TOUR TO RETURN TO PENISTONE BARNSLEY’S full involvement in the 2018 Tour de Yorkshire has been announced and will see the second day of racing start from the town centre on Friday May 4 before winding through Penistone, Oxspring and Thurgoland.

A press conference held by Welcome to Yorkshire in Halifax revealed that the cyclists will ride through the borough for the second stage of the race known as ‘Yorkshire Heritage’. The event, which will be held from Thursday May 3 to Sunday May 6, is a flagship cycling event in the UK and international calendar and will see top teams and cycling stars riding through Barnsley’s roads and rolling countryside. The fourth edition of the race has been extended to four stages over the Bank Holiday weekend with an extra day of men’s racing and the women’s race doubled to two days. The peloton will start outside Barnsley’s impressive town hall and head towards Penistone. The route ventures into Worsbrough and the first mountains classification points are up for grabs at Blacker Hill. With those in the bag, the race will pass through Elsecar and out towards Wentworth Woodhouse. Barnsley’s race date on ‘Star Wars day’, May 4, and is an easy one to remember, and there will be plenty of

things to do and see for cycling fans and Star Wars fans alike, with a special exhibition at Experience Barnsley Museum and Discovery Centre and activities on the day. A new webpage has been created as a hub for all the latest news and information and the council will be sharing updates on social media between now and the big event. Local businesses on the route are invited to attend one of four workshops delivered in partnership with race organisers Welcome to Yorkshire to find out how they can get involved. The first one will be at the Metrodome Leisure Complex on Thursday January 18 at 5pm. Cllr Sir Steve Houghton, CBE, Leader of the Council said: “It’s a great honour to be selected as a start location for the Tour de Yorkshire and we’re sure that once again the people of Barnsley will get behind the riders and give them a great welcome. “There will be plenty of ways for residents, schools and businesses to get involved and this is a wonderful opportunity to showcase all that Barnsley has to offer.” For more information about the event visit www.barnsley.gov.uk/ TDY or the council’s Tour de Yorkshire event page on Facebook. High Green charity names leading politician as patron THE Rt Hon Robert Halfon MP, Chair of Commons Education Select Committee, was named as Patron of Paces on a recent visit. The influential Chair of the House of Commons Education Select Committee has been named as a Patron of Paces, the High Green charity and school which supports children, adults and families with cerebral palsy and motor disorders. The Rt Hon Robert Halfon MP, a former Education Minister who himself has cerebral palsy, accepted the invitation to take up the role as he visited the charity’s High Green campus on Friday December 8. During the visit, which came at the end of Paces’ 20th anniversary year, Mr Halfon met with some of the school’s pupils, teachers and staff and heard about the work of the charity and its innovative conductive education programme to support those living with motor disorders. Rob Halfon MP said: “I care passionately about supporting young people with disabilities and Paces is a national centre of excellence for supporting those living with cerebral palsy and motor disorders. “When I was invited to become a Patron, I took no time at all to accept and am proud to support and promote this beacon of excellence and great education for children, young

people, adults and families with their outstanding school and innovative conductive education programmes.” Mr Halfon was accompanied on the visit by Dr Spencer Pitfield, Interim Chief Executive of Paces, who had invited him to become a Patron. Speaking about the appointment, he said: “I have known Rob for a number of years and have been impressed by his commitment to ensuring young people have the best start in life – no matter what challenges they may face. This commitment makes him the perfect choice for our Patron. “As Paces ends our 20th anniversary year, the appointment of such an influential Patron is an indication of our commitment to continue to find innovative ways of supporting young people, adults and families who live with cerebral palsy and motor disorders.” Ann Menzies-Blythe, Chair of Trustees at Paces, said: “I would like to thank Rob for both coming to Paces to see and hear about our work and for saying ‘yes’ to our invitation to be our Patron. “We are passionate about the work we do here to support those of all ages with motor disorders, I know Rob shares that passion and I look forward to working together to inform more people about what we do and how we can help in the months ahead.”

Students light up BIG challenge awards A TEAM of pupils from Stocksbridge High School are turning their “light bulb” moment business enterprise into a new venture after winning an award in the city wide BIG Challenge.

