OWLS STAR TO STAGE MEMORIAL MATCH FOR TEEN CHRIS Waddle’s All Stars will be playing at Hallam Football Club this October in memory of popular Hillsborough teenager Scott Marsden, who passed away last March.

The event at the Sandygate Road ground on Sunday October 8 will raise funds for Bluebell Wood, which supported the family of 14-year-old Scott after he passed away following a British kickboxing title fight in Leeds. Forge Valley pupil Scott, who lived with his family in Hillsborough, was a respected kickboxer and had won a 50kg gold title at the World Kickboxing Association finals in Spain in 2015. He also played with Hallam FC juniors, managed by Mick Grant, organiser of the fundraiser, for five years. Mick said: “I always remember Scott first coming along with his best mate when they started with the under nines.

“Scott was a massively popular member of the team and his drive and determination spurred team mates on around him. Scott gave everything, every time that he played, and was a credit to his parents and the club. “When we asked Chris Waddle if he’d be willing to host an All Stars match for Scott’s family, he said yes straight away. We’re hoping to have the under 16s playing the All Stars and then a team of dads playing them. “It should be an entertaining day for everyone involved and a great way to support Bluebell Wood in memory of Scott.” Scott’s mum Jo said: “Scott was a typical sports mad 14-yearold, but also very giving. He would always try to help others. He went out to collect his sister Katie one evening and when they returned, she was wearing his coat and he was carrying her bags.

“Losing Scott has been incredibly difficult, but the support from Bluebell Wood gave us sanctuary during our darkest days and continues to help us. We stayed in Bluebell Wood’s Primrose suite with Scott, where we were able to be with him and start to come to terms with what had happened. “We want to give back to Bluebell Wood and Hallam FC were keen to do something in memory of Scott, so this match gives us the chance to do that. We hope as many people as possible come along on October 8 to support a really worthwhile cause.” Tickets for the match can be bought on the day, Sunday October 8, at Hallam FC, Sandygate Road, Sheffield, S10 5SE. Gates will open at 2pm and the match will kick off at 3pm. The fundraising day will include the all-stars match, a raffle and the chance to win signed football shirts.

Man charged with Deepcar kidnap and rape case from 40 years ago

Local News

Mr Fox makes special night time appearance at nature reserve

A MAN accused of raping and kidnapping an 18-year-old woman more than 40 years ago has appeared in court. Peter Pickering, 79, is charged with the rape and false imprisonment of the woman in Deepcar in 1972. Mr Pickering, of Newbury, Berkshire, was remanded in custody to appear at Leeds Crown Court on October 16. He was charged in August following a review of cold cases by West Yorkshire Police.

Oughtibridge residents object to waste management facility OUGHTIBRIDGE residents have objected to plans for the erection of a waste management facility, including an anaerobic digestion plant for the processing of biodegradable waste in Beeley Wood. Sheffield City Council has received a planning application from Beeley Wood Biogas Ltd to build the facility on Claywheels Lane at the southern end of Oughtibridge. The application is to build a facility that will process waste food, converting it to propane gas and storing the gas in tanks on site. If this permission is granted and the plant built, residents are concerned that it will have a huge impact on the area. The planning documents include a 60-page annex detailing how the company will deal with complaints about the smell from the plant. This proposed development seems to have largely slipped under the radar – but has been opposed by residents of Stockarth Lane, Wadsley Park Village and the Winn Gardens Estate. One resident, Paul Collingwood, is one of the people to have objected. He said: “We live about 200 yards from the proposed development and strongly object to it. The impact on residential properties around Middlewood Road, Stockarth Lane, Wadsley Park Village, Winn Gardens, Birley Carr, Foxhill and Owlerton will be dramatic. “The burning of waste food and associated processes will produce a hazardous and volatile biogas to be stored in big tanks on the site. If there is an explosion it is likely there will be casualties amongst residents close to the site. This is a totally unacceptable risk. “The smell, noise and dust already emanating from the site will increase dramatically. The dangerous and noxious by products including Carbon Dioxide, Ammonia and Hydrogen Sulphide, and will impact on the health and wellbeing of local

residents over a large area. That is totally unacceptable. “Commuters travelling down the busy A6102 into Sheffield from the Upper Don Valley will also be subject to the emissions and odours. This will include people waiting for public transport on the route and at the Supertram terminus at Middlewood. “The prevailing wind direction will generally carry emissions and odours down the valley towards Owlerton and Hillsborough. There are a wide range of organisations and businesses in these areas, including Children’s Nurseries, NHS facilities, Fairlawns Health Centre, Middlewood Bowling Green, Winn Gardens Park, Football pitches and other leisure facilities. Also the Driving Test Centre, local shops and food outlets at Winn Gardens and the SWFC Training Ground. There are many more shops, supermarkets and food outlets in Owlerton. “On Claywheels Lane there are many warehouses and light manufacturing and storage facilities, Sheffield Rangers Junior Football Club, Fletchers Bakery, Sainsbury’s supermarket and other food outlets. All of these will feel the impact of the proposed development. “Claywheels Lane itself and Beeley Wood has really benefitted from the Trans Pennine Trail development and the work to improve access. The foot and cycle track onward to Oughtibridge is really popular. I walk my dog here daily and it is a fantastic local asset. “The track is so good it is regularly used by wheelchair and mobility scooter users. It is also used by dog walkers, fishermen, cyclists, local running clubs, rambling clubs, children’s nurseries, horse riders and I see many families walking along the paths and the adjoining riverbank. The loss of these groups would have a detrimental effect on the pubs and shops up the valley in Oughtibridge. “We have lived in our home for over 30 years. I remember the days when the River Don and its banks were hard to access, very

