocksbridge and

MG4 EV

District History Society and Bolsterstone Archaeology and Heritage Group.

History Society chair Dennis Pindar outlined the significance to the valley of Joseph’s life and work, and Ruth Morgan, who applied for the funding, explained how the project began and how the stone had been raised. Tea, cake and conversation were then enjoyed in the church.

Joseph was born in 1819 in the village of Derwent, and got to know Samuel Fox when both were apprenticed in Hathersage. He joined Fox at the new wire works in 1847, and not only invented the U shaped wire but also the process and machinery to make the ribs and frame. Though he went off on other projects, he returned to the works until his retirement, ever loyal to the friendship he and Fox had. He built Croft House on Hunshelf Road for his wife Ann and children, and died in 1901.

As part of the project, an information leaflet is being prepared which will be available in the graveyard, telling visitors about the church and something of the lives of Hayward and other people buried there.

If you want to see the headstone, turn left on the path after you go through the lychgate, pass the bolsterstones, and just around the bend the stone is on your left.

Lifelong ambition achieved around the British coastline

Continued from front page...

Now he has encapsulated his journey into the form of a book that went on sale on the 22nd of June. The book remarks on Jim’s journey, starting from his home in Penistone, and when asked what prompted him to do this walk, he said, “It has been a lifelong ambition of mine since I was seven years old, and I wanted to raise money for the Gurkhas.”

This ex-serviceman spent some time working alongside the Gurkhas during his time in the Royal Navy serving on HMS Gurkha and has raised over £37,000 for the Gurkha’s welfare trust with all the proceeds from his book going to the same cause.

The book contains all the highs and lows from his 578-day journey around the coastline with his wife, Sue tailing close by with the family camper van organising places to stay and keeping up to date with their social media page “I may be gone a while.”

He remarked on some of the bad times, the worst he described was falling 20 feet off the edge of a crumbling cliff and being airlifted to the nearest hospital where it took two days for him to recover for many that would have seen the end of his challenge but when asked why he decided to carry on Jim said, “I had a job to do, and I weren’t going to give up.”

The title of the book was inspired by the Arctic explorer Captain Lawrence Oats who famously said, “I am just going outside and maybe some time.” Jim explained that he misheard the quote and automatically put on a Yorkshire tone to the quote hence the walk and the book were called “I might be gone a while.”

The book has already sparked interest from fans around the world in the first 24 hours Mr Morton has sold books in New Zealand and Canada and at the generous price of just £10, this is a steal for an interesting and inspirational story of a man braving the elements to raise money for a regiment which gets very little acclaim for all their service to the British army.

You can purchase the book either from the Facebook page “I may be gone a while.” Or you can buy them from the Look Local office on Manchester Road, Stocksbridge.

EldErly AnglEr grAtEful

Tin Mill Angling Club, a beloved institution with a history spanning over 50 years, has recently taken significant strides to enhance accessibility for its members. Les Moss, a dedicated angler of 79 years who has been with the club since its inception, expressed his heartfelt gratitude for the club’s efforts, particularly as he now relies on a mobility scooter to get around.

Originally established in connection with the local steelworks, the club eventually transitioned into private management. Throughout its existence, it has faced financial challenges in maintaining its facilities, relying heavily on the dedication of a team of passionate volunteers. These committed individuals can be found at the crack of dawn, promptly opening the gates to the fishing ponds every morning.

Les Moss found himself facing limitations in his fishing endeavours due to inaccessible paths and overgrown walkways. Frustrated by the restrictions, he reached out to committee member Stephen Thickett for assistance. Recognising the importance of inclusivity, Stephen took immediate action to address the issue.

Thanks to the concerted efforts of a contractor, assisted by dedicated volunteers including Andy Glover, Steve Thickett, Rob Ranby, Daryl Brown and several others, the far bank on the River side of the Carp Side has been repaired. Additionally, overhanging trees along the Silver Side were removed before posing any hazards. The team successfully cleared the area of old metalwork, sheeting, and logs, ensuring unobstructed access to the fishing spots. The project, spanning five days, aimed to improve the overall experience for Les and others facing similar challenges.

Les Moss expressed his deep appreciation for the committee’s responsiveness and their work in restoring the paths, stating, “It’s great now, and I can now access the lake better. I can’t speak highly enough of the committee for listening and cleaning up all the paths for the likes of me and others like me.”