The enterprise initiative is aimed at encouraging pupils in years seven to 11 to come up with their own business idea, establish it as a venture and successfully run it. Year seven pupils Noah Kitchen, Harrison Dimelow and James Wheeler entered their business ‘Literary Lanterns’ which upcycles glass jars into attractive lanterns incorporating extracts from classic books into the design.

As part of the challenge the pupils had to look at all aspects of the business including marketing, logo design, product development and accounting.

The attractive lanterns feature classic books such as Alice in Wonderland and can be seasonally themed as well as featuring gardening and cookery books. More than 230 teams entered the BIG challenge this year and Literary Lanterns were selected as one of the eight finalists to achieve the Flying Start Award. The award was presented to the team at a ceremony held on December 6.

The lanterns come in all different shapes and sizes and are lit up using electric tealights – 80 per cent of the materials used are recycled.

Annabel Plumtree said: “We were really impressed with the team when they came to Fox Valley to put forward their business ideas to be considered for our market.

The team approached Fox Valley’s Centre Manager Annabel Plumtree to apply to be part of the centre’s regular market and will be selling their award winning lanterns at the Christmas themed market on Saturday December 16.

“The lanterns look really lovely and are a perfect product for the Christmas market on December 16th. We wish the Literary Lanterns team all the very best with the venture and hope everyone comes along to the market on December 16 to support them.”

MP asks for lower speed limit outside school

ANGELA Smith MP has written to Sheffield City Council to ask for a 20 mile an hour speed limit is put in place around Lound Junior School, on Loundside. She has also asked if more parking restrictions and other mea-

sure can be put in place to make crossing this very busy road safer.

This is after she was informed by the school that parents and other are parking cars in an inconsiderate way when they pick up or drop of their children and

drivers are often speeding on the road.

making it difficult for children to see any traffic coming along.

Even when they don’t speed, parents are saying the 30mph speed limit is still too fast for a road outside a school.

Despite PCSOs and the council enforcing restrictions already in place and the school asking parents not to park near the school, cars are still being parked nearby and drivers are still speeding.

To make matters worse the school is on the brow of a hill

With the school being on the brow of a hill it makes crossing

the road difficult for anyone but especially so for young children.

“I have therefore asked the Council to consider putting in place measures that will slow the traffic down and make crossing the road easier for all concerned.”

Commenting Angela, said: “Everyone is concerned that if something is not done around the school eventually there is going to be an accident of some sort.

Get your school applications in COUNCIL leaders are urging families to apply for their child’s primary school before the closing date of January 15 and use all three preferences. Parents will find out the outcome of their primary school application on April 16 next year. Parents are encouraged to make sure they fill in all three preferences in order to keep their options open. Parents can express up to three preferences but some parents choose not to. Putting down three preferences does not reduce the chance of parents getting their preferred option, but does provide alternatives if the preferred school is over-subscribed. Families are also encouraged to name their catchment school as places cannot be reserved for catch-

ment pupils where a positive preference for this school has not been expressed. Sheffield City Council’s admissions team deals with thousands of applications for secondary and primary schools every year. This year is the first year parents can apply to the city’s new school; Astrea Academy on the Old Pye Bank site, in the North East of the city. Astrea Academy will provide places for children and young people aged two to 19. If families need help with the form they should contact 0114 273 5790 or email ed-admissions@sheffield.gov.uk

Mugging on Burncross Road A MAN was mugged on Burncross Road on his way to attending a class at Chapeltown and Burncross Community Centre on Monday evening. The community centre posted about the incident on their Facebook page, asking for witnesses to come forward. Bob Payne, who lived with his family in Stocksbridge, was a patient at St Luke’s as he battled against the cancer that eventually took his life.

And it was in recognition of the support that the whole family received that Dan undertook his ten-day challenge from Guildhall Square in Derry to the Mourne Country Hotel in Newry, Co Down, raising a final total of £1,193. “This was an extraordinary achievement for Dan to undertake, especially as it was a solo

effort and he didn’t even have a support vehicle to back him up,” said St Luke’s Community Fundraising Manager Megan Senior. “It is this kind of generous fundraising activity that really does make an enormous difference to the lives of our patients and their families.”

