Local war hero celebrates 100th birthday with party A LOCAL war hero celebrated his 100th birthday this week with both his family and the Royal Naval Association, of which he is the president. Tommy Dickinson reached the milestone age on January 28 and the association organised a surprise birthday party for him last Wednesday, with Stocksbridge Mayor Keith Davis making a visit. He received the card from the Queen and then had a meal with 48 family members at the Dog and Partridge, Bord Hill, Flouch. In August 2015, Mr Dickinson featured in Look Local after receiving his Russian Convoy Medal aged 97. He was given this medal for his courage and bravery some 70 years after his service in the Arctic Convoys during World War Two.
The war veteran served as a Lieutenant in the Royal Navy from 1936 to 1978 and during his latter years he was the careers officer. Although he is retired from the Royal Navy, Tom worked daily as secretary at the Legionnaires Club in Stocksbridge from 1983 - 2017. During the convoys, around 1,400 merchant ships delivered essential supplies to the Soviet Union under the LendLease program, escorted by ships of the allied navy. Eighty-five merchant vessels and 16 Royal Navy warships were lost. The convoys demonstrated the Allies commitment to helping the Soviet Union, prior to the opening of a Second Front, and tied up a substantial part of Germany’s Navy and Air Force.

AT around 11pm on Wednesday January 24, St Mary’s Church Hall in High Green was broken into by the person in the CCTV picture. On entering the hall they proceeded directly to the store room, broke the lock on this door, and moved into the small storeroom. Next they broke into the inner door and picked up the small heavy safe. This storeroom belongs to the charity Stomp Clubs for kids and the safe held fees received for the staff wages.

The charity serves the community by running breakfast and afterschool clubs for children attending the local schools. They also hold holiday clubs during the school holidays. As a charity, they make no profit and spend all extra money on the children. If you know the person in the picture please contact Ecclesfield police station quoting the crime number ref no 1420674-18 and any information will be kept confidential. Before Christmas the CCTV company was called in to investigate why the CCTV cameras were not working. On investigating it was found the thieves had climbed onto not only St Mary’s Church Hall roof but also St Mary’s Club roof too, stripping the remaining lead off.

Thorncliffe conservation volunteers learn new skills THIS winter, the Thorncliffe Conservation Group were taught the skill of hedge layering. In 2009 they planted whips alongside a fence they constructed by the Trans Pennine Trail as it continues after Bridge Inn Road. The whips were of native trees including hazel, hawthorn, blackthorn, holly and dog rose. This year they had grown to ten foot saplings, tall enough to be

With advice and training from the Sheffield Countryside Partnership, formally known as the Sheffield Landscape Trust, four cold winter mornings were used to master this new skill.

Four jailed for organised crime in Hillsborough
The weapons and drugs that were discovered by police and below, the guilty who now face lengthy terms in prison for their crimes.
TWO women and two men have been sentenced to a total of 53-and-a-half years in prison after admitting their involvement in a number of firearms, drug trafficking and money laundering offences. This follows a police operation resulting in the recovery of one Skorpion sub machine pistol, six Makarov semiautomatic pistols, one loaded Tokarev semi-automatic pistol, 1,458 rounds of ammunition, seven sound moderators (silencers) and 19 magazines. The operation also seized one-and-ahalf kilograms of cocaine, 107 wraps of heroin, two kilograms of benzocaine and 17.5 kilograms of boric acid, which are used as adulterants when preparing wholesale quantities of Class A drugs. In addition, £42,000 cash was also recovered. At Sheffield Crown Court on Thursday January 25, 50-year-old Violeta Daneva and her 31-year-old daughter Veselina Daneva appeared alongside 44-year-old Sacha Brookes and 46-year-old Jason Shelton Gregory to be sentenced. Sacha Brookes, of Park View Road, Sheffield, pleaded guilty prior to trial to 10 offences of possessing prohibited firearms, ammunition, conspiring to
supply Class A drugs, conspiring to sell or transfer prohibited weapons and possessing criminal property in the form of cash. He also pleaded guilty to two further offences of conspiring to supply a prohibited firearm and possessing ammunition following the recovery of an additional Skorpion sub machine pistol and ammunition in Leicester. He was sentenced to 27 years in prison. Brookes’ wife Veselina, of Park View Road, Sheffield, pleaded guilty on the first day of trial in September 2017 to ten offences of possessing prohibited firearms, ammunition, conspiring to supply Class A drugs, conspiring to sell or transfer prohibited weapons and possessing criminal property. She was sent to prison for 15-and-a-half years. Gregory, of Kyle Crescent, Sheffield, also pleaded guilty on the first day of trial in September 2017 to four offences of possessing prohibited firearms, ammunition and conspiring to sell or transfer prohibited weapons. He was sentenced to 11 years in prison. Veselina’s mother Violeta Daneva, of Park View Road, Sheffield, pleaded guilty on the first day of trial in September 2017 to assisting an offender, namely her daughter Veselina, by helping her

