NORTH SHEFFIELD REMEMBERS THERE were services of remembrance throughout north Sheffield on Saturday and Sunday as those who passed away in military service were remembered.
The usual parade was well-attended at Stocksbridge clock tower and Oughtibridge War Memorial sports club also paid their own tribute.
The cenotaphs at Stannington and Bradfield were also host to a well-observed silence and Ecclesfield Parish Council held a service in conjunction with the Royal British Legion at the Parish Council Memorial Garden on Sussex Road. The local clergy and representatives from local groups also took part in the service and parishioners were invited to attend.
REMEMBERED: People gather at the clock tower garden in Stocksbridge and at St Nicholas’ Church in Bradfield.

Chapeltown Library celebrates 30-year anniversary A LOCAL library marks its 30th anniversary this month hosting a celebration coffee morning with the Lord Mayor of Sheffield and local school children, as well as a number of events throughout the next few weeks. The celebration coffee morning was on Tuesday November 14 and gave an opportunity for visitors old and new to have a get together, meet the Lord Mayor and enjoy the entertain-
ment from Ecclesfield School’s choir and band. There was a display of books, CDs and films from 1987 as a reminder of what was popular in the library 30 years ago. Other highlights from the month of events include ‘Reading Aloud – a Christmas Carol’ with staff reading Charles Dickens’ seasonal story over four Mondays from November 13.
There will also be a Christmas celebration with Chapeltown and High Green schools with children performing seasonal entertainment on December 8.
“The library is at the heart of this community, and it’s great to see how the range of activities and services has grown since the 1980s. “The events on offer over the next few weeks really show that local libraries have something for everyone, whatever your age.”
Councillor Mary Lea, Cabinet Member for Culture, Parks and Leisure, said: “I’m delighted we’re celebrating thirty years since Chapeltown Library opened its doors to the local community.

Joanne Higgins By Catherine Lewis AFTER 10 fulfilling years, Principal Joanne Higgins is bidding a warm farewell to her fellow colleagues and students at Penistone Grammar School ALC (Advanced Learning Centre). After taking over the role of Principal from Glynis Gower, who retired in the summer of 2007, Ms Higgins led the school through its transition from the former building into the brand new ALC in 2011, and has brought the school from its previously “satisfactory” Ofsted status in March 2006 to a “good” Ofsted status in October 2013, and following the most recent inspection in October 2017, it continues to be “good”. March 2017 presented a new challenge for the school; with the fight for fair funding. Ms Higgins led the campaign; reaching out to parents, the council and media, appearing on Look North, ITV News, and in The Guardian newspaper, in order to get the school’s voice heard. Due to her determination and hard work, the campaign was a success, and the school is now set to receive the funding it deserves. In her final week, she has described her role as a “privilege”, and commented, “It’s been wonderful to be able to come along to Penistone, a school that wasn’t performing very well at all, where students weren’t realising their full potential, to make a difference, so that now we get the very best examination outcomes.” She added that she believes she is “leaving a legacy of an incredibly good school that will
continue to go from strength to strength.” After expressing her love for the “special” school community, she stated she’s going to miss the students and staff more than anything else. “The people make the place,” she said. “Education isn’t just about exams; it’s about supporting other people.”
Ends This Sunday
Special leaving assemblies took place for all year groups in the school on Thursday November 9, in which students expressed their gratitude and gave their best wishes to Ms Higgins.
Limited Offer
“Ms Higgins has been an asset to the school,” proclaimed Year 13 student Tom Collings. “We thank her from the bottom of our hearts, and hope she enjoys her future career.” So, what’s next on the horizon? Ms Higgins’ next job is situated in the West Midlands, where she’s taking on the role of Chief Executive Officer of the Dudley Multi-Academy Trust. She says she’s looking forward to taking on the new challenge, to help even more students thrive. Penistone Grammar School will be led by Mr Paul Crook starting on Monday November 13, who will no doubt be kept busy with plans to extend the existing building in the near future, in order to accommodate an extra 50 students per year, starting next year. Ms Higgins has bright hopes for the future of the school. She believes it has the potential to earn an “outstanding” Ofsted status, and also states she “will watch with great interest to see what will happen at Penistone,” the school that has no doubt earned a place in her heart.

