Registration Information

Registration for programs and/or services is important as we strive to provide quality programming. Registration helps us determine the number of participants to prepare for. Registration is on a firstcome first-served basis and, at times programs fill up, so register early. Programs/Events that have a fee attached to them require payment at the time of registration. Payment can be made by cash, debit or credit card (during normal business hours).

Cancellation Policy If we cancel

Full refunds are issued when the MFRC/ PSP cancels a program. Every effort is made to cancel courses in a timely manner (3-7 days prior to start date).

MFRC programs: Full refunds will be processed by contacting the MFRC at 250-3632640 a minimum of 3 days prior to the program start date.

PSP programs: Full refunds will be processed by contacting PSP at 250-363-1009 a minimum of 7 days prior to the program start date (camps require two weeks’ notice prior to the first day of camp). Please note cancellations after the required dates will be subject to approval and subject to an administrative fee.

In the event of a medical/emergency circumstance prorated refunds may be granted for programs with multiple sessions (ie; workshop series).

MFRC programs: If paid by credit card, the money is refunded back to your card.

If paid with a debit card at the Signal Hill location, the amount can be refunded back to your debit card. If paid by cash or debit card at the CPAC location, a cheque will be issued. Please allow 2 weeks for processing.

PSP programs: Payments made by credit card or debit will be refunded to your card.

omen tend to spend a lot of time caring for others.

It can get pretty exhausting, which is why the phrase “me time” comes up so much.

“Me time” is by definition taking time away from your responsibilities to take care of yourself, and Pacific Women’s Day is a great way to do just that.

Warrant Officer April Levigne has gone to Pacific Women’s Day six times now, and she looks forward to going each and every year because it’s a great chance for her to relax and reboot so she can help others. “It’s a lot of fun,

and a good time for you to look after you,” said Levigne.

“If you don’t look after yourself first, then you can’t look after others. ” It’s also a great way to meet new people and catch up with old friends. “It’s a fantastic opportunity to meet other women in the military community,” said Ekaterina Gregory, lead organizer of Pacific Women’s Day. “Sometimes we feel isolated, and this is a great way to meet new friends, relax and reenergize. ” While Gregory always tries to bring in different workshops and speakers there are a few sessions she knows will

always be loved, like wine tasting and massage. So she brings them back year after year. If you want to get into one of those sessions, you need to sign up as soon as possible, because they always fill up fast.

Gregory is also bringing back the marketplace. So, while Pacific Women’s Day is a day just for you to spoil and pamper yourself, you can also browse the market and find the perfect gift to give to someone special in the upcoming holiday season.

Some other previous workshops include belly dancing, zentangle, knitting, garden-

ing tips and tours, and sushi making. There are also educational sessions, which means you can take a workshop and learn how to give speeches and improve your presentation skills, communicate compassionately, or practice mindfulness.

This year Pacific Women’s Day will be on Saturday November 25 at Royal Roads University. Make sure you register for it so you can spend time with friends, maybe win a prize or two, and get some valuable me time.

Formation Fun Day The fun-filled free event is the best deal in town. The family-oriented festival is held at the Naden location of CFB Esquimalt, and is open to the entire Defence Team. Inside the drill shed you’ll find dozens of Market Place vendors at the ready to sell their unique wares, free ice cream, bouncy castles and much more. Birthday Parties BOOK your party with PSP Recreation Book your child/youth’s next Birthday Party with PSP Recreation. We offer a number of theme parties to choose from. Most of our Parties take place on Saturday or Sunday; however, there are a few themed parties with flexibility (such as our Dodge in the Dark Party). Party Theme by You Have a great theme idea for your child’s party? Are you the type that likes to organize it all? This is a parent-facilitated birthday party in which you provide the theme, organize the games, and bring the food, the decorations and the cake. Have fun with music! This is one of our most popular programs, very lively and will be very enjoyable for you and your child. Through a partnership with Victoria Conservatory of Music, you and your child will listen to an Early Childhood Music Educator and have a chance to make your own music with a variety of instruments. (Activity Program for Parents and Infants) This six week program, created by Invest in Kids, offers great handson experiences for parents and their infants (birth to 18 months). You will learn new songs, activities and crafts you can do with your infant.

