Life in prison for man who attempted to kill four young children

A MAN who almost killed four children, assaulting them with a hammer before deliberately driving his car into a stone wall, has been jailed for life, with a 28-year tariff. The children, who were aged eight, seven, 21 months and nine-months old at the time of the incident, were all left with either serious or life-threatening injuries, with one child still in hospital almost six months on. Owen Peter Scott, of Heather Road, Fawley, Hampshire, appeared before Sheffield Court on Thursday February 15, where he was jailed for four counts of attempted murder, after pleading guilty at an earlier hearing. He was jailed for a total of 28-years with a requirement to serve a minimum of 14. Scott, 29, was arrested in August last year after an off-duty officer witnessed him drive his car into a wall in Four Lane Ends, Oxspring, making no attempt to stop or brake. Analysis of the car afterwards estimated that Scott was travelling at around 92mph when the car hit the wall, with the brakes only being applied after the collision.

The children, most of who were not wearing seat belts, were rescued from the car as quickly as possible by officers and staff from both the ambulance and fire service. However, it soon became apparent that the horrific injuries they had sustained, were not consistent with a collision, as Detective Chief Inspector David Stopford explains: “The scene, when officers first attended, was so horrific that they were astounded to find the children were alive. “A blood-stained hammer was found in the car as officers were rescuing the children and it soon became clear that the injuries they had suffered, were consistent with this rather than the collision. “The children were all left with serious head injuries, some of which included numerous skull fractures and bleeding to the brain. Medical experts said that their injuries were consistent with being hit with a blunt object – most likely the hammer found in the car.” Scott had travelled from Hampshire with the children overnight, with his reasons for coming to Barnsley still unknown. He was

arrested at the scene for driving offences, but later those charges were upgraded to four counts of attempted murder following the discovery of the hammer and the extent of the injuries. DCI Stopford said: “This has been without doubt, one of the most harrowing cases I’ve worked on, the ordeal those young children were subjected to was utterly horrendous and I’m pleased that Scott has today been jailed for a significant length of time. “Three of the four children are now recovering at home with their family. One of the children, a seven-year-old girl, is still receiving treatment in hospital today but we are hopeful she will soon be able to be at home with her family and her siblings. “I’d like to praise and thank the efforts of everyone who attended the scene that day and who has worked on the case. In particular, I’d also like to thank the medical staff at Sheffield Children’s Hospital and staff at Leeds General Infirmary for the care and treatment they provided and who were very helpful with providing early evidence to us.”

ARCTIC MONKEYS RUMOURED TO PLAY FOUR HOMECOMING GIGS IN HILLSBOROUGH HIGH Green rockers Arctic Monkeys are being rumoured to be playing a string of homecoming shows at Hillsborough Park in September. The former Stocksbridge High School pupils are expected to

reveal details of their sixth album soon and have confirmed gigs around the world, although their only UK date confirmed so far is headlining Glasgow’s TRNSMT Festival. But rumours of homecoming shows have

SECTION OF MANCHESTER ROAD FACES WEEKS OF FULL CLOSURE YORKSHIRE Water have revealed that Manchester Road between Wharncliffe Side and Deepcar could be fully closed for a number of weeks, with further disruption to follow with one-way traffic light systems. Yorkshire Water’s plans to relocate its existing waste water treatment works in Deepcar to make way for 413 new homes to be built close by will go on show to the public on February 26. Representatives from Yorkshire Water, Bloor Homes and Sheffield Council will be available between the hours of 3pm and 7pm at The Venue in Stocksbridge. The new treatment works will be located one mile further south of the current one. The plans are part of a much wider strategy, facilitated by Sheffield Council which includes the new 413 home development in Deepcar by Bloor Homes on the former brickworks site. The site has been derelict for many years and is now to be fully reclaimed with public greenspace along the river and the construction of a new road and bridge from Manchester Road. At the event, people will be see the proposals from both Yorkshire Water and Bloor Homes and meet members of the project teams. In addition, representatives from Sheffield Council Highways and

started after notices appeared in Hillsborough Park, stating that SJM Concerts are planning an event this September, providing live music and the sale of alcohol for up to four days.

Stocksbridge Town Council will also be in attendance. Visitors will also have the opportunity to record their views on how best to minimise disruption during the construction.

