PODIUM Bolts from the Blue THERE’S nothing like the raw power of an electric shock, or haymaker from left field to get your instant attention and this month there’s a couple of instances I’d like to espouse and expose. The first is the late STOP PRESS news from Kiwi Shipping’s Steve Curle who advised the edict from US Customs that no cars can be exported from the state of New York due to internal political wrangling in the USA. When you dig down to the bottom of it, the root cause is President Trump’s hardline position on immigration and the states and cities which provide a sanctuary for illegal aliens. New York state is considered one of those sanctuaries and provides drivers licences for illegals, and the Federal government and the DMV New York have ceased communicating. Deliberate? That’s a good question, and there’s never smoke without fire, but you do the maths and join the dots. There are 13 more states right on New York’s tail, California, Nevada, Utah, Washington and more. So don’t for one minute think it’s going to end at New York’s borders, it could potentially threaten the export of American cars from America to any worldwide destination and that readers means New Zealand. We are not exempt and could quite easily wind up dead in the water, right on the tip of the tail wagged by a very big dog. Hey, the sky may not fall, but the forces at play here are much, much larger than anything we could ever hope to control. I’ll keep you posted on any updates and developments, but if I were you and I had a dream car in mind, I’d make it happen sooner rather than later. That brings me neatly to a very cool counter-attack strategy and structure designed and built to defend us from this kind of lightning bolt from the blue and that is an organisation here in NZ called SIVANZ. If ever there was a wake-up call to join, this is it because the mood swings of governments

often fly swat minority interest groups like us to oblivion. The answer is in our the high power of our collective numbers. I’ve joined SIVANZ, and you need to as well. Kiwis are renowned for their lackadaisical she’ll-be-right attitude, but the reality of that is head-in-the-sand, and I can hear the screams of indignity from here when at some point in the near future that lightning bolt from the blue hits our unprotected flank. Greg Stokes called for support in his letter, (Feb 2020) Andrew Ferrier Kerr from SIVANZ backed him up 100% (this issue), and now I’m punching the nail in harder. Make it happen men! The second bolt from the blue is one I’ve pondered writing about for quite some time, and the reason is because it is a very sensitive matter and I may go down in a screaming heap for writing this, but I write with no malice. The subject matter is the low volume vehicle certification system, and it’s here where paradoxical feelings arrive like bolts from the blue and smash me from elation to depression-like waves over a rock. Make no mistake and get this clear in your minds, I’m 100 per cent all for certification, and I think the system is just fantastic. The ability for any person to dream up and create a motor vehicle from scratch and to then have it checked and then registered for

legal road use is a precious privilege I am, and we all should be most grateful for. I wholeheartedly supported LVVTA certification for quite some time now ans on occasions have copped flak from hot rodders who disagree with my views. On reflection I’ll put the nitty gritty part 2 of this story on ice because as I write it’s not over and the dice are still rolling. It’s an excellent tale though so stay tuned. On a lighter and personal note, it was great to share the 30th Anniversary of Muscle Car Madness with so many of you and a very special treat to be there with our daughter Nadine and her new friend Bailey. They flew over from Sydney to partake in the Madness we’ve all come to love and enjoy from ringmaster Craig Stare before hopping the southern alps and taking a short break over Hokitika way. It was the first time we’ve met Bailey and it turns out he’s an alright guy and even a whizz with the camera and took some very creative shots, including this one of Nadine and I rekindling those precious father-daughter bonds while cruising towards Dansey’s Pass in Craig’s chopped deuce tudor. Unknown to us Bailey snapped it from the back seat. Impressive! PG

