Financing a Loomis Education
Loomis provides a unique opportunity for smart, talented, and motivated students to receive a great education while they pursue their passions and discover new ones. The combination of rich academic and extracurricular programs, an engaged and diverse student body, and an enthusiastic and highly qualified faculty sustains a culture in which learning and becoming your best self are the highest priorities. Choosing a Loomis education for your child is an investment in his or her future. We recognize that this investment includes a significant financial commitment regardless of your family’s circumstances. And while a family’s ability to contribute to educational expenses can play a role in the outcome of a student’s application, we believe that costs should not be a deterrent to prospective families who wish to explore the extraordinary opportunities available at Loomis. Accordingly, we have designed our financial aid program to consider the needs of families across the socio-economic spectrum. Each year approximately 34% of our student population receives financial aid. We allocate more than $8 million in need-based grants with comprehensive packages for students demonstrating the greatest need as well as grants varying in size for students from middle-income families who qualify. Financial aid grants range from $1,000 up to the full cost of tuition, with the average grant covering 75 percent of tuition. We also offer two signature scholarship programs — the Kravis Scholars Program and the LC Scholars Program. (Please refer to this page for more information about these two scholarship opportunities.)
Kravis Scholars, 2012–13
Scholarship Programs The Henry R. Kravis Leadership Scholarship Program
We encourage you to apply for financial assistance if you feel you are unable to meet our costs. More information about the financial aid application process is available in this brochure as well as online at www.loomischaffee.org/financialaid.
Henry R. Kravis ’63, an American business leader and Loomis alumnus, created the Kravis Scholars program to provide opportunities for students with significant financial need from culturally, geographically, and ethnically under-represented backgrounds. Students who apply for financial aid and demonstrate leadership potential, consistent academic achievement, and seek to serve as influential leaders in their communities qualify for consideration. In addition to a competitive needbased financial aid grants for those who qualify, each Kravis Scholar receives a fully funded pre-Loomis summer enrichment experience, a travel grant for overseas travel, a laptop computer, and access to a mentoring program providing quality support throughout his/her time at Loomis and beyond.

The LC Scholars Program provides financial support, summer enrichment, ongoing mentoring, and international travel to students who demonstrate exceptional leadership qualities, outstanding academic work, and an extraordinary commitment to “the best self and the common good.” All 9th grade applicants who fit these criteria are considered for this program. LC Scholars receive a fully funded 9th grade summer enrichment opportunity as well as a travel grant for overseas travel during the 11th grade summer. Additionally, all LC Scholars receive a laptop computer, a trip to the CT Forum, and other wonderful benefits that accompany this program. In addition, students who apply and qualify for financial aid will receive a competitive, need-based grant for tuition.
Financial Aid Application Process Loomis Chaffee uses School and Student Services (SSS) to process financial aid applications. SSS is a service of the National Association of Independent Schools. Based on the financial information you provide on your Parents’ Financial Statement (PFS), SSS will use a standard calculation to determine an estimated amount that your family can contribute toward educational expenses. The Loomis Chaffee Financial Aid Committee uses this estimation as a starting point with which to determine a financial aid award.
In order to apply for financial aid, please follow the steps below: 1. Be sure to indicate on your admission application and online inquiry that you will be applying for financial aid. 2. By January 31, complete a PFS by mail or online at www.sss.nais.org. 3. After submitting your PFS, you will be given instructions about submitting additional documents. Please submit signed copies of the following documents to SSS: a. A signed copy of your 2012 and 2013 federal tax returns with all supporting schedules. Frequently Asked Questions What if my 2013 tax return is not available by January 31? In this case, please submit your 2013 W2s and a signed copy of your 2012 tax return. You must submit your signed 2013 return as soon as it is completed. All financial awards are contingent upon the receipt of the 2013 information. If parents are divorced or separated, who fills out the financial aid application? Each parent, regardless of custodial arrangements, must fill out a complete financial aid application. What if I have more than one child in school? Tuition expenses for all children in tuition-charging schools (excluding graduate school) will be taken into consideration. Please be sure to include all children and all educational expenses in the designated place on the PFS. What if we own our own business or farm? If you own a business or a farm, you must submit the Business/Farm Statement in addition to your PFS. You can access this form at www.sss.nais.org. Is financial aid available for non-U.S. citizens? Yes, on a limited basis. There is a supplemental international student aid application (available on our website) that must be submitted. If we receive financial aid in our child’s first year, will we receive financial aid in subsequent years? Yes. You must reapply every year for financial aid, and your award will be adjusted based on changes in your family’s financial situation. Does applying for financial aid hurt my child’s chances of being admitted to Loomis Chaffee? We only admit students whom we are able to fund through our financial aid budget. Each year we put a small number of admitted students on our financial aid waiting list, but a second group of students is denied admission because we are unable to provide financial aid for them. If my child enrolls at Loomis Chaffee without receiving financial aid, can we apply for aid in subsequent years? You are welcome to apply but it is unlikely that we will be able to meet your need unless your family’s financial circumstances change. In that case, we will make every effort to provide aid if you qualify.