In addition to the new treatment works, a new sewer needs to be laid along Manchester Road. It’s expected that this work will start mid-March and will require significant traffic management along Manchester Road to allow the work to proceed safely. Bloor Homes also have works in Manchester Road to create an access into the new housing development. Residents in the local areas have been written to and further communications will be issued following the event for those who are unable to attend.

y r a u r b e F h t 5 2 y a d n u Ends This S

Yorkshire Water spokesperson, John Bond said: “Over the last few months, we’ve liaised closely with Bloor Homes and Sheffield Council’s highways department to understand how we can all work together to carry out this essential work, whilst minimising disruption to local residents and businesses in the area. “However, it’s inevitable that two-way traffic lights will be required and it’s expected that a full closure will be needed for a number of weeks to allow our contract partners to work safely.

Volunteers needed to bash bracken on heathland reserve LOCAL volunteers are invited to join a joint working party from Sheffield University Conservation Volunteers and Wharncliffe Heathlands Trust to bash some bracken on Sunday March 3. Bracken needs bashing to prevent it invading important woodland pasture habitats on Wharncliffe Heathlands Nature Reserve. The task will involve cutting and raking bracken on the reserve.

The reserve is grazed by a small flock of Shetland Sheep and two cows but every so often human help is needed to prevent bracken creeping into the woodland and heather. Bracken is not palatable to the animals and eventually shades out other plant species that attract wildlife to the reserve. People wanting to join in will benefit from some good aerobic exercise and should meet at

11am at the River Don bridge on Station Road, Deepcar. Wear stout footwear and bring warm clothes and some lunch. The work party will finish by about 4pm. For more information contact Pete on 07903 341065 or Dave on 07515 106966 or visit http:// www.wharncliffeheathlandstrust.org.uk

MOCK THE WEEK STAR COMES TO STOCKSBRIDGE COMEDY returns to The Venue, Stocksbridge, on Saturday March 10 with another TVendorsed line-up, headlined by Gary Delaney. Described as “the undisputed master of the one-liner genre” by The Guardian, Gary has starred on Mock The Week, Live At The Apollo, Dave’s One Night Stand, Celebrity Mastermind, Celebrity Eggheads, Celebrity Pointless and Radio Five's Seven Day Sunday. He received numerous four and five star reviews for his debut Edinburgh Festival show, ‘Purist’, and he has won two Sony

Awards for his writing work for Kerrang Radio. Perceptively described by bbc. co.uk as “the comedian Jimmy Carr wants to be” Gary is a majestic one-liner based wit whose inordinately tightly written, wonderfully original material make him one of the most quoted comedians on the planet. He will be previewing material from his forthcoming Edinburgh Festival show. Chief support is local lad Pete Selwood, an inspired storyteller and Comedy Cellar award winner.

of Billy Lowther. The night is compered by Metro Award winner Anthony J. Brown, who also promotes the event. 'To get an act of the calibre of Gary to The Venue is a real coup. He's a theatre touring act in his own right with a slew of television credits. If you're a fan of top drawer humour, there's only one place to be that night! Abolish the parish council Reply to Anthony Toon’s letter of February 15. I understand Mr Toon’s frustration and believe a democratic process exists to abolish a parish council. Although I’ve not researched it. Personally I’ve not reached the point where I would support ending Ecclesfield Parish Council (EPC) but I despair at times how an organisation that could do great and positive work for all within the EPC spends so much of its time on building a palace to sit in that palace to decide what next to spend on that palace. About two thirds of the EPC income is spent on running the EPC. Please bare in mind EPC councillors are not paid and apart from the chairpersons modest allowance none of us receive any expenses. To my mind the problem we have in the EPC is the communities that could benefit the most have the least amount of confidence in the EPC, this translates into not voting. While those communities that need the possible benefits of this council the least dominate the ranks within the council, because those communities turn out in far higher numbers to vote. This vote is chased by the two parties that have dominated the EPC my entire life.

In practice this means we have a council that will have more enthusiasm for spending your tax pound on putting a flower pot outside the council offices, than setting up a committee to consider ways of reducing or preventing crime and antisocial behaviour.

If the Parish Council is so important and effective, why has it not been copied throughout Sheffield? It truly amazes me how they manage to conduct any business at all considering the amount of sniping and backstabbing they sling at each other on these pages.

clean, fresh water to drink or take my tablets with.

