Twenty-five years behind bars for Sheffield cousins Two members of the same family are beginning lengthy sentences behind bars for shooting a 23-year-old man in woodland in the Chapeltown area of Sheffield. Ricky Mayfield, 30, and Francis Mayfield, 25, appeared at Sheffield Crown Court on trial for attempted murder and possession of a firearm after the incident in April last year. They were both found guilty of section 18 wounding with intent and possession of a firearm after a nineday trial that began on Wednesday, 17 January. They were both found not guilty of attempted murder.

Appearing at court again yesterday, (Tuesday, 30 January) Ricky, of Norfolk Park Bail Hostel, was sentenced to 15-years in prison for the wounding, with an additional five-years on licence, and fiveyears for possession of a firearm to be served concurrently. Also appearing yesterday, Francis, of Toppham Road, was sentenced to ten-years in prison for the wounding and five-years for possession of a firearm, also to be served concurrently. DC Rob Sommerville, leading the investigation from Zeus, the Force’s dedicated team in tackling and investigating gun

crime, said: “On Sunday, 23 April, a 23-year-old man was riding a quad bike in woodland close to Smithywood in Chapeltown, when he was approached by the Mayfields, who were also on a quad bike, and fired shots directly at him.

“The victim suffered serious injuries to his hand as a result of the attack. An investigation immediately c o m m e n c e d and we arrested both Mayfields in connection to the incident, charging them shortly after with their crimes. “I am pleased with the sentences they have received, this was a completely mindless act of

violence that had every potential to have been fatal and could have resulted in the loss of a loved one for family and friends. “Neither of the Mayfields have

shown any remorse for their actions, they believed they were above the law, choosing to possess an illegal weapon and thinking they could use it to threaten and injure

an individual and not be held responsible for their crimes. “I hope this sends out a very clear message that we are committed and we will always

investigate any form of criminality. With the help from our communities we can achieve justice and results such as this, as our priority is to ensure our residents are protected and

kept safe and those who choose to be involved in crime are held to account.”

Sam Pickering Amazing man The family of a young motorcycle rider killed while riding to a charity event to help seriously ill children - have paid tribute to an ‘amazing man who was full of life’. Sam Pickering was one of hundreds of bikers riding to Sheffield Children’s Hospital to deliver Easter eggs to help brighten the days of young patients. But the 20-yearold, of Deepcar, never made it to the event after losing control of his Yamaha motorbike on Langsett Road North in Oughtibridge. His family told how Sam had taken part in the annual Egg Run, organised by the Three Shires

Honda Owners Club, almost every year since he was a young boy, helping to raise more than £40, 000 for the hospital. During an inquest into his death, step-father Ian Santhouse said: “Sam was a good rider and loved it. “He was an amazing man and he was so full of life.” After the hearing, mum Lorna added: “He loved riding his motorbike and the charity was close to his heart. “He first took part in it with me as a pillion passenger when he was a kid. “He was beautiful and was so funny.” The inquest, held at Sheffield Coroner’s Court earlier this week,

heard how Sam and Mr Santhouse were on the way to the hospital on Easter Sunday last year when the fatal collision h a p p e n e d . Mr Santhouse was about 200 yards behind Sam when he disappeared around a corner. When he caught up with him, he saw the young rider had come off his bike. Two off duty nurses arrived at the scene and CPR was performed but he was pronounced dead a short while later. Pc Mick Street, crash scene investigator, said marks on the road showed one of the foot pegs from the motorbike

was down which could have caused ‘instability’ prior to him crashing into a raised kerb and safety barrier. He added there were no other vehicles involved. A post mortem examination showed Sam died from multiple injuries. Coroner Steven Eccleston concluded that he died as a result of a road traffic collision. On the day of his death a minute’s silence followed by 30 seconds of revving was held outside the hospital when other riders became aware of the crash. Hundreds of riders also turned out for his funeral.

Caborn Calls for ‘graft and hard work’

Caborn Calls for Sheffield City Region to build a “New Economy,” replacing “broken economic model”. Responding to the Sheffield Chamber of Commerce Mayoral Manifesto, Richard Caborn has promised to deliver a radical

rethink of the local economy, if elected Mayor. In a letter to Richard Wright, Executive Director of the Chamber of Commerce, Caborn has promised to pioneer a “New Economy” across the city region, to replace

the “tired and broken economic model” being pursued by the Tories and London elite. He describes this new economy, which will be built upon local values of “fairness and cooperation, graft and hard-work”; rejecting irresponsible shortterm profiteering.

The new economy will be the chief focus of a new politics replacing the “tired and broken politics of Westminster” which will see new powers and funding delivered across the city region for the first time in decades.