polluted from the factories in the Upper Don Valley and devoid of fish and other wild life. The old Union Carbide plant spouted black carbon waste and sulphurous fumes all over the valley and you often had to keep your windows closed because of the filth and smell. The valley is unrecognisable now, massively improved and a proposal like this would be an unacceptable retrograde step. “Following the disastrous flooding of 2007, the Environment Agency dredged and cleaned up the river and did a great job of opening up the area to the public. Life returned to the River Don, I regularly see rare bird species like kingfishers and woodpeckers on its banks. Many species of fish now live in the river and the recent rebuilding of the weir is designed to allow salmon to migrate up the river and into the Upper Don Valley. Otters have recently been seen only a mile downstream and if left alone will soon move further up the river. “In Beeley Woods there are grass snakes, newts, owls, bats and deer. An ongoing programme of forestry management helped open up the woodland area adjacent to proposed development, removing dead trees and allowing open areas and new growth to attract wildlife. “Obviously, a development like this would have a really detrimental effect on house prices in the area. There is a mixture of established housing and relatively new development. Wadsley Park Village has some of the best and most expensive housing in Sheffield. “This proposal is completely out of step with the development needs of the area on so many levels, industrial, commercial and residential. It would be a dramatic backward step for the area. “I am contacting our local MP’s and Bradfield Parish Councillors to confirm their support in opposing this proposal, and would welcome the opportunity to speak to the Planning Committee to discuss this further.”

A VERY different kind of fox once again made an appearance at RSPB Old Moor on Saturday to mark the changing of the seasons and hand the reserve back to the creatures of the night. The legendary Mr Fox returned to the reserve, near Barnsley, on Saturday September 23. Spectacular and eerie, Mr Fox and his troupe of dancers perform with burning torches in the dead of night, hidden behind masks. They are normally found performing the Langsett Fox Dance on the Hunters Moon, following the autumnal equinox, but in recent years have added a special appearance at the reserve.

Craig Hartley, Visitor Operations Manager at RSPB Old Moor, said: “We are honoured and privileged to welcome Mr Fox and his dancers to the reserve once more. At this time of year, our summer late night opening ends and the event signifies the change in the season; a time when the days get shorter, late night opening ends and the reserve once more becomes the domain of the nocturnal animals living here.” Craig continued: “It is an incredibly special night for everyone with the courtyard lit up with the glow of flames and reverberating to the sound of the drums.”

MP expresses anger at Post Office closure

Over 600 visit village show

ANGELA Smith, the MP for Penistone and Stocksbridge, has written to the most senior manager in the Co-op Group after hearing conclusively that the Co-op has no intention of retaining Post Office services at Burncross. The Post Office, which closed when Cost Cutter decided that it did not want to take out the lease on the premises currently being constructed on the site of its old store, is sorely needed in the area. Before closing, it was processing a significant number of transactions and the announcement of its closure generated a 1,200 signature petition to the MP.

THE seventh Thorpe Hesley and Scholes Village Show at Trinity Community Centre on Saturday September 16 was a great success and the weather stayed dry. Over 600 people attended the event. The show was opened by the Mayor of Rotherham, Eve Rose Keenan. The vegetable, fruit, flower, handicrafts, cookery and children’s classes made fantastic displays in the hall and church. Trophies for the best entries were also presented. Many local groups and charities had stalls. The Jill Hyde Leigh School of Dance, Wentworth Youth Theatre and Herbalife fitness entertained everyone. The dog show with classes including ‘dog most like its owner’ was very popular.

The organisers would like to thank Sheffield Arena, Sheffield Steelers, Parkside Farmshop and Firth and Sons Florists for donating raffle prizes. Raffle winners were R. Perry, E. Hackney, A. Brown, J. Varnam and R. Hunt. Photos are on the show Facebook page and also on www.thorpeandscholes.org together with a full list of prize winners. Some produce was donated for the Holy Trinity Harvest celebrations and will be passed on to Shiloh Homeless Project in Rotherham. The organising committee would like to thank everyone for their support and are looking forward to next year’s event.

After meeting with CO-OP representatives she was hopeful the company understood the ethical case for ensuring that Burncross residents should continue to enjoy access to a local Post Office. However, after the meeting, she received a letter from the CO-OP confirming they would not be operating a Post Office from their new store when it opens. This decision, she contends, is one which abandons the ethical business principles celebrated by the Cooperative Group and its many members. Commenting, Angela Said: “The fact remains this Post Office was and could still be a viable strong business and the Co-op’s position is contrary to everything this ethical organisation is supposed to stand for. “It leaves Post Office Limited still searching for a viable location from which to provide services in Burncross and the Co-op’s refusal to even a countenance a counter badly lets down the community.”

