ANTI-FRACK PROTEST cannabis factory uncovered - page 02
pigs heartbreak after last-gasp defeat - page 24
PROTESTERS gathered outside FCC Environment waste disposal site in Ecclesfield on Monday in an attempt to stop the site being used to process waste from the fracking industry. The site, which is situated just off Station Road in Ecclesfield, has been earmarked to receive waste water from fracking sites around the country. High Volume Hydraulic Fracturing, more usually known as ‘fracking’, is a controversial method of extracting gas from deep underground. After drilling, high volumes of water, chemicals and sand are injected at high pressure to fracture shale rock and release gas. The water then flows back to the surface containing the original additives plus contaminants such as NORM (Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials). This contaminated water then has to be cleaned up and disposed of. Multi-national chemicals company, INEOS, has posted a high court injunction notice on the gates of the
Protesters gather outside the gate of INEOS in Ecclesfield
FCC site, stating its intention to use the site to process the contaminated water. The water will be transported by tanker to the site for treatment, then by sewer to Blackburn Meadows for further processing before being released into the River Don.
Protestors believe millions of gallons of contaminated water could be produced if the fracking industry expands and that this presents hazards on the M1 and the roads around the Thorpe Hesley and/or Ecclesfield area with massive HGV movements and significant risk of accidents, spillage, congestion, diesel pollution and road damage. There is also deep concern that dumping this waste water into the River Don system could cause substantial environmental damage, just as the river has shown great improvements in water quality and expansion of wildlife in recent years. Amanda Cheetham of Frack Free Penistone and Stocksbridge said: “We are appalled that dirty frack waste, full of all sorts of
contaminants, including hazardous chemicals, and things like radon which cannot be removed and is carcinogenic, is heading our way. We must do all we can to stop this happening. The FCC Environment site, next to Morrison’s, has been identified by INEOS as the destination for lorries carrying frack waste from sites all around. The increased fumes, the risk of spills, the poisoning of the River Don are all areas of real concern for us and this must be stopped.” Dave Hansell of Stocksbridge and Upper Don Labour Party said: “Local residents need to be made aware of the potential hazards that this proposal causes. High volumes of HGV traffic carrying harmful substances through this residential area is neither safe nor desirable and the impact on the River Don will be felt along the length of the river. “So much time, effort and money have been invested in improving the environment in this area and great strides have been made in cleaning up the river. We cannot stand by and let this be put in jeopardy.”

BIKES SEIZED
WEDNESDAY September 27 saw South Yorkshire Police’s off road bike team carry out an operation in Smithy Wood, Chapeltown and it wasn’t long before they came across two bikes being ridden illegally. After stopping the riders, it didn’t take long to identify that the orange KTM was stolen. It was taken from the rider and will be returned to the rightful owner shortly. An investigation is now underway to ascertain whether the man riding the bike was involved in its theft, whether he has handled stolen goods or whether he was an unsuspecting buyer. Regardless of the outcome of that investigation, as with the rider of the second bike he was riding illegally. They will be processed accordingly. Be warned - the bike team will be working throughout our area over the next few weeks.

Viv said: “Teaching gives me a real feeling of achievement. It’s great to help to change people’s lives by enabling them to successfully achieve the qualifications needed to study courses leading to their chosen career. “17 past students got in touch in the summer to let me know they had achieved
first class degrees after leaving college and, when I recently broke my arm, all the NHS staff who treated me were former students. High Green church ransacked by vandals yet again IN the early hours of the morning of Saturday September 30, St Mary’s R.C. Church in High Green was once again broken into and badly vandalised. The culprits gained entry through the stained glass windows, which were destroyed two weeks ago, causing much more damage. This time, while inside the church, they have destroyed an internal stained glass window, ransacked the parish office and stolen money. One charity box in the porch had money which was to help friends of the Service Sisters in the Congo supported by the parish. Parish Priest, Fr. Andrew Browne, told Look Local: “Everyone is sickened by the severity of the damaged caused, deeply saddened by the events coming so quickly after two other incidents of this sort. “The stolen money can never be replaced. It will be a huge amount of work to restore the stained glass windows to their former glory. There will have to be a enormous amount of extra external se-
curity put in place, the cost of which will have to be found from parishioners own offerings. “The parishioners at both Sunday Masses were shocked to their core at such disrespect for their sacred building and the heart of parish life. Last time they wondered why? This time they wonder who could do such a thing? “Their heartache at such evil behaviour will continue for some time to come, but have every confidence they will rise above the destruction and become stronger as a community.” Images from the parish CCTV system have been given to the police and it is hoped that more results can come from that. If anybody has any other information, please call the police. Fr. Browne continued: “Thanks go to the police who have done everything they can to help the parish in the circumstances. Thanks also to the Canon Simon Bessant and the parish of St. Saviours for welcoming us in using their church when needed.”

