RETURN OF THE SEVEN Wedding feature - page 14-15

royd pupils stay safe - page 05

THE Magnificent Seven cycle race will have a new base when it returns to Bradfield for the third time on Sunday March 11. The event will start and finish in Bradfield – a picturesque Peak District village which sits within the Sheffield boundary just seven miles outside of the city centre – to allow more entries and more space for parking. The race is one of four headline events of The Outdoor City Weekender, running at locations across Sheffield from March 9 to 11. A cross between a sportive and a hill climb, the Magnificent Seven will see 130 cyclists – that’s 30 more than last year – battle up seven of Sheffield’s toughest ascents. The 2018 route, which is slightly more than 26 miles long, presents each rider with over 4,200ft of climbing and inclines ranging from 9 to 23 per cent. The race begins at 8.30am and takes in Mill Lee Road and Hoar Stones Road, Hagg Hill, Blake Street, Fern Road and Thrush Street, Birch House Avenue and Birks Wood Drive, Back Lane, and the infamous Cote de Bradfield. This final climb challenged the world-class Tour de France riders at the Yorkshire Grand Depart in 2014 and provides spectacular views over Sheffield from its summit. Event organiser Marc Etches said: “We are really pleased to be part of The Outdoor City Weekender and are looking forward to showcasing our great city once more with the Magnificent Seven. “Last year’s event was superb and we’re increasing the entries from 100 to 130 for 2018 to meet demand. Magnificent Seven to return to Bradfield Continued from front page “The event is unique in the UK and gives the competitors the opportunity to race up traffic-free closed roads, for which we thank Sheffield City Council. “Professional riders are usually the only ones who get to ride on closed roads so this is a great selling point for the event, as evidenced by the veteran’s category selling out on the first day, which was amazing. “We are really looking forward to seeing the support from local residents, especially the crowds on Hagg Hill, Blake Street and the Thrush Street cobbles. This support is fantastic for the event and much appreciated by organisers and riders alike. “The route really showcases Sheffield as The Outdoor City and the riders will be treated to some spectacular views at the top of every climb, especially the highlight of this year’s route – the Cote de Bradfield.” Cyclists will ride with motorbike escorts and lead cars between each of the seven hills, and then gather at the bottom of each of the hills – which will be closed for the event – before racing for points to the summit. The first 15 to the top then receive points which count towards the grand prize of being crowned King or Queen of the Mountains, for which the winners receive a trophy. The ride is aimed at amateur club riders and, as well as capturing the imagination of local clubs, attracts cyclists from across the country to take up the seven hill challenge. Both men and women over 16 are encouraged to ride with equal prize money for both categories and there’s also a prize for the over 40s, as the fastest veterans are awarded separate points and prizes. Last year’s men’s champion Andy Nichols will be defending his title against tough competition from the likes of Cycling Sheffield’s Joe Clark who finished 4th in the National Hill Climb Championships, Calum Brown and Rick Bailey from B38 Underpin Racing and notable climber Andy Cunningham from All Terrain Cycles. Stand-out female favourite is Rebecca Goodson, who missed out on first place last year by just one point, as well as 2017 entrants Molly Horsley Frost and Abbie Taylor, who finished 4th and 6th, respectively. The veteran category, which sold out in less than nine hours, sees some new riders stepping up for the first time. James Allen from Sheffrec Cycling Club is a firm favourite, and Simon Warren who finished 3rd last year, as well as newcomers Simon Froberg and Olly Humphreys, will be giving everyone a run for their money. All entrants will receive refreshments before and afterwards, and each rider will also receive a free cycling cap for their efforts. Cow bells will again be handed out to spectators along the route to help cheer the riders along the tough climbs. Places are filling up very fast. Council publishes budget proposals to address £44 million funding gap SHEFFIELD City Council has published proposals that they say will meet the challenge of a £44 million funding gap next year due to rising demand for essential council services and further government austerity cuts. Proposals brought forward to meet the budget gap include £3 million of savings through renegotiations on the Veolia waste contract, an increase to the council tax of 2.99% following the government’s decision to lift the cap from 1.99% and a further increase to the social care precept introduced by the government in 2015. Sheffield council tax payers will see an average £1.10 per week increase to their council tax bills, from April 2018. Next year the council will invest an additional £15 million on services to provide care for adults and children, due to the high increases in demand for these services. However, despite this, these services have still had to make significant savings due to the scale of increases in need for these services in the city. Councillor Olivia Blake, Deputy Leader of the Council and Cabinet Member for Finance said: “We are seeing, across the country, the impact that continued austerity and increased cuts are having on council services. “Last week this reached a tipping point for one council which had to stop all spending because