CLOSED: The staff at the Post Office led the petition against the closure

POLICE APPEAL FOR HELP IDENTIFYING ROGUE BIKER CAN you help officers identify the rider of this motorbike whose driving has been reported more than 45 times since May this year? The motorbike, which is believed to be a Honda CRF, has activated a number of cameras across Sheffield where the rider can be seen doing wheelies at speeds between 50 and 80mph. The key areas where the bike has been seen include the A616 Stocksbridge bypass, the A6135 around Chapeltown and the A61 in the north of Sheffield. Officers have attempted to pursue the rider and a number of tactics have been used to try and stop the rider. They are now asking members of the public to help identify the rider in a bid to prevent further dangerous driving. Do you recognise the rider? Can you help officers identify them? Anyone with information is asked to contact info@safetycamera.org

Over recent months the forces specialist off road biking team have been carrying out a number of dedicated operations across Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield to target a rise in reports relating to off road nuisance bikes. The off road biking team, which officially launched in March this year, has seen officers receive off road bike training to enable them to conduct patrols, issue warning notices, bring offenders committing criminal offences to justice and protect members of the public. In addition to dedicated roads policing staff, a number of local policing officers with knowledge of problem areas have been recruited and trained to work on the off Road team. This training has allowed officers to conduct focused operations in areas identified as having increased reports relating to distress and disruption caused by off road bikes. Through the activity and proactive patrols carried out by the team, officers have been able to complete 19

specialist operations across South Yorkshire. From these operations, they have successfully issued 31 warning notices, seized eight bikes, recovered 12 bikes for no insurance, recovered 10 bikes reported as stolen, made four arrests, reported 20 people on summons and engaged with over 80 riders from across South Yorkshire. PS Jon Hardwick, who is one of the trained off road bike officers, has said: “Our main ambition is not to prevent legal off road riders from using their bikes on purpose built tracks or legal routes. It is to ensure they are riding safely, not posing a risk to members of the public and removing the threat illegal bikers are posing to our communities by specifically targeting illegal and antisocial use. “ “Over recent months we have seen a rise in reports across South Yorkshire related to nuisance off road bikes and we are aware this has caused distress and disruption to our local communities. In response to the concerns raised and to prevent any further disruption,

the officers in the unit have received the specialist training and in partnership with local councils have acquired a number of additional off road police bikes to tackle this.” “This work has enabled officers to effectively utilise these new skills and achieve results, which demonstrates the overall purpose of the team. “I hope through this dedicated action, residents feel reassured that everyone at SYP is committed to listening to, working to resolve and preventing issues caused by illegal off road nuisance bikes.” The wheelie good results achieved highlight the success and effectiveness of the work carried out by the dedicated team and this action will now continue, to prevent disruption and create a happy and safe place to live. If you have any concerns relating to the use of illegal off road bikes, or would like to report an incident, please speak to a local officer or ring 101.

FRIENDS COMPLETE THREE-LEGGED CHALLENGE FOR CHARITY

TWO friends took on a three-legged challenge to raise money for St Luke’s Hospice at the weekend. Linda Jeffels, 65, was tied at the leg to niece, Julie Lamb, 43, and setting off from the St Luke’s shop in Stocksbridge centre, walked to the Fox Valley roundabout and back three times on Saturday. The pair took on the challenge in memory of Linda’s late husband Mick Jeffels who passed away on his 66th birthday in 2014. Neighbour and friend Lynne Thickett was on hand to support the effort. Daring Linda wanted to do a wing walk but was advised not to by her doctor and settled on the three-legged walk instead. They raised over £700 for the hospice.

The first phase of this work to the underside of the bridge was completed in September 2017 and the remainder of the strengthening work now needs to be carried out on the bridge deck. This means that the bridge will be closed from October 2 to all vehicles and pedestrians. Signed traffic diversions will be in place.

Sheffield couple ordered to pay a record penalty of £4,000 for noisy dogs A SHEFFIELD judge has imposed the largest ever penalty of £4,000 on a couple who failed to keep their dogs quiet. It is the biggest fine to have been handed down in Sheffield for a case of this kind. Sheffield City Council’s Environmental Protection Service prosecuted Carl Collins, 34 and Rebecca Carnell, 27 of Thompson Hill, High Green, for failing to comply with abatement notices which legally required them to reduce noise from their pets. The couple were today found guilty at Sheffield Magistrates’ Court. They were ordered to pay £1,000 each to the two people who had brought the complaint. Mr Collins and Mrs Carnell face a bill of £1,052 each to cover the legal costs of Sheffield City Council. The case dates back nearly three years, to October 2014, when the pair were first issued with abatement notices after repeated complaints about the dogs. The dogs continued to cause a nuisance by barking loudly, and often during the early hours. A reminder about the notices was sent to the couple but neighbours carried on objecting to the noise. In January 2017 noise monitoring equipment was installed at the complainants’ home and during the week several breaches were detected. Councillor Bryan Lodge, Cabinet member for the Environment at Sheffield City Council, said: “The financial penalty reflects the misery of the neighbours caught up in this issue. “We take all noise complaints seriously, and although we will make every effort to resolve complaints at an early stage, if our help and advice is ignored we will use formal action. “We hope that this action serves as a warning to others.”