LETTERS Response to Greg Stokes LETTER R RE Get Interactive. Hi Paul, I read Greg Stokes’ letter Get Interactive in the February issue. He was advocating that hot rodders wake up, re-evaluate (where they are at in hot rodding) and get interactive. The ultimate goal is to keep supporting magazine publishers and hot rodding generally. He’s right about all of it. Support for magazine publishers, other SIV manufacturers and suppliers and event organisers is required if we want to keep reading about cars or purchasing those things that keep our cars on the road or being an event participant. If those suppliers don’t exist then we go back to the dark ages of hotrodding. I don’t want to have to make a widget for my car when I used to be able to buy one from the parts store down the road or have a car in the garage with no events to go to. Greg also makes a good point about magazine content. I can only imagine the difficulty in deciding what readers are looking for this month compared to last and what car or colour or wheel is the flavour right now. I don’t envy the publishers juggle to produce a great mag every month. I’m a regular magazine subscriber and a Mopar guy. I can tell you from experience that magazine content is really important for me. While the ‘32 and ’34 Fords are lovely cars, I’m tired of looking at them. That said, I know that they are popular, wellloved and tattooists are run off their feet as people line up for their ’32 and ’34 Ford best car ever tattoo. I have a significant number of magazines still in their sealed plastic wrappers. Am I getting the content that really excites me? Not often. But I continue to spend money on printed material in the knowledge that my donations to the publishing world is genuine support and is making a difference. I need them in my SIV world. But getting interactive and engaged isn’t just about magazine publishers. It’s about every aspect of hotrodding. I think the “get interactive”

message applies to a much wider world than magazines and other SIV businesses. This response is not promoting SIVANZ but it’s the message that we’ve been spreading for the last three years; get engaged with the world of SIVs and climate change discussions (read government discussion). Talk about it with friends and club mates or our collective silence and in-action will cripple us all. About now some readers eyes are rolling back into their heads. This suddenly got deep. This guy is going to ask me to do something; take action, get involved or something. OMG, how hard is this going to be. Relax. As Greg says in his letter, “I hope this gets people thinking. Get interactive.” That’s all you have to do. I will add that if you lift your eyes up slightly from your current day to day world of SIVs you will see further down the road. There’s a couple of bumps coming up. What are you going to do to negotiate those? Greg says the average hot rodder may have 15-20 summers left. Fifteen summers is out to 2035 and twenty summers is out to 2040……… The NZ government has set 2035 as a milestone year for climate change initiatives to deliver positive results. How many summers do you think SIV owners have left? Andrew Ferrier-Kerr

I joined the club must have about their third meeting, but dropped out in the mid eighties when lots of family stuff got in the way. The help I got from the club for my first three trips to the salt, particularly from Casey Hill was overwhelming almost, then to get two pages in the commemorative book, well word fail me. To have the Bonneville band a part of it was huge as well. My hat is off the the whole club for such a well oiled event. Gonna be a hard one to beat. Bill Ward.

HI PAUL, Enjoyed your editorial about the ‘Art of Design’, in our hot rod world of cars we term good design more simply as having good stance, having the right profile and proportions, a shape that is naturally easy on the eye. The two pictures below are virtually worlds apart in every way except for their pleasing symmetry. In the natural world good design for both strength and repeatable in shape follows the Fibonacci sequence found on everything from snow flakes to crop circles even the shapes of galaxies. Maybe this has hard wired us humans to good design. Chris Harris.

Death Wobble

Symmetry in Design

SHIT I’ve just read John Eva’s article (Toolbox Tales) concerning death wobble .This is a very tricky subject and there are a hundred different opinions from a hundred different people and most dont know what they are talking about .I have run into this issue myself in the last couple of years, but never in my first 45 years of hot rodding. If you want to open a can of worms do a series inviting people to make contributions as to their solutions to this problem. After all my research I think it is caused by scrub radius geometry being changed due to wheel change or brake conversions. By now most people should have realised that just because some big name American hot rod producer does something, that doesnt make it right. A case in point is the disc brake conversions onto early Ford spindles, either factory or aftermarket, they all seem to have the same dimensions. In order to not have to shorten the stub axle they supply a bearing spacer which causes the scrub radius to move outwards which caused the death wobble. Their solution to this is to fit a VW steering stabiliser which is just a shock absorber mounted horizontally. By the way VW Kombi unit is stronger than the car one. This doesnt fix the issue it just reduces or masks the effect . That’s my contribution to the debate. John Evas problem

