CRIMEWAVE HITS STOCKSBRIDGE LOCAL BUSINESSES SPEAK OUT
BUSINESS owners in Stocksbridge and Deepcar are being warned of a spate of crime that has hit the area, with around a dozen premises being targeted so far. Just in the last week, The Business Hair Salon, Wheel Monkey, Beachcomber and Brian Kay Transport have all suffered break-ins. At the weekend, Brian Kay Transport, based at Low Lathe Farm in Deepcar, had five trailers loaded with steel stolen from their yard. On the morning of Friday January 12, staff at The Business Hair Salon opened up the shop to find that they had been broken into with cash and brand new hairdressing equipment taken. On Monday morning, Wheel Monkey found that they too had been broken into, posting a video of the now empty storThe Business Hair Salon, above, and Wheel Monkey, right, were victims of crime in age area on Facebook. the last week.
The thieves had broken in through the back security gate with a grinder and taken everything.

New head for school
1'
ECCLESFIELD School have appointed a new headteacher with Gail Stonier taking on the role after Joel Wirth left the school last year.
5
The school has had a tough time of late and in March of last year, it was described as ‘inadequate’ by Ofsted and placed into special measures. However, Ms Stonier has been quick to assure parents that this is a new era for the school. She said in a letter: “As we welcome in the New Year of 2018, I am pleased to introduce myself as your Headteacher at Ecclesfield School. With a new year comes a new era for the school. I am looking forward to swiftly moving the school into a positive position where successful educational outcomes and a supportive environment underpin everything we do.
,.
“The school will face a number of challenges within the coming year as we embark upon a journey of improvement. This will be achieved through setting high standards and expectations within teaching and learning, leadership and management and student outcomes. “You will see changes to the way the school has previously approached these areas and I hope you will give me your full support and understanding towards this new way of working. “In relation to your children, it is imperative that the school environment promotes a culture where acceptance, tolerance and respect are at the core of our values. I will be promoting these values and expecting them to be on show at all times by all students. I want this school to show off the values and virtues that our children have. It will be a welcoming, positive and enjoyable school to be in, felt by all students, staff and visitors from the minute they set foot in the door. “I will be expecting nothing less than outstanding professional standards from all my staff in delivering outstanding support, care and guidance to your children. We will have high expectations at all times and never give up or settle for less from any student. We will unashamedly challenge and push them to meet and exceed their perceived potentials and we will nurture and carefully develop their resilience and ability to cope with ever increasing demands. “We will help prepare them for their adult life ahead and the next step of learning or employment that they will find themselves facing. We want them to leave our school with high aspirations and selfbelief, having choices and opportunities ahead of them that they had not previously thought about. Our curriculum and enrichment activities will give them the skills, qualifications and desire necessary to unlock and successfully follow their future career pathways. “I want to mention academic excellence. I will be constantly striving to improve the results that our students achieve each year and I will be asking leadership at all levels to be responsive to our young people and to provide a stimulating, relevant and inspiring curriculum that allows the students to flourish. “Together, we can move this school to outstanding. Achieving their very best, requires us all to strive for these same expectations every minute of every day, settling for nothing less. This is my commitment and promise to you that I bring as headteacher of Ecclesfield School.

The plan is flexible and can be personalised to suit your lifestyle and weight loss expectations. Independent Cambridge Weight Plan consultant, Debbie Wilson of Deepcar, is on a mission to help fight obesity after losing an amazing seven stones and eight dress sizes on the weight loss programme.Â
Debbie, said: “I didn’t know much about Cambridge Weight Plan before I went to my first consultation and believed it was another shake diet and I have to admit I didn’t really want to go but I knew I needed to do something positive and CWP was the most positive step I have ever made.â€?Â
saw me eat, I was a typical secret eater. Everyone regarded me as the happy, funny person, but inside I was so miserable and so very unhappy and slowly I started to cut myself off from friends and became a master of excuses as to why I couldn’t attend a party or event. I literally hid away for years.â€? Debbie had dieted in the past and at her biggest was nearly 22 stone. “I knew I had to break the cycle and had lost 10 stone many years before, but Cambridge Weight Plan has helped me not only lose the weight, but reeducate myself about food and thankfully I now have the skills and willpower to keep the weight off and now I don’t have to hide away anymore. I love my life.Â
with family members, friends or work colleagues, I also offer group meetings and whilst I see clients in my own home, I also offer a mobile option at your home or place of work, across Sheffield. “I’ve had an amazing 2017 with some fantastic success stories and to top it off I was short listed out of hundreds of applicants to be a top five finalist in Cambridge Weight Plans ‘Slimmer of the Year’ Life Changer award. “It's now my turn to pay it forward but this is a two-way street because by me helping other people lose weight, it also keeps me keep focussed and on track. Cambridge Weight Plan are passionate about weight loss and are working on more than 15 clinical studies across 14 countries and have been fundamental in Medical research such as Diabetes, Osteoarthritis, Psoriasis and Obstructive Sleep Apneoa as well as many others medical conditions.
Debbie admits she had a terrible relationship with food and would over-eat continually.
“I feel so strongly about helping others to lose weight and stay on track that I trained as a weight management consultant and resigned from my full time job to make this my only focus. I love the fact this is one-to-one so people get the support, encouragement and focus they need because we understand everyone is different and everyone’s journey and reasons for wanting to lose weight are very different.Â