Problems with noise can be reported to Sheffield City Council’s contact centre by telephone on 0114 2734567. Council officers will try and resolve noise complaints by first providing help and advice. If this does not resolve the problem, then there are legal powers the Council can use to try and achieve a resolution. If an abatement notice is breached without a reasonable excuse, then the matter may go to court. Five dog owners from Sheffield have been successfully prosecuted for failing to get their dogs correctly microchipped. The fines, costs and surcharges totalled £2,480 and were the latest in a series of prosecutions taken by the Council’s Environmental Protection Service since the law was introduced in April last year. The owners were required to ensure the details on the their dogs’ microchips were up to date. However, despite repeated letters and visits from enforcement officers, the pet owners failed to take action. The cases were taken to Sheffield Magistrates’ Court by the council on September 21 where five people were found guilty. National legislation brought in a requirement for all dogs to be microchipped and for the information to be kept up to date. The exception to this is dogs which have a veterinary certificate stating this should not happen due to reasons relating to the animal’s health.

A DOWNHILL mountain bike rider from Stocksbridge has returned from Wales with the Red Bull Hardline 2017 title. This year’s contest was one for the history books with the course being harder than ever before, with sketchy conditions transforming the track throughout the entire weekend – so much so that the decision was taken to move the race start lower down at the cannon. Riders were caught out by the slippery, steep rocks just before the massive road gap, with many slipping pedals and some coming off altogether. Despite the 2016 winner Bernard Kerr and first place qualifier Adam Brayton being favourites for the win, small mistakes throughout Kerr’s run and a crash for Brayton meant that it was Craig Evans, 26, who came out on top at the end of the day.

STOCKSBRIDGE MAN WINS WITH DARING DOWNHILL DASH

Craig was riding confidently for most of the weekend and looked to be in a league of his own during his race run. He said after his win: “I didn’t think I was going to win at all so it’s a crazy feeling. I had bits where I was smooth, and I had bits where I was a bit wild, but I managed to hold on to it until the bottom. So yeah, buzzing.”

As always, singers, musicians and audience are very welcome - bring along your watery songs of the sea on September 24, and get ready to sing, play or just enjoy the sea air!

FOX Valley in Stocksbridge is hosting a special awareness day on Sunday October 1 focussed on promoting events and services in the community for older people.

The event has been organised by the Mayor & Deputy Mayor of Stocksbridge, Keith Davis and Julie Grocutt, Beth Wilson from Wiltshire Farm Foods and Kathy Markwick from Home Instead Senior Care Sheffield. It will run from 11am to 3pm in the market area at Fox Valley with lots of activities and entertainment planned throughout the day.

Kathy said the event follows the success of regular Friendship lunches at The Old Rolling Pin at Fox Valley.

The event has been organised to celebrate The International Day for Older Persons on October 1st and will be attended by the Lord Mayor of Sheffield Cllr Anne Murphy as well as the Mayor of Stocksbridge Cllr Keith Davis. As well as music and entertainment from Stevie Moore there will be face painting, food tasting and free reflexology taster sessions.

Kathy added: “We really wanted to do something for the whole community but which focusses on an awareness of what groups and support are out there for older people in our part of the city. “We hope everyone will come along and support the event and find out a little more about some of the fantastic groups and organisations there are.” To find out more about news and events at Fox Valley please visit www.foxvalleysheffield.co.uk

Bus Pass Buskers live and kicking

THE Bus Pass Buskers continue to entertain a wide selection of people, over a very wide geographical area.

This year for the first time, they are presenting a show at Thurgoland Village Hall, on Saturday December 9.

They have just returned from Harrogate Flower Show, where they play each spring and autumn, and just prior to that they played once more at Southport Flower Show.

A show not to be missed, why not take advantage of this special prelude to other Christmas activities and make up a party with friends.

Their music is 50s, 60s, country and western, blues and skiffle. They mix this with a very liberal sprinkling of humour, which sees them grow an ever increasing band of fans.

Tickets are priced at the especially low price of only £5 in order that they will have a full house. They are available from any band member, and at the office of Look Local in Stocksbridge. Already, 35 tickets have been sold and the venue only holds 80 people so you better be quick if you intend not to miss this show. There is a bar on the night.

STANNINGTON BRASS BRING HOME THE SILVERWARE

STANNINGTON Brass Band, with musical director Derek Renshaw, are celebrating their latest contest success after putting in a winning performance at the Brass Band Festival in Dronfield. Their 20-minute programme showcased the breadth of their versatility, opening with an uptempo salsa and closing with the soulful hymn The Old Rugged Cross.

A spokesperson for the band commented: “We were delighted to be asked to take part in this event and even more delighted to be bringing home the winners’ trophy! It’s a contest with a great atmosphere – one big celebration of brass band music!”