ARTIFICIAL gRASS

Caborn’s new economic approach will reward firms who invest for the long term, work in partnership with local institutions and provide secure employment, fair pay and workplace training. The mayoral hopeful also wants to see more

done to attract young women to roles in science, tech and engineering. In his letter to the Chamber of Commerce, Caborn referenced Forgemasters and Rolls Royce as fine examples of local firms, who invest in sustainable technologies and collaborate well with local universities and councils, recruiting apprentices and paying a decent wage. The Advanced Manufacturing Park and Olympic Legacy Park were also hailed as flagship examples of the new economy in action, thanks to their strong partnership with local universities, hospitals, councils and sporting institutions. If elected Mayor, Caborn says that “tired and broken economic models” based on greedy short-term gains, low wages and zero hour contracts would “not be welcome” in the city region. Richard Caborn is

currently seeking to be selected as the Labour Party candidate for Sheffield City Region Mayor. Launching his campaign a fortnight ago, Caborn promised to deliver a new economy for the region. He has also pledged to build a 20-mile world-class Innovation Corridor stretching from the Olympic Legacy Park and Advanced Manufacturing Innovation District right up to Doncaster Sheffield Airport, creating more opportunities for investment, jobs and skills. Standing to be Labour’s Candidate for Mayor of Sheffield City Region, Richard Caborn said: “A strong economy is vital for the success of our city region. But this should not be at any cost. As Mayor, I will not tolerate a race to the bottom. That’s why I want to build a new economy for the region, based on fairness and co-operation and rewarding good graft and hard work.

“This new economy would promote collaboration with local communities, invest for the long term in training and skills, providing a fair day’s pay and decent workplace rights. Many of our businesses already do this, and they should be welcomed. “Unfortunately, too many businesses are in it for the wrong reasons; fixated on making a fastbuck through low wages and zero hour contracts. This tired and broken economic model is symptomatic of the tired and broken political model of Westminster. “This irresponsible short term behaviour will no longer be welcome in our city region. It breeds selfishness and inequality and it is not just bad for the economy, but bad for our society as a whole. From May 3rd we have the chance to do something different and build a new economy for the many, not the few.”

Ecclesfield Parish Council and The Rotary Club of Wortley have joined forces by each committing five thousand pounds to install at least 6 defibrillators in the Ecclesfield Parish area. The first two – at the Parish Office and the Grenoside C o m m u n i t y Association – are already up and running. Others will follow in Burncross, Chapeltown, Ecclesfield and High

Green. Pictured with the first defibrillator are Councillor Garry Weatherall who is taking the lead on this project for the Parish Council along with Trevor Fletcher, President, and Anne Willey, Secretary, of the Rotary Club of Wortley. Garry said “I cannot think of a better way of the Parish Council supporting its local community than by providing this vital life-saving

equipment which is available at all times of day and night. I have already written to over a hundred local businesses and I hope they can see that we are determined to succeed and are now encouraged to support this worthwhile scheme”. Trevor said “The Rotary Club of Wortley is delighted join with the Parish Council to support this very worthwhile scheme. All our money is raised

locally and it is therefore fitting that we support local initiatives such as this”. The defibrillators will be linked to the Yorkshire Ambulance network of life saving equipment and can be called on in an emergency to assist those suffering from a seizure. Time and time again they have been shown to save lives.

Store WHEN MAN WITH manager A PRAM MET THE short PRINCE OF WALES listed for company award The store manager at Fox Valley’s branch of Holland and Barrett Suzanne Dickinson has been nominated for the company’s National “Hall of Fame Awards.” Suzanne, who leads a team of four at the busy store, will find out on February 7th if she is one of the winners of the Regional Finals which are

held in Harrogate. Holland and Barrett has more than 1,300 stores across the world with more than half of them in the UK. The Fox Valley store opened in July 2016 – a month after the award winning shopping centre was officially opened by Joanna Lumley OBE. Since then the business

has gone from strength to strength and continues to grow at the busy shopping centre. Suzanne said: “I am so touched to have been nominated for this award, its really exciting for the whole team who work so hard to make sure we reach our targets and deliver great customers service every day in the store.”

Fox Valley’s centre manager Annabel Plumtree added: “We are delighted for Suzanne and her team that she has been put forward for the Hall of Fame Award – it’s a great reflection on the positive feedback the store receives here at Fox Valley. We wish her all the very best in the awards next month.”

Last week Sheffield’s Pram Man John Burkill was invited to Buckingham Palace for a reception celebrating the volunteers at Macmillan Cancer Support, hosted by the charity’s patron HRH Prince Charles. John was one of 180 guests from across the country to attend the reception and, as promised, wore that green wig throughout! He’s been donning his green curly wig and walking around Sheffield with his pram for decades, to raise money for charity. He was the only volunteer to attend from South Yorkshire and has so far raised over

£350,000 for Macmillian. “The local fundraising team nominated John because we think he is an absolute

legend. He has raised so much for us, he is a fantastic ambassador for Macmillan and of

course, he also won the Douglas Macmillan Award in 2013, our most prestigious volunteering award.”

