Create the sandwich version of a ham and pineapple pizza by topping pumpernickel bread with smoked ham, fresh mozzarella, thin slices of pineapple, thinly sliced jalapeño and fresh cilantro. It’s the perfect combo of savory, salty, spicy and sweet.
In bowl, whisk together 3 Tbsp plain yogurt, 2 Tbsp lime juice, 1 Tbsp cider vinegar, 2 tsp honey and ¼ tsp each salt and pepper. Toss with 2 scallions (finely chopped), ¼ red cabbage (shredded) and ¼ pineapple (cut into ½-in. pieces). Fold in ¼ cup cilantro. Serve with grilled chicken, fish or pork.
In small saucepan, combine pineapple cores and ¾ cup each sugar and water. Simmer (without stirring) until sugar dissolves, 12 min. Remove from heat and let cool to room temp; strain. Use in your favorite cocktails or try tossing with berries and serving over pound cake.

Secrets to Bliss Two hot topics everyone seems to continually crave advice about are organizing and sleep. No surprise: I’m someone who is obsessed with both. When shut-eye comes easily, you hardly think about it — but if you lie in bed staring at the ceiling, hoping for sleep to take over, and it doesn’t…frustration, anxiety and exhaustion ensue. The same idea applies to clutter: When surfaces are clear and everything is in its place, life just feels easier, but if you struggle to find a home for everything, it can be overwhelming. So when it comes to both sleep and organizing, we are too often faced with the joy/frustration duality. You get it right…delight! When it’s not working…misery! Because these are pretty personal problems, the solutions also need to be personal. So I asked our team to share their own tried-and-true nighttime rituals and clutter busters.

Bronzer or blush
Bronzer’s warm brown hue defines eyes the same way eyeshadow or liner does (a neutral blush can work as well). Blend it from lashline up to crease with a finger or an eyeshadow or liner brush.
Clear balm or ointment
Relieve dry-feeling skin on the face or body by gliding on a clear balm or ointment (even one for lips can do the job). Rub a dab between fingers or hands first to help soften it if needed.

SLEEP SPECIAL
WHAT IS BEAUTY SLEEP? We all know a great night’s sleep is essential for feeling energized and alert (and for our overall health), but getting quality shut-eye can also help you look better in the morning — and beyond. “Rest is essential for repairing skin,” says Debra Jaliman, M.D., a dermatologist in New York City and the author of Skin Rules, giving it the opportunity to recover from damage caused by both external factors (i.e., UV rays and pollution) and internal ones (lifestyle habits like smoking and diet). “When we sleep, the level of our stress hormone, cortisol, goes down, and our sleep hormone, melatonin, goes up, which puts our body and our skin in repair mode,” explains Whitney Bowe, M.D., a New York dermatologist and the author of Dirty Looks: The Secret to Beautiful Skin. Growth hormone, produced during deep sleep, plays a role in protein synthesis, which helps our bodies heal damage to cells, including skin, says W. Chris Winter, M.D., a sleep medicine specialist in Charlottesville, VA.
revitalizes eyes, but even if you can’t get additional zzz’s, reduce bags by sleeping propped up on two pillows or with your pillow angled up slightly to help elevate your head. “When you lie flat, fluid can gather around your eyes,” which exacerbates puffiness, says Elizabeth Tanzi, M.D., a dermatologist in Washington, DC.

Smoother, firmer skin with fewer signs of aging “The deeper layers of your skin are working at night to build new collagen, which makes your complexion smooth and firm,” Dr. Bowe explains. Pro tip: Keep wrinkles at bay by sleeping on your back rather than on your side or facedown, suggests Jesleen Ahluwalia, M.D., a New York City dermatologist. “Repeated pressure on the skin that causes creases can lead to setin lines over time,” she adds.
More mileage from your skincare products Skincare treatments are generally more effective during this “repair cycle of the skin” at night, Dr. Jaliman explains, possibly in part because skin is exposed to fewer environmental stressors then. “Studies show that new skin cells grow

faster while you sleep,” Dr. Bowe says. “Take advantage of this period of renewal by using products that assist the process so you wake up with healthier skin.” (Turn to page 32 for the best GH Beauty Lab– recommended nighttime regimen and top-tested product picks.)
Solid rest contributes to lusher hair too. “Sleep is necessary for proper protein synthesis in the production of hair strands as well,” Dr. Bowe explains. “And it can impact your hormones, which will also have an effect on your hair’s growth and appearance.” To get softer, healthier hair while you doze, try smoothing one of the new no-residue deep conditioners meant to be worn overnight all over damp or dry strands before bed once or twice per week. GH Beauty Lab pick: Paul Mitchell Lavender Mint Overnight Moisture Therapy, $20, Ulta
Brighter, smoother eyes “Lack of restorative sleep can leave eyes swollen in the morning, because elevated cortisol levels change the salt balance in your body, leading to water retention,” Dr. Bowe says. More, better sleep

SLEEP SPECIAL
3-Step Nighttime Ritual 1 2 It falls between seven and eight hours of rest per night, but the quantity of sleep you get is not the only thing that matters. Quality is key too, Dr. Bowe says: “Not all sleep is equally restorative.” It’s important that your zzz’s be as uninterrupted as possible so you move through all the phases of your sleep cycle and your body’s reparative processes can occur, including those affecting skin and hair. If you can’t fall asleep or you wake up in the night, focus on your breathing, keep your eyes closed and avoid looking at the clock, which can increase stress. Turn to our Bedding Awards on page 89 to see toptested genius sleep enhancers.
yo u r s k i n on sleep d e p r i vat i o n Compromising your seven to eight hours can do a number on how you feel (see page 80) and how you look. Exhaustion can show up on your face as signs of skin fatigue including dark circles, sallowness, dullness, droopiness and even blemishes. “Our bodies perceive loss of sleep, or lack of quality of sleep, as stress,” Dr. Bowe says. “Those stress signals can cause breakouts, make skin less capable of trapping moisture and slow down skin cell turnover.” In fact, a study found that women who didn’t get enough quality sleep had more signs of skin aging (like lines and spots) and slower sun-damage recovery over time than those with good habits. Blood flow to your skin increases while you snooze too, so skimping on sleep can make your face look dry and ashen rather than rosy, Dr. Winter explains.

