hen Lieutenant Commander (Retired) Paul Seguna sits in front of his easel, blank canvas before him, he draws on his 42-year military career as inspiration for his next piece of art. Four decades of service has brought him postings in 14 warships on both coasts, and deployments on Canadian Armed Forces operations in Rwanda, Bosnia and Kosovo. This is why much of his work pays homage to bygone eras of military activity, in peace and in war time, at sea and on land. “If you have an artistic bent and are creative, you apply your life experiences in the art you create,” he says. His artistry comes naturally, with no formal training, just a desire to release that burning idea onto the canvas. A set of pencils and sketchbook have never been far from him, even as a child growing up in Sydney, Australia. “I was continuously drawing everything and anything in my school note books,” he recalls. “It was a form of selfexpression for me back then, and also today. People who have any kind of interest in art or music just seem to gravitate to expressing their creativity; it’s a natural process for me.” His paintings have been showcased in high-profile public art displays includ-

RINGING THE CHANGES IN
Museum Square Clare Sharpe Museum Exhibit Designer
T
his year we began a project to add kisbee rings from the museum’s collection to the exterior of our workshop building in Naden 29. Kisbee rings – which the museum has an extensive collection of – are already a very recognizable feature outside our main exhibit and display buildings in Buildings 37 and 39 at Naden. So it seemed to make sense to extend the rings to show them off in an additional area, and at the same time add to the seamanlike Navy environment in and around the Museum Square. The kisbee ring project meshes very well with a goal of mine to use more open storage at the museum. By open storage, I mean that, instead of storing artifacts in the museum warehouse in the Dockyard, some of these artifacts can, where suitable, become active exhibits as part of our public displays. Open storage is not a new concept, in museum terms. Many museums throughout the world showcase publicly accessible displays of stored collections. In this type of presentation, large numbers of objects are made available in dense, non-thematic displays either out in the open, behind glass, or with the aid of staff. An essential difference between open storage and traditional public exhibits is that public exhibits includes themes and stories and inter-
pretation aids like text panels to tell the visitor about the object and offer ideas about its context. But some objects don’t rely on this kind of interpretation to be meaningful. They may even gain additional meaning by being brought together in one grouping for display. Take ships’ kisbee rings, of which the museum has many fine examples. These rings, like ships’ bells, evoke the vessels they once served. In seeking out kisbee rings from the museum’s warehouse collection, I tried to choose examples which represented ships recently serving in the RCN or which had special significance for members still in the Navy – HMCS PROTECTEUR being a case in point. Another factor was the overall condition of the kisbee rings selected. Not all of the rings in the collection are robust enough to withstand display in an outdoor location. There are substantial overhangs along the verandah of Naden Bldg 29 to provide protection from the elements, and kisbee rings are, by their nature and purpose, built to be sturdy and tolerant of all kinds of weather, fair and foul. But it only made sense to pick the ones in the best overall condition. Here I received strong guidance and assistance from Tatiana Robinson, the museum’s Archival Assistant, who helps to look after, preserve and document the collection. The leadership and personnel at the Sea Training Centre at Naden were
another great source of help with this project. When I asked PO Kevin Hall at the STC for their help to add decorative nautical knotwork to the kisbee rings, he gave a very positive response. The museum supplied the materials for this project but the craftsmanship and hands-on work done by LS Ashely Wirth and LS Preston Pajot made all the difference in improving the appearance of these artifacts and reflecting the pride of the RCN in its customs and long traditions. I understand from both Leading Seamen involved that the ropework for each kisbee ring represents a minimum of 2 weeks’ laborious and detailed work. I would like to thank them and everyone involved for the considerable time and effort expended on this project. We also want to thank LS Francois Bouchard, who is currently working in the museum workshop. It was his idea to make curved brass brackets for mounting the kisbee rings, to replace the previous square metal brackets, which were not attractive. He designed the brackets himself, and hand and machine-made them at the Fleet School, with the kind use of their machinery. The finished product made by LS Bouchard is an impressive way to display the rings in style, and complements their look and proud commemoration of the ships and shore establishments they represent.