MARIE CURIE APPEAL MARIE Curie is appealing for people in the local community to volunteer as part of a brand new volunteer fundraising group based in the local area. The group will support the work of Marie Curie in the areas covered by the S35 postcode. Members would

attend meetings every few weeks and be part of the group’s organising of fundraising activities, such as collections for The Great Daffodil Appeal, hosting a Blooming Great Tea Party and whatever other events take the group’s fancy! Rebecca Bramley, local Community

Fundraiser for the charity said ‘We are looking for individuals who enjoy working as a team and have a genuine interest in supporting the work of Marie Curie locally, to help form a fantastic fundraising group in S35. “Our current groups do an

incredible job of raising money to support the local Marie Curie Nursing Service to provide care to people terminally ill with cancer and other illnesses, and what they need is people to join together to form more groups as they turn pennies into pounds”.

If you think you have a few hours spare every few weeks, live in the S35 postcode of Sheffield and would like to get involved with the fundraising group, please contact Rebecca on 01274 386190 or email rebecca. b r a m l e y @ mariecurie.org.uk

Bike Team Hits the Trails of Northern Sheffield

A bike has been seized and several notices issued to off-road bikers, quad riders and a 4x4 driver on common land to the North of Sheffield. Responding to feedback from the public, South Yorkshire Police (SYP) took to the trails that zig-zag the spoil heaps in Thorpe Hesley and nearby Westwood Country Park on Sunday 28 January,

where they gave advice to road-legal users and seized the bike of a rider who had already received a warning notice by West Yorkshire Police. Two suspected stolen vehicles were also found burnt out and SYP riders issued seven warnings under the Police Reform Act 2002 to groups they encountered at the two sites. Inspector

Chris

Lewis, of the Sheffield North East Neighbourhood Police team said: “Our latest operation has come as a direct result of walkers and families raising concerns around the presence of motor vehicles on common land. Not only do these bikes present a danger to others, they are damaging the natural environment and reducing the enjoyment of people accessing the areas

for legitimate means. We will do everything within our power to disrupt and deter the off-roaders.”

A nt i - s o c i a l behaviour and the criminality associated with the illegal use of off-road bikes are the primary targets of the police bike team. In recent months, the newlyformed team has seized 31 motorbikes in Sheffield alone. Twenty-three stolen vehicles have

Boogie Bounce lady Nicola Priestley has ditched a high flying career in law to bounce around the world - after swapping her desk for a trampoline. In a move which has seen her halve her working hours and double her income by becoming a Boogie Bounce instructor – Nicola couldn’t be happier. For as long as she could remember, her ambition was to become a lawyer. However, Nicola, now

25, of Stocksbridge, quickly discovered that the reality didn’t quite match the dream… Not only did she hate sitting in an office day in, day out – but the talented dancer also missed the joy, exhilaration and rush of ‘happy hormones’ that an active lifestyle had always given her. “I felt like I’d lost a part of myself,” she says. The final straw came when she was refused time off for

a Christmas trip to New York in 2015. “It suddenly struck me that life was too short to be stuck at a desk sorting out boundary disputes,” she says. “There was a big world out there and I wanted to see it.” After booking her flights she promptly handed in her resignation. “I felt like the weight of the world had been lifted from my shoulders,” she recalls. Returning from her

trip to the Big Apple, Nicola set to work creating her new career. Two years on, she has halved her working hours, more than doubled her income, and has just returned from her eighth holiday in 12 months. The secret? Boogie Bounce – an exercise class that involves bouncing to music on a mini trampoline. “I absolutely adore teaching people to bounce – and never

think of it as work,” she says. “Because there is no stress on the body anyone can do it; it boosts mood and metabolism and transforms lives.” Nicola’s love for dance and fitness came about almost by accident: “I was 13 when I enrolled in a weekly street dance class – so was quite a late starter. “When my teacher took me to one side, and said I should do other classes, I didn’t take her seriously.

In fact, I only took up ballet, tap and jazz dancing as she challenged me to give them a go.” Qualifying and launching three Boogie Bounce classes across Sheffield – in Hillsborough, Deepcar and High Green - gave Nicola the confidence to launch her own dance academy – and she now runs both companies simultaneously. “I’ve never been better off – and

happier,” she says. “In Stockbridge where I live they call me the Boogie Bounce lady! The men say their wives couldn’t cope without me. “My clients are amazing and feel like family to me. The best thing is being my own boss and having control over my own time and working hours. I have three shadow instructors who step in if I want a day or weekend off.” Nicola now has a starring role with Boogie Bounce

featuring in their promotional videos. She also plans to become a Master Trainer – running courses for instructors all over the world. And Nicola’s message to anyone out there envious of her lifestyle? “You can do it too,” she urges. “Don’t settle for a job you think you ought to do - do what really makes you happy. It’s true what they say; find a job you love and you’ll never work a day in your life.”

