Last week marked a momentous occasion for Wharncliffe Side Primary School as their boys’ orienteering team emerged triumphant in the highly-anticipated South Yorkshire School Games final. Battling against fierce competition from schools across the region, these young athletes showcased their exceptional skills and determination, earning well-deserved recognition for their outstanding achievement.

Representing the Sheffield area, the Wharncliffe Side Primary boys embarked on their exhilarating quest for victory at Clifton Park course in Rotherham. Undeterred by the challenging nature of the competition, the team’s four talented Year Six students demonstrated unwavering resilience, swiftly navigating the course with precision and tactical prowess.

With each step, the boys propelled themselves closer to success, leaving their opponents in awe as they triumphantly crossed the finish line. Their exceptional teamwork, unwavering focus, and remarkable speed propelled them to claim the coveted title, cementing

their place as champions in the realm of orienteering.

Celebrating the remarkable accomplishments of their pupils, Wharncliffe Side Primary School is filled with an air of pride and jubilation. “We do orienteering in PE, but this was a much bigger and tougher course. I’m really proud of all the children,” exclaimed their devoted teacher, Mr. Hartley.

Not to be outdone, the girls’ team also achieved an admirable accomplishment, securing an impressive fifth place among the fiercely competitive field. Their outstanding performance speaks volumes about their dedication, skill, and perseverance.

The success of the Wharncliffe Side Primary School orienteering teams goes far beyond their impressive results. It exemplifies the power of teamwork, resilience, and the unwavering commitment of both students and teachers. The school’s steadfast support and guidance have undoubtedly played a pivotal role in nurturing the talents and passion of these young athletes.

Shunting for awareness of cancers in young children

A Grandad whose Grandson is suffering from a cancerous tumour aims to raise awareness through his love of trains.

Kevan Adams, the Grandad of young Jordan who recently turned 9 is in the midst of building a miniature railway, in the hope it can be taken out on tour helping to not only raise awareness but also to raise money for PACT (Parents Association of Children with Tumours.) who Mr Adams has great admiration for, as he explained, “I can’t thank PACT enough for their support. This is not just about fundraising, this is my way of saying thank you to them for all their help.”

Jordan was diagnosed with an ATRT (Atypical teratoid/Rhabdoid tumour) in 2016 and has had several brain surgeries, resulting in 95% of the tumour being removed which was wrapped around his Cerebellar. It is his wish to see Jordan watch the exhibitions while touring as many cities and towns as possible to maximise their message around the UK.

Kevan started a ‘Go fund me page’ as it became apparent to him it would cost a substantial amount to finish

the track alone, which is currently being held four hours away from where their home is in Hillsborough, as no storage facility around them had the room to store it.

“We are not famous people; we are just a work-a-day family trying to get by, I just wanted to do something nice not only for Jordan but for all the children with cancer who seem to get overlooked. There is lots of awareness for adult cancers but not as much for children which surprises me. They have their whole lives ahead of them and it's hard to see it being cut short.”

Kevan explained. The rail way track is based on a small village in Perthshire called Car gill which is where Jor dan's heri tage comes from, it will include the steel works

and the Tay viaduct that runs over the river Tay.

If you wish to donate to this tremendous cause and help Jordan and his grandad reach their goal, you can find his go fund me page called “Jordan’s cancer awareness drive.” So, far the amount currently stands at £410, and they need a further £590 to reach their goal.

If you wish to see the final product as it makes its rounds up and down the country there will be no entry fee but there will be a chance to donate, with all the proceeds from the exhibitions going to PACT Sheffield.

Tougher licencing for dog owners and breeders

Dr Alan Billings, South Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner would like to see tougher licencing laws put in place for owners and breeders after the concerning increase in dog attacks.

In the past five years, the number of dangerous dog attacks has significantly increased, with 180 cases reported in the first six months of this year alone. The XL Bully caused 25% of these attacks.