He went on to emphasise the significant impact of improved accessibility, not only for himself but also for others seeking solace in the joy of fishing. Les extended his heartfelt gratitude to the younger, more physically able members of the club, acknowledging their dedication in making his life easier.

Tin Mill Angling Club boasts a picturesque Tin Mill Dam and a stretch of the River Don measuring approximately 1½ miles in length. Located near Deepcar in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, the dam comprises two halves, housing a diverse range of fish species. The river offers ex-

cellent opportunities for both fly fishing and coarse fishing, with its waters home to Barbel, Chub, Dace, Trout, Grayling, Perch, Roach, and more. The club has invested over £10,000 in stocking the river over the years. Stretching from Deepcar to the vicinity of Bramalls Ponds near Thurgoland, this scenic section of the river offers anglers a rich fishing experience.

Thanks to the club’s commitment to inclusivity and the dedicated efforts of its volunteers, Les Moss and others facing mobility challenges can now fully enjoy their fishing activities. Tin Mill Angling Club continues to foster a warm and welcoming environment, enabling anglers of all abilities to connect with nature, pursue their passion, and forge meaningful connections within the fishing community.

Long serving staff member at Nursing Home retires after twenty-three years

GOODBYE EILEEN

Residents and staff members at Belmont House Care & Nursing Home in Stocksbridge came together to celebrate the retirement of their beloved care worker, Eileen Wood, who had dedicated an impressive twenty-three years of service to the facility. A heartfelt retirement party was organized in her honor, complete with a homemade cake, heartfelt cards, beautiful flowers, and thoughtful presents, as tokens of gratitude for her unwavering commitment and hard work.

Throughout her tenure at Belmont House, Eileen had assumed various roles, including senior care assistant, kitchen assistant, and chef, showcasing her versatility and adaptability within the organization. Over the years, Eileen developed a deep affection for her work, taking great joy in caring for the residents and brightening their days during her shifts.

Reflecting on her career, Eileen expressed immense satisfaction and pride in the care she provided to the residents and the positive impact she made on their lives. "I have enjoyed my job immensely, and I am proud of the care I have been able to provide for residents and the company. I would do it all again. Country Court has been the best thing that has happened to Belmont," commented Eileen, expressing her gratitude for the support she received from the organization.

One of Eileen's most cherished aspects of her role at Belmont House was the opportunity to provide individualized care to each resident, a responsibility she fulfilled with great pleasure. She dedicated herself wholeheartedly, working tirelessly both during the day and through the night, always giving her utmost effort in everything she did.

Home Manager Joanne Coldwell commended Eileen's exceptional dedication, stating,

"Eileen is a very lovely lady who has always gone the extra mile with all of our residents. She has been a tremendous support to the home and is a very reliable lady who will be missed greatly." The sentiment was echoed by a group of Care Assistants at Belmont House, who expressed their well wishes for Eileen in her retirement and expressed hopes that she would occasionally visit the home, as her presence would be dearly missed.

Born in Barnsley, Eileen eventually settled in Stocksbridge after marrying her husband, Michael, in 1973. Recently celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary, Eileen and Michael have built a beautiful life together, raising four children—Carol, Sharon, Ruth, and Christopher—and enjoying the company of numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

As she embarks on her well-deserved retirement, Eileen eagerly anticipates spending quality time in her static caravan, indulging her love for exploring new places. Wellbeing Coordinator Yvonne Snape shared, "Eileen is most looking forward to getting away in her static caravan in her retirement. She loves exploring different places, so this is first and foremost what she will be doing in her retirement."

Looking ahead, Eileen expressed her heartfelt wish for Belmont House Care & Nursing Home to continue providing excellent care to those in need. Her retirement serves as a testament to the legacy she leaves behind—a legacy of compassion, dedication, and unwavering commitment to the wellbeing of others. Belmont House and its residents will forever cherish the invaluable contributions Eileen has made throughout her remarkable twenty-three-year career, and her presence will be deeply missed.

Stocksbridge to re-Unite for Full Monty

The call has gone out for former Stocksbridge Band players to get back together for one night only to thank NHS staff…

The Unite the Union Band is set to thank the staff of the NHS who got one of their longest serving members back on the road to full health after contracting Covid-19, by putting on a special concert later this year.

Trevor Goodison was cared for at the Intensive Care Unit at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals, and with media interest once again on the famous 'Full Monty' film following the production of a new television series focussing on the main characters 25 years after they first hit the screens, a band reunion seemed like the best way of saying thanks.