It’s not too late to make a will... Hello, I’m Jane Bowland, your local consultant of 10 years experience. We are experts in helping people arrange their wills, trusts and lasting powers of attorney. I specialise in helping all kinds of people gain peace of mind by providing professional estate planning services, but with a personal touch. I offer a FREE consultation without obligation for anybody who would like to know more about any of the following:

• Making a basic will • Setting up lasting powers of attorney • Protecting your home from care fees • Pre–paid funeral plans Having a Will in place ensures your assets go to who you choose. It makes the whole process much easier for the people you leave behind and it puts in black and white exactly what you want to happen, avoiding any misunderstanding or arguing. Setting up a Lasting Power of Attorney gives the people that YOU choose the legal right to look after your financial and personal affairs if you become unable to do so. Without one in place, your spouse, partner or family members are NOT automatically able

to take over. Make sure you avoid the distress this can cause you and your loved ones. I know that planning for the future is a very personal matter. Not everyone is able or wants to travel to an appointment in town to sort out their affairs. I can visit you at a convenient time in the comfort and privacy of your own home to discuss your circumstances. My visit and consultation is completely free and you are under no obligation

to do anything. If you decide to make any arrangements you can be safe in the knowledge that all my professional services and work are fully insured and Collective Legal Solutions are members of the Society of Will Writers, so all my clients are assured of being fully protected at all times. All my clients (and their families) that I have helped in the past have been very happy with my services and tell me they have gained great peace of mind knowing that they have sorted everything out.

Jane came to see my parents to help them protect the family home from any future care fees. She really made us all feel at ease, especially my parents. We had no idea what we could do to protect Mum and Dad. Having set up trusts and Lasting Power of Attorney’s, Mum and Dad can get on with their lives without worrying, knowing everything is now in place. Thank you Jane!

Smoke and mirrors

The spectacular collapse of Carillion shows that the present capitalist system is still working very very well for those who own can control it.

Dear Ed

It is estimated that these fat cats have made around £300 million out of them demise of the company. How does it all work? It’s simple: the hedge fund borrows shares and then sells them. When the value of the shares fall, they then buy them back and they can then return the shares to whoever they have borrowed them making a huge profit.

Got something to say? Email us at news@looklocal.org.uk

Having watched in 2014 that Carillion was heading for trouble these parasites borrowed shares from the company when the value of shares was high and then bought them back when the value crashed.

Publication subject to space and content. Publishing does not mean we agree with the content.

Assumptions I read with disgust the letter from Mrs B Smith in Ist Feb issue. I am not fully conversant with the in’s and out’s of how the Parish Council operates so cannot dispute her comments about funding. What I am appalled about is her assumptions about the people of High Green. Even though the “council estates” are quite large, many of the houses are now privately owned and along with the houses built as private in the first place, now make up a large proportion of the houses in the area. I agree that a large number of High Green properties fall into band A council tax. That is not our fault as we have no control over the setting of these rates. That is the councils responsibility. Many properties in the area are in the higher bandings. There are many houses in High Green valued over £200,000. As with all areas, a percentage of the High Green population is out of “paid” work. There are the scoungers, as there are everywhere, which will include the area that Mrs Smith lives in, but there are also many people who do voluntary work within the community while trying to find suitable paid work. As someone who has been lucky to have been in full time employment since 16 years of age, and know many many people in the area who have done likewise, I resent the implications made in her letter. So Mrs Smith, I respect that you are entitled to your opinions, but please do not presume that you know everything about an area you do not live in. Also do not tar everyone in an area with the same brush.

Hoyle on Hole

During the playtime at, The Infants School, Miss Cybil Whitehead came to me saying I have been reading with interest the letters “May we borrow your book for perusal?” I was appearing in local media recently, objecting to the proximately five years of age! proposed development of up to 93 new houses on agricultural green space located at Hollin Busk in Deepcar and as a result have ended up somewhat Discussing your essay of Hoyle-House land! Fairtrade Fortnight The Fairtrade Group would like to draw readers’ attention to Fairtrade Fortnight which takes place from February 27th to March 12th. As Stocksbridge has the honour of being a Fairtrade Town we hope that local people will join us in celebrating this event. There will be free Fairtrade coffee, tea and biscuits upstairs in the Library on the morning of February 28th and prizes to be won in a raffle on March 4th at the Co-op. We also plan a competition for school pupils with lots of prizes. If any local group is arranging a Fairtrade event of their own we would be pleased to hear about it. Fairtrade is what it says it is – trade that is fair to both the producer and the consumer. That’s something we can all support. Contact Margaret on 2882393 or Joan on 2888399.

