Six postboxes for family and friends to write messages to deceased loved ones have been installed around Sheffield, Simon Thake reports.

The white boxes, located at cemeteries and crematoriums in the city, have been set up by a counsel-

Chloe Elizabeth Hill said she wanted to install the postboxes after the deaths of her mother and her closest friend.

LETTERS TO HEAVEN! The rise of Range Rover thefts in and around Sheffield

Ms Hill's mother died in 2018 after being diagnosed with terminal cancer, with her closest friend Katie Hawxwell, 39, also dying from the disease in December 2022.

Car thieves have been targeting this particular car for several years now. But why?

there is a Facebook page dedicated entirely to stolen Range Rovers/Land Rovers.

Hutcliffe Wood Crema-

Tinsley Park Cemetery

Ms Hill told BBC Radio Sheffield she was inspired by a similar scheme in a Nottinghamshire crematorium thought up by a nineyear-old girl.

"Even though I know the letters aren't actually going to heaven, I feel like it's nice to have that end point of posting the letter," Ms Hill said.

"It's a release and a relief, you've said what you want to say and you feel like

"I wanted my children to be able to write to their 'nannan' and for Katie's children to be able to write to their mum," she said.

"Sometimes it's easier to sit with your thoughts and write a letter, sometimes you can't quite vocalise how you're feelingyou could even just draw a picture, it doesn't have to be words."

Letters will be buried in the City Road Cemetery grounds after the boxes are emptied.

In the past week there have been at least three reported cases of Range Rover the s in the Stannington area alone, and the number keeps on rising not just in She eld but throughout the UK.

In the past three years, Range Rovers have topped the charts as the second most stolen car in the UK, with over 5,000 the s recorded in 2022, and it is reported that this gure could be smashed this year.

Range Rovers are an increasingly sought-a er vehicle abroad and can easily be shipped overseas, never to be seen again for a he y fee, the demand seems to be higher in Eastern European countries.

Or they will be sent to a chop shop where they can be dismantled within hours and sold for parts. e Range Rover the s are so high in the UK that

e situation is becoming greyer by the year and now certain car insurance companies are refusing to insure these cars due to the high-risk factor and they have seen a signi cant increase in premiums.

But on the lighter side, a Range Rover owner has been reunited with their car, a er the police found the car parked in a small village in Oxfordshire. But unlike them, most Range Rover owners aren’t so lucky.

e police advise planting a tracker on your car, using good quality wheel clamps, or anything that might deter these criminal car thieves and gangs from pro ting on your behalf.

Latest statistics show a 36% drop in bus usage since 2019 for concessionary passholders, sparking move to encourage eligible people to get out and about for free

SOUTH YORKSHIRE NAMED AS FIRST UK INVESTMENT ZONE

South Yorkshire could see 8,000 new jobs and an estimated £1.2bn of funding, after being named as the UK's rst Investment Zone, it is claimed, writes BBC reporter Andrew Barton.

In March Chancellor Jeremy Hunt said 12 new UK Investment Zones, would each receive £80m of government cash.

Announcing the rst zone at the AMRC research institute in She eld on ursday he said it had already secured a further £80m of private investment.

He said the zone was a "shining example" of how to drive UK growth.

At the development facility Mr Hunt claimed the rst Advanced Manufacturing Investment Zone would bring opportunity into areas "which had traditionally underperformed economically".

He said Boeing, Spirit AeroSystems, Loop Technology

MG ZS EV

and the University of Shefeld's AMRC institute had partnered to support the rst investment worth over £80m.

Jeremy Hunt with executives from Boeing at the AMRC's Factory 2050

Boeing, Spirit AeroSystems, Loop Technology and the University of She eld have partnered to support the rst investment worth over £80m

A spokesperson for HM Treasury said the Investment Zone would mean people from She eld, Rotherham, Doncaster and Barnsley would see fewer challenges in attracting nance and investment and more opportunities for new jobs and increased productivity.

e spokesperson said the project, co-funded by industry and government, with support from the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority and the University of She eld, would see the UK "at the cutting edge of avia-

tion research, development and manufacturing".

Mr Hunt said: "Our rst Investment Zone is a shining example of how we will drive growth across the country.