EARLY YEARS Preschool The MFRC’s ECE certified Educators provide fun and creative opportunities for your child! Parent participation is required for field trips.

Classes are available at the Colwood Pacific Activity Centre. Some spaces may still be available. Please call to inquire about our 2 or 3 day a week classes that can help your child to learn through play. All classes have a maximum of 10 students.

Deployment Respite Child Care Free respite child care is available for one continuous 3 hour session per week up to a maximum of 4 free sessions per month when a military parent is deployed (or away for work-related reasons) for 21 consecutive days or more. Located in Belmont Park in Colwood, the MFRC provides Before and After School Care for children from Kindergarten to Grade 6. Dropoff and pick-up is available at École John Stubbs Elementary School.

Military Family ID Card It takes just 10 minutes to get this valuable ID card. The card is available to all regular and reserve military family members age 13 years and up. Use it to access base services such as the Naden Athletic Centre and to receive discounts from local businesses. The CAF member must be present to sign the card at the time of issue. If your partner is deployed or on course, contact the MFRC to make special arrangements. The MFID is available at Signal Hill MFRC and CPAC MFRC.

Peter Mallett, Staff Writer The Military Family Resource Centre (MFRC) is making baby boxes available to new and expecting military parents, free-of-charge, beginning May 29, 2017.

Designed for infants under the age of six months, the baby boxes contain a custom-made mattress that can be used with the box as a bassinet, a onesie, diapers, wipes, nursing pads, baby lotion, plus an assortment of discount coupons.

“This latest program we are offering is another great way the MFRC is connecting and supporting military families with new children,” said Scott Branch, MFRC Children’s Service Coordinator. “The boxes are essentially a starter kit for new parents. ” MFRC staff have also added reading materials on breastfeeding, raising a military child and information on family care support programs available in the community.

The baby boxes are inspired by an initiative that began over 75 years ago by the government of Finland and their efforts to address alarming infant mortality rates. The self-contained boxes distributed to mothers served as a care package and also as a bassinet, and in the end helped greatly contribute to a downward trend in the infant mortality rate.

The boxes meet Health Canada Standards and are manufactured by the Baby Box Co. They normally retail for approximately $150. Branch said there are currently 60 baby boxes in stock and the company will supply more as needed.

To obtain a baby box, military families must first register for the program through a link on the MFRC website at www.esquimaltmfrc.com/welcoming-baby-box/. It is recommended that families pick up their box in advance of their due date or in the first three months after the birth of the child.

ADULT SOCIAL AND MENTAL WELLNESS Social and Mental Wellness Resources and Services Bounce Backâ&#x201E;˘ Canadian Mental Health Association An evidence-based program led by the Canadian Mental Health Associationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s BC Division is designed to help adults experiencing symptoms of mild to moderate depression, low mood, or stress, with or without anxiety and proven to work. Funded by the Provincial Health Services Authority, Bounce Back has two interventions: a) Living Life to the Full DVD â&#x20AC;&#x201C; This free DVD provides participants with practical tips on how to recognize and deal with symptoms of depression. b) Telephone coaching and workbooks â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Bounce Backâ&#x201E;˘ provides guided self-help where a community â&#x20AC;&#x153;coachâ&#x20AC;? assists in the teaching of problem solving and other skills to overcome difficulties such as inactivity, unhelpful thinking, worry and avoidance. The course assists leaders in promoting an addiction free culture in their workplace. Participants learn about substance misuse, warning signs, effective interviewing skills, active listening skills, enabling, and how to challenge and change unhealthy workplace cultures.

Q&A with Jackie CarlĂŠ With the retirement of MFRC executive director Gaynor Jackson in June, Jackie CarlĂŠ took over as interim executive director. We caught up her to talk about the transition and the way ahead.

What experience do you bring to the role of executive director?

I have spent the past 23 years working for military families in a variety of roles.

Sometimes that has meant working at individual Military Family Resource Centres and sometimes at the national level with Military Family Services. I have had experience working with non-proďŹ ts and with board of directors. In the past year, I have also had the opportunity to be acting executive director here in Esquimalt during a few leave of absences.

How long have you been with the Esquimalt MFRC? While with Military Family Services, I was the ďŹ eld operations manager. It took me to every MFRC and I knew that this MFRC was one that I could align with. Four years ago, I did a short-term project to review the MFRCâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s core services and to help create an outcomes-based evaluation process for our services. I ofďŹ cially joined the MFRC

as community engagement manager in April of 2014.