I use the above centre generally once a week on Saturdays. The purpose of the visit is to dump plastic that is forbidden from the domestic bins - I find this ridiculous any way. Apparently ‘plastic’ Therefore perhaps someone knowledgeable can is not ‘plastic’. Many people visit the centre for the shed some detailed light for the uninitiated please? same reason. The state of the site is disgusting. The bins are often full, plastic bags and paper / cardboard is strewn all over the place. Can the powers that be please do something about this? I might add that accessing the site by car following the road markings not easy.

4 love stories to learn from Affairs of the heart are rarely simple. Whether in real life or on screen, fidelity, commitment, trust and the seemingly straightforward question of whether he or she is really that into you always threaten to disrupt and ruin what could be a very good thing. Or not. Hollywood has always had a notoriously schmaltzy approach to romance and love stories. Guys meets girl, they both fall in love, have some obstacle or other to overcome, manage to beat the rap and end up happily married for all time. That’s providing you’re not watching the high-school version, in which one of the couple (or both) are hideously geeky to begin with and must therefore undergo a complete personality change and makeover in order to bag the other’s heart. Needless to say, though, there’s far more to what we feel inside than

fully liCensed

these abysmally runof-the-mill narratives. And, thankfully, not every director in America is interested in telling such cheesy and predictable tales. Inspired by the more poignant end of mainstream cinema, we decided to list four love stories that people can learn from, irrespective of whether they have just lost or found that special someone, so take a look below... Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind ; dir. Michel Gondry; 2004 (Pictured)

Starring: Kate Winslet, Tom Wilkinson, Jim Carrey Could there be a better message than this: it’s better to have loved, lost, and still be able to remember the special moments than it is to forget and risk repeating the same mistakes. We say no, and given the contents of Gondry’s masterpiece - memory erasure and regrets over knee-jerk reactions post-break up - evidently so does the director.

est 1998 RestauRant & takeaway

wiNNer CUrry hOUSe Of The yeAr 2015 2nd place national • top 3 in sheffield

Casablanca ; dir. Michael Curtiz; 1942

Starring: Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, Paul Henreid Sharing little in common with our previous entry, other than reinforcing a cliched but nevertheless universal truth, we find ourselves in North Africa amid the Second World War as a drunken bar owner, Rick Blaine, puts on a brave face as he’s forced to help the woman he adores, Ilsa, in her attempts to flee Vichy Morocco with her new man. In short then, if you love something so much, sometimes you have to set it free. Silver Linings Playbook ; dir. David O. Russell; 2012 Starring: Bradley Cooper, Jennifer L a w r e n c e , Robert De Niro Recently released from a psychiatric ward at the request of his interfering mother, Pat has one thing on his mind - get in shape,

both mentally and physically, so he can get his estranged wife back (the restraining order and new lover not factoring in his decision making). Instead, he slowly begins to unknowingly fall head-over-heels for another damaged soul, proving that things often happen when you’re least expecting them to. Ruby Sparks ; dir. Spike Jonze; 2013

Starring: Paul Dano, Zoe Kazan, Annette Bening Calvin hasn’t penned anything significant since his teenage masterpiece novel, and is struggling for inspiration. Finding it in the eyes of an imaginary woman, he’s as surprised as we are when Ruby walks off the page and into his life. The problem is that when cracks begin to show in their relationship, the young scribe can’t resist trying to write them better, showing us that trying to change someone is never a good idea.

MORRISONS CREATES ‘LOVE CALCULATOR’ TO HELP Ecclesfield’S SHOPPERS FIND LOVE IN THE AISLES TREaT ThaT SOmEONE SPECIal ThIS ValENTINES LINGERIE, NIGHTWEAR & SWIMWEAR BOUTIQUE IN PENISTONE We offer a diverse range of brands, styles and sizes to suit everybody, with a personalised, discrete and free fitting service in a relaxed environment. Whether you need everyday wear, maternity, mastectomy teen bras or something indulgently luxurious, Frillies aims to make you feel fabulous about you. Nearly 1 in 4 have bought ‘wrong’ Valentine’s Day gifts Morrisons Ecclesfield is helping hopeless romantics navigate the year’s most difficult buying decision – what to buy your loved one for Valentine’s Day. The supermarket has worked with relationship expert Sam Owen to create a ‘Love Calculator’ for its shoppers after more than a third of people (34 per cent) say Valentine’s Day is the most ‘difficult’ buying occasion and 23 per cent said they had bought the ‘wrong’ gift in the past. The ‘Love Calculator’, which will be offered

to Morrisons Ecclesfield’s shoppers in the run up to Valentine’s Day, has over 40 decision-tree questions covering relationship status, current romance levels and partner personality traits in order to help guide people to the right gift. For example, a first time Valentine who wants to show their funny side is directed to heartshaped crumpets whilst a married couple who have lived together for a few years are guided towards oysters to get them in the mood for romance. When it comes to what people actually want, 99 per cent of Valentines say that money can’t buy you love and it’s