"It's already secured more than £80m of private investment, including backing from Boeing, and will help support more than 8,000 jobs by 2030."

Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, Michael Gove, said the announcement was "a signi cant moment for South Yorkshire".

" is will help level up the region, creating jobs and boosting economic growth," he said.

Business and Trade Secretary Kemi Badenoch said Boeing and its partners' investment in the new zone was a "major vote of con dence in our world-leading aerospace sector". Image HM Treasury

Gallery Showcases 'Sound of Silence' and 'Escape to the Sea' Exhibitions

Hillsborough - Cupola Contemporary Art is proud to present two captivating solo shows, 'Sound of Silence' by Ryoko Minamitani and 'Escape to the Sea' by Karen Sherwood. The exhibitions will be held at Cupola Gallery, located at 178-178a Middlewood Road, from July 15 to August 19.

The opening night will take place on Friday, July 14, starting at 7:30 pm, and is open to all art enthusiasts. The gallery's regular opening hours for the exhibitions will be from Monday to Saturday, 10 am to 6 pm.

Karen Sherwood, the esteemed owner and director of Cupola Gallery, will be showcasing her latest body of work titled 'Escape to the Sea.' Sherwood describes her paintings as expressive landscapes that evolve through the process of creation. Beginning as abstract marks and colours, the artworks gradually take form, reflecting her emotions and perceptions of the world. Given the unsettling times we live in, her paintings often exude a sense of turbulence or moodiness. Although based in Sheffield, a landlocked city, Sherwood finds herself consistently drawn to depicting images of the sea, even though the specific locations remain a mystery to her. She cherishes the connection between her paintings and the viewer when they recognize resemblances to familiar places. Sherwood's utilisation of colour evokes a mood, with her recent emphasis on a shade of blue that has been playfully dubbed "Karen Sherwood blue" by one of her customers. All of Sherwood's oil paintings will be available for purchase, ranging from miniature works measuring 5x7cm on paper to larger 150x80cm oil on linen pieces.

Ryoko Minamitani, an artist who has exhibited with Cupola Gallery for several years, will be hosting her first solo show with the gal-

lery. Minamitani's Japanese heritage shines through her expressive use of gestural mark-making with ink and paint. Her brush or pen strokes possess fluidity and freedom, and she employs a variety of materials to bring her vision to life. Whether working on a large or small scale, Minamitani's paintings exude energy while maintaining a sense of tranquillity through uncluttered compositions. Her technique, reminiscent of Tai Chi, harnesses the kinetic energy of mark-making as a form of meditative practice. The colour palette in her artwork further accentuates the serenity, with cool blues and purples dominating and flashes of greens and gold adding playful accents. All of Minamitani's works will be available for purchase.

When asked about her exhibition, Minamitani stated, "I believe that we can find relaxation through the 'Sound of Silence' in our busy lives. We can hear the 'Sound of Silence' more clearly in nature, away from our constant thinking. By applying a fluid technique with acrylic and pigment, my Sumi works depict the feelings I experience when I am listening to the 'Sound of Silence.'"

The term "Sumi" in Japanese refers to the use of black ink in art. Minamitani's Sumi works encompass a range of shades, from pure black to the lightest gradients achieved by dissolving ink in water.

Both exhibitions feature artworks that are available for purchase, providing visitors with an opportunity to own unique pieces of contemporary art. Cupola Contemporary Art invites art lovers and the local community to explore these remarkable exhibitions, which promise to offer diverse perspectives and evoke profound emotions.

Dear look local

Serious questions were raised last week in a letter about towns fund spending. Here's some more.....

If our allocation was part of an attempt to buy Tory support with public money, so called pork barrel politics, are we finding out what happens when it becomes clear the electorate don't swallow it ? (Sorry).

Will Miriam Cates MP and her husband continue to have a say on towns fund spending after her and her party's terrible and damaging years in control (and out of control ) finally end?

Why were they ever part of the 'steering' of this money anyway when an MP's role should be to address constituent's concerns independently ? My concern has always been why is so much being spent (if anyone finally gets round to it) on a 'hub' that no one knew we needed while numerous community buildings including the youth centre are tragically under used after Tory cuts in services?