Hundreds of musicians will take part in the Valley Music Festival — an all-day event — on Saturday March 24. It is a joint presentation by Bolsterstone Male Voice Choir and Inyerface Arts. Local music groups, including schools, will perform throughout the day at the Venue and at the Fox Valley bandstand culminating
in an evening concert at the Venue with music to suit all tastes and ages. Proceeds from the ground-breaking event, which it is hoped will happen every year, will go towards starting a fund to help young local musicians. People attending the daytime events will be asked for a donation and admission to the evening concert will be by ticket. Community musician, soprano and teacher Hilary Osborn, who leads
Inyerface Arts, said: “We are bowled over by the response from community groups, local schools and solo and ensemble performers. This is a huge event by the community for the community.” Taking part will be eight local choirs, two youth choirs, rock and jazz bands, classical groups and soloists. The Inyerface Arts House Band, led by Joe Shaw, will be available to accompany young pop and rock singers and will also be playing at the evening concert.
Hilary, who lives in Deepcar, added: “There is a huge amount of talent in the valley and this event will celebrate the fact.”

CHRISTMAS LIGHT SHOW RAISES MONEY FOR CHARITY NOW the festivities are behind us, Dave Horne from Thurlstone near Penistone has totted up cash donated from visitors to his house and he was flabbergasted when the total came to £538.58. Dave had a collection bucket for charity as residents of Thurlstone and Penistone marvelled over his Christmas Light display on Westfield Avenue. He told Look Local: “My Pat and I have been putting up lights over Christmas for the past 20 years and the displays are just getting bigger and bigger. “It took us three days to complete the display and I half expected the grid to go down when we switched them on!
“Pat and I are mad as dogs so we thought it would be a great idea to open our garden to the public and put a collection bucket out in aid of West Yorkshire Dog Rescue.” Jane Brennan, manager of the West Yorkshire Dog Rescue in Penistone, commented: “This was a really nice Christmas present for our charity and I would like to thank Dave, Pat, his whole family and all those who visited Dave’s house and chipped in. This cash will go straight to the front line services looking after rescued dogs.” Dave and his family have put all the lights away now ready for Christmas 2018 which is going to be even bigger as he is already adding more lights to their collection.
LIGHTENING THE MOOD: Dave and Pat’s bright house and the money collected.

School work with GP practice to introduce ‘DNA MAN’ character C HA P E L G R E E N Practice has been working closely on a number of projects with local High School, Ecclesfield School, for a couple of years.
The concept began with some initial artwork designed for Chapelgreen Practice by Henry Moody, the son of one of the GP Partners, Dr Nicola Moody.
Recently, a main project has been on educating the current and next generation on the effects of ‘DNAs’ (Did Not Attends) on NHS resources.
The image was later adapted to be less practice specific and more NHS generic, so that it could be the central campaign image and displayed in waiting rooms across the neighbourhood.
The DNA project initially began as a collaborative project between Chapelgreen Practice, Dr Amar Rughani and Jemma Smith, the Patient Participation Group and Ecclesfield School and later this was expanded to include the practices of the Network North Neighbourhood, who provided additional financial support through the Neighbourhood LCS. Together, they have developed a targeted campaign at reducing DNAs in General Practice.
The next stage of the project was for Ecclesfield School to develop a cartoon strip that could be displayed on health information screens or as posters in General Practice waiting rooms. They are now in final production of our campaign materials that will include leaflets, lapel badges, window decals, life size cut outs, and a slide deck. Alongside and in preparation for this campaign, Chapelgreen Practice has also participated in
a regional pilot programme to reduce DNAs in General Practice, this has included multiple small changes over a six month period on how they tackle DNAs in practice.
Follow your dreams at
A number of these suggested changes were developed in partnership with the programme organiser and Kathy Peasegood, deputy manager at Chapelgreen Practice. The first change we made was to introduce a patient promise to the end of each appointment booking – “Will you promise that if you can’t attend this appointment that you will cancel it?” The second change was to amend practice posters to focus on the more positive message and the third change was to introduce a targeted approach to the top 10 offenders. The fourth and final change has been the development of a
YOUR
Although DNAs were not completely eliminated, there has been a significant reduction whilst being part of the regional pilot programme and the practice are confident that the DNA Man campaign will help reduce DNAs further as it begins to educate patients now and in the future.