The band will be reprising some of the prize winning numbers at their forthcoming concert at the Lomas Hall, Stannington on Saturday October 7 starting at 7.30pm.

The concert will also feature renowned soprano cornet player Kevin Crockford and the up and coming talent in Stannington Training Band with their conductor Tim Parris.

Tickets are £7 for adults, £6 for concessions and £3 for children under 16. They are available from Stannington Hardware or telephone 0114 233 2821.

JON BODEN LEADS DUNGWORTH CHOIR AT STANNINGTON STORY FESTIVAL A SPECIAL treat lies in store for music fans when Dungworth Choir makes one of its first public appearances at Stannington Story Festival on Saturday September 30. The choir is a new project and has been assembled by local folk legend Jon Boden. Admission to the festival is free and it takes place in Stannington Park from 1.30pm till 5.30pm, with the choir taking the stage at about 3.30pm. Other local luminaries on the festival bill include prize-winning poet James Caruth whose latest collection Narrow Water is all set to be published by Salzburg University Press, and award-winning author Samantha Priestley discussing her novel A Bad Winter that was launched in Sheffield’s Rutland Hotel last week. The purpose of Stannington Story Festival - as well as providing a great spectacle for the audience - is to mark three years of volunteer management in Stannington Library.

Birley Carr and Grenoside Players present new play

BIRLEY CARR Musical and Dramatic Society was formed in 1947 with a performance of A Slave in Araby at Mount Zion Methodist Church, Birley Carr, which was also the 70th anniversary of the opening of the Church. Rehearsals began for The Slave of Araby in 1939, before the outbreak of the war and resumed in 1947. The Society has received enthusiastic support ever since and now has a loyal following for all its performances.

Due to the closure of the Church, the group merged with Grenoside Players and secured a new home in Grenoside Community Centre for future productions. The Society presents two productions a year, in the spring it is a popular Gilbert & Sullivan operetta, with Iolanthe being the choice for March 2018. In the autumn, it is the turn of the play and in past years, productions have included ‘The Importance of being Earnest’,

‘Hobsons Choice’, ‘Blithe Spirit’ and more recently ‘Allo Allo’. This year is the classic thriller by Wilkie Collins, ‘The Woman in White’, a new adaptation by Constance Cox. This will take place at Grenoside Community Centre on Wednesday October 18 to Saturday October 21, starting at 7.30pm. Tickets are available on 0114 2460522. They are priced £7 for adults and £5 for children.

Your Letters one wonders what the UK’s chief negotiator for negotiating the Brexit deal, David Davis MP along with his team, have been doing in Brussels this past month or so?

Resignation Dear Editor, I would like to inform the people of High Green, through Look Local, that following my resignation from the Labour Party on personal grounds I am standing down as a member of Ecclesfield Parish Council with immediate effect.

The fact is that Brexit negotiations in detail have already been taking place over recent weeks as a result of a Parliamentary vote back in March this year to trigger Article 50. A perusal of the Parliamentary record provided by Hansard will attest not only this is the case but that the Official Opposition did actually take a position of supporting the vote to trigger the UK exit from the EU at that time.

I stood for election in May 2015 as a Labour Party candidate and having left the Labour Party feel Given the only vote which has recently taken place relating to the UK exit from the EU since Parliament obliged to also leave the Parish Council. reconvened after the summer recess was on the It has been suggested that I could stay as an Repeal Bill early in the week commencing 11th independent councillor but I feel the honourable September it would seem reasonable to surmise thing to do is resign. The Repeal Bill is about how the UK will deal with over forty years of EU legislation incorporated into Eldon Hanson, UK law once the UK has left the EU. The Repeal Bill High Green put forward by the Conservative and Unionist Party proposes to firstly transfer all existing legislation into UK law and subsequently enable the Executive Valley in Bloom showcase Branch of Government – i.e. Ministers – the right invitation to change any of that legislation without democratic debate in Parliament through the introduction of changes via Secondary legislation on the whim of Valley in Bloom are holding our annual showcase a Minister. event on Sunday October 1, 2.30pm at the Venue. Timely reminder Dear Editor, The recent contribution to Look Local letters from your correspondent Mr Graham Coleman (letters 14th September) provides a timely reminder that the key to sound decision making lies in accurately identifying what is taking place and that whilst anyone is certainly entitled to their own opinion they are not entitled to their own facts. Mr Coleman implies that a recent vote has taken place in the Westminster Parliament to commence “Brexit negotiations in detail. This being the case

This accurately represents the reality in which Mr Coleman complains that elected members of the opposition have voted against. Which is not just odd but highly perverse and contradictory. As I recall the key argument for the UK leaving the EU was to “take back democratic control of our laws and legislative process from an “undemocratic Brussels Parliament in which ‘unaccountable and over powerful Ministers at European level made law with inadequate and ineffective scrutiny.’ Yet here we have a case of someone purporting to support taking democratic control back into the UK Parliament complaining that elected representatives have voted against allowing effective and adequate democratic Parliamentary scrutiny of laws being bypassed and legislation being placed in the hands

of unaccountable and over powerful Ministers. Is that really what you and others voted for in the EU referendum Mr Coleman? To swap one set of undemocratic and unaccountable law making processes for another? How is that “taking back democratic control? It really is time some people made their minds up one way or another because those who take that position cannot have it both ways and expect to be taken seriously.

