CAR OPEN DAY RAISES £1,000 A VARIETY of classic vehicles gathered at Deepcar Autobodies in a bid to help a fellow petrolhead raise funds for the Teenage Cancer Trust.

Customer Connor Dixon has terminal cancer and has created a ‘bucket list’ where he gets to ride in 100 beautiful cars and for each ride he gets, he donates £5 to the Teenage Cancer Trust on their behalf, raising £500 in the process. David Burkinshaw of Deepcar Autobodies heard about Connor’s cause and decided to help with a special fundraising open day on Sunday and they attracted 26 cars, raising £1,000 in the process.

BUCKET LIST: Connor Dixon is looking to ride in 100 vehicles and ticked a few more off on Sunday.

UNSLIVEN BRIDGE LISTED UNSLIVEN Bridge has been saved for future generations following the recent approval of an application for Listed Status, submitted by local Labour Councillor Richard Crowther.

Residents had previously expressed concern about the future of the historic local structure due to previous proposals to demolish and rebuild the bridge as part of the Streets Ahead Project, which has rejuvenated the street scene across Sheffield and Stocksbridge. Listening to these concerns, Sheffield City Council had already committed to retaining and strengthening the bridge in order to retain both its appearance and utility for future generations. Commenting, Richard said: “I am absolutely delighted that Historic England have accepted my application to have Unsliven Bridge added to the List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. This grants additional protections to the bridge in addition to the strengthening work undertaken by Sheffield City Council.” Councillors Richard Crowther and Julie Grocutt on Unsliven Bridge.

Aggravated burglary in Silkstone Common – CCTV released DETECTIVES investigating a reported aggravated burglary in the Silkstone Common area of Barnsley have now released CCTV images of individuals they would like to identify as part of their ongoing inquiry. At around 3.15am on Tuesday June 13, it is reported that four people broke into a property in Moorend Lane, Silkstone Common, while the occupants were asleep. The four people, who are described as being men in their late teens with their faces covered, are then reported to have assaulted the occupants – a man and woman in their 30s. The group then left the house empty-handed. Detective Sergeant Debra Renwick from the Force Crime Unit said: “Extensive enquiries have been underway since this incident was reported to us in June. “We issued a public appeal for witnesses in the days following the burglary, but unfortunately did not receive any information that could help us identify the individuals responsible for this attack.

“Our CCTV enquiries have revealed that there were actually six people outside the property in Moorend Lane for a short while before the four men forced entry to the house. We believe that there were five men and one woman, as illustrated in one of the images. “The couple in the house were injured, but it could have been far nastier and those involved need to be caught. “We appreciate that this incident happened several months ago now and that the CCTV images aren’t great, but we’re hoping the distinctive clothing of some individuals may jog someone’s memory about the incident. “If you think you know who might have been involved in this incident, please contact police and remember you can always give information anonymously via Crimestoppers if you don’t want to speak to officers directly.” Please call 101 quoting incident number 100 of 13 June 2017. You can ring Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Local Deputy Mayor and fellow Town Councillor Julie Grocutt added: “It is wonderful to know that Unsliven Bridge is now Listed, and rightly recognised as the important local structure it is. I would like to thank all those local people who use and love the bridge, and who have supported its retention.” The Historic England report confirming the new Grade II Listed status of the Unsliven Bridge noted that it is a well-designed and executed bridge, constructed of local gritstone. It adds that the bridge witness to the growth of traffic as the Industrial Revolution transformed this part of the country. Richard continued: “Special thanks should go to the Stocksbridge and District History Society for safeguarding the local historical records which have contributed to the listing of this structure. It is vital that our community’s industrial and built heritage are safeguarded and cherished for future generations.” The listing for Unsliven Bridge and accompanying reports can be found on the Historic England website at www.historicengland.org.uk.