Bridging the Gap In the South Island Greetings fellow rodders. Hope you all survived Xmas and New Year safely. I’ve just read the January 2020 issue and on page 10 the Bridging the Gap item in Just In Passing dept showing Ian Taylor’s Model A coupe and a stocker. I found a photo from my album taken at a Kiwi Goodguys Woodend Campout back in 2004 with a 1930 Ford Model A and Dave Stephens’ 1928 Ford Model A coupe. I’m looking forward to the upcoming feature of Road Hog. Someone had started building a similar version several years ago but I’m unsure if it ever got finished. ³ Bullitt THE original 1968 Ford Mustang from Steve McQueen’s 1968 movie ‘Bullitt’ is expected to break sales records and fetch 7 million when it goes to auction in Florida on January 10. The movie’s 11-minute car chase has been described as the best car chase in movie history. The camera mounts and custom exhaust are still on the car which was first advertised in a magazine advert after the movie for a measly $6000.

Competition A Classic American Muscle Car-1969 Chevrolet Camaro-Wins Top Spot

MIKE and Jim Ring of Ringbrothers out of Spring Green, WI, took the top prize in the sixth-annual SEMA Battle of the Builders® competition. For the second year in a row, a 1969 Chevrolet Camaro beat out nearly 300 entrants in the internationally recognised competition which has unfolded during the SEMA Show. The Top 4 finalists for 2019 came down to Jim and Mike Ring with their 1969 Chevrolet Camaro (Hot Rod), Randy Borcherding with a 1955 Chevrolet truck (Truck/ Off-Road), Louie Shefchik and his 1968 Iso Rivolta (Sport Compact), and Young Guns winner Brad Swaney with his 1971 Chevrolet C-10. Every builder brought their A-game this year and was recognised with trophies in their respective classes. ³ Snowtime WHILE we’re all enjoying the hot summer sun spare a thought for those in the USA where winter has bitten hard, even in California. Kiwi Shipping proprietor Steve Curle sent us this rare white Christmas pic from his digs in California and in case you wondered, that’s a ’40 Ford ragtop.


➤ Get Lucky at the Rev Up THE 1954 Ford Popular (pictured) will be auctioned off with NO reserve at 1 pm on Saturday 18th April at the Rev Up in Whangarei. It was last registered 1997 and currently has a 4-cylinder Ford Escort motor which may or may not be running in time for the auction. The promoters believe it currently has Vauxhall and Escort running gear and is an ideal Project car. The condition is As Is-Where Is and it can be viewed before the auction by arrangement. Paul Sumich donated this car from Harcourts Whangarei, and all proceeds go to Kind Hands Respite Care Cottage, which is the charity Rev Up is raising funds for this year. (www.kindhands.co.nz) The Rev Up is on the 18th of April in Whangarei town centre and runs from 9 am ‘til 2 pm. ³ Rat Trip IT seems that Martin Bennett’s Uncertain T wasn’t the only Kiwi hot rod attending SEMA in November. David & Suzanne Jeffries from Christchurch built a Rat Rod in seven months then shipped it to the USA and drove it just over 5500kms before featuring as part of the 40-car international build-off at SEMA. Out of 17 cars which entered the only seven made the long road trip from Lincoln, Nebraska to SEMA in Las Vegas, Nevada. At one point on the journey, the weather deteriorated to the point where there was ice inside the car. Overall it was a great achievement and an excellent trip.

³ Where it all began WE visited Jim Jake Jacobs after GNRS again this year. As always many great stories are told. This shot is proof of how the four bar suspension system first began. What you see here are the first ever Pre Pete & Jakes pair of bat wings which Jake designed for his famous ‘34 Ford coupe. The four bars themselves were made from Chevy Impala rear Panhard bars. As they say “the rest is history”. The design was refined, improved upon and Jakes fixtures are still in use today at Pete & Jakes which GMS Hot Rods are an authorised dealer for here in New Zealand.

³ Real and fake patina NO question about it Brizios are one of the busiest shops in the USA lately. Renowned for their world class show winning drivers, Brizios latest two projects are controversially cool. The ‘33 coupe is for Eric Clapton and has been masterfully painted to look like a barn find with a roof chop. The ‘35 coupe for Ross Myers is essentially a barn find with updated underpinnings. Both cars feature Kugel independent suspension and were a stand out at the Suede Palace at GNRS.