seven sound moderators, 18 magazines and 1402 rounds of ammunition. As a result, Gregory was arrested at his home address.
machine gun and ammunition were transferred to members of an organised crime group (OCG) from Leicestershire.
The court heard that in November 2016, Brookes was stopped by officers in Bickerton Road, Hillsborough, and arrested for driving whilst disqualified.
“Almost simultaneously, Veselina and Violeta were seen removing more items from their vehicle into a holdall and walking into Hillsborough Park, where they were arrested. The bag was found to contain a loaded Tokarev semi-automatic pistol, three magazines, 56 rounds of ammunition, Class A drugs, Benzocaine, weighing scales and £12,950 cash.
The person supplying the firearm and ammunition was a member of a separate organised crime group based in Huddersfield. Two people from Leicester were seen in the area before driving back to Leicester.
What followed was an organised attempt at disposing of incriminating evidence, as Detective Inspector Graham Bulmer explains: “After his arrest, officers observed Brookes’ wife Veselina and mother-in-law Violeta approach Brookes in the police vehicle before recovering a heavy suitcase and bin bag from a store room within the Regent Court flat complex on Bradfield Road. The items were placed in the boot of Veselina’s car and driven a short distance. She then contacted Gregory, who drove to join them and transferred the items into his vehicle before driving towards his home address “Gregory was observed by officers driving to an industrial estate off Halifax Road, where the case was discarded and he returned home.
“Our proactive operation has resulted in an unbelievable quantity of firearms, ammunition and Class A drugs being recovered and prevented the onward distribution to criminals. This is a significant result and I hope the public are reassured by our efforts to tackle organised crime in the county.”
“Our officers seized the case, which was found to contain six Makarov handguns, a Skorpion sub machine pistol,

On 29 March 2016, the police stopped and searched a Hyundai motor vehicle in the Rusheymead area of Leicester. On the front passenger seat was the Skorpion machine gun and 25 rounds of ammunition that had been transferred on 25 March. Brookes was subsequently charged with conspiring to supply a prohibited firearm and possessing ammunition, before pleading guilty at court. Improvement work on Valley Medical Centre to start next month WORK to extend and improve Valley Medical Centre in Stocksbridge is due to get underway next month. Sheffield construction company Henry Boot has been awarded the contract to complete the work which will transform the exterior of the building and create a better environment for patients and staff. The work is expected to take around six months to complete and will be carried out in phases so the centre can stay open and continue to serve the community throughout the £680,000 project. The existing building will undergo an external facelift to improve the look of the centre and a new extension will create an attractive entrance area and lobby as well as more space for Stocksbridge Dental Practice, which
will be rebranded as mydentist Stocksbridge. The dental practice will benefit from a larger waiting area as well as new decoration and signage throughout. Three new treatment and consulting rooms are being created for the medical centre and a temporary entrance will be created for patients while the improvements are being made to the existing entrance area. The building is owned by Dransfield Properties, the developers and owners of Fox Valley in Stocksbridge. The company’s development surveyor, Dave Hale, said: “We are delighted to be starting work on a project which is going to make a huge different to the external appearance as well as the internal space and layout of the Valley Medical Centre and im-
prove and upgrade the environment for patients and staff. “We are working closely with our contractors Henry Boot and the team at Valley Medical and mydentist Stocksbridge to ensure that the centre can continue to operate with as little disruption as possible throughout.” Valley Medical Centre caters for 9,700 patients. Elizabeth Sedgwick, Practice Manager said: “These changes are going to be hugely beneficial for the Medical Centre, creating more space for both our clinicians and growing number of patients.” The work will get underway during the second week in February and is expected to be completed at the end of September. Penistone Poppy Appeal up £1,000 on 2016
S106 funding helps new businesses in Penistone PENISTONE is set to benefit from £182,982.65 to deliver phase three of the Penistone Managed Workspace Project thanks to Section 106 money secured by Barnsley Council from a local developer. Phase three of the existing project will build on the success of phases one and two. These schemes saw 15 new businesses move into the workspace, creating 42 jobs and receiving over £300,000 of private sector investment. Since the first two phases completed, occupancy has remained full with demand far exceeding availability. As part of phase three S106 monies will be used to create nine new managed workspaces. Ranging in size between 1,000 sq ft and 6,000 sq ft the units will be open to new and existing businesses within the Penistone area. The funding will be matched with £322,665 of private sector investment and a further £40,000 of match funding from the East Peak Innovation Partnership (EPIP).
THE Penistone Branch of the Royal British Legion are celebrating an extremely successful Poppy Appeal. All the cash has been counted and the total comes to an incredible £18,129.52p, a thousand pounds more than the 2016 appeal. Brian Haigh, the Poppy Appeal organiser, announced: “On behalf of the branch, I would like to say a big thank you to all the local businesses including all the pubs, shops and schools who sold thousands of Poppies.
“We had volunteers on street corners and in Tesco selling poppies, wristbands and pins, these volunteers have done a sterling job and we couldn’t have raised this amazing amount without them.” Derek Whitworth, Chairman of the Penistone Branch of the RBL, remarked: “At the end of the poppy appeal season I always think that there is no way that we can improve upon the previous year’s appeal, but here we are with £1,000 more than 2016! This is all down to the generosity of our community.”
Mirror Image
The Poppy Appeal has never been so important and all this money will go straight to London to be re-distributed and make life changing differences for veterans and their families all around the UK including here in our community. If any veteran or family member could do with a helping hand then please do not hesitate to contact the RBL on 0808 802 8080 or Penistone Branch on www.penistonerbl.co.uk/welfare. More information can also be found on Penistone Royal British Legion Facebook page.
Family Run Business With A Personal And Friendly Service
Cllr Roy Miller, Cabinet Spokesperson for Place, said: “The funding is fantastic for Penistone and will go towards creating more and better jobs within the local area. Once completed we hope the new workspace will provide between 18 to 30 new jobs, supporting new and existing businesses to expand and grow.” Section 106 funding is money that developers of larger sites pay to the council to reduce the impact of the development. Developers sign an S106 agreement as part of their planning permission. This is a legal document that specifies what the money is spent on and where. The money can be spent on projects such as improving community facilities, education and providing affordable housing. Council officers liaise with Area Councils, Community Groups and public representatives to identify suitable projects. An S106 panel then meets every quarter to review each proposed scheme. For a project to be approved, it must have available S106 money and contribute to the council priorities.