Pudsey helps out at Paces PACES, the Sheffield charity and school which supports children, adults and families with motor disorders, has been chosen by BBC Children in Need to receive a grant of £80,629 over the next three years. The grant will be used by the organisation to support children aged between six months and three years with cerebral palsy to encourage them to become more independent, have better community and become more mobile. Paces, based at High Green, was founded in by parents of children with cerebral palsy and has worked ever since to support those living with neurological conditions. The charity offers innovative conductive education programmes to help transform their lives. Dr Spencer Pitfield, Paces Chief Executive, said: “Having the support of BBC Children in Need is an exciting milestone for Paces and our nationally-recognised work to support chil-
dren, young people and their families living with cerebral palsy. “The grant will allow us to continue, and extend, the help we have been proud to provide over the past 20 years and I look forward to seeing its impact in the months and years ahead.” BBC Children in Need funding relies on the energy and commitment of thousands of fundraisers and supporters across the UK who donate their time and money to support the appeal. Whether it’s cake sales, wearing pyjamas to school or having a song and dance, every penny of the money raised goes towards supporting projects across the UK. All grants go to projects working with children and young people living in the UK who may be affected by homelessness, neglect, abuse or poverty, or those who have faced challenges in their lives such as serious illness, disabilities and psychological disorders.

Birch bashing on Wharncliffe Heathlands SHEFFIELD University Conservation Volunteers and Wharncliffe Heathlands Trust will join forces to bash birch on the Wharncliffe Heathlands Nature Reserve on Saturday November 25. Local volunteers are welcome to join the party. Birch bashing involves cutting off young birch trees that have self seeded in the heather on the reserve. If left to grow the birch will eventually shade out the
heather and the open heathland habitat will be lost. Many species depend on this type of habitat, in particular the night jar - a regular breeding bird on the reserve. Anyone interested in some healthy outdoor exercise should meet at the River Don bridge on Station Road, Deepcar (map reference SK 291 980 post code S362SQ) at 11am.
Wear stout footwear and bring warm clothes and some lunch. Tools will be provided Under 18s are welcome but will need to be accompanied by an adult. The bash is scheduled to finish at 4pm. For more information contact Pete 07903 341065 or Dave on 07515 106966 or visit http:// www.whtrust.org.uk/events. html

Free book on city’s heritage pubs Shot bird of prey
sparks investigation
THE first Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) book about Heritage Pubs in Sheffield has been published with a Stocksbridge man heavily involved.
Dave Pickersgill edited the 81-page ‘Sheffield’s Real Heritage Pubs: Pub Interiors of Historic Interest’ and it is available as a free download from www.sheffieldcamra. org.uk/rhp.
A BUZZARD found illegally shot in a wood near Barnsley has prompted concern by the RSPB and police. A local birder saw the bird fall out of a tree in Warren Wood, Stainborough on August 9 and reported it to the RSPB’s Investigations unit (crime@rspb.org.uk). An RSPB investigator recovered the bird and it was taken for an X-ray. The X-ray identified a broken wing and a shotgun pellet lodged in the wing, which was deemed to have caused the break.
This ground-breaking document is the first attempt to create a snapshot of the Sheffield Pub Heritage picture. Paul Ainsworth, Chair of the CAMRA National Pub Heritage Group, said: “Over the past 25 years, CAMRA has developed its national and regional inventories of historic pub interiors.
The wound was thought to be several days old and had become infected, so sadly the bird had to be euthanized.
“These highlight the crème de la crème of interiors which have either escaped much alteration for many years or contain features of exceptional interest. We have, though, been aware that below these top tiers can be found a host of interiors which, whilst much changed, still offer a great deal worth seeing.
It is illegal to intentionally kill or harm any bird of prey, which are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. To kill or injure one is a criminal offence and could result in an unlimited fine or up to six months in jail.
“The pioneering work carried out in Sheffield to locate and record these pubs has been an inspiring exercise. It enables compilation of this publication portraying the rich tapestry of Sheffield’s pubs from the nationally important to those where what remains, may be fragments, but is nevertheless to be cherished. A bonus, of course, is that many of these pubs sell great real ale. We hope this guide is the first of many.” Included in the 81 pages are over 30,000 words, over 300 images and detailed comment on all the 22 Sheffield pubs listed on the CAMRA Pub Heritage website. These include both The Friendship and the Silver Fox in Stocksbridge. Also documented are both local pubs with some historical interest and many fragments of our historical
The incident was reported to police immediately, and last week the RSPB was informed that the enquiry had concluded with no prosecution. The RSPB is now appealing to the public for information.
brewery and pub heritage. The book is freely available from the Sheffield CAMRA website. Grateful thanks are given to numerous individuals, the National
CAMRA Pub Heritage Group and Sheffield Archives: the latter for providing access to unique historic documentation.
The RSPB’s recent Birdcrime report, published on November 1, revealed that the illegal shooting, trapping and poisoning of birds of prey is a big problem in Yorkshire. Last year the RSPB received reports of 153 incidents of wild bird crime in the North England Region: this was 33% of the total incidents for the UK and the highest number for any region. 10 of these occurred in South Yorkshire, and many more are suspected to have taken place unseen and undetected. The report also revealed that there were no prosecutions
for bird of prey persecution in the whole of 2016. David Hunt, RSPB Investigations Officer, recovered the body. He said: “It is sickening to think that this bird was deliberately shot. Seeing a buzzard soaring high in the sky or picking up worms from a freshlyturned field is part of the joy of a walk in the countryside. However majestic birds like these are, more often than people realise, being intentionally and brutally killed in Yorkshire, and is a cause for local concern. This is not the first time I have been called out to a case like this and unfortunately it is often very hard to find out who is responsible. If you do have information, please come forward.” The RSPB is offering a £1,000 reward for information that leads to a successful conviction. If you have any information relating to this incident, call South Yorkshire Police on 101 quoting reference number 617 10082017. Have you come across evidence of wild bird crime? Let police and the RSPB know if you notice: · Birds of prey that are injured or caught in cage traps (not crows). · Dead birds of prey. If lying next to other dead birds/animals these may be poisoned baits, so do not touch. · Spring traps set out in the open or on the top of poles. If you see anything like this, take photos, note the location and immediately contact police on 101 and RSPB Investigations on 01767 680551 or fill in the online form.