³ Mrs Magoo LLOYD Wilson has had a lot of ribbing through the years as despite completing 45 ‘turn-key’ rods (including three for himself) since starting Magoo’s Street Rods 23 years ago his ever patient wife Anne has been waiting 20 years for her own ’34 Tudor to be rebuilt and completed. Customer’s cars have taken priority but Magoo got the last laugh when the car was finally mobile again in time for Anne to enjoy her special Christmas present. ³ Better than the Best POSSIBLY the nicest 1969 SS396 L78 Chevelle in Daytona Yellow in existence has arrived in NZ via Chucks. It’s been treated to a complete frame off, nut and bolt, no expense spared restoration in 2016 for its American owner Jody Schmeisser. The car was debuted at the 2016 Muscle Car and Corvette National where it scored Gold Status of 995 p points out of a p possible 1000. Since then it has been stored in the owner’s climate-controlled collectors garage and only clocked up approximately two miles of drive time. The car has it’s original engine, and many NOS parts were collected for the restoration over a ten year period. It’s Kiwi owner is an avid reader of NZ Hot Rod magazine and plans to enjoy this pristine Chevelle as much as possible.

Well Rooted Roadster From Squeak Bell

I FIRST saw this car in 1967 as it drove into the monthly stock sale in Te Teko. My Dad and I were on our way to collect whey from the Edgecumbe Dairy Company and the sale yard was on our way. Dad was told the Roadster, which was being sold as a ‘sundry’ would come up after lunch, giving us plenty of time to be back to bid. Upon the return trip, I saw the Roadster being driven out of the sale yard; it turns out the ‘sundries’ had been moved forward.......dammit! I’d never forgotten the car and have known exactly where it was for the past 53 years. When Wellsy informed of me a recent death in the owner’s family and the start of a massive cleanup of the property, I decided it was time to pull finger. Time hadn’t been kind to the Roadster but what I found was just enough that I had to have the car that I had lusted after as an 11-yearold and at least relocate the remains. After much cutting, digging and thanks to Barry Gardner some nifty HIAB-ing it now awaits a re-planting in a place for all to ponder. Watch this space for the rest of the story.

OUR Gassing Up Part 1 last month sparked quite a bit of interest and feedback from readers so that got us thinking about the ones in the USA. It was there that automotive refuelling took on a life of it’s own and architects, designers and marketers all ascended to amazing heights to catch the eye of the passing motorist. Gas is gas right? Not when you’re up to your eyeballs in competition so creating a point-of-difference from all the rest became a must-do rather than be a plain-Jane also ran. The reason is the huge turnover created from selling gas, a man could get rich fairly swiftly if the consumers chose his gas station over the others. Here’s a selection of the weird, wacky and wonderful architecture and design which has permeated our car culture and resonated with us as hobbyists, collectors and admirers of gassing up USA-style.

HE was one of Hot Rodding’s true innovators, a man who didn’t follow trends and in many ways was the leader in most of them. He showed us that being different is the true essence of hot rodding. In the early years of the sport Jocko was involved with Harbour City Club along with Lenny Jones, Ken Hughes and Pete Dore (rip) and was the driver of the Hairy Kanary Altered which was a car which members of the club put together. Kerr’s Road, Wiri starter on the day was Pukekohe’s Ralph Wright who recently told me that Jocko showed up at the start line with no shoes on, so Ralph lent him his to make the ill-fated pass. Such was the casual nature of the early years and well cemented in the memories of many. In the early ‘80s Jocko bought B/C Equipment off Steve Oldale and renamed in Performance Equipment and Hi-Tec. His entrepreneurial spirit led to many more business ventures. Around the same time he joined Southside Streeters Hot Rod Club in East Auckland. Jocko and Maria soon fitted into the social side and attended as many events around the country

as work commitments would allow. There’s a long list of vehicles over the last 40 years, many of them featured in this very magazine. These include ‘32s, ‘34s, Bonus and F100 pickups his ‘48 Chev pickup, Camaro, GT40 and his twin turboed Lexus powered F100 which is a piece of art on wheels. He had a passion for creating works of art that were not only functional but pleasing to the eye as well. As a non-conformist he certainly pushed the boundaries of design and I know influenced many younger builders along the way with “It’s ok to be different point of view” The last couple of projects he was

involved with are again testimony to his visionary ideas and his ability to turn them into reality. These being Patrick Lees’ heavily modified ‘50s Nash and Keith Hunter’s ‘34 Ford Coupe both of which are packed full of his quirky brackets and innovative design.