the thought that counts, as they prefer thoughtful gifts over expensive presents. Duncan Brookes, Store Manager at Morrisons Ecclesfield, said: “Choosing the right gift for Valentine’s Day can be difficult and we want to take the stress out of the occasion by helping our shoppers find the perfectlyjudged gift. The ‘Love Calculator’ aims to make our customers’ lives just that little bit easier.” Sam Owen, Relationship Expert and creator of the Morrisons Valentine’s Day ‘Love Calculator’, said: “Whatever stage of your relationship, Valentine’s Day

is always a tricky buying occasion with people often only a purchase away from romantic perfection or disaster. I hope the calculator can help all the hopeless romantics channel their thoughts and make the right gift decisions, so this Valentine’s Day is a love-ly one for all involved.” The Morrisons ‘Love Calculator’ will be given away for free from 11th – 14th February and is available to try online

The store’s in-house floristry and nail bar are both due to rebrand their businesses, expand their space and extend the range of services and products they offer. The store’s popular Nail Box, headed

by Stacey Leary is due to re-launch as Polished at the end of February and will offer a new range of fabulous beauty treatments including individual and Russian lashes, eyelash tinting, lifting and perming and spray tans – as well as continuing to provide a high quality nail service. Stacey is taking on a larger area at the store at the end of February which will be located towards the rear of the ladies wear department on the first floor at Sandersons. She’ll also be taking on an additional member of staff.

Stacey said: “I can’t wait to re-launch my business with new branding, new services and in a brand new location in the store which will be the perfect environment for the new treatments we’ll be offering. The store is also expanding the floristry area with a stunning new glazed cove being created at the front of the busy north Sheffield d e p a r t m e nt store to create a beautiful “orangerie” atmosphere for customers. Currently called Floral Boutique and owned by local florist Lisa Crossland the

business will relaunch under the new name “Fleur de Lys” at the end of February. Lisa said: “The brand new floristry space which is currently being created is going to look amazing and will enable me to offer an even wider range of gorgeous and top quality flowers and plants for all occasions in a really beautiful environment. Fleur de Lys will launch on 23rd February and Polished will open for business on 26th February.

Tour de Yorkshire – May the 4th be with you Barnsley!

It is now less than 100 days until the Tour de Yorkshire comes to Barnsley. Friday 4 May will see Barnsley host the start of the second day of racing, with both the women’s and men’s events setting off from outside the town hall before heading out across the borough. Large crowds are expected to flock to the event to see world elite level cyclists, including multiple Tour de France stage winner Mark Cavendish, and it’s an opportunity for residents and businesses to get involved as Barnsley is seen by a worldwide audience.

With the race coming to Barnsley on official ‘Star Wars day’ Barnsley will be hosting the ‘May the Toys Be With You’ exhibition to the Experience Barnsley Museum and Discovery Centre. Running from Saturday 21 April to Sunday 15 July, this touring exhibition is of one of the country’s finest Star Wars collections of memorabilia, toys and posters owned by collector Matt Fox. The toys and collectables including X-wings, lightsabers, posters and figures will all be on display in this magical exhibition for people of all ages to enjoy.

In the coming weeks, there will be opportunity to get involved with the ‘Great Barnsley Bunt Off ’, a fantastic community project for making bunting, and getting other decoration ideas, whether it’s for a school, community group, business or even your own house and street. Barnsley will also cohost another Tour de Yorkshire roadshow with Welcome to Yorkshire at Elsecar Heritage centre on Tuesday 27 February. The roadshows are a great opportunity for residents, businesses and schools to find out how the tour will affect them on

the day, as well as providing further information on how to get involved and make the most of the event. People can register for a free place here. Cllr Sir Steve Houghton, CBE, Leader of the Council said: “In the build up to the big day we hope as many people as possible will join in with the planned activities and decorate their homes, schools and businesses on the route. We put on a fantastic show last year and I’m sure that we will do even better this time.

MP supports ban on ivory trade Angela Smith MP, recently showed her support for WWF’s campaign to end the illegal wildlife trade by attending a charity event in the Houses of Parliament to celebrate China’s ivory ban, which came in to force this month. The situation for elephants is critical, with around 55 a day being killed for their ivory – this means more African elephants are being poached for their ivory than are being born. Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson addressed the reception, which was also attended by Environment S e c r e t a r y Michael Gove, r e p r e s e ntative s of the Chinese Embassy and MPs and Lords

from across the political parties. Jointly hosted by WWF and the Chinese embassy, the reception highlighted that, if successful, the Chinese closure of its ivory markets will reduce opportunities to buy and sell illegal ivory, and help to reduce demand. But it is important that other, neighbouring countries follow suit with similar laws, to ensure that this sickening trade does not simply shift to places with weaker laws. The Chinese move comes as a proposal to also ban ivory trade in the UK has been announced by the UK Government. Many people responded to the recent consultation on this plan, and WWF is calling for

confirmation of a UK ban before The London Conference on Illegal Wildlife Trade, which takes place on 1011 October 2018. In her speech, Tanya Steele, chief executive at WWF said: “The appalling numbers speak for themselves: because of this sickening trade some 20,000 African elephants are killed each year and their population has plummeted. The trade not only affects elephants, but has negative impacts on people too – on local livelihoods, sustainable development and it is linked to corruption and other organised crime. “We welcome