I was straight on the phone, Yorkshire Water apologised - there was a burst main in the area and I was told “they are working on it. An hour past, two hours and three hours. Still no water. To be honest, yes, I was mad. I had no water so I read up about compensation and how to get bottled water from them. Frustration set in. Followed by a loud gurgling noise from the cold water system filling up the WC, I went to the taps... about time! I was almost on the edge of insanity. I calmed myself and got my usual large glass of Yorkshire water and sat sipping it, heart content. But then I stopped and thought about that team of men called out to do repairs, all hours God sends in wind, rain, sleet and snow. It made me so thankful that I telephoned Yorkshire Water. As the lady on the other end answered I said I just want to say a big thanks to you all, to those men who repaired the burst main and to all those who took part in getting it sorted. Sometimes we take things for granted but it makes the heart sing to give and receive words of thanks. Mrs Cindy Law, Deepcar

Positive results for both War Memorial sides BOTH Oughtibridge War Memorial Ladies and Peterborough NS Ladies maintained their unbeaten records in a hard fought 0-0 encounter at the War Memorial. Defences were well on top and it’s pretty clear that the title race is going to the wire in the East Midlands Premier League title with four teams in contention. This exhilarating dual slalom race – similar to skiing – sees riders battle head to head down a purpose-built course on Howard Street in Sheffield city centre. It brings Sheffield’s thriving mountain biking scene out of the woods and into the heart of the city.

Church’s streak comes to an end at Barton Town

It is one of four headline events at The Outdoor City Weekender, an action-packed adventure festival taking place at locations across Sheffield from March 9 to 11.

PENISTONE Church’s incredible unbeaten run finally came to an end at the weekend as they lost 3-0 away to Barton Town in the Toolstation NCEL Premier Division.

The event is being held later in the day than last year – from around 4pm to 7pm – making the final rounds even more dramatic as darkness falls and the course is lit up. Entry to the competition is by invitation only, with around 64 men and women taking to the track on the day. Alongside Steve Peat (aka Sheffield Steel) and 50:01’s Craig Evans, the racing line-up includes last year’s winners Brett Penfold, Ben Moore, Carrie Poole and Anya Tolwinska. Sam Dale, national 4X champion, and Joe Wallbridge are also ones to watch.

“In dual you go head to head, so you have another person next to you who you are trying to compete with or not get taken out by. As for where I would rank myself, not very highly! I’ll be the one trying too hard and crashing! “Watch out for the slippy carnage corner, I think that could be where it’s won or lost.” For more information on the Weekender, visit the website at www.theoutdoorcity.co.uk/outdoorcity-weekender

Tom Wardby hit a brace for the home side and Will Wardby added a third, with all the goals coming after the break. After the game Manager Ian Richards reflected, “All unbeaten runs have to come to an end and it’s been an exceptional run from the players from mid-October to mid-February and we need to be pleased and proud over the progression we made over that time, but it’s just disappointing the way we did relinquish that unbeaten run. “We were second best today, I can’t take anything away from Barton they were the better team and they restricted us to limited chances and they scored three goals that on another day we would have prevented but today we were unable to.”

Lumsden at the double as Steels beat Market Drayton TWO first half goals from striker Joe Lumsden helped Stocksbridge Park Steels secure a deserved 2-0 away win at Market Drayton. Their next game sees them face Corby Town at home on Saturday February 24, with a 3pm kick off. The first few weeks of the trial have been a roaring success says David Bradley who is the commentator at this moment in time. David added that the club are currently using iampundit app which is downloadable on both Android and Apple operating systems. It’s simplicity of just using An iPad, headphones, microphone and some internet data has made it affordable for the club.

David said: “It now means we can reach a larger audience across the town. We much prefer it if people turned up at Bracken Moor and added to the atmosphere and help with the financial side of the club, but we know it’s not always possible to follow the team at home or away. So this our way of keeping people connected with the local club. “We are still in with chance of getting in the playoffs again, we need the support, and we will keep you in touch with the club home and away. Although David is currently doing the commentary, the club is looking for someone who can do this on regular basis. This would be perfect for someone looking to get into sports commentating and journalism. If you would like to do this please contact David via email at davidmbradley1@talktalk.net