What can we say: Fisherman, gold miner, businessman, engineer, mechanic, artisan with an entrepreneurial spirit, male review artist, social entity, part time (or full time) comedian and lastly a self-appointed master chef. He was just a good bugger and will be sadly missed by us all. RIP Jocko. From his Southside mates.

He liked to include the owners in the builds and a lot of this work was accomplished with their help, all be it under his watchful eye!! Jocko was held in high regard by his club and as a measure of this many of the members stepped up to help after his tragic accident. This was also evident at the funeral service as the coffin passed through a Southside Streeters guard of honour before being placed on his F100. He was well respected within the hot rod industry and his long-term association with both LVVTA and the TAC. The latter being acknowledged with him featuring on the Honours wall. Apart from his many hot rodding exploits he held extremely

Naki-Licious RIG 66 All American Car Day New Plymouth

NOW into its 31st year and growing each year, saw this year’s event held on Sunday 26th January attracting record numbers with over 140 entrants. The Scenic City Rod & Custom Club’s annual RIG 66 All American Car Day continues to bring out the best local and several out of town American cars for the one day display held at the TSB Stadium and New Plymouth Racecourse car parks. Entry proceeds go to a worthwhile local charity, and this year The Men’s Shed will benefit. While it is called the Men’s Shed, it’s not strictly a female-free zone; it’s a place where blokes can hang out and make stuff, potter on projects or just enjoy each other’s company. A nice touch this year was a couple of the local Scenic City female club members dressed up in Rockabilly clothing and with buckets in hand collected from the public a gold coin donation. Back to the cars on display: A theme came thru this year with a strong showing of some of the nicest ‘60s and ‘70s cars to come out of the States. This reflected in the public’s vote for the Top Five in the NZHRA Zone 5 region. Last year saw four of the Top Five being Pre 49, this year not one made it into the top five. The oldest was a 1951 Chevrolet pickup and youngest a 1979 Chevrolet Custom pickup. A trend may be from New Plymouth being the home of Americana for many years now. This is no reflection on any hot rods on display as many of them have been award winners at previous events and rod runs in New Zealand. While temperatures hit a scorching 24 degrees during the

peak of the afternoon, on hand were local vendors with mobile trailer units who were kept busy serving up coffee, cold drinks, healthy food and of course even on a hot day, hot chips with tomato sauce. Also, some ‘60s and ‘70s clothing could be purchased from a couple of vendors too. Each club member must bring along a food item to donate into the wheelbarrow raffle and this year’s winner was Golly Adams. Golly was displaying his recent import 1934, Ford Tudor, for the first time at this NZHRA Zone 5 event and the fun he gets out of that and consuming his raffle goodies could be interesting - the majority of product in the wheelbarrow consisted of Watties canned Baked Beans, Spaghetti along with chocolate biscuits, canned Chilli beans and a favourite, Weetbix. Local icon and former radio announcer Roger Tonkin himself a great supporter of old cars was the MC for the prizegiving and as always did a great job during the day with bits of information on nearly every American car on display. Special mention to all the volunteers and Scenic City members whose help and support makes this event possible and it runs as in the past 30 years like a sidevalve V8

150 CARS entered over 11 classes giving a full field for an exciting race program with high expectations for the big crowd. At the top of the racing tree seven cars entered in Top Alcohol with quick time in qualifying going to Anthony Marsh with a 5.513 pass. After taking a win in Round 1 of eliminations he was in the trailer with a fuel leak on the line which prevented him going on. It was left up to Chris Johnston to wade through the field and he emerged the victor with a 9.687 single pass. The pressure was on because five of the seven Top Alcohol entries broke or couldn’t run during the day’s racing. Runnerup Dwane Garrett ran a PB of 5.973. In Top Doorslammer Mark Bardsley ran the fastest time of the day at 6.520 but the final round was between Gavin Green and Jeff Dobson with Green taking the win. Overall Meremere track were delighted with the entries and crowds and with the fast and furious racing making for a very successful Round 4 of the (IHRA/NZDRA)National Series.