Why isn't the spending allowed to go on funding people to work in the buildings we already have in badly needed provision for pre school and youth services ?

Looking after people properly, rather than moralising to them them through speeches to increasingly far right factions, might actually be the way to help the falling birth rate that according to Miriam Cates is our fundamental problem at her big speech to 'National Conservatives'. ...a couple of weeks before she became a 'New Conservative' Is it really still more than a year before we can have a general election ? As Captain Kirk used to say "Beam me up Scottie".

Underbank Plea

Please please please reconsider plans to "enhance" Underbank Reservoir.

Its a wonderfully peaceful place for wildlife and normal families to walk and chill.

If you "enhance" it to allow grown adults on childrens toys to access pathways it will be destroyed.

Just take a look , for example, at the Tissington Trail. Walkers are terrorised by grown people on childrens toys who believe the right of way is theirs.

Please keep these people away from Underbank.

Man discovers his musical voice

Scott Winwood has been living with Multiple Sclerosis since he was 23 but only now has he found the voice to express his feelings about his condition through the power of music.

Scott, who lives in Crookes, is supported by the St Luke’s Community team and is also a regular visitor to the Patient and Family Support services at the hospice’s Ecclesall Road South site.

It was there that he met musician Jamie Roberts who – along with musical partner Julia Waldron - leads weekly music sessions for patients.

Jamie and Julia are part of The Swan Song Project, a charity that supports anyone living with a terminal illness, planning their end stage of life or dealing with bereavement to write and record their own original song.

With Jamie’s encouragement and support, Scott discovered a previously untapped musical voice he admits he never even knew he had.

And he has now composed and recorded his debut song, The Absurdity of Hope, which is based on his personal MS journey.

“I’ve never done anything like this in my life, it was just something I’d never even

considered but I have thoroughly enjoyed it and it’s been good fun,” Scott said.

“My house is full of books and people have always told me I should write my story down but I just thought I couldn’t be bothered.

“But then I thought that writing lyrics might be easier and I found it was relatively easy once I set my mind to it – I had some ideas so it was just a case of sitting down and getting on with it.”

The words came first and then, with the support of Jamie, the music came next.

“I’m very happy with the result but I don’t know what will happen to it now,” Scott said.

“All the feedback is that people really like it so I am going to write more – in fact I have something in the pipeline now, but it’s more of a dance tune this time!”

On behalf of Jackie Kay, Helena, Ian and myself

I would like to thank all those who, despite the horrendous weather forecast, turned up to the Poetry Reading by Jackie Kay CBE under a gazebo in the nurturenature Healing Garden at Station House Wortley on Saturday.

Jackie is a gifted poet, novelist and playwright and an amazing performer of her work and folks were overwhelmed by the warmth of her personality and wonderful sense of humour.

Despite a brief, tremendous rainstorm all stayed dry. The gardens looked glorious and were described by one audience member as this wonderful little haven that’s on our doorstep.

Please look out in Look Local for details of Batik and Creative Writing Workshops in the Garden coming soon.

Thank you for your support.

Mayor to build plan to protect South Yorkshire’s wildlife and landscapes

Mayor Oliver Coppard has welcomed the news that the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) has been appointed the responsible authority for the Local Nature Recovery Strategy (LNRS), created under the Environment Act 2021.

Working with the councils in Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield and with the Peak District National Park Authority, SYMCA will now build a plan to protect and restore nature across the region.

South Yorkshire’s Mayor Oliver Coppard said: “South Yorkshire’s landscapes and natural environment are an unrivalled and precious asset. We desperately need to reverse the loss of wildlife, restore habitats and improve the natural environment of South Yorkshire for generations to come.

“The strategy we create, with our communities, will help us make the most of our natural capital. This is urgent work, with enormous opportunities; protecting and restoring our landscapes and wildlife will improve both our air and water quality, it will cut the risk of flooding, capture

carbon and it will improve the health and wellbeing of our communities through better access to the stunning natural environment we’re so lucky to have on our doorstep.”

The Department for Environment and Rural Affairs has appointed SYMCA the responsible authority for preparing the region’s LNRS alongside the following supporting authorities:

Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council

City of Doncaster Council

Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council

Sheffield City Council

Peak District National Park Authority

Natural England

Defra has allocated £241,000 to SYMCA to prepare the strategy, which is anticipated to take 12-18 months to prepare.