The XL Bully is currently not on the dangerous dog list, but the police think it's high time that this particular breed of dog should be the latest added to the list, due to its strength, size and tendency

to turn violent at a moment’s notice.

But is the blame solely on the dog? Dr Alan Billings explained, “Any breed of dog could turn violent. It's sometimes the case of how the dog is treated and or brought up by its owner.”

He continued to say, “During the pandemic, the number of dogs nationally rose from 9 million to over 12 million, with many people buying dogs for the first time with no prior experience, a lack of socialisation and no access to dog training classes during that time. This doesn’t seem to be just a problem in South Yorkshire but is happening all over the country.”

He went on to say that he has written to the Association

of Police and Crime Commissioners expressing his concerns and are in direct contact with ministers. He would like to see a tightening up of illegal breeders who are breeding these dogs solely because of their violent characteristics and dog owners who show little or no understanding of how to care for a dog and or are unaware of the dangers of some of these breeds.

South Yorkshire Police Department would like everyone to be able to enjoy the green open spaces this summer and advice everyone to stay vigilant when approaching these so-called ‘gentle giants.’

RISING STAR TAKES ON 24-HOUR FITNESS CHALLENGE

Rising British motor racing star and Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity Ambassador, Rowan Campbell-Pilling, has completed a 24-hour fitness challenge, raising crucial awareness for the charity.

The event supported by over 200 people and hosted at Firehouse Fitness in Millhouses, Sheffield, ran for 24 hours from 8am Saturday through to 8am Sunday to raise awareness for The Children’s Hospital Charity.

Rowan, 16, who is keen to give back and continue his work with the charity, sported his race suit and helmet as he completed highintensity interval training, weight challenges, running and step activities.

With a number of Firehouse Fitness personal trainers and other guests running activities, the event was action-packed right until the end. Rowan was joined by other charity ambassadors including members of the Sheffield Giants American Football Team.

Rowan said: “What great company I had with The Giants. They’re so inspiring, training all day and joining a 24-hour fitness challenge straight after. They brought brilliant camaraderie to the challenge, and it’s been awesome training alongside them.”

Ambassadors were joined by their families and several staff from the Children’s Hospital

“Training whilst raising awareness for the charity was a win-win for me as I have to train four times a week to keep in peak physical condition for racing. It’s been fantastic to combine these two passions and a pleasure to raise awareness for such a worthy cause!”

Rowan has been competing in kart racing across the UK since the age of five. Winning a multitude of trophies during his career, he was the youngest-ever winner of the Daniel Ricciardo National Series, at the age of 14. Now as a 16-year-old, he is beginning to compete in the senior karting ranks in both Iame X30 Series and the Daniel Ricciardo Series.

Last weekend he proved himself again on what was a very hot and sunny Dorset day at the Clay Pigeon Raceway.

During the second day of racing, Rowan set the fastest lap on lap 13 of 17 and took the win unchallenged by over one second. Then he led the rest of the Grand Final unchallenged and as he crossed the finish line, the Sheffield schoolboy celebrated as he achieved a clean sweep of race wins at Clay Pigeon Raceway.

Rowan said: “The racing was fantastic, and I’m delighted with the clean sweep. It’s a great result to win this Daniel Ricciardo race weekend at Clay Pigeon where Formula 1 drivers have learned their craft too.”

In an exciting period of his career, not only rently testing F4 and took part in the Official ROKiT F4 British Championship Certified by FIA Test Day at Thruxton Race Circuit in

Sheffield buS ServiceS: ‘People power’ brings back lost bus services

Some bus services lost last year are returning, thanks to funding from the South Yorkshire Mayor Oliver Coppard, writes Julia Armstrong for The Yorkshire Post.

Daytime journeys on a total of 10 routes in South Yorkshire will return from Sunday, July 23. The mayor stepped in after bus services were hit by cuts last year, caused by the ending of pandemic funding to bus operators and the sudden closure of bus firm Powell’s.

The 35a, run by Cawthornes between Chapeltown and Thorncliffe Park, will make trips throughout the day Monday to Saturday, based on shift times.