Black Swamp Run January 4th 2020

GOOD weather met 172 cars who rocked up to one on NZ’s quintessential and scenic oneday runs on the hot rod event calendar. The action kicked off at the Mangawhai Domain on Saturday at 9am with registration followed by a Show ‘n Shine display for the locals ‘til 11am with entry via a gold coin donation. At 11 am the cars departed on their rod run which took them through Mangawhai, picturesque Lang’s Beach, the iconic Waipu Cove on through open rolling roads with views of Kiwi country and coast heading to quaint Waipu township. There the cars did a left-left loop and returned back the way they came. Many residents and towns’ people brought out their deck chairs and enjoyed the double spectacle. On return to Mangawhai the entourage visited Phil Lathrop’s olive grove farm where they enjoyed hot food, picnics, socialising and swimming all to sounds of the Slip-Jack Rockabillys. Spot prizes were awarded and it was just on dark when the last car departed. If you’re up for some fun on a one-day run come to the Black Swamp run when it runs on Sunday Jan 3rd 2021.

ADRIAN’S got a definite penchant for Chevrolet’s curvaceous Aero sedans because this is his second version. The first was a ‘42 which was also a stunner and featured on these pages back in April 1997. Since then Adrian has built several more cars, and over time his tastes have changed and matured like a fine wine, so it’s natural and expected that this car has a myriad of way-cool features, all designed and crafted to make it a multi-dimensional winner: It not only looks good but drives superbly too. Down to the nitty-gritty: This time Adrian opted for the later 1948 Chev Fleetline Aero 2 door Sedan which he purchased from Brenda Herubin out of Lino Lakes which is just outside St Paul, Minnesota. It was her father Chester Herubin’s car, and he’d brought it in about 1974 and had rebuilt it with a 235ci blue flame six harvested from a 1962 Chev. That motor was backed by a stock 3-speed manual gearbox and a

high-speed diff. It also featured a split manifold with twin Porter mufflers, lowering blocks, tinted windows, a brown Naugahyde interior and a set of Remington whitewall tyres with ‘54 Chev hubcaps. Chester repainted the car two-tone, dark silver on the

top half and blue on the bottom. Chester and his wife were heavily involved in the car seen in Minnesota and were early members of the Minnesota Street Rod Association. The Aero saw many fun miles travelling all over the Mid West and was a regular


entrant at MSRA’s Back To The ‘50s run which is held in St Paul every year. It also went to the Canadian Street Rod Nats which were held in Regina, Saskatchewan. Chester passed away in about 1990, so the Chev had been parked up in the shed for about 22 years before Adrian bought it and how that happened is an interesting story.

Adrian was talking to good friend and hot rodder Bill Casey from St Paul while here on one of his many trips to New Zealand, and he was telling Adrian about an old friend of his Chester Herubin who had passed away some years ago. Chester had a shed full of old

Chev parts, and he also had an Aero Sedan, but Bill didn’t know if it was still there in the shed so on his return home he made a call to Brenda and was told the car was still there and it could be for sale. Emails were exchanged over a period along with photos which ended with Adrian buying the vehicle. In 2013 it was trucked to LA and then shipped to Christchurch through CFL Line. Once the car was in Adrian’s workshop, he refurbished the brakes, fitted a new exhaust plus tidied up some wiring and next thing it was on the road. down to the bare chassis and was fitted with new K-members and Jaguar XJ6 front and rear suspension plus a Hydro boost brake system. A rebuilt Chevrolet 305ci smallblock fed by a tried and true Rochester Q-Jet carb with sparks by Delco Remy HEI and spent gasses exit via a set of GM rams-horn exhaust manifolds. The combo is backed by a 700R4 trans for great mileage on those long-distance road trips Adrian is renowned for. The wheels are 15x7 chrome artilleries fitted with stock hubcaps and shod with whitewall tyres,