The post read: “One of the gentlemen who comes to the Monday evening classes was mugged by a couple of youths on Burncross Road making his way up to Chapeltown and Burncross Community Centre tonight. “They had scarves over their faces and hoodies on, and have made a nasty mess of this gentleman’s face as they punched him. Thankfully, they didn’t get his

phone or wallet as demanded, but he’s bruised and battered.

a group of about seven or eight youths, aged around 18.

“The police are involved and if anyone local to Burncross Road has any information the police may find helpful, then please get in touch and we can supply an incident number. I’m so upset and angry for this gentleman he travels for hours by bus from the other side of Sheffield, then walks the final stretch to get up to class just to do something nice for himself, and this is what happens! Despicable!”

It is believed that it was two of these youths who attacked the victim before running off towards Chapeltown.

The incident happened at around 8.15pm opposite the Texaco garage on the evening of Monday December 4.

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101, quoting incident number 997 of December 4.

The victim, who wishes to remain anonymous, said: “I’m shaken up and I’ve a split lip and a bruised and swollen face but I’m otherwise okay. “They didn’t get anything from me despite demanding my phone and money.”

A spokesman for South Yorkshire Police said there were reports of

Owls duo visit Chapeltown school OWLS duo Glenn Loovens and Morgan Fox paid a visit to Windmill Hill Primary School last week to talk to the pupils about the importance of reading and writing. The pair joined a class at the school in Chapeltown and took questions from the youngsters, ranging from favourite books to life at Sheffield Wednesday.

REMOVALS & STORAGE

After the lesson, Glenn and Morgan posed for photos and signed autographs for the children, before enjoying a guided tour of the school to meet as many young supporters as possible. Teacher at Windmill Hill School, Nicola Wood, said: “We’re very grateful for Glenn and Morgan coming to visit us.

“The Avante Team would like to wish their customers a Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year!”

Serving the local community since 2002

“It is hoped this opportunity will really spur on some of our children to read more and understand how important reading is.” Skipper Glenn added: “It was great to visit the school and meet the staff and children. “It’s important that, as players, we go out into the community and if we’ve managed to inspire any youngsters today then it makes it all worthwhile. “Thank you to everyone at Windmill Hill for having us!”

Children’s Christmas art goes on display FOR the last three years, children at Stocksbridge Junior School have created art work on the theme of Christmas which has been displayed at the Stocksbridge Christian Centre on the corner of Cedar Road and Pot House Lane. Among the art work for this year, children in Years Three and Four have made craft works which are innovative recreations of the manger scene using electric lighting,

The children’s art is now on display in the Stocksbridge Christian Centre every Saturday from December 16 until January 27 from 10am to 12 noon in the church sanctuary. Everyone is warmly invited to see the wonderfully creative work which the children have made expressing what they’ve learned about Christmas. Refreshments are served in the church hall.

Local News

Campaign to save our local bank OVER 200 people signed a petition in two hours on Saturday calling for the NatWest Bank to reconsider closing its branches in Stocksbridge and Penistone. The bank intends to close the two local branches in June 2018, leaving both towns without a bank. The petition, organised by Stocksbridge and Upper Don Labour Party, calls on the government to recommend that NatWest reconsiders its decision in light of the opposition it has generated.

Local residents who signed the petition expressed real concern about the impact on local people and small businesses in the area. Many were worried about security issues with online banking and didn’t believe this was an appropriate alternative for everyone, particularly those who are not regular internet users. The closure of both local branches, as well as Hillsborough and Firth Park, will mean that customers will be forced to travel into central Sheffield or Barnsley to access their banking services,

causing real difficulties for those dependent on public transport. The petition, which is supported by local MP, Angela Smith, will be presented to parliament in the new year if enough signatures are collected. Copies of the petition are available in various local shops on Manchester Road. Anyone concerned can add their name to reinforce the message that retaining a local bank is key to maintaining the vitality of the town centre.