SUPERTRAM RAIL REPLACEMENT WORKS BACK ON TRACK SOUTH Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE) is making tracks towards commencing phase two of the rail replacement works on the Sheffield Supertram network. SYPTE is seeking tenders from suitably qualified contractors to carry out rail replacement works on sections of track, which are close to being life-expired, following over 50 million miles of tram travel along the network, since its launch in 1994. It is proposed to replace about 10km of embedded rail, where wear and tear means that its replacement is necessary to maintain the safe oper-
ation of tram services. These works are a continuation of the first phase, carried out between 2013 and 2015 on Sheffield’s tram system, operated by Stagecoach Supertram, when approximately 15km of embedded rail was replaced. Work is proposed to take place over the summers of 2018 and 2019 as part of SYPTE’s commitment to protect the long-term future operation of tram and tram train in South Yorkshire. The estimated cost of the second phase of construction works is circa £12.5m and any companies wishing to apply for the contract can do so at www.sypte.co.uk/contracts.

Dog walkers puzzled over deer remains in Chapeltown A NUMBER of dog walkers have been left mystified after the carcasses of four deer were found near Whitley Hall. One of the walkers, Rosemary Haywood, has been looking into the macabre discovery and now believes that they were dumped by someone who had been trying to sell the meat. Rosemary told Look Local: “At first I suspected that they may have been hunted on the grounds, I couldn’t really tell because they were so badly decomposed. Someone with a gun and a red pick-up truck was seen nearby. “However, after speaking to a butcher who walks his dogs round there, he said they were definitely red deer – the closest place you find them is Scotland. He also said the heads and hooves were removed to make them lighter to transport.”
Rosemary was first made aware of the remains of the deer - two adult and two youngsters – on Tuesday evening when speaking to another dog walker who said that the smell had made her feel sick. She contacted the police, RSPCA and Environmental Agency but said that none of them were interested. “I did try to raise our concerns with a number of authorities but came to a brick wall,” Rosemary explained. “It may just be dumped meat and not as suspicious as first thought but it still creates an upsetting sight and terrible smell for dog walkers who sometimes talk their children nearby.”

Councillors negotiate new school bus services with SYPTE ECCLESFIELD Parish Councillors have secured a host of new measures from South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE) to provide services for the Parish to Notre Dame High School, in Ranmoor. Problems had arisen following the cancellation of the previous BrightBus school bus service, and pupils, parents and teachers have been complaining that the new service was not an adequate replacement. Labour councillors Zoe Sykes and Garry Weatherall had taken up the concerns of Ecclesfield constituents direct with SYPTE and a detailed set of measures has now been put forward as a response. SYPTE have confirmed that an extra bus (number 83b) will be added to Notre Dame School from Ecclesfield - at 0725 arriving at Notre Dame School at 0849, with the Service 780 morning journey being retimed to ensure it arrives at school on time Cllrs Sykes and Weatherall raised concerns about the safety
of children waiting for the new buses and in response SYPTE have committed the 782 Service, for the morning journey, to have a minor route change to now pick up at Grenoside, The Angel at 0808. The new change will encourage pupils to wait at a safer location and reduces the wait time for those using a connecting service from High Green. Service 784’s morning journey will operate a revised route (due to service 83b being provided instead for some pupils), starting at Chapeltown at 0736. This morning bus will no longer serve High Street, Cross Hill, The Common or Mill Road in Ecclesfield. In Shirecliffe this bus will operate direct via Moonshine Lane and Shirecliffe Road no longer serving Herries Road or Norwood Avenue. There was also a concern about ensuring that buses arrive on time for the start of school. As a result the 786 Service, morning journey, is now retimed to depart Queens Road at 0803 to ensure it arrives at the school gates on time. Labour Parish Councillor and West Ecclesfield City Council-
lor Zoe Sykes remarked that she was pleased SYPTE have taken on board the concerns she has raised: “I am very encouraged by the response of the Passenger Transport Executive. It was always going to be a difficult transitional period following the untimely demise of BrigthBus, but regardless the previous arrangement was not sufficient for many. Whilst in the current financial climate it would never be possible for SYPTE to replicate completely the former BrightBus route and service, and Sheffield City Council have no direct responsibly here, I hope the new arrangements will satisfy parents, teachers and pupils alike. However Cllr Sykes also added caution about the announcement. She added: “On paper the changes seem reasonable and appropriate, but it is essential that those affected continue to give their feedback. I am encouraging constituents to let me know how the new service works in practice, after which I will again take up any concerns with SYPTE to try to find a solution.”