they have fallen over the cliff edge. In Sheffield, we have had to bridge another £44 million gap this year in addition to the £390 million over the previous seven years. “Whilst we have robust plans in place to address these issues, the position nationally is quite frankly unsustainable into the longer term. “Sometimes the reality of the cuts can get lost in the numbers, but this means reductions in services across the board. “At the same time as we have seen repeated cuts, there are also unprecedented cost pressures on our services due to the national social care crisis. We are being forced to pick up the human cost that austerity is having on our city through increased poverty, and the impacts for children in care. “As a council we will always prioritise the services for those in greatest need but we also have a responsibility to maintain the core services that the people of Sheffield use. From our budget consultation we know that this is what people want to see and we have also been able to invest in infrastructure through our capital programme in flood defences, building new homes and transforming the city centre through the retail quarter.” The council’s 2018/19 draft budget will be discussed at a Cabinet meeting on February 14. The final budget will be approved at a full council meeting on March 7.

During road safety day, children had the opportunity to use the crossing, where the lollipop lady taught the children how to cross the road safely. On fire safety day the children were taught what to do in the event of a fire and practised the ‘stop, drop and roll’ procedure.

The children produced some great posters reminding others what to do if their clothes caught fire. Throughout the week the school had lots of visitors including Sue Finnigan who taught the children how to keep safe when using the internet. Sue also held an information session for parents to inform parents about how to keep their child safe when using the internet. A police officer and a local PCSO came in to do an assembly on ‘stranger danger’. Also, two paramedics taught the children what to do if they or someone they knew had an accident. They brought lots

of equipment with them including their paramedic car. Mr Sly, assistant headteacher, commented: “Safety week was a great away of exposing our children on how to stay safe. “The practical nature of the workshops combined with having visitors coming into our school to speak to the children really helped engage them and consolidate their understanding. “We would like to say a big thank you to all of our visitors for supporting our school during safety week and for teaching the children some very important messages.”

Clean and Green Sheffield: £1.9m investment will repower buses SHEFFIELD will be a cleaner and greener city by the end of the year as Sheffield City Council announces record new investment in the city’s bus fleet.

£1.9m will be invested to retrofit 117 buses across the Sheffield network with emission reduction technology. Once upgraded, the buses will produce less NOx emissions per kilometre than many types of modern car. The retrofit will reduce NOx emissions of buses to Euro VI standard, complying with standards set out in the council’s own ambitious Clean Air Strategy.

MP presents petition to Parliament MP Angela Smith has presented a petition to Parliament asking RBS to think again about the closure two of its Nat West branches in her constituency. The petition, which has over 1,400 names on it, has been collected by local activists fighting the closure of the two branches. If RBS does close these branches in Stocksbridge and Penistone, it will leave both towns without banking services and only one bank in the whole of the constituency.