SYSRP reminds motorists to drive safe this winter WITH snow and icy conditions expected in the next few days, the South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership (SYSRP) is re-issuing its winter driving advice. It is available below and also at www.sysrp.co.uk/winter In icy or snowy weather, the SYSRP advise that you do not travel unless your journey is essential. If you do decide to travel, take extra care and allow more time for your journey. When driving or riding in wintry weather: · Before setting off, check the news and weather to see if there is anything that may affect your journey - adverse weather, traffic reports or road clo-

sures. Bear in mind that weather conditions may be different at your destination. · Before you pull away ensure that all your windows are clear of ice and snow. Make sure that your windows and mirrors are demisted thoroughly. Remove excess snow and ice from your roof and bonnet which could fall into the path of other road users. · If you are riding a motorbike or bicycle ensure that your lights and brakes are working correctly, and consider wearing something both bright and reflective so that you can be easily seen by other road users.

Getting stronger in just 20 minutes a week at fit20 Fox Valley I’M still going for my weekly 20 minute session at fit20 and it’s certainly gone up a gear of late! The last time I went, on Thursday, a few of the weights went up a notch and I could certainly feel it, my muscles were ready to fail as each exercise ended and this is exactly what we’re looking for – to have two minutes on each of the five machines moving slowly and really feeling the weight on each one. However, the guidance I get from the personal trainers makes sure that I don’t suffer any injuries, after positioning myself on the machine, they’ll tell me how to adjust my posture so that I’m lifting correctly. It might be a shuffle to the left, tilt your head to the right or position your hands differently. Even just shuffling your toes an inch can make all the difference. Once I’ve started, they count to 10 slowly, I have to time it so that it’s a count of 10 pushing the weight and then a count of 10 bringing it back. All the time, I’m having little pointers suggested, whether it’s to breathe – I do sometimes forget – or to keep my knees over my feet when I’m doing a leg press.

· Be extra vigilant in rainy or snowy weather, or if the road is icy. Always drive at a speed which is appropriate to the road conditions, driving in as high a gear as possible and braking very gently. Stopping distances can be up to ten times greater in icy conditions. · Look out for motorcyclists and pedal cyclists who may have to swerve suddenly to avoid ice patches or other obstructions. Give gritter lorries plenty of room to operate if they are spreading salt and pass them with care if you are overtaking them. · In urban areas take extra care when manoeuvring around parked vehicles and when approach-

ing pedestrian crossings and junctions. On rural routes drive with care when approaching bends and for unexpected hazards. The SYSRP also recommend that you keep an emergency kit with your vehicle which includes a blanket, warm clothing and waterproof boots, a first aid kit, de-icer, and an ice scraper. A warm drink and some food supplies may also come in useful in the event you are delayed or your vehicle breaks down. For further advice consult your Highway Code, or get in touch with SYSRP by email, (enquiries@ sysrp.co.uk) by phone (01709 832455) or online (www.sysrp.co.uk).

POPULAR LIVE NATIVITY RETURNS TO STANNINGTON

After two minutes of each exercise, I hold the weight still for 10 seconds before slowly returning to the rest position. But there’s no time to recover, we’re straight on to the next exercise with no gap. That’s part of what makes fit20 different, you wouldn’t be able to do this in a normal busy gym where you have to wait for machines. I’m told that I’m now 11% stronger than when I started. I’m shown a graph which satisfyingly shows lots of lines making a steady increase! It’s a time of the year when a lot of people are thinking about changes they might want to make in the New Year. If you have exercise goals, visit https://fit20.co.uk/ and see how they could help you.

Mary and Joseph get ready to set off with the donkey at the last Nativity Live event HUNDREDS of spectators are expected to follow Stannington’s very own street nativity play, Christmas Live, which will tell the Christmas Story around the car parks of Stannington pubs and The Lomas Hall. The play uses live animals and a local cast, including a real baby. Christmas Live: Street Nativity takes place on Monday Decem-

ber 18, starting at 7pm at The Peacock Inn, Stannington Road. Mary and Joseph will set off with a donkey outside The Peacock before the shepherds with their sheep will be found outside The Rose & Crown (Minnie’s). The manger with baby is outside The Crown & Glove (Top House). In the final scene, the Three Kings arrive outside The Lomas Hall, travelling on horseback.

The audience will have plenty of opportunity to sing local carols, and afterwards to share mulled wine and mince pies, which will be served in Christ Church Hall after the hour-long play. There will be a collection for charities which support the homeless in Sheffield during the performance, to recall the circumstances of Jesus’ birth.