Service and timetable information will be published ahead of the changes on Travel South Yorkshire’s service changes page: www. travelsouthyorkshire.com/ servicechanges

Information will also soon be available on Twitter @

TravelSYorks, at affected bus stops, in interchanges and via Traveline on 01709 51 51 51 (weekdays between 7am and 7pm and at weekends between 8am and 7pm.

Communities and politicians have been lobbying for the return of services, which were welcomed by two city MPs. Last week Sheffield Green councillors also celebrated the return of the 10 and 10a service.

Louise Haigh, MP for Sheffield Heeley and Labour shadow transport secretary, said: “This is a good day for people power and I’m pleased that Mayor Oliver Coppard has decided to use more than £2 million of his budget to restore these vital services and many others across South Yorkshire.

“But this is not a situation we should be in. We should not be beholden to private companies and allow them to cut routes and services, leaving passengers cut off and stranded.

“A Labour government will reform our bus networks for passengers. We will end the broken system and hand power and control to local communities. This will be the first step in the biggest reform to the bus sector in a generation and put communities firmly back in control of services they depend on.”

On the decision to restore the 32 bus service to communities in her Brightside and Hillsborough constituency, Gill Furniss MP said: “It is great news that Oliver Coppard, as South Yorkshire’s Mayor is able to restore some services cut by bus companies, including the muchneeded 32 service which local people were rightly angry about being removed.

“However, this government needs to do far more to back Oliver’s ambitious plans to restore service by giving him the support to help every community, particularly in Wisewood following last year’s cutting of the 52a.”

MP SUPPORTS CHANGES TO MIGRATION UK

Penistone and Stocksbridge MP Miriam Cates has joined a group of Conservative MPs from across the country who have put forward a radical plan to significantly cut the levels of net migration into the UK.

Under the plan, major changes would be made to the new post-Brexit points-based immigration system, including increasing the minimum salary and English language requirements for migrant workers and reducing the number of foreign students who are allowed to bring family members into the country.

The group of MPs - called the New Conservatives - were all elected since the 2016 Brexit referendum and focus on what they describe as the views and values of the people who voted Conservative in large numbers at the last election.

Speaking at the launch of the plan in Westminster, Miriam Cates MP said: "Breaking our addiction to mass immigration is the key to long term growth. It has asserted downward pressure on wages and living standards and upward pressure on housing and public services.

"I want to see British companies prioritising British workers, particularly our young people and veterans. For too long too many industries have been dependent on low-skilled, low-cost immigration and failed to invest in the skills and future of local people.

"Almost two thirds of people in the UK say that immigration is too high. Therefore we must honour our promise and dramatically cut net migration."

to avoid any disappointment, which you can do so by visiting, www.heritageopendays.org. uk.

The open days start from the 8th - 17th of September 2023 and be sure to take many

photos during these events and visitations, as they could well be used in the 2024 brochure ahead of next years’ Heritage days.

A modern tapestry exhibition by artist Grayson Perry exploring attitudes towards class has opened at one of the largest stately homes in England.

'The Vanity of Small Differences' exhibition features six tapestries inspired by 18th Century painter William Hogarth's A Rake's Progress.

It is running at Wentworth Woodhouse, in Rotherham, until 3 September.

Bosses of the Grade I-listed mansion said they hoped the exhibition would "inspire visitors to learn new skills".

The pieces, which are on display in four of the mansion's State Rooms, each chart a stage in the 'class journey'.

They were created in 2012 and elements of the tapestries were inspired by Perry's journey through Sunderland, Tunbridge Wells and The Cotswolds when he filmed a series for Channel 4 a decade ago.

How

Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Lockdown parties

I wonder if our readers spotted an article in one of the nationals that revealed that the conservative MP Bernard Jenkin is now under investigation as he hosted a lockdown party on the occasion of his wife’s birthday. About 10 people attended including the MP for Penistone and Stocksbridge Miriam Cates. I wonder if she would be honest enough to confirm or deny that this took place.