et’s be honest for a moment; deployments suck. You or someone you love is gone for days, weeks, or months. Contact between you is spotty at best. Everyone’s emotions are running high. And, no matter how many times it happens, you always feel unprepared when the next one comes around. To help you navigate your next deployment, the Esquimalt MFRC has created an app that will give you tips and checklists to follow whether you are the member who is leaving, or the parent or partner on the home front. The app has everything you need, and, because nobody knows what it’s like to prepare for and live through a deployment like someone going through one, it even has the option for you to share your knowledge and advice with others. Some of the treasures it has are the Countdown Clock (which also tracks sleeps left, garbage days left, and recycling days left—although it doesn’t remind you when they come to pass, so don’t expect your phone to ding and tell you to take out the trash), tons of tips, checklists to make sure you don’t forget to do something leading up to the deployment, and links to other resources that the MFRC has to offer (such as the Deployment Support Book or YouTube videos). Because the creators of the app are aware that deployments are overwhelming enough as it is, they even added in a few features to en-

There's an App for that
sure you’re not overwhelmed by the tips. The tips are divided into four categories: Pre-deployment, During Deployment, Anticipation of Homecoming, and Post Deployment. You can only access the different tips when you’re in different stages of the deployment. For instance, you can only read the tips that will help you during the deployment, once the deployment has already started. However, if you are one of those people who wants to know everything ahead of time, fear not; there is also a sneak-peek button that will show you the tips ahead of time. The checklists are also great. There are a lot of items on them that I personally would not have thought of until it was too late (like getting your member to sign some medical claim forms before they leave so you have them when you need them). The pre-set lists are also customizable, so you can hide items that don’t apply to you, or add new items that are not there. Each checklist changes colour the more filled out it is, and it shows you what the percentage of completion is, so you know at a glance which
CFB ESQUIMALT / MARPAC ACTIVITY GUIDE
ones you still have to work on. While this app is fantastic in so many ways (it’s colourful, it’s easy to use, it’s filled with helpful information, you can tailor it to whether or not you have children, you get awesome badges), it’s not perfect. One of the downsides of it is that you can only track one deployment at a time. On one hand, this makes sense; your member is only going to be going on one deployment at a time, and they cannot be in two places. But, if you are a parent, you might have multiple children in the military who can be gone at the same time. It also isn’t able to cope with back to back deployments, or work-up and trials before the actual deployment. So you can’t program that your partner is going to be gone for two days next week, four days the week after, three days the following week, and then for six weeks straight after that. This means it doesn’t
have advice for coping with those short spans of time when your partner is home, but about to leave again. It also means you can’t schedule your vacation to visit your partner into it. One other thing that’s a little annoying is the app doesn’t send you reminders for anything: the items on your checklist, recycling days, or sleeps left until he or she returns home. So it’s up to you to be on top of the items and actively checking the app for the information you need. All in all, I think that this is a great and super-useful aid for anyone who has a deployment coming up. As with most new things, I believe there is room for it to grow. But if you or your loved one is heading out soon, I’d consider downloading this app onto your phone. That way, all of your checklists are in one place and you don’t have to worry about trying to come up with everything you need to do all on your own.

LEARN is a 12 week program that combines physical activity, nutrition, mental fitness/resilience training, stress management and conscious relaxation to help participants reduce their waist circumference and improve their overall fitness through both education and physical training modules. The program is delivered by the Regional Adaptive Fitness Specialist and Health Promotion Specialists and is endorsed by the MARPAC Health and Wellness Strategy. The target population for this program is members who have an unhealthy waist circumference as defined by the World Health Organization (women over 88 cm and men over 102 cm), poor nutrition habits, and/or an unsuccessful FORCE test. January 29 – April 20, Monday, Wednesday & Fridays from 1:30 – 3:30 pm Course includes ALL sessions.
*Managing Angry Moments (MAM)
MAM helps participants learn how to use anger constructively. It is a course intended for everyone as we all feel anger at various times. Participants gain a better understanding of their relationship with anger. This course is not anger management counselling and is not appropriate for individuals with severe anger management problems. March 1, 8, 15 & 22, 8:30 am – 12noon (course includes all four sessions)

January 22, 8:30 am – 4:00 pm OR April 9, 8:30 am – 4:00 pm
Stress is the #1 workplace disability issue today and appears to be a growing problem. Stress Take Charge is a course for people who want to gain a better understanding of their stress reaction, how to increase their resiliency in stressful situations, and how to learn proven coping skills for managing their stress response more effectively. January 30 and February 1, 6 & 8, 8:30am – 12 pm (course includes all four sessions); OR April 3, 5, 10 & 12, 8:30 am – 12 pm (course includes all four sessions)
*Top Fuel for Top Performance

The morning session looks at everyday eating and the afternoon looks at fine tuning eating, fuel for training and recovery, and body composition and sport supplements. Participation in the full day is required. January 10 & 11, 8:30 am – 12noon (course includes both sessions) OR March 5 & 6, 8:30 am – 12 noon (course includes both sessions).