The then Stocksbridge Engineering Band, with Trevor in the ranks, certainly played their part in making the film a hit, so as spokesperson Gemma Grayson told 4BR, there was no better way to help raise funds for the Sheffield Hospitals Charity than getting back 'for one night only'…

The concert will take place on the evening of Sunday 20th August, at Crookes Social Club, Sheffield.

Keep your hat on

"We couldn't think of a better way to say thanks to the wonderful staff who helped Trevor and so many people during Covid,"Emma said. "It was a great time to be with the band so if any former player would like to join us for the event, please get in touch. You can keep your hat on if you like"

Further details can be found on the band's Facebook page.

Activity hub plans closer

Plans for a new multi-activity centre at Hillsborough Park have been allowed to go ahead by Sheffield councillors who heard that the scheme has divided opinion in the area, writes Julia Armstrong, Local Democracy Reporter.

Sheffield City Council’s charity trustee sub-committee decided that the scheme, which would replace much of the current multi-use games area with tennis courts, partly free and partly paid-for activities, should go forward to the next stage of a legal process.

The park, like many in the city, is the property of a charity trust, of which the council is the sole trustee. By law, the proposal has to be advertised in the press to allow people to make comments and objections, which will then be considered by the sub-committee.

The proposal also requires planning permission.

The company running the activity hub and the park tennis courts would be given a 25year lease of the space. The new facilities would include

three new tennis courts, a resurfaced, redesigned and free-to-use multi-use games area (MUGA), a refreshment area and toilets.

New activities on offer in the paid-for area may include ‘padel’ tennis – a simplified form of the game – and mini golf. The plan has been put together with support and funding from the Lawn Tennis Association, who want to widen access to tennis coaching, and Sport England.

The Friends of Hillsborough Park have been spearheading a long-running campaign against the scheme, which would also see improvements to tennis courts in eight city parks. Andy Chaplin from the Friends group presented a 1,200-signature petition opposing the plan.

He said: “The big, open-plan MUGA is a popular amenity in the park.”

Mr Chaplin criticised a council consultation document graphic that he said did not show the real size of the new MUGA and pictured the current one with “a very greyed-out image”.

He repeated concerns about the future of Sheffield Cycling 4 All, a charity that uses the MUGA during its popular trike-riding sessions for adults who can’t ride a twowheel bike due to disability or a health condition.

Coun Fran Belbin said that the Friends had invited her to visit the park: “It was unfortunate that the Arctic Monkeys were setting up, which did indicate some of the limitations for local people of using the park at the moment. I did get a good understanding of the way it can get to feel that the decisions are taken away from people.”

The Friends’ petition says that the group believes the tennis courts are partly being moved to make life easier for the Tramlines music festival to bring in equipment. Their objections also include “commercialisation of a public park, with little regard for those people in Hillsborough community who currently use the MUGA for free”.

Hillsborough ward councillor Henry Nottage said: “Free-to-use sports facilities in parks are a very essential

8.9% APR

From £289 per month

requirement at the best of times and the cost-of-living crisis has certainly deepened this need. Without a crystal ball it’s very hard to say whether usage of the area would be lowered or increased by it being smaller but arguably of better quality.

“I’ve also had people contact me in support, particularly people who use the pump track who I see regularly because I have a bike shop in the area. Two things I am being told, particularly by parents of young children who use that part of the park, is that a toilet in that area and refreshments and somewhere to sit down would be good.

“The other element is that there have been security incidents that would be slightly addressed by the cameras that would be going in as part of the proposal.”

He said he was against “unbridled” commercialisation of public space but the proposal could help to boost the local economy, creating jobs.

“Unfortunately I can’t sit here and say everyone I

have spoken to in the ward is supportive or everyone is dismissive of this, it’s a very mixed tapestry,” said Coun Nottage.

“But ycling 4 All have been using that area for a long time. The initial proposals weren’t really workable from their end.

More consultation

“I’m very pleased to see there has been some movement from the proposals in terms of the design element and if there is a way for us, to a greater or lesser extent, to have some cake and eat some cake, I would be supportive of that.”

Jo Pearce of Sheffield parks and countryside service said that councillors had deferred their decision in March, when Coun Dawn Dale had argued that more consultation was needed with young people.