TREAT Once your canvas is clean, layer on your skincare, like serums and creams. Before bed, apply a night-specific treatment with proven anti-aging ingredients like retinol to help counteract lines, says David Leffell, M.D., a professor of dermatology at Yale School of Medicine. This and actives like peptides and alpha hydroxy acids (e.g., glycolic acid) “are often added to skincare products to promote skin renewal, brighten tone, boost collagen production and even reduce acne,” Dr. Bowe explains. To hydrate and smooth wrinkles, look for hyaluronic acid, which attracts water into skin, says Francesca Fusco, M.D., a New York City dermatologist. Last, layer on a coat of lip balm and eye cream too, as the thin skin in these areas can be prone to dehydration and damage. Turn the page for the winners of the GH Beauty Lab’s anti-aging night cream test.

Opt for a silk pillowcase instead of one made of cotton or other rougher materials, which can damage hair (and skin) over time. “Hair glides over silk’s smooth surface with less friction, so you’re less likely to wake up with frizz and tangles,” says GH Textiles Lab Director Lexie Sachs. “The majority of our testers reported that the cases helped stop bedhead.” Studies also show that friction from sleeping on a less smooth fabric can lead to wrinkles in skin, and a silky surface can reduce this effect, Sachs explains. CLEANSE Not removing makeup and impurities that have accumulated by day’s end can cause pores to clog, which can bring on breakouts and dullness, yet 12% of women don’t regularly use any face cleanser, a GH survey found. As a first step every evening before bed, Dr. Bowe recommends washing with a “gentle pH-balanced cleanser, which won’t strip skin of its natural oils, helping your skin barrier stay intact and healthy.”
OUCH. Is your cell phone bill just as out of control? Then this is your wake-up call.

Philosophy, packed with skinsoftening, nourishing hyaluronic acid, glycerin and squalane, was the hero hydrator of all the winners. The cream rated best for smoothing texture, being gentle on skin and its subtle scent, and it earned high marks for firming.
Despite its featherweight, gellike formula, Exuviance was a heavy hitter, winning for minimizing the look of lines. The treatment, loaded with actives like glycolic acid, peptides and retinol, gave faces a “lift” too, rating at the top both in Lab evaluations and with testers for making skin look and feel firmer.

• Some testers reported that it took a while for the “rich,” “thick” cream to be absorbed into their skin. • A small amount goes a long way.
• The least moisturizing of the test winners (it increased skin’s hydration levels by 18%). • Some users commented that the product was slightly irritating and might have caused breakouts.
• It didn’t perform as well as the other winners at minimizing lines and wrinkles. • Testers found that the thick cream wasn’t absorbed quickly, though some liked the “luxurious,” “buttery” texture.

The formula increased skin firmness by 27% per the Lab’s Cutometer device, which measures skin laxity. “This seemed to work as well as my prescription retinoid,” a tester marveled. “My face was firmer and smoother when I woke up each morning,” a second said.
It raised hydration by 34% over six hours, according to calculations with the Corneometer device, which gauges skin moisture levels, and it upped firmness by 29% in four weeks. Almost 100% of testers said it didn’t irritate or cause redness. “My skin looked better after the first night,” one remarked.
According to digital imaging with the Lab’s Visia Complexion Analyzer device, it improved the look of wrinkles by an impressive 10% in four weeks and raised skin’s firmness 31% in Cutometer measurements. Several testers reported that they noticed fewer lines too.
Cutometer calculations showed that it boosted skin elasticity and firmness by 33% over four weeks; hydration increased by 28% in six hours in Corneometer readings. Two testers reported that it faded their dark spots. “I could really tell a difference in my skin—it was more firm and moist 24/7,” another raved.

Age Appropriate
In pictures from my earliest childhood, my grandmother looks like the Queen of England. She’s dressed in tailored wool suits with brooches, prim hats that match her pocketbook and sensible heels. Every week she had her white hair styled into an elegant meringue at the beauty parlor. I thought she was ancient, but at the time of the photos, she was only 55. Shockingly, this is the age I am now. (Same for Sandra Bullock!) I routinely stomp around in blue jeans, ankle boots and a red leather jacket. My hair is almost as long as it was in high school, and I do not think twice about wearing both sparkly nail polish and eyeshadow. I do this not because I’m trying to fight time, but simply because this is how I’ve dressed forever. I fully own my age in this age, which means that I often dress like an 8-year-old with money: confident, comfortable and tinged with glitter. My 40- and 50-something friends follow suit: Outside the office, they wear trendy

statement shirts, H&M sweater dresses, cool sneakers. My friend Kate has pink hair. Sara has just gotten her third tattoo. When she’s off duty as a business owner, Desa wears fringed French jeans. We feel no compulsion to “look our
age” because we don’t even know — or accept — what this means. Many of us feel more attractive today than we did at 16. And all of us look decades younger than our grandmothers did at our age. Some of this, of course, is due to the usual explanations: medical
advances, improved working conditions, better nutrition and exercise. But perhaps the most important reason for it is that my generation has rejected what I call applied matronhood. When my grandmother was 55, she was expected to look “appropriate” for her age. Department stores carried whole fashion sections for “the matron.” Specifically designed for older women, these “dignified” clothes had flared A-line skirts to accommodate postmenopausal hips, low hemlines, ample structure in the bosoms and “discreet” décolletage. Combined with the short, frozen curls that were the standard hairstyle of “the matron,” the look was ladylike and august — but most of all, muted. This ideal was based on a very restrictive vision of what older women could be. A matron, by definition, is “an older, dignified married woman.” In the term’s heyday, the flip side of matron was not teenager, but spinster. For our grandmothers, these