Commenting on the petition Angela said: “The news that RBS had decided to close its Nat West branches in Penistone and Stocksbridge is devastating for both towns and will mean both will no longer have any banking services at all. “It’s quite clear from the number of signatures that have been collected that local people believe this is a poor decision by RBS and that they want it reversed. “I was more than pleased to have received this petition and was

proud to present it to the House of Commons. “I hope RBS will now start to listen to local opinion and change its mind on these closures. I also hope Government will respond positively to this petition by intervening to negotiate a stop to these closures before it is too late. “Can I also thank the petitioners for bringing this petition to me, especially Cllr Joe Unsworth, Cllr Richard Crowther, Jo Newing, and Francyne Johnson who organised the collection of the signatures.”

They are currently on the lookout for local organisations and groups to show off what they

can do by taking part as one of the main or small arena acts. This could be the local football team playing a five a side game, the Karate club chopping their way through a few planks or the Allotment Society giving a unique wheelbarrow handling display! The possibilities are as broad as the many things you do to make

The UK’s hopes for Eurovision are pinned on Lucie Jones THE BURTON Street Foundation are having a Eurovision party and everyone is invited! Recruit your friends, round up your family and grab your campest gladrags as you’re invited to an evening of poptastic fun times at Burton Street’s 2018 Eurovision knees-up! They’ll be powering up the glitter ball and rolling down the big screen, beaming the entire Eurovision final live from Lisbon straight into their home in Hillsborough. And you better be hungry as we’ve got quite a menu planned. Each ticket includes an immersive culinary tour of Europe, brought to you by the same team behind our ever-popular Burton Street Bistro. Burton Street’s creative, talented professional chefs have got fantastically carried away, preparing a frankly ridiculous 10 course tasting menu.

Served throughout the evening rather than in one big sitting, each dish is inspired by local delicacies of the nationalities that came in the top ten during Eurovision 2017. Take a gastrotour of the continent without leaving your seat! For any youngsters feeling a little less adventurous, don’t worry; there’ll have a mini-Brit menu just for them, this is a child friendly event. There’ll also be the usual fully stocked bar serving a range of beers, wines, prosecco and various cocktails. Be in with a chance of winning fantastic prizes with the silly sweepstake, daft quiz, and bingo! And if you fancy a little dance then fear not, there will be space! If you’ve ever fancied a proper Eurovision knees-up, Burton Street is giving it the full douze points.

Tickets are available on Tickets for Good from https:// events.ticketsforgood.co.uk/ events/611-eurovision-2018knees-up and Eventbrite on https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/ eurovision-2018-knees-up-tickets-42630317427 For more menu and venue details visit Burton Street’s website at http://www.burtonstreet. co.uk/whatson/event/770-eurovision-2018 The Burton Street Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation serving the community. It is situated in a complex of Victorian school buildings in Hillsborough. Over 1,500 people use Burton Street every week and they specialise in supporting adults and older children with learning and physical disability but they also offer a very wide range of other activities for the public.

Oughtibridge brownies raise money for MIND

ON Saturday January 27, the 152nd Oughtibridge Brownies raised £157.51 for MIND with a Britain’s Got Brownies Show. Brown Owl, Amanda Pearson, asked the Brownies if they could suggest a charity to raise money for, and one of the Brownies, whose mum is a mental health and psychological assessment worker, suggested MIND.

As only one of the other Brownies knew about MIND, or what it stood for, Brown Owl felt that this would be an amazing opportunity to raise awareness amongst these 24 young girls about mental health issues. They put it to the vote and it was carried, 20 to four!

On the night, there was lots of laughter from the very supportive family audience, as they watched Little Owl young leader Alice - be wound up by a group of sweet smiling Brownies singing, ‘There’s a hole in my bucket, dear Little Owl, dear Little Owl’.

In only three meetings, the Brownies put together an amazing variety of talent: two violinists, a flutist, soloists, actresses and dancers.

The room was lit up as the Brownies sang and danced to ‘Bring me Sunshine’, and there wasn’t a dry eye in the house as many of the Brownies sang solos or duets to ‘How Far I’ll Go’ from Moana.

Many memories were raised by re-enactments of campfire sketches and Ezzie Owl, Hooty Tooty Owl Laura, and Brown Owl even did a sketch dressed as a rival Rainbow, Brownie and Guide!

