Children challenge Council over dangerous junction

CHILDREN at Oughtibridge Primary School have written letters to members of Sheffield City Council regarding the road safety issues at the junction of Bridge Hill, Station Lane and Orchard Street in the village. After witnessing an accident in which a cyclist was seriously injured, many children arrived at school distressed and anxious. They are now hoping to persuade the councillors to take action to improve

the safety of pedestrians, motorists and cyclists.

putting these skills into practice by writing to Sheffield City Council to express their concerns.

The cyclist that was struck at the junction, a vet, is recovering from the ordeal.

Jenna Collins, a teacher at Oughtibridge Primary School, said: “The children were really engaged with this project and I believe it’s because it is important to them and their families.”

On Monday November 6, the Year Fives visited the junction with Bradfield Parish Councillor Miriam Cates. They discussed the problems they observe on a regular basis and put forward their ideas for solving the traffic problem.

tion in Oughtibridge, Wharncliffe Side and Stocksbridge.” Joshua wrote, “It is unacceptable for children to watch such tragic accidents.” George wrote, “Walking to school is scary because petrifying accidents are happening nearby.” Neve concluded her letter with, “Why are we waiting for another horrific accident to happen to an innocent person?” The children had many ideas and debated amongst themselves what solutions could be put in place. However, they all agreed that the situation could be improved if motorists reduce their speed

as they drive down Orchard Street and if all pedestrians, cyclists and motorists took extra care at the junction and crossing. Terry Barrow, a resident of Oughtibridge and Vice-Chair of Stocksbridge and Upper Don Labour Party, is collating evidence of incidents. She has been informed of at least five accidents at the junction in the last three months. If anyone has any concerns or issues to report, they can contact her on 0114 2864177.
