Relocation Tips for military families

Approximately 15,000 Canadian Forces members move bases each year. Moving means change and the process can be a challenge. With each new location, families need to re-establish medical services. Spouses need to make new friends and find employment. Children will have to start new schools, develop new friendships and find new activities in the local area. If you are relocating this summer here are some tips that may be helpful to your family. Get to know the resources that are available to you Do as much research as possible prior to the move. Find out what benefits you are entitled to from the Integrated Relocation Program. Develop an action plan Make a list of all the things that need to be done prior, during and after the move. Once you have made the list decide when each task needs to be done. There are a lot

of things that need to be done as part of a move so spread out the tasks into manageable chunks. Gather information about the key relocation topics Gather detailed information about the key relocation topics that are pertinent to you. These topics include medical care, housing, education, child care, and employment. Make the move a family affair Talk about the move openly with your family. Express any concerns you may have and discuss some of the positive things about the move. Take a team approach and have everyone participate in the tasks. For example kids may wantt to pack a box of their favourite toys. Take time for yourself Finally it is very important to take care of yourself during this busy time. Schedule in some fun things to do

with friends or family. Moving to a new base can be a stressful time but it can also be a very exciting time. This is an opportunity for your family to see new things, try new activities and meet new people. Preparation is the key to a smooth move and it will allow your family to enjoy the positive aspects of the move. Need more help with relocation? Visit www.familynavigator.ca to access an interactive e-tool called Navigating Your Move, under the “Moving? tab.

Did you know... Kids need 1 hour of activity EVERY SINGLE DAY. No exceptions. It’s especially critical for kids under 10 get an hour because if they don’t develop the pattern of an active lifestyle by age 10, they are far more likely to be obese and inactive as adults which results in a whole host of health problems including diabetes, heart disease, mental health problems and others.

Maritime Museum revitalizes naval exhibit Chelsea Falconer NPA Office The Maritime Museum of British Columbia is in the process of making significant revisions to its naval gallery. The gallery is being revitalized to “celebrate the story of the Royal Canadian Navy,” said Anissa Paulsen, the museum’s director of exhibits and engagement. “The Naval Role in the Development of British Columbia is the working title for the new gallery space, which will look at how the Royal Navy and the Royal Canadian Navy have both influenced the development and identity of British Columbia throughout history and today. During this project, the museum will be exploring ways to portray the experiences of current navy families within the context of Canadian naval history. Re-development will occur in three stages, with the first stage focusing on the early history and significance of the

Esquimalt Graving Dock. The second stage will feature the first Canadian naval vessel - HMCS Rainbow – as part of a tribute to the anniversary of First World War. Part of the re-development plan is to include a more user-friendly approach to showcase local history so that children and adults will be able to engage with the exhibit. As a result, the third stage will likely include a “life at sea” section where visitors will be able to better imagine life on board a navy vessel by experiencing; for example, a crew members’ tight living quarters. The first stage of the gallery renewal is currently underway with plans to finish in June 2014. This stage will highlight the importance of the Esquimalt Graving Dock in the development of not only Esquimalt but also the City of Victoria. “Our historic interactions with the water are critical to our identity as British Columbians today,” Paulsen said. “Esquimalt developed around the dockpart of yyard and the graving g g dock was huge g p

that development.” The plan to update the naval exhibit began last year when the Naval Officers Association Foundation donated $5,000 to the museum for this project. Paulsen has been connecting with the local naval community at CFB Esquimalt in order to establish a modern context for the exhibit. Retired Commodore Jan Drent, a long-time supporter and volunteer at the museum, is advising Paulsen on naval aspects of the exhibit. The museum is keen to embrace the local military community and will be hosting a “Navy Night” to welcome navy families to the opening of the revitalized exhibit after stage two is completed later this summer. The Maritime Museum – with a staff of seven - relies mainly on volunteers for exhibit renewals and they are hoping to find more people to contribute to this project. Interested parties can visit the website (www.mmbc.ca) for more information on volunteering.

Think twice before you post on social media Navy Public Affairs Office Do you post pictures of your vacation on Facebook, or post that you are heading out of town? Do you tweet about your terrible boss and the people you have to work with? You may want to think twice about the information you are sharing with the public through social media. Approximately 60 per cent of Canadians use social media networking and one in three use social media every day, according to statistics from the Vice Chief of Defence Staff. This increase in our online communication raises concerns around safety, privacy and workplace ethics. Research shows that home break-ins often occur as a result of postings on social media. Richard Wright, PhD, a professor of criminology and criminal justice at the University of Missouri and author of Burglars on the Job: Streetlife and Residential Break-Ins, explains that “the number one thing that puts you at risk of a break-in is over sharing the details of your life.”

Posting online that you are going on vacation this upcoming Spring Break, could be the equivalent of hanging a sign free stuff in front of your house saying – “free n inside – come in and take get it”.

