Golf days helps save lives AN ANNUAL charity golf day at Stocksbridge Golf Club has raised over £26,000 since 2009 with this year’s edition pulling in £4,387.60. Daniel Hart, who was part of the Dan and Calvin Kilimanjaro Challenge which has been featured in Look Local, has organised the golf days for the past nine years in memory of his late father, Adrian Hart, who passed away in 2008. The following year saw the inaugural golf day and it has been held a further eight times since. The latest one took place on August 4 and the money has now all come in. Daniel told Look Local: “I just want to say thank you to the golf club and everyone who has contributed in some way.
passed away in 2008. Since 2009 we have raised £26,270.46.” The money raised has been donated to Weston Park Hospital, a specialist cancer hospital in Sheffield. Funds raised go to a number of key areas such as the Cancer Information Support Centre, the Clinical Trials and Research Centre and the Radiotherapy Department. Gemma Noon, community fundraiser for Weston Park Cancer Charity, said: “We can’t thank Dan and everyone at the golf day enough, we’re really lucky to have their support – we can’t put into words how much we appreciate it and what a difference they have already made and continue to help us make!”
“The day is in memory of my late father who

Double fundraising boost for Paces PACES, the Sheffield charity and school which supports children, adults and families with motor disorders, would like to thank everyone involved at The Barrel in Chapeltown who hosted an amazing Garden Party in aid of the charity over the Bank Holiday weekend. It was a great success raising £194.45 towards the purchase of an accessible wheelspin roundabout for children with cerebral palsy and related brain injuries. Paces is attempting to raise £6,300 over the next few months in the hope that the roundabout can be installed during next year’s Easter break. Natalie Yarrow, funding co-ordinator for Paces, said: “We want to say a huge thank you to everyone who helped to make the Party such an enjoyable and worthwhile event - the tombola prize contributors, Irwin Mitchell Solicitors volunteers, Charlotte and her face painting, Joe and his barbecue, the live band ‘Exit’ and not forgetting everybody who turned out to support The Barrel and Paces on the day. “We would particularly like to thank former landlord Brian Parks and cur-
rent proprietors Jamie and Rachael Heathcote for allowing the event to take place at The Barrel.” In other news, Paces has been named by Sheffield United as one of the club’s six charity partners. The Blades supports organisations across the city and chose to work with Paces in our 20th anniversary year. The club will assist with fundraising activities and helping create awareness of the charity. Dave McCarthy, operations director at Sheffield United, said: “It was a very difficult decision to make, there are so many good charities out there but we are delighted with our choices. “At United, we pride ourselves on being a community-focused, family club, and we’re very excited about working with Paces in the coming weeks and months - we believe these that we have been chosen as one of Shefnew partnerships can make a real dif- field United’s nominated charities. ference.” “It has fallen at an ideal time as it’s our Natalie Yarrow, funding co-ordinator 20th anniversary this year, so this news is for Paces, added: “We are all thrilled the cherry on top of our celebration cake - in fact, our 20th anniversary celebration cake will now be in SUFC colours!

A TEAM of volunteers at community radio station Penistone FM have taken on a showdown, all in aid of Barnsley Hospice’s Big Barnsley Bake Off campaign. Penistone FM presenters Cera O’Rourke and John Murray went head to head in a bake off challenge in aid of Barnsley Hospice’s Big Bake Off Month. The bake off was hosted by Penistone FM presenter Connor
Moseley, alongside judges Helen Townsend and Julie Lukey who also host a show on Penistone FM. The filming for the bake off took place on September 1 in the kitchen at Penistone One with the help of technical director Brian Robinson. Presenter Cera O’Rourke, who has been with the station for three years, said: “It was great to get involved with project that
is different to radio, hopefully it helps raise even awareness the Big Bake Off campaign and help raise more awareness for Barnsley Hospice, which is a great charity, who we often work with at closely the station.” To see the full video, visit Penistone FM’s Facebook page on Friday at 3pm.

Jock, in conjunction with the Celtic FC Foundation, have also donated a limited edition Celtic artwork by famed sports artist Paul Trevillion which celebrates the team’s historic European Cup win in 1967 and is worth over £500. A SHEFFIELDBASED Glaswegian is set to do what few people have ever done back in Scotland – unite fans of both the city’s football clubs and get them behind a common cause! Jock Waugh, who is behind Sheffield’s Youdan Trophy, has successfully enlisted commitment from fans of both teams to get behind his campaign to raise money for Macmillan fundraiser John Burkhill
after he suffered alleged abuse at the hands of Rangers fans earlier last month. Both Rangers and Celtic competed in the third year of the renowned city-based competition earlier last month which celebrates the oldest tournament in the world and brings 900 players from some of the world’s biggest clubs to the Steel City. The area, now known as Burncross Gateway Garden, will welcome the Lord Mayor on Thursday between 1pm and 2pm.
Steve and Linda of Raven Ink, formerly of Meersbrook Sheffield, would like to welcome all customers to their new Stocksbridge studio.
This has been an exciting joint project between residents of Burncross, local schools and the Royal Horticultural Society to turn a disused ex-council highways site into a wildflower oasis. Children from Windmill Hill Primary School designed plans using the onsite materials, took
part in scientific experiments and later will be invited to sow the specifically selected wildflower seeds. As part of their curriculum, students from Ecclesfield school worked alongside volunteers.