She said that consultation has now taken place with three local primary schools and Forge Valley secondary, as well as with young park users on the site. She said council staff had been

inspired to hear how much young people value the park, adding that around 80 per cent of them support the new scheme.

Ms Pearce said that discussions are ongoing with Cycling 4 All and good progress is being made. She said that the group are concerned about whether they get in the way of young people wanting to use the MUGA.

A possible solution suggested by a young person in the consultation is for the group to use the ‘learn to ride’ track which runs alongside the ‘all wheels’ cycling track. The MUGA design is also being tweaked to ensure Cycling 4 All riders can easily access that area.

Ms Pearce said staff are concerned that the decision is not deferred again because it could put £150,000 of Sport England funding in jeopardy as deadlines are tight. She said £25,000 funding has already been lost by delays.

Tea and Sympathy

Oh come and drink with me

A friendly cup of china tea

Perhaps then you will taste the cake

I took the time to carefully bake

Chocolate your favourite flavour

Cream and vanilla for you to savour

Hopefully this will bring to mind

How often we sat as the years unwind

Talking and listening to one another

Sharing troubles and toys over and over

Lately we seem to be drifting apart

700 smiles with your mouth boy not with your heart

We used to have such empathy

Please don't reject my sympathy.

Boris

I notice that we have not heard much from the MP for Penistone and Stocksbridge recently which is a shame as it would also appear that she was too busy to attend the House of Commons which was sitting on Monday evening to debate the privileges committee report on our late PM.

I do think she ought to be explaining why she could not be bothered to attend the debate and tell us if she supports the findings of the committee or if she considers Boris to be hard done by and how she would have voted

Road safety concerns

Dear Look-Local editor, please note eleven years ago:

"Road safety concerns by councillor Julie Grocutt" Says the Stocksbridge town council have also requested that the developer attend the town council meeting at 6:30pm on 13th July 2023. Julie Grocutt says as a member of the towns fund we have secured funding for a "nipper" bus. This should be in operation this year? We have also secured funding to look at the feasibility of opening up Don Valley Railway line into Stocksbridge? This is in its very early stages and is not approved at this time but is a work in progress. Reliable public transport is essential for our community not only to allow us to move about safely but look after our "green belt and our planet"?

The not forgotten Look Local issues from 19th July 2012 issue 706 also issue 708 for 2nd august 2012, eleven years on or is it eleven years later? But at this time early stages and is not approved at this time but is work in progress.

Could our town council tell us over the past eleven years how many town council meetings there have been? But how many meetings were about building and planning in our area over the past decade?

How many new houses have been built, could the town council tell us the only thing that's not been addressed is empty promises made by the town council back in 2012. So it's not a surprise our area here has road safety issues. Our surveillance over time has not improved but our planning by our town council and Sheffield City planning do not have surveillance regarding transport issues here. Their priority is just to build more houses and add more congestion onto our roads around Deepcar and Stocksbridge. But what surveillance our town council eyes do not see?

Yours,

Stockbridge’s own War Nurse turns 100: Sybil Travis

In the days before Sybil Travis’ 100th birthday, Isabel Butler spoke to her grandson Jason to gain some insight into the past century.

As we approached the 28th of June 2023, we also approached Sybil Travis’ 100th birthday. Sybil was born in 1923 in Stocksbridge. She has spent her whole life in Sheffield, apart from the four years where she generously dedicated her time to being a nurse during the Second World War. Sybil’s grandson Jason said how she used to enjoy reading in her spare time and has spent the majority of her life devoted to raising her children. When she was younger Sybil worked at Fox’s in the accounts office. She was married but only for a short time in an era where being a single parent was frowned upon. Sybil defied all odds by raising her two children, both of who

are deaf, on her own from a very young age whilst also holding down a job. Sybil’s family have ventured out in different directions, some have however stayed close. Her daughter and son-inlaw are still currently in Stocksbridge, with her son and daughter-in-law living close by in Barnsley. When speaking with Jason he said how during his lunch break at school, he would walk over to his grandmother’s house where she would cook him some lunch and they would take the time to sit and have a chat.

Sybil now resides in a care home after unfortunately being diagnosed with Dementia. It has been a privilege getting an insight into this incredible lady's life. Wishing you a very Happy Birthday Sybil, and congratulations! For information on dementia or to donate please visit www.dementiauk. org.