FAMILY EVENTS IN PENISTONE TWO fantastic family events have been announced for Penistone. On Saturday October 28, something strange is happening in the spooky Market Barn! Graham EVANS
The moment that you died, My heart was torn in two, One side filled with heartache, The other died with you. I often lie awake at night, When the world is fast asleep, and take a walk down memory lane, With tears upon my cheeks, Remembering you is easy, I do it everyday, But missing you is heartache That never goes away. I hold you tightly within my heart And there you will remain, Until the joyous day arrives, That we will meet again. Love always, Donna & Den xx
You meant so much to all of us You were special and that’s no lie You brightened up the darkest day And the cloudiest sky.

Your smile alone warmed hearts Your laugh was like music to hear I would give absolutely anything To have you well and standing near. Not a second passes When you’re not on our minds Your love we will never forget The hurt will ease in time. Many tears I have seen and cried They have all poured out like rain I know that you are happy now And no longer in any pain.
Lots of love, Billie-Jo, Brad & Skyla-Grey. xxx
Brother
God saw you getting tired And a cure was not to be, So he put his arms around you and whispered, Come to me. With tearful eyes we watch you, And saw you pass away And although we loved you dearly We could not make you stay., A golden heart stopped beating Hard working hands at rest God broke our hearts to prove us He only takes the best. Lots of love, Shaz & Les xx
Graham Evans Brother
God looked around his garden And he found an empty place Heaven looked down upon this earth And saw your tired face. He put his arms around you and Lifted you to rest Gods garden must be beautiful He always takes the best. He knew that you was suffering He knew you were in pain He knew that you would never Get well on earth again. He saw the road was getting rough And the hills were hard to climb So he closed your weary eyelids And whispered ‘peace be thine’. It broke our hearts to lose you But you didn’t go alone For part of us went with you the day God called you home. Loving sisters Linda, Christine, Denise, Lorraine and families x x x x

Would like to thank all their family and friends for the lovely cards and gifts they received.
Timely reminder Dear Sir, I wish to reply on two points from the above titled letter from Dave Hansell in letters dated 28/9/17. I have not read the letter from Mr Graham which he is replying to due to having been away when it was published but wish to raise the following:
the UK actually voted on this). No matter how I or the rest of us voted in EU parliamentary elections this would remain the case as on our own we could never out vote these blocks. We could never by voting alter the membership of 90% of MEPs, these are elected by the rest of Europe who have no idea on what a geordie a scouse or a Yorkshireman thinks about or is concerned with just as I could not tell you what a Latvian is concerned about. When we leave the EU the Henry VIII powers are needed because of the sheer number of laws that may need altering but if the Tories alter them to such an extent that I am not happy with what they are doing then at the next election I can vote against them as can everyone else and my vote will have a direct result on the composition of the UK parliament if enough people vote the same as me, if they do not vote the same as me well that’s called democracy.
Dave’s first paragraph refers to “accurately identifying what is taking place” and further in his letter he states the “official opposition ( Labour Party ) did actually take a position of supporting Letters the vote to trigger the UK exit”. Unfortunately Dave since the EU vote according to a tabloid recent By-election study the Labour party’s official stance together with what Labour Party shadow ministers have Dear Editor stated would be the stance has changed 110 times, I have just seen an e-mail sent to the Parish so I don’t think anyone including the Labour Party Council regarding the Parish Council vacancy for itself is able to accurately identify what is taking I am not a natural Tory voter but last time I could place. a councillor. not vote Labour due to it being London-centric and The words blackmail and extortion are the words The second point I wish to reply to is about remembering the last socialist Labour government, Brexiteers wanting to “take back democratic I have no wish to repeat it. A lot of people appeared that came to mind. control” yet appear happy for ministers to have the to trust the Tories on this last issue as the Tories Any individual or group can ask for a by-election, Henry VIII powers which allows change without increased their vote by approx 10,000 cutting Angela all they need is 10 High Green residents to ask for parliamentary scrutiny just like the EU. With the success of the steel and engineering industries in Sheffield, the area began to recover as there was an increased demand for suburban housing.
The arrival of the tram in 1903 was a big boost to the development of the suburb; it initially ran as far as the top of Parkside Road before extending to Middlewood in 1913. House building continued until around 1909 when most of present day Hillsborough’s road infrastructure had been created.

