Editorial

Dear viewer,

Loom Magazine www.loom-mag.net Alexander Lembke Editor-in-chief Loom Magazine issue 5 Media faculty BU Weimar

we are proud to present you another special issue of the loom magazine. This time it’s all about nights and lights! In May a group of students went to Tampere, a small city in Finland, to take part in a one week lightpainting workshop at the tamk University of Applied Sciences/School of Art and Media. We had lectures during daytime but at night no one was sleeping – everybody was outside strolling around in the city taking pictures painted with light.

You don’t need many things: Darkness, a camera, an automatic release, a variety of different light sources and of course some time to draw!

Journey WE–Rostock Our journey/study trip began on a Friday noon, when all of us gathered on time at the Weimar railway station. All of us? Well, our tutor was late but he had the best excuse: What? I’m the tutor! We arrived in Rostock in the early evening and had to wait for the shuttle to the ferry for quite a time. But surprisingly the station forecourt was pretty entertaining – not because we had some beers to drink to kill time, rather because there were some really drunken guys from the Netherlands who kept us entertained with some babbling, some falling off of the bench and some getting rescued by the ambulance.

Superfast Ferry Friday night at around 10 pm we moved into our teeny-weeny cabins on the superfast ferry. After a first look around we spotted a sauna, a casino and the notorious »alcohol-without-taxes« -liquor store with its bottles ringing and clanging gently depending of the movement of the ferry. Some of us stayed up so long that it became difficult to arrive at breakfast within the given period – but yes, you can have breakfast in hardly ten minutes!

Tampere People and Living After a six hour stop in Helsinki we arrived in Tampere on Sunday afternoon and checked in at our hotel. In the course of this week we found out that Finnish people are really friendly and go to saunas a lot where they drink loads of beer. Almost everybody was able to speak English, although it seemed sometimes that you only have to put an ÂťiÂŤ at the end of a word to make it Finnish.

Tampere Art Festival a) Workshop On four days of the week we had lectures about lightpainting in general and lightpainting artists and of course we got some homework, too. The first task was to illuminate an object in a completely dark room – which resulted in occupied bathrooms until late at night and fellow students knocking on our doors asking if they could use our toilet really urgently. The second task took us out into the nocturnal Tampere where we lightpainted the city with graffiti. Finally we had to lightpaint a portrait.

b) Festival The Tampere Art Festival (taf) featured film screenings, exhibitions, installations and some really rocking bands. The Finnish and German students who took part in the workshop had a little blue container, in which they offered lightpainted portraits on polaroids to the festival guests. This offer was taken willingly and so we had a line of people standing and waiting outside the container until 10 pm when the festival doors finally closed for the day.