Simply stunning national and international classical musicians to perform in Bradfield

The 2023 Bradfield Festival of Music is underway In High Bradfield . This year’s highlights are the fabulous Academy of St Martin in the Fields from London on Saturday July 1st. The Academy of St Martin in the Fields is one of the world’s finest chamber orchestras, renowned for fresh, brilliant interpretations of the world’s greatest orchestral music. We welcome to Bradfield the Academy of St Martin in the Fields Chamber Ensemble, created in 1967 to perform the larger chamber works with players who customarily work together, drawn from the principal players of the orchestra.

The Doric String Quartet performed on Saturday June 24th (when civic guests included the Lord Mayor). Firmly established as one of the leading quartets of its generation, the Doric String Quartet has received enthusiastic responses from audiences and critics across the globe.

The amazing and energetic ZRI – a wonderful and very exciting group of musicians play at Bradfield on Friday June 30th. ZRI stands for Zum Roten Igel, or ‘To the Red Hedgehog’, the tavern in 19th century Vienna where Schubert and Brahms each went to hear Gypsy and folk music. ZRI will perform at Bradfield their radical rescoring of the Brahms Clarinet Quintet to include accordion and santouri (dulcimer),

Through the week, other performers are the Galliard Ensemble, the Linos Piano Trio, Armonico Consort So-

loists vocal group, and Bones Apart. Kevin Price, Head of Music Performance at Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama wrote of the Bones Apart (trombone quartet): “Bones Apart represents all that is best about British brass playing, with a beauty of sound and musicality that is simply stunning.”

All concerts are held at 7.30pm in High Bradfield Church, S6 6LG with its perfect acoustics and glorious view. Don’t miss out on this unique and brilliant Music Festival right on Sheffield’s doorstep!!

You are still able to buy tickets for each of the concerts through the website www.bradfieldfestivalofmusic.co.uk or by phoning 0114 234 1209. Full details of all concerts are on the website.

BARNSLEY’S BIG WEEKEND RETURNS THIS JULY

Barnsley’s Big Weekend returns to the town centre next month with an exciting, packed line-up of free events and entertainment.

Running from Friday 14 July to Sunday 16 July, the three-day extravaganza will take place across the town centre and feature live music from around the world, Barnsley Pride, a family sports day and more.

Activities on the Friday kick off in the Glass Works Square with the brand-new World Music Night. Bringing together a number of musical groups from Taiwan, Japan, India, Germany and more, visitors will be able to see performances from Taiko Drummers, Formosa Cultural Style Dancers and Barnsley’s own Frumptarn Guggenband amongst others.

Saturday sees the return of the popular Brassed On! Festival, with an eclectic mixture of big names to be announced soon. Rumour has it that some well-known, South Yorkshire crowd pleasers are going to be reimagined in The Glass Works Square, Alhambra Shopping Centre, and Peel Square.

There’s something for everyone as Saturday also brings with it Barnsley’s Pride celebrations, taking place in Mandela Gardens, and the return of Mayor’s Day.

The fun then continues on Sunday with What’s Your Move – a special day of healthfocused activities designed to get Barnsley moving. With a virtual reality swing, various sporting activities, give-it-a-go sessions and skate ramp performances, there’s plenty visitors of all ages to get stuck into.

Man discovers his musical voice with debut song

Scott Winwood has been living with Multiple Sclerosis since he was 23 but only now has he found the voice to express his feelings about his condition through the power of music.

Scott, who lives in Crookes, is supported by the St Luke’s Community team and is also a regular visitor to the Patient and Family Support services at the hospice’s Ecclesall Road South site.

It was there that he met musician Jamie Roberts who – along with musical partner Julia Waldronleads weekly music sessions for patients.

Jamie and Julia are part of The Swan Song Project, a charity that supports anyone living with a terminal illness, planning their end stage of life or dealing with bereavement to write and record their own original song.

With Jamie’s encouragement and support, Scott discovered a previously untapped musical voice he admits he never even knew he had.

And he has now composed and recorded his debut song, The Absurdity of Hope, which is based on his personal MS journey.

“I’ve never done anything like this in my life, it was just something I’d never even considered but I

have thoroughly enjoyed it and it’s been good fun,” Scott said.

“My house is full of books and people have always told me I should write my story down but I just thought I couldn’t be bothered.

“But then I thought that writing lyrics might be easier and I found it was relatively easy once I set my mind to it – I had some ideas so it was just a case of sitting down and getting on with it.”

The words came first and then, with the support of Jamie, the music came next.