It’s not too late to make a will... Hello, I’m Jane Bowland, your local consultant of 10 years experience. We are experts in helping people arrange their wills, trusts and lasting powers of attorney. I specialise in helping all kinds of people gain peace of mind by providing professional estate planning services, but with a personal touch. I offer a FREE consultation without obligation for anybody who would like to know more about any of the following:

• Making a basic will • Setting up lasting powers of attorney • Protecting your home from care fees • Pre–paid funeral plans Having a Will in place ensures your assets go to who you choose. It makes the whole process much easier for the people you leave behind and it puts in black and white exactly what you want to happen, avoiding any misunderstanding or arguing. Setting up a Lasting Power of Attorney gives the people that YOU choose the legal right to look after your financial and personal affairs if you become unable to do so. Without one in place, your spouse, partner or family members are NOT automatically able

to take over. Make sure you avoid the distress this can cause you and your loved ones. I know that planning for the future is a very personal matter. Not everyone is able or wants to travel to an appointment in town to sort out their affairs. I can visit you at a convenient time in the comfort and privacy of your own home to discuss your circumstances. My visit and consultation is completely free and you are under no obligation

to do anything. If you decide to make any arrangements you can be safe in the knowledge that all my professional services and work are fully insured and Collective Legal Solutions are members of the Society of Will Writers, so all my clients are assured of being fully protected at all times. All my clients (and their families) that I have helped in the past have been very happy with my services and tell me they have gained great peace of mind knowing that they have sorted everything out.

Jane came to see my parents to help them protect the family home from any future care fees. She really made us all feel at ease, especially my parents. We had no idea what we could do to protect Mum and Dad. Having set up trusts and Lasting Power of Attorney’s, Mum and Dad can get on with their lives without worrying, knowing everything is now in place. Thank you Jane! Mrs Boyle and family, Ecclesfield

Housing development Great news that the new homes development in Deepcar is to go ahead. There is a current issue though with traffic volumes at peak times. Frequently in the morning rush traffic backs up from Penistone Road through Middlewood to the old Middlewood Tavern pub building. I hope that action will be taken to improve the flow because additional homes means more vehicles and will only increase delays and of course pollution from standing traffic. AS, Oughtibridge

Pay once, pay twice

On January 30 2017, Ecclesfield Parish Council (EPC) was informed by Sheffield City Council My first meeting as a Councillor at Ecclesfield that they were due a non-domestic rate rebate of Parish Council (EPC) went well, was given a £7,420.66, money that was originally paid by the mostly warm welcome, even a friendly offer to rate-payer of the Parish. join the Labour party. The money is part of the precept which the Council Precept going up, I opposed this, EPC got a good budget for each year and once approved is collected tax rebate this year, so I did not see the need. by the City Council through the domestic rates bill. Cllrs Anthea and John Brownrigg forced a vote Two thirds of the precept goes on the functioning on the issue, but Labour and Lib Dems joined up of the Parish Building and staffing costs with an approved overall figure for 2017-2018 of so increase was passed eight to three. £154,499.00. I proposed EPC grants be allocated equally to each ward, next year EPC grants pot is £30,000, For the next financial year, 2018-2019, EPC was we have six wards in EPC so £5,000 each ward. asking for an increase of £6,774,00 on the current Or split funds equally according to councillors year and so at the full Parish Council meeting on in each ward, which reflects size of wards. Both December 7 2017, I put a Notice of Motion forward ways have merits. Met with interest by some, proposing that there should be no percentage increase to the rate payer of the Parish and that the utter horror by other councillors. rate rebate should be used for this purpose. This I was allowed on the planning committee, was seconded by Cllr Anthea Brownrigg. but blocked from the finance committee, the councillor I replaced was on both, but the last As expected, the Labour and Liberal Democrat thing that some councillors want is me on the Councillors voted against leaving three councillors finance committee, I will challenge the decision, to vote for the motion – Cllr John Brownrigg, Cllr Anthea Brownrigg and Cllr David Ogle. if possible. credit where due. While I am representing High Green ward, I will try to add more of these life saving bits of kit (£1,500 each ish). I raised concerns about EPC employees involving themselves in EPC elections publicly, this was dismissed by councillors eight to three and public were excluded from this debate, which was ironic as employee of EPC published a very public letter on this very page on November 2.