It’s not too late to make a will... Hello, I’m Jane Bowland, your local consultant of 10 years experience. We are experts in helping people arrange their wills, trusts and lasting powers of attorney. I specialise in helping all kinds of people gain peace of mind by providing professional estate planning services, but with a personal touch. I offer a FREE consultation without obligation for anybody who would like to know more about any of the following:
• Making a basic will • Setting up lasting powers of attorney • Protecting your home from care fees • Pre–paid funeral plans Having a Will in place ensures your assets go to who you choose. It makes the whole process much easier for the people you leave behind and it puts in black and white exactly what you want to happen, avoiding any misunderstanding or arguing. Setting up a Lasting Power of Attorney gives the people that YOU choose the legal right to look after your financial and personal affairs if you become unable to do so. Without one in place, your spouse, partner or family members are NOT automatically able
to take over. Make sure you avoid the distress this can cause you and your loved ones. I know that planning for the future is a very personal matter. Not everyone is able or wants to travel to an appointment in town to sort out their affairs. I can visit you at a convenient time in the comfort and privacy of your own home to discuss your circumstances. My visit and consultation is completely free and you are under no obligation
to do anything. If you decide to make any arrangements you can be safe in the knowledge that all my professional services and work are fully insured and Collective Legal Solutions are members of the Society of Will Writers, so all my clients are assured of being fully protected at all times. All my clients (and their families) that I have helped in the past have been very happy with my services and tell me they have gained great peace of mind knowing that they have sorted everything out.
Jane came to see my parents to help them protect the family home from any future care fees. She really made us all feel at ease, especially my parents. We had no idea what we could do to protect Mum and Dad. Having set up trusts and Lasting Power of Attorney’s, Mum and Dad can get on with their lives without worrying, knowing everything is now in place. Thank you Jane! Mrs Boyle and family, Ecclesfield

Hollin Busk NIMBYs Dear General Public, I would like to share some thoughts from myself and other local residents who feel uncomfortable to speak out in support of the proposed land development at Hollin Busk. Most of the local population will be residing in an abode that has had planning permission granted and more than likely built on a field or land that was once green. If the objectors had a choice would they live at Hollin Busk or on the brown field sites they so favour in the bottom of the valley? I think we know the answer. How many more up and coming local people are we going to lose to Penistone, Cubley and surrounding areas? There is a need for quality family housing. As a local resident I would like my children and grandchildren to have the chance to live and enjoy this environment. The recent Fox Valley development was vehemently opposed by the vast majority however it has generated a wealth of facilities to the area creating many opportunities and I’m sure changed the minds of people who were so against the project initially. In addition to this a link road to the Bypass is now fully operational and has taken a lot of pressure away from the Carr Road junction.

I ask why the SL1 that goes to Unsliven Bridge goes there before the Leisure Centre, something the 57 Comment on letters has never done. I would suggest that Stagecoach get feedback that the proposed new timetable is unacceptable, that they cancel it and that they run the service for the convenience of the customers, not themselves. I would like to ask what purpose the 201 serves and when are we going to get a decent bus service to Barnsley, something we used to have. If there are any errors in this statement please accept my apologies.
Since 2015, the Parish Council has consisted of representatives from Labour, Lib.Dems and UKIP, with the High Green Ward having representatives from both Labour and the Lib Dems, and yet all the criticism is singled out at Labour Councillors.
In order to get better recognition for the area, it would be better if everybody worked together regardless of their political allegiances, that way we might all benefit. At our Labour Party Ward meeting on Wednesday January 10, Cllr Adam Hurst reported that David Ogle also asked a question David Lawson from the public gallery, why certain Section 106 money for High Green had not yet been spent.