“I’m very happy with the result but I don’t know what will happen to it now,” Scott said.

“All the feedback is that people really like it so I am going to write more – in fact I have something in the pipeline now, but it’s more of a dance tune this time!”

The Tru Plant Tigers were beaten at Owlerton for the first time this season on Thursday as their 100 per cent home record came to an end. They found themselves 12 points down with just six races gone as a series of slow starts proved costly.

Current World No.2 Jack Holder stormed to a six ride maximum – but apart from that, the hosts’ only other race win came when captain Kyle Howarth took the chequered flag in Heat Two.

Said Stead: “Any loss is disappointing, especially when it’s at home, so that hurts a bit.

“Congratulations to Leicester though, they came and

“We were asleep until Heat Seven and you can’t give a team with as much quality as Leicester a head start like we did.

“To be in with a chance of it going into Heat 15 was quite a comeback.

“The lads dug deep but we fell short and in certain positions it just wasn’t good enough.

“The lads are hurting from that as well so I hope that we can use this to project ourselves onto bigger and better things because that was not good enough.

“We need to push forward now and try and cement ourselves in those play-off places and work our way up the table.

Next Thursday (June 29, 7.30) sees all seven top-flight clubs head to Leicester’s Pidcock Motorcycles Arena for the 2023 Sports Insure Premiership Pairs with the Tigers’ next team action on Monday, July 3 (7.30) when they host Peterborough at Owlerton.

SHEFFIELD 44: Jack Holder 18, Kyle Howarth 8+1, Josh Pickering 6+1, Tobiasz Musielak 5, Lewis Kerr 3+2, Dan Gilkes 3, Adam Ellis 1.

LEICESTER 46: Max Fricke 10, Justin Sedgmen 9+2, Richard Lawson 9, Jake Allen 7+1, Nick Morris 5+1, Chris Harris 4+1, Drew Kemp 2. Leicester win aggregate point 99-81.

The Tuesday Running Club: When 4 becomes

Graihagh triumphant at inter counties

Graihagh Turner put in an excellent performance while representing Yorkshire at the Junior Inter Counties Fell Championships. Competing in the girls under17 category Graihagh won by a clear two minutes on a challenging course set in the Shropshire hills.

Every Tuesday a group of over 40 members, known as The Tuesday Running Club, head out on their weekly run. Their club is based in Stocksbridge and was formed back in 2019 when a group of four friends decided they wanted to run on a regular basis. When deciding a convenient day to do so, The Tuesday Running Club was born as the dedicated day was a Tuesday. Each member proudly runs in their bright orange branded T-shirts.

The club has entered a few events in the past years since the pandemic and have achieved some great results. Five of the members ran the Manchester Marathon achieving times ranging from 2 hours 53 minutes to 3 hours 29 minutes. Last weekend there was a great turnout for the Round Sheffield run, it was said to be an enjoyable social event!

There was further success for Penistone Footpath runners when they had the first three finishers at the James Blakeley fell race. Winner of the men’s race and first back was Tom Fryers who was followed in by Richard Cottam and brother James. Not surprisingly Penistone picked up the men’s team prize too.

Penistone entered a number of teams in the Damflask relay event which takes place every year around the Damflask Reservoir near Low Bradfield. Standout performance was from the men’s over60 team of Richard Docker, Stuart Woodhead and Bill Phillips who picked up bronze.

A strong contingent of Penistone runners took part in the Round Sheffield run which is an annual multi-stage running event that is 15 miles in length and divided into 11 stages. Runners can take

part in pairs or as individuals. First male pairing back for Penistone was Richard and David Mackie in 1-32-17. First lady pairing back was Chloe Worth and Kate Sandilands in 1-50-28. Tony Wright was the first solo male back for the club in 1-33-36 and first lady was Suzanne McGill in 1-3935.

On the parkrun scene Lisa Hinchliffe was first lady at Barnsley in 26-50 and Flynn Rogers took first place at Hillsborough juniors in 7-25. Annie Lightowler completed her 150th parkrun at Lyme Park in Disley.

Stocksbridge 1st XI 115 all out (Jack Newton 58, Matt Price 24)

Kexborough 1st XI 119-4

The 1st XI travelled to Kexborough looking to get back to winning ways, after four straight losses. Skipper Jack Newton won the toss and elected to bat first. Openers Newton and Matt Price set a great foundation and dug in well against some tight bowling. Price was the first to depart for a well made 24. However, this then brought a huge collapse. Newton was removed for a brilliant captains knock of 58. No other batters troubled the score and the 1st XI were bowled out for a very disappointing 115. Even more so, with the score at 70 before the fall of the first wicket.