A DREAM FOR HORROR FANS AS CELLULOID SCREAMS RETURNS CELLULOID Screams: Sheffield Horror Film Festival returns to the Showroom Cinema in the city centre on Friday October 20 for a weekend packed full of the best new and classic horror. Now in its ninth year, the festival has become extremely popular and has once again sold out of weekend passes and there are just a few tickets left for individual events now. The festival opens on Friday with a screening of American horror The Endless before a special screening of Borley Rectory. Director Ashley Thorpe will be in attendance for a Q&A after the film. The tale of the haunting at Borley Rectory is a legendary one, which caught the imagination of the general public in the 1920s. Over six years in the making, Ashley Thorpe’s visually stunning tale of “the most haunted house in England” is unlike any horror film you’ve seen in recent memory. Combining live action, rotoscoping and digital animation techniques, Borley Rectory is a fascinating and enthralling experience that is as haunting as the events it depicts. Following on from this is director Trent Haaga’s, 68 Kill - a lurid black comedy which will take you on a murderous road trip; pure trailer-park trash with a sleazy punk rock edge, and plenty of violent shocks along the way. Highlights of Saturday include a special anthology screening of TV hit show Inside Number Nine with special guests Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton – two of the League of Gentlemen creators. There will also be a mystery film screening and a 40th anniversary screening of Italian classic Suspiria from legendary director Dario Argento. The festival comes to a fantastic close on Sunday October 23 with a 30th anniversary showing of Hellraiser with special guests Nicholas Vince and Geoff Portass. This is followed by the UK premiere of Creep 2 and finally, Better Watch Out, a Australian horror film set at Christmas. For more information and to buy tickets, see www.celluloidscreams.co.uk Inside Number Nine stars Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton will be at a Q&A at the festival

FOLLOWING on from this year’s amazing Tour de Yorkshire which passed through the borough, Barnsley has been named as one of the eight host locations for the 2018 event.
lined the route and generated £64 million for the Yorkshire economy. The action was also beamed live in 180 countries and attracted 9.7 million global TV viewers on Eurosport and ITV alone.
The locations were unveiled today for the newly expanded fourth edition of the race. The stages will begin or end in:
Cllr Roy Miller, Cabinet Spokesperson for Place, said: “We’re delighted to host part of this thrilling race which has become firmly established as a fantastic event for Barnsley and Yorkshire. People came out in their thousands to enjoy this year’s race and next year’s will be even better. Cycling is popular across our borough; we’re lucky to have many cycle routes and beautiful scenery. It promises to be a fantastic event for people of all ages, showcasing everything that is brilliant about Barnsley.”

Organisers Welcome to Yorkshire and the Amaury Sport Organisation (A.S.O.) revealed the locations for the newly expanded four-day men’s race which will take place from Thursday 3 to Sunday 6 May. The Asda Women’s Tour de Yorkshire – which is doubling in size from one to two days - will be held over Thursday May 3 and Friday May 4. The third edition took place in April and saw the race go from strength to strength once again. A record 2.2 million spectators
Sir Gary Verity, Chief Executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, said: “The Tour de Yorkshire is a true success story and in just three years it has grown to become one of the best attended and most dramatic races on the cycling calendar. “Of course, with the men’s race being extended to four days and the women’s race now being held over two, it means we can visit more parts of the county and I know our eight start and finish locations will put on a real show.”