Our MP

Dear look local

Hope everyone has kept up with our MP this week. It seems she's no longer a conservative but a New Conservative (and possibly still a National Conservative ?)

While she is trying out new roles could I suggest she tries a week's paid work in social care? She would find out the reason why it's so hard to fill vacancies is nothing to do with levels of immigration but everything to do with low pay and poor conditions resulting from lack of funding by her own party's government......Oh hang on I get it.... she's not in THAT conservative party it's a New National one. Sorry.

Bolsterstone fayre

Dear All,

It would be much appreciated if you would put a report in the letters section something on the lines of the following:-

Thank you to everyone who attended the Bolsterstone Village Fayre on Saturday which made it the huge success that it was. Special thanks to the management and staff at Stocksbridge Co-op and Fox Valley for allowing us to sell raffle tickets and to the generosity of the shoppers who bought them. Winners will be notified and prizes distributed within the next few days. Thank You also to Neil at U.C. Build, Glenn at Instant Print and Dyson Funeral Service for their donations which allowed our young visitors subsidised donkey rides and play on the bouncy castles.

It was especially heartening to have so many young helpers setting up in the morning and clearing away after the event. They are too numerous to mention but our sincere thanks to all of them for their help which was invaluable and greatly appreciated.

Thank you once again from everyone at St. Mary's. Carol Webster and Kathryn Cooke.

Juxtaposition

Dear Look Local

I just had to write in to congratulate you on your inspired front page last week! A great juxtaposition. Let’s hope Miriam Cates MP will be going along to Sir Grayson Perry’s exhibition to view the work of a cross-dressing national treasure, here for the first time in South Yorkshire!

MY ARTIST'S WORLD

by

This is an ode to my greatest artists. Those who were to see the world in their own way. Vincent Van Gogh. Who had his demons. His pains. His yellow sunflowers. A joy for every day. Claude Monet. Who inspired others again and again.

However my favourites remain these three. A trio of masters. Now immortal. One being the genius that was Salvador Dali. Along with his compatriot Pablo Picasso. His art was unique. Beautiful.

Finally, I am to honour an American with fine observation.

He being Mr. Edward Hopper. Who makes good my inspirational three. Mr. Hopper was adored for his fine paintings of those in isolation.

So thank you, Mr. Dali, Van Gogh, Picasso, Monet, and Hopper. For all of your sensational Art. For all your paintings Proper. The End.

Police seize uninsured cars

without any insurance, including a highend electric BMW.

Sheffield North-west NPT said “It doesn't matter how new or old, or expensive or inexpensive, or even how green or not your vehicle is, if you don't have insurance or a licence to drive it, we will seize it!

We will also report you for the offence(s), meaning a minimum fine of £300 and 6 points on your licence plus the cost of getting your vehicle out of the compound, once you have got your licence or insurance sorted and paid for.

All in all, it's a very expensive business, so please make sure you insure your car and have the correct licence or meet the correct conditions of your provisional licence before driving.”

Discover Hillsborough

Discover the Charming Suburb of Hillsborough: A Rich Tapestry of History and Vibrant Living

Nestled in the heart of Sheffield, the suburb of Hillsborough beckons with its fascinating history and thriving community. The name itself pays homage to Hillsborough House, a grand structure built in 1779, which honoured the esteemed Earl of Hillsborough from County Down. However, it was not until the devastating Great Sheffield Flood of 1864, which claimed the lives of approximately 42 individuals in the immediate Hillsborough area, that the district began to recover and develop. The resilience of its residents and the burgeoning steel and engineering industries in Sheffield paved the way for the growth of suburban housing, eventually transforming Hillsborough into a large and flourishing suburb.

In 1889, Hillsborough was described in Kelly's Directory as a burgeoning district, with its roots firmly established in the city of Sheffield. The suburb witnessed a significant milestone in its development with the introduction of the electric tram in 1903. The arrival of this modern mode of transportation breathed new life into Hillsborough, connecting it to neighbouring areas and fueling its progress. Initially, the tram ran up to the top of Parkside Road and later expanded its reach to Middlewood in 1913. These advancements in infrastructure marked a turning point, setting the stage for further expansion and the creation of the road network that forms the backbone of present-day Hillsborough.