The event was a casino night called Grenoside Millionaires Night. Rotarians dress in black tie suits for a night at the casino. On the night, Napoleons of Hillsborough very kindly supplied the evening with a full size roulette wheel and croupier as well as other gambling equipment. There was a bar and pie and peas. Raffles and auctions took place and as a result, two defibrillators have been fitted - one at Grenoside Community Centre and one at Ecclesfield Council office.

GLOBE HOLIDA GLOBE Holidays are always looking for ways to bring the very best value trips and holidays to their customers with an emphasis on local accessibility and affordability, without compromise.
This has been reflected by their new programme which for this year includes additional local pick-up points within the North Sheffield area at incredible prices. For many, getting into Barnsley Interchange is difficult for an early departure time, which has for too long now excluded most from the North Sheffield area from being able to enjoy day trips, it can be expensive and always a worry as to how you are to get home after the trip returns too, this has meant that you may have not been able to take advantage of the fantastic prices that Globe offer, such as day trips from just £9.99; Globe however have come up with an innovative solution to this problem; offering a comprehensive day trip programme from your local area.

It’s not too late to make a will... Hello, I’m Jane Bowland, your local consultant of 10 years experience. We are experts in helping people arrange their wills, trusts and lasting powers of attorney. I specialise in helping all kinds of people gain peace of mind by providing professional estate planning services, but with a personal touch. I oer a FREE consultation without obligation for anybody who would like to know more about any of the following:
• Making a basic will • Setting up lasting powers of attorney • Protecting your home from care fees • Pre–paid funeral plans Having a Will in place ensures your assets go to who you choose. It makes the whole process much easier for the people you leave behind and it puts in black and white exactly what you want to happen, avoiding any misunderstanding or arguing. Setting up a Lasting Power of Attorney gives the people that YOU choose the legal right to look after your ďŹ nancial and personal aairs if you become unable to do so. Without one in place, your spouse, partner or family members are NOT automatically able
to take over. Make sure you avoid the distress this can cause you and your loved ones. I know that planning for the future is a very personal matter. Not everyone is able or wants to travel to an appointment in town to sort out their aairs. I can visit you at a convenient time in the comfort and privacy of your own home to discuss your circumstances. My visit and consultation is completely free and you are under no obligation
to do anything. If you decide to make any arrangements you can be safe in the knowledge that all my professional services and work are fully insured and Collective Legal Solutions are members of the Society of Will Writers, so all my clients are assured of being fully protected at all times. All my clients (and their families) that I have helped in the past have been very happy with my services and tell me they have gained great peace of mind knowing that they have sorted everything out.
Jane came to see my parents to help them protect the family home from any future care fees. She really made us all feel at ease, especially my parents. We had no idea what we could do to protect Mum and Dad. Having set up trusts and Lasting Power of Attorney’s, Mum and Dad can get on with their lives without worrying, knowing everything is now in place. Thank you Jane! Mrs Boyle and family, EcclesďŹ eld