Japanese food on tip of world’s tongue Travel is known to broaden the mind but now it seems our taste buds are being tantalised by more exotic flavours too. For the traditional foreign favourites of French and Italian are being challenged for their top spots by food from the Far East. In fact, Japanese food could one day rule the world after being voted global travellers’ third favourite culinary delight. A new worldwide food survey of more than 27,000 travellers for Hotels.com reveals tough competition on the tourist’s menu. Although 32% of international travellers still adore Italian and 24% favour French cuisine, with them taking first and second spot in the rankings, dishes from the Land of the Rising Sun are gaining in popularity with more cosmopolitan palates. Eighteen per cent of people surveyed favoured Sushi, Tempura, Ramen and Japanese Soba, particularly when it comes to fine dining. Several other Asian countries appear in the Top Ten list, including China at 13%, Thailand on eight, Taiwan and India on five per cent. The popularity of paella and tapas no doubt con-

extraordinary £33.44 for a club in a five-star hotel to a more reasonable £13.72 in a two star establishment, with the Paris average coming in at £20.43.

Alison Cooper of Hotels.com says: “Japanese food is seen as great example of healthy eating and there are a variety of Japanese restaurants in every multicultural capital.

The second most expensive was the Swiss city Geneva, where the sandwich costs an average of £20.10, followed closely by £18.83 for a club in Oslo.

“I’m a big fan of Japanese and not surprised at its elevated ranking. The fact that it beat more traditional holiday dishes such as tapas and burritos is testament to the world class reputation of Japanese chefs.” Meanwhile further research by Hotels.com has revealed Paris as the most expensive city for a club sandwich. The hotels expert used the classic chicken, bacon, egg, lettuce and mayo sandwich as a measure of affordability - the Club Sandwich Index (CSI) - to give holiday-makers an indication of the costs associated with their holiday destination. In total Hotels.com surveyed the sandwich prices in 750 hotels in the five, four and three star category across 26 countries.

The UK took 10th spot with an average club coming in at just under £12 and the cheapest at just £6.50. Spanish tourists can expect to fork out an average of £10 for the snack, while in India, New Delhi, a club would set you back just £5.91 on average. Alison adds: “When planning a trip away, many holiday-makers don’t always factor the everyday costs of items including food and drink into their decision making process. “By providing people with a Club Sandwich Index it is the perfect way for holidaymakers to assess a destination’s real cost. Paris may well be the gastronomic capital of the world but at an average £20.43 per club, travellers may be better off sticking to a croque-monsieur!”

In the French capital, the CSI showed prices ranged from an

Education Guide Finding good quality childcare can be a difficult task for parents. There are lots of things to look out for and to remember to ask when you visit a childcare setting. How do you know if your child will be happy? Will they cater for your child’s needs? Do they provide feedback about how your child is doing? What if my child doesn’t like it? Draw up a shortlist of childcare providers using information from your local Family Information Service. Most childcare providers (including nurseries, childminders, children’s centres and extended school services) looking after children under the age of eight years usually have to be registered with Ofsted (the Office for Standards in Education, Children’s Services and Skills). Ofsted visits all registered childcare services and makes sure that standards are being met and that children are safe. You can check Ofsted’s grade and report for the childcare providers you are considering at www.ofsted.gov.uk. Book your child’s place and arrange details like hours, start date, and who is allowed to pick up your child. You may need to pay a retainer fee to keep the place open until your child starts. Your child may take some time to settle into any new childcare setting that you start them in, so allow them time to adjust to their new surroundings, especially if this is their first time in childcare. Most childcarers, such as childminders, will offer a ‘settling in period’, where you have an agreed length of time to assess whether the setting is the right one for your child and that they are happy there.

YORKSHIRE has received a huge boost today with the news that the Tour de Yorkshire will grow from three to four days in 2018.

“This decision will help us attract even bigger names in the future and allow us to design a more varied and spectacular route.

Organisers Welcome to Yorkshire and A.S.O had been seeking to extend the race after its phenomenal success over the last three years, and cycling’s world governing body the UCI confirmed the decision on Thursday with the four-day Tour de Yorkshire being included on their 2018 Europe Tour calendar between Thursday May 3 and Sunday May 6.

“Our race is growing in stature all the time and the next two editions will hold even greater prestige given that Yorkshire is also hosting the UCI Road World Championships in 2019.