At the heart of Hillsborough lies its vibrant centre, known as Hillsborough Corner. Here, Langsett Road, Middlewood Road, Holme Lane, and Bradfield Road converge, forming a bustling hub that encapsulates the essence of the community.

Hillsborough proudly embraces its status as a shopping destination, with Hillsborough Corner serving as its commercial epicentre. This lively area boasts a diverse range of establishments, from well-known

retail chains such as Boots, Superdrug, and Wilko to charming independent shops offering a variety of goods, including household items and clothing. The local community is well-served with amenities such as butchers, greengrocers, and offlicences, catering to the needs of Hillsborough's residents. Visitors and locals alike can also savour an array of culinary delights at the neighbourhood's numerous restaurants, cafes, pubs, and bars, making Hillsborough Corner an inviting destination for all.

Hillsborough's allure extends beyond its commercial offerings. The district proudly showcases several landmarks that embody its rich heritage. Hillsborough Barracks stands as a testament to the area's historical significance, while Hillsborough House, now transformed into the Hillsborough branch library, showcases its architectural grandeur. Hillsborough Park plays host to the Hillsborough Arena, a venue that resonates with the community's passion for sports and recreation. Owlerton Stadium and Regent Court flats also add to the area's distinctive character. However, perhaps the most iconic landmark that shares both name and ...

...home with Hillsborough is the Sheffield Wednesday FC stadium, evoking the fervour and camaraderie of football fans across the region.

Hillsborough Park in recent years has become a music venue, hosting the ever-popular annual music festival, Tramlines. A 3-day event that returns this July. Arctic Monkeys recently enjoyed playing there over two nights to over 80,000 fans.

The Walled Garden in the park is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered and enjoyed. A notable relic from the past, the Hillsborough Baths (known formally as the Walkley and Hillsborough District Baths) stands as a testament to the suburb's commitment to community well-being. Constructed in 1926 by the esteemed Sheffield City architect F.E.P. Edwards, these baths were integral to the community's social fabric. The grand opening, presided over by the Lord Mayor John George Graves, marked a new era of leisure and vitality. Though the original baths have since been replaced by the Hillsborough Leisure Centre, the building itself found new life as the Rawson Spring public house, preserving its heritage and serving as a reminder of Hillsborough's past.

Education holds a prominent place within Hillsborough, with two primary schools serving the community. Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School on Ripley Street and Hillsborough Primary School on Parkside Road provide a nurturing environment for the young minds that shape the suburb's future. Hillsborough's spiritual landscape is enriched by two main churches. The striking red-brick Sacred Heart Church on Forbes Road stands

as a prominent landmark, while Hillsborough Trinity Methodist Church, situated across from Hillsborough Park on Middlewood Road, invites worshippers to find solace and community. Although smaller in scale, the Wadsley United Reformed Church on Carlton Road, formerly known as the Hillsborough Congregational Church, carries a unique charm, having been converted into luxury apartments. Additionally, the Hillsborough Baptist Church on Taplin Road and the Hillsborough Tabernacle on Proctor Place contribute to the spiritual tapestry of the suburb, preserving its historical and cultural roots.

Transportation infrastructure plays a crucial role in connecting Hillsborough to the wider region. Since its inauguration in 1994, Sheffield Supertram's north-western termini, Malin Bridge and Middlewood, have become integral parts of the Hillsborough landscape. At the heart of the suburb lies the Hillsborough Interchange, a bustling transportation hub that serves as a local nexus for buses and trams, conveniently located near Hillsborough Barracks.