The Hub food bank Just a reminder that we will be holding a collection for our food bank in the Co-op Stocksbridge between 10am and 2pm on Friday December 15.

All donations go towards helping our local families in need. Still a strong rumour that Santa himself Petition I started prior to being elected, on will be helping us. EPC is here to stay, you pay for it, ignoring it means you pay for another area that is dug in deep, on the EPC to be improved. Our EPC could be of fantastic good for our High Green, but only if we have representation from us, for us, in our High Green.

Right now, out of five councillors that represent High Green, I am the only one that represents High Green, lives in High Green, that is free of political party dogma and whip! SHEFFIELD Tigers will have a third new face in the team next season after signing James Shanes.

“It’s a great club and I’m really excited about the new challenge for me. I really can’t wait for the season to start.

Shanes, 20, spent last season in the Premiership with Poole and did a solid job in helping the Pirates reach the play-offs.

“As soon as Sheffield talked to me I knew it was where I wanted to be and we agreed everything pretty quickly.

Now he’s linking up with the Championship title holders – and he can’t wait! “I’m really pleased to be coming to Sheffield,” he said.

“Simon Stead is a good manager as well as he was a top rider until recently and he’s always good to listen to, so it’s all good.” Tigers co-promoter Damien Bates said: “We welcome James to Sheffield and we are confident he can do a good job.

Postponed games - Biggins makes Fleetwood debut THE cold weather hit local sport hard this week with Stocksbridge Park Steels and Stocksbridge RUFC having their games called off, as well as Penistone Church. However, on a more positive note for

Stocksbridge Park Steels, former player Harrison Biggins made his debut for Fleetwood Town following his summer move. Park Steels are away to Spalding on Saturday December 16, with the bus leaving at 11am. A

seat on the bus costs £5, contact the club for details. Their next home game is against Basford on Saturday December 23 with a 3pm kick off.

“He’s got the ability and potential to score some valuable points for the team and he’s an important piece in the jigsaw. He’s also very keen!” Shanes joins Jack Smith and Charles Wright in the newcomers group with Lasse Bjerre and Josh Bates confirmed from last season. Two places remain with Tigers looking to finalise things before Christmas. Tigers have vowed to stand by talented youngster Josh Bates as he battles with personal issues.

Brittany’s pride at representing English Colleges Football Association

Footpath Runners are top shufflers PENISTONE Footpath Runners had 26 members taking part in the final race of the Silkstone Shuffle series. Scott Hinchcliffe won the race by a considerable margin, setting a new course record of 24.43 in the process. Robin Clough was second man home, closely followed by Simon Pike. Laura Gill was first woman back in a new personal best of 31.29. Julie Darigala and Julia Johnson were first F40 and F50 runners respectively whilst Alan Knox finished first V60. Julia Johnson, Julie Darigala and Faye Williams finished first, second and third overall in the Silkstone Shuffle series, making it a clean sweep for the club.

BARNSLEY College student Brittany Sanderson has secured a place in the English Colleges Football Association national squad. The 18-year-old, who studies Sport, will have the opportunity to gain experience of playing at a higher level by representing the College in national recognised competitions. Brittany, a centre midfield who plays for FA Premier League club Huddersfield Town Ladies and Barnsley Sports Academy, will travel to St

George’s Park, the English Football Association’s National Football Centre, for a training camp before competing in a tournament in Barcelona.

Barnsley Sports Academy has really helped me improve my football, we train every Monday, Tuesday and Friday which works round our classes really well.”

Brittany is part of the Barnsley Sports Academy within college and has access to an Elite Sports Performance Bursary to fund equipment and travel.

Mark Ryan, Sport Programme Manager at the College, added: “Brittany is an excellent student who works extremely hard as an academic and a footballer for the Barnsley Sports Academy. She has displayed a big desire to achieve academic excellence, coupled with her motivation to play football.”

Brittany said: “I’m over the moon to have been selected to represent Barnsley College at national level.

In the overall series, the two Julias also ran out winners in their categories. At the Shittern Santa Saunter Fell Race, Daniel Limb was first club member back in 44.12, with John Tomlinson, Paul Fryers, Andy Plummer and Nick Whittingham also completing the snowy route.