Ask the Expert: Do all ACL tears need surgery? Q: I have played soccer since high school and never had a major injury. Three months ago, I was tackled from behind and badly twisted my right knee. My unit medical officer felt my anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) was torn and an MRI confirmed this diagnosis. My knee currently feels quite stable and I can run and cycle without pain. I have an appointment with an orthopedic surgeon and want to know if all ACL tears require surgery. —Sidelined A: Dear Sidelined: Sorry to hear about your knee injury. While the ACL is a major stabilizer of the knee, not everyone who tears this ligament needs a surgical repair. The decision on whether or not to operate is based on a number of considerations which include: 1. If there is damage to other structures in the knee such as the menisci, artic-
ular cartilage or other knee ligaments, then surgery is often recommended. 2. Is the person experiencing knee instability? We don’t understand why, but some people with partial or complete ACL tears have little or no instability, while other people’s knees are so loose they don’t feel safe walking down stairs. People with instability usually require surgery. 3. What are the person’s performance expectations in terms of work and sports? An office worker who cycles for fitness is more likely to tolerate an unrepaired ACL than an infantry soldier who plays on the unit basketball team. 4. Does the person feel stable wearing a custom-made knee brace? Some people find they only experience instability when they do activities requiring cutting, pivoting, twisting or rapidly moving from side to side.

5. Has the person had physiotherapy focused on increasing their quadriceps’ strength, improving their balance and enhancing their control over their knee movements? Many people find they experience little or no instability after going through a program like this. The bottom line: Every ACL tear is unique and some people can function at high levels without surgical repair or the support of a custom-made knee brace. It sounds like you are coping very well, but the only way to know if you require surgery will be to carefully test your knee to see how stable it is when you return to soccer and your full military duties. Exercise is medicine!

How to create a love of reading
for first graders and beyond
News Canada
F
rom sports to music, games and TV, there are a lot of activities to keep kids occupied outside of reading. But, the benefits of reading are endless; a love of reading builds a child's literacy skills and helps with their overall education. Andrea Lynn Beck, author of the TD Grade One Book Giveaway 2017 selected book Good Morning, Canada, has tips for parents about inspiring a love of reading for first graders and beyond. Oftentimes, the toughest part about reading with kids is finding the right story. Beck likes to encourage kids and parents to explore books together. “A great place for parents to begin is
by tuning in to what their child is curious about and by sharing what they loved to read when they were a child. Not all children are fiction readers, many prefer non-fiction.” Building a reading list together on topics kids are interested in will often spark opportunities for fun conversations long after the book has ended. Keeping children engaged in reading is simpler than you may think. Beck recommends snuggling up with your child to make reading soft, warm and fun. Using silly voices or hand motions can help keep young or reluctant readers interested. “I like to stop and ask questions or make comments about something the character has done,” says Beck. “Asking

kids what they think will happen next is also a great way to keep them engaged while fostering creativity and imagination. Also, reading to your child, beyond their reading level can open worlds and create lifelong memories.” Parents can also make sure their kids see the pleasure all family members get from reading by being active readers themselves. “Talk about your love of reading and your favourite books with your children. Let your children see your eyes light up when describing a story to a friend,” suggests Beck. By choosing engaging stories, keeping story time fun and making reading a family affair, little ones can easily become avid readers themselves.