Nationally, WaW recently conducted a survey to collate the many achievements across the UK in the last 10 years. Together, they have created over 1,200 new walking routes covering over 6,400 miles. This has opened up routes that had been abandoned, launched walking festivals and maintained thousands of miles of paths. WaW have promoted the use of public transport, publicised a wide variety of walking opportunities for all ages and abilities and helped to boost their local economies. The WaW scheme has put both Bradfield and Stocksbridge on the UK walking map. It has
opened the eyes of both locals and visitors to the opportunities on our doorstep. As local volunteers in this area, WaW have provided downloadable instructions for more than 50 walks in the Stocksbridge and Bradfield areas and contributed to interpretation panels providing information about landmarks and local history. A regular programme of walks, accompanied by a local historian, has been established and they have produced a leaflet for use by mobility-impaired walkers, especially users of wheelchairs and mobility scooters. They have worked with other organisations to provide guided walks. WaW will continue to bring the pleasures and benefits of walking to an ever-wider audience, and to offer a warm welcome to locals and visitors who, in turn, help to sustain our local businesses and facilities. THE recently developed Burncross Gateway Garden has a new sign thanks to a grant from Ecclesfield Parish Council. Pupils from Angram Bank Infant School recently visited the wildflower and wildlife garden, transformed from an abandoned Council Highways depot, and were asked to produce art work of the flowers and insects they had seen to be included in the overall design.

Access to Chapeltown Station to be improved COUNCILLORS from East and West Ecclesfield have come together with South Yorkshires’ prominent transport agencies are to push for better disabled access to Chapeltown station. At present someone with mobility problems is faced with half a kilometre trip when getting to the station platform due to the winding nature of the current disable access paths. Labour Councillor Zoe Sykes, who represents West Ecclesfield on Sheffield City Council as well as serving Ecclesfield Parish Council, does not think this is good enough and arranged for representatives from Northern Rail and South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE) to meet with Labour’s local representatives to find a solution to this problem. Cllr Sykes arranged this meeting after concerns were raised with her at the High Green Action Team Forum that disabled access needs significant improvement. At the same time, Councillor Steve Wilson has been dealing with Northern Rail to find out if the station is even
compliant with disability legislation, and to discern how to best secure the improvements needed. The meeting between Northern Rail, SYPTE and Labour’s local councillors was a success and it was agreed that bids would be put in to the Department of Transport to upgrade disabled access at the Station. Discussions are on-going as to what funding will be requested but under consideration are requests for a lift on each platform, improved lighting, pathing and railings as well as other options to improve access such as a park and ride also being looked at. Cllr Zoe Sykes said: “It is clear to me that the Station needs greatly improved disabled access. I am delighted that Northern Rail and South Yorkshire Passenger Travel have agreed with us and together we will ensure that government are pushed for the funds to greatly improve the station. I am very confident that we will bring vital improvements to the station, which will benefit a great many”.
IMPROVEMENTS: Councillors and representatives from transport groups at the station.