What is it like to replace someone that has been in the position for close to 20 years?

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a privilege to come into an organization that has had such longevity in leadership and staff as well. I have known Gaynor professionally for the past 12 years. I think we complemented each other really well and made a good team. I worked closely with her the past three years. Filling in for her a couple of times in the past year has helped with the transition. It creates security and a secure vision ahead. I know the system and understand Military Family Services really well. It helps to have that context in this time of change.

What has it been like so far?

It is business as usual here at the MFRC. We have really talented, professional staff.

We are very engaged with our work. It is a high operational tempo and work is continuing at that same high level.

What is the plan with the Executive Director position?

I was hired as interim executive director for six months with the possibility of an extension. The timing

of the hiring process will be contingent on the governance review.

How does the governance review impact the search for a new executive director?

Our parent organization, Military Family Services, are doing a governance review for all Military Family Resource Centres. Right now, they are trying to determine if it is still appropriate to continue with the not-for-proďŹ t structure or if there are alternate governance models that work better in the future. The thought at our MFRC was that it was unfair to bring someone new to a system that is evolving. A change in governance is a big deal and it is unfair for a new executive director to start a job before those details are ďŹ gured out.

What is the process going forward?

From September 21st to the 25th, two board members and executive directors from each MFRC will meet in Toronto.

Five governance models will be discussed. The attendees will vote to determine the top two options. At some point over the following months, the Chief of Defence Staff will decide on one of those two options. By the end of September, we will know

the lay of the land and can hire with that information in mind.

What if you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have enough information to make a decision at that time?

If that is the case, there is an option to extend my contract and conduct the hiring process at a later date.

When it comes to hiring, what are the next steps?

At the Esquimalt MFRC, we have a very strong board of directors. This is an opportunity for us to stop and think in case this review takes MFRCs in a new direction.

Throughout the process, there will be a transition committee that includes Leanne Kopp (former board chair at the Esquimalt MFRC and current executive director of The Prostate Centre), Denise Lloyd (from Engaged HR) and four current board members. The position will be posted and there will be a robust hiring process to see who is out there and who is interested in this position.

This hands-on interactive first-aid and CPR training course includes adult CPR, child CPR, infant CPR, two person CPR (Level C). Students will learn how to clear an airway on a conscious choking person. Recognition and first aid for shock, spinal injuries, heart attack, angina, stroke, bleeding, broken bones, seizures, heat related illness, hypothermia, allergic reactions, poisons and burns. Students will learn and be certified on how to use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). Other topics include how to use a first-aid kit and what goes into a first-aid kit, dealing with small wounds, recognition and prevention of infection, how to use a CPR mask and how to protect yourself at the scene of an accident, what to do at an accident if you do not have gloves and a CPR mask, how to assess the history of an accident, when to and how to call 911 or just go to the hospital.

This first-aid course is recognized by the Adult and Child Licensing Care Board. Canadian Red Cross first-aid and CPR certification is valid for 3 years. Aquarius Dive Club offers children as young as 5 years old their 1st breath on SCUBA with the Supplied Air Snorkelling for Youth (SASY) Program. In the SASY program, children 5-8yrs old wear a Buoyancy Compensator Device (BCD) and SCUBA equipment, but they stay on the surface, and experience breathing from a regulator while floating.

The BCD is like a life preserver, and it holds a real scuba tank with a functioning regulator and air gauge. However, the BCD is not weighted, so the child remains positively buoyant at the surface of the pool.

7 often missed baby-proofing tips (BPT) - Most parents, or soon-to-be parents, are often aware of the obvious baby proofing checklist items: baby gates, electrical outlet covers, cabinet locks, sharp furniture corners, etc.

However, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), there are a surprising number of “hidden” hazards around the home. These hazards, such as window cords, hide in plain sight and should be on everyone’s list of items to baby proof.

Corded window coverings are a strangulation hazard as infants and young children can accidentally become entangled in the cords. The window covering industry and consumer safety advocates all agree that only cordless window coverings or those with inaccessible cords should be used in homes

with young children.

There are many cordless window covering options offered today.