And if that wasn’t enough, the Asda Women’s Tour de Yorkshire will also double in size next year, increasing from one to two days on Thursday May 3 and Friday May 4. The news will bring far-reaching benefits to the county and further enhance Yorkshire’s reputation as a world-class cycling destination. The Tour de Yorkshire was launched in 2015 following the hugely successful Tour de France Grand Départ 12 months previously, and it has since grown to become one of the sport’s best-supported and most exciting races. This year’s event was broadcast live in 180 countries and a record 2.2 million fans lined the route. The race also generated £64 million for the Yorkshire economy and the Asda Women’s Tour de Yorkshire remains one of the most lucrative events in the sport. Welcome to Yorkshire Chief Executive Sir Gary Verity said: “This is absolutely tremendous news and something we have long been working to achieve. We are grateful to British Cycling for supporting our application, and to the UCI for granting us this extension. “Seeing the Tour de Yorkshire grow into what it is today is one of my team’s very proudest achievements and none of this would have been possible if the people of Yorkshire - and Great Britain hadn’t taken the race to their hearts.

“Cycling is booming across the county and today marks an exciting new chapter for our race.” Tour de France Director Christian Prudhomme said: “The Tour de Yorkshire is a true success story and the way the race has grown over the last four years has been incredible. “The size and passion of the crowds has not just impressed me, but the cyclists too. They are always blown away by the reception they receive and are already looking forward to coming back in 2018. “Extending the race to four days will allow us to visit more parts of the county and put on an even greater show.” British Cycling Chief Executive Julie Harrington said: “We welcome the decision by the UCI to endorse the increase in duration of both the men’s and women’s races at the Tour de Yorkshire as a sign of the fantastic work done by Welcome to Yorkshire in collaboration with British Cycling in building an event which inspires people across Britain to get active by getting on their bikes. “We look forward to working with the Tour de Yorkshire team to finalise arrangements.” The decision to grow the Tour de Yorkshire from three to four days means there will be eight start and finish destinations for the 2018 race, and these are set to be announced on Thursday September 28. The full route will then be unveiled at a high-profile press conference on Tuesday December 5.

Fantastic first half seals Stocksbridge win

Pic: Pete Revitt A NEAR-PERFECT first half saw Stocksbridge RUFC’s first team pick up their first win of the campaign with a 21-15 home win against Leeds Medics & Dentists at Coal Pit lane last Saturday. With Ben Westby and Liam O’Leary being recalled and a first appearance of the season for the evergreen Ben Senior, the Stocksbridge backline looked confident in defence and threatening in attack. The Pigs were the first on the score-sheet when fullback Ryan Smith capitalised on Ben Senior break and skipped past the covering defence to score on the left. Adam Frith converted to give an opening score of 7-0 to the home team and it wasn’t long before the Stocksbridge pack were marching their opposition back down the pitch again with a trademark rolling maul that earned them 40 metres, before Ben Brown took two defenders over the line with him to score under the posts. Once again Frith converted to give a deserved 14-0 lead before the home team’s defence was tested as Leeds spent 10 minutes on the

Pigs’ try line, only to be thwarted by a determined and aggressive defence that has been somewhat lacking in recent weeks. The last real attacking action of the half came from Stocksbridge, when Pete Newton took a ball on the halfway line and proceeded to throw defenders off as he made his way towards the away team’s try line, before offloading to Ben Senior who dotted down for the home team’s third try. Frith once again converted to give a half time score of Stocksbridge 21 Leeds Medics & Dentists 0. With the Pigs growing in confidence and keen not to let their hard work go to waste, it seemed inevitable that the 4th and bonus point try would be a formality, but instead they were made to defend for almost the entire half, as the referee delivered a 20-3 penalty count in favour of the opposition. Struggling to keep their frustration in check, the Pigs let in three tries, but it would have been more if it wasn’t for a fantastically resolute defence, led primarily by centres Liam O’Leary and Ben Senior.

Tigers dream of championship LOCAL lad Josh Bates says he can’t stop dreaming of Sheffield winning the Championship – but knows the importance of keeping his feet on the ground. The Owlerton outfit travel to Glasgow on Tuesday at 7.30pm for the second leg of their playoff semi-final. The Sheffield Window Centre Tigers are in confident mood ahead of their trip to Scotland thanks to their stunning 59-31 home leg victory last Thursday. And while a 28-point advantage does make them firm favourites

to progress and take on Ipswich in the Grand Final, Bates says getting off to a strong start at the Peugeot Ashfield Stadium will be important.

“We did that with only half a team a few weeks ago so now we’re at full strength, I don’t see any reason why we can’t do it again.

“I think we have to do that because if they do how we did on Thursday in the first few races then that will get their belief up,” Bates said.

“I can’t stop thinking about us winning the league, but it’s hard because there’s still a lot of hard work to be done yet.

“But hopefully a 28-point lead will be enough for us and while it’s easy to say we want to defend that, we actually want to go to Glasgow and win on the night as well.

“We can’t even think about racing against Ipswich in the Final until we’ve made sure we’ve got the job done against Glasgow. “So hopefully we can just get the points in the bag as early as we can and then we can look further ahead.”

The final score read Stocksbridge 21 Leeds Medics & Dentists 15, but in reality, the home team were considerably better than their counterparts and were worthy winners. Speaking after the game, Head Coach Gam Kassim commented said: “I’d much prefer to focus on what we did right rather than how we feel the referee performed. I thought we were really clinical in the first half and looked to have learned from last week, when we threw the game away. It was also great to see the enthusiasm in defence and although our forwards are our primary go-forward mechanic, I thought our backs were sensational today, in both defence and attack.” Stocksbridge are at home once more this Saturday, as they looked to make it back-to-back wins when they face newly promoted Skipton at Coal Pit Lane. Kick off is at 3pm and as ever, your support is greatly appreciated.