Andy Foster, from the force’s community safety department, said: “This nuisance call blocker function is designed to protect vulnerable people who are living with dementia from scam and nuisance calls. “It will hopefully also offer some reassurance to people who have relatives or friends living with
dementia that they are not vulnerable to such scams or nuisance calls. “To qualify for the scheme, the person must have a dementia related illness and receive nuisance calls on a reasonably regular basis. “It’s definitely a worthwhile scheme and I’d encourage people to find out more information by visiting truecall.co.uk.”

We want to reassure residents that your local Labour Party are doing everything we can to try and retain a post office in Burncross. We have already met with the Post Office’s regional public affairs manager and talks are ongoing about retaining this vital service. The post office was profitable, well-used and well liked. If Burncross loses this service residents will have to travel to Chapeltown or Grenoside and for many older residents this is not at all convenient. This cannot be right and we will do everything we can to make sure that a post office in Burncross lives on. The area is also in danger of losing its local post box. It would be a real loss for local residents and we our working with the Co-op and Post Office to find a solution. It is hard to understand why a profitable community service would be scrapped, especially by a reputable organisation such as the Co-op, and together with Angela Smith MP we are working to get this temporary closure resolved as soon as possible. Councillors Zoe Sykes and Adam Hurst On behalf of us all at the Hub Food bank we would like to thank all who were involved in our collection day on Friday August 25 in the Co-op. The response by way of donations from our local community far exceeded our wildest dreams. We would like to send thanks to John the manager. Special thanks to Terri and Diane and the team from the Co-op who made it all possible. Above and beyond the call of duty does not even cover the help they gave. Thank you to all our volunteers who gave up their time to help. Top team! Look out for us again on Friday December 15. Ray and Veronica Hawley, Team Leaders, The Hub food bank.

PLANNERS HELP YOU YOUR FITNESS GOALS BODY PLANNERS personal training studio is a new private boutique training studio based in Chapeltown Market place. It opened in April this year.
Rachel is one of the original body planners group training instructors helping support, encourage and mentor the individuals following the structured group session plan.
After working in an independent membership gym Rachel, Jake and Guy decided they wanted to focus on people’s individual goals and provide a service for those who felt daunted by training in a larger training facility.
Jake became a trainer after leaving the Royal Marine Commandos. He said: “I want to help people enjoy a healthier happier lifestyle through structured training and nutrition”.
At BP you can train one-to-one or with like-minded people in small group structured sessions. In addition to this we offer early morning HIIT training session for the early risers. In the coming months progressive Pilates will be available for those who prefer a slower paced but effective training program.
Jake is a certified Ironman and British Triathlon coach and offers remote coaching online for more sports specific training. Jake is also one of the original BP group trainers. He motivates and shares his wealth of knowledge in all things training and nutrition.
All of the trainers at BP offer nutrition advice and follow our ‘Blueprint for life’. The studio offers both indoor and outdoor training facilities.
Guy is originally from Australia. Guy has always had a passion for living a healthy lifestyle and he became a trainer to help people lead a great fitness lifestyle. Guy will be offering progressive Pilates in the coming months.
Rachel, after having three children and finding her body image was at rock bottom, changed her lifestyle and has found her passion in training others to do the same.
Improving flexibility can aid mobility, enhance sports performance but most importantly everyday life. Guys says: “Fitness should be an important part of everyday life.”
She said: “It’s been a rollercoaster ride but five years on I’ve dropped five dress sizes and taken part in a fitness competition.
So if you are looking for a great private training facility, training with like-minded people to achieve a common goal or just some friendly advice, we would be happy to hear from you.
“Most importantly I became a trainer to help others feeling lost find their way to a happier place.”

Use Sheffield Walking Festival to improve your fitness STRAP on your boots and take in Sheffield on foot as Sheffield Walking Festival returns September 8 to 17. Over ten days, the festival presents a host of enjoyable walks for a range of abilities, with plenty to see and discover along the way. The festival celebrates all sides of Sheffield with 34 routes of varying lengths and themes. Take in the city’s varied heritage, fascinating suburbs, hidden outdoor art and eclectic pubs, or enjoy a family themed walk including a picnic and paddle. Several walks will once again showcase the city’s dramatic borders that overlap with the Peak District, while others will shine a light on the city’s more central nature reserves and green spaces. Historical walks follow the Norfolk Heritage Trail, the boundary

IT was real FA Cup drama at The DSM Memorial Ground as ten-man Penistone Church, having had captain Danny Howes sent off for a rash challenge after 12 minutes, battled to a 3-2 win to proceed to the second qualifying round of the FA Cup. Tom Brennan and Brett Lovell had scored Church’s goals and two minutes into stoppage time veteran striker Andy Ring hit the winner.