£60,000 raised for Bluebell wood THREE DECADES OF COMMONERS

CONT’D FROM PAGE 1...

Leah's passion for helping others shines through her fundraising efforts, and her compassionate nature has undoubtedly brought hope and relief to numerous children and their families during challenging times. These young individuals' accomplishments go far beyond their ages, reminding us that anyone can make a difference, regardless of their youth or experience. Their unwavering commitment to serving others and their innovative approaches to fundraising deserve the utmost admiration.

Chairman Susan Davidson, in presenting the Chairman's award, highlighted the outstanding efforts and significant impact that Shay and Leah have had on their respective causes. She expressed her gratitude for their tireless dedication and commended them for embodying the spirit of compassion and generosity that lies at the heart of our parish community.

The recognition bestowed upon Shay and Leah serves as a testament to the power of youth and the potential for positive change that resides within each and every

one of us. Their accomplishments remind us that it is never too early to make a difference and that a single act of kindness can create a ripple effect of goodness in our world.

As a community, we are incredibly proud of Shay and Leah and the incredible work they have done. Their commitment to making a difference in the lives of others sets a shining example for all of us. We are grateful for their compassion, determination, and unwavering dedication to making the world a better place

Susan Davidson spoke highly of the pair, “It is with great admiration and appreciation that we congratulate Shay and Leah on their well-deserved Chairman's award. May their incredible fundraising efforts continue to inspire others to join in their noble cause and bring hope and support to those in need. These exceptional young people have shown us that, indeed, the future is in capable hands.”

Mrs Davidson said.

The community group spent one glorious Saturday celebrating their 30 years preserving and maintaining the woodland engulfing Hillsborough.

Even though their 30th Anniversary isn’t until November the group decided to celebrate this achievement with a fun day. This included five hours of music playing, maypole dancing and a bug hunt. Which one of the organisers labelled as a “rousing success.”

around Wadsley and Loxley as it is the gateway to the further woodland in the North of Sheffield and is under constant threat of overgrowth.

The group’s main source of funding solely comes from the subscriptions of its members, and no outside investment. The group enjoys organising walks, holding talks in the church hall and researching the area’s rich history such as mining and military activities that took place in the area.

Alan Smith who has been a member of WALC for nearly 9 years said,

“We all value the place for different reasons, some have lived locally all-

tant, others enjoy studying the wildlife or just appreciate the wild feel of the place so close to the city.”

It is a tremendous achievement of any group lasting for over three decades, but it shows with like-minded and passionate people it can be done. If you live in the area and you think this could be something you’d be interested in, you can find the group on Facebook, with memberships of £5 individually or £8 as a household.

Sheffield hit-and-run driver jailed for killing pedestrian

months, BBC reports.

Mohammed Abdullah hit Sean Crowley when his car mounted the pavement in Regent Street, Sheffield, in the early hours of 22 August 2021 before speeding off.

The 58-year-old victim was taken to hospital but died a month later, Sheffield Crown

Abdullah, 26, of Limpsfield Road, Sheffield, pleaded guilty to causing his death by dan-

He was sentenced on Wednesday, when he was also banned from driving for six years.

Sean Crowley died in hospital a month after being run down

In a statement Mr Crowley's sister said: "In his life he had done some amazing things, like coming through the loss of our mother

at age 11, surviving cancer at 21 and, perhaps most amazingly, rowing across the Atlantic singlehandedly in a boat he built himself.

"For a long time, he held the record as the youngest man ever to carry out that feat. But he is best remembered as a true and muchloved friend, someone you could rely on, who was always ready to help out."

She said knowing Abdullah had fled the scene of the crash had made his death "infinitely harder to bear".

"An accident I can understand, but for the driver to callously decide to drive off is beyond understanding," she added.

South Yorkshire Police said CCTV footage of Abdullah's driving prior to the crash showed him driving the wrong way down a one-way street and nearly colliding with parked cars and bollards.

After fleeing the scene his car was found abandoned in Bolsover Road, Sheffield. He handed himself into police two days after the collision.