Runners round-up

This was the second year of the new look race and route. The race takes you out from the city centre up to Endcliffe Park and then back. Not the easiest of routes but it’s popular with first timers. Local residents Marianne Wilkinson (60:32), Chloe Hobson (62:44) and Barbara Caswell (1:25:29) all did amazing, espcially as for some it was their first time.

The club hosted the Penistone Hill Race. It was won by local runner Andy Swift, closely followed by PFR runner Scott Hinchcliffe, both inside the old course record. PFR won the men’s team prize with Hinchcliffe, Damian Kilpin and Lee Storey. The club also won the ladies’ team prize with Lesley Parker, Julia Cobham and Jill Carlton.

Over at Rother Valley was the Global Energy Race, a one-of-a-kind running event catering to competitive runners, families and those new to running. Taking place on 24th September across 38 cities in 21 countries, the UK edition is being held in the beautiful Rother Valley Country Park.

Gareth Cooke raced the Hull Marathon, finishing in 2:49.44 in an excellent eighth place.

Alison Hulley competed in this knocking a massive chuck off her personal best she set earlier in the year at Chatsworth.

Keith Gordon ran the hilly Macclesfield Half Marathon, finishing third V65 in 1:51.13.

WEEK one of the regular hockey season saw most of Chapeltown’s teams playing, shaking out the rust of the off season and integrating many new players into the team squads. The men’s first team drew 3-3 away at Harrogate but the ladies’ firsts lost 4-1 at home to Halifax.

Saturday saw the Nine Edges Endurance. It is a traverse from Fairholmes, over nine gritstone edges (Derwent, Stanage, Burbage North, Burbage South, Froggatt, Curbar, Baslow, Gardom’s and Birchen Edge) to The Robin Hood pub near Baslow. Deepcar resident and Dark Peak V50 runner Stephen Kenworthy competed the race as part of his preperations for his next ultra race which is the Dark Peak 30 on October 14.

At Whernside, the final English and British fell championship race took place over four miles with 1,558 of ascent. Damian Kilpin finished 66th, Ian Charlesworth 157th, Steve Storey 172nd, Brent Lindsay 225th.

The men’s seconds won 6-0 at home to Doncaster fifths and the ladies seconds lost 5-2 away at Barnsley firsts.

Majka Kunicka completed the Nine Edges Fell race, finishing second female.

The men’s third team lost 5-0 at home to Sheffield.

PARK STEELS FALTER AGAINST STRUGGLERS AFTER NINE-GOAL DISPLAY

Established Retailer in Audio, Video and Electrical Goods

By David Bradley AFTER the goal fest of last week, Steels suffered a major hangover and a lacklustre performance. There was just the one goal in this game, against Steels, coming on eight minutes when Buxton pounced on a loose ball in the area and smashed home. After that Market Drayton sat back, slowed the game down and tried to catch the Steels on the break.

David Reay produced a great save when Griffiths went through one on one. Steels tried and tried to get break down the defence, but were limited to half chances and Market Drayton did what they needed to do to go home with all three points.

Golf Club news SATURDAY September 16 saw the start of a two-day competition for the Kilbride Cup at Stocksbridge Golf Club. There were a total of 72 Gents playing two 18 hole rounds, concluding on Sunday. 11 players were either on or below par through both days but only two players achieved par or below in both rounds. In fourth place came Gary Siddons with a nett score of 133 (one under par). Third was Mick Hulbert also on nett 133 but with a great four under par second round. In Second place was Ash Howe who achieved a very creditable nett par over the two days. With a terrific nett score of two under par round one, followed by an even better three under par on Sunday, the overall winner of the Kilbride Cup was Matthew Sedgwick. Also on Sunday, was the Autumn Mixed foursomes. A good field of 13 couples took part on a windy and showery afternoon with only a few pairs missing the rain. In third place with a nett score of 70.5 were Mother and Son pair Alison and Matthew Sedgwick. Matt must have had an exhausting weekend with three rounds in two days. In second place were Ladies Captain, Kath Busfield and her brother-in- law Sandy Murphy with a nett 69.5. The worthy winners were Denis and Iris Haley with a great nett score of 68.5. Well done to Dennis and Iris and thanks to all who took part, especially those competing for the first time. The Dragons played on Wednesday for the Wharncliffe Dragon trophy. This is a competition where each player is pitting his skill against the course par score of 65. Only two players came in one up ( nett 64). In third place was Dave Jones finishing a creditable one down. In second place was Club Vice Captain Frank Milnes one up, but the winner also on one up against the course was Frank Hines. There were no competitions on Thursday due to the weather conditions. But both Ladies and gents Thursday comps should continue through the winter (weather permitting of course). The weather conditions over the last few weeks have been far from perfect, but thanks to our Greenstaff we have not missed many competitions. Thanks to all members who turn up and support our many and varied competitions.