China’s closure of its legal ivory market as this could make a real difference for Africa’s elephants. We also call on neighbouring countries to close their domestic ivory markets too so that demand does not shift across borders to countries without the same regulation. And we now urge UK Ministers to confirm a UK ban well before the London Conference in October 2018.” Angela commented: “As someone who has been campaigning for a total ban on the ivory I was delighted to be able to attend WWF and the Chinese Embassy’s reception, and show my support for ending the ivory trade in China. A world without

African elephants is unthinkable, and governments across the world need to do everything they can to ensure it never happens. We now need to keep pushing our own Government to fulfil its own promise and introduce a ban in the UK on the trading of Ivory. I know people in north Sheffield and west Barnsley care deeply about this issue, and tens of thousands of people responded to the UK Government’s recent consultation on banning the ivory trade. We now need to get on and do it – 2018 should be the year when we turn the tide on the poaching of elephants and other precious wildlife.”

Tour De Yorkshire Land Art Competition Launched

2018 Tour De Yorkshire Land Art Competition L a u n c h e d ! Welcome to Yorkshire is on the lookout for the county’s best creations after launching its annual Tour de Yorkshire land art competition. Last year’s contest proved another huge success with massive, eye-catching pieces being displayed along the race route

and Barnsley is once again involved.

The planned closure of the council’s multi-storey car park provides the perfect opportunity for Creative Recovery, a local charity supporting people in recovery from drug and alcohol and mental health issues, who’ve been commissioned to transform the openair top level of the car park into a giant

piece of land art.

A second high profile piece is also planned, as 2018 marks the 50th anniversary of the publication of Kestrel for a Knave by Barry Hines, which was subsequently created into the film, Kes. Commissioned at the Platts Common recreation ground, Hoyland, artists Patrick Murphy and Anton will be working with the Dearne

Valley Landscape Partnership to create a collection of new artworks celebrating the work of Barry Hines.

‘The Kestrel’ large piece, adjacent to the route is a contemporary interpretation of one of the key images linked to the book and the film It will be visible from the surrounding area, both from the air and at ground level,

reflecting the cycling that will pass by.

Bu s i n e s s e s , landowners, farmers, schools and community groups are now being encouraged to get creative once again ahead of the fourth edition, of which Barnsley will host stage two on Friday 4 May. To find out about community involvement in Barnsley, visit: www. barnsley.gov.uk/tdy

Last year a giant piece of art celebrating the 200th birthday of Branwell Brontë, commissioned by Andrew Wood from Fields of Vision with the help of children from Haworth Primary School, was crowned the winner after an international public vote, and the coveted trophy is now up for grabs once again. Sir

Gary

Verity,

Chief Executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, said: “Stunning land art is now synonymous with the Tour de Yorkshire and it’s one of the many things that makes our race so special. “In no other event do you see these imaginative creations on such a spectacular scale and people around the world love tuning in to see them.

“These fantastic pieces really bring the race to life and give people the chance to celebrate their communities.” For more information competition visit http:// letouryorkshire. com/landart

Students pride at representing Yorkshire

Three Barnsley College students have been selected to represent Yorkshire and Humber’s rugby squad at the Association of Colleges’ National Championships in Nottingham.

Eleanor Greenaway, Megan Slater and Hannah Dickinson, who are all 16 years old, will have the opportunity to gain experience of playing at a higher level by representing the College in a nationally recognised competition. The students, who currently play for Sandal Girls under18s, will compete in the Rugby Sevens competition which is a variant of rugby union where teams made up of seven players play seven minute halves. All three students are part of the Barnsley Sports Academy within College and this has enabled them to access an Elite Sports Performance Bursary to fund aspects

of the competition such as equipment and travel. Hannah, of Royston, said: “I was shocked and overwhelmed when I found out I would be representing Yorkshire and Humber, it’s a very special feeling. The tutors at the College have been fantastic and have really supported us.” Eleanor, of Wakefield, added: “I developed an interest in the sport after my sister had trials to play for England, this has inspired me to progress into women’s rugby. The College is always pushing us to achieve more and have really helped with our confidence.” Megan, of Lindhurst, added: “The support I have received from the Sports Academy has really helped me to pursue my goals in rugby and the coaching staff are knowledgeable about the sport. Our main focus is to go out there and win.”