were among the very few categories for “respectable” women beyond a certain age (a third, equally groanworthy, was widow). We Gen Xers and Boomers look, act, dress and feel younger than our grandmothers did because we have far more power, options and agency. Many of us in midlife are still mothers of school-age children. We’re juggling jobs, running businesses, returning to school. Some of us are primary breadwinners or single parents. Looking at my grandmother’s poignant picture,
I can glimpse who I might have been in a different era — and who she might have become in mine. For though my grandmother’s meticulously tailored dresses and coiffed hair gave her old-world elegance, they also were coded signals that she was no longer considered attractive or relevant in the greater society. So often, for women, “aging gracefully” has meant becoming silent and invisible, accepting a back seat and — my least favorite of all — being humorless. Yeah, well. My role model
today is Candace Payne, a.k.a. the Chewbacca Mom. She became an Internet sensation for donning a Star Wars Wookiee mask while running errands. There she was, just a busy middle-aged mom, being wholly herself, laughing joyously. My generation is insisting upon continuing to be ourselves: That’s our beauty secret. We women may grow wiser as we age, but that doesn’t mean we need to act old. We may only be young once, but we can remain vital and engaged —
and playful — forever.

Go easy on the foundation. “You want to even out skin, not totally cover it—too much foundation can look like a mask. Sweep on a minimal amount of lightweight, highpigment foundation. Buff with a big brush.”
Draw the line at feathering. “A lip pencil is your best friend to keep color from bleeding. After penciling the shape, use a brush to apply lipstick. Then run a cotton bud around the edge of the lip to remove the hard line.”

We’ve forgotten what women really look like. My sister, who’s a few years older than I am, was at a salon, and the stylist said to her, “Wow, your gray hair is throwing me off.” So she told him about me and showed him my picture. His reaction: “Her skin looks 27, but her hair definitely doesn’t.” But it does — there are lots of other women in their 20s and 30s on my blog. We’re just not used to seeing what women look like when they age naturally. The standard for women has been that when you see gray, you start dyeing so you can continue to look like a previous version of

You will feel so powerful. One of the things I hear most from other women who have shared their journeys with me is “I have this newfound confidence I didn’t even know I was capable of.” When you put your resources into keeping up an image, you take energy away from what you can be. But when women feel to their cores unashamed about who they are and just live vibrantly and honestly, they can change the world.

I found my first gray hair when I was 14, but I started dyeing when I went away to art school for college. My hair was just about every color, and I enjoyed that phase. But when I decided to return to my natural brunette, dyeing my hair became, as it is for many women, about shamefully covering my roots. I was 24 when I decided to stop cold turkey, and it was terrifying. The first few months are awkward. You wonder, Do people think I’m letting myself go? I had to be loving to myself, I had to have thick skin, I had to be patient — which I am not. I’ve learned so much, like…
My husband was a big factor in my deciding to go gray. When we were dating, What if he finds out I have gray hair? was a huge fear. So when I decided to grow it out, I was like, “Just so you know, I dye my hair, and I’m gonna stop.” He was so supportive that I realized the fear was all in my head. I’m still getting used to guys in their 30s, 40s, 50s and beyond not realizing that they’re staring at me and that I see them staring at me — but they are.

Make sure it’s actually machine washable. A search for washable rugs may lead you to some that need to be washed by hand or professionally cleaned. Even when we searched for machine-washable rugs, we found many that weren’t truly machine washable. Read the details before you buy, and if you’re unsure, reach out to the brand directly.
Consider the material. Many washable rugs are made with synthetic materials, which make them better able to stand up to the agitation of washing machines. You can still find washable rugs made of natural materials like wool and cotton, but these aren’t as widely available and tend to be more expensive.
Check the size. Washable rugs come in all shapes and sizes, so if you’re going to buy one that’s large, make sure your washing machine is big enough to hold it. Otherwise you may need to take it to a laundromat, and it might not be worth the trouble.
Launder them occasionally. These rugs can be vacuumed and spot-cleaned regularly, so save the machine washing for spills and messes or the times when they’re due for a deeper clean. This prevents unnecessary wear and tear and will help keep them looking as good as new.

Q I used a laundry prewash spray on my jacket, and it left a stain. Why? — HALI P.
A: Laundry pretreater is made to remove stains during the wash
cycle, so it’s always best applied just a few minutes before tossing your garment into the machine. If allowed to dry on a fabric, it can stain. To remove the mark, try rinsing with cold water — that’s likely all it will take. Some stain removers, like Shout Advanced Action Gel, are safe to apply up to a week before laundering: The benefit is that they start to work right away and keep the stain from setting until you have a chance to do the laundry. Read the label to see which type of stain remover yours is. If it doesn’t explicitly indicate that it’s safe to leave on the fabric for several days, let it set no longer than five minutes before washing.
many robotic vacuums in our GH Cleaning Lab, and they’ve come a long way since we tried the first ones over 15 years ago. High-end models now use cameras and lasers to navigate better, and they can be scheduled and monitored via an app on your phone. That said, even basic bots that bump their way around your home will clean under and behind the bed and low furniture where a regular vacuum can’t reach (or you don’t bother to go). Most have sensors to keep them from falling down stairs. No robot deep-cleans as well as a full-size vacuum, so don’t toss yours just yet. But send out a robot routinely to nab pet hair and other debris, and you’ll be using your regular vacuum a lot less often. Look for the results of our full test of robot vacuums, coming soon.