Pop-up museum a huge success

Claire Neilson and Richard Bradshaw of Liberty Steel, Dennis Pindar of Stocksbridge History Society, Stocksbridge Mayor Cllr Keith Davis and Amanda Holmes of Dransfield Properties. FOX Valley teamed up with Liberty Speciality Steel and the Stocksbridge and District History Society last week to host a temporary pop-up museum in celebration of 175 years of the steelworks in Stocksbridge and it was a huge success attracting hundreds of visitors. The two-day event took place on Thursday November 2 and Friday November 3 and was visited by hundreds of people including locals, Stocksbridge Mayor Cllr Keith Davis, ex-steelworkers and current employees of Liberty Steel.

The event also housed a cinema corner where heritage films including “Steeltown” were screened over the two days. There was also a children’s art competition to design a new front cover for the Fox Magazine. Daisy Hardy, aged seven, was the winner of the children’s design competition. Daisy said: “I’m really excited to have won the design competition and I had lots of fun at the pop-up museum in half term”.

The event took place in the vacant unit at Fox Valley’s Independent Quarter over two floors and had many local artefacts and Fox’s Steelworks memorabilia on display brought by the Stocksbridge and District History Society.

Fox Valley manager Annabel Plumtree said: “We really enjoyed hosting the heritage event along with Liberty Steel and the History Society. It was great to see so many local people meeting up with old friends and children visiting to learn about their local heritage.

Liberty Speciality Steel also curated displays at the event which included an insight into the exciting future of the thriving industry in the local area and free commemorative coins to mark the occasion.

“We chose Daisy as the winner of our design competition because we loved the colours she used- it reminded us of the vibrant orange colour of the steel as it is being forged!”

Scrooges given opportunity to ignore Christmas market FOR the eighth year, a Sheffield not-for-profit organisation is holding its annual Christmas Market. Based in Hillsborough, the Burton Street Foundation began hosting the family friendly festive event in 2009, and it has grown in popularity and size ever since. There is a packed schedule of entertainment, a wide range of food and drink, and around 40 traders selling artisan gifts and crafts. They’re expecting this year’s market to be the biggest yet. With brass bands, mulled wine and festive fun for kids and adults alike, it’s the perfect day out for those ready to kick start their festive season. It’s also an absolute nightmare for those who can’t be doing with all that festive rubbish. That’s why, for the first time, the Burton Street Foundation is offering just the fix. Tucked away in a quiet corner of the market, Humbug Hall is the perfect place for the family misery guts. Dubbed ‘Scrooge crèche’ by the organisers, it’s thought to be the first facility of its kind. A carefully selected range of activities are being planned, from chairs and stools to peace and quiet. “We’re thinking of getting a few magazines in.” said Humbug Hall

organiser Stuart Ritson. “Maybe some woodworking mags, perhaps classic motorbikes, or that one about football. I wanted to wheel the telly in and put the racing on, but I don’t think there’s an aerial socket. “It’s near the bar so you can get a pint, and the turkey sandwiches will be pretty easy to get to”, he continues, “but once you’re in Humbug Hall and the door’s closed behind you, you’re safe.” The Christmas Market is the largest fundraising event on Burton Street’s calendar. On the day it’s run by volunteers, and funds are fed back into the organisation’s work, providing services for people with learning disabilities. This year the foundation has agreed to match the income, so all funds raised from the market will be doubled and spent on resources across the organisation. “Last year’s market raised almost £2,000.” says Clare Mappin, Managing Director. “Every penny of that was used to improve the work we do.” “In the new year we’re looking to invest in equipment, which is why we’ve pledged to double whatever the Christmas Market raises. We’re in desperate need of

new items across all the services we run.” “The list is quite long.” She continues; “There are simple items such as art supplies and musical equipment used in our creative sessions, and there are the more specialist items such as hoists and lifts, and the sensory equipment used by adults and children with autism.” When asked about Humbug Hall, she laughs. “It’s not really been much to do with me. I like Christmas.” “You’d have to ask the miseries!” “It’s just a quiet room.” says Stuart. “There’s not much of a plan. We’re raising funds so there’s a raffle, but it shouldn’t be too exciting. The prizes are just what we could find around site.” “A blank VHS cassette, some copier paper, a moving and handling course with Phil; stuff like that.” Humbug Hall will run alongside the Burton Street Christmas market, 11am to 4pm, Sunday November 19. If Christmas isn’t your thing, be sure to check it out. Learn more about the Burton Street Foundation on Facebook or Twitter, or on their website at www.burtonstreet.org.uk