Fresh Herbs
“Whilst popular flowers such as Roses and Gypsophelia are a delicate touch, using wild spring flowers, cacti and placing seasonal herbs in pots on tables can create something just as stunning and impactful. 2.
Pastel dress code
“Pastel colours are nothing new when it comes to a summer wedding. But why not try incorporating them in different ways such as pastel linen suits for men, or linen waistcoats for something more traditional? Pastel coloured pashminas for the ladies add a pretty touch for cool evenings by the fire pits. 3.
Keep it cool
“Summer lends itself to having some fun when it comes to cocktails and aperitifs at
your wedding. Freshen up a G&T using Hendricks gin with cucumber and add a sprig of thyme in a balloon glass, filled to the brim with ice. For a quirky take on the classic sophisticated summer cocktail, serve Pimms ice lollies to keep your guests cool. 4.
Summer scents
“Often disregarded, scents can be just as important as decorations when it comes to creating a summer atmosphere. Place lightly scented, floral candles on tables surrounded by flowers to really enhance the summer aroma. 5. Make it a day to remember “Instead of the usual tokens for your guests to take away, try putting party bags together for a much more personal touch. You could include
your favourite book, a mini bottle of your favourite tipple, matches with your wedding date imprinted, or some seedlings or an acorn for your guests to plant and remember your wedding day.”

Niall Smith’s well taken effort gave Legion the lead and their cause was helped further when David Booth was red-carded for a late challenge on Jed Phillips, reducing the home side to ten men after just quarter of an hour. Joe Long didn’t waste any time in taking advantage of the numerical change, racing clear to slot the ball past the advancing keeper for Legion’s second. In the second half, Oughtibridge pushed on but couldn’t breach the visiting defence and the game was sealed when Danny Cardwell’s corner was bulleted home by Joe Wadsworth with an unstoppable header.

Beard pulled a goal back early in the second half with a cross shot that deceived the Hepworth goalkeeper.
The visitors restored the two goal advantage after a mix up in the Villa defence after 65 minutes. Villa pushed forward and Williams scored with a great left foot volley from 15 yards to make the score 2-3 with 15 minutes left. Another mix up in the Villa defence allowed Hepworth to score again and deservedly win the game 4-2. Outstanding for Villa were Williams, Jones and Mossley.