WASH DISH SPRAY, $5,

Scrubbing crusty cookware is no easy task. Even overnight soaking doesn’t always loosen dried-on deposits enough to completely eliminate the need for scouring. That’s why I’m excited about new Dawn Powerwash Dish Spray. It cuts through tough gunk with just the pull of a trigger. This new formula dispenses as a foam, to cling to grease and baked-on residue and immediately start dissolving it. A few minutes after spraying, simply wipe or lightly rub pans and dishes clean, then rinse. Use it on one item or an entire sink full of dishes. Lab lowdown: We like that Dawn Powerwash starts working while you’re still cooking —or while you’re having dinner. And because it’s a foam, it’s less messy than soaking pots in your sink or on your counter. In GH Cleaning Lab tests, Dawn Powerwash impressively cut through hamburger drippings burned onto a skillet and melted grime off a grill grate with just a wipe and a rinse. The nozzle makes targeting hard-to-clean casserole corners super easy, and when the bottle is empty, simply remove the original sprayer and screw it onto a refill.

Keep the best, toss the rest. Choose a few pieces from an overgrown collection to display. Christine Kell, a decluttering coach at Gaining Space, had one client who made art out of his stamp collection and another who sewed beads from her bridal gown onto another dress. Digitize your memories. Save papers you just can’t bear to part with (e.g., your master’s thesis or old love letters) on your hard drive or a file-sharing service like Dropbox. Take a picture of large items, like your grandmother’s sideboard (which, be honest, you are not going to use), to satisfy your sentimental side. Make this your new mantra: “I love this quote: ‘The barn’s burned down—now I can see the moon,’” says Kell. Remind yourself that you’re not casting memories and heirlooms aside—you’re creating breathing room in your current life, freeing yourself of extra weight and recognizing that what’s most important is happening right now— not in a box in your attic. —Lauren Piro

This bank had smiled at me when I had been banished to my room and given me money to buy treats from the ice cream truck. These were all items of comfort. And now these were all items that served no actual purpose for us anymore. Still, it was hard to decide what got a price tag and what stayed. So I asked myself, How often will I use this? Do I need this item for the memory, or could I take a picture of it from which I could garner the same joy? When I stumbled upon something that would have made my mother remark “This could be worth money someday,” I knew it was likely a sign that I should sell it now and not “someday.” Months after we began chiseling away at the decades of my family’s stuff, garage sale day came, and promptly at 8 a.m., the cars began to pull up. It wasn’t exactly the vision I’d imagined. It was sunny, but also sticky and humid. There were no children with a thirst-quenching lemonade stand. We did manage to make $214 while clearing out a lot from the house. But as I watched a silverhaired woman carry away my beloved birdcage, I knew it was OK to say goodbye. I realized that emotional attachment was not enough to allow something to clutter your home or life. Happiness comes from the using of an object, not the owning of it. That’s why that Pinocchio bank now sits prominently in my children’s bedroom, so they can save their pennies and treasure it as much as I did.

We’ll acknowledge that it’s seriously sad to get rid of those old onesies. But if the clothes are in good condition, they can help a family in need.
Unused Craft Supplies
You heard that knitting could be great for de-stressing, so you threw yourself into it, but you haven’t touched your supplies in months. Either you knit or you don’t. If you’re leaning toward “I don’t,” donate the excess supplies to a local senior center.
Forgotten Candles
Donate or pass any like-new candles you’ve been given in scents you can’t stand to friends who will love them. Toss candles that look as if they’re from the Haunted Mansion.
Old Greeting Cards
Let yourself keep a few cards that are meaningful (especially if they’re from a now-departed loved one), but recycle the rest or use them for a craft.
DVDs/CDs/VHS Tapes
You could easily clear up space in your house by dumping movies that are available to stream and downloading your favorite CDs to your computer. (And no, they will not likely bring in money on eBay.)
Empty Journals
Damaged Dishes
The chip on that plate or bowl you’ve had since living in your first apartment may not seem like a problem, but water can soak in with every wash, leading to nasty bacteria growth over time. And the moisture can create bigger cracks if the item is microwaved.
Costume Jewelry
Former Best Sellers
Pass your favorite bygone beach reads on to friends by holding a book swap. Or, find a Little Free Library—these mini shelves filled with books free for the taking pop up in many places. (PS: Your real library probably doesn’t need these books.)
We’re talking not about valuable gems and jewelry made from precious metals but instead the cheaper pieces, usually made of plastic. Maybe a piece was a gift, or maybe it was a bargain too good to pass up. But if you don’t wear it, put it on the donation pile.
Either take up the journaling habit or pass them along to someone who could get use out of them. You might also want to consider conserving paper by upgrading to a reusable smart notebook.
Travel Toiletries
There are better ways to remember a vacation than by keeping the tiny bottles of shampoo and lotion currently cluttering up your undersink cabinet. Use them up or donate them to a shelter.

What is AMD? Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is a progressive eye condition that can impact central vision, causing difficulty conducting daily tasks such as driving, reading and recognizing the faces of loved ones1. An estimated 61 million of us are at high risk for serious vision loss, which ranks number one on the list of Americans’ worst health nightmares (it trumps fear of losing memory or even a limb), according to Johns Hopkins researchers. “The eyes have many delicate parts, so they simply don’t age very well,” says Irene Barbazetto, M.D., Ph.D., clinical instructor of ophthalmology at NYU Langone Health in New York City. That’s why regular checkups, including a dilated eye exam in which the ophthalmologist can look at your eyes’ inner workings, are key to spotting conditions that put you at risk.