HINCHCLIFFE TOP IN CUSWORTH PENISTONE Footpath Runners’ Scott Hinchcliffe won the competitive Cusworth 10k road race in Doncaster at the weekend, beating his own recentlyestablished club 10k record in the process. Hinchcliffe came home in a time of 32.37, leading home a large contingent of PFR members taking part in the latest leg of the club championship on the gently undulating course through the picturesque villages of Cusworth and Sprotbrough. Gareth
Cooke finished fourth in 35.53. Third man back for the club was marvellous Martin Ball, who was also first V45 in 37.34. First woman back for the club was Laura Gill in 44.48 (pb). Mick Quinn and Sue Higham won age category prizes. The Hodgson Brothers Mountain Relay, run over four legs, each leg run in pairs, the club’s team finished 52nd out of 69 teams in challenging wet weather which had to be shortened due to the conditions.
At the Congleton Half Marathon, Keith Gordon completed the challenging course in 1:51.38. At the Wickersley Chase 4.4 miles trail race, held near Rotherham as the latest part of the KMR series, Kevin Bowskill finished in 34.05, Ketih Gordon 36.25 and Dave Needham finished first V70 in 39.52. John Tomlinson, Sarah-Jones Morris and Brent Lindsay completed the Ian Roberts Memorial Fell Race near Holmfirth, run over 5.5 miles.
Mixed bag of results for Chapeltown Hockey Club CHAPELTOWN men first team were away at Preston seconds and it was a 5-2 win for in Division One, putting them well up the table. Large and Balachandar led the scoring with a brace each. The ladies first team were away at Sheffield Hallam seconds, loosing 4-0. The men’s seconds were at home to Slazengers threes. A convincing win at 14-0 for the seconds who played well but still have room for improvement with all the goals coming in the first half! Latest indications show that they are currently one of the stronger teams within the division. Rowley hit four and Lloyd and Palmer both scored hat-tricks. Ladies seconds were at home to Doncaster Independent Ladies. A tight game but eventually Chapeltown came out on top winning 4-3 though they still consider themselves a work in progress. Cooper was the star player with two goals. Ladies thirds lost 7-1 to Sheffield Hallam fifth team.

The men’s third team played the fourth team and it was the third team who claimed the bragging rights with a 2-0 win. More info on http://www.pitchero.com/clubs/chapeltownhc
Tigers crowned champions SHEFFIELD TIGERS’ 15-year wait for league glory is over as they were crowned Speedway GB Championship Champions on a night to remember at Ipswich.
“I’ve been a rider for the club, I’ve been the captain, I’m team manager now and it feels amazing to be a league Champion with Sheffield again,” Stead said.
Already holding a 16-point lead from their home leg, the Tigers claimed victory in Suffolk too, snatching a 46-44 win in a last race decider.
“We finished top of the league for a reason and thankfully the boys were able to continue their superb form in the play-offs and we deserve this.
The Owlerton outfit crucially restricted the hosts to just two heat advantages in the opening eight races before coming on strong in the latter stages to inflict just a second home defeat of the year on Ipswich.
“This bunch of riders have made my life so much easier because they’re passionate, they’re hungry for success, they’re dedicated and they’ve been a pleasure to work with.
It was a night that will live long in the memory of everyone connected to the Sheffield Tigers, including team manager Simon Stead who was a part of the last league winning side back in 2002.
“The team spirit has been unbelievable all season long and I’m delighted for everyone connected with the club. “It’s been a long time coming has this. “Obviously it’s great for the team we’ve got at Sheffield right
now, but for the management, the staff and of course the supporters, it’s moments like this that you’ll treasure for the rest of your life. “While we knew we’d done a great job at home on Thursday, we knew we couldn’t afford to be complacent and we had to treat it as a one meeting decider. “In all honesty, the plan was to always come to Ipswich and win on the night. “While we knew we had to ride sensibly, we never once talked about defending a lead. “That’s not a mentality I like and it’s certainly not the mentality of Sheffield Speedway. “We wanted to come here, finish the job off in style and I think it’s fair to say we did just that.
“On behalf of myself, the riders and the rest of the management, I just want to say a big thanks to the many Sheffield fans who came to Ipswich to support the boys and to all of those who have been through the journey with us all season long.” Sheffield’s 2017 campaign is far from over yet though - and upcoming fixture details will be confirmed in due course. IPSWICH 44: Cameron Heeps 13+1, Danny King 9, Kyle Newman 7, Rory Schlein 7, Nathan Greaves 5+1, Alfie Bowtell 3+3, Justin Sedgmen R/R. SHEFFIELD 46: Scott Nicholls 12, Josh Bates 9, Kyle Howarth 9, Jan Graversen 7+1, Lasse Bjerre 6+1, Todd Kurtz 3+1, Georgie Wood 0. Sheffield win 99-81 on aggregate.