Hillsborough embodies the spirit of a community that seamlessly blends its storied past with a vibrant present. Its captivating history, diverse shopping options, thriving industries, and an array of landmarks make it an ideal place to call home. Whether strolling through its bustling streets, enjoying a match at the Sheffield Wednesday FC stadium, or exploring its rich heritage, Hillsborough promises an enriching experience for residents and visitors alike. Discover the allure of this charming suburb and immerse yourself in the tapestry of Hillsborough.

Hillsborough Together...

Tramlines, what do YOU think?

Charlie, Loxley

“I am going this year, it’s only the second time I’ve been. It’s more of a social thing. I’m going with a group of friends”.

Jade, Stocksbridge

“I’m not I’m afraid, I’ve been a few times in the past couple of years. Obviously throughout covid I couldn’t go. It’s a great atmosphere. It was really good last year. I love the atmosphere its great and especially when you’ve got lots of different areas in Sheffield where it takes place as well, so a lot of people get involved.”

India, 20, Stocksbridge

Have you been to tramlines? “I have yeah. It was alright it’s not really my type of music.”

When asked if India was going again, she replied “No”.

Ken, 72, Penistone

“I’ve not been but my sons been and my grandchildren have been. I don’t think they’re going this year, but they all went last year.”

When asked if they enjoyed their time there Ken replied with “Yes”.

A recent addition to Hillsborough has been the development of Hillsborough Together. Led by Janine Lawson of the Hillsborough Tap this was set up originally as part of the Economic Recovery Fund to support the high street. The success of the project has been incredible, and they have quickly developed into a strong and trusted partner in the Hillsborough Area. The overall focus is the success of the high street and they have developed relationships with businesses across the area, this year has seen their efforts extended to focus on the businesses whilst also engaging with the local community. They provide a central link for residents, businesses and visitors to the area.

The aim is to increase footfall to the area and they have made several noticeable improvements such as street furniture, including benches and a Shutter Art project that has added a real vibrancy to the High Street.

Hillsborough Together are responsible for lighting up Hillsborough with Christ-

mas lights for the first time in 25 years and this year have worked with local area committees to have a Christmas Tree planted in Hillsborough Park, the lighting of which will be included in their annual Christmas Event.

Hillsborough Together have a close working relationships with local councillors, neighbourhood policing teams and the Local area committee, which means that they are well placed to ensure everybody is working together for the benefit of the area.

Janine Lawson said ‘we are really proud of what we have achieved over the past 12 months and it is great to see the high street thriving, we have lots of plans moving forward and we hope to start the next stage of our project in September. Hillsborough is a great community which has been forgotten about for a long time, the economic recovery fund allowed us to make our high street shine again and highlight to residents, businesses and visitors just how special the area is’.

The Management team of Lawrence, that man Adam Frith, ‘clock tower’ Andy Beal & Team Manager Dawn Woodcock are busy planning the pre-season, along with looking to recruit new players to the roster. ‘we are looking to bolster the squad with new players & some returning former players’ said skipper Frith, adding ‘the junior players added some real enthusiasm to the cause last time out, & we are looking to them again to develop into regular 1st team players’.

Tigers’ secure another win as their race against Peterborough was abandoned. The Tru Plant Tigers were leading 37-23 at the time of the stoppage with the result standing due to ten races being completed. Supporters had been treated to some exciting action in the first seven races - before the heavens opened up with a couple of sharp, heavy showers that seemingly came out of nowhere.

The Senior Leadership Team have set their sights on a top 4, play off place after a solid mid table finish last campaign, & there is no reason this cannot be achieved. ‘we are looking to build on the structures & systems introduced by Coach Lawrence last Year, & incorporating these into a tough pre-season will help us hit the ground running, come the first round of fixtures’ said Frith enthusiastically. Off the field, the shirt patches have nearly sold out as current sponsors renew & new partners are added, with more packages & opportunities available via the Club’s website or social media avenues, if there is further interest.

Training is scheduled to begin on Wednesday 12th July at Coal Pit Lane from 6.30pm, all players of any age or ability are welcome to join the community side, or even just to have a go & see if you enjoy it.