The 1st needed a good start but the Kexborough batsmen dug in and made things difficult for the 1st bowlers. Andy Hibbert bowled a tight spell from the top end and took two wickets. Skipper Newton came into the attack and also took two wickets. However, it wasn’t enough and the 1st never had control of the innings. Kexbor-

ough chased down the total with 12 overs to spare and 6 wickets in hand. Another disappointing day for the 1st XI who will be looking to turn things around and avoid a relegation battle.

Barnsley and Woolley Miners 4th XI - 128/7 (C Thwaites 3-25)

Stocksbridge 2nd XI - 130/1 (J Hague 65*, S Perry 60*)

The 2nd XI hosted Barnsley this weekend, looking to make it 4 wins on the spin. Stocksbridge won the toss in muggy, cloudy conditions and elected to field. Opener Thwaites removed Stott for 0, leaving the score 1-1 after the first over.

Father and son duo Craig and James Wilkes rebuilt the Barnsley innings well, putting on a 56 run partnership. The promising partnership was ended by youngster Finn Siddall who picked up the key wicket of Wilkes Jnr with a well placed short ball. 12 year old Tom Perry came into the action after a bowling change,

James Hague then joined the party, clean bowling youngster Chapman-Stott, leaving Barnsley 80-4. Thwaites removed captain Darlow, which was quickly followed by Rowan Brearley removing Singh very first ball, thanks to an excellent catch by John Dowde. Thwaites then took a 3rd, leaving Barnsley on 128/7 from their 40 overs. A brilliant team effort in the field with everyone contributing, whether with the ball, ground fielding or with sharp catching.

Apart from the loss of an early wicket, Stocksbridge's response with the bat was near perfect. This was entirely due to the sensational 128 run partnership between James Hague and Steve Perry. Both men passed their half centuries and looked in superb touch. Perry hit 8 boundaries on his way to 60 not out and his partner Hague smashed 11 boundaries as he finished unbeaten on 65. An amazing partnership which saw Stocksbridge home in style with 13 overs remaining.

An excellent team performance with people stepping up to the plate when needed and all contributing to the victory. Four wins on the bounce now for the 2nds, with the promotion spots in

On week nine of the South Yorkshire Women’s and Girls’ Softball Cricket season, Oughtibridge Women’s and Girls’ team faced Sheffield Super Queens at home.

The lucky streak continued for Oughtibridge by winning the toss and electing to bat first. It was a tough shift at the stumps for the Oughtibridge batters, with only two women, Jane and Sonia, not getting out during the innings.

The loss of the first Oughtibridge wicket came in the 3rd over with a Super Queen catch. The Super Queens then took another two wickets back-to-back in the 5th over, the drama and angst continued as the next four Oughtibridge batters all lost

a wicket each, to end on a total of 252/7.

Cool drinks were needed at the break, and cool heads, as Oughtibridge set about defending a lower-than-expected run score. However, the bowlers were on fine form; two of Kin’s balls were edged by the Super Queen batter and caught by Keeper, Liz, and a run out by Liz meant the Super Queens lost three wickets in their first 5 overs. The middle batting pairs for Super Queens struggled to make an impact or a boundary as the Oughtibridge fielding was just too tight for them. The Super Queens' final batting pair needed something special to win… however, with two more wickets taken by Sian in the 13th over, it was pretty much game over for the Super Queens. Oughtibridge never

The previous weekend saw Oughtibridge take on Wickersley Vixens. Oughtibridge batted first and posted a respectable 275/3. However, the Vixen’s batting was consistently good and a nearflawless display saw the visitors rack up 281/1. The only wicket for Oughtibridge came in the 9th over from a run out by fast bowler Ros, with all the team joining in her celebrations.

Oughtibridge War Memorial Cricket Club are launching a new Girls-only training session every Friday from 7th July 17:30 – 18:30, ages 8-11 are welcome. Watch @ OWMCC socials for more details.

Festival day – coming soon, all welcome! The Oughtibridge Under 13s team will also be playing, and the Brass Band will be playing their instruments and some cricket too! Everyone is welcome for food, drinks, cake, a raffle and a fun day out for all the family, 11am - 5pm.