High Green church seeks funding help THE parishioners of St Mary’s RC church are rallying after the shock of the latest damage and break in to their quiet church. But now they face big bills just to protect their church from further vandalism, abuse and break-ins. The high cost of repairing five stained glass windows is mostly covered by insurance but now the parishioners have to find an extra £5,000 just to put in

even more protective measures around the property.

pened is an affront to churchgoers and a disgrace.

All the windows now need to have plastic sheeting to prevent more brick attacks and the brute force of entry used last time. More CCTV is also needed.

If anyone wants to help raise the money now needed for the extra protective measures, there’s a website for donations at https://www.justgiving.com/ crowdfunding/stmaryschurchhighgreen

The parish still has a big debt from earlier protective measures and the recent improvements to the church itself. Most people around High Green seem to think what has hap-

Deacon Bill Housley Park said: “Every little will help us protect our church from these violent and evil attacks that have been going on for so long.”

Ministers offer assistance to help re-open Burncross Post Office ANGELA Smith, the MP for Penistone and Stocksbridge, has taken the fight to re-open Burncross Post Office all the way to the House of Commons.

“I fully understand the points she made about the local area having many older people who would find it difficult to travel to Chapeltown or High Green, particularly given the limited public transport in the local area.

In a specially called debate to discuss the issue, the MP laid out the story for Ministers. She explained how, despite the post office being successful and profitable all the time it operated from the Cost Cutter store, the Co-op has decided that it will not operate a postal service from their revamped store when it opens next month.

“I will certainly work with the Post Office and the hon. Lady to redouble efforts to find an alternative site for the post office service her residents deserve. I am aware that the Post Office met the hon. Lady to discuss the matter and that it has also met local councillors.”

Unfortunately this has left Post Office Counters Ltd, which wants to maintain a post office in the area, without a home for the service.

After the debate Angela commented: “I am delighted by the response from the Minister. She showed she understood the need for a Post Office in Burncross and she shared my disappointment at the Co-op’s lack of enthusiasm in having a store in their premises. I will certainly be taking up the Minister’s offer of help to return a post office to the area.

In response to Ms Smith’s request for Government support, Margot James ,the Minister for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, said: “The hon. Lady (Angela Smith) spoke passionately about her concerns for post office services in the Burncross community.

“One thing I am sure about is I will continue working to get the residents of Burncross a post office back in the area.”

The children who receive reader, writer and mathematician get to wear new snazzy T-shirts for the whole week, during lesson times. This has been a real incentive for the children to do that little bit extra to really impress their teachers. Achieving the reader, writer and mathematician award really means a lot to the pupils as not only do they feel very proud of their achievements, but wearing their brightly coloured T-shirts helps to build their self-esteem, confidence and their love for learning. “It makes me feel proud,” commented Mayzie in Year Two. “I get excited when we find out who it is going to be,” added Jenell. The teachers also think that these awards are great. Miss Brook said: “It’s great seeing the children move so proudly around school in their new t-shirts.”

to take over. Make sure you avoid the distress this can cause you and your loved ones. I know that planning for the future is a very personal matter. Not everyone is able or wants to travel to an appointment in town to sort out their affairs. I can visit you at a convenient time in the comfort and privacy of your own home to discuss your circumstances. My visit and consultation is completely free and you are under no obligation

to do anything. If you decide to make any arrangements you can be safe in the knowledge that all my professional services and work are fully insured and Collective Legal Solutions are members of the Society of Will Writers, so all my clients are assured of being fully protected at all times. All my clients (and their families) that I have helped in the past have been very happy with my services and tell me they have gained great peace of mind knowing that they have sorted everything out.

Jane came to see my parents to help them protect the family home from any future care fees. She really made us all feel at ease, especially my parents. We had no idea what we could do to protect Mum and Dad. Having set up trusts and Lasting Power of Attorney’s, Mum and Dad can get on with their lives without worrying, knowing everything is now in place. Thank you Jane!