Magnets. Small powerful magnets, if swallowed, can attract inside the body and block, twist or tear the intestines. Be sure to take note of what is in a child’s play environment that may pose a risk. If you think your child

has swallowed a magnet, seek medical attention immediately.

Recalled products. Be aware of the latest safety recalls and get dangerous products out of the home.

Furniture tip-overs. Children will pull and climb on top-heavy furniture, TVs and cabinets, which can easily tip over, causing a serious

accident. Install anchors and brackets to all pieces of furniture with a tip-over risk. Read more information on the CPSC’s “Anchor it!” website.

Pools and drains. A child can be trapped underwater from the suction of a pool or spa drain. Parents should inspect pools and spas for missing or broken drain covers.

Older child’s toys. If this is your second child, be certain to keep the older siblings toys in a separate area from the baby, in order to prevent them from possibly choking on small pieces.

Button batteries. A child can swallow a button battery and suffer chemical burns in as little as two hours. Leave all devices with accessible button batteries - watches, remote controls, toys, keyless remote controls, etc. - out of the reach of children.

It’s never too early to teach

compassion AND empathy (BPT) - The news is filled with articles about the opinions and attitudes of the millennial generation and now, Generation Z. But what about the youngest generation - youths 4-9 years old?

These children are growing up in a time of unprecedented access to information, when civility, kindness and compassion have taken a back seat to bullying and violence.

Experts say it is more important now than ever for parents to seek learning moments in which children can experience compassion and empathy.

The Jensen Project is a program designed to foster compassion, inspiration and courage in young people as a path to avoiding the bullying and sexual harassment prevalent on college campuses.

The program examines the attitudes and opinions of young people with the goal of inspiring a gentler, kinder, more empathetic dimension in their lives.

Janet Jensen, founder of The Jensen Project, says,

“Children are at their most vulnerable when they are forming their social skills.

They are a reflection of what they see and hear around them. Parents, educators and media influencers need to take extra care to teach compassion and courage at an early age.”

Recent research conducted

by YouthBeat and commissioned by The Jensen Project, asked youths ages 4-9 if they thought the world would be a better place when they grow up. Forty-one percent said yes, while 38 percent felt the world would be the same or worse.

In an alarming statement about what stresses them the most, death and bullying each rose to the top third of concerns after family and school issues.

Experts agree bullying is becoming a critical issue at a younger age, and must be addressed proactively if future generations will be able to reduce the incidents of harassment and sexual abuse in colleges and beyond.

Block Parent Program looking for volunteers LS Andrea Noye, Community Relations MPU Esquimalt Military Police Unit Esquimalt is looking for residents in the three Residential Housing Unit (RHU) areas - Belmont Park/Royal Roads, Work Point, and Rocky Point â&#x20AC;&#x201C; to join the Block Parent Program.

A Block Parent is an adult wanting to care for the wellbeing of children and others in the community by offering a safe refuge if the need arises. Block Parents have no legal status, except their natural status as private citizens of the community.

The Block Parent Program is essential and provides our community with an orga-

nized method of protecting our communityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s children, and aiding in the prompt reporting of all emergency situations to the Military Police.

Remember for all emergencies, dial 911.

To become a Block Parent you must be a responsible citizen, aged 18 years and over who cares about the wellbeing of individuals, especially children, has been screened by the Military Police Unit, and is willing to provide help whenever the Block Parent sign is displayed in your home.

Block Parents assist persons in distress by phoning the

emergency 911, and provide a safe place for a child in need.

A Block Parent does not always need to have the sign up when at home. If a Block Parent feels like removing the sign then one may do so at any time.

All new Block Parents receive instructions on proper procedures. It is essential to the Block Parent Program that the community has maximum involvement and is endorsed and supported by the Military Police Unit.

Formation Teams (CFB Esquimalt Tritons)

Esquimalt Formation Sports organizes sports teams, leagues, and tournaments from the Formation/Base level to international competition. The programs offered are: • Cock of the Walk/Formation (Unit Competition) • Formation Teams (Pacific Regional and CAF National Championships) • CISM (International Sports)

Esquimalt Formation Sports teams are comprised of Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) members that are Regular Force or Class A, B or C Reserve Force and belong to CFB Esquimalt in full capacity or are Attached Posted here. The Tritons represent CFB Esquimalt at Pacific Regional Championships for various sports, and if they win at the Regional Championship move on to represent the Pacific Region at the National Championships. Full time DND or NPF civilian personnel may coach, manage, or officiate a sport with appropriate documentation.