3rd place for hinchliffe

church romp to away win

Saturday 3rd February 2018 Toolstation NCEL Premier Division

Hall Road Rangers 1-4 Penistone Church FC Tom Brennan Frazer Hansen , og , Andy Ring, Freddie Russel

Thirty-nine club members took part in the Dewsbury 10k road race, one of the premier events on the northern club running calendar, with over 1200 competitors. The race also featured the first leg of the revamped club championship. Pride of place went to Scott Hinchcliffe, who finished 3rd overall in the race in a top quality field in yet another club record time of 32:00. Next back was Gareth Cooke in a pb of 33:58. The men’s team was completed by Andrew Heppenstall who ran 35:48. The team just missed out on first place by an agonising 4 seconds, demonstrating the increasing strength in depth of its running resources. There were also pbs right across the board, including a massive one for Damien Briscoe (36:22), Martin Ball, Megan Button, Shelley Gill, Ashleigh Bowskill, Marysia Pozorski, Jill Carlton, Julie Darigala, Matthew Coldwell, Dawn Godley, Andrea Henson, Paul Fryers, Myfanwy Cross. The youngest PFR runner, Tom Fryers, equalled his pb. Elsewhere, six club members completed the Mickleden Straddle fell race over 14.5 miles. First back was John Tomlinson in 2:17.49 in 66th position. Next was Chris Deacon in 2:31.18. Annie Lightowler was the only female club runner, finishing in 3:36.03.

The opening goal of the game arrived just before half time. It came from a corner as Tom Brennan tucked home to give Penistone the lead. Despite the 1-0 score at half time, The home team stayed in the game for the first 20 minutes of the second half. Penistone creating the better chances, with Andy Ring blazing over the bar and Nathan Keightley sending his chance high and wide. Pensitone doubled their lead on the hour mark in bizarre circumstances. Fraser Hansen headed into his own net after James Hitchcock had produced a fine save to keep Penistone out. After this, Penistone took full control of the game and looked to

add to their two goal lead. Church ultimately sealed the victory in the 88th minute when Andy Ring finished well to score. Substitute Freddie Russell was allowed to send his free header into the back of the net. He was picked out well from a free kick into the penalty box to score with his first touch. Hall Road grabbed a consolation goal and Church were denied a fifth goal after the home goalkeper produced another fine save in a frantic finale. Manager Ian Richards commented on the game. An exceptional performance today, probably a complete away performance. The only disappointment was their goal right in the dying moments but I’m not going to let that over shadow a brilliant performance on a difficult pitch against a very dangerous side. I thought defensively every man did their jobs and made it very hard for them to score or create any open chances and I thought offensively we were excellent.”

Oughtibridge ladies are top of the league - and that’s official! ð&#x;˜€After last season’s struggles, it’s fantastic that the first team now sit at the top of the East Midlands Premier League after a 9-1 win over Eastwood Ladies, hat-tricks for Kathryn Mudge and Lauren Turner, two for player of the match Laura Watton and one for Bex Shaw.

The Ladies went top of the East Midlands Premier League in a game that was over in the first 20 minutes as the hosts raced into a 4-0 lead. Eastwood changed formation to stem the tide from then on in but the damage was already done and it really was a case of how many as the away

keeper Chloe Beadle was called on time and again.

This Sunday the War Memorial Ladies have a more difficult task as they travel to face an improving Loughborough Students, who were outstanding in a 1-1 draw in the recent home fixture. O u g h t i b r i d g e Development Team also recorded home win with a 3-2 local derby victory over Sheff Wed Development, the prolific Hannah Redman with 2 and Maisie Newton with the winner Steels postponed Despite their away game at Carlton Town being

postponed on Saturday due to a waterlogged pitch, Stocksbridge PS moved up a place and were handed a play-off boost, when fourth-placed Cleethorpes in the Evo-stik division 1 south were deducted 12 points for fielding an ineligible player. Moving Steels up one place above Cleethorpes. Steels next travel to Spalding United this Saturday and now have to fit in 18 games in the 12 remaining weeks of the season. Steels reserve side take on Penistone Church in the S&H Senior cup quarter finals this Wednesday 7.45pm at Penistone.

Blades super draw Civil service B 0 - 14 Oughtibridge WMFC Another big win for the War Memorial with a hattrick of hattrick heroes. With Ollie Black, Matt Harrison and Josh Walker all scoring 3 a piece. Oughtibridge played some great football in tough conditions. With the helping hand of further goals from Chas Tunnard, Evan Watson x2 and Ross Brown with 2 well taken goals. Credits due to Civils keeper who made some excellent saves to keep the scoreline to a minimum. Thank you very Mudge: Kathryn Mudge scored a hat-trick in a 9-1 home win. Photo Ian Revitt