Many thanks to Rev James Grayson for the comforting service and to Peter and staff at Dysons for the efficient arrangements.

THIRD TIME LUCKY FOR TAYLOR

Pic: T Wood LAST Monday in Chesterfield saw the presentation evening for the North Midland Time Trial Series sponsored by bike store J E James of Sheffield, Rotherham and Chesterfield. Winner of the Single Carriageway Competition was Dan Taylor of Birdwell Wheelers. After finishing second for the last two years he finally achieved top spot by just one point! The team competition also went to Birdwell Wheelers whose three-man team was Dan Taylor, Trevor Mayne and Paul Mason. Tom Booth, also of Birdwell Wheelers, was the top junior in the same competition. On Sunday Chris Jenkins, Tony Lodge, Steve Myatt, Dave Scargill, Rob Parkes, Roger Holmes, Phil Adams and Christine Minto completed a 60 mile ride to Thorne and back. This week the club’s Sunday run is a 50 mile flattish ride to Firbeck meeting at 9am Brewers Fayre roundabout, Wombwell. Visitors are welcome. More details on this and all the above can be found on the club’s new website. http://www.birdwellwheelerscyclingclub.co.uk

Chapeltown trio represent Yorkshire CHAPELTOWN Hockey club had three of their members selected to play for Yorkshire in the England Hockey Masters Cup. Dave Critchlow, Antony Wyatt and Mike Henderson played for Yorkshire against a combined Cumbria/Lancashire/Northumberland team in Carlisle on Sunday November 5. Dave kept a clean sheet in goal and Antony scored a goal in the 6-0 win. Meanwhile, a club coach introduced hockey to local kids at Stocksbridge Community Leisure Centre’s half term Sports Camp.

Local Sport low markers) are next closest and the ladies tees (red markers) are generally closest to the green. This competition had each individual starting from white on the first hole, yellow on the second and red on the third and continuing through the round.

Dynamic forward Lauren Turner was forced off injured as the home side stepped up a gear and they got one back on 70 minutes, despite protests for a clear shove on Oughtibridge centre back Katie Denton in the build up.

As well as testing the golfer’s skill, their memory was also tested in remembering which tee they should use. Third place went to best handicapped golfer James Walton on nett 65. In second place came Pete Westhead also on nett 65. The winner was Steve Page with a two under par 64. Wednesday was the second Dragon’s Christmas Cracker and Winter Cup Competition. There was a good turnout and great scoring on a very autumnal day. The top seven finishers were only separated by five points.

Coran Wright was brilliantly positioned to make a great save from a 10 yard snap shot and it became one way traffic at the end but defenders Kirsty Walton, Chloe Rodgers and skipper Abigail Towns refused to be beaten as the War Memorial Ladies held out. On Remembrance Sunday there will be the usual parade from the Church of the Ascension to the War Memorial Ground at 11.45 for a service at 12 noon, which will then be followed by the Ladies hosting Kettering Town Ladies at 2pm. Refreshments will be available and everyone is welcome on this important day for the club.

In third place came John Sawdon on 38 points. John Methley was second with a great 41 points. One of our more senior players, ex-Dragons captain Peter Dickinson finished in first place with a magnificent 42 points. Well done to Peter who now heads the leader board in the Winter Cup.

Church hit lastminute winner

Saturday September 28 was round one of the Club Winter Cup and the weather surely lived up to the winter tag. It was very windy in the morning and got worse through the day.

ON Saturday, a last-gasp goal was needed for Penistone Church to see off Maltby Main in the Toolstation NCEL Premier Division.

It was no surprise when the top three players had an early start. Third place went to John Wood on 35 points. Second was Steve Clayton on 36 points. First place went to Pete Hodkin with a great score under such poor conditions of 38 points.

Kieran Ryan came to the aid of Church with a stoppage time winner. Keeper Adam Rhodes is also worth a mention after a man of the match performance between the sticks, saving a penalty.