MIND Sheffield said: “We are so pleased that you have chosen to support your local MIND and can confirm that all the money generated will be invested in local service delivery.

At the end of the evening, the young women and givers of the future had managed to raise £157.51 with ticket sales, a raffle and refreshments. The laughter was still echoing in the hall as the remaining Brownies counted up the proceeds.

“Although we are affiliated to national MIND we are independent and rely on the support of organisations such as yours to fund our work – you can read all about it on the website at www.sheffieldmind.co.uk.

It’s not too late to make a will... Hello, I’m Jane Bowland, your local consultant of 10 years experience. We are experts in helping people arrange their wills, trusts and lasting powers of attorney. I specialise in helping all kinds of people gain peace of mind by providing professional estate planning services, but with a personal touch. I offer a FREE consultation without obligation for anybody who would like to know more about any of the following:

• Making a basic will • Setting up lasting powers of attorney • Protecting your home from care fees • Pre–paid funeral plans Having a Will in place ensures your assets go to who you choose. It makes the whole process much easier for the people you leave behind and it puts in black and white exactly what you want to happen, avoiding any misunderstanding or arguing. Setting up a Lasting Power of Attorney gives the people that YOU choose the legal right to look after your financial and personal affairs if you become unable to do so. Without one in place, your spouse, partner or family members are NOT automatically able

to take over. Make sure you avoid the distress this can cause you and your loved ones. I know that planning for the future is a very personal matter. Not everyone is able or wants to travel to an appointment in town to sort out their affairs. I can visit you at a convenient time in the comfort and privacy of your own home to discuss your circumstances. My visit and consultation is completely free and you are under no obligation

to do anything. If you decide to make any arrangements you can be safe in the knowledge that all my professional services and work are fully insured and Collective Legal Solutions are members of the Society of Will Writers, so all my clients are assured of being fully protected at all times. All my clients (and their families) that I have helped in the past have been very happy with my services and tell me they have gained great peace of mind knowing that they have sorted everything out.

Jane came to see my parents to help them protect the family home from any future care fees. She really made us all feel at ease, especially my parents. We had no idea what we could do to protect Mum and Dad. Having set up trusts and Lasting Power of Attorney’s, Mum and Dad can get on with their lives without worrying, knowing everything is now in place. Thank you Jane!

All our Labour and Lib Dem councillors agreed with Mrs B Smith’s utterly disgusting letter of the February 1. Labour and Lib Dems also tried to block a petition prior to it being presented, for the fifth time. A first for any council I think. Â

We hope that you will be able to support us at one or other of these events, helping to promote the aim of ensuring that throughout the world everyone gets a fair deal. That is something that has not always happened, but thanks to the 500+ Fairtrade Towns, including Stocksbridge, the situation is improving. If you would like more information call us on 2882393 or 2883899. Once again, apologies for last week’s error.

The extent of this speculative rent seeking practice was provided by the housing charity Shelter which reported in December 2015 that the top nine housebuilder’s in the FTSE 100 & FTSE 250 were sitting on over 600,000 individual plots of housing land. It is little wider we have such a shortage of affordable housing for our young people or that some local councils struggle to meet Government housebuilding land targets. Not to mention the contributory factor towards levels of homelessness.

Certainly scope exists within the 2012 National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) giving objectors and Local Planning Authorities (LPA’s) sufficient material to prevent the Hollin Busk application succeeding. However, leaving aside the extremely selective usage of the provisions in the Framework and the misleading statistics and arguments put forward by those submitting this application, a snapshot of the wider context provides some clues towards answering Mr Parker’s rhetorical question.