Quick and Dirty! The Quick & Dirty is perfect if youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re a person on the go! Join PSP staff for a Quick and Dirty 30 minute workout at the NAC every Monday from 1205-1250. This high intensity style work out will focus on interval training hitting major muscle groups and quick bouts of cardio. Are you ready for the Quick & Dirty?

Formation Unit PT: This class is designed as a drop in class for all interested members and units in the Formation. Check out the current schedule posted under Unit PT on the PSP website.

Sore and Restore: Come and explore varied stretching techniques, focusing on increasing full body strength and flexibility. A 45 minute class focusing on restoring those sore muscles back to their happy healthy selves.

CLUBS Aquarius Dive Club No pagers, no phones, no boss! At 90 feet it’s a different kind of pressure.

After 25 years, Aquarius has grown to become the largest active dive club in the Canadian Forces. With the Aquarius Dive Club divers can take advantage of all the premiere dive sites Vancouver Island has to offer.

We offer Entry level “Basic Open Water” courses as well as “Advanced Open Water” specialties including: Dry Suit, Deep, Night, Wreck, Enriched Air / Nitrox, Photography, Rescue and Dive Master. All courses are affordably priced and include classroom time, equipment, pool dives, ocean dives and boat dives as required.

Unrestricted by geography, you can regularly find Aquarius Dive Club on the Boeing 737 sunk in Chemainus, HMCS Cape Breton and HMCS Saskatchewan in Nanaimo, HMCS Columbia in Campbell River. You will find us on our annual trek up to Telegraph Cove for a fantastic weekend of diving and good times.

You can join us for our overnight camping & dive trips to China Creek, diving the waterfilled missile silo in Washington and diving in other waters further afield. You can also simply enjoy one of our many wonderful local dive sites in the pristine BC waters.

As a club, we’re able to take advantage of special pricing on dive charters gear and dive

This club boasts one of CFB Esquimalt’s largest memberships with over 500 people! This club purchases corporate memberships at local golf courses and provides reduced green fees to its members. Shotokan Karate Club Karate is a striking art using punching, kicking, knee and elbow strikes, and open-handed techniques such as knife-hands. The aim of the Karate Club is to teach traditional Shotokan Karate, and to foster the development of karate through seminars, tournaments, and exposure to world-class karate and other martial arts instructors. Model Railroad Club The model Railway Club started as an N Scale (1/160) NTRAK modular layout in December 1997. Currently the NTRAK layout is 30 plus feet by 40 plus feet. These modules are continuously updated as new techniques and experiences are gained including Digital Command Control (DCC) systems. The N Scale layout is currently completing conversion to DCC but this does not preclude DC locomotives from being run on the layout.

The HO Scale (1/87) modular layout is also 30 plus by 40 plus feet and has completed conversion to DCC. Again this does not preclude DC locomotives from enjoying the wonders of the layout. Some of these modules depict logging operations, mining operations and a

locomotive servicing facility.

Both of these layouts have been on public display and have won multiple awards as “Best Operating Layout”, “Favourite Operating Layout”; and “Best Module” at train shows in Victoria and Nanaimo. Our layout at “Christmas in the Village” is the perennial favourite display at the Saanich Historical Artefacts Society Christmas presentation.

The Club actively participates each year in the Victoria Train Show, Westshore Town Centre Hobby Show, Nanaimo Regional Train Show, Esquimalt Buccaneer Days, MARPAC Expo and the West Coast Welcome.

MARPAC RIDERS / CFB Esquimalt Motorcycle Club The focus of the Club is three-fold: 1. To promote the social aspect of group riding we provide avenues for socializing and participating in group-ride activities, including charity ride events; 2. To assist in you “self-help” repairs we provide limited repair shop facilities and equipment (bike hoist, and fully kitted tool kit), including instructional classes; and, 3. To develop rider skills we provide rider Mentorship training “ride-alongs” with experienced riders that: help members develop group riding skills; help members hone their riding skills in preparation for their motorcycle skills or Class 6 road tests; or, simply enhance their everyday riding skills.