Church manager Ian Richards summed up: “A really satisfying three points today, arguably this was Sunday October 30 was a pro’s prize Stableford our most all round performance and result in the competition played under much calmer conditions. way that we constructed that win. WINTER CAR CHECK

With winter approaching, a little bit of maintenance could see your vehicle through the worst the weather has to offer.

Falling temperatures and poor weather leads to the number of breakdowns more than doubling throughout winter.

4. Check the condition of your tyres

“Check tyres for pressure and tread depth,” says Miller. “We recommend a minimum of 3mm depth during the winter, compared to the legal minimum of 1.6mm, as this gives better grip.”

Here are 10 steps the AA have provided to help you and your car get through the cold.

You could also look at changing from summer to winter tyres, as these also offer increased group in snow slush or ice.

1. Get your car serviced

5. Clean your lights

2. Check the battery

Check that all lights, indicators and rear reflectors are clean.

3. Top up engine coolant with antifreeze Engine coolant should be a 50/50 mix of water and antifreeze.

6. Wash your windscreen and wipers “Run your finger down the wiper blades to check for nicks and tears,” says Miller. “Check for any chips in the

windscreen, as these can grow in the cold weather. Also touch up any chips in the bodywork as the salt deposits on the road will attack these.” 7. Prepare for longer journeys 8. Carry a winter car breakdown kit This should include a shovel, torch, blanket, hi-visibility vest, screenwash, food and drink supplies, scraper and de-icer, and snow grips for your shoes in case you need to walk to safety. And don’t forget a fully charged mobile phone. 9. Check your cover Comprehensive breakdown cover is crucial at this time of year and will give you the peace of mind of knowing you won’t end up stranded

Under strength Pigs slump to heavy defeat

STEELS COME OUT ON TOP IN FIVE-GOAL THRILLER

Aireborough 52-12 Stocksbridge WITH no fewer than nine regular players un- and help with the development of amateur sport available, a makeshift Stocksbridge RUFC first in the local community. First race is at 8pm and team were soundly beaten 52 - 12 at Airebor- everybody is welcome. ough RUFC last Saturday and have slipped to 12th in the table. Apart from the customary try from Ben Brown and a well deserved five-pointer from Tom Spencer, there was little to cheer as Aireborough capitalised on a lack of cohesion, racking up seven tries, six conversions and two penalty goals in a generally one-way affair. Debutants Josh Stolten and Will Blackwell both did well, whilst half back pairing of Tommy Hughes and Bryn Evans did their best.

VERTICAL • VENETIAN • ROLLER • ROMAN • PLEATED • VELUX

3 easy steps...

There was also a long overdue return for veteran forward Nigel Dowkes, who added some much missing steel to the pack. A disappointed head coach Gam Kassim summed up the performance saying: “I can’t fault the attitude of the 19 lads that put a shirt on today and I was really pleased with the effort they put in, but unfortunately effort alone won’t get us the top half finish we’ve targeted this year. “After the win at Knottingley a fortnight ago, I thought we’d put last year’s problem of availability for away games behind us, but it doesn’t look like we have. The most frustrating part of today was that although Aireborough were enthusiastic, they were no better than us and if we’d have travelled with a full-strength squad I’m adamant that we would have won.”

Stocksbridge PS 3-2 Kidsgrove By David Bradley

Lumsden scored twice and Brodie Litchfield got the third.

STEELS emerged as winners in an action packed game at Bracken Moor. The home side went three up within 39 minutes. Hotshot Joe

Steels were in control, until the referee sent off George Grayson for what seemed a great tackle. France got one back before half time for Kidsgrove and after the break, the referee levelled the

sides up when he sent off Beaumont for an elbow within five minutes of the restart.

Stocksbridge must now look to the comfort of home, as they entertain newly promoted Hemsworth at Coal Pit Lane this Saturday.

Kidsgrove scored in the 78th minute when Malbon struck from distance. But it was too little to late as the Steels held on for a 3-2 win.

On a lighter note, the Pigs are holding a Race Night on Saturday November 11 at their clubhouse on Manchester Road, when you’ll get the chance to have a flutter, dance the night away