ANATOMY OF THE EYE
Let’s say you happen upon a field of bright yellow daffodils. What you think of as your eye is just a tiny portion of the magical machinery that transforms what you’re looking at into an image your brain understands. Sight begins here: Light bounces off the flowers and enters this transparent tissue on the orb’s surface, and the cornea bends the light to make the image clearer. cornea
The colored part of the eye (surrounded by the bright white sclera) doesn’t just look beautiful — it’s in charge of changing the size of the pupil.
iris
pupil This opening in the
iris’s center widens to welcome light when it’s dark and narrows to restrict light when there’s too much, letting us
glimpse those flowers at both daytime and dusk. lens The light bends
even more once it hits the lens, which is situated behind the iris. This structure controls focus, letting us take in the field from far away or a single blossom up close. Vitreous humor
Taking up most of the space between the back of the lens and the retina, this clear gel helps keep the eye rounded and nourished. retina The light that
comes in via the cornea
and through the lens winds up at this tissue in the back. Here, photoreceptor cells (including rods and cones) transform light into electrical pulses. The tiny area in the center of the retina called the macula is responsible for our central vision, giving us the ability to see the flowers directly in front of us. The electrical signals travel through the million-plus fibers of this nerve to enter the brain, which identifies the pulses as those beautiful springtime blooms. optic nerve

EYE DO’S — AND DON’TS Take care of these minor but uncomfortable eye issues the right way so you can stop seeing red ASAP. Eye infections Toss that too-old eye makeup! Bacteria in your eyes can result in redness, itching, swelling, discharge, pain and/or difficulty seeing. Contact lens wearers, who may introduce germs as they insert the lenses, are at high risk, says Vatinee Bunya, M.D., codirector of the Penn Dry Eye & Ocular Surface Center and assistant professor of ophthalmology at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine. Do: Replace mascara every three months to keep it free of
bacteria. And take out contacts at night, Dr. Bunya advises, even if they’re labeled for long-term wear — sleeping in them ups your risk tenfold because it gives bacteria time to multiply. Don’t: Ignore infections — you may need Rx antibiotic drops. Pink eye People commonly refer to any irritant this way, but the term refers to a contagious virus similar to the common cold that inflames the mucosal covering of the eye, Dr. Bunya says. Symptoms are the telltale redness in the whites of the eyes or inside lids along with swelling, itching and crusty discharge. Do: Stay away from work or school for seven to 10 days — until after symptoms have totally disappeared — or you could spread it, Dr. Bunya cautions. Wash hands regularly and keep fingers away from eyes. Don’t: Take antibiotics, because they don’t work on viruses and overuse of them contributes to dangerous drug resistance.
Artificial tears may help until it clears up, but if the pain is severe or doesn’t get better, talk to your doctor. Dry eyes and blurry vision Intense watching of screens makes us forget to blink, which leads to these issues as well as headaches. Do: Use the 20-20-20 rule to relax and rewet your eyes: Every 20 minutes, look 20 feet in front of you for 20 seconds. A phone alert can help you remember. Don’t: Set your monitor so high that your eyes must be completely open to see it. Exposing more of your eyeballs to air speeds up evaporation of moisture, Dr. Bunya says. Floaters The clear gel behind the eye clumps together, allowing us to see it. The gel clumps aren’t usually dangerous, but if new floaters appear suddenly or you see sudden flashes of light or shadows, see your doctor to rule out a retinal tear. Do: Leave it be. Your eye and brain will eventually adjust and you’ll stop noticing the floater, says Elena Roth, M.D., a comprehensive ophthalmologist at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami. Don’t: Use eye drops for floaters — they won’t help them disappear. Allergic itches As if sneezing and a runny nose from irritants weren’t bothersome enough! Do: Store preservative-free single-use artificial tears in your refrigerator, Dr. Bunya suggests. The drops help flush out irritants, and the chill feels especially soothing. Allergy eye drops may also provide relief. Don’t: Rub your eyes. Sit on your hands if you must! Rubbing might feel good in the moment, but it releases histamines that worsen itching.
TRY THESE TRICKS EYE DOCS TELL THEIR PATIENTS:
Munch on veggies.
Carrots, squash and pumpkin are full of vitamin A, which is essential to eye health, Dr. Roth says, and dark leafy greens like spinach, kale and collards are high in the eye-friendly antioxidant lutein.
Give up smoking.
Quitting lowers the risk of not only lung and heart disease, but also age-related macular degeneration, cataracts and optic nerve damage.
Wear shades. Even
in winter it’s important to protect your eyes from ultraviolet rays, which can lead to cataracts and some cancers. Look for large lenses and 99% to 100% blocking of both UVA and UVB radiation.
Grab goggles. Don
safety goggles or eye guards for any sport using a ball or any time you are using a hammer, a nail gun or chemicals that might splash or are grinding metal (such as to make jewelry or home repairs). About 2,000 Americans injure their eyes each day at work, per the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, but experts believe that 90% of those injuries would be less severe or could be prevented with proper protection.
Health

“wet” version occurs when the macula fills with leaky abnormal blood vessels. Aging and genetics are most to blame, but smoking also increases your risk. help: Treatments have been shown to slow progression and save sight, which is why it’s crucial to diagnose AMD early, Dr. Barbazetto says. Once you hit your midto-late 40s, you should have an eye exam every two years, or annually if you have a family history of AMD. Your doctor will dilate your pupils to look behind them. If early to intermediate AMD is diagnosed, you can take special vitamins packed with C, E, zinc, lutein and other nutrients to slow down the damage. Arresting the wet version requires regular injection of medicine into your eye (doctors do use a numbing agent first). GLAUCOMA What it is: Pressure buildup in the eye can cause damage to the optic nerve over time. Peripheral vision is affected first, but total blindness may eventually result. the cause: Anyone can get it, but age and genetics (especially if you’re African American or Hispanic/Latina) can up the odds. help: See your eye doc for a checkup — half of sufferers don’t know they have the disease. Although physicians may use a test in which a puff of air is blown into your eye for screening, official diagnosis requires a dilated exam to scrutinize the optic nerve as well as other tests. Medicine, lasers and/or surgery can keep the disease from worsening.