Get Organized with the
New MFRC Deployment App Kaitlyn Kokoska MFRC Volunteer
I
’m an A-type personality. I’m a planner, down to every last week, day, and minute of my life. In some ways, this is a blessing—I’m always on top of my schedule and know what’s going on each day. However, with constant changes during posting season, friends and jobs coming and going, it can be hard to feel organized, especially when our significant others are away. Luckily, the MFRC has released a new deployment app to help both members and families get in control both before and during deployment. The free MRFC Deployment app is an organizational tool with tips and tricks about how to get through a member’s deployment. Upon the first click, you are asked to “Customize your deployment experience,” which is a relieving thought after having life tossed up in the
60
CFB ESQUIMALT / MARPAC ACTIVITY GUIDE
air due to an unexpected deployment or move. You can choose to experience the app as a spouse or parent of the member, or if children are in the mix or not. Select whether the member’s next adventure is a land, sea, in or out of the country deployment or training course, and what date and time the member is to return. Entering this information customizes the tips available to you, as well as prioritizes which aspects of deployment you may want to focus on. Once you hit the home screen, you’re greeted with a countdown clock to the exact date and time the member comes homes. Windows-esque live tiles tab the screen with “Tips,” “Resources,” “Badges,” “Stars,” and most importantly the green “Planning” tile. Planning is key in the military and therefore the meat of the App is under that tile. Here, you’ll find categories of “To Do Lists” regarding all aspects of deployment life you may not have considered. You can add your own tasks to do under each category, and with each task completed, you get a badge—making that check of the box even more satisfying. Really, it’s like a grown-up gold star system that keeps you on track. I was apprehensive about this app at first, but it did have a lot of
positive aspects. I was happy to see it encouraged taking personal responsibility. The suggested to-dos like “consider a joint bank account,” were things I hadn’t even considered (being relatively new to the lifestyle). Currently, the app is in its early days so some screen formatting issues are being worked out, and the tips only appear depending on how far along you are in the countdown. For an “in advance” kind of person like me, this was a little frustrating, though it’s a reminder to not get ahead of myself. I see potential for this app to integrate with online networks and Facebook pages, but for now, it’s a good self-contained tool to plan on your own. Really, it’s like having the MRFC handbook and website all in one place, which is great for this digital age! You can keep organized and connected with the MFRC Deployment app for your iOS or Android device by downloading it from the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store.

Top tips to stay active as you age News Canada
F
or the first time in history, there are more Canadians over the age of 65 than there are under 15. But if you haven't noticed a difference, it's not surprising. Today, people are no longer content with letting age dictate what they can and cannot do. We want to be proactive about our lives and our health — to keep active, try new things and stay independent for as long as possible. Tips like these, combined with input from the right professionals such as physi-
68
cians, dietitians and physiotherapists can help you age powerfully, not just comfortably. Every step counts. No matter your age, health or physical ability, staying active is one of the best things we can do to maintain a great quality of life. Physical activity is proven to help prevent chronic illnesses such as heart disease, stroke, Type 2 diabetes and many cancers. It may not seem important in the moment, but even small changes to our routines can go a long way toward maintaining our independence and wellbeing in the years to come.
CFB ESQUIMALT / MARPAC ACTIVITY GUIDE
If you're having trouble getting motivated, just remember every step counts. Two and a half hours of physical activity each week is a great target. If you're having difficulty reaching it, start with 10-minute sessions and add on a few minutes every time. Try exercises you enjoy, like swimming or bicycling. Group activities such as Nordic walking, jogging and spin class are great ways to hold a commitment with friends or instructors. Get a helping hand. To help you get started, there are lots of great resources online that can provide in-
formation about staying active and the exercise equipment needed to do so. For instance, to help Canadians take charge of the way they age, Shoppers Drug Mart recently launched their website wellwise.ca. It offers everything from sleep therapy to low-impact fitness and physiotherapy products, as well as supports and braces, mobility products, and tools and gadgets to stay active and well. You can even set up subscriptions for products you purchase on a regular basis. Find more information online at wellwise.ca.

Model Railroad Club
The model Railway Club started as an N Scale (1/160) NTRAK modular layout in December 1997. Currently the NTRAK layout is 30 plus feet by 40 plus feet. These modules are continuously updated as new techniques and experiences are gained including Digital Command Control (DCC) systems. The N Scale layout is currently completing conversion to DCC but this does not preclude DC locomotives from being run on the layout. The HO Scale (1/87) modular layout is also 30 plus by 40 plus feet and has completed conversion to DCC. Again this does not preclude DC locomotives from enjoying the wonders of the layout. Some of these modules depict
logging operations, mining operations and a locomotive servicing facility. Both of these layouts have been on public display and have won multiple awards as “Best Operating Layout”, “Favourite Operating Layout”; and “Best Module” at train shows in Victoria and Nanaimo. Our layout at “Christmas in the Village” is the perennial favourite display at the Saanich Historical Artefacts Society Christmas presentation.

We are motorcycle enthusiasts with a zest for group riding! CAF, DND, Spouse, or Dependant: Regardlessof bike type - try us out! To find out more, contact Club President David Wong at wongdh@shaw.ca