Sgt John Taylor said: "His driving was erratic, dangerous and ultimately cost an innocent man his life.

"The judge deemed the CCTV footage too shocking and disturbing to show in court, which demonstrates the gravity of Abdullah's actions that evening.

"There is no excuse or justifiable reason for his actions and I am pleased he has received a custodial sentence, though no jail term will ever undo the pain and grief he has caused to Mr Crowley's family and friends."

Over 380,000 kilometres of streams and rivers range from the becks, burns and rills rising in cooler mountain landscapes, to large, lowland rivers such as the Thames, Severn and Trent.

Across the four UK nations, famous rivers such as the Clyde, the Bann, the Tyne and the Wye bring cultural identity, landscape character and a window into a world of freshwater nature.

rivers and riversides are beautiful to look at, but how many of us stop to think about how they came to exist in the first place? In these stamps we celebrate our unique natural environment with a strong focus on the rich variety of creatures that live in and alongside our rivers.”

Royal Mail today revealed a set of 10 stamps that celebrate the diversity of birds, mammals, insects and fish that inhabit the UK’s rivers and streams.

The physical geography of the UK, coupled with its maritime position and high rainfall, have combined over geological time to create an extensive and diverse network of flowing waters.

This is such a wonderful way to celebrate the UK’s rivers and to send a message – quite literally – of why they are important.”

Two Local Teams, Valley Hill Runners and Kimberworth Striders, Unite for a Wednesday Night Summer Social Run, Followed by Pizza and a Pint: Embracing Unity in the Running Community Running is often seen as an individual pursuit—a solitary activity that allows individuals to push their limits and achieve personal goals. However, on a warm Wednesday evening in the heart of our local community, two running teams proved that running is not just about personal accomplishments, but also about fostering a sense of unity and camaraderie.

berworth Striders intermingled, creating a tapestry of unity and togetherness. The shared experience of pushing through the miles and embracing the beauty of the surrounding nature brought the runners closer, erasing the distinctions between the two teams.

Following the exhilarating run, the participants gathered at a local pub, where they indulged in the well-deserved rewards of their efforts—a slice of mouthwatering pizza and a refreshing pint. Laughter and animated conversations filled the air as runners, previously strangers, bonded over their shared passion for running.

Striders showcased that, beyond the superficial differences, the running community is a diverse tapestry of individuals who come together to support and inspire one another.

The Wednesday night summer social run served as a powerful reminder that running is more than just competition; it is an opportunity to connect, share experiences, and build lasting friendships. Regardless of the team vest one wears, all runners have a common goal—to challenge themselves, stay healthy, and enjoy the journey.

set aside our differences and embrace the shared joys of running. In a world that often seeks to divide us, this event sent a powerful message: no matter the colour of our vests or the teams we represent, we are all part of the same running community. It is a reminder that when we run together, we conquer the physical challenges and strengthen the bonds that unite us as human beings.

Valley Hill Runners and Kimberworth Striders, two prominent local running clubs, came together for a special event that exemplified the true spirit of the running community. Led by the passionate and dedicated Jayne Grayson, this event aimed to break down the barriers that often divide us and unite runners from all backgrounds.

The evening started with a leisurely group run through the picturesque trails that wind through the valley, with participants donning their respective team vests. As runners embarked on the route, the vibrant colours of Valley Hill Runners and Kim-

Jayne Grayson, the driving force behind this event, emphasised the importance of unity within the running community. "Running has the incredible power to bring people together. It doesn't matter what colour vest you wear or what team you represent. We are all runners and share a common love for the sport," Grayson said with a smile.

In an era when division and polarisation seem to dominate many aspects of our lives, events like this provide a breath of fresh air, reminding us of the power of unity and community. The Valley Hill Runners and Kimberworth

As the sun dipped below the horizon, illuminating the sky with vibrant hues, the runners raised their glasses to a successful event and to the unity they had discovered. It was a celebration of the strength that lies in coming together, transcending boundaries, and appreciating the diversity that makes the running community so vibrant.