When it came to the body, it was stripped back to bare metal and needed very little work to ready it for paint. The colours chosen are factory 1942 Aero sedan two-tone colours, being Fortress Grey and Torpedo Grey. The gorgeous dash and interior window frames were re-woodgrained by Tich Finlay. The stunning interior is a complete kit purchased from La Barron Bonney in the States, and Adrian had Ian Ingham fit it to the car. The car has had a lot of Dynamat right throughout the interior of the bodyshell to ensure a smooth, quiet ride. A Vintage Air A/C unit was fitted to complete the ultimate driver comfort package. All rubbers and repo parts were brought from Chev of the ‘40s. This is the fourth ‘40s Chevy Adrian has built over the last 30 years or so.and he’s used them for most parts needed. Son Jonathan completely rewired the Aero, and one of the cool features is the original 3-speed column shift now operates the 700R4 auto.

The accessories for these 40s Chev are hard to find and can be very expensive to buy, but Adrian scoured swap meets in the States while others were purchased from good old eBay. The result is the car is well appointed with many factory accessories: the Banjo steering wheel , front grille guard , rear trunk guard, repro Fulton sun visor, side window sunshades, cats eye cigar lighter, clock, twin spots fog lights and a 6-foot radio aerial. When the Hydro Boost System was fitted, information on how to plumb it up was found on the internet then

when the car was up and running, it was not working right, so a call was made to Phill Game at PG Hydraulics. Phil had the correct advice so some changes were made and it now works perfectly. Adrian says, “It just goes to show you that not all information on the net is true and correct.” Back in 2014 Adrian and Chris made a road trip through the States and stayed with Bill Casey while taking in the Back to the ‘50s run in St Paul. It was on that trip they were able to meet up with Brenda Herrubin and her mum

which was really good as they had only communicated by email up until then. The Aero has been built in the home workshop, and the bulk of the work has been done by Adrian and Jonathan and good friend Graeme Wood. The rebuild has taken about three years but is now on the road. During the build it sat for about 18 months of that time through lack of interest but now it is up and running new enthusiasm has arrived and now the Aero sedan’s journey takes on a new dimension as it starts clocking up those comfy and fun-filled miles in high style.

THE day was held up when just before lunch, Wellington’s Brendon Webber suffered a nasty crash in his 9-second ‘37 Chevy coupe after making a sharp left turn into the wall just past the finish line and destroying the racecar. Brendon was taken to hospital with a foot injury, and was under observation. Dad Phil Webber thinks engine oil may have blown onto the rear tyres, causing the car to roll three times. After a huge effort by volunteers to clean up the carnage, it was decided to shorten the 1/4-mile to 1/8-mile, and racing got under way two hours later. As if to catch up with lost downtime, the action was non-stop, and still counted in the National Points series. The meet was sponsored by Total Oil. Lee Sherwin won Super Sedan class in the exAlan Lim Ford Escort, with a 6.034@ 114.80 over Wayne Fowler’s 6.031 with an identical 114.80 mph. It may have helped Lee that Wayne red lit, but it was a great 63rd birthday present for Lee’s Dad, Plank Sherwin.

Alan Smith from Otaki runs 350 in ‘67 Holden in Super Street. Has run a 10.7 in the quarter, but didn’t place on this day’s I/8th strip.

THIS trend-setting 1957 Chevrolet 3100 pickup has an appeal which is hard to put your finger on. As freelance photographers we often stop and take a shot or maybe two of a hot rod, then walk on looking for the next one, but this pickup has caught the eye of two of our photogs and were so taken with it that they both snapped half a dozen shots. The unique part of the story is both photographers were at different events and were a year apart. Such is the pull of the snow white paint and contrasting bright red engine accents and interior. Owner George Sepulveda commissioned Premier Street Rods from Lake Havasu, AZ to build the pickup. It rides on a TCI chassis riding on Budnik G-Series Spyder wheels. 20”x9” front and 22”x11” on the rear. Under the hood is a 427ci LS3 smallblock backed by a T56 Tremec 6-sppe manual trans. That amazing paint is House of Kolors Snow White Pearl/Blue/Blood Red. The stunning interior is by Ron Mangus Hot Rod Interiors. Did you notice the total absence of wiring, brakes and fuel lines under the hood. That is what we call a super-sano engine bay.