In first place was Rabbits Captain Richard Needham also with a great nett score of 61 but with a better back nine. Division One was a closely run thing with the top three players only split by one shot. In third place was Paul Blake with a great four under par score of 62 nett. Also on four under par nett was
John Horton which got him into second place.
est gross score of three under par again this week.
The winner with a great score of 61 nett (five under par) was Nick Wood. Nick must be in a good run of form as he has been in the top seven eight times out of the last eight competitions.
Sunday September 24 was a Stableford competition which is open to golfers of all handicaps. In third place was David Buxton with 38 points. In second place came Ian Sedgwick with 39 points but with a terrific 44 points and winner was Steve Clayton.
Also in a great run of form is lowest handicapped golfer, James Walton, who had the low-

Of the remaining golfers, third place went to John Moss on 33 points, in second place was John Methley on 35 points. The winner was Tony Peers also on 35 points.

Steels slip up at Corby By Gerry Lucas
Corby Town 2-1 Stocksbridge Park Steels
STEELS failed to win away at Corby Town who had new manager Steve Kinniburgh in charge for his first game. Corby had a chance when Leon Lobjoit hit a volley just wide of the far post. However, seconds later an excellent through ball found Lobjoit, he ran on and past outrushing keeper David Reay to calmly flick home. The visitors found Corby’s defence in excellent form, although it took a last-ditch tackle by Jamie Anton to stop Richard Stirrup in his tracks. A good save by Reay denied Jordan Crawford’s effort from 20 yards, while Corby had another chance when Ben Diamond’s shot beat Reay in goal, but Liam McFadyen cleared.

LAST-MINUTE HEARTBREAK FOR PIGS Stocksbridge 17-18 Skipton
STOCKSBRIDGE RUFC first team had victory cruelly snatched from their grasp in the last minute, as they lost 17-18 at home to Skipton on Saturday. The Pigs, coming off the back of an impressive win against Leeds Medics & Dentists last week, were full of confidence and were the first to score when Sam Whitaker dotted down under the posts after both Ben Senior and Liam O’Leary had gone close. Adam Frith converted the try to give an early lead to Stocksbridge, but a determined Skipton team, kept themselves in the game with some strong defence and harassing tactics at the breakdown. Stocksbridge struggled to assert their superior mobility on their opponents and instead got drawn into a scrappy game that suited the visitors much more. The Pigs lacked composure and failed to exert any sustained pressure on their opposition, despite the advantage of the hill and the only other score of the half was a Skipton penalty that Stocksbridge lead 7-3 at the break.

Skipton were the first on the scoresheet after half time with another penalty to make it 7-6 and seemed content to try and play Stocksbridge at their own game, repeatedly kicking the ball into the bottom corner. However, knowing they had to raise their game if they were to take the winning points, Stoksbridge battled brightly, retaining much more possession and after Adam Frith had spotted an opening on the blind side, winger Joe Jones broke free from the defence and committed the Skipton full-back, before giving the ball to Ben Senior for his second try in as many games.

Frith converted once more to increase the Pigs’ lead to eight points and they went further ahead five minutes later when Frith added a penalty kick, pushing the home team out to a 17-6 lead. A period of sustained pressure then followed for the Pigs, as the Skipton full-back continually pinned them back in the bottom corner. The home team defended valiantly, but the pressure finally told in the 65th minute, when the visiting left winger managed to squeeze over for a try, which was well converted and gave a score of 17-13 to the home team. Continuing in the same vein, Skipton kept the pressure on and the Pigs were soon back on their own try line, where they were to spend the last seven minutes of the game. Stocksbridge continually fended off wave after wave of Skipton attackers and with time almost up ad after great defence from Danny Burrows, they were awarded a scrum two metres from their own try-line. With Stocksbridge only having to hold on to the ball for a minute more, a wayward pass missed it’s man and the horrified Pigs team could only look on as the Skipton flanker dived on the ball over the try line to deliver a heartbreaking final score of 18-17 to the visitors. It was a bitter blow to a team who’d battled bravely for so long and rightly deserved the victory, but who in truth, should have been more clinical in the first half and put the game beyond reach. There were some positives to come out of the game, notably an impressive return to first team rugby for Luke Birch and fine performances from substitutes Connor Brown and Danny Burrows, both of whom will be pushing for a start this Saturday, when Baildon are the visitors to Coal Pit Lane.