Firstly, the pressing issue for Local Authorities is the contradictory requirements imposed upon them by current Central Government to safeguard open greenfield spaces under the Framework whilst at the same time meeting the Government rolling target of constantly maintaining a five years supply of sites for house building. Unsung heroes Dear Sir / Madam, I’m writing to say a big thank you to a group of unsung heroes working in the area. They work unsociable hours, in sometimes quite atrocious conditions, on what I understand to be very little pay. I speak of course of local takeaway chefs and delivery drivers. Where would we be without this dedicated group of people, willing to work till the early hours of the morning so that we can enjoy a pizza or donner kebab when we get in from the pub. Isn’t it time for us all to raise a glass to these unsung heroes of our time? As such, could the council hold an award ceremony to celebrate the role they play in making our community a better place to live? Mr D Lodge - takeaway guru Ecclesfield

Oughtibridge youngsters crowned cross country champions

Details 07387 995 729 07555 530 328

War Memorial Ladies stay top Loughborough Students 0 Oughtibridge WM Ladies 4 OUGHTIBRIDGE War Memorial Ladies retained top spot in the East Midlands Regional Premier League with a 4-0 win at Loughborough Students. Despite the arctic-like conditions the playing surface was immaculate at the Holywell Park University sports complex, encouraging good football from both sides. The first half was a pretty even affair with Loughborough looking comfortable despite the pressure put on them but after the interval Oughtibridge got the vital break as Jen Selman ran on to a loose ball to calmly slot home. Moments later it was 2-0 as Kathryn Mudge buried a tremendous header from Cam Liburd’s cross. On the hour the contest was over, Chloe Rodgers was hauled down 25 yards out and Mudge planted the free kick in the top corner for 3-0. This stunned Loughborough into action and they had a couple of decent efforts but Annie Longmore produced excellent fingertip saves on both sides, the second one on to the post and away. The icing was put on the cake in injury time as Mudge met Fran Godbehere’s superb corner to head home for another hat-trick and the player of the match award. This Sunday Oughtibridge host Peterbrough Northern Star Ladies at the War Memorial with a 2pm kick off.

OUGHTIBRIDGE Primary School’s Year Five and Six Cross Country team are now the South Yorkshire champions - what a great achievement. Mrs Fearn and Miss Liasides said on behalf of the school: “We are so incredibly proud of you all! We would like to say a big thank you to the pupils, parents and volunteers who have attended the early races on cold Saturday mornings throughout the season!”

Church stalemate with table toppers PENISTONE Church FC faced AFC Mansfield on Saturday, the Toolstation NCEL Premier Division leaders who are unbeaten in 16 games. They came away with a very creditable 0-0 draw in front of a crowd of 223. Manager Ian Richards said: “Today showed how far we have progressed this season, showed what a fantastic group of players we have at this football club and what a fantastic club they play for. “There were two hundred and twenty plus there, fully com-

mitted supporters, people saying they’ve started coming this season and they’re going to continue coming to watch because of the atmosphere, the quality, the endeavour of the players and today’s game epitomised that. “We must remember we were playing the runaway leaders AFC Mansfield who are sixteen games unbeaten, thirteen consecutive wins and not just sneaking wins but dominating games and scoring a lot of goals.

“We’ve kept them to a clean sheet the first game this season they haven’t scored and in the first half we were the better team and we created the better chances. “We lost Andy Ring at half time with a groin injury, he was having a great game who is pivotal to how we play, he links up play and is good in the air and we adapted and again the squad proved how good they are, they do everything you ask.

Winter action for Footpath Runners SIX Penistone Footpath Runners competed in the final event of the Barnsley AC winter track series, covering the 25 laps of the 10,000m distance. First back in a new club record time was Scott Hinchcliffe in 32:27.8. Next came Gareth Cooke in 33:58.7. Shaun Dimelow was first V45 in 36:26.1 whilst Damien Briscoe ran 36:43.1. Simon Pike ran 39:36.9 and Paul Fryers 45:01.6.