War Memorial Ladies still unbeaten War Memorial Ladies 2 Leicester 1 OUGHTIBRIDGE maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a narrow 2-1 win over East Midlands Premier League leaders Leicester. Leicester opened up much brighter for the first half hour, playing some fluid football through midfield but not finding a finish to beat home keeper Coran Wright, the home team having to dig in and play on the break. The dangerous Leah Rawle, on loan from Spurs, was a constant threat out wide and Natalie Hurst somehow put her header over an empty net on the half hour, albeit from a driven cross. This seemed to be the wake up call Oughtibridge needed as they were much better in the later stages and broke the deadlock when Jenny Selman hooked a clever shot over her shoulder and into the bottom corner despite frantic efforts to clear, this was just the confidence boost they needed going in 1-0 up at break. The War Memorial Ladies took the game to Leicester in the second half as the away team looked less of a threat but it still took a wonder goal in the 68th minute to take the result away from them, full back Katie Denton smashing a 35 yarder into the top corner for a goal of the season contender. Oughtibridge were firmly on top now and Kathryn Mudge’s superb free kick could have brought a third but came off the underside of the bar and out. Lauren Bartle of Leicester scored with another long range effort in injury time to set up a grandstand finish but the War Memorial Ladies held out for another hard fought win. This Sunday, Oughtibridge host Wakefield Ladies in the quarter final of the County Cup, kick off is at 1pm down at the War Memorial.
Pigs leave Leeds empty-handed despite positive display Leeds medics 26 – Stocksbridge 0 AFTER last weeks efforts at Leeds Modernians, Stocksbridge looked enthusiastic in the warm up and well prepared to face a young Leeds Medical side. The Medics were awarded a scrum which allowed them to build a base eventually excelling in speed through the back line and scoring under the posts. The kick was converted bringing a score of 7-0 13 minutes into the game. Stocksbridge’s heads didn’t drop as they kicked back off and followed the ball down the long pitch. Big tackles from Kazmierski and Smith kept the pressure on the Medical team. The Medics made some good speedy runs but Stocksbridge defended well midfield. A penalty was awarded to the Medics within their attacking 22 which
resulted in another two consecutive penalties where Stocksbridge kept them out until a penalty was awarded in the opposite direction allowing a kick to take the pressure of Stocksbridge. Play came back within the 22 and pressure remained on the visiting team for another good 10 minutes. Stocksbridge had their own spell of pressure and as half time approached, they were camped out in the opposition half but couldn’t score. Returning Brown made a big carry securing the ball and recycling for other forwards Newton and Aspin to do the same. The Medics gained possession through a scrum and attacked again until a chip overhead from within the 22 went straight out meaning a Stocksbridge line out. Stocksbridge caught the ball
and set up a maul then passed the ball out to allow the backs to stretch their legs outfield. After 10 minutes of playing in their half the pigs just couldn’t make it over the try line. The Medics then gained possession and took advantage of an overlap out wide which allowed them to score and convert at 66 minutes into the game giving a score of 14-0. Stocksbridge put pressure on again at kick off and continued to do what they had been doing from the beginning of the game in search of putting points on the board. The Medics worked the ball wide to one wing and then back to the other where there was another overlap. Jones made the tackle on the ball carrier who offloaded to a supporting player who then scored under the sticks. A men-
tion for Kelly who chased down to the very end. The kick was converted making the score 21-0 with five minutes left to play. Straight after kick off the Medics, who were on the search for the bonus try, were awarded a penalty in their 22. A sleeping Stocksbridge were expecting a kick to touch but the Medics took a quick tap and go then went through the defence scoring out wide. The kick was not inverted making the final score 26-0 at 78 minutes. Although the score tells one half of the story the other is much different. Stocksbridge attacked well with good lines of running and speed but just couldn’t break the young, well drilled technical side. There’s some work to be done in the defence aspect of the game
Footpath Runners excel in Barnsley AC Winter Track Series THE first race in the Barnsley AC Winter Track series took place at the Dorothy Hyman Stadium at Cudworth last week. Damian Kilpin was first V40 18:01. Martin Ball was second V45 in 18:08. Simon Pike was first V35.
As it was the first race over this distance in the whole of the UK this year, each category winner is also currently top of the National rankings. Lesley Parker was the first PFR woman back in 20:14. Dan Limb ran a massive personal best of over 25 minutes at the Brass Monkey Half Marathon at York, finishing in a time of 91:52.
The Trigger fell race, which runs from Marsden to Edale over a course of approximately 20 miles, took place on Sunday. Four PFR runners completed the course. First back was Phil Hinchliffe in 53rd place in a time of 4:43.23. John Tomlinson was 103rd, Brent Lindsay 129th and Nick Whittingham 155th.
but nothing that can’t be ironed out at training this week. Head coach Rhys Keenan said: “The lads went well for 60 minutes with the score at 7-0 to the Medics, we just need to be a bit smarter when games are so tight like this. Training is going well and the lads have bought into the new style of play which looks to be improving each week. If the lads carry on training hard and playing like they have over the last few weeks a big win could be on the cards very soon.” Stocksbridge travel to Skipton for their third away game of the year in as many weeks. Get on the road and give them your support! For any new, returning or interested players; training is Tuesdays and Fridays 6.30pm at Coal Pit Lane pitches. Everyone is welcome regardless of ability.

Greaves impresses as Steels are denied Stocksbridge Park Steels 1-1 Cleethorpes Town A GENEROUS last minute free kick led to Cleethorpes Town equalising and denying Stocksbridge Park Steels a victory over one of their play-offs rivals.
By James Grayson www.nonleagueyorkshire.com

Although they had to weather a lot of pressure in the second half, they had stood firm and looked set to hold on until Liam Dickens scored. That cancelled out a magnificent first half goal from key man Joe Lumsden – a quality goal that inspired his mentor Ryan Laight, the Steels assistant manager, to gallop down the touchline punching the air. Stocksbridge’s first half display was excellent. Lumsden’s goal came off the back of an error from rattled Cleethorpes goalkeeper Walton Richards who had to smash the ball out of play after briefly losing control of it. Brodie Litchfield reacted quickly and his throw-in caught Cleethorpes cold and sent Lumsden away down the left. Stocksbridge’s perennial hero cut inside into the penalty area and sent a tremendous effort past Richards into the far corner.

More pressure followed. Litchfield was a constant threat and Scott Ruthven went close with a good effort. The Steels could not maintain the same tempo in the second half, but they looked very dangerous on the counterattack. Cleethorpes were exposed several times and had the final pass been better, the visitors would have been finished off. Goalkeeper Greaves, in the side because David Reay was suspended, was a busy man, but he dealt with almost everything thrown at him. He attacked and claimed crosses, made several good saves – most notably when he put his body on the line to deny Cleethorpes number ten Daniel North. Ultimately the referee Brad Hall played a starring role at the death. His decision to award Cleethorpes a free kick on the attacking right was debatable to say the least. The free kick was swept in and a header came back off the post, trickled across the goalline before Dickens blasted it over.