The Wednesday night summer social run organised by Valley Hill Runners and Kimberworth Striders, under the guidance of Jayne Grayson, left an indelible mark on the participants. It served as a shining example of what can be achieved when we

Sheffield Shark'S anounce new Signing

Stocksbridge

Former Rossington man and new Park Steels signing, Jack Watson opened the scoring with some fine trickery before finding the back of the net. Watson would double the Steels’ lead and his tally for the game as he nodded in the cross from another summer signing, Luke Hogg. Rossington halved the deficit before the break as the

Steels’ goalie couldn’t do anything about the major deflection, which found its way into the bottom corner.

Stocksbridge would come out in the second half with a complete second 10, Ofoegbu re-established Park Steels’ two-goal advantage, before a superb freekick from Poole put the final in the coffin as

Stocksbridge convincingly ran out 4-1 winners.

This momentum was carried over into their second friendly as the Park Steels made light work of NorthEastern Premier League side, Maltby Main by beating the home side 4-1 with Rawson grabbing himself a brace in the process.

The first half was far from vintage for the Steels, as they ended the first half trailing by a single goal, but after 10 changes the tide certainly changed in the second half and Stocksbridge took control ending the night with an emphatic victory.

Park Steels manager Ian Richards was pleased with the result but also outlined that his pre-season is all about fitness and managing the minutes for the players, giving the chance for players to break into the first team and or impress Richards ahead of the new season.

Penistone continue their pre-season unbeaten

The Sheffield Sharks’ are thrilled to announce the signing of Jordan Ratinho for the upcoming 2023-24 season. Ratinho, returns to the team for his fourth season in a row, further strengthening their roster for the upcoming season.

Originally from Concord, California, Ratinho had an impressive collegiate career at the University of San Francisco, where he showcased his skills as a versatile shooting guard.

After a quick stint in Germany, Ratinho's professional career took off after he joined the Sheffield Sharks for the 2020-21 season. His impact was immediate, with his quickness, sharp shooting, and defensive abilities making him an integral part of the team's success.

Coach Atiba Lyons expressed his excitement over Ratinho's return, saying:

"Jordan is an exceptional player who brings a unique skill set to our team. He can shoot and is a dedicated defender. We are excited to bring him back to strengthen our core with another returning player who knows what it takes to win in this league."

Ratinho is eager to continue his journey with the Sharks, stating:

"I am honoured and grateful to be returning to Sheffield for another season. The city and the fans have always been welcoming to me, and I can’t wait to get back out there. I know the landscape of the league and what is expected of me at the Sharks, returning with Bennett will help us hit the ground running at the start of the season."

Ratinho’s returns fortifies the Sharks line-up as the second announcement of the summer, alongside Bennett Koch.

The Church kicked off the new campaign with three pre-season victories and raised £250 for charity.

The first of the three matches saw Penistone host the world’s first, Sheffield FC but despite Sheffield being in a higher division Penistone Church gave a good account of themselves as they saw off the city boys in a resounding 3-1 victory.

For long periods of the game, both teams looked destined for a share of the spoils after Cameron Simpson equalised for the Church. Two late goals on either side of a minute – Nathan Keightley and Alfie Bakes with the killer blow, kicking off the new pre-season with a well-deserved victory.

Wednesday the 12th of July saw Penistone’s development team travel to Parkgate FC where they ran out 2-1 winners with goals from Owen Kelly and Anthony Brown, despite Parkgate scoring late the - two goals were

enough for Penistone to record their second victory of the week.

Penistone Church Manager, Steve Lenthall has had nothing but praise for how his players have begun preseason training,

“They’ve all been very keen, we told them what was expected at the start, and they’ve bought into it. their fitness is looking good, and they’ve been a credit to themselves and the club, I am proud.” Mr Lenthall said.

The Church finished the week off with a charity match against Athersley Recreation, in what is known as the Purdie Cup, named after Penistone Church player Reginald Purdie, who lost his battle with Leukaemia in 1965 and the club has hosted this charity match ever since with all the proceeds from the match going to Western Park Hospital and the Air Ambulance.

Penistone ran out convincing 8-3 winners with Nathan Keightley and

Wayne Hughes both grabbing braces in the process.

Penistone Church has two remaining friendlies left - hosting both Brighouse Town and Worsborough Bridge Athletic before their curtainraiser against Golcar United on the 29th of July.