Ancient local carols go digital in Green Moor SEVERAL villages around north Sheffield have their own individual local Christmas carols and centuries of tradition surrounding them. Some, like Dungworth and Worrall, are now famous and swamped by tourists each year as their local perform in four part harmony in pubs. But Green Moor has been perhaps the most obscure of them all, located just inside Barnsley rather than Sheffield boundaries, its melodies, harmonies and secret singing locations have been known only to select families in the area whose histories there go back for generations. But that is all changing! In the last few years, Green Moor has begun to open up its singing both
to recent incomers to the village and – for selected sings - to tourists from outside. The area’s local carols include versions of a few nationally-known songs such as Silent Night, and some shared with other nearby villages. Lovers of national carols are often taken aback by their stories of Jesus stopping off for a pint, and calls to go and fight the French and Spaniards nestling amongst the usual shepherds and angels. Green Moor adds its own songs and its own takes on those of its neighbours which reflect its location on the border of Penistone’s historic rural farming with Stocksbridge’s more recent steel worker culture, and baroque counterpoints mingle with more rowdy 1920s music-hall themes.
Singing in the village historically experienced some rivalry between its chapel and pub congregations, with each scribbling out and changing the words in their handwritten scores to emphasise their own meanings of the festive season over the centuries.
The new team has also updated the arrangements of the music to reflect modern singing voices, and it has now been computerised and available to download, with singers often practising singing along their choice of the four parts to mp3 files in their cars.
Like other villages, singing starts long before Christmas, as the clocks go back and the ancient winter season begins. Green Moor’s new openness has been growing for several years, with a new committee in the village inviting in new members and venues, including public pub sings for the first time in one of the few villages where carollers still walk house-to-house and perform in their living rooms.
But the new digital technologies don’t change the tradition – the singers are still arguing about whose tenor notes are right, where to slow down in ‘Hail Smiling Morn’, and how to pronounce ‘Sameria’. They are just armed with electronic cut-and-paste to continue the handwritten edit wars of old. The singers are now open to new members, and are also available to sing in new houses in the area during their annual walk. Contact Angela Fox on angela.fox@gmail.com or 0114 288 3581

Hello, I’m Jane Bowland, your local consultant of 10 years experience. We are experts in helping people arrange their wills, trusts and lasting powers of attorney. I specialise in helping all kinds of people gain peace of mind by providing professional estate planning services, but with a personal touch. I offer a FREE consultation without obligation for anybody who would like to know more about any of the following:
• Making a basic will • Setting up lasting powers of attorney • Protecting your home from care fees • Pre–paid funeral plans Having a Will in place ensures your assets go to who you choose. It makes the whole process much easier for the people you leave behind and it puts in black and white exactly what you want to happen, avoiding any misunderstanding or arguing. Setting up a Lasting Power of Attorney gives the people that YOU choose the legal right to look after your financial and personal affairs if you become unable to do so. Without one in place, your spouse, partner or family members are NOT automatically able

to take over. Make sure you avoid the distress this can cause you and your loved ones. I know that planning for the future is a very personal matter. Not everyone is able or wants to travel to an appointment in town to sort out their affairs. I can visit you at a convenient time in the comfort and privacy of your own home to discuss your circumstances. My visit and consultation is completely free and you are under no obligation
to do anything. If you decide to make any arrangements you can be safe in the knowledge that all my professional services and work are fully insured and Collective Legal Solutions are members of the Society of Will Writers, so all my clients are assured of being fully protected at all times. All my clients (and their families) that I have helped in the past have been very happy with my services and tell me they have gained great peace of mind knowing that they have sorted everything out.
Jane came to see my parents to help them protect the family home from any future care fees. She really made us all feel at ease, especially my parents. We had no idea what we could do to protect Mum and Dad. Having set up trusts and Lasting Power of Attorney’s, Mum and Dad can get on with their lives without worrying, knowing everything is now in place. Thank you Jane!
Peacefully sleeping after a long illness.
Ian and Jayne request privacy at this sad time.

