A Guide to Digital Supplies & Equipment PSI was established on the long tradition of providing new and “Practical Systems” to optical labs over 40 years ago. In 1971, company founder, Bill Hernandez, introduced labs to the first Aluma-Lap. These new, lighter weight laps replaced the existing heavy cast iron laps that were causing lab equipment to wear out prematurely. We have continued that tradition to find better and more efficient ways for labs to operate over the years and are continuing that tradition with products to help improve digital lens processing. You will see the icon to the left by products that have been introduced or been found to work specifically in the digital lab. Central Slurry System
PSI’s new 915 and redesigned 913 Central Slurry Systems consolidate polish slurry for both conventional and digital polishing machines. New tank baffle provides better polish flow while the new stainless steel cooling coil provides long-term durability against corrosion. The 913, with 11 gallon reservoir, is production proven to accommodate up to 3 CCP digital machines while maintaining OEM recommended flow rates. The 915 has a 23 gallon tank with flow rates up to 100 gallons per minute. When connected to a PSI 985 chiller these units provide optimum chilling action and slurry temperature maintenance for any lab. See page 52 & 54 for more information

PSI Quick Tips! When Fining & Polishing • Enable cribbing and pin beveling options when available to promote better water and polish flow as well as to reduce shaving of the pads. • Stay within the industry recommended pin or bar pressures to prevent waves and aberrations. • Maintain consistent temperatures between fining water and polish to prevent aberrations to the lens and to keep the lens from deblocking during processing.

Industry Recommendations:
• Before changing polishes, make sure you flush out your entire system with PSI’s Clear Prep. This will get rid of any dry aluminas and debris from your system to avoid scratches. • Check your Baumé on a regular basis. When using a Baumé gauge, make sure the bubbles have dissipated by waiting 5 minutes after drawing sample before taking your reading. • Maintain your polish at a consistent temperature based on the industry recommendations throughout the day. This will improve your surface quality. • Use a central slurry system to consolidate your polish to help make slurry maintenance easier and to extend the life of your polish. • Always filter your polish through a 200-300 micron nylon filter bag.

PSI Quick Tips! Edging Thin Lenses
• Use edging blocks that match the front curve of the lens. This is most critical on the flatter base curves. • Make sure lens surface is clean prior to blocking. • Use a full contact (conformable) back chuck. • Use tape protectors like PSI LenSaver Dots on both surfaces of the lens before edging. This helps prevent slippage and gives a better surface for the edger chuck to grip. • Ensure the edger clamp (chuck) pads are clean. • After edging, rinse lenses immediately in clean water. • Take care when deblocking not to flex or bend the lens.
Industry Recommendations: Tank Temperature: 70° F (21° C) Edger Settings: Use the continuous lens rotation mode if available. Tank Baffle and by-pass with agitator provide better polish flow while eliminating vortex and aeration of the polish for improved polish quality and life. External Rear Mounted Vertical Pump prevents heat build up in slurry. It is corrosion resistant with a patented, twin impeller design for high volume circulation and leak proof operation. Designed with no seals, no bearings and no wearing parts. Vertical Bypass Valve controls the bypass of polish. It adjusts the volume and pressure at the polishers. The position of the valve will vary. Agitation of polish every morning is easily accomplished by closing the Mainline Valve and opening the Vertical Bypass Valve. This does two things: mixes the polish that has settled overnight and keeps your filter bag from loading with solids that will reduce BaumĂŠ. Mainline Valve can be closed when flushing out the reservoir and pump. This valve is open while the system is in operation.

The EPA, state, local and municipality governments have rules and regulations on what can be put down the drain. The reason being, the more solids that are disposed of in the sewer system, the more their sewage treatment plants have to work to clean it out. These agencies have put restrictions on businesses as to the amount of solids they can legally dispose of in the general sewage lines. PSI’s Pan Handler helps labs remove the majority of solid waste (lens particles and polish solids) from the wastewater before it is put in the sewage system to meet these standards. Besides helping labs meet EPA standards, the Pan Handler System will help save on having sewage lines cleaned out and on emptying septic tanks. Consult your local and state municipalities to find out what the requirements are for your area.
How a Pan Handler Works Pan Handlers are very easy to use. Wastewater is drained into the portable tank of the Pan Handler. Pan Handler Additive (a settling agent) or CadCon (see page 47) is added. The wastewater is left to settle 4-8 hours, overnight is best. Then the liquid is pumped into the stationary tank through a 5 micron string filter and out the drain. The remaining solids are pumped into the stationary tank and into a cloth filter bag. The bag is left to dry and then tied and disposed of with the solid waste. Credit Policy: • Any account with invoices over 45 days will be placed on a “no ship” basis until the account is current. • All invoices not paid within 30 days of invoice date are subject to a 1-1/2% per month finance charge. • In the event an account cannot be kept current, PSI must be notified so that special credit arrangements can be made. • New accounts will be opened with “Prepay” terms pending the establishment of approved credit through normal trade references.
Shipping Policy: • All shipments are made at the customer’s expense. • Shipping charges will be on all invoices when applicable. • All shipments are F.O.B. Odessa, FL , Altoona, PA or Long Beach, CA. • Shipping instructions should be specified when the order is placed, otherwise PSI will choose the shipping method. • Upon receipt, check cartons carefully. Note on delivery receipt any damage or abnormality. Delivery receipts signed complete, without any noted discrepancies, will not be the responsibility of PSI. Claims for damage, visible or concealed, cannot be filed by PSI.
Return Policy: • In order to return products, it is necessary to secure a “Returned Goods Authorization” (RGA) from customer service. Returned Goods Will Not be accepted without this number prominently displayed on the shipping carton and/or label. • Special order items or items that have been in the customer’s stock for over 75 days may not be returned. • There will be a 25% restocking charge on all returned goods except those items that have been shipped in error by PSI.
Warranty: • PSI manufactured machinery is warranted for 1 year, parts and labor unless specified otherwise at the point of sale. • PSI distributed finishing equipment has a limited warranty. • All products distributed by PSI are subject to manufacturer’s warranty policies.