THE 5 MOST COMMON VISION ISSUES Early diagnosis and treatment are the best ways to deal with these potential sight stealers. REFRACTIVE ERRORS What it is: Ask anyone with glasses or contacts! These are simply garden-variety nearsightedness and farsightedness as well as astigmatism (distorted vision at all distances) and presbyopia, which is the loss of up-close focusing ability (hello, reading glasses!). These issues happen when the eye can’t properly bend light as it enters. the cause: Being human, basically, although genetics, age and gender play a role. Women 40 and over experience 14% more refractive issues than men. help: Glasses, contact lenses or laser surgery. The National Eye Institute says 11 million Americans aren’t sufficiently corrected and would see a whole lot better if they were, so update your prescription.

CATARACT What it is: Proteins in the lenses clump together into clouds, blurring vision. the cause: “When people get old enough, almost everyone has a cataract,” says Dr. Barbazetto, who’s in private practice at Vitreous Retina Macula Consultants of New York. If you have spent a lot of time in the sun, take steroids, have diabetes or smoke or drink a lot, your risk is even higher. help: A cataract can be detected during an eye exam with dilation, but you’ll likely notice it first: Colors will start to look faded, you’ll see a halo around light or you won’t be able to see easily at night. If your cataract is small, try reading with a magnifying glass and using brighter lights at home and the office. If it gets too big, the cure is outpatient surgery to swap an artificial lens in for the clouded one.
2
MACULAR DEGENERATION What it is: The macula helps us see right in front of us — the person we’re talking to, cars ahead on the road, the text message we’re trying to read. With age-related macular degeneration (AMD), which nearly 2 million Americans have, some sufferers may see a gray or black spot in the center, with some vision in the periphery. the cause: Over time, the macula can develop deposits, causing early (also called “dry”) AMD, the most common type. The
3
DIABETIC RETINOPATHY What it is: Eye problems can be a complication of diabetes, as high blood sugar damages retinal vessels over time. With the many cases of type 2 diabetes in the U.S., this is the leading cause of blindness in American adults. the cause: Poor control of blood sugar can lead to diabetic retinopathy. help: “People with diabetes can prevent this complication with strict glucose control,” says Dr. Roth. If you have diabetes, eat right, exercise, take all prescribed medications, check your blood sugar regularly and get a yearly dilated retinal exam. Lasers, injections and/or surgery can be effective, but only before the loss of sight, which is why early diagnosis is crucial, Dr. Roth says.

The Scary Truth About Sleep Deprivation …and smart, easy ways to get a good night’s zzz’s Whether you pulled an almostall-nighter because your kid was
sick, you couldn’t put down your awesome book or you were having an especially good time, the effects are the same. Just one night of spotty sleep can leave you with a number of unpleasant effects the next day. Acute sleep deprivation can result in:
store them,” says Camilo A. Ruiz, D.O., medical director at Choice Physicians Sleep Center in South Florida. The longer you’re without decent rest (and if you go without it for, say, several days in a row), the more likely you are to develop more serious problems. Prolonged sleep deprivation leads to:
and causing inflammatory stress. Over months and years, chronic sleep deprivation raises your risk of a whole host of issues, including: Heart disease Weight gain Diabetes
Memory lapses
Neurological problems
Irritability
Delusional thinking
Altered hormone production
Lack of focus
Hallucinations
Impaired temperature regulation
Reduced vigilance
Paranoia
Higher risk of accidents Fatigue
But that’s not only from getting little sleep — it’s due to a lack of deep sleep and REM sleep. They’re the last two sleep stages (out of four), and the ones crucial for keeping your body and brain functioning optimally. “Slowwave (stage 3) and REM sleep promote memory creation and solidify things we’ve picked up during the day and
And when you shortchange yourself on sleep long-term, you start to see full-body fallout. The reasons aren’t entirely clear, but “with chronic sleep deprivation, a lot of things will go wrong,” says Pradeep Bollu, M.D., a board-certified sleep specialist and a neurologist with the University of Missouri. Some animal studies have even shown that regularly being sleep-deprived can cause physical damage to the brain, injuring neurons

Skip the cocktail.
Take a bath.
Block all the light.
A few drinks may make you fall asleep more easily, but alcohol is metabolized quickly. When its effect wears off, your sleep will be more fragmented, which means you’ll have frequent, often unnoticeable wake-ups that can leave you feeling zonked in the morning.
Your body starts to wind down an hour or two before your bedtime, and research shows that to be the best time for a warm soak. Like aiming a hairdryer at the thermostat to kick-start the AC, a bath will trigger a cooling process that helps you drift off and get better sleep.
There’s some evidence that light can penetrate eyelids and interfere with melatonin production. Even illumination from streetlights, a clock, the cable box or under the door may have an effect, so it’s worth installing blackout curtains and slipping on an eye mask.