Dear Sir, I do understand why the new Councillor for High Green is arguing for equality of funding between the six wards in Ecclesfield Parish Council. It sounds straightforward and fair and should certainly be pursued rather than inequality. I remember a few years ago, however, that former Parish Councillor Brian Edley argued a similar case to allocate an equal amount of grant money to each ward. We discussed the matter but pointed out that the needs of each ward were often quite different and could vary from year to year. It’s a little like allocating money or food or attention to your children if you have more than one. Children have different ages, needs and talents. If one child needs extra funding to help them in their future career, you do your best to help them (I speak from personal experience). The following year it may be the same child who needs even more support (again I speak from personal experience!) or it could be another child with different needs. They are not being treated strictly equally but fairly according to their individual situation.
Got something to say?

May I respond to the letter regarding the proposed development on Hunshelf Park (Bramble Row) in I’ve read with interest the letters from various Look Local on 25 January. local councillors and residents regarding funding Mr Tylee urges readers to support this application. for High Green and frankly have had enough. St. Valentine’s Day began as a celebration of one or more early Christian saints named Valentinus. Several martyrdom stories were invented for the various Valentines that belonged to February 14, and added to later martyrologies. A popular account of Saint Valentine of Rome states that he was imprisoned for performing weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry and for ministering to Christians, who were persecuted under the Roman Empire. According to legend, during his imprisonment, he healed the daughter of his jailer, Asterius. An embellishment to this story states that before his execution he wrote her a letter signed “Your Valentine” as a farewell. Saint Valentine’s Day is an official feast day in the Anglican Communion, as well as in the Lutheran Church. The day was first associated with romantic love in the

circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished. In 18th-century England, it evolved into an occasion in which lovers expressed their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery, and sending greeting cards (known as “valentines”). In Europe, Saint Valentine’s Keys are given to lovers “as a romantic symbol and an invitation to unlock the giver’s heart”, as well as to children, in order to ward off epilepsy (called Saint Valentine’s Malady). Valentine’s Day symbols that are used today include the heart-shaped outline, doves, and the figure of the winged Cupid. Since the 19th century, handwritten valentines have given way to mass-produced greeting cards. No matter what you choose to do this Valentine’s Day, be sure to let the one you love know how much they mean to you in your own special way!

LOVE is in the air at Fox Valley as the team are set to hold a special selfie competition to celebrate Valentines and all things romantic! The Fox Valley Ambassadors will be out on the centre at the February Farmer’s market, on Saturday 3rd February as well as on Saturday 10th February with a specially-made heart shaped selfie frame for couples to have their photos taken with.
There are some fantastic prizes up for grabs from the Fox Valley retailers including a photo frame from Paperchase, a £25 voucher and bottle of prosecco from Pontis and gifts for him and for her from Sandersons Department Store. Couples can enter the competition across social media themselves or with the help of the Fox Valley Ambassadors by uploading their selfie to Face-
book, Instagram or Twitter along with the hash tag #withlovefromFoxValley. Fox Valley Centre Manager Annabel Plumtree said “We are looking forward to spreading the love here at Fox Valley over the next couple of weekends and we can’t wait to see all of the lovely pictures.”
“There are some brilliant prizes up for grabs from our fantastic retailers that make for the perfect treat this Valentines.” The winner of the #withlovefromFoxValley selfie competition will be announced on our Facebook page @FoxValleyRetail on Wednesday 14th February.