That saw conditions, and the racing, deteriorate and that was emphasised by the winning time of 60.75 in Heat One from Jack Holder compared to 67.37 when he took the chequered flag in Heat Ten.

Both sets of riders and managers agreed to abandon the race after the rain had made it dangerous for both sets of riders.

Australian born rider, Josh Pickering said, “It was unfortunate. At the end of the day we are professional sportsmen and we can ride in anything, but when you have four riders aiming for one spot it makes visibility an issue.”

Rich dashes to first

Richard Cottam of Penistone

Footpath runners showed a clean pair of heels to the field at the Midsummer Mad Dash organised by Valley Hill Runners. The challenging route of five miles rolls through woodlands around High Green. At the same race Suzanne McGill ran well to claim the prize for first over40 lady.

There was further success for Penistone at the Saunders Lakeland Mountain Marathon with brothers Tom and James Fryers winning the Wansfell class in a time of 6 hours and 4 minutes. Also competing in the same class were Steve Sanders and Liz Hutchinson who were 53rd in a time of 10 hours and 48 minutes.

There were two solo entries in the Carrick class from Penistone, Matt Womersly (26th in

10 hours) and Peter Gray (59th, 12 hours and 23 minutes).

On the parkrun scene Harriet Drouin was second in the ladies over40 category at the Festningen parkrun in Trondheim, Norway. There were first plac-

es for Sarah Walch (Marshall Drive), James Mumford (Temple Newsam) and Flynn Rogers (Shelley Junior parkrun). There were second places for Damian Kilpin (Marshall Drive) and Andrew Heppenstall (Penistone).

6 ON THE SPIN

Stocksbridge 1st XI 101 all out | Monk Bretton 1st XI

102-0

The 1st XI made the short trip into Barnsley to face high flying Monk Bretton. Skipper Jack Newton won the toss and elected to bat first. The 1st XI innings never got going and it was the same story as the previous weeks, with no batter getting in and putting in the hard work to make a score. The 1st XI were bowled out for a very disappointing 101 with Richard Marsden showing some fight at the end, scoring 28. Jack Newton 17 and Jack Murfin 19, were the only other two players to get into double figures.

The 1st XI needed early wickets, but unfortunately they were never in the game. Losing by 10 wickets with no bowlers able to put some pressure on the Monk Bretton batsmen. Another really disappointing day for the 1st who we look to end the losing

streak at home to Oughtibridge this Saturday.

Sprotbrough Cricket Club

3rd XI 135-8 (R Brearley

3-39, C Thwaites 2-35, P Hargreaves 2-42)

Stocksbridge 2nd XI 139-8 (M Hague 31, C Ralph 29, C Haywood 21*)

The 2nd XI made it 5 consecutive wins after a tense victory over Sprotbrough 3rd XI. The visitors won the toss and elected to bat, with Graves and Marsh starting well. Openers

Thwaites and Brearley bowled well with little luck, however after a double bowling change, it was Callum Haywood who finally broke the deadlock. Haywood dismissed Marsh for 21, before Paul Hargreaves joined in shortly, removing captain Graves for 41. Haywood and Hargreaves controlled the middle overs, bowling tightly and creating chances. Hargreaves struck again, before Thwaites picked up 2 quick scalps. After countless dropped catches, Sprotbrough man-

aged to climb past 120, before good late bowling pegged the visitors back.

Thwaites and Brearley finished off the innings well, with the latter stealing the show with 3 late wickets. A great team effort from the quartet of bowlers, restricting Sprotbrough to what looked like a chasable total of 135.

Stocksbridge's reply with the bat got off to a less than ideal start, losing opener Carr for 0 in the very first over. Wickets then fell at regular intervals, leaving the hosts floundering at 55-5. Matt Hague then propelled Stocksbridge closer to the finish line, ably supported by young Cam Illingworth-Ralph. Hague raced to 31 off just 25 balls, hitting 5 4s in the process, before holing out to mid on. Young Cam took on the challenge after losing his partner, hitting 6 4s on his way to his highest adult score. He was eventually bowled by Malloy, leaving Stocksbridge requir-

ing 30 with just 2 wickets remaining. Haywood and Hargreaves saw the lads home in style, showing no sign of nerves. Hargreaves provided a brick wall of resistance and Haywood blazed a quick fire 21 not out to see the lads to victory. Another great team effort with lots of people stepping up to the plate when needed.