Pea The unsweetened versions of this new player on the nondairy field pack up to 8 g of protein from a nutrient-dense source and are made of real peas, water and often oils such as algal oil and sunflower oil and emulsifiers like guar and gellan gums. The use of plant oils adds polyunsaturated fatty acids, linked to immunity, heart health and cognition. LAB LOWDOWN: Since pea milk doesn’t contain nuts, lactose or soy, it’s a great choice for those with allergies or intolerances, and it has a comparable nutrient profile to soy. Don’t worry — despite the name, it’s not green, and it doesn’t taste like peas. It’s as creamy as soy with a slightly less nutty flavor.
Coconut
There’s a new batch of (creamy!) plant-based milks in town. if you’re not doing dairy for
whatever reason, there are loads of choices for your coffee and granola. Soy and almond milks, of course, have been around for hundreds of years and are mainstays at coffee bars and grocery stores. And as more of us are going plant-based, the $10 billiona-year business is projected to keep growing — great news for people who are vegan, lactose intolerant, trying to rely less on animal products or simply interested in tasting something new. But how do these alternative milks (which are generally made by soaking

the ingredients in water, then blending and straining for a milky consistency) stack up nutritionally compared with cow’s milk? It depends on which you pick, but generally speaking, if you stick to versions made without sugar, they’re usually lower in calories than even nonfat dairy milk. Keep an eye on protein (aim for at least 4 g per cup) and go for those that are fortified with vitamin A, calcium and vitamin D to ensure that you’re getting nutrients for strong bones, hormone regulation and general immune support. Vegan? Look for blends that have vitamin B12 and DHA/EPA omega-3s as well.
Oat Oat milk is lower in protein than cow’s milk or soy-based versions (about 1 g to 4 g per cup vs. 8 g). It also has slightly more calories than unsweetened almond milk. To benefit from oatmeal’s soluble fiber — beta-glucan, which some early research has linked to lower cholesterol — try making it at home. LAB LOWDOWN: We love the clean, slightly sweet flavor — it’s like the milk

Mooove Over!
Made from water and coconut cream (and sometimes coconut water), coconut milk is higher in fat and lower in carbohydrates than nut- or grain-based milks. Most of the calories in this creamy beverage come from saturated fat — just one cup has up to 4 g, which is 20% of your daily value. LAB LOWDOWN: The delicious, tropical flavor makes coconut a perfect choice for smoothies and desserts — just keep an eye on your saturated-fat intake for the rest of the day.

Seed You may not think of flax and hemp seeds as mouthwatering ingredients to sip in a glass alongside a chocolate chip cookie, but these surprisingly creamy milks are packed with nutrition. Take flax milk: The alpha-linolenic acid in flax helps support immunity and has been linked to reducing heart disease risk. Milk made from the trendy ingredient hemp (the ubiquitous CBD is often derived from hemp) packs omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids — essential nutrients for overall immunity and cognition —
plus about 3 g of protein, and it has just 60 calories per cup. LAB LOWDOWN: Flax milk tastes surprisingly similar to cow’s milk, in case you miss the dairy stuff. The somewhat bitter flavor of hemp milk, however, can be an acquired taste, especially if you’re used to the sweeter notes of other plant-based alternatives. — Jaclyn London, M.S., R.D., C.D.N.

Q
I’m in a salad rut — any delicious ideas?
answer: It’s so easy to default to the same old same old, but switching up the components is actually fun, says Jaclyn London, M.S., R.D. Her advice: Start with non-starchy veggies, but try a new leafy green (kale or mâche, for example); vegetables like cauliflower, Brussels sprouts and broccoli; and eggplant, mushrooms, peppers, tomatoes, cukes, celery, snap peas, artichokes, fennel and asparagus. Any or all of these will work as a base. Add two scoops of a starchy vegetable, whole grain or pulse: sweet potatoes, squash, quinoa, beans, lentils, chickpeas or edamame. For protein, salmon, tuna, sardines or shrimp packed in oil can sub for steak or chicken. Top it all off with a squeeze of fresh lemon juice for a pop of flavor without adding extra calories. GH Nutritionist Approved StarKist Selects E.V.O.O. Yellowfin Tuna contains omega-3 fatty acids and protein that will help keep you fuller longer and comes in a convenient pouch.
Q WHEN I’M STRESSED, I EAT GARBAGE! HELP!
answer: You can’t stress-eat junk that’s not there. Clear the pantry (or office snack stash) of candy and treats when you know you’re hitting a crazed period. Then stock up on no-effort crudités, air-popped popcorn and your favorite fruits. “I’ve never seen someone gain weight from simply eating too many pieces of whole fruit,” says Wendy Bazilian, Dr.P.H., R.D.N. If you tend to power through work and then ravenously reach for regret-it-later choices, try setting an alarm to remind yourself to take a break and eat something nutritious around 4 p.m. And to break the stress-eating cycle over the long term, take time to ID the triggers in your life and seek out healthy ways to address them. You know the drill: Find a yoga class or a YouTube video, open a meditation app or take a quick spin around the block when a big project goes haywire. And if you do dive into the candy dish, no biggie. Give yourself a break — it happens! Then get a good night’s sleep and start fresh tomorrow.

You know about almond milk, but there are also macadamia, walnut and others — practically every kind of nut is being soaked and blended into a milk these days, and each kind has its own benefits. Cashew milk contains zinc, copper and magnesium, which help support the immune system. Peanut milk is often more affordable and higher in protein than other dairy alternatives. Walnut milk is a top pick if you’re looking to boost your intake of plant-based omega-3s. LAB LOWDOWN: These taste strongly of the nuts they’re made from, a plus if you love the earthy, nutty flavor of cashews, walnuts, hazelnuts, macadamia nuts or peanuts. If not, a seed milk might be a better bet.