Stocksbridge go down in tough encounter
Stocksbridge 12-41 Old Otliensians STOCKSBRIDGE RUFC were convincingly beaten 12 - 41 at home to Old Otlensians, with the away team scoring seven tries to two. The Pigs were the first on the score sheet a minute in when great pressure from the kick off caused the visitors to knock on.
The ensuing scrum was skilfully turned into a rolling maul, which was powerfully driven over the line for Ben Brown to score. Unfortunately, and to the disappointment of a large home crowd, that was about as good as it got for the Pigs in the first half, as the Otliensian backline broke the home defence time after time, racking up a quick scoreline of 5-17 before play was halted for a serious injury.
War Memorial take impressive win Norton Oaks 1-3 Oughtibridge WMFC DESPITE having several key players missing the visitors got off to a winning start although the home team probably shaded the opening few minutes. They found debutant goalkeeper Aurellian Masson more than equal to anything that came is way, the War Memorial soon started to dominate and started to threaten the Oaks goal. They took the lead when Ross Brown fired an unstoppable shot from the edge of the area. Oughtibridge kept on dominating before Oaks equalised with Smedley following up a free kick which came back off a post. Soon after Kassim was in the thick of the action when he finished a great move which involved Watson and Sampson. In the second half Oughtibridge had great chances to finish off the game until, with five minutes to go, Harrison was blatantly pushed over with the referee perfectly positioned. From the resulting penalty Callum Chambers made no mistake in sealing the three points.
After a lengthy stoppage, the game resumed and ‘Ensians looked to be the more alert, scoring almost immediately after the restart to give a half time score of 5-24.
However, they did show fight and determination when they could quite easily have capitulated, but instead they spent prolonged periods of time in the oppositions half.
The second half didn’t bring much more luck for the Pigs as they lost Joe Smith, Ben Brown and Dan Lowe through injury.
Ultimately though, Otliensian’s skilful backline again showed why they are favourites to win the league, as they scored three more tries in reply to Jack Spencer’s effort for the home team, giving a final score of 12-41.
Hawks U16s control game in Warrior win Whinmoor Warriors 20-26 Sheffield Hawks SHEFFIELD Hawks under 16s scored four excellent tries against an aggressive and defensive Bradford side and played with a consistency and awareness that made their top three opponents look ordinary for much of this game. Sheffield Hawks took the initiative from the kick off. Hardly any sets were incomplete throughout the match and the standard of tackling and tactical nous was excellent. Wibsey were forced into handling errors throughout the match. Line speed and aggression in contact often forced Wibsey back. Reuben Kateregga and Harry’s Scott and Edgar were excellent defensively in the centres. Saul Hinchliffe, Will Burns and Ryan Pel-
legrina were a constant presence in attack and defence, tackling and running hard. Pat Wakefield opened the scoring after 10 minutes with a penalty goal after excellent pressure from the Hawks players. Wibsey were difficult to break down but Will Burns crossed after excellent driving play from Tom Clarke and Saul Hinchliffe. Man of the match Tom Griffith showed excellent awareness throughout from scrum half, scoring a hat trick of tries from the play the ball. Throughout his defensive work was equally impressive and shows how well the Hawks as a unit have improved in the last two matches.
Wibsey raged against Hawks, losing control to such an extent that they lost two players to injury and a straight red card for foul play. Hawks weathered the storm and their tactical choices were spot on, restricting Wibsey to kicks from their own 20 metre line in an attempt to even the scores. Every Hawks player played well, despite provocation and attempted intimidation from their opponents. Pat Wakefield led by example, scoring with all his kicks and kicking well tactically. The score flattered their opponents as Hawks controlled this game from start to finish.

Belper Town 0-3 Stocksbridge Park Steels By James Grayson www.nonleagueyorkshire.com Joe Lumsden ended his rare barren spell by scoring two tap-ins in Stocksbridge’s comfortable win at Belper. After a goal-less first half, the former Armthorpe Welfare striker scored a simple tap-in straight after the interval. One of his strike-partners, Scott Ruthven, then raised the roof with a terrific effort to double the lead.
The win was soon sealed as Brodie Litchfield gifted Lumsden an easy finish. Stocksbridge Park Steels manager Chris Hilton has re-signed one of his old prodigies in versatile man Todd Jordan.

Jordan arrives from Matlock Town, five years on since playing at Worsbrough Bridge during the great Hilton era at Park Road. Jordan, who can play in defence and midfield, went onto play for Lincoln City, Alfreton Town, Stalybridge Celtic and Buxton.
Busy week at Stocksbridge Golf Club FRIDAY August 25 saw a gathering of past captains at Stocksbridge Golf Club, some of whom played for the Past Captain’s Shield which was won for the first time in three attempts by Alf Pearson with a score of 37 points. More importantly 28 ex-captains met for the annual get together for a few drinks and a meal. Looking back to when the earliest of these ex-captains first played at Stocksbridge was a major talking point. This is a great tradition which shows the commitment to the club by both old and newer members.