World champion to appear as Stead makes his bow WORLD Champion Jason Doyle will make a rare appearance at Sheffield for Simon Stead’s farewell meeting on March 25.
Tigers legend Simon Stead has confirmed he will officially bring the curtain down on a glittering career and Doyle has confirmed he’ll be there. Stead, the current Tigers team manager, won every major honour available during his two spells with Tigers – starting with the Premier League title way back in 1999. Now, 18-years later, the curtain will fall on his time as a rider which has included World Cup appearances for Great Britain, individual glory and a top flight title with Swindon. The ‘Last Lap’ is sure to pull in a bumper crowd and will be raced as an individual format – he’s already working on star names to play their part. He said: “For one last time, I do want to do my final laps around Sheffield - even if I can’t promise how quick they’ll be! “I couldn’t have had my Farewell at anywhere else but Owlerton. It’s the place I call home, I’ve spent so many years of my career there and I want to give something back to the fans who’ve supported me through thick and thin for a long, long time. “I want to give the Sheffield public one of the big- Meanwhile Sheffield’s first home team action of the gest, most spectacular meetings they’ve ever had at new season will be on Thursday April 5 when they Owlerton - and we’ve had a few in the past trust face Newcastle. me! Success for Scott SCOTT Hinchcliffe of Penistone Footpath won the hilly Meltham 10k road race at the weekend in a time of 35:16. The men’s team won the first prize, with Gareth Cooke and Andrew Heppenstall making up this trio.

In all 18 PFR runners took part. The women’s team took first prize also, led home by Laura Gill who finished second female overall in a time of 44:08. The other two successful team mates were Julia Johnson, who was second F55 and Julie Darigala. Shaun Dimelow finished first V45 and Andrew Heppenstall first V35. At the Tigger Tor fell race run over 9.6 miles with 1,700 ft of ascent, first back for the club was Ian Charlesworth followed by Lee Bridgewater and Steve Sanders. Ian was 71st out of 324 runners.
“It’s also great for the Sheffield fans because they don’t get to see World Champions around Owlerton very often and I’m sure Doyley will put on a great show.
“I was personally delighted to see Jason win the title because I think he deserved it the year before when he got injured and that robbed him of the title.
“He’s looking forward to riding on the big, fast track and it should be a memorable occasion for all the fans which is what I want it to be.
“It’s also good news that he’s signed for Somerset and he’s staying in British Speedway. This is going to be a great way for us to start the season at Sheffield and I’ll have more rider news in the near future.”

Joe Lumsden (pictured) had given Steels the lead early in the first half before Jordan Francis scored the visitors goal on 54 minutes. But Litchfield struck a spectacular effort on 90 minutes to secure all three points.
of their back-to-back games. Josh Walker, Charles Tunnard and Tom Galloway were also on target. Oughtibridge War Memorial Ladies eased through to the semi finals of the Sheffield and Hallamshire Women’s County Cup with a convincing 6-0 home win over Wakefield Ladies.
Park Steels now have a run of three games away from home starting with Carlton Town on Saturday February 3 at 3pm.
After some early resistance Oughtibridge broke the deadlock on 18 minutes, Kathryn Mudge racing onto through ball to slot home for 1-0. Lauren Turner and Annie Longmore made it 3-0 by the break.
They then visit Spalding United and Market Drayton before hosting Corby Town on Saturday February 24 at Look Local Stadium with a 3pm kick off.
The second half was one way traffic as Wakefield hung on to try and stem the tide but it was in vain as further goals from Turner, Laura Watton and Becky Shaw sealed their fate.
It was a mixed week for Penistone Church after they beat Parkgate 4-2 to bounce back from their Toolstation NCEL League Cup round three defeat to Hemsworth Miners Welfare.
This Sunday they are back in league action down at the War Memorial, hosting Eastwood Town Ladies at 2pm.
Ryan Johnson scored their only goal of the game as they were knocked out of the Cup but Andy Ring scored twice as they took a well-deserved win against Parkgate with Nathan Keightley and Kieran Ryan also on target. A number of players from both Stocksbridge Park Steels and Penistone Church were involved in Yorkshire IFA’s first ever game against Ellan Vannin. The team represent Yorkshire and drew a bumper crowd of over 600 for their first game against the side from the Isle of Man. Jordan Coduri and Nathan Keightley of Penistone Church were called up along with Josh Hobson, Ben Rhodes and Kurtis Turner of Park Steels. Coduri scored the team’s first ever goal as they drew 1-1. Cal Chambers scored an incredible five goals as Oughtibridge War Memorial beat Civil B 8-0 in the first
Although High Green Villa returned to winning ways, they were below par in a 3-2 defeat of Silkstone, failing to take chances early in the game. Villa took the lead after 25 minutes when Jones stabbed the ball home from close range after a goal mouth scramble. Leading goal scorer Jacobs scored the second for Villa making the score 2-0 at half time. After 60 minutes Silkstone reduced the score to 2-1 with a well taken goal. Varne restored the two goal lead for Villa mid-way through the second half only for Silkstone to score a second, making it a nervy finish for The Villa. Performances will have to improve for the remainder of the season to make promotion to The Premier a reality. Next Saturday Villa face Caribbean Sports FC at home with a 2pm kick off.