Facebook, Twitter, and GPS-enabled cell phones have created more ways to share sensitive information to a much larger group of people. In letting your “friends” know where are you are, you are also letting them know where are you are not. Applications such as Instagram and Foursquare allow users to cross-post to Facebook and Twitter, so your location can be disclosed to many in a very short period of time; making a burglar’s job much simpler. Last November, the Taylor family from Kamloops, B.C., posted online about their weekend trip to Vancouver to see a Canucks game. When the family returned home, they found that thieves had stolen their car and driven off with $20,000 worth of their belongings. As a result of increased social media usage, the line between personal and professional lives is becoming more blurry, and the impact it has is of greater consequence. You may want to ask yourself before you post online – what are the implications of doing so, in both your personal and professional life?

Kara Tibbel, Contributor

Stacey Kaminski left and Tracey Jones right, interior stylists & stagers.

Spruce up your home before you sell By Kara Tibbel One drawback to military life can be moving from one destination to the next in a short time frame. This can add stress for military members and their families. It can also mean a need to sell a home quickly. If you are putting a “for sale” sign on your Victoria home, you may benefit from what Tracey Jones and Stacey Kaminski have to offer. The duo are interior stylists and home stagers with more than six years experience creating attractive spaces like those seen on HGTV shows. Styling and staging, while similar, serve different purposes. Real estate staging is the best asset for a military family to sell their home rapidly, while interior styling makes a temporary living arrangement, such as a Residential Housing Unit, feel comfortable and homey. “It’s not necessarily about buying new things; people own lots of amazing stuff but don’t know how to use it. Paint, throw

pillows, greenery, vases, etcetera, we take what you have and either redesign it or add to it, to give the space the style it needs,” says Jones. “Anything is possible with just a little creativity,” Kaminski adds. Two options exist to create a space that will entice buyers to make an offer, says Jones. You can use your own furniture, or they can rent furniture for you from a local membership based company, such as HOUSSE, to stage the space. The two interior stylists are overflowing with tips on how to redesign and style. The key is to keep it light. Packing every corner with odds and ends makes a room feel small and uncomfortable. Use or create storage with baskets, shelving and organizing drawers to hide your stuff. Curtain walls if there is an awkward placed window or area; it adds a new dimension to the room. Want to punch up a room? Add art and colour. Want a room to seem larger? Hang mirrors.

52 • CFB Esquimalt / MARPAC Activity Guide

Want to keep up with what’s in style? Something raw, organic or distressed is very in right now; adding these elements will make your home feel real and not like a museum piece. “I never would have thought of that.’ We hear this endlessly, but it is true,” says Kaminski. Jones and Kaminski share the same passion for interior styling and re-designing. For them, creating a room for people to enjoy is art. But the most rewarding part of their day-to-day job is the gratitude they get. “It makes us feel so good when we’ve been a part of giving someone a home and not just someplace for them to live,” says Jones. If you are interested in Tracey Jones’ and Stacey Kaminski’s expertise, email them at remarkableredesign @gmail.com or interior stylesbystacey@ gmail.com Be sure to check out Lookout Newspaper’s Pinterest site for more DIY ideas on how to spice up your home.

Model Railroad Club The Model Railroad Club started as an N Scale (1/160) NTRAK modular layout in December 1997. Currently the NTRAK layout is 30 feet by 36 feet. These modules are updated as new techniques and experiences are gained including Digital Command Control systems. The HO Scale (1/87) modular layout is also 30 feet by 36 feet featuring both Digital Command Control and Direct Current Control systems. Some modules depict a logging operation, mining operation and a locomotive servicing facility. Both of these layouts have been on public display and have won multiple awards as “Best Operating Layout”, “Favourite Operating Layout”, and “Best Module” at train shows in Victoria and Nanaimo. Kids& Crafts Canadian Forces Recreation Loisirs des Forces canadiennes Children of all ages love to do arts and crafts, but these activities can involve materials or tools that may be hazardous to children if not used properly. The following are a few safety tips that will help make a safer environment for your children to be creative. • Ensure active supervision at all times. Choose safe materials that are age appropriate. • Read the labels and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for safe use. • Ensure that children wear any protective equipment that is required, such as gloves

or a smock. • Avoid solvents and solvent containing products. • Minimize the volume of a substance that children will have access to by not using materials directly out of the original container. Instead, place a small amount of the substance in a smaller container (such as a yogurt cup or egg carton), but do not store the substance in the smaller container, because it may not be easy to identify later, and will not have any warning information. • Keep arts and crafts supplies out of sight and reach of children when not in use. • Do not eat or drink during art and crafts sessions; food can be easily contaminated

with the art materials. • When painting or drawing, use nontoxic water-based materials designed for children. • When finger painting, use paints labelled specifically for that purpose. • Make sure children wash their hands thoroughly after completing a task. • Make sure to always have the proper ventilation. • Do not expose children to dusts and clay in dry form, such as powdered paint. • Only use modelling clay made for children and do not cast body parts or apply clay directly to the skin apart from the hands.