You may get a partial refund if you bought it in a store, but online companies often arrange to pick it up for a local charity and will give back 100% of your money. Just as with mattresses, when shopping for pillows, think about how you sleep. 2 Decide on fill.
3 Consider the care.
Next, think about what the pillow is filled with. Down is the fluffiest, but a down-andfeather combo will be firmer and less expensive. Down alternatives feel soft and, since they’re made with synthetic fill, are even more affordable. Memory foam is thicker and firmer. There are also hybrid ones that mix foam and fiberfill for the best of both.
While most styles are machine washable, some are dry-clean only, have frontloading machine restrictions or advise only spot-treating. Our experts recommend washing pillows two to four times a year to help them last longer. And the last thing you want is one that’s a hassle to keep clean. Check the care label before making a final decision.

CLASSIC FLANNEL Ideal for chilly nights, L.L.Bean’s brushed cotton set retains heat to help keep you warm. Choose from different plaid colors and with plus, tall and petite sizes. STYLE Lusomé’s cami-and-shorts combo doesn’t just look great; it also helps take the edge off night sweats, say GH testers. LAB results The winner of our recent Textiles Lab test, this luxe set was the best at managing moisture according to a specialized machine that uses synthetic sweat to analyze fabric. LUSOMÉ GINGER CAMI AND CARA SHORT, $64 EACH, LUSOME.COM
These Under Armour styles are a go-to for many GH staffers. We like that the athlete-inspired joggers and tops don’t scream “pajamas,” so you can wear them to walk the dog or run errands. LAB results The lightweight fabric is extra soft and held up to repeated washings in Lab tests. UNDER ARMOUR RECOVERY SLEEPWEAR, FROM $45 PER PIECE, UNDERARMOUR.COM

CLEAN YO U R BEDDING LIKE A PRO 98
G H MARCH 2020
Schedule laundry day once a week for your sheets and pillowcases to help them stay fresh. Our Cleaning Lab experts recommend using warm or hot water and tumbling dry on Low to reduce shrinkage, wrinkles and general wear and tear.
LIGHT-BLOCKING EYE MASK Can’t snooze without total darkness, or need a DO NOT DISTURB sign for a power nap? Block light with Bucky’s sleep mask. Its unique contoured design means you can even open your eyes while wearing it, something our testers absolutely loved. LAB results This mask was the top performer in our tests, excelling in both Lab and consumer evaluations. We found that it effectively blocked light, held up well to washing and was easy to put on and take off. BUCKY 40 BLINKS SLEEP MASK, $15, BUCKY.COM
2 Protect pillows. If your styles are machine washable (most down and fiberfill ones are), clean two at a time in an agitator-free machine to help maintain their shape. Do this every four to six months. We also recommend using a pillow protector to keep it clean and safe from wear.
3 Speed-dry fluffy items. Pillows and comforters with fill can often end up wet and clumpy after a cycle if they don’t tumble freely in the dryer. To help prevent this, toss in two or three dryer balls at the start and pause the drying cycle a few times to give your bedding a fluff.
up 4 Spruce your mattress. Every few months, vacuum the surface to remove dust. Zap odor by sprinkling on (and brushing in) baking soda. Wait about 15 minutes, then vacuum. Pass a handheld garment steamer over the surface to kill dust mites, then vacuum again.

There’s a moment at most kids’ birthday parties, just after “Happy Birthday” has been

Teach Your Kids to Wish Out Loud Why sharing your dreams with loved ones can help make them a reality by KR ISTIN A KUZM IČ
sung, when the birthday kid takes a big breath and gets ready to blow out the candles on his or her cake. “Make a wish!” the parents say. “But don’t tell anyone what it is. If you tell, it won’t come true!” I hate this moment. We’re supposed to have big dreams and wild ambitions — for family, career, success, recognition — yet we’re taught from birthday number one that saying what we want out loud is a bad idea. It’s a jinx. It’s embarrassing. No matter what your aspirations are, you’ll never reach them if you don’t try. But it’s hard to muster up the confidence to try without having your loved ones cheering you on, and they’re not even going to get the chance to support you if you never let them know what your dreams are. That’s why I do the birthday cake thing a little differently with my kids. At candle time, I scream, “Make a wish! Say it out loud! Yell it at the top of your lungs!” And then we all cheer for one another’s biggest dreams and do what we can to make sure they come true. My hope is to give my kids the confidence to dream out loud. I want to show them

Help keep the planet and your family healthy by making these simple switches to nontoxic, eco-friendly products and methods
THE SCOOP ON POOP Not only will leaving your dog’s business where he drops it annoy your neighbors, but it can also spread pathogens. Animal waste carries disease, and rain can wash it into the water supply, according to the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC). Never flush your cat’s waste down the toilet either. Cat feces can carry toxoplasmosis, a disease caused by parasites that live on it. Instead, toss both in your garbage — use biodegradable waste bags to reduce the environmental impact. Also, try a greener cat litter made of shredded paper, walnut shells or wood shavings instead of bentonite clay or silica.
CHEMICAL CHECK Some flea- and tick-control treatments contain ingredients that can make your family sick. An NRDC study shows that pesticide residue from certain OTC flea and tick collars, powders and sprays increases the risk of learning disabilities and cancer in humans. Instead, James Lok, Ph.D., a professor of parasitology at the University of Pennsylvania, recommends oral treatments containing lufenuron and nitenpyram, which inhibit the fleas’ life cycle without the same risk to humans. Use biodegradable grooming products too, to prevent detergents from washing into groundwater.
SUSTAINABLE “STUFF” Choosing pet toys made of recycled materials can help lessen the environmental load, even if your pup chews through them quickly. And when your puppy or kitten outgrows his or her gear or you no longer need gently used toys, unopened leftover food, beds or bowls, consider donating them. Animal shelters are in constant need of goods to help animals in their care. But call your local shelter or rescue organization before dropping stuff off. Some feed their pets a specific food or have particular requirements. — Lizz Schumer