How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These need to be filled in with numbers that complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to The solutions will be published here in the next issue. see how ‘straights’ are formed.

After considerable pressure Villa took the lead through a Burns header in the 32nd minute.
Local Sport ERNEST THORPE Halifax Road, Thurgoland 0114 2882152
This was followed by a second goal in the 32nd minute, direct from a free kick taken by Burgin from 20 yards which appeared to go under the defensive wall. Villa hung on for the last 15 minutes after Red Rose scored a scrambled goal in the 75th minute. It was an outstanding display from Villa defenders Robinson, Denby and Price. Next Saturday sees High Green Villa FC take on Dodworth MWFC as top and second in the league meet with a 2pm kick off.

Steels overcome shootout to progress
STOCKSBRIDGE Park Steels progressed into the third round of the Senior Cup after beating Staveley Miners Welfare 4-1 on penalties after the scores were level after extra time. Pigs display heroic grunt but lack cutting edge Stocksbridge 10-35 Hemsworth STOCKSBRIDGE were keen to put on a performance for the home crowd in the wake of some disappointing results at Coal Pit Lane of late and for the first 15 minutes, everything was going to plan. The pack heavy Stocksbridge squad made inroads into the opposition from the off, utilising their effective tight game to maintain possession and gain field position. The mounting pressure told when Ben Brown crashed over the white wash from short range to give the home side the lead, Bryn Evans added the conversion. It was at this point the game began to turn and the visitors sprung to life, adamant on asserting themselves on the fixture. Through a combination of powerful forward runs, neat handling down the back line and clever use of the boot Hemsworth began to capture the lions share of territory leaving the Pigs to
defend for large periods in their own third. There were some big collisions from both teams but as the barrage continued, the home side became noticeably fatigued and the errors began to creep in. After persistent infringements close to their own try line, the referee sent hooker Rhys Keenan to the bin for slowing the ball in the ruck and Hemsworth capitalised on the extra man when their winger went over in the corner. The score just before half time took the wind out of the sales of the Pigs after a great start and insult was added to injury just after the restart when the opposition centre broke clear to score. Despite remaining in the arm wrestle, the Pigs strayed too far from their strengths to claw back the deficit with much of the second half spent defending.
It was only in the last five minutes where the ‘Bridgers decided to go for broke and marched the visitors to their own 22 through barnstorming carries from Joe Smit, Ricky Rowett and Will Blackwell, only for a handling error to be pounced upon during the build-up which Hemsworth again pounced on to extend their lead leaving the final score a disappointing 10 - 35. Man of the match was awarded to Will Blackwell for a dynamic performance on his home debut for the Pigs, even managing a stint in the front row thanks to the guidance of the referee and his teammates. The first XV have a rest week this Saturday as the Development XV take on Hallamshire at Coal Pit Lane with a kick off at 2.15pm but will be making the long trip up to Northallerton on November 25 to face the undefeated league toppers on their own patch.

9 wins in a row for ladies
War Memorial women mark Remembrance Day Oughtibridge WMW 4 Kettering Town 1
OUGHTIBRIDGE War Memorial Ladies made it a magnificent nine wins on the bounce with a 4-1 victory over a spirited Kettering Town Ladies, who started and finished the day bottom of the East Midlands Premier League. In what was a very sporting Remembrance Day game the home side made the perfect start, Codi Melia bursting through within 30 seconds to slot home for 1-0. But it certainly wasn’t one way after that, the visitors spurning a couple of decent chances to pull level which they regretted when Kathryn Mudge headed home Annie Longmore’s corner just before the half hour. Kettering did pull one back just on half time through a very unfortunate own goal. After the break Oughtibridge bombed forward and it was Melia who nipped in ahead of the keeper before squaring to Mudge, who despite having the attention of two defenders still managed to find the bottom corner for 3-1. Lauren Turner’s pace drew a late challenge in the box and Mudge converted the resultant penalty and her hat-trick to wrap it up at 4-1. This Sunday Oughtibridge welcome West Riding high fliers Hepworth United to the War Memorial in an interesting looking County Cup tie, kick off is 1.30pm.
RESPECT: Oughtibridge War Memorial Women and their opponents, Kettering Town Ladies, joined together to show their respect.