5 wins on the spin sees the 2nds leap into the promotion places.

Stocksbridge 2nd XI 170-5 (J Hague 94 not out, J Carr 26) Wath 3rd XI 91 all out (R Brearley 3-10, C Thwaites 3-34)

The 2nds travelled to Wath and reached back to back cup semi finals! 6 wins in a row now for the 2nds, with another cup semi final to look forward to in late July! The 2nds are also the only division 7 side left in the cup, with the other 3 remaining sides all being top 5 division 6 teams.

Wednesday saw the Dragons Summer cup take place with Gary Finney declared winner with 40pts.

Saturday was Captains Day for this year’s captain Alec Cowling.

A day that started in wet and windy conditions with the annual flag raising at 9am, ended late into the evening with the prize giving ceremony.

The overall winner was Lee Hydes with a net score of 59. Lowest gross score was Danny Costello

with 69 and the best stableford score Gary Finney with 41pts. Nearest the pin winners were Peter Finney (10th), Steve Goodwin (13th) and Dave Buxton (18th in two)

In the ladies stableford, Heather Evans win with 33pts.

Fair to say a fantastic day was had by all at the club, where we also raised over £700 for this year’s Captain’s Charity – Sheffield Hospitals Charity (Palliative Care and Child Bereavement).

Oughtibridge beat the Witches

their second and final wicket on the pair’s last ball. The final pair of Renee & Liz were off the mark immediately, scoring steady runs throughout their four overs, including three boundaries for Liz. Oughtibridge finished 268/2.

three and four for Oughtibridge in the 10th and 14th overs with another two fast balls, both on a perfect line to smash the stumps and raise the bails high in the air. Whitley Hall Witches finished on 244/4.

The second match this season between these two teams was at home for Oughtibridge, where Whitley Hall Witches were invited to toss the coin and call; they won and elected to field first.

After a team trip to the Ashes at Edgbaston the Oughtibridge women were inspired by their England heroes to be the best that they could be! The regular Oughtibridge opening batting pair of Jane and Sian arrived on

the pitch ready and raring to get started. Whitley took their first wicket in the 4th over with an angle defying bounce of the ball which went swinging into the Oughtibridge stumps. The second batting pair of Claire and Sophie started steadily but were soon happily scoring runs, including two strong boundary shots for Claire. The Oughtibridge third pair, Hayley and Sue had a tough time at the crease but still managed to put some runs on the board despite the Witches taking

Edgbaston memories were at the front of the minds of many in ‘the Bridge’ team… namely the England women’s speed in the field and their composure under pressure. To random shouts of ‘Tequila’ remembered from the Ashes mid-match music, the Oughtibridge women walked confidently out into the field. The Oughtibridge bowling attack was undeniably strong, each Witches pair faced the same formidable quartet. Oughtibridge took their first wicket in just the 2nd over with a straight fast ball from Renee. In the very next over Sophie bowled brilliantly to force the batter to put the ball high, just outside the non-striker and with outstretched arms and at full sprint Hayley made the catch! The Oughtibridge women worked beautifully together in the field and certainly curtailed the Witches attempts at the boundary. Renee took wicket number

Another great win for the Oughtibridge women!

On the 9th July Oughtibridge War Memorial Cricket Club and

Oughtibridge Brass Band will be joined by Stocksbridge Women’s Cricket Team for a festival of friendly cricket. The Oughtibridge Under 13s team will also be playing, and the Brass Band will be playing their instruments and some cricket too! Everyone is welcome for drinks, cake, a raffle, the Greedy Greek food van and a fun day out for all the family, 11am start.