Customs blocks export of all vehicles with a NY title nationwide EFFECTIVE today Friday, February 7th 2020 the US Customs and Border Protection agency is unable to connect to the NY State DMV to clear NY titled tled vehicles for export. export The reason is political and is tied to the inability inabil inab of the DMV (NY State) and US Customs office (Federal Government) to share information between the two systems. The NY State is trying to protect the identity of illegal immigrants with NY State driver licenses and no longer shares access to its database with any Federal agencies. We (Kiwi Shipping) are very disappointed by such damaging decision and are still evaluating the impact. This will impact vehicles leaving all ports, not just Port of NY/NJ. We strongly advise clients to not purchase any NY titled vehicles until this situation is resolved. So far we know there will be $1000s of fees/fines from the ocean carriers and trucking companies for each container delivered to the Port with NY titled vehicles. Those containers will need to be returned back to our warehouses and unloaded. At this point we have two options to help mitigate this problem: 1. We can help owners with NY titled vehicles, older than 25 years, to be re-titled in another state through a legal process. Our current estimate for this process is 5 business days at which point we will be able to submit the new title to US Customs and export your vehicle from the same port as originally planned. There is a significant cost to this process and we estimate our expenses at $1000/vehicle. Unfortunately this option doesn’t apply to vehicles manufactured after 1/1/1995 or salvage vehicles. 2. There is an option to re-title vehicles manufactured after 1/1/1995 ransporting but the process is more complicated and involvess tra your car across the entire US. I FIRST spotted this car when turning from the Swanson Railway Station Cafe. While waiting for a gap in the traffic, I spotted a bright green mid-30s coupe coming towards me, and as it came closer, I deduced from its attractive roofline and silhouette that it was a ‘33 or ‘34 Ford 3-window coupe. But hang on a minute, that’s not a Ford grille as my mind raced for another solution. Zoom, it shot past me and still I couldn’t get a positive on it being a Ford, yet it certainly looked like one. Fortuitously there was a gap behind the coupe, so I turned and followed it home to the outer lifestyle blocks of the northwest of Waitakere, a few miles beyond Swanson and out into the country. I followed the coupe up the drive, and straight away, the owner came over, and I forthrightly introduced myself and explained my stalking/following behaviour. Once his concern that a stranger had tailed him home were allayed, we got chatting, and it turned out Mike was the owner and was returning home from final registration following certification. A maiden voyage, so to speak. As the conversation progressed, it unfolded that this car is a super-rare 1934 Huppmobile Model W coupe and one of just a handful in the world and certainly the only one here in NZ. Huppmobile production began in 1909 and ceased in 1939. The car is based on the Murraybuilt Ford three-window coupe. Murray Body Co built and supplied bodies to Ford and other manufacturers.

The Huppmobile Series 417-W version body rides on a 117” wheelbase (vs Ford’s 112”) and features Hupmobilespecific design tweaks to differentiate it from its Ford counterpart. At the top of the list is that gorgeous grille and second is the 3-window doors have no metal frame tops, so a ’34

Ford cabriolet-style window with a chrome top edge was used. It rolls up and lands on the upper, inner door opening. The stock motor was a 224ci inline-six backed by a three-speed manual transmission, and equipment includes suicide doors, a rumble seat, a heater, and a covered spare tire.

This right-hand-drive original may have been a special one-off order, but that’s mere conjecture. What history Mike does know is the coupe was owned by a guy in Titirangi, Auckland and then was sold to a new owner based in Maungaturoto, north of Auckland. Upon delivery, it

was parked on the side of the road and sadly hit/sideswiped by passing car. Almost a total loss it was put up for sale on Trade Me, and that’s where Mike spotted it. It was too badly damaged to be restored so a hot rod it was to be. Modifications all point to achieving the best driveability and road-handling package. A Jaguar XJS was a donor for both the front and rear ends while a TPI injected 350ci smallblock and TH400 provide smooth and reliable power. Driver comfort is assured from the Jaguar power rack and pinion while a comfy interior using the stock bench seat completes the package. Mike has a few vintage cars, a ‘33 Ford pickup and now an early NZ racer, so he’s got wide and varied tastes but his Huppmobile hot rod certainly takes the cake for an eye-catching well mannered hot rod which cuts a striking and rare pose. It’s brilliant!