Four runners took part in the Winter Half Tour of Bradwell in challenging conditions with constant drizzle and a stiff breeze. Richard Mackie was first back in 2:27.11 followed by Ian Charlesworth, Paul Fryers and Brent Lindsay. Dawn and John Broom established new club records for the 30k distance at the classic Stamford Striders Valentines Race, run through the rolling lanes of Lincolnshire and Rutlandshire.

Jemma Williams completed the Dukeries 10 mile multi-terrain race in North Nottinghamshire.

Scandi stars added to Stead farewell

SCANDINAVIAN stars Hans Andersen and Jacob Thorssell are the latest big names to be included in Simon Stead’s farewell meeting next month.

Andersen is one of the most experienced riders in this year’s Premiership and has represented Denmark in the World Cup and Grand Prix competitions. Swedish racer Thorssell, meanwhile, is a firm favou-

rite with Wolverhampton and has raced as a wildcard in the SGP series.

and I hope plenty of Leicester and Wolverhampton fans will come and join us.

They join World Champion Jason Doyle and Slovakian superstar Martin Vaculik in what is rapidly becoming a brilliant line-up on Sunday March 25, starting at 4pm, at Owlerton Stadium.

“Hans is a great signing for Leicester, I know Poole were very reluctant to release him from their side because he is a slid points scorer.

Said Stead: “Both Hans and Jacob were quick to accept my invite. I’m delighted to have them both at Sheffield

“He’s got loads of experience and he will enjoy riding at Owlerton. “Jacob has got a big season ahead as the new Wolver-

hampton No.1 and coming back from injury. It will be great to see how he gets on around the big Sheffield track.”

“It’s amazing to have Jonny on board, he’s been by my side in the pits throughout the country over the last decade,” he said.

The news comes hot on the heels of a meeting sponsor for ‘SS The Last Lap’ event.

“When he said he wanted to be meeting sponsor to promote Pennine Blinds I couldn’t believe it. I’d urge everyone to support his business.”

Pennine Blinds is owned by Stead’s best friends Jonny Bailey and his wife and both were keen to get involved.

Harrogate Pythons 25 -16 Stocksbridge STOCKSBRIDGE RUFC face a tough battle to avoid relegation after yet another defeat saw them propping up the Yorkshire Three table. The 25-16 defeat away to Harrogate Pythons was their 15th of the season and although they are looking competitive in their games, they haven’t managed to turn their performances into results. They trail Baildon by just one point at the foot of the table, although Baildon do have two games in hand over the north Sheffield side. It gets no easier for the Pigs with them facing third-placed Wensleydale next.

Coleman scores from corner but misses penalty as Steels draw Spalding 1-1 Stocksbridge Park Steels

By David Bradley IT was all about Rory Coleman at Spalding United. The game was played in atrocious conditions, the pitch was more like a mud bath from the 70s than a surface we are used to seeing these days. The pitch was instrumental to Steels’ ultimate downfall. It started in the first half when Spalding played a through ball to Siddons and what looked liked a great tackle from Matt Reay couldn’t stop the ball from trickling past David Reay and in off the post. Steels should have been level soon after but Lums-

den hit the crossbar when he should have scored. Spalding then also hit the framework of the goal five minutes later when a wonderful curling shot from Varley struck the post and the rebound luckily fell straight into David Reay’s arms. But then Steels were awarded a corner kick and Coleman swung it in and to everyone’s amazement the ball went straight in the net. The only player who celebrated was Rory Coleman as his teammates were as shocked as anyone. But Rory Coleman wasn’t finished as Steels were awarded a penalty in the last

minute of the game after Jack Poulton was bundled over in the penalty area. The ball wouldn’t stay in the on the spot so was moved forward slightly. As Rory went to kick the ball the mud was effecting his run up and his standing foot. He could only hit the ball into the post. After the game, Rory said he was “gutted for the penalty miss and apologised. Overall a 1-1 draw was fair result on a poor pitch. Steels face Market Drayton next on Saturday February 17, away from home. Their next home game is against Corby Town on February 24 with a 3pm kick off.
